This paper reviews literatures on the two competing theoretical views of the antitakeover provisions-shareholder value relationship -managerial entrenchment and shareholder interests -- and offers a contingency framework to reconcile these views. This framework, based on a broader agency theory perspective and the organizational literatures on power, incorporates two key moderators: corporate board and shareholder monitoring, and draws attention to when rather than on whether antitakeover provisions enhance or erode shareholder value.[1] [copyright] 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. Summary The photoperiodic sensitivity 5 (se5 ) mutant of rice, a short-day plant, has a very early flowering phenotype and is completely deficient in photoperiodic response. We have cloned the SE5 gene by candidate cloning and demonstrated that it encodes a putative heme oxygenase. Lack of responses of coleoptile elongation by light pulses and photoreversible phytochromes in crude extracts of se5 indicate that SE5 may function in phytochrome chromophore biosynthesis. Ectopic expression of SE5 cDNA by the CaMV 35S promoter restored the photoperiodic response in the se5 mutant. Our results indicate that phytochromes confer the photoperiodic control of flowering in rice. Comparison of se5 with hy1 , a counterpart mutant of Arabidopsis , suggests distinct roles of phytochromes in the photoperiodic control of flowering in these two species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary Blue light induces extracellular acidification, a prerequisite of cell expansion, in epidermis cells of young pea leaves, by stimulation of the proton pumping-ATPase activity in the plasma membrane. A transient acidification, reaching a maximum 2.5–5 min after the start of the pulse, could be induced by pulses as short as 30 msec. A pulse of more than 3000 μmol m-2 saturated this response. Responsiveness to a second light pulse was recovered with a time constant of about 7 min. The fluence rate-dependent lag time and sigmoidal increase of the acidification suggested the involvement of several reactions between light perception and activation of the ATPase. In wild-type pea plants, the fluence response relation for short light pulses was biphasic, with a component that saturates at low fluence and one that saturates at high fluence. The phytochrome-deficient mutant pcd2 showed a selective loss of the high-fluence component, suggesting that the high-fluence component is phytochrome-dependent and the low-fluence component is phytochrome-independent. Treatment with the calmodulin inhibitor W7 also led to the elimination of the phytochrome-dependent high-fluence component. Simple models adapted from the one used to simulate blue light-induced guard cell opening failed to explain one or more elements of the experimental data. The hypothesis that phytochrome and a blue light receptor interact in a short-term photoresponse is endorsed by model calculations based upon a three-step signal transduction cascade, of which one component can be modulated by phytochrome. The phytobilin chromophores of phycobiliproteins and phytochromes are biosynthesized from heme in a pathway that begins with the opening of the tetrapyrrole macrocycle of protoheme to form biliverdin IXα, in a reaction catalyzed by heme oxygenase. An Arabidopsis thaliana hy1 mutant was previously shown to be deficient in phytochrome responses, and these responses were regained when the plants were administered biliverdin IXα. A heme oxygenase-encoding gene, ho1, was recently cloned from the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. When ho1 was expressed in Escherichia coli, the cells produced active ferredoxin-dependent soluble heme oxygenase. The open reading frame of ho1 was fused in frame with a chloroplast transit peptide-encoding sequence from the oli gene of Antirrhinum majus. This construct was placed in a binary plasmid vector containing a kanamycin resistance marker and a cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter to control expression of the chimeric oli-ho1 gene and used to transform A. thaliana hy1 plants. Two independent transformed lines were obtained that had the phenotype of the parental Landsberg erecta line and expressed the chimeric gene, as indicated by detection of its mRNA by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. The results indicate that Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 heme oxygenase encoded by ho1 can substitute for the defective HY1 gene product and that the only required enzyme activity of the HY1 gene product is heme oxygenase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using peroxidase-labelled antibodies, the ultrastructural localization of IgA and secretory component (SC) was investigated in duodeno-jejunal biopsies from six children with coeliac disease and compared with that observed in non-coeliac mucosa. In normal intestinal mucosa this study confirmed the presence of IgA in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and the perinuclear space of numerous subepithelial plasma cells and on the lateral cell membranes of villous and especially crypt epithelial cells. SC was only detected in the epithelium and principally in crypt epithelium where in was identified in endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi saccules, perinuclear spaces and on lateral cell membranes. These findings support the suggestion that SC is synthesized mainly in crypt epithelium and acts as a receptor on epithelial cell membranes for dimeric IgA. In untreated coeliac patients. SC was observed at the same sites, but SC staining was reduced in damaged surface epithelial cells. The number of IgA immunocytes was increased and heavy deposits of IgA were found on basement membranes. In post-treatment biopsies, no abnormality was apparent. After re-exposure to gluten, depositions of IgA on basement membranes were the only early change. The unaltered distribution of SC and IgA in crypt epithelium strongly suggests that the epithelial transport mechanism of secretory IgA is normal in coeliac disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The magnetic separatrix in a diverted tokamak determines the boundary between closed and open magnetic field lines. Even though the main influences on the physics of SOL and core regions may be different and shift from the plasma-neutral coupling and impurity radiation in the scrape-off layer (SOL) to anomalous plasma transport in the core, the influence of this boundary persists over some width, both into the core region and into the SOL. We give a short review of the progress in the divertor-SOL physics and discuss the links between edge core and SOL plasmas which are likely to have an important role in different edge-plasma phenomena. We have performed two dimensional fluid B2 simulations on detached recombining plasmas to compare with experimental observations in a linear divertor plasma simulator. In detached helium plasmas associated with volumetric electron-ion recombination (collisional radiative recombination), an electron-ion energy exchange process followed by ion-neutral charge exchange is found to be a key to reduce the electron temperature along the magnetic field to be less than leV. We have applied the representational difference analysis (RDA) to isolate genetic markers for a deletion on the rat chromosome RNO5q22–33. This deletion occured in anchorage independent sublines of a normal rat fibroblast × mouse hepatoma cell hybrid (BS181), (Islam 1989). Normal rat tissue DNA provided the “tester” and the BS181 hybrid DNA the “driver” in the RDA hybridization/selection reactions. Out of twelve RDA derived DNA sequences that were analyzed in detail using a rat × mouse cell hybrid panel for chromosome mapping, nine (75%) were found to represent RRO5 deletions, whereas the other three were new RFLPs mapping to other chromosomes. In two cases, the RDA sequences were also analyzed by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and found to give distinct signals in the RNOq22–33 region. This result emphasizes the significance of the previous cytogenetic analysis of this hybrid, which indicated the presence of a gene for the suppression of anchorage independence, Sai 1, in this deletion region. The RDA derived sequences isolated by this, work will provide a valuable source of new genetic markers for the further detailed analysis of the Sai 1 deletion region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fractions of IgG from sera of patients with pemphigoid and pemphigus added to monolayer cultures of mouse epidermal cells resulted in a sparse distribution of cells. Direct immunofluorescence studies of these monolayers revealed epidermal cell surface antigens reacting with pemphigoid and pemphigus antibodies. We suggest that these antibodies may bind to epidermal cell surface antigenic molecules which are important in maintaining epidermal cell adhesion in culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The action of pharmacological agents on chymase-induced exocytosis of β-hexosaminidase and arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism by rat serosal mast cells (RSMC) was determined and compared with their effects on anti-IgE induced activation. Indomethacin (INDO) (≤ 10 μM), a cyclooxygenase inhibitor, did not affect chymase- or anti-IgE-mediated exocytosis, while completely inhibiting prostaglandin D&sub2; (PGD2) release at 1.25 μM. Theophylline (THEO), mepacrine, 3-amino-1-[m-(trifluoromethyl)-phenyl]- 2-pyrazoline (BW755C), and diethylcarbamazine (DEC), inhibitors of adenosinc binding and phosphodiesterases, phospholipases. AA metabolism, and vesicular transport as well as leukotriene A4 formation, respectively, inhibited exocytosis with ID50 values of 3.4. 