This article analyzes two paintings by Jakob Bogdani, of the exotic aviaries of Admiral Churchill at Little Park, Windsor, between 1708 and 1710. In it, I argue that by following Bodgani's development from a painter of traditional still lifes to an innovative painter of exotic birds, we can trace the emergence of new rhetorical strategies, in which English colonial expansion and global trade are made to seem natural, agentless, and uncontested. These same strategies are evident in Alexander Pope's Windsor‐Forest, written at the same time, about the same geographic space. While it appears to have been replaced by a simple, celebratory dynamic, the central tension of the still‐life genre (or nature morte in French) between vivification and decay continues to animate Bogdani's bird paintings. Morte continues to shadow nature, through the appearance of two native British birds, a titmouse and a bullfinch, which he painted from dead specimens. Their appearance troubles the glorification of global expansion on display in these canvases, reminding viewers of the violence and death that underwrote European expansion into colonial territories. I argue that Bogdani's birds are uneasily suspended between the objects of earlier still‐life paintings, and the subjects of later nature painting, and that in attending to their ungainly or uncanny aspects, we can see the outlines of a global Enlightenment. For decades, authors of World War II have labeled Vice Admiral Robert L. Ghormley a failed commander in chief of the South Pacific Area during 1942. They have portrayed him as an overly cautious, pessimistic, and even defeatist leader whom Admiral Chester Nimitz, fortunately, replaced with the more aggressive and successful Vice Admiral William F. Halsey in October 1942. Yet Ghormley performed well as South Pacific commander under difficult circumstances, and his actions compare favorably with those of his more-venerated successor. The paper aims to outline the circumstances that led France to conclude a treaty with Japan in the second half of the 19th century. The traditional historiographical approach to the issue of the opening of Japan's ports highlights the American role or Commodore Perry's mission of 1853 or analogically focuses on British, Russian, and Dutch policy in the Far East. However, France was one of the European states that had so far shown interest in Japanese ports in establishing trade relations. The paper aims to describe French activities in the Far East in relation to Japan, considering the missionary activity in the Ryukyu Islands and the actions of French admirals who attempted to open Japanese ports of their own accord in the 1840s. In the introduction to the appendix of modern maps by Martin Waldseemüller in the famous Strasbourg Ptolemy atlas of 1513 is a "puzzling sentence" that mentions a so-called "Admiral's Map." During the nineteenth century, historians struggled to understand what map was the Admiral's, who the Admiral was, and how this Admiral's Map related to the maps made by Waldseemüller. Since then, most who have looked at the question of the Admiral's Map have merely repeated the tentative conclusions made in the nineteenth century. With the benefit of the recovery of important cartographic works since that time, we can now make a more definitive conclusion: the Admiral's Map was the Caverio planisphere (c. 1506). This article examines the life of Lady Elizabeth Anson (1725–60), daughter of Philip Yorke, 1st earl of Hardwicke, and the wife of Admiral George Lord Anson, first lord of the admiralty. Using a sample of her letters, this article argues that Lady Anson engaged with letter-writing as an inherently political activity. Previous studies of Lady Anson's correspondence have emphasized her role in the Yorkes' political network, but this article foregrounds her marriage to Lord Anson and her life at the admiralty. In a marriage shaped by the strains of naval service, Lady Anson used her talents as a letter-writer to establish a role for herself as her husband's political partner. Building on the work of Elaine Chalus, Judith Lewis, and Sarah Richardson, this article explores the ways in which Lady Anson used letters to disseminate intelligence and negotiate patronage. It examines her friendship with the powerful admiralty secretary, John Cleveland, and considers the ways in which her physical proximity to the admiralty office gave her privileged access to the inner workings of the Royal Navy. From the onset of World War II, America needed men of integrity, ability, and proven leadership to facilitate the wartime economy—the nation turned to CPAs for help. In 1941, the president of the American Institute of Accountants, N. Loyall McLaren, stepped away from his accounting firm and from his Institute presidency to serve in the U.S. Navy where he