1. A Forty-Year Systematic Review of World Englishes: Implications for Teaching, Learning, and Language Policy

Abstract: This study aimed to explore the linguistic factors that influence the development and diversification of World Englishes along with implications for language teaching, learning, and policy, and to examine the trends in research related to WEs. Using a systematic review process with MAXQDA 20.2.1, the findings indicate that research on World Englishes has focused on a variety of linguistic elements, with a particular emphasis on syntax, phonology, and discourse and pragmatics. The study also highlights the importance of understanding the cultural and linguistic contexts in which English is being used, as these contexts can have a significant impact on the linguistic features and pragmatic norms of different varieties of English. Regarding the challenges that learners face when learning WEs, the findings suggest that learners may struggle with the different semantic features and pragmatic norms of different WEs varieties. In terms of trends in research related to WEs, the findings show a growing interest in the study of WEs from various linguistic and cultural perspectives, including sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, and language education. However, there is a need for a more interdisciplinary approach to research on WEs, incorporating diverse perspectives and methodologies.

2. Politeness and Corrective Feedback: Immediate and Delayed Performance

Abstract: This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effect of polite corrective feedback (CF) on Iranian EFL learners' immediate and delayed grammatical accuracy. The participants included a convenient sample of 60 intermediate male/female EFL learners (four 15-member groups) selected from a private language institute in Tabriz. After the researcher ensured the homogeneity of the participants, a researcher-made multiple-choice pre-test on present and past English tenses was administered. Later, the first and second experimental groups were treated with +Polite Explicit Feedback (in the form of elicitations) and +Polite Implicit CF (in the form of recasts), respectively while the control groups were provided with -Polite Feedback of the same forms. Following the assessment of the learners' oral grammatical accuracy immediately after the treatment (uptake), a multiple-choice post-test was administered two weeks after the immediate post-test to assess their delayed recall. The independent samples t-test and ANCOVA conducted on the pre-test, immediate learning scores, and delayed post-test scores indicated that, although polite CF in both groups had a significant effect on learners' grammatical accuracy, +Polite Explicit Feedback had a more significant effect on participants' performance than -Polite Explicit Feedback and +Polite Implicit Feedback. The results underscore the significance of integrating politeness element into CF discourse, bearing implications for educational planners, materials developers, and EFL instructors.

Abstract: The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) describes signals detected with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo up to the end of their third observing run. Updating the previous GWTC-2.1, we present candidate gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences during the second half of the third observing run (O3b) between 1 November 2019, 15∶00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and 27 March 2020, 17∶00 UTC. There are 35 compact binary coalescence candidates identified by at least one of our search algorithms with a probability of astrophysical origin p_{astro}>0.5. Of these, 18 were previously reported as low-latency public alerts, and 17 are reported here for the first time. Based upon estimates for the component masses, our O3b candidates with p_{astro}>0.5 are consistent with gravitational-wave signals from binary black holes or neutron-star–black-hole binaries, and we identify none from binary neutron stars. However, from the gravitational-wave data alone, we are not able to measure matter effects that distinguish whether the binary components are neutron stars or black holes. The range of inferred component masses is similar to that found with previous catalogs, but the O3b candidates include the first confident observations of neutron-star–black-hole binaries. Including the 35 candidates from O3b in addition to those from GWTC-2.1, GWTC-3 contains 90 candidates found by our analysis with p_{astro}>0.5 across the first three observing runs. These observations of compact binary coalescences present an unprecedented view of the properties of black holes and neutron stars.

4. Accuracy of Subclinical Ketosis Detection with Rapid Test Methods for BHBA in Blood in Commercial Dairy Farms

Abstract: This study gives an overview of the performance and accuracy of devices used for the fast measurement of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) in blood for the on-farm indication of subclinical ketosis. Data were collected on ten dairy farms. In each farm, blood samples were taken from ten cows on four test days (2, 4, 9 and 11), resulting in 400 samples. The reference method was the BHBA concentration in blood serum (BHBALAB). Four different devices that measure BHBA in whole blood were tested. The thresholds applied for identifying subclinical ketosis were ≥1.0, ≥1.2 and ≥1.4 mmol/L in blood serum. The BHBALAB was assigned in three classes: low—≤0.9 mmol/L; high—>0.9 mmol/L; and total—all values unclassified. Due to initial negative effects on the health and performance of cows with BHBA levels ≥0.9 mmol/L, this cut-off was chosen. The Passing–Bablok regression revealed different constant as well as absolute biases for each device in the aforementioned classes. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve indicated highly accurate results, with 94–97% accuracy levels. As an overall conclusion, the performance of the devices was good and supports their use by farmers for the detection of subclinical ketotic cows in their herds.

