As industrial and agricultural activities intensify and technology rapidly advances, soil pollution has escalated to alarming levels. The increasing contamination of agricultural areas and the crops cultivated therein has emerged as a significant contemporary issue. Phytoremediation, the use of plants to remove pollutants, is a promising method for mitigating soil heavy metal contamination. This study investigates the bioaccumulation capacity of purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.), a potential phytoremediator, in soils artificially contaminated with cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), and copper (Cu). The purslane was cultivated under controlled conditions with varying doses of Cd, Ni, and Cu. After 55 days, the plants were harvested and analysed for heavy metal concentrations in their roots, stems, and leaves. The results demonstrated a direct correlation between environmental heavy metal concentration and plant heavy metal content, with the most significant accumulation occurring in the roots. The leaf chlorophyll content was adversely affected by increased Cd, Ni, and Cu applications. The highest Cu, Ni, and Cd contents were found in the roots at 140 mg kg-1 Cu, 80 mg kg-1 Ni, and 20 mg kg-1 Cd applications, respectively. The bio-transfer coefficient (BTC), a measure of heavy metal transport from the root region to the leaves, was calculated. The BTC values ranged from 0.84-1.09 for Cu, 0.39-0.84 for Ni, and >1 for Cd at the Control and 5 mg Cd kg-1 treatments. These findings suggest that purslane has potential for phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils, although the bioaccumulation and bio-transfer of heavy metals are dependent on the specific metal and its concentration in the soil. The study also highlights the potential risks associated with the consumption of plants grown in heavy metal-contaminated soils, as heavy metals can accumulate in different plant tissues, potentially entering the food chain. An organism's ability to function properly depends not solely on its diet but also on the intake of nutrients and non-nutritive bioactive compounds that exert immunomodulatory effects. This principle applies both to healthy individuals and, in particular, to those with concomitant chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes. However, the current food industry and the widespread use of highly processed foods often lead to nutritional deficiencies. Numerous studies have confirmed the occurrence of immune system dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes. This article elucidates the impact of specific nutrients on the immune system function, which maintains homeostasis of the organism, with a particular emphasis on type 2 diabetes. The role of macronutrients, micronutrients, vitamins, and selected substances, such as omega-3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10, and alpha-lipoic acid, was taken into consideration, which outlined the minimum range of tests that ought to be performed on patients in order to either directly or indirectly determine the severity of malnutrition in this group of patients. Natural agricultural solid waste material is very cost-effective for synthesizing adsorbents utilized in the removal of heavy metal ion from economic and noneconomic wastewaters, which are numerously exploded in environmental soil and water resources. Punica granatum (pomegranate) stem powder (PGSP) was synthesized into nanoparticle size and practiced in the removal of cobalt metal ions. The adsorbent was synthesized in a greener manner in an aqueous medium. A batch adsorption study was carried out with parameters including the effect of pH (pH 4, 73.13%), adsorbent dose (200 mg, 70.80%), the concentration of metal ion (200 ppm, 81.56%) and effect of temperature (30°C, 71.56%). Characterization study of PGSP before cobalt metal ion adsorption and after cobalt metal ion adsorption was conducted, including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and elemental detection analysis. Metallosis with subsequent cardiac involvement is a possible long‐term complication of hip arthroplasty. We report the case of a young female referred to our centre for the suspicion of cardiac amyloidosis presenting with low electrocardiogram voltage, left ventricular hypertrophy, pericardial effusion, and global and longitudinal systolic impairment with apical sparing pattern. Her medical history was remarkable for arthroplasty in the context of congenital hip dysplasia. Two years prior to presentation, she underwent revision surgery for prosthesis malfunction, and tissue metallosis was initially documented. At the current presentation, cobalt metallosis was confirmed, as the circulating cobalt and chromium levels were severely elevated. The accurate diagnosis prompted the removal of the cobalt source with extensive tissue debridement and the use of chelating agents. Monitoring antibiotic retention in human body fluids after treatment and controlling heavy metal content in water are important requirements for a healthy society. Therefore, the approach proposed in this study is based on developing new optical sensors using porphyrin or its bifunctional hybrid materials made with AuNPs to accomplish the accurate detection of chloramphenicol and cobalt. To produce the new optical chloramphenicol sensors, 2,7,12,17-tetra-tert-butyl-5,10,15,20-tetraaza-21H,23H-porphine (TBAP) was used, both alone in an acid medium and as a hybrid material with AuNPs in a water–DMSO acidified environment. The same hybrid material in the unchanged water–DMSO medium was the sensing material used for Co2+ monitoring. The best results of the hybrid materials were explained by the synergistic effects between the TBAP azaporphyrin and AuNPs. Chloramphenicol was accurately detected in the range of concentrations between 3.58 × 10−6 M and 3.37 × 10−5 M, and the same hybrid material quantified Co2+ in the concentration range of 8.92 × 10−5 M–1.77 × 10−4 M. In addition, we proved that AuNPs can be used for the detection of azaporphyrin (from 2.66 × 10−5 M to 3.29 × 10−4 M), making them a useful tool to monitor porphyrin retention after cancer imaging procedures or in porphyria disease. In conclusion, we harnessed the multifunctionality of this azaporphyrin and of its newly obtained AuNP plasmonic hybrids to detect chloramphenicol and Co2+ quickly, simply, and with high precision. With the aim of evaluating the effects of salicylic acid and brassinosteroid application on some physiological traits and arsenic accumulation in spinach under arsenic stress conditions, an experiment was conducted in a factorial experiment in the form of a randomized complete block design with four replications in the year 2022 in the Nutrition Research Center, Department of Food Hygiene and Quality Control, School of Nutrition and Food Sciences, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Iran. The experimental factors included salicylic acid (0, 0.5, and 0.75 mM), brassinosteroid (0, 0.5, and 0.75 µM), and arsenic stress (0, 50, and 100 µM). Arsenic stress, especially at 100 µM, reduced the net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance of spinach leaves and biomass. Arsenic stress increased the concentration of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, osmolytes, as well as antioxidant enzymes activities in spinach plants. Application of brassinosteroid and salicylic acid significantly increased activities of antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase), osmolytes accumulation (carbohydrates and proline) and spinach biomass; in contrast, application of brassinosteroid and salicylic acid decreased the concentration of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide in spinach plants under arsenic stress conditions. Arsenic accumulation was higher in spinach roots than in leaves. Under 100 µM arsenic stress, the application of different concentrations of salicylic acid and brassinosteroid, individually and in combination, significantly reduced arsenic accumulation in spinach, with the highest positive effect being observed in the treatment of 0.75 mM salicylic acid + 0.75 µM brassinosteroid. In conclusion, brassinosteroid and salicylic acid application increased the tolerance of spinach plants against arsenic stress by improving gas exchange, activity of antioxidant enzymes, accumulation of osmolytes, stability of the membranes, and as a result plant biomass; the positive effects of brassinosteroid and salicylic acid together were greater than that of brassinosteroid or salicylic acid applied separately. A fifty-two-year-old man underwent heart transplantation at our centre after four years of developing progressive heart failure symptoms due to cobalt toxicity-related cardiomyopathy. Between the ages of forty and forty-two, he underwent bilateral metal-on-metal hip arthroplasties for early onset osteoarthritis. Six years later, he developed increasing fatigue and pericardial effusions. Following a prolonged period of deterioration without a clear cause, the diagnosis of cobalt toxicity-related cardiomyopathy due to cobalt-chromium alloy hip prostheses was eventually made. He underwent bilateral revision hip arthroplasties and was listed for heart transplantation. Metal-on-metal joint replacement is a rare cause of iatrogenic cobalt toxicity. Anaesthetists may encounter patients with unexplained symptoms of heart failure, having a high index of suspicion presenting an opportunity for early diagnosis and intervention before end-stage disease develops.

