The impact of soil fertilization with animal manure on the spread and persistence of antibiotic resistance in the environment is far from being fully understood. To add knowledge about persistence and correlations between antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in fertilized soil, a longitudinal soil mesocosm study was conducted. Soil samples were collected from the mesocosms immediately before spreading and then afterward at fifteen time points during a 320-day observation period. Eight ARGs (ermB, sul1, tetA, tetG, tetM, cfr, fexA, and optrA) and the class 1 integron-integrase gene, intI1, were determined in both pig slurry and soil, as well as residues of 36 antibiotics. Soil chemical and biochemical parameters were also measured. Twelve antibiotics were detected in the slurry in the range of 3 µg kg−1–3605 µg kg−1, with doxycycline, lincomycin, and tiamulin being the most abundant, whereas ermB, sul1, and tetM were the predominant ARGs. Before spreading, neither antibiotic residues nor ARGs were detectable in the soil; afterwards, their concentrations mirrored those in the slurry, with a gradual decline over the duration of the experiment. The BEST (Beerkan Estimation of Soil Transfer parameters) method was used to compare the hydraulic properties of the soils in two Long-term Agroecosystem Experiments (LTAEs) located at the FIELDLAB experimental site of the University of Perugia (central Italy). The LTAE "NewSmoca" consists of a biennial maize-durum wheat crop rotation under integrated low-input cropping systems with (i) inversion soil tillage (INT) or (ii) no-tillage (INT+) and (iii) under an organic cropping system with inversion soil tillage (ORG). ORG and INT+ involve the use of autumn-sown cover crops (before the maize cycle). Pure stand durum wheat was grown in INT and INT+, while a faba bean–wheat temporary intercropping was implemented in ORG. The LTAE "Crop Rotation" consists of different crop rotations and residue management, a continuous soft winter wheat and biennial rotations of soft winter wheat with maize or faba bean. Each rotation is combined with two modes of crop residue management: removal or burial. For INT+, despite the high-bulk density (>1.50 g/cm3), we found that conductivity, sorptivity and available water are comparable to those of INT, probably due to a more structured and efficient micropore system. ORG soils show the highest conductivity, sorptivity and available water content values, probably due to the recent spring tillage occurring in the wheat inter-row with the faba bean incorporation into the soil. For LTAE Rotation, the residue burial seems to influence the capacity-based indicators positively. Drylands represent about one-third of the global land and mainly occur in Africa and Asia. Because of the arid conditions, dryland soils are characterized by salt accumulation. Although salt-affected soils are unsuitable for agriculture, some arid lands have been cultivated for a long time. However, especially in the last decades, because of the increasingly warmer climatic conditions and human migration toward favorable environments, a progressive abandonment and degradation of drylands has occurred. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the effects of cultivation on saline soils to develop appropriate soil management techniques to ensure their fertility. This work aims to evaluate the evolution of salinization from currently cultivated soils to soils that have been abandoned for different lengths of time in arid areas of central Tunisia. Morphological and physicochemical properties of the studied soils indicated that the cultivation, through irrigation and the presence of soil cover, reduced salt accumulation in the upper soil horizons. Salt leaching towards deeper horizons and depressed evaporation, which reduced capillary rising, maintained electrical conductivity within tolerable values for most crops. Conversely, the abandonment of previously cultivated fields compromised soil fertility, threatening soil conservation and stabilization of agricultural production in the medium to long term. Climate warming is predicted to raise the mean global temperature by 1 °C in the next 50 years, and this change is believed to be capable of affecting soil organic matter cycling and nutrient availability. With the aim of increasing knowledge on the response of forest soils to the ongoing climate change, we used altitude as a proxy for temperature change and studied chemical and biochemical properties of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forest soils at two altitudes (800 and 1000 m) from central Apennines (Italy). Results showed that 1 °C of mean annual air temperature difference between the sites at the two altitudes had greater effect on the mineral horizons than on the organic horizons. At higher altitude, mineral soil had limited development, higher pH, and higher organic matter content due to the lower efficiency of the microbial community. Enzymatic activities of the organic horizons were generally not affected by altitude. Conversely, we observed a higher activity of xylosidase, β-glucosidase, alkaline phosphomonoesterase, arylsulfatase, and leucine-aminopeptidase in the sub-superficial horizons (Bw1 and Bw2) of the soils at 1000 m. We hypothesized that, as a response to environmental and climatic constraints occurring at higher altitude, plant