The present paper deals with holoplanktonic gastropods (Pteropoda) from the Middle Miocene (Badenian) deposits of Serbia. The material for the present study comes from three localities at the southern margin of the Pannonian Basin (Central Paratethys): Konjarnik (greater center of Belgra de), Sumijevac stream near Koceljeva (western Serbia), and Radljevo (Kolubara Basin, central Serbia). A total of four taxa were recorded and their stratigraphic value is discussed. Two taxa were identified to species level: Vaginella austriaca KITTL, 1886, belonging to the family Cavoliniidae GRAY, 1850 (1815), and Limacina valvatina (REUSS, 1867)?, from the family Limacinidae GRAY, 1847. Four specimens could only be identified to genus level (Vaginella sp. indet. and Clio? sp. indet.). The specimen of Clio? sp. indet. is possibly the first find of the genus Clio in Serbia. Here presented records of the genera Vaginella and Clio? from the late Badenian (NN6 nannozone) modify the insight into their paleogeographical distribution in the Middle Miocene of the Central Paratethys.

Belgrade area is a region of high paleobiodiversity, being ranked among the best known in Serbia. The prominent position among a number of Middle Miocene (Badenian) fossiliferous sites in the vicinity of Belgrade (southern Pannonian Basin, Central Paratethys) are occupied with sediments of Rakovica stream, also known as “Rakovica sands”. Here, the integrated evidence based on new fossil findings of calcareous nannoplankton, foraminifera and molluscs assemblages, allows the stratigraphic revision of the clastic facies of the Rakovica succession. Based on the studies of lithological composition, high paleodiversity molluscs fauna and local palaeogeographical setting, it can be concluded with reasonable certainty that deposits of Rakovica stream entitled “Rakovica sand” represents a sandstone of the shallow marine (littoral) environment during Lower Badenian time. Large benthic foraminifera Ammonia viennensis (d’ORBigny), and Borelis haueri (d’ORBigny) as well as zone marker nn5 Sphaenolithus heteromorphus defLandRe correspond to this biostratigraphic level. during the late early Miocene and Middle Miocene (Badenian), the climate in the Central Paratehys was mainly subtropical. This is supported at its southern margin by the presence of thermophilous mollusc taxa, as well as the Conidae, Strombidae, Xenophoridae, Pleurotomidae, Turridae, Muricidae, etc. Consequently, the investigated deposit can be ascribed to the early Badenian which biostratigraphically corresponds to the nn5 nannozone by correlation with successions in theirs type-areas to the Central Paratethys, and defines preciously the time of the marine transgression in this area.

The formations underlying the Neogene infill of the Vienna Basin are still poorly documented. Until now correlation of subsurface lithostratigraphic units with those of the Rhenodanubian nappe system and the Magura nappe system, outcropping at the basin margins, has been based on extrapolations. A recent drilling campaign in the Bernhardsthal oil field of the northern Vienna Basin in Austria reached the pre-Neogene basement and provided cuttings for biostratigraphic and paleoecological analyses. Based on these data, acquired by using detailed micro- and nanno-paleontological analyses, a Lutetian age (middle Eocene) and a bathyal depositional environment for the Flysch of the Harrersdorf Unit was documented. The lithological similarity of the drilling with the Steinberg Flysch Formation of the Greifenstein Nappe and its Lutetian age suggests, that the middle Eocene part of the Harrersdorf Unit represents a continuation of the Greifenstein Nappe of the Rhenodanubian Flysch, rather than a frontal part of the Rača Nappe of the Magura Flysch as previously thought.

This paper presents the first detailed biostratigraphic investigation of deposits cropping out in stream Sumijevac near Koceljeva (western Serbia). The most important fossil communities and their significance are presented. New biostratigraphic results have been achieved by the study of calcareous nannoplankton, foraminifera and mollusks fauna which clearly indicate the presence of the lower Badenian zone (Lagenid Zone), and defines preciously time of the marine transgression in this area. Further, the revised age of the sedimentary deposits presented here provides the necessary background information for future research of the Badenian sediments of Serbia and neighbouring regions.