5. Bibliometric Analysis of Virtual Reality in Science Education over the Three Decades (1993-2023)

Abstract: This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the use of virtual reality in science education over three decades (1993-2023). The method involved data from Google Scholar-indexed publications using Publish or Perish with keywords related to "virtual reality" and" education" over the past 3 decades. Nine hundred and eighty-six publications were obtained with a total of 131,130 citations with an average of 133 citations/paper and 4371 citations/year. The collected data were then screened to ensure its quality. Next, VOSviewer software was conducted to perform co-authorship and co-occurrence analysis. The results of the co-authorship analysis showed that there were 164 authors eligible to be visualized and divided into 88 clusters, indicating a high level of collaboration among authors in this field. Co-occurrence analysis shows that "virtual reality" has an occurrence of 696 in cluster 5 and "science education" is only16 in cluster 2 with word networks formed only on the words "virtual reality," "education," and "field." This study emphasizes the need for better VR in science education and more research on its impact on students' science literacy. It outlines VR usage trends in science education, informing future studies. The findings particularly highlight the importance of investigating VR's effectiveness in formal educational settings.

6. An Exploratory Study of the Influence of CELTA/TESOL Certification on Non-Native English Teachers' Practical Teaching Knowledge

Abstract: The demand for proficient English language teachers has increased significantly in non-native English-speaking countries, emphasizing the need for effective teacher training programs. This study investigated the influence of the CELTA/TESOL certification on non-native English teachers' practical teaching knowledge and efficacy perceptions in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting. A qualitative approach was employed, and data were collected via semi-structured interviews. The participants comprised eight Iranian EFL teachers who completed the CELTA/TESOL certification program. Before the certification course, the teachers exhibited diverse teaching approaches, emphasizing teacher-centered methods. Their confidence levels varied, and they faced challenges in classroom management and addressing student needs. The lack of formal training in practical teaching techniques was evident among participants. Following the certification course, significant positive changes were observed in the teachers' self-reported practices and self-efficacy perceptions. Participants also showed positive dispositions towards student-centered approaches, integrated learner needs and interests, and utilized diverse instructional strategies. The course contributed to effective lesson planning and classroom management. Collaborative learning and ongoing professional development were fostered, enhancing the teachers' reflective practice. As a result, the non-native English teachers reported increased confidence in their teaching abilities. This study contributes to understanding the benefits of the CELTA/TESOL certification program for non-native English teachers and emphasizes the importance of practical teacher training in EFL contexts. It highlights the transformative potential of such certification courses in bridging the gap in practical teaching knowledge and supporting the professional growth of non-native English teachers.

7. A Functional Analysis of EFL Classroom Talk: The Case of Experience

Abstract: This study investigated EFL classroom talk using Halliday and Matthiessen's (2013) meta-functions framework. Four female participants, including two experienced and two inexperienced teachers, taught similar grammar subjects to their intact classes. Classes were video-recorded and transcribed by the researchers. The meta-functions included topical themes, multiple themes, theme markedness and theme patterning. The results demonstrated differences between the experienced and inexperienced teachers' discourse on the use of simple themes, multiple themes, marked themes, and theme patterning. The total number of simple themes used by the inexperienced teachers was higher than their experienced colleagues, except for the interrogative clauses. However, the experienced teachers used more interpersonal and textual themes. In addition, patterns of theme development were found to be different in discourses of experienced and inexperienced teachers. The researchers concluded that the experienced teachers' talk was more cohesive, elaborated, and systematic. Moreover, it was shown that experience can play an important role in shaping language teachers' talk and theme/rheme distinction can be used as an effective tool to investigate the nature of it. Several implications concerning various stakeholders are provided at the end.

8. Examining Coping Strategies and Academic Resilience among Indonesian Students: The Role of Gender and Domicile

Abstract: This study investigates the influence of coping strategies (problem-solving, emotion-focused, purpose-oriented) on academic resilience, considering gender and domicile differences. By analyzing data from 398 Indonesian students using MGA PLS-SEM, the study confirms satisfactory validity and reliability of the measurement models. The results reveal significant relationships between coping strategies and academic resilience. The study contributes to understanding the interplay between coping strategies and academic resilience across diverse groups, informing the development of targeted interventions and support systems for student well-being and success.