roots increase the production of enzymes directly and/or indirectly by triggering the microbial community through exudation. Physical and chemical soil properties are generally correlated with the parent material, as its composition may influence the pedogenetic processes, the content of nutrients, and the element biocycling. This research studied the chemical and biochemical properties of the A horizon from soils developed on different rocks like amphibolite, serpentinite, phyllite, and granite under a relatively similar climatic regime from Galicia (northwest Spain). In particular, the effect of the parent material on soil evolution, organic carbon sequestration, and the hormone-like activity of humic and fulvic acids were tested. Results indicated that all the soils were scarcely fertile because of low concentrations of available P, exchangeable Ca (except for the soils on serpentinite and phyllite), and exchangeable K, but sequestered relevant quantities of organic carbon. The scarce soil fertility was common to all soils independently of the parent material, and we attributed this similarity to the pedogenetic pressure induced by the climatic conditions. Also, the hormone-like activity of humic and fulvic acids, similar for all the soils, was probably due to pedogenesis. We hypothesized that the hormone-like activity of the humic substances helps growth and diffusion of vegetation in low fertile soils and, consequently, soil organic carbon sequestration too. The soil amendment with organic wastes represents a way to increase the soil fertility and the organic carbon (C) stored in the agro-ecosystems. Among the organic waste materials produced by agricultural and industrial activities, olive mill wastes derived from the olive oil extraction process may represent a suitable soil amendment. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of fresh (SOMW) or composted mixture of SOMW and shredded olive tree prunings (C-SOMW+P) on the vegetative and productive activities of olive trees, on the C stored in the tree non-permanent structures (prunings and fruits) and in the soil. The plots treated with SOMW or C-SOMW+P showed higher vegetative and productive activities than the untreated plots, and this was attributed to the higher total N and availability of P and K supplied by the amendments. Consequently, treatments increased the C sequestered in the tree non-permanent structures than in the control trees. However, no significant different effect between SOMW and C-SOMW+P treatments was found for the C stored in prunings and fruits, whereas it was evident a stronger influence of C-SOMW+P than SOMW on soil C sequestration. Indeed, about 50% the C supplied by the treatment with C-SOMW+P was sequestered in the olive grove system, with more than 90% of the sequestered C stored into the soil. The low amount of C sequestered in the soil following the addition of SOMW was attributed to its richness of moisture and easily degradable compounds that triggered the mineralization processes controlled by the soil microbial community. Although the 8 years of amendment produced a higher fruit yields than the control, no difference occurred between the characteristics and the oil content of the olive fruits. Only the total phenol content for the oil obtained from the SOMW-treated plots was significantly higher. The other considered fruit characteristics did not show significant differences. In alpine environments, colonies of snow vole ( Chionomys nivalis Martins) cause strong pedoturbation, which may affect humification process and soil organic matter ( SOM) cycling, with repercussions on the hormone-like activity of organics. We investigated the effect of snow vole pedoturbation on the chemical and spectroscopic features of soil organic fractions, and the potential hormone-like activity of humic and fulvic acids ( HA, FA). The study site was located on the high-mountain environment of the Majella massif (central Italy). Pedoturbated and regular soils were morphologically described and characterized for pH and content of total organic carbon, total extractable carbon, HA, and FA. Both HA and FA were extracted and investigated using attenuated total reflectance/Fourier transform infrared ( ATR/ FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance with high-resolution magic angle spinning ( HRMAS- NMR), and 1H-13C heteronuclear single quantum coherence ( HSQC). HA and FA were also tested for their auxin-like and gibberellin-like activities. Results provide evidences that bioturbated and regular soils contain a poorly decomposed SOM, but HA and FA with a well-defined molecular structure. The HA and FA from both bioturbated and regular soils show a hormone-like activity with a different allocation along the soil profile. In the regular soil, the highest auxin-like activity was shown by HA and FA from Oe1 horizon, while gibberellin-like activity was expressed by FA from Oe2 horizon. Burrowing activity determines a redistribution of organics throughout the profile with a relatively high auxin-like activity in the FA from straw tunnel wall ( STW) and gibberellin-like activity in the HA from vole feces ( VF). The relative high presence of carboxylic acids, amides, proteins, and amino acids in the FA from STW and the aromatic moieties in the HA from VF put evidences for their different behavior. The fact that snow vole activity has