0.22, 3.4 and 1.9 mM for chymase and 2.4, 0.17, 2.8 and 5.2 mM for anti-IgE. These agents inhibited net PGD2 release with ID50 values of 2.1, 0.04, <0.05, and 1.5 mM for chymase and of 0.5, 0.1, <0.05, and 4 mM for anti-IgE. 5,6-Dehydroarachidonic acid (DHA) and arachidonyl hydroxylamine (AH), 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors, did not affect chymase-mediated exocytosis; anti-IgE-mediated exocytosis was not altered by AH but was suppressed by DHA (ID50=20 μM). Nordihydroguaiaretic acid (N DGA), an antioxidant, inhibited chymase-mediated exocytosis dose-dependently (lD50 ≤13.3 μM) while decreasing anti-IgE- mediated exocytosis by only 30% at 2.5-20 μM; net PGD2 release induced by both stimuli was inhibited dose-dependently. 2',5'-Dideoxyadenosine (DDA) and 1,6-di(0-(carbamoyl)cyclohexanone oxime)hexane (RHC 80267) and inhibitors of adenylate cyclase and of di-triglyceride lipases, respectively, had little effect on exocytosis induced by chymase but inhibited that induced by anti-IgE with ID50 values of 0'4 mM and 37 μM, respectively. With DDA the inhibition of net PGD2 release occurred with anti-IgE but not chymase, whereas RHC 80267 inhibited both chymase and anti-IgE-mediated PGD2 release. Differential inhibition of activation-secretion suggests either that chymase provides a step inhibited in IgE-mediated exocytosis by DDA, RHC 80267 and DHA, or that the activating pathway initiated by chymase is distinct. Previous studies have shown that monoclonal antibody AF3.44.4 has specificity for a constant region determinant on mouse antigen-specific helper factors and that it also binds to cultured T cells with functional helper cell characteristics. The antibody synergizes with antigen to enhance in vitro antibody responses; here we demonstrate that it will also enhance cell-mediated responses in vitro such as in the generation of proliferating cells in mixed lymphocyte responses and in the generation of specific killer cells in cytotoxic T lymphocyte cultures. The mechanism of AF3.44.4-generated enhancement was investigated. Increased levels of the lymphokines IL-2 and BCDF were detected in supernatants of AF3.44.4-treated cultures but the antibody itself could not replace interleukin-2 (IL-2), and would not stimulate primed cells in the absence of antigen. This type of monoclonal antibody which augments immunological responses in an antigen-dependent fashion may provide a new class of immunostimulant and a new approach to augmenting the responses of weak immunogens. The aphototropic mutant line ptrll6 of the moss Ceratodon purpureus shows characteristics of a deficiency in the phytochrome chromophore. Photoreversibility measurements indicate an approximately 20 time lower concentration of spectrally active phytochrome compared to wild-type, whereas normal phytochrome apoprotein levels are found on immunoblots. Feeding with the tetrapyrroles biliverdin, the proposed precursor of the phytochrome chromophore, or phycocyanobilin, which may replace the phytochrome chromophore, resulted in the rescue of ptrll6 phototropism.The ptrll6 mutant and the phenotypically-related mutant ptrl contain lower chlorophyll levels than the wild-type. Chlorophyll content of wildtype and mutant tissue grown under different light conditions was estimated using conventional spectrophotometry of extracts and fluorimetrically, on single apical cells. Dark-grown tissue contained about 100 times less chlorophyll than tissue grown under standard white light conditions. Red light given for 24 h to dark adapted filaments induced an increase in the chlorophyll content in the wildtype, but not in ptrl16. Blue light induced an increase in chlorophyll both in wildtype and in ptrl16. The red light effect on the wildtype was partially reversible with far-red. If ptrl16 was grown on phycocyanobilin, an increase in chlorophyll was also found when cells were irradiated with red light.The results indicate that phytochrome as well as a blue light photoreceptor regulate chlorophyll accumulation in C. purpureus protonemata. It can be assumed that in ptrll6, the synthesis of the phytochrome chromophore is blocked specifically beyond the synthesis common to chlorophyll and the phytochrome chromophore and affects an enzymatic step between protoporphyrin and biliverdin. Boards of directors have been the subject of extensive conceptualization and empirical research. We review literature addressing boards of directors from the perspective of the