Two fission experiments have been performed at GANIL using 238U beams at different energies and light targets. Different fissioning systems were produced with centre of mass energies from 10 to 240 MeV and their decay by fission was investigated with GANIL spectrometers. Fission-fragment isotopic distributions have been obtained. The evolution with impinging energy of their properties, the neutron excess and the width of the neutron-number distributions, gives important insights into the dynamics of the fusion-fission mechanism.

The Super Separator Spectrometer S3 is a device designed for experiments with the very high intensity stable ion beam of the superconducting linear accelerator of the SPIRAL2 facility. Its Physics goals cover the study of radioactive ions produced by fusion-evaporation reactions, like superheavy elements or neutron deficient nuclei close to the proton drip line, but also neutron rich nuclei produced by multi-nucleon transfer reactions as well as ion-ion atomic interactions. It is composed of a two-step separator, with a momentum achromat followed by a mass spectrometer. Superconducting multipole triplets, combining quadruple, sextuple and octupole fields, allow a combination of high transmission and mass resolution. A specific open multipole has been designed to stop the high beam power at the first momentum dispersive plane. A decay spectroscopy detection set-up or a low energy branch can be coupled to S3 for a wide range of studies.

Background Chronic respiratory failure and heart involvement may occur in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. We aimed to assess the prognostic value of the right ventricular (RV) systolic dysfunction in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Methods and Results We studied 90 genetically proven patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy from 2010 to 2019, to obtain respiratory function and Doppler echocardiographic RV systolic function. Prognostic value was assessed in terms of death and cardiac events. The median age was 27.5 years, and median forced vital capacity was at 10% of the predicted value: 83 patients (92%) were on home mechanical ventilation. An RV systolic dysfunction was found in 46 patients (51%). In patients without RV dysfunction at inclusion, a left ventricular systolic dysfunction at inclusion was associated with a higher risk of developing RV dysfunction during follow‐up with an odds ratio of 4.5 (P=0.03). RV systolic dysfunction was significantly associated with cardiac events, mainly acute heart failure (62%) and cardiogenic shock (23%). In a multivariable Cox model, the adjusted hazard ratio was 4.96 (95% CI [1.09–22.6]; P=0.04). In terms of death, we found a significant difference between patients with RV dysfunction versus patients without RV dysfunction in the Kaplan–Meier curves (log‐rank P=0.045). Conclusions RV systolic dysfunction is frequently present in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and is associated with increased risk of cardiac events, irrespective of left ventricular dysfunction and mechanical ventilation. Abstract Nemaline myopathy (NM) is a muscle disorder with broad clinical and genetic heterogeneity. The clinical presentation of affected individuals ranges from severe perinatal muscle weakness to milder childhood-onset forms, and the disease course and prognosis depends on the gene and mutation type. To date, 14 causative genes have been identified, and ACTA1 accounts for more than half of the severe NM cases. ACTA1 encodes α-actin, one of the principal components of the contractile units in skeletal muscle. We established a homogenous cohort of ten unreported families with severe NM, and we provide clinical, genetic, histological, and ultrastructural data. The patients manifested antenatal or neonatal muscle weakness requiring permanent respiratory assistance, and most deceased within the first months of life. DNA sequencing identified known or novel ACTA1 mutations in all. Morphological analyses of the muscle biopsy specimens showed characteristic features of NM histopathology including cytoplasmic and intranuclear rods, cytoplasmic bodies, and major myofibrillar disorganization. We also detected structural anomalies of the perinuclear space, emphasizing a physiological contribution of skeletal muscle α-actin to nuclear shape. In-depth investigations of the nuclei confirmed an abnormal localization of lamin A/C, Nesprin-1, and Nesprin-2, forming the main constituents of the nuclear lamina and the LINC complex and ensuring nuclear envelope integrity. To validate the relevance of our findings, we examined muscle samples from three previously reported ACTA1 cases, and we identified the same set of structural aberrations. Moreover, we measured an increased expression of cardiac α-actin in the muscle samples from the patients with longer lifespan, indicating a potential compensatory effect. Overall, this study expands the genetic and morphological spectrum of severe ACTA1-related nemaline myopathy, improves molecular diagnosis, highlights the enlargement of the perinuclear space as an ultrastructural hallmark, and indicates a potential genotype/phenotype correlation.