modified the chemical and biological properties of SOM in these soils otherwise considered governed only by low temperature has important ecological implications such as the preservation of soil fertility and vegetal biodiversity. A laboratory experiment was carried out to determine the organic carbon content and quality of different organic residues (urban and green compost, moist olive oil husks) and soils of different origin (forest and agricultural) to be used as biofilter in the biodepuration of pesticide contami-nated water. An adsorption/desorption experiment was also performed to assess the retention capacity of substrates tested against fungicide metalaxyl. The goal of the work was to determine the extent of the adsorption/desorption of the mobile fungicide metalaxyl in substrates containing different amounts and quality of organic carbon and to characterize the relationship between the carbon fractions and the adsorption/desorption parameters determined. The Kads values found in the organic substrates turned out to be higher than those reported for soils, indicating the highest sorption capability of these materials and their suitability to be used as bio-filters for decontaminating water. The quality of organic carbon strongly influenced the entity and the reversibility of bonds between substrates and fungicide. The influence of different organic fractions on the adsorption of metalaxyl can be summarized in the order of humic acids carbon > total humified extractable carbon > total organic carbon > total carbon, leading to the con-clusion that the presence of the humified fraction in the organic substrates is essential for a good performance of biofilters. Indeed, the desorption experiment evidenced that metalaxyl is less desorbed in the most humified substrates. Therefore, in bio-depuration systems such as biobed it is convenient to use mature substrates, which have to un-dergo a composting process, leading to high humus content and quality, responsible for irreversible bonds with pesticides. Abstract: Low-temperature ashing (LTA), which is able to remove the organic material from mineral grains or aggregates without any disturbance to their physical structure, was used to oxidize the organic matter present into soil aggregates and sandstone- and siltstone-derived rock fragments. The three fractions were characterized for their mineralogy and pores distribution, and treated with LTA apparatus for 24 and 96h. The losses of C and N were evaluated and the chemical modifications produced by LTA in the extractable organic matter and humin were investigated by chemical and spectroscopic methods. During the LTA treatment, the simplest organic molecules were lost, and the remaining material acquired a higher degree of oxidation, making this heterogeneous mix of fresh, partially and well-humified substances more homogeneous. In the aggregates and in the sandstone rock fragments, the composition of extractable material changed and was enriched in the aromatic component, due also to the contribution of fragments deriving from humin, as the oxidation produced compounds enriched in carboxyl groups and characterized by a higher solubility. This could mean the occurrence of a continuum between humin and extractable organic matter mediated by oxidation processes. In the siltstone rock fragments extractable organic matter and humin underwent lesser severe transformation than those in the sandstone rock fragments and aggregates; the mineralized C and N derived almost entirely from the extractable fraction, whereas humin appeared to be virtually indifferent to the LTA treatment. In fact, although the amount of C lost during the treatment was similar for the three fractions, the siltstone rock fragments lost only 11% of initial humin-C pool, against 30% of the aggregates and 60% of sandstone rock fragments. As the three fractions showed similar mineralogy, the obtained results indicated that the soil fraction richest in micropores exerts a better protection on the organic matter. We studied the distribution of the indigenous bacterial and fungal communities in a forest soil profile. The composition of bacterial and fungal communities was assessed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of total and extracellular DNA extracted from all the soil horizons. Microbial biomass C and basal respiration were also measured to assess changes in both microbial biomass and activity throughout the soil profile. The 16S rDNA-DGGE revealed composite banding patterns reflecting the high bacterial diversity as expected for a forest soil, whereas 18S rDNA-DGGE analysis showed a certain stability and a lower diversity in the fungal communities. The banding patterns of the different horizons reflected changes in the microbial community structure with increasing depth. In particular, the DGGE analysis evidenced complex banding patterns for the upper A1 and A2 horizons, and a less diverse microflora in the deeper horizons. The low diversity and the presence of specific microbial communities in the B horizons, and in particular in the deeper ones, can be attributed to the selective environment represented by this portion of the soil profile. The eubacterial profiles obtained from the extracellular DNA revealed the presence of some bands not present in the total DNA patterns. This could be interpreted as the remainders of bacteria not any more