Abstract: High-resolution 1H NMR spectroscopy demonstrated that addition of Co(II) ions to isolated human salivary supernatants (HSSs) gave rise to its complexation by a variety of biomolecules. The relative efficacies of these complexants/chelators in this context were classifiable by the influence of added Co(II) on their line-widths and chemical shift values, and also the added Co(II) concentration-dependence of these spectral modifications. Those which were most affected by the addition of this metal ion were lactate > formate ≈histidinate > succinate, this order reflecting the ability of these complexants to compete for the available Co(II) in terms of (1) thermodynamic equilibrium constants for the formation of their complexes and (2) their HSS concentrations. Since many of these HSS Co(II) complexants (particularly lactate, formate and histidine) serve as powerful OH scavengers, the results acquired indicate that any of this radical generated from the Co(II) source in such complexes via pseudo-Fenton reactions may be ‘site-specifically’ scavenged. The significance of these observations regarding the in vivo corrosion of cobalt-containing metal alloy dental prostheses (e.g., Co–Cr alloys), the availability of trace levels of this metal ion in human saliva, and cobalt toxicity, is discussed. Cobalt intoxication is a rare complication of joint arthroplasty with a metal-on-metal prothesis or metal implants after broken ceramic implants. Patients with metal components should be monitored closely for complications. The awareness for the wide range of clinical pictures of this cobalt intoxication should be increased. We here describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic and therapeutic work-up of a 70-year-old patient with a cobalt metallosis. The patient presented with a progressive deterioration of vision and hearing, axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy and cataract. The extensive work-up resulted in the diagnosis of a cobalt metallosis as a complication of a metal hip prosthesis. Cobalt intoxication, especially after metal-on-metal total joint arthroplasty, is a rare complication; however, there have been several reports of similar cases. It is therefore recommended to avoid the implantation of a metal-on-metal prothesis or metal implants after broken ceramic implants as in this case whenever possible. Background: Tungsten carbide (WC) and tungsten carbide cobalt (WC-Co) nanoparticles are of occupational health relevance because of the increasing usage in hard metal industries. Earlier studies showed an enhanced toxic potential for WC-Co compared to WC or cobalt ions alone. Therefore, we investigated the impact of these particles, compared to cobalt ions applied as CoCl2, on the global gene expression level in human keratinocytes (HaCaT) in vitro. Results: WC nanoparticles exerted very little effects on the transcriptomic level after 3 hours and 3 days of exposure. In contrast, WC-Co nanoparticles caused significant transcriptional changes that were similar to those provoked by CoCl2. However, CoCl2 exerted even more pronounced changes in the transcription patterns. Gene set enrichment analyses revealed that the differentially expressed genes were related to hypoxia response, carbohydrate metabolism, endocrine pathways, and targets of several transcription factors. The role of the transcription factor HIF1 (hypoxia inducible factor 1) is particularly highlighted and aspects of downstream events as well as the role of other transcription factors related to cobalt toxicity are considered. Conclusions: This study provides extensive data useful for the understanding of nanoparticle and cobalt toxicity. It shows that WC nanoparticles caused low transcriptional responses while WC-Co nanoparticles are able to exert responses similar to that of free cobalt ions, particularly the induction of hypoxia-like effects via interactions with HIF1α in human keratinocytes. Background: In 2020, more than 14,000 aseptic revision procedures for total hip arthroplasty (THA) were registered in Germany. Patient expectations of revision hip arthroplasty are not substantially different from expectations of primary hip replacement., Outcome: However, revision surgery is associated with increased complication rates and a higher proportion of dissatisfied patients. In particular, poorer postoperative function and mobility as well as increased pain levels following revision THA have been described compared to the outcome after primary THA. Quality of life and return-to-work can also be impaired., Survival Rate: Implant survival is influenced by age, BMI, and comorbidities of the patients, but also by the size and complexity of bone defects, the extent of periprosthetic soft tissue compromise and the choice of revision implant(s). In addition, the number of previous revision surgeries inversely correlates with the survival rates. A forty-year-old man experienced worsening heart failure four years following bilateral complicated total hip replacement. His condition was extensively worked up but no underlying pathology was immediately evident. Given the cobalt-chromium alloy component present in the hip arthroplasties, the raised cobalt blood levels, and a fitting clinical picture coupled with radiological findings, the patient underwent right hip revision. Evidence of biotribocorrosion was present on direct visualisation intraoperatively. The patient subsequently experienced symptomatic improvement (NYHA class III to class I) and echocardiography showed recovery of ejection fraction. Cobalt exists as a bivalent and trivalent molecule in circulation and produces a cytotoxicity profile similar to nanoparticles, causing neurological, thyroid, and cardiological pathology. Blood levels are not entirely useful as there is no identifiable conversion factor for levels in whole blood, serum, and erythrocytes which seem to act independently of each other. Interestingly cobalt cardiomyopathy is frequently compounded by other possible causes of cardiomyopathy such as alcohol and a link has been postulated. The mechanisms underlying cobalt toxicity in aquatic species in general and cnidarians in particular remain poorly understood. Herein we investigated cobalt toxicity in a Hydra model from morphological, histological, developmental, and molecular biological perspectives. Hydra, exposed to cobalt (0-60 mg/L), were altered in morphology, histology, and regeneration. Exposure to standardized sublethal doses of cobalt impaired feeding by affecting nematocytes, which in turn affected reproduction. At the cellular level, excessive ROS generation, as the principal mechanism of action, primarily occurred in the lysosomes, which was accompanied by the upregulation of expression of the antioxidant genes SOD, GST, GPx, and G6PD. The number of Hsp70 and FoxO transcripts also increased. Interestingly, the upregulations were higher in the 24-h than in the 48-h time-point group, indicating that ROS overwhelmed the cellular defense mechanisms at the latter time-point. Comet assay revealed DNA damage. Cell cycle analysis indicated the induction of apoptosis accompanied or not by cell cycle arrest. Immunoblot analyses revealed that cobalt treatment triggered mitochondria-mediated apoptosis as inferred from the modulation of the key proteins Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase-3. Abstract Heavy metal stress affects crop growth and yields as wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) growth and development are negatively affected under heavy metal stress. The study examined the effect of cobalt chloride (CoCl2) stress on wheat growth and development. To alleviate this problem, a pot experiment was done to analyze the role of sulfur-rich thiourea (STU) in accelerating the defense system of wheat plants against cobalt toxicity. The experimental treatments were, i) Heavy metal stress (a) control and (b) Cobalt stress (300 µM), ii) STU foliar applications; (a) control and (b) 500 µM single dose was applied after seven days of stress, and iii) Wheat varieties (a) FSD-2008 and (b) Zincol-2016. The results revealed that cobalt stress decreased chlorophyll a by 10%, chlorophyll b by 16%, and carotenoids by 5% while foliar application of STU increased these photosynthetic pigments