9. Psychological Distress and Associated Factors among Elementary School Teachers: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract: Background: Teachers can face demanding and stressful working conditions. Classroom environments in elementary schools are dynamic and challenging, which can be mentally and emotionally exhausting for teachers. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of psychological distress and identify associated factors among elementary school teachers. Methods: This is an analytical, observational cross-sectional study. The participants consisted of 450 teachers selected using the cluster sampling method from elementary schools of Tabriz, Iran. Multiple regression analysis was performed to examine the associations between teachers' psychological distress and potential factors. Results: The study found a significant proportion of participants (54.2%) experiencing psychological distress. Multiple regression analysis revealed age, sex, work experience, school type, family income status, teachers' efficacy, emotional labor, and presenteeism were statistically associated with teachers' psychological distress. Implications for School Health Policy, Practice, and Equity: To address teachers' psychological distress, schools need to adopt policies that promote teacher well-being and mental health support. Conclusion: The high prevalence of psychological distress among elementary school teachers raises concerns and highlights the need for attention. Schools and administrators must provide teachers with the resources and support they need to succeed in their roles. Interventions targeting the identified associated factors must be planned to improve the mental health of elementary school teachers and enhance their overall performance.

10. Students' Online Cheating Reasons and Strategies: EFL Teachers' Strategies to Abolish Cheating in Online Examinations

Abstract: The current study aimed to explore effective strategies for preventing cheating in online examinations by surveying students to determine their cheating strategies. A total of 406 Iranian students at BA, MA, and PhD levels in four programs, including English language teaching, English literature, Linguistics, and English language translation, participated in this study using a convenient sampling technique. The sample was drawn from 83 universities across all 31 provinces of Iran. The researchers developed a 30-item questionnaire and a 4-item interview to collect data. The results revealed that searching in PDFs and using social media groups were the most commonly used cheating strategies. To prevent this form of academic dishonesty, teachers used various strategies, the most effective being the use of conceptual questions and one-by-one oral exams with turned-on webcams. The main reason for students to cheat was their desire to perform better. The implications of this study are relevant for educational stakeholders, particularly teachers, and students, in promoting academic integrity.

Abstract: We report on the population properties of compact binary mergers inferred from gravitational-wave observations of these systems during the first three LIGO-Virgo observing runs. The Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog 3 (GWTC-3) contains signals consistent with three classes of binary mergers: binary black hole, binary neutron star, and neutron star–black hole mergers. We infer the binary neutron star merger rate to be between 10 and 1700 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1} and the neutron star–black hole merger rate to be between 7.8 and 140 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1}, assuming a constant rate density in the comoving frame and taking the union of 90% credible intervals for methods used in this work. We infer the binary black hole merger rate, allowing for evolution with redshift, to be between 17.9 and 44 Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} at a fiducial redshift (z=0.2). The rate of binary black hole mergers is observed to increase with redshift at a rate proportional to (1+z)^{κ} with κ=2.9_{-1.8}^{+1.7} for z≲1. Using both binary neutron star and neutron star–black hole binaries, we obtain a broad, relatively flat neutron star mass distribution extending from 1.2_{-0.2}^{+0.1} to 2.0_{-0.3}^{+0.3}M_{⊙}. We confidently determine that the merger rate as a function of mass sharply declines after the expected maximum neutron star mass, but cannot yet confirm or rule out the existence of a lower mass gap between neutron stars and black holes. We also find the binary black hole mass distribution has localized over- and underdensities relative to a power-law distribution, with peaks emerging at chirp masses of 8.3_{-0.5}^{+0.3} and 27.9_{-1.8}^{+1.9}M_{⊙}. While we continue to find that the mass distribution of a binary’s more massive component strongly decreases as a function of primary mass, we observe no evidence of a strongly suppressed merger rate above approximately 60M_{⊙}, which would indicate the presence of a upper mass gap. Observed black hole spins are small, with half of spin magnitudes below χ_{i}≈0.25. While the majority of spins are preferentially aligned with the orbital angular momentum, we infer evidence of antialigned spins among the binary population. We observe an increase in spin magnitude for systems with more unequal-mass ratio. We also observe evidence of misalignment of spins relative to the orbital angular momentum.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: The Fear of Pain Questionnaire (FOPQ) is a self-report tool designed to measure an individuals fear of pain (FOP). While the Persian version of the FOPQ (FOPQ-P) has been developed, its validity and reliability have not yet been assessed in the Iranian context. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the FOPQ-P among Iranian patients after surgery. METHODS: A methodological study was conducted in 2023 involving 400 post-surgery patients selected with a convenience sampling. The FOPQ was translated into Persian, and its psychometric properties were analyzed using network analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), as well as assessments of convergent and discriminant validity. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbachs alpha, McDonalds Omega, average inter-item correlation coefficient, Composite Reliability, and Maximal Reliability. RESULTS: The EFA results with Promax and Kaiser Normalization rotation identified two factors that explained 54.32% of the variance, comprising seven items. The CFA confirmed the models validity. Both convergent and discriminant validity were established. The reliability analyses showed that Cronbachs alpha, McDonalds omega, composite reliability, and MaxR for all constructs were above 0.7. Additionally, the average inter-item correlation coefficient was greater than 0.5, indicating strong internal consistency and construct reliability. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that the FOPQ-P possesses a valid structure and was acceptable reliability in patients cultural context of Iran post-surgery, making it a suitable instrument for measuring fear of pain in this population.