The Miocene evolution of the area transitional from the Eastern Alps to the Pannonian Basin System was studied through the paleogeographic evolution of the Slovenj Gradec Basin in northern Slovenia. It is based on mapping, section logging, nannoplankton biostratigraphy, and petrography. The results are correlated with the lithological column of the borehole MD-1/05. The evolution of the basin is connected with the development of the Pannonian Basin System, and the global 3rd order cycles, which influenced the connection with the Mediterranean Sea. Sedimentation started in the Karpatian in a fluvial to lacustrine environment and terminated at the end of the Early Badenian. During this period, three transgression–regression cycles were recorded. The first transgression occurred in the Karpatian and corresponds to the TB 2.2. cycle. The sediments reflect proximity of the hinterland. After a short break in sedimentation, the Early Badenian deposition followed. It marks the second transgression into the SGB, the first Badenian, correlated with the TB 2.3 cycle. There are signs of a transitional environment, which evolved to marine in advanced stages. At the high-stand system tract, the sea flooded the entire Slovenj Gradec Basin. Subsequent reduced quantity and diversity of the microfossils marks the onset of the second regression stage. It is followed by the third transgression, the second in the Badenian, correlated with the TB 2.4 cycle. The late Early Badenian deposition continued in the lower-energy, though occasionally still turbulent environment. Silty sediments with upward increasing content of organic matter indicate shallowing of the basin, until its final diminishing. Layers of fresh-water coal already bear witness to the existence of restricted swamps. After the Early Badenian, the area of the Slovenj Gradec Basin became dry land, exposed to erosion.

Sediments belonging to the Oligocene Vima Formation (located in the north-western part of the Transylvanian Basin, Romania) have been investigated for calcareous nannofossils content. Biostratigraphically, the sedimentary succession is late Rupelian–Chattian in age, belonging to the NP24 — Sphenolithus distentus and NP25 — Sphenolithus ciperoensis biozones, to CP19a — Cyclicargolithus floridanus and CP19b — Reticulofenestra bisecta Subzones and to the interval from CNO4 — Sphenolithus distentus/Sphenolithus predistentus CRZ to CNO5 — Sphenolithus ciperoensis TZ. The palaeoenvironment of the Fântânele section was reconstructed by means of calcareous nannofossils and statistics. Multivariate statistics were applied to the composition of autochthonous assemblages and the obtained clusters were used to assess the palaeoecological preferences of the nannofossils. We document changes from more stable open-marine regime, with temperate sea-surface temperatures interfering locally with influx of cooler water and enriched cool-nutrient supply for the late Rupelian–earliest Chattian (NP24), to shallower and possibly warmer near-shore marine eutrophic environment, with salinity fluctuations, increased terrigenous material run-off and freshwater influx for the remaining early Chattian (NP25).

Massive evaporites were discovered in the Soltvadkert Trough (Great Plain, Hungary) correlating to the Badenian Salinity Crisis (13.8 Ma, Middle Miocene) on the basis of nannoplankton and foraminifera biostratigraphy. This new occurrence from Hungary previously thought to be devoid of evaporites is part of a growing body of evidence of evaporitic basins inside the Carpathian Arc. We suggest the presence of evaporites perhaps in the entire Central Paratethys during the salinity crisis. Different scenarios are suggested for what subsequently happened to these evaporites to explain their presence or absence in the geological record. Where they are present, scenario A suggests that they were preserved in subsiding, deep basins overlain by younger sediments that protected the evaporites from reworking, like in the studied area. Where they are absent, scenario B suggests recycling. Scenario B explains how the supposedly brackish Sarmatian could have been hyper/normal saline locally by providing a source of the excess salt from the reworking and dissolving of BSC halite into seawater. These scenarios suggest a much larger amount of evaporites locked up in the Central Paratethys during the salinity crisis then previously thought, probably contributing to the step-like nature of cooling of the Mid Miocene Climate Transition, the coeval Mi3b.