by 16%, 15%, and 15% respectively under stress conditions as in contrast to control. In addition, cobalt stress enhances hydrogen peroxide production by 11% and malondialdehyde (MDA) by 10%. In comparison, STU applications at 500 µM reduced the production of these reactive oxygen species by 5% and by 20% by up-regulating the activities of antioxidants. Results have revealed that the activities of SOD improved by 29%, POD by 25%, and CAT by 28% under Cobalt stress. Furthermore, the foliar application of STU significantly increased the accumulation of osmoprotectants as TSS was increased by 23% and proline was increased by 24% under cobalt stress. Among wheat varieties, FSD-2008 showed better adaptation under Cobalt stress by showing enhanced photosynthetic pigments and antioxidant activities compared to Zincol-2016. In conclusion, the foliar-applied STU can alleviate the negative impacts of Cobalt stress by improving plant physiological attributes and upregulating the antioxidant defense system in wheat. Cobalt nanoparticles (NPs) when released into the air during industrial processes, can enter the lungs through inhalation, leading to potential toxicity and respiratory issues. The mechanism of cobalt toxicity is not well understood and needs further investigation. We, therefore, studied the effects of two kinds of cobalt-based nanoparticles (NPs) on lung cells. These NPs were Co NPs (i.e. Cobalt NPs) and Co-Fe NPs (i.e. CoFe 2 O 4 NPs) that were similar in size and shape but slightly differed for the surface iron composition. The average size of Co NPs was 28 ± 18 nm, and that of Co-Fe was 26 ± 13 nm. We exposed the cells to the NPs for 24 h and measured their viability by MTT assay and CalceinAM fluorescence imaging. Potential induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was detected by probes DHE specific for superoxide (O 2 •–) and DCFH-DA for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2). Antioxidant glutathione (GSH) quantification was followed by measuring apoptotic/necrotic potential. Using Co NPs and Co-Fe NPs, we measured the IC50 for cell growth in A549 cells after 24 h of exposure. The values were 79 μg/mL and 163 μg/mL, respectively. We also observed that both NPs induced ROS and reduced the fluorescence of CalceinAM in the cells, but Co NPs had a stronger effect than Co-Fe NPs. This was correlated with the production of O 2 – by the NPs, which was higher for Co NPs than for Co-Fe NPs. On the other hand, H 2 O 2 production was higher for Co-Fe NPs than for Co NPs. Our study suggests that the main cause of differential O 2 – production is the differential release Co2+ ion due to surface modification resulting in differential quenching of green (CalceinAM) fluorescence by both NPs. Both NPs induced apoptosis mode of cell death. Our data from the use of naïve and surface-modified cobalt-based NPs, suggest that NAC can protect cells from cobalt-based NP toxicity by not only restoring cellular GSH levels but also by chelating released Co2+ ions from the NPs surfaces. Additionally, this study for the first time to our knowledge indicates that CalceinAM alone is not sufficient to assess the toxicity of cobalt-based NPs. In this study, Mg1-xCoxFe2O4 (0max) during local magnetic hyperthermia were affected by structural alterations associated with particle size and composition. The lattice parameter, X-ray density, ionic radius, hopping length, bond length, cation-cation distance, and cation-anion distance increase with an increase in Co2+ content. Raman and FTIR spectroscopy reveal changes in cation distribution with Co2+ content and particle size. Magnetic properties measured by the physical property measurement system (PPMS) showed saturation magnetization (Ms), coercivity (Hc), remanent magnetization (Mr/Ms), and anisotropy constant (K1) of the Mg1-xCoxFe2O4 nanoparticles increase with Co2+ content and particle size. When exposed to an rf magnetic field, the nanohybrids experienced an increase in both the SLP (specific loss power) and Tmax (maximum temperature) as the particle size initially increased. However, these values reached their peak at critical particle size and subsequently decreased. This occurs since a modest increase in anisotropy, resulting from the presence of Co2+ and larger particle size, facilitates Néel and Brownian relaxation. However, for high anisotropy values and particle size, the Néel and Brownian relaxations are hindered, leading to the emergence of a critical size. The critical size increases as the Co2+ content decreases, but it decreases as the Co2+ content increases, a consequence of higher anisotropy with the increase in Co2+. Additionally, it is noteworthy that the maximum temperature (Tmax) rises as the concentration of nanohybrids grows, but the specific loss power (SLP) decreases. An increased concentration of chitosan-MCFO nanohybrids inhibits both the Néel and Brownian relaxation processes, reducing specific loss power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The release of heavy metals into the environment as a result of industrial and agricultural activities represents one of the century's most significant issues. Cobalt is a hazardous metal that is employed in a variety of industries. In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) combined with Box–Behnken design (BBD) was utilized to optimize the Co(II) ion removal from synthetic wastewater by the brown macroalga Padina pavonica. The influence of three factors, namely algal inoculum size, pH, and initial metal concentration, was assessed in optimization studies. RSM proposed a second-order quadratic model with a p-value of <0.0001 and R2 of 0.984 for P. pavonica. According to the data related to RSM optimization, the maximum percentage of Co(II) removal of 84.3% was attained under the conditions of algal inoculum size of 5.98 g/L, pH of 6.73, and initial Co(II) concentration of 21.63 mg/L. The experimental data from the biosorption process were fitted well with the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The maximal Co(II) adsorption capacity was estimated using the Langmuir model to be 17.98 mg/g. Furthermore, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was shown to have the best fit for Co biosorption by P. pavonica, showing that the mechanism of Co(II) biosorption was chemisorption controlled by surface biosorption and intra-particle diffusion. Thermodynamic parameters were also investigated to evaluate the Gibbs free energy for the Co(II) ion, which was positive, showing that the biosorption process is nonspontaneous and exothermic, and the cobalt biosorption rate decreases with increasing temperature. Algal biomass was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. These analyses revealed the biosorbent's diverse functional groups and porous, rough appearance. Engineering Saccharomyces cerevisiae for biodegradation and transformation of industrial toxic substances such as catechol (CA) has received widespread attention, but the low tolerance of S. cerevisiae to CA has limited its development. The exploration and modification of genes or pathways related to CA tolerance in S. cerevisiae is an effective way to further improve the utilization efficiency of CA. This study identified 36 genes associated with CA tolerance in S. cerevisiae through genome-wide identification and bioinformatics analysis and the ERG6 knockout strain (ERG6Δ) is the most sensitive to CA. Based on the omics analysis of ERG6Δ under CA stress, it was found that ERG6 knockout affects pathways such as intrinsic component of membrane and pentose phosphate pathway. In addition, the study revealed that 29 genes related to the cell wall-membrane system were up-regulated by more than twice, NADPH and NADP+ were increased by 2.48 and 4.41 times respectively, and spermidine and spermine were increased by 2.85 and 2.14 times, respectively, in ERG6Δ. Overall, the response of cell wall-membrane system, the accumulation of spermidine and NADPH, as well as the increased levels of metabolites in pentose phosphate pathway are important findings in improving the CA resistance. Wastewater discharges from industrial processes typically include elevated concentrations of contaminants, which largely consist of potentially harmful chemicals such as heavy metals. These contaminants are characterized by their slow rate of decomposition. Hence, the removal of these metallic ions from effluents poses a challenge. Among different treatments, the adsorption approach has considerable potential due to its ability to effectively eliminate both soluble and insoluble pollutants from effluent, even at lower levels of concentration. Of various wastes, fly ash (FA) material has been the subject of attention because it is abundant, has favorable qualities, and contains a high percentage of minerals. This review investigates multiple facets, with a specific focus on the application of FA, an industrial byproduct, as