handled a variety of accounting-related duties. McLaren was a pioneer California CPA, serving as a partner in the largest firm in the Golden State, and had served as president of the California Society of CPAs. He later was a powerful business leader in the San Francisco area; his firm eventually merged with Haskins & Sells. Verticillium lecanii (Zimm) conidia were formulated in our laboratory (a myco-insecticide), WP (2.5%) and tested for its reduction on the mango shield scale, M. mangiferae (Green) different stages on the host plant trees comparing with a commercial insecticide (Pyriproxyphen (Admiral), 10% EC) for their reduction of each M. mangiferae stage as well as its total population. All the treated insect stages populations were differently affected in a function of the treated stage and the time after treatment (exposure time). The formulated bio-insecticide (myco-insecticide) was significantly more toxic than pyriproxyfen (admiral) in its effect on adult population especially after two weeks of treatment during the two season’s treatment. It showed an effect similar to the pyriproxyfen (admiral) against the other stages. Both the 1st and the 2nd nymph instars were less affected than the other treated stages (adult and crawler) with the two tested bio-insecticides. The low toxicity of the formulated V. lecanii to non-target biota encouraged us to stress on its entrance to the entomopathogenic fungi clique against the examined insect, M. mangiferae. As it is known, the Knights of Rhodes were the most important religiouslooking piracy organization that threatened the security of Turks and Muslims in the Mediterranean region until the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. After the capture of Rhodes by the Turks in 1522, this organization, which settled in Malta and became the Knights of Malta, continued its piracy and bandit activities uninterruptedly. The Ottoman Empire wanted to seize Malta to end the activities of this organization, and despite the martyrdom of a great admiral like Turgut Reis, it could not be successful. The classical methods used in history to seize an island are blockade, siege, and direct attack. The Ottoman Empire, on the other hand, adopted a strategy other than the known methods; He tried to seize Malta by organizing a revolt by a captive pasha by organizing Turkish and Muslim captives. In this article, the plan of the captured Ottoman sailors to revolt in 1749 and seize Malta is examined through the work. Although this example was unsuccessful, it is understood that the Ottoman Empire implemented a "conquest strategy by organizing the prisoners". The study brings up a strategy and event implemented by the Turks, which will inspire the understanding of strategy of the modern period, and also opens a literary work about the Turks, which is almost unknown, to discussion. The presented study comprehensively assessed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) hybrid populations of F3-F5 generations, comparing with the standard barley cultivars, Karagaydinckiy-5 and Astana-2000. The crossing of isolated barley cultivars of the international collection (obtained from Australia) proceeded under intense continental climatic conditions of Northern and Central Kazakhstan. Barley promising selected populations, i.e., Macguarie x Arna, Flinders x Tselinniy golozerniy, and Flinders x Omskiy golozerniy, showed early maturity (79-83 days), superior plant height (34.4-69.5 cm), and enhanced 1000-grain weight (56.6 g, 56.4 g, and 58.0 g, respectively), and populations, viz., Buloke x Karagandinckiy-6, Fathom x Donezckiy-9, and Onslow x Karabalykckiy-43, for productivity (1 m2) at 184 g, 116.4 g, and 140.1 g, respectively. Identified in the study were the correlation of productivity and its structural elements, particularly the grain weight per ear (r = 0.486) and grain weight per plant (r = 0.828), mainly determining grain productivity. The determination of structural features variation showed a significant excess (more than 20%) with varying levels. The level of variability of grain mass per plant has shown in hybrid lines, i.e., Fathom x Karagandinckiy-5, Onslow x Karagandinckiy-10, Admiral x Karabalykckiy-150, and Admiral x Donezckiy-9. In grains, the protein content ranged from 10.45% to 16.63%, and the excess over the standard cultivar resulted in the hybrid lines Franklin x Sabir (16.63%), Anodolu-86 x Donezckiy-8 (16.04%), and Flinders x Omskiy golozerniy (15.31%). Based on an average of the study years, the drought-resistant and highproductivity hybrid lines were Buloke x Karagadinckiy-6, Fathom x Donezckiy-9, Onslow x Karabalykckiy-43, Onslow x (Karagandinckiy-5 x Arna), Bass x Karabalykckiy-150, Granal x CMB93H-805-F-1Y-1M-OY-17TRS-OAP, and Granal x CMB89A-380-1M-OGH-105GH-1B-1OY-OAP-19AP-OAP. These promising genotypes