The invasion of the golden mussel has resulted in considerable environmental and socioeconomic alterations, which present a considerable threat to the native biodiversity and sustainability of the region. Understanding the distribution and biological characteristics of this Asian mussel, as well as its interaction with human activities, is of the utmost importance to developing effective strategies for mitigating and preventing its further spread. This study examines the dispersal route and incidence of golden mussels, tracing their movement from initial populations in Argentina to their arrival in the São Francisco River Basin (SFR). The presence of the mussel was confirmed through an integrative assessment that included shell taxonomic analyses and mitochondrial DNA signatures. This assessment identified populations located 7.5 km from the river's mouth, close to the Atlantic Ocean, in areas such as shrimp farms, artisanal ports, and marinas. The analysis of mitochondrial DNA revealed the presence of South-American-specific and shared ancestral haplotypes in the SFR, Grande River, and Argentina. These findings indicate that intracontinental colonization toward the northeast region of South America originated from Asian populations that entered South America via Argentina. The absence of Asian-specific signatures in the SFR, combined with a geomorphological structure unsuitable for large ports or transoceanic vessels, supports the hypothesis of the intracontinental dispersal of Limnoperna fortunei. Natural selection in the cave habitat has resulted in unique phenotypic traits (including pigmentation loss and ocular degeneration) in the Mexican tetra Astyanax mexicanus, considered a model species for evolutionary research. A. mexicanus has a karyotype of 2n = 50 chromosomes, and long-read sequencing and quantitative trait linkage maps (QTLs) have completely reconstructed the reference genome at the chromosomal level. In the current work, we performed whole chromosome isolation by microdissection and total amplification using DOP-PCR and Whole Chromosome Painting (WCP), followed by sequencing on the Illumina NextSeq platform, to investigate the microstructure of the large and conserved metacentric chromosome 1 of A. mexicanus. The sequences aligned to linkage block 3 of the reference genome, as determined by processing the reads with the DOPseq pipeline and characterizing the satellites with the TAREAN program. In addition, part of the sequences was anchored in linkage blocks that have not yet been assigned to the chromosomes. Furthermore, fluorescence in situ hybridization using WCP 1 carried out in other nearby species revealed a high degree of chromosome conservation, which allows us to hypothesize a common origin of this element. The physical mapping of the repetitive marker sequences provided a micro- and macrostructural overview and confirmed their position in chromosome pair 1. Simple Summary: The genus Rineloricaria of Neotropical armored catfish has several species with chromosomal polymorphism, which is where individuals of the same population have different numbers of chromosomes and chromosome structures. This characteristic affects how these fish reproduce and adapt, but we do not fully understand its role in the evolution of this fish group. This study looks at Rineloricaria lanceolata, a species known for its chromosome polymorphism. It aims to understand how these different karyotypes arise and how individuals with different karyotypes can still produce offspring even when there is an imbalance in gamete generation. We used one individual as a model to find out how the karyotype was created. It turned out that two chromosomes from different pairs fused together to form a third larger chromosome. This resulted in an odd number of chromosomes, which led to different combinations of gametes being formed in meiosis because of how the chromosomes paired. Chromosomal polymorphism is a significant aspect of population genetics, influencing the adaptation and evolution of species. In Rineloricaria lanceolata, a Neotropical fish species, chromosomal polymorphism has been observed, yet the underlying mechanisms and evolutionary implications remain poorly understood. This article aims to investigate the chromosomal polymorphism in Rineloricaria lanceolata, focusing on elucidating the meiotic behavior of karyotypic variants and tracing the phylogenetic origins of this polymorphism within the genus. Satellite DNAs (satDNAs) are tandemly repeated sequences that are usually located on the heterochromatin, and the entire collection of satDNAs within a genome is called satellitome. Primarily, these sequences are not under selective pressure and evolve by concerted evolution, resulting in elevated rates of divergence between the satDNA profiles of reproductive isolated species/populations. Here, we characterized two additional satellitomes of Characiformes fish (Colossoma macropomum and Piaractus mesopotamicus) that diverged approximately 30 million years ago, while still retaining conserved karyotype features. The results we obtained indicated that several satDNAs (50% of satellite sequences in P. mesopotamicus and 43% in C. macropomum) show levels of conservation between the analyzed species, in the nucleotide and chromosomal levels. Simple Summary: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the Trichlorfon effects on the retrotransposable elements in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) genome, which is a highly popular and well-known fish