present in the soil because of changes of edaphic conditions and consequent shifting in the microbial composition. These characteristic bands, present in all the horizons with the exception of the A1, should support the concept that the extracellular DNA is able to persist within the soil. Soil-sample collection and strategy are costly and time-consuming endeavors, mainly when the goal is in-field variation mapping that usually requires dense sampling. This study developed and tested a streamlined soil mapping methodology, applicable at the field scale, based on an unsupervised classification of Sentinel-2 (S2) data supporting the definition of reduced soil-sampling schemes. The study occurred in two agricultural fields of 20 hectares each near Deruta, Umbria, Italy. S2 images were acquired for the two bare fields. After a band selection based on bibliography, PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and cluster analysis were used to identify points of two reduced-sample schemes. The data obtained by these samplings were used in linear regressions with principal components of the selected S2 bands to produce maps for clay and organic matter (OM). Resultant maps were assessed by analyzing residuals with a conventional soil sampling of 30 soil samples for each field to quantify their accuracy level. Although of limited extent and with a specific focus, the low average errors (Clay ± 2.71%, OM ± 0.16%) we obtained using only three soil samples suggest a wider potential for this methodology. The proposed approach, integrating S2 data and traditional soil-sampling methods could considerably reduce soil-sampling time and costs in ordinary and precision agriculture applications. Both altitude and vegetation are known to affect the amount and quality of soil organic matter (SOM) and the size and activity of soil microbial biomass. However, when altitude and vegetation changes are combined, it is still unclear which one has a greater effect on soil chemical and biochemical properties. With the aim of clarifying this, we tested the effect of altitude (and hence temperature) and vegetation (broadleaf vs pine forests) on soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil microbial biomass and its activity. Soil sampling was carried out in two adjacent toposequences ranging from 500 to 1000 m a.s.l. on a calcareous massif in central Italy: one covered only by Pinus nigra J.F. Arnold forests, while the other covered by Quercus pubescens Willd., Ostrya carpinifolia Scop. and Fagus sylvatica L. forests, at 500, 700 and 1000 m a.s.l., respectively. The content of SOC and water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) increased with altitude for the pine forests, while for the broadleaf forests no trend along the slope occurred, and the highest SOC and WEOC contents were observed in the soil at 700 m under the Ostrya carpinifolia forest. With regard to the soil microbial community, although the size of the soil microbial biomass (Cmic) generally followed the SOC contents along the slope, both broadleaf and pine forest soils showed similar diminishing trends with altitude of soil respiration (ΣCO2-C), and ΣCO2-C:WEOC and ΣCO2-C:Cmic ratios. The results pointed out that, although under the pine forests' altitude was effective in affecting WEOC and SOC contents, in the soils along the broadleaf forest toposequence this effect was absent, indicating a greater impact of vegetation than temperature on SOC amount and pool distribution. Simple Summary: Agroforestry is a practice, which consists of having orchard, crops and animals in the same land. This system shows many sustainability advantages like reductions of land use, permitting to obtain two productions (vegetal and animal) in the same area. Moreover, if the animals are well managed, they exert a double action by fertilizing and weeding the soil. The agroforestry system here studied consists of an organic vineyard where geese at two densities (High Geese Density-HGD and Low Geese Density-LGD) were reared. In the organic vineyard, only Copper (Cu) treatment is allowed, like antifungal. The aim was to investigate the chemical and biochemical properties of the soil with geese and the impact of Cu on the soil and animal tissues. The main results showed that the presence of animals improves the efficiency of the microbial biomass mainly in the upper soil horizons. Moreover, the grazing activity of geese removes Cu from the soil with the grass intake and showed a moderate accumulation in the liver. However, no significant difference was present in the edible tissues (breast and drumstick) of the vineyard geese in respect to the control ones. Agroforestry systems aim at increasing the productivity and the environmental sustainability of both crop and animal productions. The integration of small animals such as geese in the vineyard could represent an opportunity to improve farm income and reduce land use for grazing. The main objective of this work was to study the impact of geese rearing in an organic vineyard on the chemical and biochemical properties of the soil and the effect of Copper (Cu) supplied with the fungicide treatments. Furthermore, the amount of Cu in the animal tissues was also investigated. Three experimental areas within the vineyard were selected: High Geese Density (HGD-240 geese ha−1), Low Geese Density (LGD-120 geese ha−1) and Without Geese