can benefit the development of drought-resistant and highyielding barley cultivars through future breeding programs under prevailing environmental conditions. The declaration of the US Diplomatic Service of July 28, 1922, recorded in a covert form the temporary statehood of Lithuania, at the same time of Latvia and Estonia, i.e., as long as Bolshevik Russia exists, and the conditionality of these states, recognizing only their governments, but not the states themselves. In principle, this was in line with the Western countries-promoted vision of the national governments of autonomous Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia as part of democratic Russia. Such a vision was supported not only by the governments of the USA, France and Great Britain, but also by the leaders of the White Russians. The Wording "full recognition" used in the declaration of recognition meant recognition de jure and de facto. The USA, in envisioning its relations with the future democratic Russia, did not name these concepts directly in its document of recognition. Before the official, though peculiar, diplomatic act, the USA maintained informal relations with the Baltic States. Their basis was the indirect recognition de facto based on the May 26, 1919, note to Admiral Alexander Kolchak. The USA, unlike major European countries, did not announce it officially until 1922. A factorial in randomized complete block design (RCBD), with three replicates, including three seeding rates (200,250, and300seeds.m-2 ), and three grain size grades of Admiral variety of triticale whole (ungraded), thousand seed weight (TSW) 47.32g, heavy seeds 54.04g and light seeds 40.18g; for two successive growing seasons 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. The results revealed that spike length resembled number of spikelets per spike, grain density and number of grain per spike as seeding rate 200 with whole seeds attained highest value. Great differences between the two seasons were obvious, which was attributed to shortage in rainfall in the second season(407.1mm and 165.4mm). The interaction of seeding rate 200 with heavy size seeds resulted in maximum biological yield (6233 kg.ha-1 ). The interaction of target seed rate 200 with heavy seeds resulted in maximum grain yield(2895 kg.ha-1 ). Harvest index was highest value for interaction of seed rate 300 with light seed size which was(4.8). Thousand kernels weight give superior weight for the interaction of rate 200 seeds with heavy grade size(52.02g), the second season was clearly obvious as heavy grade resulted in heavier seeds significantly(14.88g) although it was very small atrophic seeds due to shortage of rainfall. Protein content as percentage was significantly affected by seeding rate, seed grade and their interaction for the first season protein% at 200 seeding rate surpassed other rates(12.04%). Seed grade of whole ungraded seeds resulted in higher protein(12.25%). With respect of the interaction, the highest values was (13.03%) for whole seeds with target rate 200 seeds.m-2. Stanton suggests that Roger's father, Richard of Lauria, was also killed at the battle, and although this cannot be definitively proven, Stanton's argument is convincing. Here I explore an individuation process (my own), lived through the making of The Red Admiral's Wing, a mandala emerging from an extended conversation between the Gaiascope (a physical device for fostering deep ecological experiences), the I Ching, and the Azoth mandala of the 17th century alchemist Basil Valentine. The elucidation and emergence of The Red Admiral's Wing required combining a contemplative, soulful attitude with noticing and quantifying word overlaps amongst the three interlocutors. A statistical analysis of the resulting data produced a strikingly synchronistic outcome. For me, as a scientific ecologist, Gaia, our sacred Earth, has been my guiding myth throughout my life. Given the severity of the global ecological crisis and of our almost willful collective ignorance of it, perhaps it is not surprising that Gaia reappears, as yet far too rarely, as a transcendent function of science and myth, as in this paper. This research emerged out of my five-year transformational soul work with Jungian analyst Julian David in the ancient soulfulness of Luscombe, his beautiful home in South Devon, England. In doing this work I experienced powerful integrative forces in long moments of expansion of Gaian consciousness. Frequent visits to my sacred Gaia Places under Yarner Beacon—the Beacon of the Storyteller—at our home near Schumacher College, Dartington, Devon, were essential in this process. My hope is that The Red Admiral's Wing will sweep readers along as it did me in a hugely enlivening process of psychological development that comes as a gift from Gaia—from the vast depths of