Abstract Differences in clinical manifestations and biological underpinnings between Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) onset during adolescence and adulthood have been posited in previous studies, implying an influential role of age of onset (AOO) in the clinical subtyping and therapeutic approaches to MDD. However, direct comparisons between the two cohorts and their age-matched controls have been lacking in extant investigations. In this investigation, 156 volunteers participated, comprising 46 adolescents with MDD (adolescent-onset group), 35 adults with MDD (adult-onset group), 19 healthy adolescents, and 56 healthy adults. Resting-state functional MRI scans were undergone by all participants. Large-scale network analyses were applied. Subsequently, a 2 × 2 ANOVA was employed to analyze the main effects of diagnosis, age, and their interaction effect on functional connectivity (FC). Furthermore, regression analysis was employed to scrutinize the association between anomalous FC and HAMD sub-scores. Increased FC in visual network (VN), limbic network (LN), VN-dorsal attention network (DAN), VN-LN, and LN-Default Mode (DMN) was found in both adolescent-onset and adult-onset MDD; however, the increased FC in DAN and LN were only found in adult-onset MDD and the decreased FC in DAN was only found in adolescent-onset MDD. Additionally, the relationship between HAMD factor 1 anxiety somatization and altered FC of DAN, VN, and VN-DAN was moderated by AOO. In conclusion, shared and distinctive large-scale network alterations in adolescent-onset and adult-onset MDD patients were suggested by our findings, providing valuable contributions towards refining clinical subtyping and treatment approaches for MDD.

Abstract Background Lumbar vertebral endplates lesions (LEPLs), one of the etiologies of low back pain (LBP), are one of the most prevalent causes of health-care costs. Despite progressively becoming the focus in recent years, almost all studies have concentrated on symptomatic patients rather than general populations. As a result, our study was designed to determine the prevalence and distribution patterns of LEPLs in a middle-young general population, as well as their associations with lumbar disc herniation (LDH), lumbar disc degeneration (LDD), and lumbar vertebral volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD). Methods Seven hundred fifty-four participants aged 20–60 years were recruited from the subjects enrolled in a 10-year longitudinal study of degeneration of the spine and knee being conducted at the Beijing Jishuitan Hospital and 4 of them were excluded due to the missing of MRIs. In this observational study, a lumbar quantitative computed tomography (QCT) and MRI scan were performed among participants within 48 h. T2-weighted sagittal lumbar MRI images for all included subjects were identified for LEPLs by two independent observers based on morphological and local characteristics. Background and Purpose: Muscle weakness and bone fragility are both associated with hip fracture. In general, muscle contractions create forces to the bone, and bone strength adapts to mechanical loading through changes in bone architecture and mass. However, the relationship between impairment of muscle and bone function remain unclear. In particular, the associations of muscle with properties of proximal femur cortical and trabecular bone are still not well understood. The aim of this study was to explore the associations of hip/thigh muscle density (CT attenuation value in Hounsfield units) and size with cortical and trabecular bone mineral density (BMD) of the proximal femur.Materials and Methods: Three-dimensional quantitative computed tomography (QCT) imaging of the lumber, hip and mid-thigh was performed in a total of 301 participants (mean age 68.4 ± 6.1 years, 194 women and 107 men) to derive areal BMD (aBMD) and volumetric BMD (vBMD). Handgrip strength (HGS) and the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test were also performed. From the CT images, cross-sectional area (CSA), and density were determined for the gluteus maximus muscle (G.MaxM), trunk muscle at the vertebrae L2 level, and mid-thigh muscle. Multivariate generalized linear models were applied to assess associations.Results: Total hip (TH) aBMD was associated significantly with G.MaxM CSA (men: P = 0.042; women: P < 0.001) and density (men: P = 0.012; women: P = 0.043). In women, 0.035 cm2 of mid-thigh CSA (95% CI, 0.014–0.057; P = 0.002) increased per SD increase in TH aBMD, but this significance was not observed in men (P = 0.095). Trunk muscle density and CSA were not associated with proximal femur BMD. The associations of hip/thigh muscle parameters with femoral neck BMD were weaker than those with trochanter and intertrochanter BMD. Furthermore, compared to muscle density, muscle CSA showed better associations with vBMD. G.MaxM CSA was associated with trochanter (TR) Cort. vBMD in men (β, 19.898; 95% CI, 0.924–38.871; P = 0.040) and in women (β, 15.426; 95% CI, 0.893–29.958; P = 0.038). Handgrip strength was only associated with TR aBMD (β, 0.038; 95% CI, 0.006–0.070; P = 0.019) and intertrochanter aBMD (β, 0.049; 95% CI, 0.009–0.090; P = 0.016) in men.Conclusions: We observed positive associations of the gluteus and thigh muscle size with proximal femur volumetric BMD. Specifically, the gluteus maximus muscle CSA was associated with trochanter cortical vBMD in both men and women.