This study assessed the effects of near threshold tACS-like currents on Off-center and On-Off retinal ganglion cell responsiveness in the rabbit retina eyecup preparation as a model for central nervous system effects.Materials and Methods: We made extracellular recordings in the isolated rabbit eyecup preparation using single electrodes and microelectrode arrays to measure light-evoked spike responses in different classes of Off-center and On-Off retinal ganglion cells before, during, and after brief applications of alternating currents of 1– 2 microamperes, at frequencies of 10, 20, 30, and 40 Hz.Results: tACS application sculpted the light-evoked response profiles without directly driving spiking activity of the 20 Off-center and On-Off ganglion cells we recorded from. During tACS application, Off responses were significantly enhanced for 6 cells and significantly suppressed for 14 cells, but after tACS application, Off responses were significantly enhanced for 7 cells and suppressed for 12 cells. The Off responses of the remaining two cells returned to baseline. On responses were less affected during and after tACS.Conclusion: tACS sculpts Off-center and On-Off retinal ganglion cell responsiveness. The dissimilarity of effects in different cells within the same class and the differential effects on the On and Off components of the light response within the same cell are consistent with the hypothesis that tACS acts at threshold on amacrine cells in the inner plexiform layer.Keywords: retina, tACS mechanisms, CNS, in vitro model, neural coding, neuromodulation

The increasing electrification of aircraft propulsion systems is leading to new control architectures being developed to address integration between electric machines (EMs) and gas-based turbine engines. For hybrid-electric propulsion systems, current conceptual architectures often couple electric machines with the shafts of gas turbine engines and introduce energy storage. Leveraging the electrical power system of hybridized engines, turbine electrified energy management (TEEM) is a recent control approach that improves transient operability in an effort to enable more efficient and lighter weight turbomachinery. This study seeks to expand TEEM's application beyond traditional proportional-integral (PI) control by presenting linear model predictive control (MPC) schemes to execute the TEEM concept. Through constraint selection and cost function design, transient operability goals for TEEM are considered with no external logic or saturation. Unique to the designs are the use of a washout filter, which simplifies transient detection and motor activation logic. The proposed architectures are implemented with both centralized MPC (CMPC) and distributed MPC (DMPC) approaches, and comparisons are drawn to a benchmark PI controller simulated on a nonlinear turbofan engine model at one ground condition and one cruise condition. Performance is evaluated using compressor maps, stall margin performance, and two novel metrics: transient stack usage (TSU) and transient excursion integral (TEI). Results reveal that the linear MPC scheme performs comparably to the baseline controller and can be implemented in at least two distinct configurations with potential for further modifications, thus establishing the groundwork for future investigations. This study addresses a gap in the study-abroad literature, examining both student and host family experiences of two-way cultural transmission. Interviews, participant observation and reflective journals revealed both parties sought authentic cultural experiences, but implicit forms of cultural transmission in homestay rendered preconceived notions of authenticity elusive. This discrepancy held potential for growth in cultural understanding. The authors explore implications for program design and interpretation of outcomes.