control, service, and resource dependence roles that directors are hypothesized to fulfill, with particular focus on that research reported after the Zahra and Pearce (1989) compendium. The kinetics of development of antibodysynthesizing cells and of cells synthesizing immunoglobulins without detectable antibody function 'were studied in rats immunized with different doses (0-1, 1, 10, 100 mg) of horse radish peroxidase, bovine serum albumin, human serum albumin, hen ovalbumin, or human IgG, which had been de-aggregated or heat-aggregated. Each antigen was injected once or twice as a solution in saline. Antibody and immunoglobuiin-producing cells were detected in draining lymph nodes by immunohistochemical staining. In the primary response a few antibody-synthesizing cells were found whatever the dose injected. No increase or some increase was found with the amount of antigen injected, according to the protein used, but with all doses of antigen injected, the population of cells remained small, except with human IgG where a relatively high number of positive cells was detected even after injection of 1 mg of antigen. In the secondary response a few antibody-forming cells were also detected with the lower doses of antigen, but this population increased after boosting with 100 mg of antigen. With human IgG a greater number of positive cells was induced with all the doses tested. A correlation between the number of cells synthesizing immunoglobulins without antibody function and the amount of antigen injected was observed in the primary and secondary responses. The relative size of these two populations varied with the stage of immunity of the animals. In the primary response, the population of cells synthesizing immunoglobulins without antibody function was larger than the population of antibody-forming cells. The same was true in the secondary response, but if after a booster injection the level of antibody-synthesizing cells exceeded that reached in the primary response, the increase of cells synthesizing Ig without antibody function was smaller than the increase in antibodyforming cells. The effect of lysozyme from three different sources- Staphylococcus aureus, hen egg white, and human urine-on adhesion to substrate and spreading of trypsinized human fibroblasts was studied. Several fibroblast strains were tested under various conditions. It was found that the different cell strains did not show the same capability of spreading and stably attaching to substrates when resuspended in media not containing serum. Some strains did not spread, whereas others spread even in the absence of serum. Cell spreading in these strains did not occur when the cells were pregrown for 5 weeks in media supplemented with 1% fetal bovine serum. Lysozyme from S. aureus allowed stable adhesion to substrate and spreading of all the fibroblast strains unable to elongate in nonsupplemented minimal essential medium. This enzyme accelerated and augmented spreading of the strains capable of elongating in the absence of serum. S. aureus lysozyme also allowed spreading and stable adhesion to substrates of all these strains when they were pregrown for 5 weeks in the presence of 1% fetal bovine serum. Furthermore, hen egg white lysozyme and the lysozyme purified from human urine were both capable of stimulating anchorage to substrate and spreading of trypsinized fibroblasts although their effect was less pronounced than that of the S. aureus lysozyme. Some tentative hypotheses for the mechanism of cell spreading in the presence of lysozyme are made. The possibility that lysozymes, virtually ubiquitous enzymes, may play a specific role in nature in the regulation of cell differentiation and tissue development is finally raised and discussed in light of several previous observations and findings. Ultrasonography, although an accurate method of detecting stones within the gall bladder, is unreliable for the detection of bile duct stones for which per-operative cholangiography remains the standard investigation. Fifty seven patients undergoing elective cholecystectomy had both a pre-operative intravenous cholangiogram and per-operative cholangiography. The pre-operative investigation is shown to be at least as effective in the detection of common bile duct stones and only missed a duct stone in one patient. The substitution of pre-operative intravenous cholangiography for routine per-operative cholangiography would result in a significant reduction in operating time, may provide advance knowledge on the biliary anatomy and would allow advance planning of the likely procedure. It is suggested that pre-operative intravenous cholangiography, carried out on the day of admission, should be considered as a preferred alternative investigation to