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of T2 high signal intensity (T2-HSI) and decreased anteroposterior diameter (APD), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) in evaluating postoperative cervical cord function. Methods: The study included 57 postoperative cervical spondylotic myelopathy patients. Clinical evaluation and functional recovery assessments were performed using the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) score and recovery rate. The presence of T2-HSI and decreased APD was recorded for exploring the relevance. Spearman correlation was applied to investigate the relationships between DTI and NODDI metrics and mJOA score. Multiple comparisons of T2 signal intensity, APD and diffusion metrics were evaluated by using multiple linear regression. Results: Only the recovery rate was significantly different between T2-HSI and non-T2-HSI (nT2-HSI) patients (χ2 = 4.466, p = 0.045). Significant differences were not observed between cervical cords with and without decreased APD. Diffusion metrics, including fractional anisotropy (p = 0.0005), mean diffusivity (p = 0.0008), radial diffusivity (p = 0.0003) and intracellular volume fraction (p = 0.001), were significantly correlated with mJOA score. The ability of T2 signal intensity (p = 0.421) and APD (p = 0.420) to evaluate the postoperative function was inferior to that of fractional anisotropy (p = 0.002), mean diffusivity (p = 0.001), radial diffusivity (p = 0.001) and intracellular volume fraction (p = 0.004). Conclusion: Conventional magnetic resonance imaging signs could be considered as a reference to make an approximate assessment, whereas DTI and NODDI could be better quantitative tools for evaluating the postoperative function and may help in interpreting residual symptoms. The translational potential of this article: DTI and NODDI could provide reliable postoperative evaluation and analysis for cervical spondylotic myelopathy patients. BackgroundType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is widely acknowledged as a vital warning sign contributing to cognitive dysfunction. However, there is still a lack of consensus on whether hypoglycemic events resulting from poor glycemic control increase the risk of cognitive dysfunction in people with diabetes, and the potential dose–response correlation between hypoglycemic events and cognitive dysfunction remains unexplored. The primary objective of the current study was to assess the contribution of hypoglycemic events to cognitive dysfunction in T2DM patients and the dose–response correlation between the two.MethodsA comprehensive search of nine major databases was executed from inception to May 2023. We screened all observational studies examining the connection between hypoglycemia and cognitive dysfunction. The DerSimonian-Laird method was used to compute the combined risk ratio (RR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI). Additionally, dose–response analysis was employed to investigate the correlation between the frequency of hypoglycemia and the likelihood of cognitive dysfunction.ResultsA total of 30 studies of different levels in 17 articles with 3,961,352 participants were included in this review. The pooled RR for the connection of hypoglycemia and the likelihood of cognitive dysfunction was 1.47 (95% CI: 1.35–1.60). Subgroup analyses showed that the pooled RR for the likelihood of cognitive dysfunction was 1.20 (95% CI: 1.11–1.31) for one episode of hypoglycemia, 1.41 (95% CI: 1.05–1.88) for two episodes of hypoglycemia, and 1.62 (95% CI: 1.20–2.91) for three or more episodes of hypoglycemia. Band selection (BS) is an effective dimensionality reduction technique for hyperspectral images. Although many relevant methods have been proposed, they often only focus on the bandwise information and the correlation between the bands, and few of them pay attention to the manifold preservation in low-dimensional space, which may lead to the intrinsic structure of the data being damaged. In this article, we propose a novel method called sparse principal component analysis and adaptive multigraph learning (SPCA-AMGL) to address this issue. First, it applies SPCA to the BS task to learn the projection weight matrix, which utilizes the orthogonal constraint to remove redundant bands and uses the $ {L}_{\text{2,1}}$ norm to impose a sparse regularization on the weight matrix to ensure the selection of effective bands. Then, to select the bands with manifold preserving capability, AMGL is proposed to capture the local neighbor structure of data by combining the benefit of multiple graphs, which can not only adaptively learn the graph structure but also obtain the analytical solution of the multigraph coefficients. Finally, an alternate iterative algorithm is designed to optimize the proposed method. Abundant experiments on three hyperspectral datasets prove the reliability and superiority of the proposed method.

