Insectivorous bats play a crucial role in agroecosystems by providing invaluable pest control services. With the escalating impacts of climate change, a comprehensive understanding of the environmental factors influencing bat activity becomes imperative for their conservation in agricultural landscapes. This study investigates the influence of weather conditions, specifically air temperature and relative humidity, on the timing activity and the relative abundance of five insectivorous bat species in central Chile. Data from automatic bat detectors and climatological stations are utilized for analysis. Our results unveil species-specific behaviors, with Tadarida brasiliensis exhibiting early emergence and extended activity periods compared to other bat species. Histiotus montanus and Lasiurus villosissimus display delayed onsets on more humid evenings, whereas Lasiurus varius and T. brasiliensis initiate activity earlier on colder nights compared to warmer ones. Relative humidity emerges as a key factor influencing relative abundance for all species, with more minutes with bat passes detected on drier nights. These findings suggest that global warming may influence observed bat behaviors, potentially altering foraging patterns and activity levels of these bat species. Moreover, as climate change continues, understanding the long-term impact on bat populations and their adaptive strategies is crucial for effective conservation measures. Further studies exploring these dynamics can provide valuable insights for shaping conservation efforts in the face of evolving environmental challenges.

Forestry plantations of Pinus radiata, managed through clearcutting method, would offer resistance to the movement of native fauna among remnants of native forest. In this study, we evaluate the possibilities of establishing connectivity corridors for native fauna in a forest landscape dominated by P. radiata, focusing on seven species with some level of specialisation in the use of different land covers and that exhibit different movement strategies. We sampled presences and abundances using several types of sampling to determine the abundance and crossing edge probabilities for the ground-dwelling beetle Ceroglossus chilensis; the mesocarnivores Conepatus chinga, Lycalopex culpaeus and Leopardus guigna; the terrestrial frogs Eupsophus septentrionalis and Pleuroderma thaul, and the understory bird Pteroptochos castaneus. We use species distribution modelling and circuit theory to calculate connectivity for each species. Finally, a spatial priorization approach was applied to obtain two scenarios of least-cost corridors. The results show that species with more specific requirements such as L. guigna, P. castaneus, P. thaul and E. septentrionalis, are unlikely to move through clear cuttings and young plantations, but their movement is possible through adult pine plantations with understory. For species that are habitat generalists such as C. chinga and L. culpaeus plantations were suitable for movement. The management of forest plantations should use multi-taxa assessments in the design of biological corridors that allow the connection of forest fragments.

In agro-ecosystems, habitat loss and fragmentation may alter the assemblage of aphidophagous insects, such as foliar-foraging (coccinellids) and ground-foraging predators (carabids), potentially affecting intraguild interactions. We evaluated how habitat loss (0, 55 and 84%), fragmentation (1, 4 and 16 fragments) and their combination affected the abundance and species richness of coccinellids and carabids, and aphid abundance, both in the short-term (summer: December to February) and over a longer time span (autumn: March to May), when different demographic mechanisms may participate. We created four types of 30 × 30 m patches (landscapes) in which alfalfa was grown: Control (1F - 0%, 30 × 30 m patch of alfalfa with no fragmentation or habitat loss), 4F - 55% (4 alfalfa fragments, with 55% total habitat loss), 4F - 84% (4 alfalfa fragments, with 84% total habitat loss), and 16F - 84% (16 alfalfa fragments, with 84% total habitat loss). Each landscape type was replicated five times. Insects were sampled by sweep-netting and pitfall traps, from December (summer) to May (autumn). Total abundance and species richness of carabids, in the short-term, was highest in the 16F - 84% landscapes. Total abundance of adult coccinellids was similar among landscapes, but at the species level Hyperaspis sphaeridioides, in the short-term, and Adalia bipunctata, in the long-term, had their highest densities in fragments within landscapes with high habitat loss (84%), independently of habitat fragmentation. Species richness in the long-term was higher in the landscapes with 84% habitat loss. Among aphids, in the long term Aphis craccivora was less abundant in landscapes with high habitat loss and fragmentation (16-84%), while Therioaphis trifolii showed the opposite trend. These results suggest that habitat loss and fragmentation may increase the density and diversity of aphidophagous insects, while their effects on aphids are more variable.

