Background: The growth of online higher education programs and the increasing numbers of students seeking remote learning experiences require educators to find new ways of meeting the changing learning needs of their students. One possible approach for facilitating success for online college students is fostering engagement in self-regulated learning (SRL). Objective: This paper discusses student perceptions of an online metacognitive journal assignment designed to promote SRL. Method: Following a brief review of the related literature, we present a study of the perceptions of 206 online students of a series of metacognitive prompts collected through a weekly online journaling assignment. We examined, coded, and reported on the data using descriptive statistics. We also conducted a thematic qualitative analysis of narrative responses to experiential questions. Results: The analysis revealed that the majority of students believed that engaging in the metacognitive exercise was valuable and contributed to success in their online courses. The students also reported that the assignment helped them feel more connected to their professors and contributed to their ability to apply course content to real-life situations. Findings: The students did perceive value in the assignment and provided positive narrative comments. Although the students perceived the assignment to be helpful, no causal relationships between engagement with the assignment and student achievement were demonstrated. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, online instructors may find that using a metacognitive reflection journal is one way to support their students in online courses.

Trauma in early childhood is a significant public health concern. Early childhood education and care (ECEC) services play a critical role in identifying and responding to children impacted by trauma. However, little is known about early childhood professionals' experiences and needs relating to supporting trauma-impacted children. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore early childhood professionals' experiences of working with trauma-impacted children in ECEC, the barriers to adopting trauma-informed approaches, and the organisation-wide shift that is needed to embed them. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 early childhood educators, organisational leaders, and childhood trauma consultants in Victoria, Australia. Thematic analyses revealed that early childhood professionals' perceived increasing prevalence of trauma in children attending ECEC. However, educators are generally unprepared and unsupported for this, and experience many workplace challenges leaving them feeling overwhelmed. This highlighted the need to support the professional development and well-being of early childhood educators. Meanwhile, the study identified systemic barriers impeding the implementation of trauma-informed approaches within ECEC. The findings also suggest that the collective efforts "starting from the top", with everyone engaged, coupled with cross-sector collaboration is needed for meaningful, trauma-informed organisational change within ECEC.

Autism has been associated with increased mortality risk among adult populations, but little is known about the mortality risk among children and young people (0-24 years). We used a 15-year nationwide birth cohort study using linked health and non-health administrative data to estimate the mortality risk among Autistic children and young people in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Time-to-event analysis was used to determine the association between autism and mortality, controlling for sex, age, ethnicity, deprivation and rurality of residence. The participant population included 895,707 children of whom 11,919 (1.4%) were identified as Autistic. Autism was associated with a significantly higher mortality risk (hazard ratio = 2.35; 95% confidence interval = 1.80-3.06) compared to the general population. In addition, using stratified analyses, we found that this risk was significantly higher among females (hazard ratio = 5.40; 95% confidence interval = 3.42-8.52) compared to males (hazard ratio = 1.82; 95% confidence int

Whole genome sequences (WGS) enable discovery of rare variants which may contribute to missing heritability of coronary artery disease (CAD). To measure their contribution, we apply the GREML-LDMS-I approach to WGS of 4949 cases and 17,494 controls of European ancestry from the NHLBI TOPMed program. We estimate CAD heritability at 34.3% assuming a prevalence of 8.2%. Ultra-rare (minor allele frequency ≤ 0.1%) variants with low linkage disequilibrium (LD) score contribute ~50% of the heritability. We also investigate CAD heritability enrichment using a diverse set of functional annotations: i) constraint; ii) predicted protein-altering impact; iii) cis-regulatory elements from a cell-specific chromatin atlas of the human coronary; and iv) annotation principal components representing a wide range of functional processes. We observe marked enrichment of CAD heritability for most functional annotations. These results reveal the predominant role of ultra-rare variants in low LD on the heritability of CAD. Moreover, they highlight several functional processes including cell type-specific regulatory mechanisms as key drivers of CAD genetic risk.