the living mind of nature. This article analyzes the presence of the Chilean Restoration Army in Peru during the two campaigns against the Peruvian-Bolivian Confederation, which was led by Marshal Andrés de Santa Cruz. Admiral Manuel Blanco Encalada commanded the first campaign, in 1837, and General Manuel Bulnes the second, between 1838 and 1839. Although the main purpose of the army was to put an end to the Confederation, other goals were to put Peruvian general Agustín Gamarra into power, to settle the debts that Peru had owed Chile since the Independence and to take charge of the expenses generated as a result of the occupation. The article reviews relevant press and Peru’s National Archive, deeply examining the political and economic problems caused by the Army’s presence, especially after the victory in Yungay, from January 20 to October 1839. On the morning of 27 May 1941, the HMS Rodney fired the opening salvos of the final act of the Bismarck saga. Some nineteen minutes later at 10:40 A.M.GMT, the Bismarck's bow disappeared beneath the wave-swept waters. Over the years, a number of "why" questions have been raised concerning Admiral Günther Lütjens, his behavior, actions, and decisions. Arguments have been presented contending that he had made some very foolish decisions that demonstrated a lack of judgment and professionalism bordering on incompetence. A case has also been made that Admiral Lütjens had lost his grip on himself, his command, and the situation. From an historical perspective, there is strong data and evidence to support each example. Nevertheless, by changing one's perspective is it possible that a different picture might come into focus, suggesting that that there may be more to the story than meets the eye? Therefore, the goal of this investigation was to view the historical data through a different set of lenses with the intent of uncovering something new. The end result was the development of a thesis that centers on the notion that Admiral Lütjens' actions may have actually been very deliberate, with the ultimate objective being to deliver the pride of the Third Reich into the hands of the Royal Navy. Larvae of the Indian red admiral butterfly, Vanessa indica (Herbst, 1794), fold the leaves of the host plants along the midvein to construct shelters. Usually, one leaf is used for every shelter, although more than one leaf are sometimes used. To determine the conditions under which larvae use more than one leaf to construct a shelter, a field investigation of the larval shelters was conducted. Early instar larvae used multiple leaves in a shelter when a larger leaf served as the main leaf. In comparison, in later instars used multiple leaves when a smaller leaf served as the main leaf. When an early instar larva uses a large, tough leaf, it may not be able to fold it sufficiently and there may be gaps in the surface of the shelter. In such a case, a larva in the early instar may add nearby leaves to cover the gaps, so that the shelter has more than one leaf. Because later instar larvae can fold a leaf tightly, their shelters have no gaps. When later instar larvae use a small leaf, multiple leaves will be needed to expand the shelters within which they hide and feed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2019‒2020 The Russian Geographical Society organized a round-the-world expedition on the oceanographic research vessel Admiral Vladimirsky. One of the goals of this expedition was to determine the position of the South Magnetic Pole from experimental data. In the first part of this work, we solved the problem posed on the basis of declination data obtained during the expeditions of Bellingshausen and Cook. In the second part, the position of the South Magnetic Pole is determined from the data of component and magnitude measurements obtained on board the Admiral Vladimirsky. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the course of the 2019−2020 round-the-world expedition of the oceanographic research vessel Admiral Vladimirskii, which repeated the route of F. Bellingshausen and M. Lazarev in 1820, a large volume of magnetic data was obtained, including the data about the Antarctica area. One of the purposes of the performed investigation was to determine the position of the South magnetic pole from experimental data. This was the reason to revisit the data on the declination, which were obtained during the Bellingshausen expedition, and determine the position of the South magnetic pole from those data. In the first part of the present paper, to solve this problem, we propose and realize several methods, which were preliminarily tested on model examples. In the second part, the position of the South magnetic pole is determined from the data on the measurements of the magnitude and components of the magnetic field carried out