The depositional environments and hydrocarbon potential of the siliciclastic, clayey and carbonate sediments from the Middle Miocene succession in the Varna-Balchik Depression, located in the south-eastern parts of the Moesian Platform, were studied using core and outcrop samples. Based on the lithology and resistivity log the succession is subdivided from base to top into five units. Siliciclastic sedimentation prevailed in the lower parts of units I and II, whereas their upper parts are dominated by carbonate rocks. Unit III is represented by laminated clays and biodetritic limestone. Units IV and V are represented by aragonitic sediments and biomicritic limestones, correlated with the Upper Miocene Topola and Karvuna Formations, respectively. Biogenic silica in the form of diatom frustules and sponge spicules correlates subunit IIa and unit III to the lower and upper parts of the Middle Miocene Euxinograd Formation. Both (sub)units contain organic carbon contents in the order of 1 to 2 wt. % (median: 0.8 for subunit IIa; 1.3 for unit III), locally up to 4 wt. %. Based on Hydrogen Index values (HI) and alkane distribution pattern, the kerogen is mainly type II in subunit IIa (average HI= 324 mg HC/g TOC) and type III in unit III (average HI ~200 mg HC/g TOC). TOC and Rock Eval data show that subunit IIa holds a fair (to good) hydrocarbon generative potential for oil, whereas the upper 5 m of unit III holds a good (to fair) potential with the possibility to generate gas and minor oil. The rocks of both units are immature in the study area. Generally low sulphur contents are probably due to deposition in environments with reduced salinity. Normal marine conditions are suggested for unit III. Biomarker composition is typical for mixed marine and terrestrial organic matter and suggests deposition in dysoxic to anoxic environments.

Ascidians, or sea squirts, are sac‐like sessile tunicates commonly found in modern seas. Although the oldest ascidians, or at least ascidian‐like tunicates, are mid‐Cambrian in age, the quality of the ascidian fossil record is extraordinarily poor. It mostly consists of isolated finds or low‐diversity assemblages, often represented by mineral spicules. Our study reports the world's most diverse assemblage of ascidian spicules, originating from the Middle Miocene Bogutovo Selo near Ugljevik, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This material includes 31 spicule types, with four assignable to species (Lissoclinum cf. perforatum, Polysyncraton cf. bilobatum, Didemnum cf. vexillum and D. cf. leopardi) and 10 to genera, all belonging to aplousobranchiate ascidians. Comparing our findings with those of two other studies that use modern biological nomenclature, our assemblage shows a closer resemblance to the distant Eocene Australian assemblage than to the Miocene ascidians from Eastern Paratethys. This suggests the persistence of a once‐homogeneous and widely distributed Eocene fauna into the Miocene, while the Eastern Paratethyan basin developed an endemic fauna after the isolation of Eastern Paratethys from the open sea. Some taxa of our assemblage currently inhabit the Mediterranean Sea. The discovery of one species in distant South African waters suggests that tectonic and environmental changes during the Late Miocene, including the closure of the Gibraltar Strait and prior disconnection from the Indian Ocean, may have limited its survival to remote refugia. This study reports elasmobranch remains from two fossil‐rich horizons in the earliest Danian Olching Formation at Waidach, Austria. These outer neritic assemblages complement previous fine‐scale bulk‐sampling of latest Maastrichtian horizons at Waidach and document a regional elasmobranch faunal turnover across the Cretaceous–Palaeogene (K–Pg) boundary. The Danian assemblages show homogeneity in species richness and are dominated by squaliforms. The fauna comprises 16 species belonging to 12 genera including several new taxa (Centrodeania rugosa gen. et sp. nov., Centrodeania annae gen. et sp. nov., Incognitorapax fernsebneri gen. et sp. nov., Scyliorhinus alaformis sp. nov.). Comparison with latest Maastrichtian assemblages from Waidach revealed a marked faunal turnover across the K–Pg boundary