Liver cancer is one of frequent causes of death from malignancy in the world. Owing to the outstanding advantages of computer-aided diagnosis and deep learning, fully automatic segmentation of computed tomography (CT) images turned into a research hotspot over the years. The liver has quite low contrast with the surrounding tissues, together with its lesion areas are thoroughly complex. To deal with these problems, we proposed effective methods for enhancing features and processed public datasets from Liver Tumor Segmentation Challenge (LITS) for the verification. In this experiment, data pre-processing based on the image enhancement and noise reduction. This study redesigned the original UNet with two novel modules and named it DResUNet which was applied deformable convolution. The first module aimed to recalibrate information by the channel and spatial dimension. The other module enriched deep information of these liver CT images through fusing multi-scale features. Besides, we used cross-entropy loss function for adaptive weights to solve the troubles of class imbalance in the dataset samples. These can improve the performance of the network in-depth and breadth feature learning to deal with many complex segmentation scenes in abdominal CT images. More importantly, the effect of predicted images fully proved that our methods are highly competitive among the segmentation of liver and liver tumors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unsupervised band selection is fundamental to alleviate the curse of dimensionality for hyperspectral imagery. Although many research works have been developed, it is still a challenging problem to improve the poor classification performance with a small set of selected bands due to the lack of discriminative information that simultaneously distinguishes multiple classes. Moreover, traditional methods utilize the predefined graph representation for different hyperspectral image (HSI) datasets that may result in degraded generalization performance. To address this issue, this article proposes an unsupervised band selection method via global affinity matrix reconstruction for HSI classification, referred to as GAMR briefly. To explore the discriminative information from HSIs, GAMR formulate a convex optimization problem to iteratively refine the randomly generated pseudolabels. Meanwhile, the similarity between band pairs is estimated by adaptively reconstructing a global affinity matrix from several local graph representations. To solve the proposed formulation, an alternating optimization algorithm is designed to search for the optimal solution. Experimental results on three HSI datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the superiority over seven state-of-the-art methods.

IntroductionKnee osteoarthritis is a common disease in the elderly. Patients suffer from long-term chronic pain and reduced life quality. Acupuncture has been proven to be an effective treatment for KOA. However, the neural mechanism of acupuncture is unclear, so far. Periaqueductal gray (PAG) and raphe nuclei (RPN) are essential structures associated with chronic pain in human brains. This study aims to investigate functional connectivity (FC) changes of PAG and RPN in KOA to interpret the neural mechanism of acupuncture.MethodsIn 15 patients with KOA and 15 healthy controls (HC), we acquired Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores and resting-state fMRI images of each participant before and after acupuncture stimulation on EX-LE5 acupoint. Then, PAG and RPN were selected as seeds to perform FC analysis based on resting-state fMRI images. Objective. This study evaluated the impact of a novel venipuncture method on vascular parameters of vena basilica to provide a new technical option for the clinical management of difficult venipuncture. Methods. 32 volunteers examined by ultrasound at the Medical Imaging Center of The First People’s Hospital of Nantong, Jiangsu province, from February 2020 to April 2020 were randomly selected. One hand of each patient was ligated with the traditional single tourniquet and the new ligation method for 20 seconds. Then, the distance between the left or right vena basilica and the skin and the diameter of blood vessels were measured by ultrasound. 98 patients with peripheral venipuncture difficulty who were examined by ultrasound of a third-grade hospital from April 2019 to March 2020 were selected and randomly divided into control group (n=49) and experimental group (n=49). The traditional method was used in the control group, and the new peripheral venipuncture was used in the experimental group. The success rate of single puncture, preparation time before puncture, time required for puncture operation, pain reaction during puncture, intravascular congestion after puncture, subcutaneous tissue injury, and vascular reuse rate after puncture were compared between the two methods. Results. The new ligation and puncture method increased the diameter of peripheral superficial vein vessels by 0.51±0.04 mm, and the change of vena basilica diameter was not significantly associated with gender and age of patient. The success rate of single puncture and the vascular reuse rate were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group, while the preparation time and venipuncture time, as well as the patient’s pain response, were significantly lower in the experimental group compared to the control group, and the intravascular congestion and subcutaneous tissue injury were lower. In addition, the mean satisfaction score of patients in the experimental group was higher than that of the control group. Conclusion. The new ligation and puncture method was an effective vena basilica dilation technique for filling the peripheral superficial veins, improving puncture success rate of peripheral difficult vein, and reducing patient pain, which was worth popularizing and applying in clinic.

