Purpose: This study is devoted to optimizing and characterizing the response of a multipoint plastic scintillator detector (mPSD) for application to in vivo dosimetry in high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy. Methods: An exhaustive analysis was carried out in order to obtain an optimized mPSD design that maximizes the scintillation light collection produced by the interaction of ionizing photons. More than 20 prototypes of mPSD were built and tested in order to determine the appropriate order of scintillators relative to the photodetector (distal, center, or proximal) as well as their length as a function of the scintillation light emitted. The available detecting elements are the BCF‐60, BCF‐12, and BCF‐10 scintillators (Saint Gobain Crystals, Hiram, OH, USA), separated from each other by segments of Eska GH‐4001 clear optical fibers (Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan). The contribution of each scintillator to the total spectrum was determined by irradiations in the low energy range (<120 keV). For the best mPSD design, a numerical optimization was done in order to select the optical components [dichroic mirrors, filters, and photomultipliers tubes (PMTs)] that best match the light emission profile. Calculations were performed taking into account the measured scintillation spectrum and light yield, the manufacturer‐reported transmission and attenuation of the optical components, and the experimentally characterized PMT noise. The optimized dosimetric system was used for HDR brachytherapy measurements. The system was independently controlled from the 192Ir source via LabVIEW and read simultaneously using an NI‐DAQ board. Dose measurements as a function of distance from the source were carried out according to TG‐43U1 recommendations. The system performance was quantified in terms of signal to noise ratio (SNR) and signal to background ratio (SBR). Results: For best overall light‐yield emission, it was determined that BCF‐60 should be placed at the distal position, BCF‐12 in the center, and BCF‐10 at the proximal position with respect to the photodetector. This configuration allowed for optimized light transmission through the collecting fiber and avoided inter‐scintillator excitation and self‐absorption effects. The optimal scintillator length found was of 3, 6, and 7 mm for BCF‐10, BCF‐ 12, and BCF‐60, respectively. The optimized luminescence system allowed for signal deconvolution using a multispectral approach, extracting the dose to each element while taking into account the Cerenkov stem effect. Differences between the mPSD measurements and TG‐43U1 remain below 5% in the range of 0.5 to 6.5 cm from the source. The dosimetric system can properly differentiate the scintillation signal from the background for a wide range of dose rate conditions; the SNR was found to be above 5 for dose rates above 22 mGy/s while the minimum SBR measured was 1.8 at 6 mGy/s. Conclusion: Based on the spectral response at different conditions, an mPSD was constructed and optimized for HDR brachytherapy dosimetry. It is sensitive enough to allow multiple simultaneous measurements over a clinically useful distance range, up to 6.5 cm from the source. Over the past several years, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has developed an ultra-low-background proportional counter (ULBPC) technology. The resulting detector is the product of an effort to produce a low-background, physically robust gas proportional counter for applications like radon emanation measurements, groundwater tritium, and Ar. In order to fully take advantage of the inherent low-background properties designed into the ULBPC, a comparably low-background dedicated counting system is required. An ultra-low-background counting system (ULBCS) was recently built in the new shallow underground laboratory at PNNL. With a design depth of 30 m water-equivalent, the shallow underground laboratory provides approximately 100× fewer fast neutrons and 6× fewer muons than a surface location. The ULBCS itself provides additional shielding in the form of active anti-cosmic veto (via 2-in-thick plastic scintillator paddles) and passive borated poly (1 in.), lead (6 in.), and copper (~3 in.) shielding. This work will provide details on PNNL's new shallow underground laboratory, examine the motivation for the design of the counting system, and provide results from the characterization of the ULBCS, including initial detector background. Abstract: We report on the construction and commissioning of the high-efficiency CAESium-iodide scintillator ARray CAESAR, a device designed for in-beam spectroscopy experiments utilizing fast beams of rare isotopes at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University (MSU). CAESAR consists of 192 CsI(Na) crystals, totaling 290kg of active scintillator material. For 1MeV rays, a full-energy-peak efficiency of 35% is achieved at an in-beam energy resolution of better than 10% FWHM after event-by-event Doppler reconstruction of the rays emitted by nuclei moving with velocities of . The spectral quality of the array allows for the identification of transitions with intensities of several 10 counts in the full-energy peak and thus opens new avenues for the study of the most exotic nuclei available at the NSCL for in-beam spectroscopy. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory uses beta-gamma coincidence detectors in a number of xenon sampling and measurement systems to enable simultaneous, sensitive measurements of 131Xe, 133Xe, 133mXe, and 135Xe for treaty monitoring applications. In recent years, a new style of beta–gamma detector was developed to improve upon the detector module used in the Automated Radioxenon Sampler/Analyzer. The results of an MCNP5 Monte Carlo simulation of the new detector cell are presented, with particular emphasis on the identification of an energy deposition sequence with the potential to introduce significant error into the detector efficiency calibration. This sequence occurs when an 81 keV gamma from 133Xe is absorbed in an inactive region of the CsI(Na) scintillator, followed by emission of a 31 keV X-ray from cesium (or possibly a 28.5 keV X-ray from iodine). These X-rays add excess counts into the 31 keV peak observed in the decay of 133Xe. The impact of this effect on different efficiency calibration techniques is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is scheduled to begin deuterium-tritium (DT) shots possibly in the next several years. One of the important diagnostics in understanding capsule behavior and to guide changes in Hohlraum illumination, capsule design, and geometry will be neutron imaging of both the primary 14 MeV neutrons and the lower-energy downscattered neutrons in the 6–13 MeV range. The neutron imaging system (NIS) described here, which we are currently building for use on NIF, uses a precisely aligned set of apertures near the target to form the neutron images on a segmented scintillator. The images are recorded on a gated, intensified charge coupled device. Although the aperture set may be as close as 20 cm to the target, the imaging camera system will be located at a distance of 28 m from the target. At 28 m the camera system is outside the NIF building. Because of the distance and shielding, the imager will be able to obtain images with little background noise. The imager will be capable of imaging downscattered neutrons from failed capsules with yields Yn>1014 neutrons. The shielding will also permit the NIS to function at neutron yields >1018, which is in contrast to most other diagnostics that may not work at high neutron yields. The following describes the current NIF NIS design and compares the predicted performance with the NIF specifications that must be satisfied to generate images that can be interpreted to understand results of a particular shot. The current design, including the aperture, scintillator, camera system, and reconstruction methods, is briefly described. System modeling of the existing Omega NIS and comparison with the Omega data that guided the NIF design based on our Omega results is described. We will show NIS model calculations of the expected NIF images based on component evaluations at Omega. We will also compare the calculated NIF input images with those unfolded from the NIS images generated from our NIS numerical modeling code. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which evaluated a liquid scintillation counting (LSC) method versus the gas proportional counting (GPC) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 900.0 for the detection of gross alpha activity in drinking water. LSC uses nitromethane as the quench agent for establishing counting efficiencies and spillover factors. It relates the problems when the total dissolved solids (TDS) of the sample was used as the quenching agent. It outlines the advantages of the LSC method over the GPC method, including higher counting efficiency and shorter turnaround time.

The development of portable nuclear instrumentation demands compact high sensitivity detectors operated at room temperature. The sensitivity of these detectors mainly depends on two parameters: absolute efficiency and energy resolution. In order to provide high efficiency, large volumes are needed. For semiconductor detectors able to operate at room temperature, the largest effective volumes with acceptable resolution are achieved with CdZnTe coplanar-grid and pixel detectors. On the other hand, new scintillation materials were recently developed with spectrometric capabilities only reachable some years ago with semiconductors. In this work we compare the performance of two state of the art detectors of different technologies with a relative large volume: a coplanar-grid CdZnTe detector with dimensions 15 mm × 15 mm × 10 mm and a LaBr3 (Ce) crystal with volume 18 mm × 18 mm × 30 mm. The CdZnTe crystal was made by Yinnel Tech (USA) and the detector was manufactured by BSI (Latvia). The LaBr3 (Ce) scintillator was grown and encapsulated by Saint-Gobain (France). The energy resolution for the CZT detector is 2.05% FWHM at 662 keV. The resolution for the scintillator at this energy was near 3 %. The total efficiency was studied in a setup with calibrated point sources. The experimental spectra were compared with Monte-Carlo simulations performed with Geant4. The implications of the results of this comparison are discussed in the context of the practical use of these units. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the USA and other countries large numbers of vehicles pass through border crossings each day. The illicit movement of radioactive sources is a concern that has resulted in the installation of radiation detection and identification instruments at border crossing points. This activity is judged to be necessary because of the possibility of an act of terrorism involving a radioactive source that may include any number of dangerous radionuclides. The problem of detecting, identifying and interdicting illicit radioactive sources is complicated by the fact that many materials present in cargo are somewhat radioactive. Some cargo contains naturally occurring radioactive material that may trigger radiation portal monitor alarms. Such nuisance alarms can be an operational limiting factor for screening of cargo at border crossings. Information about the nature of the radioactive materials in cargo that can interfere with the detection of radionuclides of concern is necessary to help anticipate and recognise likely sources of these nuisance alarms. Abstract: A scintillator based hodoscope array was recently constructed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University. The hodoscope will be used to measure the total kinetic energy of fragments in the focal plane of the large S800 magnetic spectrometer at the NSCL to provide atomic charge-state identification. The array consists of 32 closely packed 7.6cm ×7.6cm ×5.1cm CsI(Na) crystals each coupled to a photomultiplier. All of the crystals were characterized with a source prior to installation in the focal plane of the spectrometer. The hodoscope was then tested with a mono-energetic 76Ge primary beam as well as heavy ions from fragmentation reactions. The array is currently in place and has already been used in several recent experiments. The results of characterization of the properties of the crystals are presented here.