Habitat fragmentation may affect the dispersal behaviour of individuals across the landscape. If there is a high boundary contrast between the remaining fragments and the matrix, individuals should tend to stay inside the fragments, but the configuration of the landscape, i.e. the level of fragmentation and isolation distance between fragments, may modulate this. To test these ideas, we made several mark-recapture experiments with the ladybird Eriopis connexa (Germ.) in manipulated alfalfa model landscapes (30 × 30 m). Specifically we evaluated (i) ladybird movement and permanence in alfalfa and bare ground areas, (ii) how they move across fragment/matrix boundaries, (iii) how their movement between fragments within a landscape is affected by fragmentation level and isolation distance, and (iv) how their permanence in the landscape is affected by fragmentation level and isolation distance. The fragmented alfalfa landscapes had a constant level of habitat loss (84%), but varied in the level of habitat fragmentation (4 or 16 fragments), and isolation distance between fragments (2 or 6 m). We also sampled aphid abundance in the different landscapes through time. We found that ladybirds stay longer and displace less in alfalfa than on bare ground, and that they move less from the alfalfa fragments to the neighbouring bare ground matrix than vice versa. At the landscape level, ladybirds had a higher inter-fragment movement when fragments were closer, they tended to remain in less fragmented landscapes, regardless of their isolation distance. Aphid abundance increased in time, but it was similar in all landscapes. Ladybird movement within fragments, in the matrix and in the boundary between both habitats explains why ladybirds concentrate within alfalfa fragments. However, their dispersal movements at the landscape level do not reflect the higher abundance sometimes found for several species of ladybirds in more fragmented landscapes. At this larger scale, other mechanisms may have a stronger influence in determining the abundance of ladybirds.

Habitat loss and fragmentation are considered as the main causes of biodiversity depression. Habitat loss implies a reduction of suitable habitat for organisms, and habitat fragmentation is a change in the spatial configuration of the landscape, with the remaining fragments resulting more or less isolated. Recent theory indicates that the effects of habitat loss are more important than those of habitat fragmentation, however there are few experimental studies evaluating both processes separately. To test the effects of habitat fragmentation per se on the abundance, species richness and diversity of epigeal coleopterans, 15 (30 x 30 m) alfalfa micro-landscapes, distributed in three blocks, were created. On twelve of them, 84 % of the habitat was removed, leaving in each landscape four or 16 fragments separated by 2 or 6 m of bare ground. From December 2002 to April 2003, before and after fragmentation, coleopterans were sampled using pitfall traps. In total, 8,074 coleopterans of 75 species belonging to 16 families were captured. Neither habitat fragmentation nor habitat loss affected the total abundance of coleopterans, with the exception of Anthicidae that was more abundant in the micro-landscapes composed by four fragments separated for 2 m. This family was also more abundant in the matrix of fragmented micro-landscapes, while most other beetle families were more abundant in the fragments, significantly Carabidae and Lathridiidae. Species richness (per trap and per landscape) was higher in micro-landscapes with 16 fragments separated by 6 m. Contrary to what is described frequently in the literature, habitat fragmentation did not negatively affect the abundance or the species richness of epigeal coleopterans. Rather, smaller and more isolated alfalfa fragments seem to provide habitat to support greater biodiversity. These results agree with more recent findings where habitat fragmentation per se seems not to have deleterious effects on the fauna, instead, it could favor the biota, at least at short time scalesLa pérdida y fragmentación del hábitat han sido consideradas como las principales causas de la disminución de biodiversidad. Trabajos teóricos recientes indican que los efectos de la pérdida de hábitat son más importantes que los de la fragmentación, sin embargo existen pocos estudios experimentales que evalúen por separado ambos procesos. Para estudiar los efectos de la fragmentación per se sobre la abundancia y riqueza de especies de coleópteros epigeos, se crearon 15 micro-paisajes de alfalfa de 30 x 30 m distribuidos en tres bloques. Doce de ellos se fragmentaron removiendo el 84 % del hábitat, dejando cuatro ó 16 fragmentos separados por 2 ó 6 m. Entre diciembre del 2002 y abril del 2003, antes y después de la fragmentación, se muestrearon los coleópteros mediante trampas Barber. Se capturó un total de 8.074 coleópteros de 75 especies pertenecientes a 16 familias. El tipo de paisaje no afectó la abundancia de coleópteros, sólo Anthicidae fue más abundante en los paisajes de 4 fragmentos separados por 2 m y fue más abundante en la matriz. El resto de de las familias fue más abundante en los fragmentos, significativamente Carabidae y Lathridiidae. La riqueza de especies por trampa y por paisaje fue mayor en los paisajes con 16 fragmentos separados por 6 m, concentrándose en los fragmentos. Contrario a lo descrito en la mayor parte de la literatura, la fragmentación no afectó negativamente la abundancia y riqueza de especies de coleópteros epigeos asociados a alfalfa. Más bien, fragmentos de alfalfa más pequeños y aislados ofrecieron un refugio de hábitat para la biodiversidad de coleópteros epigeos. Estos resultados concuerdan con los postulados más recientes que indican que la fragmentación per se puede no tener efectos sobre la biota, o incluso puede favorecerla, al menos en el corto plazo