onboard the oceanographic research vessel Admiral Vladimirskii. Three species of the genus Limenitis (Nymphalidae) (L. camilla, L. helmanni, L. sydyi) have split ranges in the Palearctic. Their disjunction was dated either to the Pleistocene or to the Subboreal time of the Holocene. This genus also exhibits an amphiberingean disjunction, L. populi vs four Nearctic species. To evaluate the disjunction time in Eurasia, we analysed a fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene and a major part of the histone H1 gene. The former was sequenced in 51 specimens of three species with Palearctic disjunctions. We detected a diverged nuclear copy of the COI gene in L. camilla. The histone H1 gene was sequenced in 64 specimens of 8 species. In five species, intra-species and intra-individual nucleotide substitutions and variation in the number of intra-genic repeats were observed and studied by cloning of individual gene copies, with individuals found with more than two variants. With 30–80 copies of histone H1 gene in Limenitis genomes, as estimated by real time PCR, this was interpreted as cis-heterogeneity across the histone gene cluster. No fixed differences between the western and eastern range parts were found in L. helmanni, L. camilla and L. sydyi, although in the former more alleles of both sequences were found in the eastern part. This suggests the range disjunctions to be too recent to be dated by molecular means and they may only be estimated to have taken place not more than 77–100 tya. This fits their provisional dating by Dubatolov and Kosterin (Entomologica Fennica 11(3), 141-161, 2000) to the Subboreal time of the Holocene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 1918, a Marshal's sword (Gensuitō) was introduced into the Japanese honours system, to be presented to specially recognised admirals and generals of the Imperial Japanese military who had been awarded the honorific title of Gensui. Later that year, a very fine example of such a sword was presented to King George V at Buckingham Palace, on behalf of Emperor Taishō. These swords were made to the highest standards by master swordsmiths, with no more than 24 produced before the abolishment of the rank of Gensui in 1945. Very little has been written about Gensuitō in Japanese, much less in English. The King George V Gensuitō, today held in the Royal Collection, is recognised for its aesthetic value, but has been the subject of only limited scholarship. As manifest challenger of the United States (US)-led international order, the People's Republic of China (PRC) has inaugurated a revisionist strategy that encompasses a multifaceted spectrum of initiatives, including an ambitious naval military build-up. History has shown that revisionist and challenging powers tend to defy the established order through arm races. US Admiral Mahan and German Admiral Tirpitz theorized two different approaches to naval strategy, the former focusing on global maritime hegemony and the latter on regional counterbalance based on risk theory. This article attempts at explaining the puzzle of China's naval buildup through the lenses of geopolitics, adding a geopolitical dimension to the current debate. It suggests that the PRC's naval military development does not follow a Mahanian global maritime strategy aimed at challenging the US primacy worldwide, but rather a Tirpitzian regional approach focused on counterbalancing the US presence within the scope of China's sea power projection, that is, the Pacific region. To substantiate this hypothesis, the study compares diachronically contemporary Chinese naval arm race with Wilhelmine Germany's High Seas Fleet. The findings underscore that, in maritime terms, China's revisionism vis-à-vis the US somewhat resembles that of Imperial Germany vis-à-vis Imperial Britain, both aiming at regional counterbalance and anti-access and area-denial (A2/AD) tactics rather than global maritime counterhegemony. Although Chinese sea power is still far from posing a serious threat to that of the US and its allies, an unrestrained continuation of Beijing's naval buildup could encourage arms races and direct confrontation due to regional security dilemmas. The church of S. Mary of the Admiral in Palermo, known as "La Martorana" and very famous for its Byzantine mosaics, has been a World Heritage site since 2015. The mosaic system of the church includes several groups of figures and scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. From the western part of the ancient church only two mosaics survive, detached from their original position, and are now located in two internal chapels. On the occasion of several restoration works, these two mosaic panels were investigated with non-invasive techniques, in order to provide diagnostic support to the restoration and consolidation