Objectives: The objective of this narrative review is to explore the advantages and limitations of VHs in delivering healthcare, including access to specialized professionals, streamlined communication, efficient scheduling, integration of electronic health records, ongoing monitoring, and support, transcending geographical boundaries, and resource optimization. Methods: Review of literature. Results: The national healthcare systems are facing an alarming rise in pressure due to global shifts. Virtual hospitals (VH) offer a practical solution to numerous systemic challenges, including rising costs and increased workloads for healthcare providers. VH also facilitate the delivery of personalized services and enable the monitoring of patients beyond the conventional confines of healthcare settings, reducing the reliance on waiting medicine carried out in doctors' offices or hospitals. This paper presents and explores a diffusion model that generalizes Brownian motion (BM). On the one hand, as BM: the model's mean square displacement grows linearly in time, and the model is Gaussian and selfsimilar (with Hurst exponent 1 2 ). On the other hand, in sharp contrast to BM: the model is not Markov, its increments are not stationary, and its non-overlapping increments are not independent. Moreover, the model exhibits a host of statistical properties that are dramatically different than those of BM: aging and anti-aging, positive and negative momenta, correlated velocities, persistence and anti-persistence, aging Wiener–Khinchin spectra, and more. Conventionally, researchers resort to anomalous-diffusion models—e.g. fractional BM and scaled BM (both with Hurst exponents different than 1 2 )—to attain such properties. This model establishes that such properties are attainable well within the realm of diffusion. As it is seemingly Brownian yet highly non-Brownian, the model is termed Weird BM. Forecasting epidemic scenarios has been critical to many decision-makers in imposing various public health interventions. Despite progresses in determining the magnitude and timing of epidemics, epidemic peak time predictions for H1N1 and COVID-19 were inaccurate, with the peaks delayed with respect to predictions. Here, we show that infection and recovery rate fluctuations play a critical role in peak timing. Using a susceptible–infected–recovered model with daily fluctuations on control parameters, we show that infection counts follow a lognormal distribution at the beginning of an epidemic wave, similar to price distributions for financial assets. The epidemic peak time of the stochastic solution exhibits an inverse Gaussian probability distribution, fitting the spread of the epidemic peak times observed across Italian regions. We also show that, for a given basic reproduction number R 0 , the deterministic model anticipates the peak with respect to the most probable and average peak time of the stochastic model. The epidemic peak time distribution allows one for a robust estimation of the epidemic evolution. Considering these results, we believe that the parameters' dynamical fluctuations are paramount to accurately predict the epidemic peak time and should be introduced in epidemiological models. Several European countries have suspended the inoculation of the AstraZeneca vaccine out of suspicion that it causes deep vein thrombosis. In this letter, we report some Fermi estimates performed using a stochastic model aimed at making a risk–benefit analysis of the interruption of the delivery of the AstraZeneca vaccine in France and Italy. Our results clearly show that excess deaths due to the interruption of the vaccination campaign injections largely overrun those due to thrombosis even in worst case scenarios of frequency and gravity of the vaccine side effects. We perform an experimental and theoretical study of the wave pattern generated by the leg strokes of water striders during a propulsion cycle. Using the synthetic schlieren method, we are able to measure the dynamic response of the free surface accurately. In order to match experimental conditions, we extend Bühler's theory of impulsive forcing (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 573, 2007, pp. 211-236) to finite depth. We demonstrate the improved ability of this approach to reproduce the experimental findings, once the observed continuous forcing and hence non-zero temporal and spatial extent of the leg strokes is also taken into account. The dynamics of a thin elastic sheet lubricated by a narrow layer of liquid is relevant to various situations and length scales. As a continuation of our previous work on viscous wakes (Ledesma-Alonso et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 792, 2016, pp. 829-849), we study theoretically the effects of an external pressure disturbance moving at constant speed along the surface of a thin lubricated elastic sheet. In the comoving frame, the imposed pressure field creates a stationary deformation of the free interface that spatially vanishes in the far-field region. The shape of the wake and the way it decays depend on the speed and size of the external disturbance, as well as the rheological properties of both the elastic and liquid layers. Previously, we developed a minimal model based on random cooperative strings for the relaxation of supercooled liquids in the bulk and near free interfaces, and we recovered some key experimental observations. In this article, after recalling the main ingredients of the cooperative string model, we study the effective glass transition and surface mobility of various experimentally relevant confined geometries: freestanding films, supported films, spherical particles, and cylindrical particles, with free interfaces and/or passive substrates. Finally, by canceling and restarting any cooperative-chain realization reaching the boundary with a smaller number of steps than the bulk cooperativity, we account for a purely attractive substrate, and explore the impact of the latter in the previous geometries. Despite significant therapeutic advances, lung cancer remains the biggest killer among cancers. In France, there is no national screening program against lung cancer. Thus, in this perspective, the Foch Hospital decided to implement a pilot and clinical low-dose CT screening program to evaluate the efficiency of such screening. The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalent findings of this low-dose CT screening program. Participants were recruited in the screening program through general practitioners (GPs), pharmacists, and specialists from June 2023 to June 2024. The inclusion criteria included male or female participants aged 50 to 80 years, current smokers or former smokers who had quit less than 15 years prior, with a smoking history of over 20 pack-years. Chest CT scans were conducted at Foch Hospital using a low-dose CT protocol based on volume mode with a multi-slice scanner (≥60 slices) without contrast injection. In total, 477 participants were recruited in the CT scan screening, 235 (49%) were males with a median age of 60 years [56-67] and 35 smoke pack-years [29-44] and 242 females (51%) with a median age of 60 years [55-60] and 30 smoke pack-years [25-40]. Eight participants showed positive nodules on CT scan, as a 1.7% rate. 66.7% of diagnosed cancers were in early stages (0-I). It is feasible to implement structured lung cancer screening using low-dose CT in a real-world setting among the general population. We study the first-passage time, the distribution of the maximum, and the absorption probability of fractional Brownian motion of Hurst parameter H with both a linear and a nonlinear drift. The latter appears naturally when applying nonlinear variable transformations. Via a perturbative expansion in ɛ=H-1/2, we give the first-order corrections to the classical result for Brownian motion analytically. Using a recently introduced adaptive-bisection algorithm, which is much more efficient than the standard Davies-Harte algorithm, we test our predictions for the first-passage time on grids of effective sizes up to N_{eff}=2^{28}≈2.7×10^{8} points. The agreement between theory and simulations is excellent, and by far exceeds in precision what can be obtained by scaling alone.

Motivated by recent experimental results on glassy polymer nanoparticles, we develop a minimal theoretical framework for the glass transition in spherical confinement. This is accomplished using our cooperative-string model for supercooled dynamics, that was successful at recovering the bulk phenomenology and describing the thin-film anomalies. In particular, we obtain predictions for the mobile-layer thickness as a function of temperature, and for the effective glass-transition temperature as a function of the radius of the spherical nanoparticle - including the existence of a critical particle radius below which vitrification never occurs. Finally, we compare the theoretical results to experimental data on polystyrene from the recent literature, and we discuss the latter.