associated with an increase in species richness and shift in abundance from Squaliformes to Carcharhiniformes. This is associated with marked environmental changes from a deep marine, dysoxic setting in the Maastrichtian to a more oxygenated, shallower environment in the earliest Danian. The turnover was driven by environmentally induced regional changes in species geographic ranges. High diversity in the Danian fauna suggests that the habitability of the corresponding palaeoenvironment was preserved or recovered immediately after the K–Pg event. Comparison with other elasmobranch assemblages across the K–Pg boundary highlights a strong control of local palaeoenvironmental settings over the timing and magnitude of the turnover. Our study emphasizes the importance of successive sampling to disentangle local from general patterns of faunal turnover during the K–Pg event and to better assess the consequences of this extinction event over elasmobranch diversity. The 2200 m thick Cretaceous units of well Gänserndorf UeT3 have been biostratigraphically analyzed based on cuttings from 3210 m to 5140 m. The deposits from the Tirolic Glinzendorf Syncline (a part of the buried Northern Calcareous Alps) can be largely correlated with the Lower Gosau Subgroup of the Grünbach Syncline. An exception is the basal unit, which has no equivalent in the Grünbach Syncline. This lower unit is subdivided into a non-marine lower and a largely marine upper part. No age constraints are available for the lower part, whereas the upper part has a possible age range from middle Turonian to Coniacian. For this unit, which is documented for the first time from the Glinzendorf Syncline, we propose Glinzendorf Formation as new lithostratigraphic term. The Glinzendorf Fm. is overlain by the Grünbach Fm., which is intercalated by a thick unit of conglomerates. These are interpreted as equivalents of the Dreistetten Conglomerate Mb. The calcareous nannofossils of these units suggest a latest Santonian to early Campanian age. Non-marine conditions prevailed during deposition of the Grünbach Fm., but marine incursions are indicated for parts of the Dreistetten Conglomerate Mb. The top of the Grünbach Fm. is formed by an about 50-m-thick unit of coal, rich in Characeae oogonia, which, together with the Dreistetten conglomerates serve as marker layer for correlation with the outcrops in the Grünbach Syncline. The Grünbach Fm. is overlain by marls and silty shales of the Piesting Fm. for which a late Campanian and Maastrichtian age is documented. Marine conditions predominated during this interval. The topmost unit in well Gänserndorf UeT3 is overthrusted on the Maastrichtian Piesting Fm. and represents Campanian sandstones and conglomerates of the Grünbach Fm. This paper focuses mainly on the representatives of calcareous nannofossils and invertebrates from the Hrvaćani section of the Middle Miocene (Badenian) (Prnjavor Basin, southern margin of Pannonian Basin), and it defines the time of Badenian transgression in this area. Rich resources of fossil mollusk species, isolated parts of coral colonies, and other invertebrate remains were found in the investigated section. Moreover, turtle remains from marine sediments at the southern margin of Central Paratethys were recorded for the first time. Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy has established an NN5 Zone by the presence of Sphenolithus heteromorphus and the absence of Helicosphaera ampliaperta. The foraminifera associations from the analyzed sandstones belong to the Lower Badenian, namely the older zones of Ammonia viennensis and Elphidium crispum (the equivalent of Lagenidae Zone of Vienna Basin). The specimen of a turtle is currently attributed to order Testudines (suborder Pleurodira). From a stratigraphic and paleoecological point of view, all the fossil assemblages showed similar patterns for the subject of study, reflecting favorable conditions for developing a subtropical fauna in the open shallow marine environment. Consequently, by combining nannofossils, foraminifers, corals, malacological, and herpetological data, we can conclude that the early Middle Miocene (Badenian) in Hrvaćani (Bosnia) corresponds to the Lagenidae Zone (NN5 Zone) and was