per-operative cholangiography. Protein A from Staphylococcus aureus is widely known as a ligand specific for the Fc portion of the IgG molecule. However, recent reports suggest that a minor proportion of immunoglobulins may also carry protein-A-reactive sites in their Fab portion. I found that about 5% of polyclonal Fabγ and Fabα fragments strongly bound protein A. Moreover, 2 of 18 human IgG myelomas showed a similar reactivity. This interaction was not due to a conventional anti-protein-A antibody activity, since it was possible to obtain F(ab')2, from human IgG anti-tetanus toxoid, and Fab, from mouse IgG anti-sheep erythrocytes, which were able to bind protein A and the immunogen. The finding that a proportion of Fv fragments (VH + VL domain), obtained from normal human IgM, also interacts with protein A suggests that the reactive site is located within the framework of the variable portion of a subset of immunoglobins. The ability of these F(ab')2 fragments to inhibit efficiently the binding of [125I]protein. A to immobolized human Fcγ fragments, suggests that these immunoglobulins express, within their variable regions, determinants that possess Fcγ-like properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anti-lymphocytic antibodies (ALA) have been described in a variety of autoimmune disorders. We have investigated the presence of ALA in autoimmune chronic active hepatitis (aCAH) starting in childhood. Using a modified Terasaki technique ALA were found in 17 of 18 patients with aCAH but in only one of 15 patients with alpha-1-anti-trypsin deficiency or Wilson's disease and three of 27 aged-matched healthy controls (P < 0.0005 for both). Sera from 12 patients with uncontrolled aCAH had significantly higher cytotoxicity values than sera from six children with inactive disease (P < 0.01). ALA were directed to T but not B lymphocytes and were not reactive with specific HLA antigens. No preferential killing was observed against CD4 or CD8 positive T lymphocytes. Characterization of ALA revealed them to be cold-reactive IgM. The possible role of ALA in aCAH is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purified IgG from murine alloimmune sera directed against class 1 products from the major histocompatibility complex of the mouse, could bind to the β-adrenoceptors and stimulate contractile activity of myocardium. Immune IgG inhibited the binding of (-) ³H-DHA to β-adrenoceptors of mouse myocardial membranes behaving as a competitive inhibitor, Moreover, immune IgG induced positive inotropic and chronotropic effects on isolated mouse atria. These effects could be blocked by β-adrenoceptors antagonists. Data prove that immune IgG directed against specific alloantigens are able to recognize the β-adrenoceptors and mimic the stimulation of the β-adrenoceptor agonist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Porcine hyaline articular cartilage (HAC) has been used to investigate the interaction of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and anti-BSA with articular collagenous tissues in vitro. There was a marked retention of 125I-labelled BSA by plugs of HAC (a) exposed to rabbit anti-BSA for 1-2 h at 37°C prior to a similar incubation with the antigen, or (b) exposed to the antigen and then to antibody. The specifically retained radiolabelled BSA was localized in or at the articular surface of the plugs. In the absence of specific antibody a relatively small amount of the antigen was retained. Exposure of HAC to multiple cycles of antibody and antigen treatment resulted in an increased retention of the 125I-BSA. There was a concomitant increase in the retention of the anti-BSA and the capacity of the treated plugs to fix complement. The forces that maintained the labelled antigen in the tissue were not readily reversed by excess unlabelled BSA. Pre-formed, soluble BSA/anti-BSA complexes did not appear to penetrate the tissue unless the HAC was first exposed to anti-BSA. The results suggest that the antibody-mediated, surface oriented retention of 125I-BSA results from the formation of immune complexes in the tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In vitro human monocytes from normal blood donors ingest red blood cells infected with Plasmodium falciparum more efficiently than normal red blood cells (NRBC). The phagocytic activity of human monocytes for infected red blood cells (IRBC) is greatly enhanced by the addition of immune sera obtained from individuals living in areas with endemic malaria. In contrast, the addition of sera obtained from individuals recovering from a first infection, or pooled normal sera, does not result in increased phagocytosis of IRBC. The phagocytosis enhancing activity of immune sera is associated with the IgG fraction and IgG