The Barra Velha Formation and other Aptian pre‐salt deposits record the history of the proto‐Atlantic basin and the rifting of Gondwana. Studies have sought to characterize the depositional environment of the basin with a focus on carbonate fabrics and magnesium silicate clays. However, the water chemistry and fluid sources in the basin, the silica cycle, and how the basin evolved over time are not fully constrained. Additionally, current understanding of the microbiota that inhabited this basin is incomplete because microfossils have rarely been identified in pre‐salt deposits, especially on the Brazilian margin. This study describes authigenic chert in the Barra Velha Formation that preserves distinct, organic‐rich structures and textures. The petrographic relationships between the chert and carbonate suggest that both formed as authigenic phases, but their formation was temporally decoupled. These relationships and δ30Si and δ18O data suggest that chert post‐dates the formation and subsequent dissolution of the carbonates, and may have formed from a different fluid. By characterizing the chert–carbonate paragenesis and mechanism of chert formation, this study provides new insights into the fluid sources and complexity of the basin. Together, the results of this research suggest that the chert precipitated as primary, authigenic phases after karstification of the carbonate from a newly introduced, low temperature, freshwater fluid that was chemically distinct from the lake water. The chert preserves organic matter that is compositionally and texturally distinct from the void‐filling bitumen associated with the classically studied carbonate facies. Based on the composition and morphologies of organic structures, this is likely primary organic matter and a morphologically diverse microfossil assemblage preserved in place at the time of chert formation. Thus, this early chert provides new insights into the water chemistry, fluid sources and silica cycle in the basin, and represents a unique taphonomic window that helps us characterize the pre‐salt basin microbiota. Limited knowledge exists regarding the chronic effect of muscular exercise on muscle function in a murine model of severe Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Here we determined the effects of 1 month of voluntary wheel running (WR), 1 month of enforced treadmill running (TR) and 1 month of mechanical overloading resulting from the removal of the synergic muscles (OVL) in mice lacking both dystrophin and desmin (DKO). Additionally, we examined the effect of activin receptor administration (AR). DKO mice, displaying severe muscle weakness, atrophy and greater susceptibility to contraction‐induced functional loss, were exercised or treated with AR at 1 month of age and in situ force production of lower leg muscle was measured at the age of 2 months. We found that TR and OVL increased absolute maximal force and the rate of force development of the plantaris muscle in DKO mice. In contrast, those of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle remained unaffected by TR and WR. Furthermore, the effects of TR and OVL on plantaris muscle function in DKO mice closely resembled those in mdx mice, a less severe murine DMD model. AR also improved absolute maximal force and the rate of force development of the TA muscle in DKO mice. In conclusion, exercise training improved plantaris muscle weakness in severely affected dystrophic mice. Consequently, these preclinical results may contribute to fostering further investigations aimed at assessing the potential benefits of exercise for DMD patients, particularly resistance training involving a low number of intense muscle contractions. Key points: Very little is known about the effects of exercise training in a murine model of severe Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). One reason is that it is feared that chronic muscular exercise, particularly that involving intense muscle contractions, could exacerbate the disease.In DKO mice lacking both dystrophin and desmin, characterized by severe lower leg muscle weakness, atrophy and fragility in comparison to the less severe DMD mdx model, we found that enforced treadmill running improved absolute maximal force of the plantaris muscle, while that of tibialis anterior muscle remained unaffected by both enforced treadmill and voluntary wheel running.Furthermore, mechanical overloading, a non‐physiological model of chronic resistance exercise, reversed plantaris muscle weakness.Consequently, our findings may have the potential to alleviate concerns and pave the way for exploring the prescription of endurance and resistance training as a viable therapeutic approach for the treatment of dystrophic patients. There is a growing interest of estimating the inherent uncertainty of photovoltaic (PV) power forecasts with probability forecasting methods to mitigate accompanying risks for system operators. This study aims to advance the field of probabilistic PV power forecast by introducing and extending deep Gaussian mixture density networks (MDNs). Using the sum of the weighted negative log likelihood of multiple Gaussian distributions as a minimizing objective, MDNs can estimate flexible uncertainty distributions with nearly all neural network structures. Thus, the advantages of advances in machine learning, in this case deep neural networks, can be exploited. To account for the epistemic (e.g., model) uncertainty as well, this study applies two ensemble approaches to MDNs. This is particularly relevant for industrial applications, as there is often no extensive (manual) adjustment of the forecast model structure for each site, and only a limited amount of training data are available during commissioning. The results of this study suggest that already seven days of training data are sufficient to generate significant improvements of 23.9% in forecasting quality measured by normalized continuous ranked probability score (NCRPS) compared to the reference case. Furthermore, the use of multiple Gaussian distributions and ensembles increases the forecast quality relatively by up to 20.5% and 19.5%, respectively.