interventions. The investigations were aimed at detecting any air pockets that could cause the detachment of the tesserae or of possible differences between cement mortars under the tesserae. For this purpose, the integrated use of two non-invasive techniques namely infrared thermography (IRT) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) was considered. The joint analysis of IRT and GPR data allowed the interpretative uncertainties inherent in each technique to be reduced. Furthermore, for both techniques differentiated analyses were performed for layers at different depths under the mosaic surface. The results of these analyses were found to be more reliable regarding GPR data, compared to infrared thermography, the latter being more influenced by the reflectivity of the tesserae. The article will give an argumentative response to an interesting question which travels nowadays. How many aircraft carriers does Russian Federation have, none, one or two? There are three possible answers to this question. The 1st answer and most common is one, because everyone knows that Russian Federation poses “Admiral Kuznetsov” aircraft carrier, an old ship which is undergoing a long repair and modernization process. The 2nd answer can be none because there are rumors which say that after finishing its repairment process, aircraft carrier “Admiral Kuznetsov” will be transformed in a museum and it won’t sail again. The 3rd answer, a more realistic one, may be two, if we take into consideration the fact that Crimean Peninsula can act as an aircraft carrier. We all know that aircraft carriers never sail alone, they always have a group of ships/ vessels near them in order to provide logistic support, assure force protection on sea, from land or from underwater threats and sometimes it can be a deterrence force in the region. Within the article I will argue that the third answer is right and Crimean Peninsula can be considered a plane carrier by showing its military capabilities, insisting on contribution of electronic warfare assets to A2/AD (Anti-Access/Aria-Denial) environment. In drug-coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty for femoropopliteal lesions, there are adverse effects of drug embolization on downstream non-target organs following the slow-flow phenomenon. We devised a novel method, known as VaSodilator injection via the Over-the-wire lumen during DCB dilatation to Prevent the slow-flow phenomenon in treatment of femoropopliteal lesions (V.S.O.P.), and evaluated its efficacy and safety. This single-center, retrospective, observational study analyzed 196 femoropopliteal lesions treated with IN.PACT Admiral between April 2018 and July 2023. The IN.PACT Admiral is a DCB consisting of a 0.035-inch over-the-wire (OTW) lumen balloon coated with high-dose paclitaxel. Regarding the V.S.O.P. method, we injected vasodilators through the OTW lumen during DCB dilation of the lesions. The cohort was classified into two groups according to the use of the V.S.O.P. method (V.S.O.P. group: n = 53; non-V.S.O.P. group: n = 143). The V.S.O.P. group had lower rates of hemodialysis (21% vs. 43%, p = 0.01) and higher rates of critical limb-threatening ischemia (56% vs. 23%, p < 0.01) and severe calcification lesions (Peripheral Arterial Calcium Scoring Systems score 3/4) (53% vs. 34%, p = 0.01) than the non-V.S.O.P. group. The occurrence of the slow-flow phenomenon was significantly lower in the V.S.O.P. group than in the non-V.S.O.P. group. The V.S.O.P. method could be an effective method for preventing the slow-flow phenomenon after DCB angioplasty for femoropopliteal lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The USDA‐ARS announces the release of the meadow bromegrass [Bromus biebersteinii Roem. & Schult. (excluded)] cultivar 'HighWest' (Reg. no. CV‐25, PI 698169) for use on irrigated and semi‐irrigated pastures as a rapidly establishing forage grass with excellent dry matter yield (DMY) on sites receiving 350 mm of either annual precipitation or irrigation. Selection emphasis in HighWest meadow bromegrass was on crude protein (CP), DMY regrowth, quality, and seedling emergence from a deep planting depth under irrigation. HighWest has been evaluated in Utah comparing it to meadow bromegrass cultivars 'Cache', 'Arsenal', 'Regar', 'Admiral', and 'Armada'. Genotyping by sequencing demonstrated that HighWest is significantly different genetically from Cache (P <.043), Arsenal (P <.003), Regar (P <.040), Admiral (P <.001), and Armada (P <.028) and grouped closest to Cache and Arsenal, consistent with its breeding pedigree. HighWest had greater (P <.05) percentage seedling emergence frequency at Millville, UT, compared with Arsenal, Regar, Armada, and Admiral. Based on a selection index that combined percentage seedling emergence frequency, DMY, and CP values, HighWest had