depleted sera do not stimulate phagocytosis. Enhanced immune serum mediated phagocytosis occurs as a result of opsonization of IRBC. This was demonstrated by experiments in which monocytes or IRBC were preincubated with immune serum prior to the phagocytic assay. The opsonic activity could be absorbed by IRBC but not by NRBC. The opsonization of IRBC and subsequent phagocytosis were also dependent on the stage of development of the intracellular parasite. IRBC containing schizonts and trophozoites were preferentially phagocytosed as compared with ring forms. The role of malaria induced surface alterations and/or malaria surface antigens in the opsonization of IRBC by immune sera is discussed. These experiments suggest that phagocytosis of P. falciparum IRBC by monocytes may play a role in the immune elimination of malaria infection in humans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have studied the effect of dialysates from lung cancer homogenates to alter both the expression of complement (C3b) receptors per se and also to inhibit leucoattractant-induced enhancement of complement rosettes on monocytes from healthy individuals. Enhancement and enhancement-inhibition by tumour extracts were compared with material derived from normal lung excised some distance from the tumour. There was no significant difference between tumour homogenate (TH) and normal lung homogenate (NLH)in terms of enhancement of complement rosettes per se. In contrast, TH produced a dose- and time-dependent inhibition of leucoattractant-induced enhancement of C3b rosettes which was significantly different from that obtained with NLH. This enhancement-inhibition was observed with four undifferentiated, four squamous and three adenocarcinomas of lung. The degree of enhancement-inhibition was not related to the type of tumour or varying accompanying histological features such as necrosis and the degree of infiltration with inflammatory cells. Following gel filtration on Sephadex G-50 each type of cancer gave a major peak of inhibitory activity which eluted with molecules having an apparent molecular size of approximately 3.000 daltons. A second larger peak (8,000-10,000 daltons) was also detectable with extracts from the undifferentiated and adenocarcinomas. Antibodies in human sera against four different antigens of human spermatozoa discovered by means of an indirect two-layer immunofluorescence technique (IFT) were characterized by determination of the class of immunoglobulins to which they belonged. A three-layer IFT using monospecific antisera against human IgG, IgA or IgM as the second layer was employed together with fractionation of sera on Sephadex G-200 or DEAE-cellulose followed by testing of the concentrated pools in a two-layer IFT. The study revealed that antibodies against the antigen in the front part of the acrosome were primarily IgM and those against the antigen in the tail primarily IgG. Antibodies against antigens in the equatorial segment and the postnuclear cap showed a varying predominance of these two immunoglobulins. Spermatozoal antibody as IgA was found only in small amounts. Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is often without clear underlying pathology. Affective disturbance and dysfunctional pain mechanisms, commonly observed in populations with CLBP, have, therefore, been suggested as potential contributors to CLBP development and maintenance. However, little consensus exists on how these features interact and if they can be targeted using non-invasive brain stimulation. In this pilot trial, 12 participants completed two phases (Active or Sham) of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) to the medial prefrontal cortex, applied for 20 min on three consecutive days. Clinical pain ratings, questionnaires, and sensitivity to painful cuff pressure were completed at baseline, then 4 trials of conditioned pain modulation (CPM; alone, with distraction using a Flanker task, with positive affect induction, and with negative affect induction using an image slideshow) were performed prior to HD-tDCS on Day 1 and Day 4 (24 h post-HD-tDCS). At baseline, attentional and affective manipulations were effective in inducing the desired state (p < 0.001) but did not significantly change the magnitude of CPM-effect. Active HD-tDCS was unable to significantly alter the magnitude of the shift in valence and arousal due to affective manipulations, nor did it alter the magnitude of CPM under any basal, attentional, or affective manipulation trial significantly on Day 4 compared to sham. The CPM-effect was greater across all manipulations on Day 1 than Day 4 (p < 0.02) but also showed poor reliability across days. Future work is needed to expand upon these findings and better understand how