We investigate an optical structure that results from a linear combination of two periodic, multilayer dielectric functions of slightly different periodicities. By solving the corresponding Maxwell's equation, we show that such linearly combined optical structure supports a dense number of localized (slow) modes. For a practical implementation of the linear combination of the dielectric functions, we make use a silicon oxynitride (SiON) material platform where the refractive index of SiON can be tuned over a continuous range, by changing the percentage of oxygen. The proposed optical structure works, despite a system of low refractive index contrast, and can be effectively used to create efficient polychromatic slow light systems and devices. Understanding the nature of linkage disequilibrium (LD) between molecular markers reflects the degree of non-random association between their alleles, which is essential for genome-wide association studies. The main objective of this study was to assess the chromosome-wise linkage disequilibrium and haplotype block structure in indigenous cattle breeds of Tamil Nadu, India. A total of 79 animals belonging to five indigenous cattle breeds were considered as single indigenous cattle population and three samples per breed were sequenced using Illumina NovaSeqTM 6000 and Illumina HiSeq 2500. The LD parameter (r2) was estimated for a total of 62,095,778 pair- wise SNPs for all autosomes. The chromosome-wise number of SNP pairs, mean r2±standard deviation and median r2 values were 2,141,234, 0.484±0.246 and 0.493, respectively. Chromosome-wise mean r2 of different distance bins were calculated and it showed the maximum r2 value of 0.839 at 31-70 kb distance for Chromosome 11 and minimum r2 value of zero for Chromosome 7, 11, 15, 20 and 29, respectively at a distance 71-100 kb. This study also revealed a total of 413, 277 haplotype blocks which covered 2.34% of the autosomal genome. There was a total of 1,589,118 SNPs distributed within the haplotype blocks, covering a total length of 53.62 mb. The results of the study suggest the need for breed-specific reference populations for indigenous cattle breeds, which have a greater density of molecular markers of economic significance and thereby to identify breed-specific haplotypes in future.

This article applies deep learning-accelerated inverse design algorithms and discovers a spectrum of photonic power dividers with exceptional performance metrics despite the simplicity in the design geometry. The deep learning models exhibit high precisions on the order of 10−6 to 10−8 for both TE and TM polarizations of light. These models enable ultrafast search for an empirically describable subspace that simultaneously satisfy compact footprints, ultralow losses, ultrawide bandwidth, and exceptional robustness against fabrication randomness. We demonstrate a spectrum of devices for silicon photonics with programmable power splitting ratios, excess losses as small as 0.14 dB, to the best of our knowledge, the smallest footprints on the scale of sub-λ 2, and low loss bandwidths covering the whole telecommunication spectrum of O, S, E, C, L and U-bands. The robustness of the devices is statistically checked against the fabrication randomness and are numerically verified using the full three-dimensional finite difference time domain calculation.

Abstract: We study the superbending effect in a two-dimensional graded photonic crystal (GPC) for both TE and TM modes. We show that the lateral beam shift is extremely sensitive to the wavelength for the TM mode but not TE mode, indicating the potential in designing some special superbending devices, for example, TE/TM splitter and polarization-indifference waveguide at prescribed wavelengths. Integration of single-photon emitters (SPEs) with resonant photonic structures is a promising approach for realizing compact and efficient single-photon sources for quantum communications, computing, and sensing. Efficient interaction between the SPE and the photonic cavity requires that the cavity's resonance matches the SPE's emission line. Here we demonstrate a new method for tuning silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) microring cavities via controlled deposition of the cladding layers. Guided by numerical simulations, we deposit silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) nanolayers onto Si 3 N 4 ridge structures in steps of 50 nm. We show tuning of the cavity resonance exceeding a free spectral range (FSR) of 3.5 nm without degradation of the quality-factor (Q-factor) of the cavity. We then complement this method with localized laser heating for fine-tuning of the cavity. Finally, we verify that the cladding deposition does not alter the position and spectral properties of nanoparticles placed on the cavity, which suggests that our method can be useful for integrating SPEs with photonic structures., (© 2022. Light emission from the color centers in diamonds can be significantly enhanced by their interaction with optical microcavities. In the conventional chip-based hybrid approach, nanodiamonds are placed directly on the surface of microcavity chips created using fabrication-matured material platforms. However, the achievable enhancement due to the Purcell effect is limited because of the evanescent interaction between the electrical field of the cavity and the nanodiamond. Here, we propose and statistically analyze a diamond in a nanopocket structure as a new route to achieve a high enhancement of light emission from the color center in the nanodiamond, placed in an optical microcavity. We demonstrate that by creating a nanopocket within the photonic crystal L3 cavity and placing the nanodiamond in, a significant and a robust control over the local density of states can be obtained. The antinodes of the electric field relocate to the nanosized air gaps within the nanopocket, between the nanodiamond and the microcavity. This creates an elevated and uniform electric field across the nanodiamond that is less sensitive to perturbations in the shape and orientation of the nanodiamond. Using a silicon nitride photonic crystal L3 cavity and aiming at silicon-vacancy and nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond, we performed a statistical analysis of light emission, assuming random positions of color centers and dipole moment orientations. We showed that in cavities with experimentally feasible quality factors, the diamond in the nanopocket structure produces Purcell factor distributions with mean and median that are tenfold larger compared to what can be achieved when the diamond is on the surface of the microcavity., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

When we combine two periodic dielectric functions of slightly different spatial frequencies, we have spatial dielectric beats, which are periodic supercells in the longer spatial scale. This paper investigates these dielectric beats by solving the one-dimensional Maxwell's equation using a slowly varying envelope approximation. We show that the Maxwell's equation reduces to a three-term recurrence relation, leading to a tridiagonal eigenvalue problem with a dense number of eigenmodes with ultrasmall dispersions. These eigenmodes have vanishing group velocities and exist despite an optical structure with a low refractive index contrast. Optical dielectric beats have enormous potential for use in nonlinear optical and slow light applications.

