Tahin üretiminde en önemli aşama susamın fiziksel ve kimyasal özelliklerini etkilediği için kavurmadır. Bu çalışmada tahin üretiminde kullanılan kabuksuz susam tohumlarının sıcak hava fritözünde optimum kavurma koşullarının belirlenmesi ve özelliklerinin konvansiyonel yöntemle karşılaştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında kabuğu soyulmuş susam tohumları farklı sıcaklık (160°C, 180°C ve 200°C) ve sürelerde (15-70 dakika) sıcak hava fritözünün haznesine 0,8 gr/cm3 olacak şekilde yayılarak kavrulmuştur. Kavurma işlemindeki sıcaklık ve süre parametreleri yanıt yüzey yöntemi kullanılarak optimize edilmiştir. Kavrulmuş örneklerin ΔE (toplam renk değişimi) ve su aktivitesi verilerine göre sıcak hava fritözünün optimum çalışma sıcaklığı ve süresi 181,1°C ve 36,7 dk olarak belirlenmiştir. Sıcak hava fritözünde kavurma neticesinde konvansiyonel kavurmaya göre yağ verimi %50’den %60’a çıkmıştır. En düşük peroksit değeri 1,69 meq O2/kg ile 180°C de 35 dk da sıcak hava fritözünde tespit edilmiştir. FTIR sonuçları da sıcak hava fritözü ile kavrulmuş susamların oksidasyona karşı daha dayanıklı olduğunu desteklemiştir. Sıcak hava fritözü ile 5 kat daha kısa sürede kavrulan susamların konvansiyonel kavurmaya göre asitlik değerleri ve yağ asidi kompozisyonları benzer bulunmuştur. HMF içeriğinde ise sağlık açısından riskli seviyede bir oluşum gözlenmemiştir.

ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of isotonic and hypotonic intravenous fluids in maintenance fluid therapy for term infants.MethodsThis was a multi-centre, prospective, observational study conducted in 21 participating centres from December 30, 2020, to June 30, 2023. The study included term newborns requiring parenteral fluid therapy for maintenance (NCT04781361). The fluid treatment was divided into two groups based on the concentration of sodium in the parenteral fluid, designated as hypotonic (NaCl 145 mmol/L), and the occurrence of clinically significant changes in sodium levels (∆pNa >0.5 mmol/L/h).ResultsA total of 420 patients from 21 centers were included. The ∆pNa was negative in the hypotonic fluid group and positive in the isotonic fluid group, with a significant difference between the groups [respectively −0.07 ± 0.03 (95% CI: −0.13 to −0.02); 0.04 ± 0.03 (95%CI: −0.02 to 0.09), p = 0.04]. There was no difference between the groups in terms of the development of hypernatremia or a clinically meaningful pNa increase. The hypotonic fluid group had a higher incidence of hyponatremia and a clinically meaningful sodium decrease compared to the isotonic fluid group [7.9% vs. 1.2% (OR:6.5, p:0.03)] and [12.2% vs.4.2% (OR:2.9, p = 0.03)].ConclusionContrary to current understanding, this large-scale study is the first to demonstrate that the use of hypotonic fluids in maintenance fluid therapy for newborns poses a risk of hyponatremia development, whereas isotonic fluid therapy appears safe.

Objective: We determined the diagnostic role of nucleated red blood cell (NRBC) count in neonates with moderate to severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Methods: Newborns treated for moderate-to-severe HIE in a neonatal intensive care unit between January 2020 and January 2021 were included in the study. The study was designed as a retrospective cohort. NRBC counts, blood gas, and demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded before and after treatment in newborns with HIE who received therapeutic hypothermia treatment and in healthy newborns as a control group. The results of the healthy control and moderate-severe HIE groups were compared. Results: A total of 90 infants, 45 in the control group and 45 in the HIE group, were included in the study. The groups were similar in terms of gestational week, birth weight, type of delivery and gender (p>0.05). The NRBC count before hypothermia was significantly higher in the HIE group than in the control group (p=0.001). After hypothermia treatment, NRBC count decreased significantly in the HIE group (p=0.001), and the results were similar in the control group. According to the results of the ROC analysis, the area under the curve was determined as 0.983. Maximum sensitivity and specificity and the threshold value for NRBC (x103/mm3) in predicting HIE was found to be 0.63 with 95% confidence intervals. Conclusion: NRBC count, which is an easy and a fast test, can be used in clinical practice to support the diagnosis of moderate-severe HIE.