Unsupervised band selection has gained increasing attention recently since massive unlabeled high-dimensional data often need to be processed in the domains of machine learning and data mining. This paper presents a novel unsupervised HSI band selection method via band grouping and adaptive multi-graph constraint. A band grouping strategy that assigns each group different weights to construct a global similarity matrix is applied to address the problem of overlooking strong correlations among adjacent bands. Different from previous studies that are limited to fixed graph constraints, we adjust the weight of the local similarity matrix dynamically to construct a global similarity matrix. By partitioning the HSI cube into several groups, the model is built with a combination of significance ranking and band selection. After establishing the model, we addressed the optimization problem by an iterative algorithm, which updates the global similarity matrix, its corresponding reconstruction weights matrix, the projection, and the pseudo-label matrix to ameliorate each of them synergistically. Extensive experimental results indicate our method outperforms the other five state-of-the-art band selection methods in the publicly available datasets.

Several studies have demonstrated through resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) that functional connectivity changes are important in the recovery from Bell’s palsy (BP); however, these studies have only focused on the cortico-cortical connectivity. It is unclear how corticostriatal connectivity relates to the recovery process of patients with BP. In the present study, we evaluated the relationship between longitudinal changes of caudate-based functional connectivity and longitudinal changes of facial performance in patients with intractable BP. Twenty-one patients with intractable BP underwent resting-state fMRI as well as facial behavioral assessments prior to treatment (PT) and at the middle stage of treatment (MT); and 21 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) were recruited and received the same protocol. The caudate was divided into dorsal and ventral sub-regions and separate functional connectivity was calculated. Compared with HC, patients with intractable BP at the PT stage showed decreased functional connectivity of both the dorsal and ventral caudate mainly distributed in the somatosensory network, including the bilateral precentral gyrus (MI), left postcentral gyrus, media frontal gyrus, and superior temporal gyrus (STG). Alternatively, patients in the MT stage showed decreased functional connectivity primarily distributed in the executive network and somatosensory network, including the bilateral cingulate cortex (CC), left anterior cingulate cortex (LACC), inferior prefrontal gyrus (IFG), MI, STG, and paracentral lobe. The longitudinal changes in functional connectivity of both the dorsal and ventral caudate were mainly observed in the executive network, including the right ACC, left CC, and IFG. Functional connectivity changes in the right ACC and left IFG were significantly correlated with changes in facial behavioral performance. These findings indicated that corticostriatal connectivity changes are associated with recovery from BP.

Objective. To explore cortical reorganization of patients recovered from Bell’s palsy (BP) by task-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during finger and orofacial movements and provide more evidence for acupuncture clinical treatment of BP. Methods. We collected 17 BP patients with complete clinical recovery (BP group) and 20 healthy volunteers (control group) accepted the task-state fMRI scans with lip pursing movements and finger movements, respectively. Results. It was found that there were significant differences of brain functional status between the two groups. Conclusions. The results showed that there was cortical reorganization in the brain of patients recovered from BP after acupuncture treatment, which also suggested the relationship between the hand motor areas and facial motor areas of BP patients.