We derive macroscopic equations of motion for the slowly varying electric field amplitude in three-dimensional active nonlinear optical nanostructures. We show that the microscopic Maxwell equations and polarization dynamics can be simplified to a macroscopic one-dimensional problem in the direction of group velocity. For a three-level active material, we derive the steady-state equations for normal mode frequency, threshold pumping, nonlinear Bloch mode amplitude, and lasing in photonic crystals. Our analytical results accurately recapture the results of exact numerical methods.

For the first time, the quasiperiodic Bragg fibers with geometrically distributed multilayered cladding are proposed and analyzed. We demonstrate that hollow-core Bragg fibers with quasiperiodic dielectric multilayer cladding can achieve low loss transmission over a broadband wavelength range of more than an octave (from 0.81 μm to 1.7 μm). We demonstrate that a series of one-dimensional photonic crystals made of any dielectric materials, with the periods are distributed in a geometrical progression of a common ratio, r < rc (theta,P), where rc is a structural parameter that depends on the angle of incidence, theta, and polarization, P, is capable of blocking light of any spectral range. If an omni-directional reflection is desired for all polarizations and for all incident angles smaller than thetao, then r < rc (theta(o),p), where p is the polarization with the electric field parallel to the plane of incidence. We present simple and formula like expressions for rc, width of the bandgap, and minimum number of photonic crystals to achieve a perfect light reflection.

We investigate diffraction of a white beam in a two-dimensional photonic crystal. Experimental and computational results for a halogen light source are presented. Applying equal-frequency surface analysis, we reproduce the experimental results by computer simulations. The white beam is modeled computationally as a sum of many circular rings; each ring is made up of many wavelength components. We also present computer simulations of the diffraction pattern for a fluorescent light source.

Batch experiments were conducted to determine the effect of temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration on the rates of growth and substrate (benzene and toluene) degradation by the toluene degrading strain, Pseudomonas putida F1. Over a range of temperature from 15 to 35 degrees C the maximum specific growth rate followed the Topiwala-Sinclair relationship when either benzene or toluene served as the sole carbon and energy source. Oxygen limited growth followed Monod saturation kinetics with the specific growth rate given as a function of the dissolved oxygen concentration. The oxygen half-saturation coefficient was found to be approximately 1 mg/l regardless of whether benzene or toluene was the substrate. Similar experiments with Burkholderia (Ralstonia) pickettii PKO1 for grown on toluene revealed an oxygen half-saturation coefficient of 0.7 mg/l.

We present an evaluation of the qualitative and quantitative effects that high concentrations of benzene and toluene have on the growth rate of several pure cultures that use these compounds as their sole carbon and energy source. The cultures employed were five widely studied environmental isolates: Pseudomonas putida F1, P. putida mt2, P. mendocina KR, Ralstonia pickettii PKO1, and Burkholderia cepacia G4. Three cultures degraded toluene following a pattern consistent with the kinetic model of Wayman and Tseng (1976) while the other two followed a modification of this model introduced by Alagappan and Cowan (2001). The pattern followed for benzene degradation was different than that for toluene degradation for all four capable pure cultures and consistent with that described by the model of Luong (1987). Mechanisms of substrate inhibition and solvent toxicity are discussed, used to conceptually evaluate the reasons for the differences in inhibition behavior, and used to support a call for more widespread use of the empirical, terminal substrate concentration inhibition models employed here. We also present the methodology developed to overcome a limitation commonly encountered when attempting to collect oxygen uptake data for use in quantifying substrate inhibition kinetics. The experimental method was effective for use in the collection of high quality data and the substrate inhibition models most useful in representing the growth of bacteria on these solvents are those that show a complete loss of activity at high concentration rather than the more popular asymptotic inhibition models., (Copyright 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

This paper reintroduces the Wayman and Tseng model for representing substrate inhibition effects on specific growth rate by further documenting its potential predictive capabilities. It also introduces a modification to this model in which an Andrews inhibition function is used in place of the Monod noninhibitory substrate function. This modification better represents the relationship between specific growth rate and substrate concentration for those substrates that show Andrews type inhibition at lower substrate concentrations, rather than the Monod type noninhibitory behavior described in the model of Wayman and Tseng. Results from nonlinear, least squares regression analysis are used to evaluate the ability of these models to empirically represent experimental data (both new and from the literature). The statistical goodness of fit is evaluated by comparing the regression results against those obtained using other empirical models. Finally, possible mechanisms of toxicity responsible for the observed inhibition trends are used to further justify use of these empirical models. The dominant mechanism considered to be relevant for conceptually explaining complete inhibition at high concentrations of solvents is the deterioration of cell membrane integrity. Literature citations are used to support this argument.