Leaf gas exchange measurements are an important tool for inferring a plant's photosynthetic biochemistry. In most cases, the responses of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation to variable intercellular CO2 concentrations (A/Ci response curves) are used to model the maximum (potential) rate of carboxylation by ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco, Vcmax) and the rate of photosynthetic electron transport at a given incident photosynthetically active radiation flux density (PAR; JPAR). The standard Farquhar‐von Caemmerer‐Berry model is often used with default parameters of Rubisco kinetic values and mesophyll conductance to CO2 (gm) derived from tobacco that may be inapplicable across species. To study the significance of using such parameters for other species, here we measured the temperature responses of key in vitro Rubisco catalytic properties and gm in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum cv. Sicot 71) and derived Vcmax and J2000 (JPAR at 2000 µmol m−2 s−1 PAR) from cotton A/Ci curves incrementally measured at 15°C–40°C using cotton and other species‐specific sets of input parameters with our new automated fitting R package 'OptiFitACi'. Notably, parameterisation by a set of tobacco parameters produced unrealistic J2000:Vcmax ratio of <1 at 25°C, two‐ to three‐fold higher estimates of Vcmax above 15°C, up to 2.3‐fold higher estimates of J2000 and more variable estimates of Vcmax and J2000, for our cotton data compared to model parameterisation with cotton‐derived values. We determined that errors arise when using a gm,25 of 2.3 mol m−2 s−1 MPa−1 or less and Rubisco CO2‐affinities in 21% O2 (KC21%O2) at 25°C outside the range of 46–63 Pa to model A/Ci responses in cotton. We show how the A/Ci modelling capabilities of 'OptiFitACi' serves as a robust, user‐friendly, and flexible extension of 'plantecophys' by providing simplified temperature‐sensitivity and species‐specificity parameterisation capabilities to reduce variability when modelling Vcmax and J2000. This retrospective study aimed to reveal discrepancies between planned (T plan) and actual (T a c t) slot lengths of abdomen MRI exams, and to improve T p l a n by predicting slot lengths via a machine learning algorithm. T p l a n and T a c t were retrieved from RIS and modality logfiles, respectively, covering 3038 MRI exams of 17 protocols performed at an abdomen department. Comparisons showed that 30% of exams exceeded planned slot lengths. On the other hand, exams completed within planning failed to manifest good adherence to schedule, as many of them were assigned with an unnecessarily long slot. While adjusting the planned exam duration by a fixed amount of time for each protocol could move T p l a n closer to the mean or median T a c t , the large spread of T a c t would still be unaffected. This is why this study goes one step further, introducing a method to predict the required slot length not only per protocol, but for each individual exam. A Random Forest Regression model was trained on historic data to predict individual slot lengths (T pred) based on patient and exam context. The correlation between T p r e d and T a c t was found to be better than that of T p l a n and T a c t , with Pearson correlation factors of 0.66 and 0.50, respectively. The overall adherence to schedule was also improved by the prediction, as seen by a reduction of both the root mean squared error (–28%) and the standard deviation (–16%) of the differences between planned/predicted slot times and T a c t. To provide further insights into the discrepancies between planning and execution of MRI exams, nineteen exams from the Liver protocol with verified clinical information were selected. This case study showed that patient conditions, diagnostic purposes and the selection of sequences during exams could explain some variations of exam durations, but the potential for improving the exam time prediction by including this additional context is limited. Purpose: Liver T1 mapping techniques typically require long breath holds or long scan time in free‐breathing, need correction for B1+ inhomogeneities and process composite (water and fat) signals. The purpose of this work