Abstract: The rapid growth of large-scale spatial gene expression data demands efficient and reliable computational tools to extract major trends of gene expression in their native spatial context. Here, we used stability-driven unsupervised learning (i.e., staNMF) to identify principal patterns (PPs) of 3D gene expression profiles and understand spatial gene distribution and anatomical localization at the whole mouse brain level. Our subsequent spatial correlation analysis systematically compared the PPs to known anatomical regions and ontology from the Allen Mouse Brain Atlas using spatial neighborhoods. We demonstrate that our stable and spatially coherent PPs, whose linear combinations accurately approximate the spatial gene data, are highly correlated with combinations of expert-annotated brain regions. These PPs yield a brain ontology based purely on spatial gene expression. Our PP identification approach outperforms principal component analysis and typical clustering algorithms on the same task. Moreover, we show that the stable PPs reveal marked regional imbalance of brainwide genetic architecture, leading to region-specific marker genes and gene coexpression networks. Our findings highlight the advantages of stability-driven machine learning for plausible biological discovery from dense spatial gene expression data, streamlining tasks that are infeasible by conventional manual approaches.

Abstract: Immuno-oncology is a rapidly evolving field with growing relevance in the treatment of numerous malignancies. The prior study of immunotherapy in dermatologic oncology has largely focused on cutaneous melanoma. However, recent focus has shifted to the use of immunotherapy to treat non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs), such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC), cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), and Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). NMSCs represent the most ubiquitous cancers globally and, while they have a lower propensity to develop into advanced disease than cutaneous melanoma, their absolute mortality burden has recently surpassed that of melanoma. Patients with advanced NMSC are now benefiting from the successes of immunotherapy, including checkpoint inhibition with anti-CTLA-4 and anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibodies. In this review, we discuss the existing clinical evidence for immunotherapy in the treatment of NMSCs, with an emphasis on checkpoint inhibitor therapies. We highlight key studies in the field and provide up-to-date clinical evidence regarding ongoing clinical trials, as well as future study directions. Our review demonstrates that checkpoint inhibitors are positioned to provide unparalleled results in the previously challenging landscape of advanced NMSC treatment.

In Phase 2, we conducted item and exploratory factor analyses to reduce the number of items and assess the factor structure (N = 212; 51.4% female; mean age 48.93 years, SD = 9.45). In Phase 3, we conducted confirmatory factor analyses to verify the initial structure (hold-out sample: N = 210; 56.7% female; mean age 49.20 years, SD = 9.98). 45. Understanding Language Learners' Perceptions of Teachers' Roles in Online Education: A Metaphor Analysis

Abstract: This study investigates language learners' perception of Turkish teachers' roles in an online setting using metaphor analysis. The aim of this qualitative study was to see how learners viewed their teachers' roles in the setting. Using this data collection tool through convenient sampling, this study elicited 161 language learners' perceptions of teachers' role in an online context during the COVID-19 era between December and January 2020. Analyzing the data, the researchers came up with 10 different conceptual metaphors depicting learners' beliefs about their teachers' roles. The results identified some differences between how learners view teachers' roles in an online mode of education compared to the conventional one as other studies suggest. The implications of these findings for teachers in general and language teachers in particular are discussed, highlighting what can be done to cushion the adverse effects of this novel medium of instruction.

