Implementing sustainability strategies is essential for the future viability of companies. While companies have been focusing intensively on the operationalization of efficiency and consistency for quite some time, sufficiency approaches are rare. As a result, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of the concept, its inherent potential, as well as a lack of basic implementation concepts for strategies, management systems, and product and process development. Based on a literature review using Scopus and Web of Science according to the PRISMA approach, this paper develops a definition for the concept of industrial sufficiency and presents three general industrial sufficiency strategies (frugality, longevity, and specificity) regarding three distinct business determinants (product, production, and business model). The investigation shows that not only can there be overlaps between the three general sustainability strategies (efficiency, consistency, and sufficiency) but that individual measures are also mutually dependent at different levels. Abstract Background To evaluate the medium and long-term anatomical results of sacrospinous ligament fixation (SLF) and its impact on quality of life (QoL). Methods We conducted a retrospective and observational single centre study. Fifty-nine patients were interviewed using the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory and Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire and underwent physical examination using POP-Q several years after SLF. Primary outcome was the comparison of anatomic results of SLF at medium-term (group 1: 1–5 years after surgery) and long-term (group 2: more than 5 years after surgery). The secondary outcome was QoL evaluation. Results The overall recurrence and complication rates were respectively 22% and 10%, with no significant differences between groups 1 and 2. The recurrence rate was similar in both groups [twelve (35%) in group 1 and nine (20%) in group 2, p = 0.09]. Two patients (12%) in the recurrence and none in the no recurrence group had clinical symptoms (p = 0.08). Two patients (12%) in the recurrence and one patient (2%) in the no-recurrence group had a significant impact on their quality of life (p = 0.12). Conclusion This study showed sustainable anatomic and functional results of SLF in medium and long-term analysis with overall low morbidity.

BackgroundAbsolute uterine factor infertility affects 0. 2% women of childbearing age around the world. Uterine transplantation (UTx) is a promising solution for many of them since the first birth from UTx was described by the Swedish team in 2014. The success of Utx in humans has become possible after a systematic and meticulous approach involving years of research on animal models. To date, more than 80 UTx procedures have been performed worldwide and 30 children were born.Material and MethodThis review summarizes the research preparation conducted in animals before beginning UTx in humans. It focuses on the advantages and limits of each animal model, their place in surgical training, and current contribution in research to improve UTx successes in humans. The different steps in the process of UTx have been analyzed, such as imaging, surgery, ischemia-reperfusion effects, rejection markers, immunosuppressive treatment, and pregnancy.ConclusionAnimal models have played an essential role in the implementation of UTx, which is a highly complex procedure. While respecting the 3R requirements (replacement, refinement, and reduction), the surgical training using large animal models, such as notably ewes remain irreplaceable for teams wishing to initiate a UTx program. Furthermore, animal models are still mandatory in current research to improve the success rates of UTx in humans as well as to reduce the morbidity associated with this experimental infertility treatment.

Departments of Gynecology and Obstetrics, as other departments, were faced with a major challenge at the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fast restructuring was necessary in order to provide the means for COVID-related care. In this article we share our 1-year experience in reshaping our activities, managing healthcare workers and securing a pathway for pregnant patients, including potential, and confirmed COVID-19 cases. Priorities were set on ensuring patients' and healthcare workers' safety. Key containment measures included facemasks, systematic screening, dedicated spaces for COVID-19 cases with reinforced measures and vaccination campaign.