is to accelerate the multi‐slice acquisition of liver water selective T1 (wT1) mapping in a single breath hold, improving the k‐space sampling efficiency. Methods: The proposed continuous inversion‐recovery (IR) Look‐Locker methodology combines a single‐shot gradient echo spiral readout, Dixon processing and a dictionary‐based analysis for liver wT1 mapping at 3 T. The sequence parameters were adapted to obtain short scan times. The influence of fat, B1+ inhomogeneities and TE on the estimation of T1 was first assessed using simulations. The proposed method was then validated in a phantom and in 10 volunteers, comparing it with MRS and the modified Look‐Locker inversion‐recovery (MOLLI) method. Finally, the clinical feasibility was investigated by comparing wT1 maps with clinical scans in nine patients. Results: The phantom results are in good agreement with MRS. The proposed method encodes the IR‐curve for the liver wT1 estimation, is minimally sensitive to B1+ inhomogeneities and acquires one slice in 1.2 s. The volunteer results confirmed the multi‐slice capability of the proposed method, acquiring nine slices in a breath hold of 11 s. The present work shows robustness to B1+ inhomogeneities (wT1,NoB1+=1.07wT1,B1+−45.63,R2=0.99), good repeatability (wT1,2°=1.0wT1,1°−2.14,R2=0.96) and is in better agreement with MRS (wT1=0.92wT1MRS+103.28,R2=0.38) than is MOLLI (wT1MOLLI=0.76wT1MRS+254.43,R2=0.44). The wT1 maps in patients captured diverse lesions, thus showing their clinical feasibility. Conclusion: A single‐shot spiral acquisition can be combined with a continuous IR Look‐Locker method to perform rapid repeatable multi‐slice liver water T1 mapping at a rate of 1.2 s per slice without a B1+ map. In order to bring forth the specific intricacies of the migration experience among comparatively understudied immigrant and refugee youth, this article bridges an intersectionality framework with multicultural education scholars' calls to flexibility and fluidity in conceptualizing culture and identity. Drawing on in-depth interviews, the analysis is anchored by two pervasive themes: (a) the dynamic nature of identity positions whose intersections make the adaption of youth irreducibly nuanced and (b) the need for self-definition in the process of adaptation. Racial and ethnic positioning, national origin, class, legal status, and religion intersected in the participants' lives in important ways, but they did not fulfill the same role across the cases. Attention to how these social locations intersect offers insight into the importance of context-based examinations of immigrant youth positioning, in addition to the centrality of structural analyses. Taking on an intersectionality lens, educators can engage both with the need to examine newcomer youth's situations structurally, while also tuning in to their interpretations, local contexts, and how various structural positions are foregrounded or obscured in their immigrant and refugee students' paths.

Numerous approaches are being developed to promote post-natal muscle growth based on attenuating Myostatin/Activin signalling for clinical uses such as the treatment neuromuscular diseases, cancer cachexia and sarcopenia. However there have been concerns about the effects of inhibiting Activin on tissues other than skeletal muscle. We intraperitoneally injected mice with the Activin ligand trap, sActRIIB, in young, adult and a progeric mouse model. Treatment at any stage in the life of the mouse rapidly increased muscle mass. However at all stages of life the treatment decreased the weights of the testis. Not only were the testis smaller, but they contained fewer sperm compared to untreated mice. We found that the hypertrophic muscle phenotype was lost after the cessation of sActRIIB treatment but abnormal testis phenotype persisted. In summary, attenuation of Myostatin/Activin signalling inhibited testis development. Future use of molecules based on a similar mode of action to promote muscle growth should be carefully profiled for adverse side-effects on the testis. However the effectiveness of sActRIIB as a modulator of Activin function provides a possible therapeutic strategy to alleviate testicular seminoma development.