Methods: This prospective study was performed on healthy term newborn infants that had normal progress throughout the first and second stages of labor during normal spontaneous delivery (NSD) and cesarean section (C/S). Immediately after birth, 1ml and 2 ml of umbilical venous cord blood samples were obtained for blood gas analysis and blood chemistry respectively. The Cl-Na ratio, anion gap (AG), albumin corrected AG (AGCorr), SID, SIDe, UMA and TA were calculated in NSD and C/S groups.. Results: A total of 181 healthy newborn infants were included the study. Fifty-one infants were delivered by NSD and 130 infants by C/S. The pH and PCO2 values were similar in both groups. The mode of delivery had a significant impact on the umbilical cord AG, AGCorr, SID, lactate, UMA, and TA levels. All these values were significantly higher in NSD than C/S group. Conclusion: Umbilical cord blood gas analysis is a common practice to evaluate fetal status at delivery. The calculation of blood gas parameters in perinatal problems according to Stewart’s method may lead further understanding how perinatal conditions of the mother influence the fetus and newborn infant.

The asymmetric crying face is an anomaly resulting from unilateral agenesis or hypoplasia of of the congenital depressor angular oris muscle. The most important finding of the disease is the absence or weakness in the outer and lower movement of the commissure during crying. Symptoms may also be present in the neonatal period. It may be isolated anomaly or associated with other congenital anomalies. In the literature, the most common cardiovascular anomalies and chromosomal disorders have been reported. It is diagnosed by physical examination and very rarely electromyelographic examination is required. In this paper, we present a one day old male patient with asymmetric crying facies not accompanied with anomalies in other systems. In such cases, although a comprehensive examination for early diagnosis and treatment is often required, diagnosis can often be made simply with physical examination.

The usage of carbon fiber reinforced composite materials increase at the present time; owing to their low density, fatigue resistance, higher strength and higher rigidity than the composites produced with glass fibers. In addition to this, these materials are hard to cut materials comparing to the others. In this study, surface roughness formation was investigated by using PCD cutting tools in milling of carbon fiber reinforced composite materials. Additionally, a mathematical model was built. During the experiments, PCD end mills with three different geometries were used. These end mills designed and produced as a part of the study. Experiments were conducted on a CNC vertical machining center. Three different cutting speeds (350, 400 and 450 m/min) and a constant feed rate (1270 mm/min) were used as cutting parameters. Increasing cutting speed effects surface roughness values positively. Moreover, the efficient parameters on surface roughness values were determined according to acquired ANOVA statistics following regression analysis.

Sahlep is obtained from tubers of orchids which grown in Mediterranean countries, especially in Turkey. As hydrocolloid, it is used for preparing hot drink and ice cream. However, orchid plants are damaged and sold with high priced. Therefore, searching of alternative production methods of sahlep are in progress. The products of the project, growing possibilities of sahlep orchids at farm conditions (cultivation) were researched in this study. The naturally grown sahlep which belongs to Serapias vomeracea and Orchis sancta species compared with that of cultivated products. Physicochemical and structural characterization analyses were performed for the samples. The tubers were obtained from Serapias vomeracea exhibited higher similarity in physicochemical properties with naturally grown one than Orchis sancta. Samples have Newtonian flow behavior. FTIR experiments which provide knowledge about chemicals bonds in structure revealed that cultivation studies have no effect on sahlep chemical structure. Amorph structure was determined with the XRD experiment for all samples. The variation of surface morphology of sahlep was observed with the cultivation by SEM. DSC and TGA analysis exhibited that samples had similar thermal stabilities. The results obtained showed that sahlep with the same physicochemical and structural characteristics with naturally grown could be achieved by cultivation. The development and widening in this production method provides both protection of wild orchids and cheaper sahlep production.

Background Oral administration of probiotics in newborn preterm infants has been shown to be helpful, especially ın reducıng the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis and overall mortality rates. Objective To evaluate the effect of probıotıc supplementation on ıntestınal colonization by antibiotic-resistant microorganisms in preterm infants receiving antibiotics in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods The prospective, randomized trial was performed ın preterm infants who were hospitalized in the NICU at Baskent University Ankara Hospital between January 2011 and February 2012. A total of 51 infants were enrolled and randomly assigned to one of two groups: Group 1 (n=27) received probiotic therapy and Group 2 (n=24) did not receive probiotics. The probiotic used was Lactobacillus reuteri (Biogaia® AB, Sweden). Subjects underwent weekly nasal swab and stool cultures for a maxımum of 6 weeks, and at the tıme of dıscharge ıf thıs was prıor to 6 weeks. All posıtıve cultures were further tested for culture-specıfıc ıdentıfıcatıon and antıbıotıc suceptibility. Results A total of 607 cultures were evaluated. Posıtıve cultures were found ın 37.9% from Group 1 and 35.2% from Group 2. Intestınal colonızatıon by antıbıotıc-resıstant bacterıa dıd not sıgnıfıcantly dıffer between groups (P>0.05). Conclusions Oral supplementation with probiotics do not prevent the intestınal colonization of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms in preterm NICU patıents who receıved antıbıotıc treatment.