used as control soil (WG). The results indicated that both HGD and LGD did not affect the main chemical properties of the vineyard soils. LGD increased the amount and the efficiency of the microbial biomass in the upper soil horizons. Moreover, geese through the grazing activity reduced the Cu content in the vineyard soils, accumulating this element in their liver. Abstract Soil magnetic properties are sensitive indicators of pedogenetic processes. Although many of the processes that increase soil magnetism are well documented, the role of microbial communities and the metabolic characteristics of Fe-reducing bacteria are still largely unknown. For this work, two soils with contrasting magnetic properties were identified in a beech forest on Monte Zuccarello (central Italy). Samples of bulk soil and rhizosphere were obtained from A (0–7 cm), AB (7–16 cm), Bw1 (16–22 cm) and Bw2 (22–29 cm) horizons of both soils, and were analysed for their physicochemical characteristics, the amount of magnetic minerals, and the composition of total and culturable bacterial communities, focusing on siderophore-producing bacteria (SPB). Analyses confirmed that the magnetic soil (MS) have a higher content of maghemite and magnetite association, compared to non-magnetic soil (NMS). Since the formation of maghemite can occur through different processes, we investigated on the possible role of soil bacteria in the formation of this magnetic mineral. As soil maghemite generally contains small amounts of Fe2+, the formation of which has been attributed to the combustion of organic matter, SPB have been isolated and identified. MS samples showed the highest number of SPB (mainly Micrococcaceae , Bacillaceae , and Pseudomonadaceae), suggesting a significant increase in Fe-reducing bacteria. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed a separation in terms of the total composition of the bacterial community between bulk and rhizosphere of both MS and NMS, dominated by Proteobacteria , Actinobacteria , Acidobacteria , and Verrucomicrobia phyla. Interestingly, Gamma and Delta Proteobacteria , as well as Nitrospirae , were usually more abundant in MS than in NMS, confirming that the MS was predominantly characterized by groups of magnetotactic bacteria and SPB, and potentially contributing to enhance the soil magnetic properties. In this contribution, we examined a latitudinal soil transect from interior Alaska, focusing on morphological, physical and chemical characteristics of permafrost affected soils. The aim of this work was to evaluate if latitude (a proxy for temperature change) or other soil forming factors may affect organic layer thickness and, consequently, permafrost depth along the latitudinal gradient of 65° to 69°. Along this gradient, the plant community changed from boreal forest to moist tundra, but this change did not affect the amount of C stored in the organic horizons and the permafrost depth. Hence, we suspected that, at latitudes higher than the 65° degree, the formation of thick and thermally insulating organic layers is controlled mostly by the extent of the pedoturbations produced by the permafrost dynamics and the soil parent material. This study combined different approaches to characterize organic sediments produced by an anaerobic digestion plant feed with pig slurry, and accumulated for many years in a lagoon. The results of all analyses identified a certain homogeneity of the sediments. As a consequence of the pig diet, the sediment contained an high concentration of Zn (about 4 g kg −1 ) and Cu (about 1.2 g kg −1 ), which were mostly associated to the particles with a size ranging from 2 to 53 μm. The sediment was made of large amount of organic matter, mostly cellulose and recalcitrant molecules, and 30–40% mineral fraction. XANES and XES spectroscopies indicated the presence of zinc phosphate (38%), zinc sulfide (32%), zinc carbonate (19%), and zinc oxide (11%). The presence in the sediment of forms characterized by a very scarce solubility, as also confirmed by the Zn and Cu chemical speciation, indicated a low bioavailability of these metals. However, although their low mobility, the high concentrations of Zn and Cu allowed to consider the sediment not suitable to use as a fertiliser due to the potential risk of metal interaction with the food chain. The effects on bacterial, yeast and fungal communities present within an agricultural soil treated with a pig slurry-derived digestate were studied using a multidisciplinary (biochemical and 454 pyrosequencing platform) approach. Biochemical analyses showed a significant increase of CO2 emissions from soil 5 days after the amendment with digestate, whereas soil microbial biomass (C-biomass) increased significantly only after 12 and 30 days. PLFAs analysis revealed a significant increase in Gram-negative bacteria 90 days after the amendment. Results from 454 pyrosequencing revealed the presence of OTUs attributed to bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes exhibited a significant predominance in the first 5 days, whereas Ascomycota became predominant 90 days after the amendment. Overall, both bacterial and yeast + fungal richness exhibited a decreasing trend from 0 to 90 days after the amendment. Canonical analysis of principal coordinates showed that the cumulative effect of amendment and incubation time explained approximately 45% and 36% of the total variance observed in the bacterial and yeast + fungal communities, respectively. The correlation among some bacterial and fungal OTUs suggested the probable existence of specific biological interactions among different phyla. Soil ecosystem services depend on soil properties and their interactions, which are mostly influenced by soil use and management. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate, through a multidisciplinary approach, the effect of different cropping systems on food provisioning, soil chemical features, size and structure of soil microbial community, soil invertebrate biodiversity and habitat provision (trophic interactions). The systems were: conventional integrated (INT); traditional organic with cover crops and conventional tillage (ORG); and organic coupled with conservation agriculture (cover crop mulching and no-tillage, ORG+). During 2016, we conducted soil and field samplings and collected data relative to the crop yield, C and N content in the agroecosystem, chemical and microbial soil properties and soil invertebrate abundance and trophic interactions. The INT system showed the highest crop yield (similar to ORG and three-fold higher than ORG+). Nevertheless, the INT system showed the greatest amount of N lost with drainage water (six-fold higher than the other systems), the lowest soil total PLFA abundance (around two-fold lower than ORG and ORG+ in the Ap1 horizon of soil). Additionally, INT system was characterized by the lowest invertebrate biodiversity (e.g., two-fold and ten-fold lower than ORG and ORG+ respectively for ground-dwelling predator abundance). By contrast, the ORG+ system had the lowest crop yield, but it showed the highest soil total organic C concentration and microbial biomass in the Ap1 horizon, supported higher invertebrate biodiversity and a slightly wider prey-spectrum for ground beetle predators. The ORG system had an intermediate behaviour between INT and ORG+. The results of this study demonstrate that, despite the reduction of crop yield, the conversion from INT to ORG or ORG+ possibly enhances important soil functions like nutrient cycling and storage, biodiversity and habitat provisioning. • The effect over time of Se fertilization on some soil properties was evaluated. • Soil under corn cultivation was treated with Na-selenite at the rate of 50 and 100 g Se ha−1. • Se addition did not affect the amounts of soil organic C, total N and available P. • Better adaptation of the microbial community in the Se-enriched soil. • On a short-term, Na-selenite fertigation had no negative impact on soil quality. We tested the over time effect of different selenium doses [50 (D50) and 100 (D100) g ha−1 of Se as Na 2 SeO 3 on a soil under corn (Zea mays L.) cultivation. The soil was sampled 18 (t1), 48 (t2) and 59 (t3) days after the addition of Se and analysed for total Se, organic carbon and nitrogen, water-extractable organic carbon, available P, microbial biomass-C (C mic) contents, the cumulative basal respiration (ΣCO 2 -C) and some enzymatic activities. Our findings showed Se fertilization increased the total soil Se content, although the differences between the treated and the untreated soils disappeared over time. Se fertilization had a negligible effect on the selected soil chemical and biochemical properties, with the exception of the ΣCO 2 -C, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis and dehydrogenase activity. Indeed, these parameters showed lower values at t3 in the treated than in the untreated soils without significant decrease of the C mic suggesting a less energy demanded by the soil microorganisms for their own maintenance. This finding suggested a better adaptation of the microbial community to the modified conditions in the treated soils, where Se fertilization might have caused a shift in soil microbial community structure and/or promoted the survival of selected microorganisms. Overall, the obtained data highlighted that Se fertilization with Na-selenite, at the rate of 50 and 100 g ha−1, had no negative impact on soil chemical and biochemical parameters, at least on a short term. Agroforestry systems aim at increasing the productivity and the environmental sustainability of both crop and animal productions. The integration of small animals such as geese in the vineyard could represent an opportunity to improve farm income and reduce land use for grazing. The main objective of this work was to study the impact of geese rearing in an organic vineyard on the chemical and biochemical properties of the soil and the effect of Copper (Cu) supplied with the fungicide treatments. Furthermore, the amount of Cu in the animal tissues was also investigated. Three experimental areas within the vineyard were selected: High Geese Density (HGD-240 geese ha -1 ), Low Geese Density (LGD-120 geese ha -1 ) and Without Geese used as control soil (WG). The results indicated that both HGD and LGD did not affect the main chemical properties of the vineyard soils. LGD increased the amount and the efficiency of the microbial biomass in the upper soil horizons. Moreover, geese through the grazing activity reduced the Cu content in the vineyard soils, accumulating this element in their liver. However, the content of Cu in the breast and drumstick of vineyard geese did not show any significant difference in respect the meat of the control ones.