Nine ecosystem process models were used to predict CO2 and water vapor exchanges by a 150-year-old black spruce forest in central Canada during 1994–1996 to evaluate and improve the models. Three models had hourly time steps, five had daily time steps, and one had monthly time steps. Model input included site ecosystem characteristics and meteorology. Model predictions were compared to eddy covariance (EC) measurements of whole-ecosystem CO2 exchange and evapotranspiration, to chamber measurements of nighttime moss-surface CO2 release, and to ground-based estimates of annual gross primary production, net primary production, net ecosystem production (NEP), plant respiration, and decomposition. Model-model differences were apparent for all variables. Model-measurement agreement was good in some cases but poor in others. Modeled annual NEP ranged from −11 g C m−2 (weak CO2 source) to 85 g C m−2 (moderate CO2 sink). The models generally predicted greater annual CO2 sink activity than measured by EC, a discrepancy consistent with the fact that model parameterizations represented the more productive fraction of the EC tower “footprint.” At hourly to monthly timescales, predictions bracketed EC measurements so median predictions were similar to measurements, but there were quantitatively important model-measurement discrepancies found for all models at subannual timescales. For these models and input data, hourly time steps (and greater complexity) compared to daily time steps tended to improve model-measurement agreement for daily scale CO2 exchange and evapotranspiration (as judged by root-mean-squared error). Model time step and complexity played only small roles in monthly to annual predictions.

In this article, we draw attention to the discourses and practices of multicultural and culturally relevant education as curricular contexts with long-lasting implications for newcomer youth. To best serve immigrant and refugee students and more explicitly include them in the field's discourse, we argue for a conceptual move to widen the scope of multicultural education and culturally relevant pedagogy. We highlight the tremendous contributions multicultural education approaches have made to equitable education, while also examining the ways in which some of their widespread theoretical framing have yet to address the particular needs of immigrant and refugee youth. We then suggest conceptual shifts to widen their scope to include newcomer youth's varied experiences and identity positions. These shifts are (a) advancing the role of genuine "cross-cultural relationships" over traditional forms of "cross-cultural competence" in multicultural educational spaces and (b) abdicating the search for "cultural authenticity" implied in some multicultural education practice in favor of facilitating "cultural agency" for newcomer youth.

Summary: Leaf day respiration (Rd) strongly influences carbon‐use efficiencies of whole plants and the global terrestrial biosphere. It has long been thought that Rd is slower than respiration in the dark at a given temperature, but measuring Rd by gas exchange remains a challenge because leaves in the light are also photosynthesizing. The Kok method and the Laisk method are widely used to estimate Rd. We highlight theoretical limitations of these popular methods, and recent progress toward their improvement by using additional information from chlorophyll fluorescence and by accounting for the photosynthetic reassimilation of respired CO2. The latest evidence for daytime CO2 and energy release from the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway in chloroplasts appears to be important to understanding Rd. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This work was aimed at proposing a supervised learning‐based method that directly synthesizes contrast‐weighted images from the Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (MRF) data without performing quantitative mapping and spin‐dynamics simulations. Methods: To implement our direct contrast synthesis (DCS) method, we deploy a conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) framework with a multi‐branch U‐Net as the generator and a multilayer CNN (PatchGAN) as the discriminator. We refer to our proposed approach as N‐DCSNet. The input MRF data are used to directly synthesize T1‐weighted, T2‐weighted, and fluid‐attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images through supervised training on paired MRF and target spin echo‐based contrast‐weighted scans. The performance of our proposed method is demonstrated on in vivo MRF scans from healthy volunteers. Quantitative metrics, including normalized root mean square error (nRMSE), peak signal‐to‐noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity (SSIM), learned perceptual image patch similarity (LPIPS), and Fréchet inception distance (FID), were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method and compare it with others. Results: In‐vivo experiments demonstrated excellent image quality with respect to that of simulation‐based contrast synthesis and previous DCS methods, both visually and according to quantitative metrics. We also demonstrate cases in which our trained model is able to mitigate the in‐flow and spiral off‐resonance artifacts typically seen in MRF reconstructions, and thus more faithfully represent conventional spin echo‐based contrast‐weighted images. Conclusion: We present N‐DCSNet to directly synthesize high‐fidelity multicontrast MR images from a single MRF acquisition. This method can significantly decrease examination time. By directly training a network to generate contrast‐weighted images, our method does not require any model‐based simulation and therefore can avoid reconstruction errors due to dictionary matching and contrast simulation (code available at:https://github.com/mikgroup/DCSNet).
