Abstract

Abstract We propose a minimal setup that realises dynamical inflection point inflation, and, using the same field content, generates neutrino masses, a baryon asymmetry of the universe, and dark matter. A dark SU(2) D gauge sector with a dark scalar doublet playing the role of inflaton is considered along with several doublet and singlet fermions sufficient to realise multiple inflection points in the inflaton potential. The singlet fermions couple to SM leptons and generate neutrino masses via the inverse seesaw mechanism. Those fermions also decay asymmetrically and out of equilibrium, generating a baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis. Some of the fermion doublets are dark matter, and they are produced via inflaton decay and freeze-in annihilation of the same fermions that generate the lepton asymmetry. Reheating, leptogenesis, and dark matter are all at the TeV scale.

2. Searching for heavy leptophilic Z′: from lepton colliders to gravitational waves

Abstract

Abstract We study the phenomenology of leptophilic Z′ gauge bosons at the future high-energy e + e − and μ + μ − colliders, as well as at the gravitational wave observatories. The leptophilic Z′ model, although well-motivated, remains largely unconstrained from current low-energy and collider searches for Z′ masses above O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (100 GeV), thus providing a unique opportunity for future lepton colliders. Taking U 1 L α − L β $$ \textrm{U}{(1)}_{L_{\alpha }-{L}_{\beta }} $$ (α, β = e, μ, τ) models as concrete examples, we show that future e + e − and μ + μ − colliders with multi-TeV center-of-mass energies provide unprecedented sensitivity to heavy leptophilic Z′ bosons. Moreover, if these U(1) models are classically scale-invariant, the phase transition at the U(1) symmetry-breaking scale tends to be strongly first-order with ultra-supercooling, and leads to observable stochastic gravitational wave signatures. We find that the future sensitivity of gravitational wave observatories, such as advanced LIGO-VIRGO and Cosmic Explorer, can be complementary to the collider experiments, probing higher Z′ masses up to O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (104 TeV), while being consistent with naturalness and perturbativity considerations.

Abstract

Abstract We study a scenario where both dark matter and heavy right handed neutrino (RHN) responsible for leptogenesis acquire masses by crossing the relativistic bubble walls formed as a result of a TeV scale supercooled first order phase transition (FOPT). While this leads to a large out-of-equilibrium abundance of right handed neutrino inside the bubble sufficient to produce the required lepton asymmetry, the dark matter being lighter can still remain in equilibrium with its relic being set by subsequent thermal freeze-out. A classical conformal symmetry ensures the origin of mass via FOPT induced by a singlet scalar while also ensuring supercooling leading to enhanced gravitational wave amplitude within the sensitivity of the LISA experiment. A minimal scenario with three RHN, one inert scalar doublet and one singlet scalar as additional fields beyond the standard model is sufficient to realize this possibility which also favours inert RHN dark matter over inert scalar doublet.

Abstract

This paper seeks to investigate the current pandemic from a New Materialist perspective. New materialist philosophy through its radical understanding of agency and subjectivity provides the tools to grapple with the viral entity without placing it within the anthropocentric frame. At the same time, New Materialism can help understand the thick mesh of intra-action between the human and the non-human. The paper will study how the human body and the viral entity each and how such a relationship calls for an ethics of responsibility. Through a close reading of New Materialist philosophers like Jane Bennett, Karen Barad, Rosi Bradoti and through the employment of their ideas such as intra-action, agential realism and operator, the paper attempts to reach at an understanding of the pandemic which is accommodative by nature. The paper also provides a planetary understanding of health and illness and argues for a "more than human" approach to health care and medical knowledge. The paper derives perspectives from Spinoza’s philosophy to understand the cellular interactions between the human cell and the viral entity.

Abstract

Abstract Motivated by the first observation of coherent-elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering at the COHERENT experiment, we confront the neutrino dipole portal giving rise to the transition of the standard model neutrinos to sterile neutrinos with the recently released CENNS 10 data from the liquid argon as well as the CsI data of the COHERENT experiment. Performing a statistical analysis of those data, we show how the transition magnetic moment can be constrained for the range of the sterile neutrino mass between 10 keV and 40 MeV.