characterized by a relatively warm climate. The Cenozoic genus Terebratula seems to be an exception to the post-Permian trend in brachiopod retreat to offshore habitats, because it was species rich and numerically abundant in warm-temperate shallow-water environments in the Mediterranean and the Paratethys realms. This was so despite the general dominance of bivalves and the pervasive bioturbation and predation pressure during the Neogene. Terebratula, however, went extinct in the Calabrian (Pleistocene). The optimal environmental conditions for Terebratula during its prime are poorly known. The Águilas Basin (SE Spain) is an ideal study area to investigate the habitat of Terebratula, because shell beds of this brachiopod occur there cyclically in early Pliocene deposits. We evaluate the paleoecological boundary conditions controlling the distribution of Terebratula by estimating its environmental tolerances using benthic and planktic foraminiferal and nannoplanktic assemblages and oxygen isotopes of the secondary layer brachiopod calcite. Our results suggest that Terebratula in the Águilas Basin favored oligotrophic to mesotrophic, well-oxygenated environments at water depths of 60–90 m. Planktic foraminiferal assemblages and oxygen isotopes point to sea-surface temperatures between ~16°C and 22°C, and bottom-water temperatures between 17°C and 24°C. The analyzed proxies indicate that Terebratula tolerated local variations in water depth, bottom temperature, oxygenation, productivity, and organic enrichment. Terebratula was probably excluded by grazing pressure from well-lit environments and preferentially occupied sediment-starved, current-swept upper offshore habitats where coralline red algae were absent. Narrow temperature ranges of Terebratula species might have been a disadvantage during the high-amplitude seawater temperature fluctuations that started about 1 Ma, when the genus went extinct. The biostratigraphy and paleoenvironments of the İhsaniye Formation exposed at Karaburun in northwest Turkey is described based upon the study of abundant and well-preserved foraminifera, calcareous nannofossils and palynomorphs. The studied succession is Early Oligocene in age, with calcareous nannofossil zones upper NP21 (Subzone CNO1) to lower NP23 (Subzone CNO3) and planktonic foraminifera zones O1 (~P18) and O2 (~P19) represented, and palynological assemblages suggestive of zones D13 to D14a. Based on these new data, a revised interpretation of the stratigraphic succession is presented. Deposition was controlled by a now inverted normal fault, with deposition of older stratigraphy (upper NP21 to NP22) restricted to the original hanging wall. During NP23, deposition commenced on the footwall, resulting in progressive onlap of an exposed Eocene reefal limestone (Soğucak Formation). Three primary sedimentary facies are present: marls with thin calcareous siltstones, marls with synsedimentary slumps and debris flows, and coarse pebbly sandstones. The coarse pebbly sandstones were deposited in a fan-delta/shoreface paleoenvironment and represent the initial phase of onlap during biozone NP23 onto a rocky shoreline on the footwall side of the fault. The marl-dominated facies represent deposition in outer shelf-upper bathyal environments. The succession demonstrates evidence for a near-end Eocene relative sea-level fall. Changes in the abundance of planktonic foraminifera and the onlap onto the footwall demonstrate maximum subsequent transgression within NP23. This reflects eustasy rather than Paratethyan relative sea-level. No interpretation of sea-water salinity reduction can be made for the sediments deposited during biozone NP23 in the studied sections, although this is noted in coeval sediments in parts of Paratethys (the "Solenovian Event"). Together with the open marine nature of the diverse and abundant fossil assemblages, it is suggested that deposition of the Karaburun section was strongly influenced by a connection to the global ocean, via the Çatalca Gap, as suggested in a recent study. The Oligocene Ruslar Formation, an equivalent of the Maykop Suite, is a potential hydrocarbon source rock in the western Black Sea Basin. In contrast to the offshore areas, the depositional environment