Ocular manifestations of leukemia are often bilateral and involve all ocular structures with non-specific features like retinal hemorrhages, cotton wool spots and choroidal infiltrates. We report a rare, atypical initial presentation of acute myeloid leukemia with unilateral central retinal vein occlusion in a middle-aged male. This case will raise awareness among ophthalmologists to recognize and diagnose underlying systemic disease early and decrease systemic morbidity in consultation with a hematologist.

This paper documents the hopes, desires and structural betrayals experienced by young people attending transfer schools in New York City. Transfer schools enroll more than 15,000 students each year who are disproportionately young people of color, poor and working-class youth, from immigrant families, and youth with disabilities. Most have fallen behind on academic benchmarks. Many have been systematically pushed out of school through zero tolerance policies, high stakes testing cultures, and a lack of culturally relevant approaches to curriculum and pedagogy. This paper explores survey responses from 842 transfer school students, collected as part of a broader participatory action research study. Our analysis reveals that many transfer school students persist in the face of multiple obstacles that disrupt their educational progress, including material insecurity, previously alienating school experiences, housing insecurity, violence and struggles with mental health. Moreover, we find that students experience the transfer schools in this study as relationally rich, caring, intellectually rigorous, and mutually accountable learning communities that help them overcome obstacles that previously held them back. Our analysis confirms transfer school students' desires and persistence in the face of adversity and demonstrates the academic and socio-emotional commitments and impact of educators and counselors in transfer schools. Under current federal and state accountability frameworks, transfer schools are threatened by one-size-fits all metrics, punitive policies, and racialized austerity. As such, their importance and impact is consistently mismeasured and under-acknowledged. In this paper, we present evidence that these schools represent the radical rim of what is possible in public education, and we argue that we must support their efforts, honor their commitments, and establish a more equitable system for evaluating the essential work they do.

Early childhood teacher candidates (TCs) need preparatory experiences using authentic assessments to inform their instructional practices with rural learners and their families. The shift to virtual field placements in response to COVID-19 restrictions pushed faculty in teacher preparation programs to reimagine how to engage TCs in meaningful experiences using authentic assessments with children and families. This study explores how TCs experienced authentic assessment practices using an online assessment management system, "Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System Interactive" (AEPSi), during virtual field experiences. Fifty-five undergraduate and graduate TCs from 11 universities (10 U.S. & 1 international) completed a 45-item survey about their experience. Teacher candidates articulated knowledge and skills aligned with best practices underpinning authentic assessments. The virtual learning environment created opportunities for faculty to reimagine practices for promoting TCs' understandings of assessment in early childhood special education contexts. We discuss implications for training TCs in rural areas to use authentic assessment.

Leadership engrosses multiple actors and unique contexts that unfold along different timescales. The purpose of this study is to review the literature on authentic leadership, principal leadership, and distributed leadership and examine the current trends due to the pandemic and the growth of information and communication technology in higher educational institutions (HEI). This qualitative study adopted a literature review and in-depth interviews of 10 educational faculty, 10 students, and 9 non-HEI organisational leaders in India, predominantly based on a semi-structured script. Our study used the approaches of purposive sampling and inductive analysis. Employing social cognitive theory, our study reports on participants' perceptions of existing leaders and discusses organisational behavioural attributes that need focus for leadership development. The hybrid multi-layered model of leadership styles is suggested as a practical approach in India. This study contributes to the educational leadership development literature by highlighting the expectations of students and non-HEI organisational leaders on the fundamental role of educational leaders and behavioural necessities.