Abstract

Abstract We have shown a new scenario of successful leptogenesis with one L violating coupling and a relative Majorana phase playing the role of CP violation. This is in contrast to the usual consideration of Feynman diagram with at least two L violating couplings. We have considered R-parity violating minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) for leptogenesis at TeV scale. This scenario is also consistent with generating light neutrino mass if asymmetry is generated through semileptonic $$\lambda ^{\prime }$$ λ ′ coupling.

Abstract We propose a novel mechanism to realize leptogenesis through the Breit- Wigner resonance of a dark U(1) D gauge boson Z D , which mediates lepton number vi- olating annihilations of dark matter (DM) in the context of the scotogenic model with a U(1) D . The processes occur out of equilibrium and DM freezes out later giving rise to the observed abundance. The CP violation required for leptogenesis can be achieved by the interference between tree-level t-channel scattering of DM and the subsequent 1-loop mediated by Z D , which arises due to the unremovable imaginary part of either the Z D propagator coming from its self-energy correction or the 1-loop giving rise to the effective coupling of Z D ν ¯ ν $$ {Z}_D\overline{\nu}\nu $$ .

8. TeV scale leptogenesis via dark sector scatterings

Abstract

Abstract We propose a novel scenario of generating lepton asymmetry via annihilation and coannihilation of dark sector particles including t-channel processes. In order to realistically implement this idea, we consider the scotogenic model having three right handed neutrinos and a new scalar doublet, all of which are odd under an in-built $$Z_2$$ Z2 symmetry. The lightest $$Z_2$$ Z2 odd particle, if electromagnetically neutral, can be a dark matter candidate while annihilation and coannihilation between different $$Z_2$$ Z2 odd particles into standard model leptons serve as the source of lepton asymmetry. The light neutrino masses arise at one loop level with $$Z_2$$ Z2 odd fields going inside the loop. We show that experimental data related to light neutrinos, dark matter relic abundance and baryon asymmetry can be simultaneously satisfied in the model for two different cases: one with fermion dark matter and the other with scalar dark matter. In both scenarios, t-channel annihilation as well as coannihilation of $$Z_2$$ Z2 odd particles play a non-trivial role in producing the non-zero CP asymmetry. Both the scenarios remain allowed from DM direct detection while keeping the scale of leptogenesis as low as TeV or less, lower than the one for vanilla leptogenesis scenario in scotogenic model along with the additional advantage of explaining the baryon-dark matter coincidence to some extent. Due to such low scale, the model is testable through rare decay experiments looking for charged lepton flavour violation.

Abstract

Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo are monitoring the sky and collecting gravitational-wave strain data with sufficient sensitivity to detect signals routinely. In this paper we describe the data recorded by these instruments during their first and second observing runs. The main data products are gravitational-wave strain time series sampled at 16384 Hz. The datasets that include this strain measurement can be freely accessed through the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center at http://gw-openscience.org, together with data-quality information essential for the analysis of LIGO and Virgo data, documentation, tutorials, and supporting software.

Abstract

Abstract We consider a simple extension of the minimal left-right symmetric model (LRSM) in order to explain the PeV neutrino events seen at the IceCube experiment from a heavy decaying dark matter. The dark matter sector is composed of two fermions: one at PeV scale and the other at TeV scale such that the heavier one can decay into the lighter one and two neutrinos. The gauge annihilation cross sections of PeV dark matter are not large enough to generate its relic abundance within the observed limit. We include a pair of real scalar triplets Ω L,R which can bring the thermally overproduced PeV dark matter abundance into the observed range through late time decay and consequent entropy release thereby providing a consistent way to obtain the correct relic abundance without violating the unitarity bound on dark matter mass. Another scalar field, a bitriplet under left-right gauge group is added to assist the heavier dark matter decay. The presence of an approximate global U(1) X symmetry can naturally explain the origin of tiny couplings required for long-lived nature of these decaying particles. We also show, how such an extended LRSM can be incorporated within a non-supersymmetric SO(10) model where the gauge coupling unification at a very high scale naturally accommodate a PeV scale intermediate symmetry, required to explain the PeV events at IceCube.