and hydrocarbon source rock potential of onshore Bulgaria sediments are largely unknown. Hence, a 14-m-thick section of the Ruslar Formation, exposed near Karadere (Black Cape) along the Black Sea coast, provides an excellent opportunity to study the upper part of the Ruslar Formation. Here, laminated diatomrich mudstones with frequent thin sandstone beds and a prominent concretion horizon are exposed. Furthermore, the fossil diatom assemblages provide a key component to understand the paleoenvironment. Overall, Paleogene diatoms are understudied in the Black Sea Basin and therefore only a genus-level study is undertaken here. The studied Ruslar Formation contain remarkably diverse and wellpreserved diatom assemblage with 23 different genera. The most frequent genera are Paralia, Distephanosira, and Stephanopyxis. Common genera include Coscinodiscus, Hemiaulus, Pseudopodosira, Rouxia, and Xanthiopyxis. Rare taxa include Actinoptychus, Asterolampra, Azpeitia, Delphineis, Distephanosira, Diploneis, Eunotogramma, Eurossia, Lyrella, Liradiscus, Plagiogramma, Radialiplicata, Rutilaria, Saeptifera, and Triceratium. The diatom assemblages together with calcareous nannoplankton, silicoflagellates, and the presence of rare foraminifera indicate a fully marine neritic environment without major salinity variations. The calcareous nannoplankton investigated can be assigned to biozone NP23 (Early Oligocene). The exposed fragment of the Ruslar Formation was deposited after the low salinity "Solenovian event", which represents the maximum isolation of the Paratethys present in the lower part of the NP23. Bulk geochemical parameters from 35 samples (avg. TOC: 1.80% wt.; avg. HI: 226 mg HC/g TOC) show that the exposed part of the Ruslar Formation contains type II-III kerogen and a fair to good hydrocarbon potential. The Ruslar Formation is immature (avg. Tmax: 424 °C), but may generate about 0.5 tons of hydrocarbons per square meter if mature. Biomarker proxies support the low maturity and are characterized by diatom-related biomarkers (24-norcholestane; C25HBI alkanes and thiophenes). Land-plant-derived biomarkers suggest a significant input of angiosperms. Based on biomarker ratios, the depositional environment was oxygen-depleted but probably not strictly anoxic. Reworking of biomass by chemoautotrophic bacteria is suggested by the presence of 28,30-bisnorhopane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantitative and semi-quantitative analyses of calcareous nannofossils were performed on samples collected from Bozdovec Section (Albanian-Thessalian intramontane basin, Albania). The calcareous nannofossil assemblages are dominated by: small reticulofenestrids, Cycligargolithus floridanus, Coccolithus pelagicus, Sphenolithus spp., Reticulofenestra scrippsae, Helicosphaera spp., Clausicoccus spp., Reticulofenestra bisecta, Cycligargolithus abisectus. Biostratigraphically, the studied outcrop is assigned to the Late Oligocene NP25 - Sphenolithus ciperoensis Zone. In the Mediterranean area, this interval can be correlated with the MNP25a - Sphenolithus ciperoensis Zone, while according to the zonation for low to middle latitudes the investigated material would belong to the CNO5 - Sphenolithus ciperoensis TZ. High amounts of small reticulofenestrids and sphenoliths point to warm well stratified paleoenvironment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new and precisely defined chronometric subdivision of the Badenian (Middle Miocene, regional stage of Central Paratethys) is proposed. This uses global events, mainly geomagnetic polarity reversals as correlated chronometric boundaries, supported by climatic and sea-level changes in addition to isotope events and biostratigraphic data. The Karpatian/ Badenian boundary lies at 16.303 Ma, at the top of Chron C5Cn.2n, which is near the base of the Praeorbulina sicana Lowest-occurrence Zone (LOZ). The Badenian/Sarmatian boundary is placed at the top of polarity Chron C5Ar.2n, thus at 12.829 Ma. In relation to three sea level cycles TB 2.3, TB 2.4 and TB 2.5 and astronomically confirmed data, the Badenian can be divided into three parts of nearly equivalent duration. The Early Badenian as newly defined here ranges from 16.303 to 15.032 Ma (top