To this end, 60 Iranian children, 30 from high and 30 from low socio-economic status, were selected using stratified random sampling. They were divided into four groups based on their background TV exposure and socio-economic status. TOLD-3 was given to the groups as a vocabulary development test before and after a 6-week observation. Results indicated that the high socio-economic-low background group scored higher than the other groups in the vocabulary development posttest while the low socio-economic-low background group scored lower that the other groups. Furthermore, while high background TV had a negative influence on the children's vocabulary development in families with a high socio-economic status, it had a positive influence on the children in families with a low socio-economic status. These results have some implications for families, first and second language studies.

47. Iranian Applied Linguists (Mis) Conceptions of Ethical Issues in Research: A Mixed-Methods Study

Abstract: The present study used quantitative and qualitative measures to examine Iranian applied linguists' (mis-) conceptions of ethical issues in research. For this purpose, one hundred and twelve applied linguists completed a research ethics questionnaire constructed and validated by the researchers. In the follow-up qualitative phase, 15 applied linguists who were faculty members participated in semi-instructed interviews. Data were analyzed using exploratory factors analyses for the first phase and theme analyses for the second phase. Quantitative results showed that the most important misconceptions among Iranian applied linguists lingered on working with data (data collection and data analyses). For example, removing an outlier was a prevalent act conducted by applied linguists in the present study. Teachers using their students as participants of their own research as well as how they treated those students after a study were other controversial issues. The qualitative results revealed several themes including "lack of knowledge, conflict with real-world practices, a product-oriented approach to education and a publish or perish mentality" as the reasons for misconceptions of ethics in applied linguistics among Iranian researchers. On general terms, there was an implicit agreement regarding the lack of training on research ethics among Iranian applied linguists.

48. Beyond Digital Competence and Language Teaching Skills: The Bi-Level Factors Associated with EFL Teachers' 21st-Century Digital Competence to Cultivate 21st-Century Digital Skills

Abstract: In the 21st century, ICT-based teaching has evolved into problem-solving (PS). Therefore, scholars from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) have identified the factors that facilitate such a process in their classes. Therefore, empirical evidence on English language teaching is warranted to uncover what factors shape teachers' professional competence to have such language classes. Thus, putting one step forward, this explanatory study explored the antecedents shaping language teachers' 21st-century digital competence from a bi-level approach. As a result, 863 Iranian EFL teachers who taught English in various areas responded to instruments measuring their ICT-individual characteristics, schools' ICT characteristics, and 21st-century digital competence. The partial least square structural modeling (PLS-SEM) showed that the teachers' connectivity and computer for instruction (CI) in school improved their competence to analyze, browse, and evaluate language learners' problems with it. Regarding their individual aspects, instructors' technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK), information access (IA), and perception of the benefits of ICTs were the main antecedents, leading them to become creative problem-solvers. Having examined the findings, the researcher offers teachers to enhance their approaches beyond teaching language skills with ICT to problem-solving. Curriculum experts should also invest more money and equip their schools with ICTs gadgets, increasing instructors' connectivity and creativity.

49. Cell-cultivated aquatic food products: emerging production systems for seafood.

Abstract: The demand for fish protein continues to increase and currently accounts for 17% of total animal protein consumption by humans. About 90% of marine fish stocks are fished at or above maximum sustainable levels, with aquaculture propagating as one of the fastest growing food sectors to address some of this demand. Cell-cultivated seafood production is an alternative approach to produce nutritionally-complete seafood products to meet the growing demand. This cellular aquaculture approach offers a sustainable, climate resilient and ethical biotechnological approach as an alternative to conventional fishing and fish farming. Additional benefits include reduced antibiotic use and the absence of mercury. Cell-cultivated seafood also provides options for the fortification of fish meat with healthier compositions, such as omega-3 fatty acids and other beneficial nutrients through scaffold, media or cell approaches. This review addresses the biomaterials, production processes, tissue engineering approaches, processing, quality, safety, regulatory, and social aspects of cell-cultivated seafood, encompassing where we are today, as well as the road ahead. The goal is to provide a roadmap for the science and technology required to bring cellular aquaculture forward as a mainstream food source.

50. New GO-based measures in multiple network alignment.

Abstract: MOTIVATION: Protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks provide valuable insights into the function of biological systems. Aligning multiple PPI networks may expose relationships beyond those observable by pairwise comparisons. However, assessing the biological quality of multiple network alignments is a challenging problem. RESULTS: We propose two new measures to evaluate the quality of multiple network alignments using functional information from Gene Ontology (GO) terms. When aligning multiple real PPI networks across species, we observe that both measures are highly correlated with objective quality indicators, such as common orthologs. Additionally, our measures strongly correlate with an alignments ability to predict novel GO annotations, which is a unique advantage over existing GO-based measures.