This work presents a novel trusted LC voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with an embedded compact analog Physically Unclonable Function (PUF) used for authentication. The trusted VCO is implemented in a 1P9M 65 nm standard CMOS process and consumes 1.75 mW. It exhibits a measured phase noise (PN) of −104.8 dBc/Hz @ 1 MHz and −132.2 dBc/Hz @ 10 MHz offset, resulting in Figures of Merit (FoMs) of 191.7 dBc/Hz and 199.1 dBc/Hz, respectively. With the measured frequency tuning range (TR) of ~5.5 GHz, the FoM with tuning (FoMT) reaches 197.6 dBc/Hz and 205.0 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz and 10 MHz offset, respectively. The analog PUF consists of CMOS cross-coupled pairs in the main VCO to change analog characteristics. Benefiting from the impedance change and parasitic capacitance of the cross-coupled pairs, the AC and DC responses of the VCO are utilized for multiple responses for each input. The PUF consumes 0.83 pJ/bit when operating at 1.5 Gbps. The proposed PUF exhibits a measured Inter-Hamming Distance (HD) of 0.5058b and 0.4978b, with Intra-HD reaching 0.0055b and 0.0053b for the current consumption and fosc, respectively. The autocorrelation function (ACF) of 0.0111 and 0.0110 is obtained for the current consumption and fosc, respectively, at a 95% confidence level.

Multiple systemic risk factors are associated with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). We analyzed the role of low weight gain (WG) to predict the development of stage 3+ ROP among preterm infants. This study included 126 newborns with birth weight ⩽1500 g and gestational age <32 weeks. Preterm newborn infants were divided into two groups according to severity of ROP as: preterm infants without ROP or mild ROP (Group 1) and preterm infants with stage 3+ ROP (Group 2). WG and WG proportion were measured at completed 4 and 6 weeks of life. The patients under the cut-off point according to receiver operating characteristic curve were classified as low WG patients. WG and WG proportion were significantly lower in Group 2 than in Group 1 at the 4th and 6th weeks of life. We concluded that low WG and WG proportion at the 4th and 6th weeks of life were predictive for the development of stage 3+ ROP. Preterm babies with low birth weight and low WG should be followed closely for severe ROP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract  To evaluate the expression of lymphocyte subsets in newborns diagnosed as culture proven or culture negative sepsis and to investigate the differentiation. The aim of this study is to explore neonatal immunology in newborns diagnosed as culture proven or culture negative neonatal sepsis and to identify their place in the diagnosis. This prospective study was performed in newborns who were diagnosed as neonatal sepsis and hospitalized in a tertiary care hospital and who were classified as culture proven sepsis (n = 12), as culture negative sepsis (n = 21) and healthy (n = 17). Lymphocyte subsets were obtained at time of diagnosis. Recent studies have shown that the oxidative state plays an important role in the pathophysiology of neuroinflammatory diseases. Determination of erythrocyte arginase, and catalase (CAT), and also plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide (NO) concentrations were measured to establish differences between antioxidant state and lipid peroxidationto assess prognosis in neuroinflammatory disease. Three groups were studied, meningitis (n = 28), encephalitis (n = 30), and a control group (n = 40) for the spectrophotometric measurements of arginase, and CAT activities in erythrocytes, thiosemicarbazide diacetylmonoxime, and Aebi methods were used respectively. Plasma and CSF MDA levels were analyzed with a modified Yagi method and NO levels were assessed using spectrophotometric methods using the Griess reaction. Levels of erythrocyte arginase, erythrocyte CAT, and CSF NO differed between meningitis and encephalitis (P < 0.05). While levels of erythrocyte CAT, and CSF MDA, plasma NO and CSF NO concentrations differed between the meningitis group and controls (P < 0.05). Concentrations of erythrocyte arginase, CSF MDA and plasma NO differed between encephalitis and control groups (P < 0.05). All tests in the study except erythrocyte arginase and plasma MDA differed between meningitis cases and controls (P < 0.05).