The dissection of the veins is the trickiest step of Uterine transplantation (UTx). Performing the anastomosis of a single uterine vein could bring a therapeutic benefit and simplification of surgery and serve for managing unilateral venous thromboses. The objectives of this project were to evaluate the expression of early markers of ischemia-reperfusion and to compare findings following one or two vein anastomoses. Orthotopic uterine auto-transplantations were performed on an ovine model with anastomosis of either two (group 1) or one utero-ovarian veins (group 2). Blood gases, histology and ischemia- reperfusion markers transcripts (PTGS2, IL6, IL8, SOD2, C3, BAX/BCL2 and TLR4) were analyzed as well as PTGS2 protein expression using Western Blot and fluorescence immunolocalization on endometrial biopsies after 3h of reperfusion. Ten ewes were included in the experimentation, 4 were in group1, 3 in group 2, the others being sham operated controls. No significant differences were observed between the two phenotypes. Based on these results, the anastomosis of one single uterine vein appears to be an approach consistent with short-term graft survival. Further experiments will be needed to confirm the reliability of this approach, especially the long-term follow-up of the uterine graft including its ability to support gestation to term.

Introduction: Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) are costly and can be lifethreatening. Many efforts have been taken to minimize the rates of infection, including sterile technique, pre-packaged sterile kits, site selection, and replacing infected or potentially infected lines. This study aims to identify the incidence of CLABSI following catheter placement in the ED, and to compare rates of CLABSI among ED and ICU placed catheters.Methods: This retrospective chart review was conducted at a Level 1 Trauma Center. Eligibility criteria included patients who had CVC placed in the ED or ICU from January 1st, 2018, through July 31st, 2019 who were 18 years or older.Results: Among 1810 patients with central lines, 1254 met eligibility criteria. There was no significant difference in infection rates when comparing lines placed in the ED (2.5 per 1000 catheter days, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.8 to 5.8) compared to those placed in the ICU (4.6 per 1000 catheter days, 95% CI 3.0 to 6.8). The odds of CLABSI was not associated with age, sex, indication, site, location nor which type of health care professional (HCP) placed the line.Conclusions: In this study, the incidence of infection was no different between lines placed in the ED compared to the ICU. We propose a device that allows for the emission of pairs of spin-polarized electrons into the edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator. Charge and spin emission is achieved using a periodically driven quantum dot weakly coupled to the edge states of the host topological insulator. We present calculations of the emitted time-dependent charge and spin currents of such a dynamical scatterer using the Floquet scattering matrix approach. Experimental signatures of spin-polarized two-particle emission can be found in noise measurements. Here a new form of noise suppression, named Z2 antibunching, is introduced. Additionally, we propose a setup in which entanglement of the emitted electrons is generated. It is well established that topological insulators sustain Dirac fermion surface states as a consequence of band inversion in the bulk. These states have a helical spin polarization and a linear dispersion with large Fermi velocity. We report on a set of experimental observations supporting the existence of additional massive surface states. These states are also confined by the band inversion at a topological-trivial semiconductor heterojunction. While first introduced by Volkov and Pankratov (VP) before the understanding of the topological nature of such a junction, they were not experimentally identified. Here we identify their signatures on transport properties at high electric field. By monitoring the ac admittance of HgTe topological-insulator field-effect capacitors, we access the compressibility and conductivity of surface states in a broad range of energies and electric fields. The Dirac states are characterized by a compressibility minimum, a linear energy dependence, and a high mobility persisting up to energies much larger than the transport band gap of the bulk. At higher energies, we observe multiple anomalous behaviors in conductance, charge metastability, and Hall resistance that point towards the contribution of massive surface states in transport scattering and charge transfer to the bulk. The spectrum of these anomalies agrees with predictions of a phenomenological model of VP states in a smooth topological heterojunction. The model accounts for the finite interface depth, the effect of electric fields including Dirac screening, and predicts the energy of the first VP state. The massive surface states are a hallmark of topological heterojunctions, whose understanding is crucial for transport studies and applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We show that a smooth interface between two insulators of opposite topological Z2 indices possesses multiple surface states, both massless and massive. While the massless surface state is nondegenerate, chiral and insensitive to the interface potential, the massive surface states only appear for a sufficiently smooth heterojunction. The surface states are particle-hole symmetric and a voltage drop reveals their intrinsic relativistic nature, similarly to Landau bands of Dirac electrons in a magnetic field. We discuss the relevance of the massive Dirac surface states in recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and transport experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