Habitat fragmentation may result in changes in species number and population abundance among habitats that differ in area, structure, or edge characteristics. These changes, in turn, may result in alterations in ecosystem process such as decomposition of organic matter. Through an experimental approach, we compared the beetles assemblages associated with dung and decomposition of cow feces in a continuous portion of Maulino forest, forest fragments and in pine plantations that surround this forest and forest remnants. Abundance and richness of dung-associated beetles were lower in forest fragments compared to the continuous forest and pine plantations. However, dung decomposition was similar in these three habitats. Beetle abundance, species richness and decomposition did not vary along edges of forest fragments and pine plantations, but beetle abundance and decomposition rate varied on the border compared to the interior of the continuous forest. Thus, although beetle assemblage changes across the fragmented landscape, these variations in species richness and abundance did not translate into alterations of an ecosystem process such as dung-decomposition, as occurs in tropical forests. The beetle assemblage at pine plantations comprises only native species and dung decomposition was similar in both fragments and continuous forest. Therefore, pine plantations maintain at least partially the structural and functional biodiversity of the native fauna, connecting the native remnants throughout the landscape, a crucial factor in biodiversity conservationLa fragmentación del hábitat puede cambiar el número de especies y la abundancia poblacional entre hábitats que difieren en área, estructura o en las características del borde. We asked if the structural heterogeneity of a laboratory arena differentially affected the abandonment of the plot, residence time, locomotory rate, pause duration and turning rate of adult Eriopis connexa and Hippodamia variegata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). We simulated an increase in heterogeneity by distributing vertically-oriented toothpicks in a circular arena: one control (without toothpicks), one uniform plot (toothpicks every 1 cm) and one random plot (randomly distributed toothpicks). No food was provided inside the arena. Coccinellids were released individually in the centre of each plot and their movement was videotaped. Fewer H. variegata adults left the plots as these become more heterogeneous. E. connexa did not discriminate between plots in their residence time, but H. variegata remained longer in the uniform and longest in the random plots. H. variegata only stayed longer than E. connexa in the random plots. This resulted because adults of H. variegata were stationary for longer periods, moved more slowly and less linearly and explored a higher number of toothpicks than adults of E. connexa in more heterogeneous environments. Thus, the physical structure of the environment differentially affects the movement patterns of insects. Eriopis connexa seems to be less sensitive to structural heterogeneity than H. variegata.