of polarity Chron C5Bn.2n). The younger boundary correlates roughly to the base of the planktonic foraminifera Orbulina suturalis LOZ at 15.10 Ma, the HO (Highest Occurrence) of the nannofossil Helicosphaera ampliaperta at 14.91 Ma (NN4/NN5 boundary) and the Lan2/Ser1 sequence boundary at 14.80 Ma. The subsequent Mid Badenian ranges from 15.032 Ma to 13.82 Ma; the latter datum correlates with the base of the Serravallian, characterized by a strong global cooling event reflected in the oxygen isotope event Mi3b. The main part of cycle TB 2.4 falls into the Mid Badenian, which can be subdivided by a short cooling event at 14.24 Ma during the Middle Miocene Climate Transition (14.70 to 13.82 Ma). The HCO (Highest common occurrence) of the nannofossil Helicosphaera waltrans at 14.357 Ma supports this division, also seen in the tropical plankton Zones M6 Orbulina suturalis LOZ and M7 Fohsella peripheroacuta LOZ that correspond roughly to the lower and upper Lagenidae zones in the Vienna Basin, respectively. The Late Badenian is delimited in time at the base to 13.82 Ma by the Langhian/Serravallian boundary and at the top by the top of polarity Chron C5Ar.2n at 12.829 Ma. The Mediterranean Langhian/Serravallian boundary can be equated with the Mid/Late Badenian boundary at 13.82 Ma. The northern Tethyan margin is a key region for determining environmental changes associated with the collision of continental and oceanic tectonic plates and Alpine orogeny. Herein we investigated Middle to Late Eocene neritic to bathyal sediments deposited during an interval of unstable climatic conditions. In order to quantify paleoenvironmental changes, we developed a detailed age model based on biozonations of planktic foraminifera, calcareous nannoplankton, and larger benthic foraminifera. The section at Adelholzen covers the almost complete Lutetian Stage (calcareous nannoplankton zones NP15a-16, planktic foraminifera zones E8-11, shallow benthic (foraminifera) zones SBZ13-15) and large parts of the Priabonian Stage (NP18-20, E14/15), while the intermediate Bartonian Stage (NP17) is completely missing. Foraminiferal, calcareous nannoplankton, and macrofossil assemblages were analyzed for changes in paleo-water depth, mixing and stratification, paleo-primary productivity (pPP), food supply, and bottom water oxygenation. Paleo-water depth estimates range from 50 m (middle neritic, early Lutetian) to nearly 500 m (upper bathyal, late Priabonian). The combination of assemblage composition, planktic and benthic foraminiferal accumulation rates, and derived parameters (carbon-flux to sea floor, pPP) enabled us to identify a series of distinct paleoceanographic events of at least regional significance. Such events are characterized by considerable changes in primary productivity or reduced bottom water ventilation. Calculated pPP-values indicate oligotrophic conditions throughout. Reuter, M., Piller, W.E., Harzhauser, M., Kroh, A., Rögl, F. & Ćorić, S. 2010: The Quilon Limestone, Kerala Basin, India: an archive for Miocene Indo-Pacific seagrass beds. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 76-86. The facies of the fossiliferous Quilon Limestone in SW India is described for the first time in detail at the Padappakkara-type locality. Facies (fossiliferous, micrite-rich, bioturbated sediment with intercalated sand pockets) and faunal composition (epiphytic foraminifers, seagrass feeding Smaragdia gastropods, bioimmuration of celleporiform bryozoan colonies) indicate a seagrass environment. The large discoidal archaiasin foraminifer Pseudotaberina malabarica, in particular, is considered as a proxy for seagrass communities. Recent seagrasses have their centre of generic richness in the Indo-Pacific where they cover wide areas in the tidal and shallow sub-tidal zones. However, their geological record is only fragmentary and their palaeobiogeographic distribution has a big stratigraphical gap in the Miocene Western Indo-Pacific region. The described nannoplankton flora and planktonic foraminifers from the Quilon Formation demonstrate that the deposition of the studied seagrass bed occurred in nannoplankton biozone NN3. This timing suggests formation during the closure of the Tethyan Seaway. In the North