Representations of « African women » are not neutral. They reveal a certain positioning regarding women in this part of the world. This article proposes to analyze the syntagm « African woman » and its variants, as a socio-discursive imaginary, in French politico-diplomatic discourse. Using the Discourse Analysis approach, we examine the knowledge of opinion that continues to affect the image of women on the African continent. Particular attention is paid to a corpus of speeches by French politicians, delivered in different contexts and in relation to various discursive constraints. The aim is to show how the « African woman » came to be, as an imaginary, how it circulates within social groups, and, finally, how political leaders use it in their speeches. This use operates a set of categorizations, maintaining the « African woman » in social imaginaries at odds with the realities of Africa.

One of the prolific writers in the discipline of African Biblical Hermeneutics is the Nigerian Old Testament (OT) scholar, Professor Tuesday David Adamo. In his tireless efforts to unlock the OT reality for African contexts, persuaded by his commitment to decolonise the subject of Biblical Studies, Adamo has made successful efforts to reflect on the African presence in the Old Testament. The present study seeks to engage Adamo’s concept of African Biblical hermeneutics in order to investigate whether the author sufficiently discussed the theme of gender in his discourses. This research attempts to respond to the following two main questions in view of Adamo’s discourses: (1) In Adamo’s concerted effort of confirming the presence of Africa and Africans in the Hebrew Bible, does the woman question feature? (2) If so, how does Adamo navigate the question?

Most of the time, women’s names are not mentioned, words are not put in their mouths or they are not allowed to say a word, and their achievements are behind the scene in the narratives. Passages that mention the presence and contribution of African women in the Bible are especially neglected, perhaps because there are few African women biblical scholars and also deep prejudices against women. References to the African wife of Moses (Numbers 12) are so scanty in the Bible that very few critical biblical scholars noticed them. The purpose of this article is to discuss critically the narrative of the Cushite woman whom Moses married and her marginalisation by the author of the story in Numbers 12:1-10. The narrator of the text did not only refuse to give her a name, there is no single word put in her mouth despite the dominant and significant role her presence played in the narrative. Why is she silent and what does her silence mean? The answers to these questions are discussed in this article.

Issues of positionality of Black African researchers researching African issues is seldom discussed in methodological literature. In this article, I reflect from an African perspective on issues of insider/outsider positionalities and of serendipity and unexpectedness during my fieldwork which are areas often dominated by writing from the global north and by writers and researchers who do not identify as African people of color and hope that my article will contribute to fill this gap. I share my background, identity, gender and age, and how these might have influenced my approach and interpretation during the process. My qualitative study explored perspectives and subjective experiences of Xhosa speaking adults with epilepsy and their carers in an urban Black township in Cape Town, South Africa. I conclude with the tortoise metaphor to show the cultural relevance thereof, the importance of curiosity and of embracing events of unexpectedness in fieldwork. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Female disempowerment is a major problem throughout the world. Disempowered women face a variety of economic, social, and physical ills, which erodes their self-image, limits their ability to make independent choices, and leaves them powerless against abuse. A disproportionate number of African women find themselves in these desperate circumstances and require immediate aid. This research was conducted to determine whether microfinance interventions targeting women in Ghana and South Africa were effective at meeting several female empowerment goals. An evaluation of secondary data revealed significant, positive improvements on all five female empowerment indicators being measured. This is incredibly encouraging for disempowered women in Africa and throughout the world. However, although women involved in both interventions saw substantial increases in female empowerment, the majority of them continued to rely on their husbands for financial support. Thus, future interventions should consider increasing women's access to larger microloans so they can maximize their business profits and become more self-reliant. It is also vital that future interventions establish stronger, cross-sector collaborations and consider how other factors (such as geographic location, village design, education, and local laws) might contribute to the severe disempowerment of women. The saying "It takes a village to raise a child" has never been truer than in my case. This autobiographical article documents my growing up and working on three different continents and my influencers along the way. Born in a village in Nigeria, West Africa, I spent the first 12 years of life with my grandmother living in a mud house and attending a village primary school. I walked barefoot to school every day, learned to read, and wrote on a chalk slate. At the age of 13, I moved to my second "village," London, England. In secondary school my love of science began to blossom. I attained a double major in chemistry and human biology from the University of Hertfordshire and a PhD in biophysics from the University of London, with a research project aimed at designing anticancer agents. I was mentored by Terence Jenkins and Stephen Neidle. For my postdoctoral training, I crossed the ocean again, to the United States, my third "village." In Michael Rossmann's group at Purdue University, my love for viruses was ignited. My independent career in structural virology began at Warwick University, England, working on pathogenic single-stranded DNA packaging viruses. In 2020, I am a full professor at the University of Florida. Most of my research is focused on the adeno-associated viruses, gene delivery vectors. My list of mentors has grown and includes Nick Muzyczka. Here, the mentee has become the mentor, and along the way, we attained a number of firsts in the field of structural virology and contributed to the field at the national and international stages.