and if HD-tDCS can be used to enhance attentional and affective effects on pain modulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nociceptive withdrawal reflex (NWR) is used to probe spinal cord excitability in chronic pain states. Here, we used an automated and unbiased procedure for determining the NWR threshold and compared the reflex thresholds and corresponding pain ratings in a well-characterized cohort of fibromyalgia (n = 29) and matched healthy controls (n = 21). Surface electrical stimuli were delivered to the foot in a stepwise incremental and decremental manner. The surface electromyographic activity was recorded from the ipsilateral tibialis anterior muscle. Fibromyalgia patients reported significantly higher scores for psychological distress and pain-related disability and a significantly lower score for perceived state of health compared to the matched controls. The subjective pain ratings were significantly higher in patients. The NWR thresholds were similar to the controls. In the patients, but not in controls, the NWR thresholds and subjective pain ratings were significantly correlated. Our results showed an increased subjective pain sensitivity in fibromyalgia, but we found no evidence for spinal sensitization based on the reflex measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To comprehensively evaluate the changes in precipitation patterns in the context of global climate change and urbanization, the spatiotemporal variability of precipitation during the wet seasons of 1981–2017 in Beijing was analyzed in this study using up-to-date daily and hourly precipitation data from observation stations. It was concluded that the average annual precipitation in wet seasons showed a downward trend, while the simple daily intensity index (SDII) showed an upward trend. Precipitation in the central urban area of Beijing showed obvious changes from 1981 to 2017; the average annual precipitation in the central urban area was almost as great as that in Miyun country after 2010, which was the storm center for the past three decades. The average annual maximum 3-h and 6-h precipitation in the 2010s was higher than the past three decades, especially in urban and suburban areas. Advancements in nucleic acid sequencing technology combined with an unprecedented availability of metadata have revealed that 45% of the human genome constituted by transposable elements (TEs) is not only transcriptionally active but also physiologically necessary. Dysregulation of TEs, including human retroviral endogenous sequences (HERVs) has been shown to associate with several neurologic and autoimmune diseases, including Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). However, no study has yet addressed whether abnormal expression of these sequences correlates with fibromyalgia (FM), a disease frequently comorbid with ME/CFS. The work presented here shows, for the first time, that, in fact, HERVs of the H, K and W types are overexpressed in immune cells of FM patients with or without comorbid ME/CFS. Patients with increased HERV expression (N = 14) presented increased levels of interferon (INF-β and INF-γ) but unchanged levels of TNF-α. The findings reported in this study could explain the flu-like symptoms FM patients present with in clinical practice, in the absence of concomitant infections. Synthesis of new chromium(II) complexes with chelating bis(alkoxide) ligand [OO]Ph (H2[OO]Ph = [1,1′:4′,1′'-terphenyl]-2,2′'-diylbis(diphenylmethanol)) and their subsequent reactivity in the context of catalytic production of carbodiimides from azides and isocyanides are described. Two different Cr(II) complexes are obtained, as a function of the crystallization solvent: mononuclear Cr[OO]Ph(THF)2 (in toluene/THF, THF = tetrahydrofuran) and dinuclear Cr2([OO]Ph)2 (in CH2Cl2/THF). The electronic structure and bonding in Cr[OO]Ph(THF)2 were probed by density functional theory calculations. Isolated Cr2([OO]Ph)2 undergoes facile reaction with 4-MeC6H4N3, 4-MeOC6H4N3, or 3,5-Me2C6H3N3 to yield diamagnetic Cr(VI) bis(imido) complexes; a structure of Cr[OO]Ph(N(4-MeC6H4))2 was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The reaction of Cr2([OO]Ph)2 with bulkier azides N3R (MesN3, AdN3) forms paramagnetic products, formulated as Cr[OO]Ph(NR). The attempted formation of a Cr–alkylidene complex (using N2CPh2) instead forms chromium(VI) bis(diphenylmethylenehydrazido) complex Cr[OO]Ph(NNCPh2)2. Catalytic formation of carbodiimides was investigated for the azide/isocyanide mixtures containing various aryl azides and isocyanides. The formation of carbodiimides was found to depend on the nature of organoazide: whereas bulky mesitylazide led to the formation of carbodiimides with all isocyanides, no carbodiimide