Croatian Basin which is located in the southwestern part of the Pannonian Basin System, Miocene tuff deposits have been observed at several localities in the area of Banovina, Medvednica Mt. and Slavonia. Here we present new 40Ar/39Ar age results obtained from volcanic glass from the Laz tuff (15.42 ± 0.15 Ma) intercalated with lacustrine freshwater/brackish deposits, the Jovac tuff (15.10 ± 0.06 Ma) intercalated with lacustrine freshwater deposits, the Čučerje tuff (14.81 ± 0.08 Ma) and the Nježić tuff (14.40 ± 0.03 Ma) both deposited in a marine environment. Fossil data (calcareous nannofossils/foraminifera) from the underlying and overlying beds of the tuffs from Čučerje and Nježić match the geochronological data i.e. NN5 zone and M6 zone were determined. Integration of biostratigraphic and geochronological data enable a better understanding of the NCB sedimentary evolution and constrain the Middle Miocene marine flooding event in the marginal areas of the western part of the NCB at ~15 Ma i.e. early/middle Badenian boundary. These results together with the existence of lower Badenian marine sediments in the Sava depression (in the southern part of NCB) suggest it is possible to conclude that during the early Badenian in the NCB, freshwater lacustrine and marine environments coexisted. During 2008. in the deposit of rock salt Tetima four exploratory boreholes: B-72, B-73, B-81 and B- 91 have been done. Sediments of the roof of salt formations have been drilled without coring and salt formation has been drilled with coring. Micropalaeontology sediments samples were taken from the sieve and the core drilling at the distance of 1-5 m. The main goal of the micropaleontologic research was to make biostratigraphic analysis of the salt roof and an attempt to define a new stratigraphic levels. On the basis of foraminifera it was defined the lower Badenian, which is divided into two local foraminiferal zones. The older part of the lower Badenian is presented by Ammonia viennensis and Nonion commune and the younger part of the lower Badenian makes the zone of Globigerinoides trilobus and Orbulina suturalis. These zones correspond to Lagenid zone of the Vienna basin. Within these zones the two new bench mark stratigraphic levels have been separated. The first is the immediate roof of salt formation and has a thickness of about 3 m, and the second level is 60-70 m above the salt formation and has a thickness of about 10 m. The first mark stratigraphic level is characterized by an extremely rare, dominantly planktonic foraminifera and lack of zoning type of Ammonia viennensis (d' ORBIGNY). The Second mark stratigraphic level is indicated by the presence of species Uvigerina macrocarinata PAPP & TURNOVSKY which is in the Central Paratethys related exclusively to the lower Badenian. This species on Tetima is represented in the boundary sediments of isolated foraminiferal zones. In laminated and thinly stratified dolomicrite of immediate substratum of rock salt some very rare foraminifera predominantly planktonic forms Globigerina praebulloides BLOW and Globigerina bulloides d ‘ORBIGNY have been found. Discovery of foraminifera in salt formation has confirmed the hypothesis about lagoon genesis and lower Badenian age of rock salt in Tuzla basin. The immediate roof of salt formation is presented with massive marls thickness of 65-80 m. About 3 m above the salt formation species Ammonia viennensis (d ‘ORBIGNY) emerges with the species Nonion commune (d ‘ORBIGNY) which together have the highest frequency and abundance in massive marls. It is interesting that shells of species Ammonia viennensis (d ‘ORBIGNY) are of orange colour and about three times larger than those in the upper Badenian. Above massive marls there are marls with interbeds of sandstones. These sediments with local foraminiferal zone Globigerinoides trilobus and Orbulina suturalis have a thickness of 220-242 m. Based on nannoplankton it was determined that the zone Ammonia viennensis and Nonion commune corresponds to zone NN5 (Sphenolithus heteromorphus zone by Martini, 1971), while zone Globigerinoides trilobus and Orbulina suturalis corresponds to upper part of zone NN5 and lower part of NN6 zone (Discoaster exilis zone by Martini, 1971).
