Carbon-based nanomaterials are key to developing high-performing electrochemical sensors with improved sensitivity and selectivity. Nonetheless, limitations in their fabrication and integration into devices often constrain their practical applications. Moreover, carbon nanomaterials-based electrochemical devices still face problems such as large background currents, poor stability, and slow kinetics. To advance towards a new class of carbon nanostructured electrochemical transducers, we propose the in-situ polymerization and carbonization of furfuryl alcohol (FA) on porous silicon (pSi) to produce a tailored and highly stable transducer. The thin layer of polyfurfuryl alcohol (PFA) that conformally coats the pSi scaffold transforms into nanoporous carbon when subjected to pyrolysis above 600 °C. The morphological and chemical properties of PFA-pSi were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Their stability and electrochemical performance were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in [Fe(CN)6]3-/4-, [Ru(NH3)6]2+/3+, and hydroquinone. PFA-pSi showed superior electrochemical performance compared to screen-printed carbon electrodes while also surpassing glassy carbon electrodes in specific aspects. Besides, PFA-pSi has the additional advantage of easy tuning of the electroactive surface area. To prove its potential for biosensing purposes, a DNA sensor based on quantifying the partial pore blockage of the pSi upon target hybridization was built on PFA-pSi. The sensor showed a limit of detection of 1.4 pM, outperforming other sensors based on the same sensing mechanism.

Viral and non-viral vectors have revolutionised in the last 5 years the approaches to tackling pandemics, cancers and genetic diseases. The intrinsic properties of these vectors present new separation challenges to their manufacture in terms of both the process-related impurities to be removed and the complex labile nature of the target products. These characteristics make them susceptible to heterogeneity and the formation of product-related impurities.Conventional polyethersulfone membrane filters used for sterile filtration and ultrafiltration of viral vectors and lipid nanoparticles can display limited selectivity and cause product losses. To address these challenges, novel membrane materials and fabrication techniques to overcome the boundary of selectivity-permeability performance have become of interest. Isoporous membranes with well-defined pore size and pore dispersity at the nano-scale show promising separation performance but have only been demonstrated at small scales to date.This review summarises the decision process for the development of new membrane candidates for vector manufacturing in genomic medicine, including membranes fabricated by lithography, track-etched membranes, anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) membranes and self-assembled block copolymer membranes. By comparing these membranes to existing commercially available products, the possible advantages presented by novel materials and fabrication approaches are identified.

Abstract This communication reports on a versatile and substrate‐agnostic method to tune the surface chemistry of conducting polymers with the aim of bridging the chemical mismatch between bioelectronic devices and biological systems. As a proof of concept, the surface of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is grafted with a short‐chain oligoethylene glycol monolayer to favor the formation of cell‐derived supported lipid bilayers (SLBs). This method is tuned to optimize the affinity between the supported lipid bilayer and the conducting polymer, leading to significant improvements in bilayer quality and therefore electronic readouts. To validate the impact of surface functionalization on the system's ability to transduce biological phenomena into quantifiable electronic signals, the activity of a virus commonly used as a surrogate for SARS‐CoV‐2 (mouse hepatitis virus) is monitored with and without surface treatment. The functionalized devices exhibit significant improvements in electronic output, stemming from the improved SLB quality, therefore strengthening the case for the use of such an approach in membrane‐on‐a‐chip systems.

Abstract Mesoporous silica is commonly used as matrix for humidity sensors which operate on the principle of relative humidity (RH)‐dependent water uptake and read‐out by resistance (R) monitoring. Although numerous studies have been dedicated to improving sensitivity with conductive additives, the role of the pore architecture on the sensing behavior has not been systematically investigated so far. Herein, the effects of pore size and porosity on resistive sensing performance in the 0.5–85% RH range are showcased. Across various sensors, a clear correlation is identified between mesopore size and linear RH sensing range.