Evidence is advanced suggesting that Phyllocaulis gayi, a large slug in the temperate forests of Chile, might be a significant but overlooked granivore. In a short-term experiment, up to 18% of seeds are preyed upon by P. gayi. En el bosque maulino, la herbivoría sobre Aristotelia chilensis (maqui) es negativamente afectada por la fragmentación del bosque, siendo mayor en el bosque continuo que en los fragmentos, particularmente a inicios de la temporada de crecimiento. Este fenómeno puede deberse a cambios en la dinámica de las poblaciones de defoliadores, esencialmente insectos. En este trabajo se evaluó la abundancia, riqueza de especies y composición de insectos defoliadores de actividad nocturna presentes en A. chilensis en un bosque continuo (600 ha) y en ocho fragmentos remanentes (0,4-20 ha). Los muéstreos se realizaron mensualmente, entre agosto de 2005 y febrero de 2006, en 32 ejemplares adultos de A. chilensis en el bosque continuo y en 32 ejemplares en los fragmentos. Los insectos fueron muestreados durante las cinco primeras horas de la noche. Se recolectaron 890 insectos defoliadores, pertenecientes a 17 familias y 77 especies pertenecientes a los órdenes Coleóptera, Orthoptera y Lepidoptera, siendo todas nativas. La abundancia total no varió según el habitat. Sin embargo, la fragmentación incrementó o disminuyó la abundancia de algunas especies. La riqueza de especies por árbol tampoco fue afectada por la fragmentación del bosque, aunque el número total de especies fue considerablemente mayor en los fragmentos que en el bosque continuo. La similitud de especies fue mayor dentro del bosque continuo que entre el bosque continuo y los fragmentos o que entre los fragmentos. A principios de la temporada de crecimiento de A. chilensis (septiembre), la abundancia de Sericoides obesa fue significativamente mayor en el bosque continuo que en los fragmentos. Al avanzar en la temporada, Sericoides viridis se hizo más abundante en los fragmentos. Por el tamaño y la voracidad de los insectos del género Sericoides ellos serían los principales responsables de los patrones de defoliación de A. chilensis en el bosque maulino.At the Maulino forest, herbivory upon Aristotelia chilensis (maqui) is negatively affected by forest fragmentation, being higher in the continuous forest than in the small remnant fragments, particularly at the beginning of the growing season (spring). This phenomenon may be attributable to changes in the population dynamics of herbivores, mostly insects. In this work, the effect of the Maulino forest fragmentation on the abundance, species richness and composition of nocturnal defoliating insects associated with A. chilensis was evaluated. The insects associated with A. chilensis were sampled monthly, between August 2005 and February 2006, in 32 trees located in a continuous forest (600 ha) and in 32 trees located in eight forest fragments (0.4-20 ha). Insect sampling was carried out during the first five night hours. 890 folivorous insects from 17 families and 77 species of Coleóptera, Orthoptera and Lepidoptera were collected. All species were native. The total abundance did not vary with habitat fragmentation. Nevertheless, some species increased their abundance with fragmentation, while others were depressed. The species richness of folivorous insects per tree did not vary with forest fragmentation, though the total number of species was considerably higher in the forest fragments. The species similarity was higher within the continuous forest than between the continuous forest and fragments or among fragments. At the beginning of the season (September), the abundance of Sericoides obesa was significantly higher in the continuous forest than in the forest fragments. Later in the season, Sericoides viridis became more abundant in the forest fragments. Because of the body size and the voracity of Sericoides sp., these insects seem to be responsible of the herbivory patterns of A. chilensis at the Maulino forest.

Inferences about introduction histories of invasive species remain challenging because of the stochastic demographic processes involved. Approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) can help to overcome these problems, but such method requires a prior understanding of population structure over the study area, necessitating the use of alternative methods and an intense sampling design. In this study, we made inferences about the worldwide invasion history of the ladybird Harmonia axyridis by various population genetics statistical methods, using a large set of sampling sites distributed over most of the species' native and invaded areas. We evaluated the complementarity of the statistical methods and the consequences of using different sets of site samples for ABC inferences. We found that the H. axyridis invasion has involved two bridgehead invasive populations in North America, which have served as the source populations for at least six independent introductions into other continents. We also identified several situations of genetic admixture between differentiated sources. Our results highlight the importance of coupling ABC methods with more traditional statistical approaches. We found that the choice of site samples could affect the conclusions of ABC analyses comparing possible scenarios. Approaches involving independent ABC analyses on several sample sets constitute a sensible solution, complementary to standard quality controls based on the analysis of pseudo-observed data sets, to minimize erroneous conclusions. This study provides biologists without expertise in this area with detailed methodological and conceptual guidelines for making inferences about invasion routes when dealing with a large number of sampling sites and complex population genetic structures., (© 2014 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

We conducted an experimental landscape study to test the hypotheses that: (1) habitat removal results in short-term increases in population density in the remaining habitat patches (the crowding effect); (2) following habitat removal, density is higher in landscapes with more, smaller patches and more habitat edge (i.e., a higher level of habitat fragmentation per se) than in less fragmented landscapes, for the same total amount of habitat on the landscapes; (3) this positive effect of fragmentation per se on density is larger in landscapes with smaller inter-patch distances; and (4) these last two effects should be reduced or disappear over time following habitat removal. Our results did not support the first hypothesis, but they provided some support for the other three hypotheses, for two of the four Coccinellid species studied. As in other empirical studies of fragmentation per se on population density, the effects of fragmentation per se were weak and positive (when they did occur). This is the first study to document a transient effect of fragmentation per se on population density, and to show that this effect depends on inter-patch distances. We suggest that fragmentation per se increased the rate of immigration to patches, resulting in higher population densities in more fragmented landscapes.