an adsorbent in removing heavy metals. A comprehensive examination was conducted on a range of concerns pertaining to the pollution caused by metallic ions, including the underlying causes, levels of contamination, health implications of heavy metals, and removal methods. Multiple factors were found to affect the adsorption process. Of all the factors, the pH value considerably influences the elimination of heavy metals. An acidic pH range of 2.5–4.5 was found to be optimal for achieving the highest possible elimination of As(V), Cu(II), Hg(II), and Cr(VI). The latter elimination rate reached 89% at the optimal pH level. Most heavy metals' adsorption isotherms conformed to the Langmuir or Freundlich models, while the pseudo-second-order kinetics provided a satisfactory match for their removal. Using a raw FA, adsorption capacities were achieved in the removal of metallic ions, Ni(II), Pb(II), and Cr(VI), that ranged from 14.0 to 23.9 mg g−1. Meanwhile, the FA-zeolite showed a remarkable capacity to adsorb ions Mn(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II), with values ranging from about 31 to 66 mg g−1. The cost analysis showed that the treatment of FA is economically advantageous and may result in significant cost reductions in comparison to commercial adsorbents. In summary, FA is an inexpensive waste material with potential for water treatment applications and several other purposes due to its excellent chemical and mineralogical composition. Ganga river is the inhabitant of more than 190 fish species and important river system of India. Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the Gangetic riverine ecosystem are a hot environmental issue. A detailed evaluation of PTEs bioaccumulation in Gangetic fishes is required to safeguard human health. The present study investigated the bioaccumulation of PTEs (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn, and Mn) within 12 economic fish species (n = 72) collected from the lower Gangetic stretch. The mean concentrations of PTEs followed the order Zn > Cu > Mn > Ni > Se > Cr > Pb > Co ~ Li > Cd. Li and Se bioaccumulation were studied first time from Gangetic fishes. Results demonstrated that all the selected PTEs were below the maximum permissible limit recommended by reference standards except for Zn in L. catla and L. rohita. For all PTEs, the metal pollution index (MPI), hazard quotient (THQ), and hazard index (HI) were < 1, indicating that these PTEs do not pose a health risk to the public through the dietary intake of fish in this study area. All studied fish were acceptable in terms of carcinogenic risk (CR) from exposure to Cd, Cr, and Pb. Multivariate statistical analysis suggests that inter-correlated metals have similar dispersion properties and bioaccumulation homology within the body. This article explores recent advancements and innovative strategies in biosorption technology, with a particular focus on the removal of heavy metals, such as Cu(II), Pb(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI), Zn(II), and Ni(II), and a metalloid, As(V), from various sources. Detailed information on biosorbents, including their composition, structure, and performance metrics in heavy metal sorption, is presented. Specific attention is given to the numerical values of the adsorption capacities for each metal, showcasing the efficacy of biosorbents in removing Cu (up to 96.4%), Pb (up to 95%), Cr (up to 99.9%), Zn (up to 99%), Ni (up to 93.8%), and As (up to 92.9%) from wastewater and industrial effluents. In addition, the issue of biosorbent deactivation and failure over time is highlighted as it is crucial for the successful implementation of adsorption in practical applications. Such phenomena as blockage by other cations or chemical decomposition are reported, and chemical, thermal, and microwave treatments are indicated as effective regeneration techniques. Ongoing research should focus on the development of more resilient biosorbent materials, optimizing regeneration techniques, and exploring innovative approaches to improve the long-term performance and sustainability of biosorption technologies. The analysis showed that biosorption emerges as a promising strategy for alleviating pollutants in wastewater and industrial effluents, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to addressing water pollution challenges. Pesticide residues and heavy metal content of cassava, yam, cocoyam, potato, water yam and carrot were evaluated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The detected pesticide residues in the samples were 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, glyphosate, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorobiphenyl, aldrin, endosulfan, profenofos, g-chlordane, carbofuran, biphenyl, heptachlor, lindane and t-Nonachlor. The concentration of HCB ranged between 0.0799 ± 0.06 mg/kg and 0.1596 ± 0.00 mg/kg, which was greater than the permitted maximum limit of 0.5 mg/kg established by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The concentration of aldrin and profenofos detected was lower than the predetermined maximum allowed limits. Endosulfan concentrations in cocoyam (0.2500 mg/kg) and potato (0.3265 mg/kg) were higher than the limits allowed by the Canadian Department of Industrial Research. The heavy metals detected in these samples include cobalt, nickel, lead, manganese, chromium, arsenic and mercury in at least one of the samples evaluated. There was not much difference between the concentration of cobalt in yam (0.036 mg/kg) and the maximum allowed concentration (0.043 mg/kg). Lead was detected in potatoes and carrots but was below detectable concentration in cassava, yam, cocoyam and water yam. Similarly, cocoyam was found to have a significant mercury content (0.658 mg/kg), but mercury content was below detectable concentrations in cassava, yam and water yam. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The deleterious impact of osmotic stress, induced by water deficit in arid and semi-arid regions, poses a formidable challenge to cotton production. To protect cotton farming in dry areas, it’s crucial to create strong plans to increase soil water and reduce stress on plants. The carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), gibberellic acid (GA3) and biochar (BC) are individually found effective in mitigating osmotic stress. However, combine effect of CMC and GA3 with biochar on drought mitigation is still not studied in depth. The present study was carried out using a combination of GA3 and CMC with BC as amendments on cotton plants subjected to osmotic stress levels of 70 (70 OS) and 40 (40 OS). There were five treatment groups, namely: control (0% CMC-BC and 0% GA3-BC), 0.4%CMC-BC, 0.4%GA3-BC, 0.8%CMC-BC, and 0.8%GA3-BC. Each treatment was replicated five times with a completely randomized design (CRD). The results revealed that 0.8 GA3-BC led to increase in cotton shoot fresh weight (99.95%), shoot dry weight (95.70%), root fresh weight (73.13%), and root dry weight (95.74%) compared to the control group under osmotic stress. There was a significant enhancement in cotton chlorophyll a (23.77%), chlorophyll b (70.44%), and total chlorophyll (35.44%), the photosynthetic rate (90.77%), transpiration rate (174.44%), and internal CO2 concentration (57.99%) compared to the control group under the 40 OS stress. The escalating demand for processed foods has led to the widespread industrial use of glucose isomerase (GI) for high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) production. This reliance on GIs necessitates continual Co2+ supplementation to sustain high catalytic activity across multiple reaction cycles. In this study, Serratia marcescens GI (SmGI) was immobilized onto surfaces of the metal-organic framework (MOF) material MOF (Co)-525 to generate MOF (Co)-525-GI for use in catalyzing glucose isomerization to generate fructose. Examination of MOF (Co)-525-GI structural features using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet spectroscopy revealed no structural changes after SmGI immobilization and the addition of Co2+. Notably, MOF (Co)-525-GI exhibited optimal catalytic activity at pH 7.5 and 70 °C, with a maximum reaction rate (Vmax) of 37.24 ± 1.91 μM/min and Km value of 46.25 ± 3.03 mM observed. Remarkably, immobilized SmGI exhibited sustained high catalytic activity over multiple cycles without continuous Co2+ infusion, retaining its molecular structure and 96.38% of its initial activity after six reaction cycles. These results underscore the potential of MOF (Co)-525-GI to serve as a safer and more efficient immobilized enzyme technology compared to traditional GI-based food-processing technologies. Objective: Although milk and dairy products are almost complete food, they can contain toxic heavy elements with potential hazards for consumers. This review aims to provide a comprehensive report on the occurrence, concentration, and health risks of selected heavy metals in pasteurized and sterilized milk recorded worldwide. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) was used to develop this systematic review. Databases included the Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Scientific Information Database, Google Scholar, and PubMed from inception until January 2023. Keywords related to the terms "Heavy metals", "Arsenic" and "Pasteurized and sterilized milk" and "Risk Assessment" were used. The potential health risks to human health from milk daily consumption were estimated using extracted data on heavy metals concentration based on metal estimated daily intake, target hazard quotient, and carcinogenic risk. Results: A total of 48 potentially relevant articles with data on 981 milk samples were included in the systematic review. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry were the most common valid methods to measure heavy metals in milk samples. Following the initial evaluation, Cu, Cd, Zn, and Pb were the most contaminants, which exceeded the maximum permissible criteria in 94%, 67%, 62%, and 46% of the milk samples tested. Relying on target hazard quotient and carcinogenic risk results, milk consumers in 33(68.75%) and 7 (14.5%) studies were exposed to moderate to high levels of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk, respectively. The highest level of risk is due to the consumption of pasteurized and sterilized milk detected in Pakistan, Brazil, Egypt, Slovakia, and Turkey. Conclusion: The elevated levels of heavy metals in milk samples, especially Pb and Cd is a public health concern; therefore, maximum control and strict regulations must be adopted to decrease heavy metals contaminants in the dairy industry. A fungal biomass, Lactarius salmonicolor (L. salmonicolor), was entrapped in a silica gel matrix to evaluate the removal of Co2+ and Mn2+ ions from an aqueous medium and a real effluent. The batch experiments were carried out to investigate the influences of biosorbent dosage, initial pH, contact time, and temperature. The results showed that no pH adjustment was necessary to obtain maximum removal of both Co2+ and Mn2+ ions by silica gel immobilized L. salmonicolor biomass (SILSB). Thirty and ten minutes were found to be necessary time to establish biosorption equilibrium for Co2+ and Mn2+ removal, respectively. The biosorption of both metal ions was best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The data of the isotherm modeling proved that the Co2+ and Mn2+ biosorption occurred by monolayer coverage of SILSB surface with the biosorption capacities of 117.70 and 137.05 mg g−1, respectively. The highest biosorption yields of Co2+ and Mn2+ ions in the continuous system are found using 50 mg (2 g L−1) of SILSB as the optimum amount. The biosorption capacity did not significantly change by increasing the flow rate from 0.5 to 4.0 mL min−1. The real wastewater treatment also showed that SILSB had remarkable biosorption efficacy for Co2+ and Mn2+. Metal ion-biosorbent interactions were examined by FTIR, pHZPC, SEM, EDX, elemental, and BET analyses. Introduction: Biochemical and metabolic processes help plants tolerate the adverse effects of drought. In plants accumulating bioactive compounds, understanding the genetic control of the biosynthesis of biochemical pathways helps the discovery of candidate gene (CG)–metabolite relationships. Methods: The metabolic profile of flowers in 119 rapeseed (Brassica napus) accessions was assessed over two irrigation treatments, one a well-watered (WW) condition and the other a drought stress (DS) regime. We integrated information gained from 52,157 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, metabolites, and transcriptomes to identify linked SNPs and CGs responsible for the genetic control of flower phenolic compounds and regulatory elements. Results: In a genome-wide association study (GWAS), of the SNPs tested, 29,310 SNPs were qualified to assess the population structure and linkage disequilibrium (LD), of which several SNPs for radical scavenging activity (RSA) and total flavanol content (TFLC) were common between the two irrigation conditions and pleiotropic SNPs were found for chlorogenic and coumaric acids content. The principal component analysis (PCA) and stepwise regression showed that chlorogenic acid and epicatechin in WW and myricetin in DS conditions were the most important components for RSA. The hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) showed that vanillic acid, myricetin, gallic acid, and catechin were closely associated in both irrigation conditions. Analysis of GWAS showed that 60 CGs were identified, of which 18 were involved in stress-induced pathways, phenylpropanoid pathway, and flavonoid modifications. Of the CGs, PAL1, CHI, UGT89B1, FLS3, CCR1, and CYP75B137 contributed to flavonoid biosynthetic pathways. The results of RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) revealed that the transcript levels of PAL, CHI, and CYP75B137 known as early flavonoid biosynthesis-related genes and FLS3, CCR1, and UGT89B1 related to the later stages were increased during drought conditions. The transcription factors (TFs) NAC035 and ERF119 related to flavonoids and phenolic acids were upregulated under drought conditions. Discussion: These findings expand our knowledge on the response mechanisms to DS, particularly regarding the regulation of key phenolic biosynthetic genes in rapeseed. Background: Metal-on-metal (M-M) total hip arthroplasty (THA) has shown adverse reactions to metal debris, abnormal soft-tissue reactions, and high blood metal ion levels. This study aims to: (1) assess whether the toxicity of high levels of ions is related to altered oxidative stress and (2) evaluate tribological factors related to increased blood levels of chromium (Cr) and cobalt (Co) ions. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical descriptive study was conducted on 75 patients. A total of 25 underwent M-M THA, 25 ceramic-on-metal (C-M) THA, and 25 were on the THA waiting list. Ion metallic levels in blood, oxidative stress, physical activity, and implant position were compared. Results: In the M-M group, Co and Cr levels were significantly higher than those found in the C-M group and the control group (p < 0.01). We found no differences in terms of oxidative stress between the groups. Also, we did not find a correlation between metal blood levels and oxidative stress indicators, the physical activity of the patients or the position of the implants between groups. Conclusions: The use of M-M bearing surfaces in THA raises the levels of metals in the blood without modifying oxidative stress regardless of the physical activity levels of the patients. Therefore, although patients with M-M bearings require close monitoring, it does not seem necessary to recommend the restriction of physical activity in patients with M-M or C-M arthroplasties. This study marks a pioneering effort in utilizing Vachellia tortilis subsp. raddiana (Savi) Kyal. & Boatwr., (commonly known as acacia raddiana) leaves as both a reducing and stabilizing agent in the green "eco-friendly" synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The research aimed to optimize the AgNPs synthesis process by investigating the influence of pH, temperature, extract volume, and contact time on both the reaction rate and the resulting AgNPs' morphology as well as discuss the potential of AgNPs in detecting some heavy metals. Various characterization methods, such as UV–vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), Zeta sizer, EDAX, and transmitting electron microscopy (TEM), were used to thoroughly analyze the properties of the synthesized AgNPs. The XRD results verified the successful production of AgNPs with a crystallite size between 20 to 30 nm. SEM and TEM analyses revealed that the AgNPs are primarily spherical and rod-shaped, with sizes ranging from 8 to 41 nm. Significantly, the synthesis rate of AgNPs was notably higher in basic conditions (pH 10) at 70 °C. These results underscore the effectiveness of acacia raddiana as a source for sustainable AgNPs synthesis. The study also examined the AgNPs' ability to detect various heavy metal ions colorimetrically, including Hg2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, and Co2+. UV–Vis spectroscopy proved useful for this purpose. The color of AgNPs shifts from brownish-yellow to pale yellow, colorless, pale red, and reddish yellow when detecting Cu2+, Hg2+, Co2+, and Pb2+ ions, respectively. This change results in an alteration of the AgNPs' absorbance band, vanishing with Hg2+ and shifting from 423 to 352 nm, 438 nm, and 429 nm for Cu2+, Co2+, and Pb2+ ions, respectively. The AgNPs showed high sensitivity, with detection limits of 1.322 × 10–5 M, 1.37 × 10–7 M, 1.63 × 10–5 M, and 1.34 × 10–4 M for Hg2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, and