In the modern "omics" era, measurement of the human exposome is a critical missing link between genetic drivers and disease outcomes. High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), routinely used in proteomics and metabolomics, has emerged as a leading technology to broadly profile chemical exposure agents and related biomolecules for accurate mass measurement, high sensitivity, rapid data acquisition, and increased resolution of chemical space. Non-targeted approaches are increasingly accessible, supporting a shift from conventional hypothesis-driven, quantitation-centric targeted analyses toward data-driven, hypothesis-generating chemical exposome-wide profiling. However, HRMS-based exposomics encounters unique challenges. New analytical and computational infrastructures are needed to expand the analysis coverage through streamlined, scalable, and harmonized workflows and data pipelines that permit longitudinal chemical exposome tracking, retrospective validation, and multi-omics integration for meaningful health-oriented inferences. In this article, we survey the literature on state-of-the-art HRMS-based technologies, review current analytical workflows and informatic pipelines, and provide an up-to-date reference on exposomic approaches for chemists, toxicologists, epidemiologists, care providers, and stakeholders in health sciences and medicine. We propose efforts to benchmark fit-for-purpose platforms for expanding coverage of chemical space, including gas/liquid chromatography-HRMS (GC-HRMS and LC-HRMS), and discuss opportunities, challenges, and strategies to advance the burgeoning field of the exposome.

Studies have found early detection of autism is protective for an individual and their family. Fewer Pacific children are diagnosed with autism compared with non-Pacific children, and those who have significantly higher needs, suggesting an undercount of those diagnosed. The purpose of this study was to explore any association between parental education and autism in Pacific children living in Aotearoa, New Zealand. This was a national cross-sectional study using data from New Zealand's Integrated Data Infrastructure, including Pacific and non-Maori non-Pacific children in the 2013 Census. A novel method was employed to capture autism, while years of parents' education was estimated from their highest attained qualification level. Apposite regression models were used to analyse the relationship between parental education and autism. We found that autism was identified in 1.1% of Pacific children compared with 1.6% of non-Maori, non-Pacific children. A year of education among parents of Pacific children was associated with increased identification of autism (odds ratio = 1.10; 95% confidence interval = 1.06-1.15). The findings show education plays a positive role in receiving a diagnosis for Pacific autistic children but suggest a systemic failure to support Pacific parents to navigate existing health systems for themselves or their children.

Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) services are critical points of intervention for children impacted by trauma. Intervention Mapping was utilised to develop an initiative for trauma-informed organisational change in ECEC. This paper describes how the research team understood the need and opportunity for the program using Intervention Mapping Step 1. This included: (i) convening a planning group, (ii) conducting needs assessment, (iii) describing the context for intervention, and (iv) establishing program goals. Benefits, challenges, and recommendations on using Intervention Mapping for program development in ECEC settings are discussed.

Electrification to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions is essential to mitigate climate change. However, a substantial portion of our manufacturing and transportation infrastructure will be difficult to electrify and/or will continue to use carbon as a key component, including areas in aviation, heavy-duty and marine transportation, and the chemical industry. In this Roadmap, we explore how multidisciplinary approaches will enable us to close the carbon cycle and create a circular economy by defossilizing these difficult-to-electrify areas and those that will continue to need carbon. We discuss two approaches for this: developing carbon alternatives and improving our ability to reuse carbon, enabled by separations. Furthermore, we posit that co-design and use-driven fundamental science are essential to reach aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets.