formation was observed for 3,5-dimethylphenylazide or 4-methylphenylazide. Treatment of Cr2([OO]Ph)2 or H2[OO]Ph with NO+ leads to the formation of [1,2-b]-dihydroindenofluorene, likely obtained via carbocation-mediated cyclization of the ligand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper conducts a bibliometric review of global research on the role of boards of directors in corporate governance. Boards of directors play a crucial role in the corporate governance of publicly traded firms, as they monitor the performance of top executives on behalf of shareholders and help to set the firm's overall strategic direction. Our review documents most influential articles, authors, and journals in this area. The bibliometric analysis highlights the multi-disciplinary nature of research on boards of directors, covering the fields of finance and economics, accounting and auditing, and management and strategy. Furthermore, co-citation analyses reveal the core theoretical and conceptual articles on agency theory and ownership structure that provide the foundation for research on corporate governance and boards of directors. The review shows that, despite its practical importance, studies on how boards of directors contribute to corporate sustainability represent only a small fraction of the articles in this literature. This highlights the need for more research on this particular topic in the coming years. Moreover, the keyword co-occurrence analysis suggests other emerging research topics in the BDCG knowledge base are in the areas of gender diversity, CSR, and innovation, which pinpoints possible future research directions for scholars in the field. Simple Summary: Understanding the degree to which human interaction may alter natural animal behavior has become increasingly important in developing effective conservation strategies. We examined two populations of northern goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) in Montana and Finland. Goshawks in Finland were not protected until the late 1980s, and prior to this protection were routinely shot, as it was believed that shooting goshawks would keep grouse populations high. In the United States, Goshawk were not shot as a management strategy. Though aggressive nest defense has been characterized throughout North America, goshawks in Finland do not show this same behavior. To quantify aggression, we presented nesting goshawks with an owl decoy, a human mannequin, and a live human and recorded their responses to each of the trial conditions. We used statistics to compare the two populations. Our results suggested that goshawks in Montana exhibit more aggressive nest defense behaviors than those in Finland. While this could be due to some biotic or abiotic factor that we were not able to control for in a study on such a small scale, it is also possible that the results from this study suggest another underlying cause, such as an artificial selection pressure created by shooting goshawks. Light is one of the most important environmental factors that affect many aspects of plant growth, including chlorophyll (Chl) synthesis and flowering time. Here, we identified a rice mutant, yellow leaf and early flowering (ye1), and characterized the gene YE1 by using a map-based cloning method. YE1 encodes a heme oxygenase, which is localized to the chloroplasts. YE1 is expressed in various green tissues, especially in leaves, with a diurnal-rhythmic expression pattern, and its transcripts is also induced by light during leaf-greening. The mutant displays decreased Chl contents with less and disorderly thylakoid lamellar layers in chloroplasts, which reduced the photosynthesis rate. The early flowering phenotype of ye1 was not photoperiod-sensitive. Furthermore, the expression levels of Chl biosynthetic genes were downregulated in ye1 seedlings during de-etiolation responses to light. We also found that rhythmic expression patterns of genes involved in photoperiodic flowering were altered in the mutant. Based on these results, we infer that YE1 plays an important role in light-dependent Chl biogenesis as well as photoperiodic flowering pathway in rice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Measurements of the L-shell X-ray emission of fluorine-like europium ions ([Eu.sup.54+]) were made under controlled laboratory conditions on the EBIT-I electron beam ion trap at Livermore using an X-ray calorimeter, extending such measurements to the middle of the rare earth elements. Comparing the calorimeter spectra with atomic data from the flexible atomic code, we have identified and analyzed several prominent n = 3 [right arrow] n = 2 transitions, including one two-electron, one-photon core changing transition and one electric quadrupole transition.