in the Amazon with a large reproduction number mediated by pisciculture. Thereby, tambaqui specimens were submitted to two different Trichlorfon concentrations (30% and 50% of LC50–96 h) under experimental conditions. The retrotransposons were analyzed using the FISH technique and the heterochromatin standard with the C-band technique. The retrotransposons studied presented a dispersed distribution profile in the tambaqui karyotype with Rex3 being more prominent than the others, showing the greatest increase in markings. Furthermore, the heterochromatin profile showed that these retrotransposons can be found in the heterochromatic portions of the chromosomes. Thus, it was observed that Trichlorfon has an activation mechanism for these retroelements, especially Rex3. Rex retroelements are the best-known transposable elements class and are broadly distributed through fish and also individual genomes, playing an important role in their evolutionary dynamics. Several agents can stress these elements; among them, there are some parasitic compounds such as the organochlorophosphate Trichlorfon. Consequently, knowing that the organochlorophosphate Trichlorfon is indiscriminately used as an antiparasitic in aquaculture, the current study aimed to analyze the effects of this compound on the activation of the Transposable Elements (TEs) Rex1, Rex3, and Rex6 and the structure of heterochromatin in the mitotic chromosomes of the tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). For this, two concentrations of the pesticide were used: 30% (0.261 mg/L) and 50% (0.435 mg/L) of the recommended LC50–96 h concentration (0.87 mg/L) for this fish species. The results revealed a dispersed distribution for Rex1 and Rex6 retroelements. Rex3 showed an increase in both marking intensity and distribution, as well as enhanced chromosomal heterochromatinization. This probably happened by the mediation of epigenetic adaptive mechanisms, causing the retroelement mobilization to be repressed. However, this behavior was most evident when Trichlorfon concentrations and exposure times were the greatest, reflecting the genetic flexibility necessary for this species to successfully adapt to environmental changes. Tourism in marine environments is growing each year, especially in regions with attractive coastlines. One of the main activities practised by tourists is offering food, normally bread, to fish. This activity can result in negative impacts that are still not fully understood. Such impacts were previously detected among omnivores, but fish at other trophic levels also respond to feeding by humans.The effects of supplementary fish feeding by tourists on the diet of a coral reef predatorial haemulid fish, a common reef fish in many tourist destinations, were analysed. Specimens were sampled from one location in which tourists frequently feed the fish and another in which fish maintain their natural diet, both in a marine protected area. The standard length, total weight, hepatosomatic index, condition factor, starch content, and diet composition of fish from the two locations were compared.Specimens fed by tourists were generally larger than those consuming a natural diet, but weight, hepatosomatic index, and condition factor were not statistically different. Diet composition varied between the two areas, with almost half of the stomach contents from specimens collected in the supplementary feeding area composed of starch. Considering the natural diet of this species, carbohydrate ingestion can interfere with energy accumulation. Additionally, natural prey species were being consumed on a smaller scale.These results shed light on the controversial issue of supplementary fish feeding as a tourist attraction and provide information to help shape effective ecotourism management. In this regard, the offered food volume should be banned in more sensitive environments, reduced in remaining areas and food quality should be controlled to make ecotourism a more sustainable activity globally. Cichlids constitute a diverse monophyletic group that have developed adaptive strategies to thrive in diverse environments. Andinoacara represents an example of diversification on the South American Andean uplift, providing a key model for understanding the evolution of biogeographic patterns. In this study, we analyzed the species Andinoacara latifrons using two mitochondrial markers (COI , cytb) and one nuclear marker (RAG1) in a populational level. Sequences were obtained through tissue collection and from the GenBank database. Populational analysis showed significant structuration among populations, also corroborated with population pairwise F st results. Fu's Fs and Tajima's D results showed populations that seems to be under populational expansion. We identified 22 haplotypes using cytb. The population associations in the Cauca haplotype are related to the Momposina depression and the mixture of the Cauca-Magdalena river basins in the lower Cauca-Magdalena region. We constructed a new phylogenetic tree, which grouped mainly two A. latifrons lineages: (1) an upper Magdalena and Catatumbo clade and (2) an upper Cauca and upper Magdalena clade. Thus, A. latifrons represents a diverse entity that contributes to our understanding of the evolutionary history of northern South America. Our findings provide insight into devising public policies in determining refuges for the preservation of biodiversity in the lower Cauca and Magdalena regions in Colombia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