Natural conversion of ferrihydrite (Fh), a widespread Fe(iii)-oxyhydroxide mineral at the Earth's surface, to thermodynamically more stable iron oxides such as goethite (Gt) and hematite (Hm) is a slow process that spans months to years. Here we examined the effects of synthesis and storage conditions on the hydration, the ratio of tetrahedral to octahedral iron sites, and the transformation of naturally aged 2-line Fh at room temperature and mildly acidic pH over an ageing period of 5 years. Fh samples synthesized and aged in either aerobic or anaerobic conditions were characterized over time by XRD, SEM, thermogravimetric analysis - mass spectroscopy (TGA-MS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopies (XANES and XMCD). The findings show that the ratio of tetrahedral to octahedral Fe(iii) sites in Fh is correlated to its extent of hydration, with fresher Fh samples exhibiting a higher ratio and more bound water. Fresh Fh aged in aerobic conditions has similar bound inorganic carbon, is more hydrated, and has less tetrahedral Fe(iii) than that aged in anaerobic conditions. Hence, for relatively fresh Fh there is a link between Fh properties and storage conditions. However, the long-term ageing characteristics, such as the transformation rate and relative phase fraction of Gt and Hm products, are not noticeably impacted by storage conditions. TGA-MS measurements coupled with O K-edge XANES spectra confirm that Fh tends to lose its hydration as it ages, as expected. Corresponding Fe L2,3-edge XMCD spectra reveal that this dehydration is coupled to a steady decrease in the ratio of tetrahedral to octahedral Fe(iii) sites. In addition to the obvious constraints these findings place on making comparisons across Fh samples of different age and environmental settings, they also highlight that Fh structure, and consequently magnetism, are linked to its bound water content.

The properties of laser signals are affected by deformation of the optical fibre through which they are transmitted. While this deformation dependence is undesirable in telecommunication, it can be exploited for the construction of novel seismic sensors that fill a niche in data acquisition where traditional seismometer arrays would be difficult to deploy. This includes densely populated urban centers, the oceans, volcanoes and the Earth’s polar regions. These notes complement a presentation on recent methodological developments and applications in fibre-optic seismology. The first part is focused on the use of distributed fibre-optic sensing in cryosphere research, and specifically the investigation of the internal structure and seismicity of glaciers and ice sheets. The second part is dedicated to recent advances in integrated fibre-optic sensing, with emphasis on novel measurement principles and sensitivity.

Abstract Directed evolution (DE) is a powerful tool to optimize protein fitness for a specific application. However, DE can be inefficient when mutations exhibit non-additive, or epistatic, behavior. Here, we present Active Learning-assisted Directed Evolution (ALDE), an iterative machine learning-assisted DE workflow that leverages uncertainty quantification to explore the search space of proteins more efficiently than current DE methods. We apply ALDE to an engineering landscape that is challenging for DE: optimization of five epistatic residues in the active site of an enzyme. In three rounds of wet-lab experimentation, we improve the yield of a desired product of a non-native cyclopropanation reaction from 12% to 93%. We also perform computational simulations on existing protein sequence-fitness datasets to support our argument that ALDE can be more effective than DE. Overall, ALDE is a practical and broadly applicable strategy to unlock improved protein engineering outcomes.

Although experimental evaluations have been labeled the "gold standard" of evidence for policy (U.S. Department of Education, 2003), evaluations without an analysis of costs are not sufficient for policymaking (Monk, 1995; Ross et al., 2007). Funding organizations now require cost-effectiveness data in most evaluations of effects. Yet, there is little guidance on how to integrate research on costs into efficacy or effectiveness evaluations. As a result, research proposals and papers are disjointed in the treatment of costs, implementation, and effects, and studies often miss opportunities to integrate what is learned from the cost component into what is learned about effectiveness. To address this issue, this paper uses common evaluation frameworks to provide guidance for integrating research on costs into the design of field experiments building on the ingredients method (Levin et al., 2018). The goal is to improve study design, resulting in more cohesive, efficient, and higher-quality evaluations.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are the leading cause of disability and health costs in Australia and worldwide yet MSK research funding continues to be substantially lower than other chronic health conditions with similar and even lower overall disease burden. The chronic underfunding of musculoskeletal research has left sufferers frustrated by increasing burden, worsening outcomes, and complete overwhelm. People affected by musculoskeletal conditions often lack support, and certainty of care due to fundamental gaps in research and slow or no implementation of new research. Despite chronic underfunding, Australian-led research has delivered practice-changing outcomes to patients, clinicians, and policymakers, but we need to do more. Australia has the research and clinical workforce and skills to be worth investing in. We point to The Global Strategic Framework quoted from Briggs et al 2021, pp e006045 as a way forward.