Co2+, respectively. This study highlights the potential of using acacia raddiana for the eco-friendly synthesis of AgNPs and their effectiveness as environmental sensors for heavy metals, showcasing strong capabilities in colorimetric detection. In order to analyze the spatial variability of soil nutrients and their ecological chemometrics in Tangchang Town, National Agricultural Park, 20 influencing factors were selected: soil pH, Cd, Hg, As, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni, Se, elevation, slope, aspect, land use type, distance from industrial land, distance from commercial land, distance from railway, distance from residential area, distance from highway and distance from river. The effects of various influencing factors on the spatial variability of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (N), total phosphorus (P), total potassium (K) and ecological stoichiometry were analyzed by means of geographic detector. The results showed that average contents of soil TOC, N, P and K in the study area are 10.24 g kg-1, 1.33 g kg-1, 1.14 g kg-1 and 23.60 g kg-1, respectively, and there were significant differences in the spatial distribution of soil nutrients and their eco-stoichiometry in the study area, and TOC, N, P, K, C/N, C/P, C/K, N/P, N/K and P/K has a significant correlation with each other and most correlation coefficients are above 0.5 or below -0.5. Factor detection showed that soil properties, distance from railway and distance from residential area had the most significant explanatory power to the spatial heterogeneity of soil nutrients and eco-stoichiometry. Interaction detection showed that the interaction between soil properties with other factors was the most important factor affecting the spatial differentiation of soil nutrients and their ecological chemometrics, and elevation, distance from railway and distance from residential area were also important factors. Risk detection showed that the differences of soil nutrients and their ecological stoichiometry were most significant in the subregions of soil properties (pH, Cd, Hg, As, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni and Se). Purpose: Hip arthroplasty with metal-on-metal bearings like hip resurfacing results in the release of metallic ions. In parallel, like every metallic implant, knee arthroplasty implants undergo passive corrosion. We analyzed blood levels of cobalt and chromium ions in patients who have a hip resurfacing arthroplasty and compared them to patients who have undergone knee arthroplasty at a minimum follow-up of one year. The hypothesis was that there is no difference in the ion release between hip resurfacing and knee arthroplasty. Methods: Sixty-three patients who underwent knee arthroplasty were compared to a cohort of 132 patients who underwent hip resurfacing. The blood levels of cobalt and chromium ions were determined preoperatively and at six and 12 months postoperatively and then compared between groups. We analyzed the relationship between ion release and the change in clinical outcome scores (Harris Hip score, Oxford Hip score, Merle D'Aubigné Postel score, Oxford Knee score, International Knee Society score), the BMI, sex, physical activity, implant size and inclination of the acetabular implant (hip resurfacing patients only). Mixed linear models were used to assess the changes in ion blood levels over time. Results: The cobalt blood levels were higher in the first 6 months in the resurfacing group (0.87 ug/L vs 0.67 ug/L; p = 0.011), while it was higher in the knee arthroplasty group at 12 months (1.20 ug/L vs 1.41 ug/L; p = 0.0008). There were no significant differences in chromium levels during the follow-up period. Conclusion: The increase in metal ion release after knee arthroplasty is as high as after hip resurfacing at the one year follow-up. The aim of this study was to determine by SEM-EDS analysis of the surface morphologies of the periostracum and nacreous layer and to determine the sodium (Na), Strontium (Sr), manganese (Mn), potassium (K), titanium (Ti), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni) metals levels in the shells of the mussel (Potomida semirugata, Unio terminalis, Anodonta pseudodopsis and Leguminaia wheatleyi) obtained from Gölbaşı Lake, Turkey. The results of the study, the representative SEM analysis and corresponding EDS spectra of the periostracum and nacreous layer of the shells of freshwater mussels confirmed the presence of elemental compositions, including CaCO3. P. semirugata and U. terminalis have the aragonite prismatic layer that shows typical polygonal organizing, regular and polygonal crystal forms, with hexagonal and coexisting rhombic shapes. However, while A. pseudodopsis has round aragonite crystals (Rc), L. wheatleyi has irregular crystal plate layers (Irc). CaCO3, detected strong Ca peaks as well as C and O peaks with Mg and Si peaks. On the other hand, sodium (Na) was found in the highest concentrations ranging from 82.30±0.040 to 155.37±0.050 µg/g, and its concentrations were also higher than those of other metals in all species. The most abundant elements in shells of four freshwater mussel's species were Sr, Na, and Mn which ranged from 26.07±0.44-58.023±0.52 µg/g, 82.30±0.040-155.37±0.050 µg/g, and 6.06±0.044-9.66±0.053 µg/g respectively. Background: Cobalt toxicity-related cardiomyopathy in hip arthroplasty has recently been reported in the literature. The purpose of this review is to identify and assess available published evidence of cardiomyopathy in hip arthroplasty patients and to derive recommendations for management. Methods: We evaluated 23 cases reported until October 2018 and stratified them into 3 categories, based upon pre-existing risk factors for cardiomyopathy, histological confirmation, and evidence of systemic signs of cobalt toxicity. Results: Cobalt toxicity was considered to be the definite cause of cardiomyopathy in 8 cases, and probably contributory in 13 cases. Two cases were considered to have developed cardiomyopathy secondary to pre-existing risk factors. Majority of the patients had a good recovery of cardiac function after hip revision and cardiac management, but 5 cases deteriorated and died. Conclusions: Although cobalt-related cardiomyopathy has been reported in a small number of cases of hip arthroplasty, a delay or missed diagnosis may lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Timely diagnosis, removal of causative implant, and avoidance of metal articulations in revision for fractured ceramic implants may help in an effective management. Recent, unexpected high failure rates of metal-on-metal hip implants have reintroduced the issue of cobalt toxicity. An adverse reaction to cobalt ions and cobalt-induced lung injury occurs during environmental exposure and is now strictly controlled. Currently adverse reaction occurs to cobalt nanoparticles during wear and tear of metal-on-metal hip implants of which the underlying mechanism is not fully understood. The putative role of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) pathway in the mechanism of cobalt nanoparticle (Co-NPs) toxicity was examined using the U937 cell line, human alveolar macrophages and monocyte-derived macrophages. Co-NPs (5–20 μg/ml)-induced cytotoxicity (viability ranged from 75% to <20% of control, respectively) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), whereas a comparable concentration of cobalt ions (Co(II); up to 350 μM) did not. Co-NPs induced HIF-1α stabilization. Addition of ascorbic acid (100 µM) and glutathione (1 mM) both prevented the increased ROS. However, only treatment with ascorbic acid reduced HIF-1α levels and prevented cell death, indicating that a ROS-independent pathway is involved in Co-NPs-induced cytotoxicity. Replenishing intracellular ascorbate, which is crucial in preventing HIF pathway activation, modified Co-induced HIF target gene expression and the inflammatory response, by decreasing interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) mRNA and protein expression. Addition of glutathione had no effect on Co-NPs-induced HIF target gene expression or inflammatory response. Thus, Co-NPs induce the HIF pathway by depleting intracellular ascorbate, leading to HIF stabilization and pathway activation. Adverse tissue responses to prostheses wear particles and released ions are important contributors to hip implant failure. In implant-related adverse reactions T-lymphocytes play a prominent role in sustaining the chronic inflammatory response. To further understand the involvement of lymphocytes in metal-on-metal (MoM) implant failure, primary human lymphocytes were isolated and treated with cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) wear debris and Co ions, individually, and in combination, for 24, 48 and 120 h. There was a significant increase in cell number where debris was present, as measured by the Neutral Red assay. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) secretion levels significantly decreased in the presence of metal particles, as measured by ELISA. Interleukin-2 (IL-2) secretion levels were significantly decreased by both debris and Co ions. Flow cytometry analysis showed that the metal nanoparticles induced a significant increase in apoptosis after 48-h exposure. This investigation showed that prolonged exposure (120 h) to metal debris induces lymphocyte proliferation, suggesting that activation of resting lymphocytes may have occurred. Although cytokine production was affected mainly by metal debris, cobalt toxicity may also modulate IL-2 secretion, and even Co ion concentrations below the MHRA guideline levels (7 ppb) may contribute to the impairment of immune regulation in vivo in patients with MoM implants. Purpose: We detail a case of cobalt toxicity with visual and systemic complications, review the pathogenic process for the optic neuropathy and retinopathy, and discuss the controversy of metallic hip prosthesis. Observations: A 59-year-old female with a history of multiple left hip arthroplasties presented to our clinic with bilateral visual loss. The year prior, she had failure of the hip implant necessitating revision surgery with placement of a chrome-cobalt head. A few months after surgery, she began experiencing blurred and “white, spotty” vision in both eyes in addition to hypothyroidism, cardiomyopathy and neuropathy. The possibility of the patient's symptoms being due to cobalt toxicity from her hip prosthesis was proposed and she was found to have a serum cobalt level >1000 μg/L (normal 0–0.9 ng/mL). Visual acuity was 20/600 in the right and 20/800 in the left eye. There was bilateral temporal optic disc pallor. Goldmann visual field testing demonstrated bilateral central scotomas, optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed severe ganglion cell layer-inner plexiform layer (GCLIPL) thinning and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) demonstrated decreased amplitudes in both eyes. She underwent a total hip revision arthroplasty with extensive debridement of “black sludge” found within a pseudocapsule. Four days after surgery, cobalt serum levels had significantly decreased to 378 ng/mL. One month after surgery, she had significant improvement in visual acuity (20/150 right eye, 20/250 left eye), Goldmann visual field testing, and mfERG. OCT showed retinal nerve fiber thinning and persistent GCLIPL thinning in both eyes. Conclusions and Importance: Excessive cobalt levels can result in systemic toxicity leading to visual changes, peripheral neuropathy, hearing loss, cognitive deficits, cardiomyopathy and hypothyroidism. In recent years it has become apparent that cobalt toxicity can be associated with metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty, or the grinding effects of retained ceramic particles from a fractured ceramic head on a cobalt-chromium femoral head prosthesis. Heavy metals (HMs) are not destroyable or degradable and persist in the environment for a long duration. Thus, eliminating and counteracting the HMs pollution of the soil environment is an urgent task to develop a safe and sustainable environment. Plants are in close contact with the soil and can play an important role in soil clean-up, and the process is known as phytoremediation. However, under HM contaminated conditions, plants suffer from several complications, like nutrient and mineral deficiencies, alteration of various physiological and biological processes, which reduces the plant's growth rate. On the other hand, the bioavailability of HMs is another factor for reduced phytoremediation, as most of the HMs are not bioavailable to plants for efficient phytoremediation. The altered plant growth and reduced bioavailability of HMs could be overcome and enhance the phytoremediation efficiency by incorporating either nanotechnology, i.e., nanoparticles (NPs) or plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) along with phytoremediation. Single incorporation of NPs and PGPR might improve the growth rate in plants by enhancing nutrient availability and uptake and also by regulating plant growth regulators under HM contaminated conditions. However, there are certain limitations, like a high dose of NPs that might have toxic effects on plants. Thus, the combination of two techniques such as PGPR and NPs-based remediation can conquer the limitations of individual techniques and consequently enhance phytoremediation efficiency. Considering the negative impacts of HMs on the environment and living organisms, this review is aimed at highlighting the concept of phytoremediation, the single or combined integration of NPs and PGPR to help plants deal with HMs and their basic mechanisms involved in the process of phytoremediation. Additionally, the complications of using NPs and PGPR in the phytoremediation process are discussed to determine future research questions and this will assist to stimulate further research in this field and increase its effectiveness in practical application., (© 2022. Background: Cobalt toxicity has become a health concern in recent years, due to overexposure resulting in neurological impairments like dementia. With a growing interest in the therapeutic roles of herbs, in toxicity research, it's worth looking into the curative effects of aqueous Prosopis africana seed extract, a plant rich in flavonoids on cobalt‐induced dementia‐like and anxiogenic behaviour. Method: We treated rats with Cobalt (CoCl2) or CoCl2 in combination with aqueous Prosopis africana seed extract (PAE) orally for 14 days. Control rats received distilled water for the same period. Following treatments, behavioral experiments for cognition and anxiety, analysis for oxidative stress, inflammation, histological and immunohistochemical analysis were performed. Result: Results revealed that CoCl2 reduced the exploration time, recognition index in the novel object recognition test, percentage spontaneous alternation in the Y‐maze tests, and reduced open arm entry and duration in elevated plus‐maze. However, treatment with PAE improved these parameters to levels comparable with those of the control group. Furthermore, PAE therapy reduced CoCl2‐induced surge in hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, TNF‐α and IL‐1β levels in brain homogenate, while also increasing superoxide dismutase and reduced reduced‐glutathione activities. CoCl2 exposure resulted in obvious features of neurodegeneration like nuclear disintegration, nuclear shrinkage, and cytoplasmic vacuolations of the cells of the hippocampus and amygdala, with an increased expression of GFAP. The hippocampal and amygdala histology improved after PAE administration, while exacerbated GFAP expressions were attenuated. Conclusion: These findings imply that PAE may be anxiolytic and can help reduce cognitive impairments and hippocampal damage caused by CoCl2 neurotoxicity, via mechanisms that involve attenuation of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. Objective: The study investigated maternal exposure to heavy metals from industrial sources during pregnancy as potential risk factors for childhood cancer., Methods: Cases ages 0-19 were identified from California Cancer Registry. Controls (20:1 ratio) were randomly selected from California Birth Registry, frequency-matched by birth year (1998-2016). We estimated maternal exposure to lead, nickel, and cobalt in ambient air from the Toxics Release Inventory. We examined "ever/never" and "high/low" exposures categorized by median exposure. Models were adjusted for maternal age, race/ethnicity, method of payment for prenatal care, neighborhood socioeconomic status, and urban/rural residence., Results: Among highly exposed persons, lead was associated with an increased teratoma risk (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.52; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.97, 2.37), whereas nickel was associated with an increased rhabdomyosarcoma risk (aOR: 1.45; 95% CI: 1.03, 2.04). Cobalt was associated with an increased glioma risk (aOR: 2.25; 95% CI: 1.39, 3.65) among ever-exposed persons. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the toxic effects of CoCl 2 -induced hepatotoxicity and fatty acid changes in juvenile Cyprinus carpio. Fish were divided into six experimental groups in duplicate. The first group served as controls. The second group received the lowest exposure dose at 2.5 µg/L. In the third group, fish were exposed to 25 µg/L of CoCl 2 . The fourth group was exposed to 50 µg/L of CoCl 2 . The last two groups were exposed to the highest doses, 100 and 500 µg/L of CoCl 2 . Total antioxidant activities were estimated using a colorimetric method. Liver fatty acid compositions were analyzed by high-performance gas chromatography (GC). Hepatopathy was identified through microscopic analysis. Exposure of C. carpio to CoCl 2 resulted in hepatotoxicity, indicated by increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), protein carbonyls (PCO), and alterations in the ferric reducing antioxidant power system (FRAP). Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), reduced glutathione (GSH), metallothioneins (MTs), and low thiol levels (L-SH) significantly increased, particularly under exposure to the highest CoCl 2 doses (100 and 500 µg/L). Acetylcholinesterase activity decreased significantly in C. carpio exposed to graded CoCl 2 doses. Additionally, there was a decrease in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), primarily n-3 PUFA, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), while an increase in monounsaturated (MUFA) and saturated fatty acids (SFA), including palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0), palmitoleic (C16:1), and oleic (C18:1) acids, was observed. Histopathological examination of the liver confirmed hepatopathy revealing characteristic tissue changes such as leucocyte infiltration, hepatic cell membrane degradation, vacuolization, and lipid inclusions. Objective: This article aims to assess the reproducibility of Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) data-driven studies by analyzing the data queries used in their research processes., Methods: Studies using MAUDE data were sourced from PubMed by searching for "MAUDE" or "Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience" in titles or abstracts. We manually chose articles with executable queries. The reproducibility of each query was assessed by replicating it in the MAUDE Application Programming Interface. The reproducibility of a query is determined by a reproducibility coefficient that ranges from 0.95 to 1.05. This coefficient is calculated by comparing the number of medical device reports (MDRs) returned by the reproduced queries to the number of reported MDRs in the original studies. We also computed the reproducibility ratio, which is the fraction of reproducible queries in subgroups divided by the query complexity, the device category, and the presence of a data processing flow., Results: As of August 8, 2022, we identified 523 articles from which 336 contained queries, and 60 of these were executable. Among these, 14 queries were reproducible. Queries using a single field like product code, product class, or brand name showed higher reproducibility (50%, 33.3%, 31.3%) compared with other fields (8.3%, P = 0.037). Single-category device queries exhibited a higher reproducibility ratio than multicategory ones, but without statistical significance (27.1% versus 8.3%, P = 0.321). Studies including a data processing flow had a higher reproducibility ratio than those without, although this difference was not statistically significant (42.9% versus 17.4%, P = 0.107)., Conclusions: Our findings indicate that the reproducibility of queries in MAUDE data-driven studies is limited. The attendant effects of urbanization on the environment and human health are evaluable by measuring the potentially harmful element (PHE) concentrations in environmental media such as stream sediments. To evaluate the effect of urbanization in Osogbo Metropolis, the quality of stream sediments from a densely-populated area with commercial/industrial activities was contrasted with sediments from a sparsely-populated area with minimal anthropogenic input.Forty samples were obtained: 29 from Okoko stream draining a Residential/Commercial Area (RCA, n = 14) and an Industrial Area (IA, n = 15), and 11 from Omu stream draining a sparsely-populated area (SPA). The samples were air-dried, sieved to < 75 micron fraction, and analysed for PHEs using inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Index of geoaccumulation (I geo ), pollution index (PI), ecological risk factor (Er) and index (ERI) were used for assessment. Inter-elemental relationships and source identification were done using Pearson's correlation matrix and principal component analysis (PCA).PHE concentrations in the stream sediments were RCA: Zn > Pb > Cu > Cr > Sr > Ni > Co, IA: Zn > Cr > Ni > Co > Pb > Cu > Sr and SPA: Zn > Co > Cr > Cu > Sr > Ni > Pb. I geo calculations revealed moderate-heavy contamination of Cu, Pb and Zn in parts of RCA, moderate-heavy contamination of Zn in IA while SPA had moderate contamination of Co and Zn. PI values revealed that stream sediments of RCA are extremely polluted, while those of IA and SPA are moderately and slightly polluted, respectively.The pollution of the stream sediments in RCA and IA is adduced to anthropogenic activities like vehicular traffic, automobile repairs/painting, blacksmithing/welding and metal scraping. Introduction: Cobalt is a mitochondrial toxin, clinical cobaltism manifests with constitutional, neurologic, and cardiovascular symptomatology. Cobalt's severe toxidrome is known through case reports from extreme wear or corrosion of cobalt-chromium arthroplasty components. However, the spectrum and epidemiology of orthopedic-implant cobaltism and its relationship to duration and degree of cobalt exposure are not well defined. Methods: The relationship of urine-cobalt concentration and duration of exposure to cobalt-chromium joint implants and cobaltism symptomatology were prospectively studied in 229 patients. Subjects received a Cobaltism-Symptom-Inventory-Score (CSIS) based on a protocolized interview and examination followed by a spot urine-cobalt measurement. Results: 129 (56%) subjects were cobalturic (urine-cobalt ≥1.0 ppb). 122 (53%) subjects had a CSIS of >2, this status significantly associates with cobalturia. Median [IQR] urine-cobalt in the subjects with a CSIS >2 was 4.1[1.1–17.0] ppb compared to 0.5[0.5–1.4] ppb in subjects with CSIS ≤ 2. Cobalturia has a sensitivity of 0.69, a specificity of 0.77, and a positive predictive value of 0.74 for a CSIS of >2. The product of years-exposed to a cobalt-chromium implant and urine-cobalt by quartiles significantly positively associates with the Cobaltism-Symptom-Inventory-Score. Conclusion: A urine-cobalt of ≥1 ppb likely indicates adverse systemic exposure to orthopedic-implant generated cobalt. Cobaltism severity as quantified by the CSIS significantly correlates with the product of spot urine-cobalt concentration and years-exposed to a cobalt-chromium orthopedic-implant indicating a dose-response relationship. Medical provider and public awareness of orthopedic-implant cobaltism is vital because tens-of-millions are at-risk and early cobaltism is reversible. Further use of cobalt-chromium orthopedic-implants should be questioned given cobaltism becomes clinically apparent at a spot urine-cobalt of 1 ppb or greater. The growing demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in smartphones, electric vehicles (EVs), and other energy storage devices should be correlated with their environmental impacts from production to usage and recycling. As the use of LIBs grows, so does the number of waste LIBs, demanding a recycling procedure as a sustainable resource and safer for the environment. This review paper analyses and categorizes the environmental impacts of LIBs from mining their constituents, their usage and applications, illegal disposal, and recycling. Compared to recycling, reusing recovered materials for battery manufacturing would lessen the environmental footprints and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and energy consumption. Thus, to prevent pollution and safeguard the environment, it is necessary to consider recycling spent LIBs and improving production and disposal methods. The present study offers a comprehensive overview of the environmental impacts of batteries from their production to use and recycling and the way forward to its importance in metal replenishment. Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to measure the serum metal ion levels (titanium, cobalt, chromium) in patients who have metal implants in the maxillofacial region. Methods: The investigators implemented a cross sectional study on patients treated with procedures requiring metal implants for management of maxillofacial trauma, fixation for orthognathic surgery, and total temporomandibular joint replacement (TJR). Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used as an analytical method to detect metal ions in serum samples. Results: The study comprised of 50 patients who were divided into 4 groups- group I- total TJR (n = 18), group II- orthognathic (n = 8), group III- trauma (n = 8), and group IV- control (n = 16). The mean values of metal ions level were raised than the control group. Conclusion: The present study's results suggest a rise in serum metal ion levels after the metal implantation in maxillofacial region. None of the patients had any abnormal signs and symptoms due to raised metal levels. Further studies are warranted to correlate the serum metal ion levels and their clinical relevance.