Abstract

Perioperative visual loss (POVL) is a rare but potentially serious complication of long-duration surgeries in prone position under general anesthesia. The mechanism of visual loss after surgery, and its incidence, is difficult to determine. It is primarily associated with cardiothoracic and spine surgeries. The proposed causes include corneal injury, retinal ischemia (central retinal artery occlusion/branch retinal artery occlusion [CRAO/BRAO]), ischemic optic neuropathy (ION), and cortical blindness. A large, recent multicenter case-control study has identified risk factors associated with ION for patients undergoing spinal instrumentation surgery in prone position. These include male sex, obesity, use of Wilson's frame, long duration of anesthesia/surgery, larger estimated blood loss, and larger relative use of crystalloids for compensation of blood loss. This report describes a relatively healthy, 71-year-old female patient who developed significant visual impairment after thoracolumbar spine surgery in prone position under general anesthesia. The case raises dilemmas regarding the preoperative identification of patients who should be informed of the risk of POVL, and by whom.

12. Galactic center gamma ray excess in a radiative neutrino mass model

Abstract

The Fermi gamma ray space telescope data have pointed towards an excess of gamma rays with a peak around 1–3 GeV in the region surrounding the galactic center. This anomalous excess can be described well by a dark matter candidate having mass in the range 31–40 GeV annihilating into bb¯ pairs with a cross section of 〈σv〉≃(1.4–2.0)×10−26 cm3/s. In this work we explore the possibility of having such a dark matter candidate within the framework of a radiative neutrino mass model. The model is a simple extension of the standard model by an additional U(1)X gauge symmetry where the standard model neutrino masses arise both at tree level as well as radiatively by the anomaly free addition of one singlet fermion NR and two triplet fermions Σ1R, Σ2R with suitable Higgs scalars. The spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking is achieved in such a way which results in a residual Z2 symmetry hence providing a stable cold dark matter candidate. We show that the singlet fermionic dark matter candidate in our model can give rise to the galactic center gamma ray excess. The parameter space which simultaneously satisfies the constraints on relic density, direct detection scattering as well as collider bounds essentially corresponds to an s-wave resonance where the gauge boson mass mX is approximately twice that of dark matter mass mχ. We also discuss the compatibility of such a light fermion singlet dark matter with light neutrino mass.

Abstract

We study the possibility of generating tiny neutrino mass through a combination of type I and type II seesaw mechanism within the framework of an abelian extension of standard model. The model also provides a naturally stable dark matter candidate in terms of the lightest neutral component of a scalar doublet. We compute the relic abundance of such a dark matter candidate and also point out how the strength of type II seesaw term can affect the relic abundance of dark matter. Such a model which connects neutrino mass and dark matter abundance has the potential of being verified or ruled out in the ongoing neutrino, dark matter, as well as accelerator experiments.