a greater index value at 2.8 compared with Cache (1.7), Arsenal (−0.6), Regar (−3.2), Armada (−1.5), and Admiral (−1.0). Dry matter yield regardless of harvest date was similar to Cache, Arsenal, Regar, Admiral, and Armada. Forage regrowth of HighWest had CP values 6% greater than Cache. Water‐soluble carbohydrates were 22% greater in HighWest (87.0 g kg−1) than Cache. HighWest provides ranchers with additional plant material that maintains DMY and improves forage regrowth quality over the cultivar Cache. The yield and the quality of grain and groats have been determined for rice varieties belonging to different ripening groups: earlyripening Komandor and Yuzhanin, mid-ripening Ukraina 96, Vikont, Admiral, Magic, and Lotto, and late-ripening Fukushikiri, Giza 177, and Sakha 101. As to the quantitative indicators of grain quality, the highest total yield of groats (about 70%) was recorded for early-ripening Yuzhanin, and mid-ripening Lotto, and Magic. The whole kernel output (about 90%) was registered for early-ripening Yuzhanin, mid-ripening Lotto, Vikont, and Ukraina 96, and late-ripening Sakha 101. Early-ripening Yuzhanin and mid-ripening Lotto were distinguished due to high yields and high values of major quantitative characteristics of grain quality (total output of groats, output of whole kernels, 1000-kernel weight). Yuzhanin also had a high content of protein in grain. Groats of mid-ripening Lotto, Magic, Admiral and Vikont, late-ripening Fukushikiri and Giza 177, and early-ripening Yuzhanin had high culinary qualities due to their high volume increase index (when boiled). The structure of groats was the best in early-ripening Yuzhanin, late-ripening Giza 177 and Fukushikiri, mid-ripening Lotto, Magic, and Admiral. Early-ripening Yuzhanin, mid-ripening Lotto, Magic, and Admiral, late-ripening Giza 177 and Fukushikiri were distinguished due to their groats colour; mid-ripening Vikont, Magic, and Admiral, lateripening Giza 177, and early-ripening Yuzhanin – due to the groats aroma; mid-ripening Lotto, Vikont, Magic, and Admiral, early-ripening Yuzhanin, late-ripening Giza 177 and Sakha 101 – due to their palatability. By the set of parameters indicating the culinary quality of groats (increase index, structure, colour, aroma, palatability), early-ripening Yuzhanin, midripening Lotto, Admiral, Magic, and Vikont, late-ripening Fukushikiri and Giza 177 were higher than the reference variety Ukraina 96. The results of comprehensive assessment of yields, grain quality, and culinary qualities of the groats have allowed singling out two cultivars: early-ripening Yuzhanin and mid-ripening Lotto. They have been found valuable enough to be more widely used in the production of rice grain and groats. New rice lines with high culinary qualities of groats have been originated from crossing the varieties having high-quality groats, in particular, Yuzhanin and Lotto. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The failure of the attempt against Hitler on 20th July 1944 – carried out by the Colonel and Chief of the Defense Staff, Count Claus von Stauffenberg – had terrible consequences for the conspirators, Germany, and Europe in general. Around five thousand persons, direct or indirectly linked to the Resistance movement, were executed between that date and the end of the war. The attempt was not well understood by the allied countries nor by the German people itself. The first recognition of Resistance heroism was paradoxically expressed by Winston Churchill in 1946. The Resistance against the Nazi dictatorship was much more important and started earlier than people think. Many of the high-ranking officers of the Wehrmacht participated in it. Among them stand out the last general in chief of the army before Hitler assumed power Kurt von Hammerstein, Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, General Ludwig Beck and many others. They made innumerable attempts, first of coups d’état and later of murdering the tyrant, which all devilishly failed. In contrast to Nazi authorities, most of the conspirators were very refined people of great culture. In this study I try to go deeper into the relationships that the executor of the last attempt, Count Claus von Stauffenberg, has with poetry and with music, by contributing some unpublished data in this regard. I also reproduce, in my own translation into Spanish, the two poems which the poet Stefan George gave the hero on his death bed eleven years before the attempt, and which undoubtedly constitute a mission which Stauffenberg became aware of only later. Another important element of this story is that many of them have great admiration for the poet Rainer Maria Rilke to such extent that they employ as a motto for recognizing themselves the last lines of his “Requiem For Wolf Graf von Kalckreuth”: “Who speaks of victory?