14. Effect of SnAgCu composition on soldering performance .

Abstract

Purpose - Tombstoning and voiding have been plaguing the surface mount assembly industry for decades. The recent global move toward lead-free soldering and the extensive adoption of microvia technology further aggravate the problems. The present study investigates the impact of SnAgCu (SAC) alloy composition on these important issues. Design/methodology/approach - In this study, tombstoning and voiding at microvias are studied for a series of SAC lead-free solders, with an attempt to identify a possible "composition window" for controlling these problems. Properties which may be related to these problems, such as alloy surface tension, alloy melting pattern, and solder wetting behaviour, were investigated in order to assess the critical characteristics required to control these problems. Findings - The results indicate that the tombstoning of SAC alloys is greatly influenced by the solder composition. Both the wetting force and the wetting time at a temperature well above the melting point have no correlation with the tombstoning frequencies. Because the tombstoning is caused by imbalanced wetting forces, the results suggest that the tombstoning may be controlled by the wetting at the onset of the paste melting stage. A maximum tombstoning incidence was observed for the 95.5Sn3.5Ag1Cu alloy. The tombstoning rate decreased with increasing deviation in Ag content from this composition. A differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) study indicated that this was mainly due to the increasing presence of the pasty phase in the solders, which result in a slower wetting speed at the onset of solder paste melting stage. Surface tension plays a minor role, with lower surface tension correlating with a higher tombstoning rate. The voiding rate at the microvias was studied by employing simulated microvias. The voiding level was lowest for the 95.5Sn3.8Ag0.7Cu and 95.5Sn3.5Ag1Cu alloys, and increases with a further decrease in the Ag content. The results indicate that voiding at microvias is governed by the via filling and the exclusion of fluxes. The voiding rate decreased with decreasing surface tension and increasing wetting force, which in turn is dictated by the solder wetting or spreading. Both low surface tension and high solder wetting prevents the flux from being entrapped within a microvia. A fast wetting speed may also facilitate reducing voiding. However, this factor is considered not as important as the final solder coverage area. Research limitations/implications - In general, compositions which deviate from the ternary eutectic SAC in Ag content, particularly with a Ag content lower than 3.5Ag, exhibit a greater solid fraction at the onset of melting, resulting in a lower tombstoning rate, presumably due to a slower wetting speed. The SAC compositions with an Ag content lower than 3.5 per cent, such as 2.5Ag, resulted in a lower tombstoning rate with minimal risk of forming Ag3Sn intermetallic platelets. On the other hand, ternary eutectic SAC exhibits a lower surface tension resulting in an easier solder spread or solder wetting, and consequently exhibit a higher tombstoning frequency and a lower incidence of voiding. Practical implications - Provides a solution to the tombstoning problem in lead-free soldering. 15. The discovery reach of CP violation in neutrino oscillation with non-standard interaction effects.

Abstract

We have studied the CP violation discovery reach in a neutrino oscillation experiment with superbeam, neutrino factory and monoenergetic neutrino beam from the electron capture process. For NSI satisfying model-dependent bound for shorter baselines (like CERN-Fréjus set-up) there is insignificant effect of NSI on the the discovery reach of CP violation due to δ. Particularly, for the superbeam and neutrino factory we have also considered relatively longer baselines for which there could be significant NSI effects on CP violation discovery reach for higher allowed values of NSI. For the monoenergetic beam only shorter baselines are considered to study CP violation with different nuclei as neutrino sources. Interestingly for non-standard interactions— and of neutrinos with matter during propagation in longer baselines in the superbeam, there is the possibility of better discovery reach of CP violation than that with only Standard Model interactions of neutrinos with matter. For complex NSI we have shown the CP violation discovery reach in the plane of Dirac phase δ and NSI phase . The CP violation due to some values of δ remain unobservable with present and near future experimental facilities in the superbeam and neutrino factory. However, in the presence of some ranges of off-diagonal NSI phase values there are some possibilities of discovering total CP violation for any value even at confidence level for neutrino factory. Our analysis indicates that for some values of NSI phases total CP violation may not be at all observable for any values of δ. Combination of shorter and longer baselines could indicate in some cases the presence of NSI. However, in general for NSIs the CP violation discovery reach is better in neutrino factory set-ups. Using a neutrino beam from the electron capture process for nuclei Sn and 152Yb, we have shown the discovery reach of CP violation in a neutrino oscillation experiment. Particularly for Sn nuclei CP violation could be found for about 51% of the possible δ values for a baseline of 130 km with boost factor . Although the nuclei 152Yb is technically more feasible for the production of a mono-energetic beam, it is found to be unsuitable in obtaining good discovery reach of CP violation. Abstract

Kyoto Animation can rightly be called one of the leading studios of Japanese animation, and its works have been at the forefront of anime production in terms of both techniques and aesthetics. This is why it has been subjected to academic scrutiny by several notable anime scholars. However, no significant studies have been conducted on the works of Kyoto Animation from the perspective of the studio as a whole, or identified consistent themes and patterns flowing throughout them. This paper aims to rectify that gap by studying four works by the most prolific directors of Kyoto Animation (the Haruhi Suzumiya series (2006-2010), Beyond the Boundary (2013-15), A Silent Voice (2016) and Miss Kobayashi’s Maid Dragon (2017)) from the perspective of the Japanese Buddhist conception of tariki (Other-power) in order to tease out the central theme that lies at the heart of the studio’s work, and argues that Other-power (redefined as affective transformation) and the presence of a community of peers to nurture it offers powerful interpretive frameworks through which to understand these, and other, works by the studio.
