The storage of municipal solid wastes in unengineered landfills poses a severe threat to soil functions and health. Wastes seriously threaten human health and the terrestrial ecosystem, especially due to heavy metals. There is a general knowledge gap about the long-term impacts of storage wastes on the soil health indicators which are effective on soil functions. This investigation focuses on the examination of landfill leachate on soil health indicators from different years in the Hyrcanian forest region in northern Iran. For this purpose, soil sampling was done in the summer of 2012 and 2022 (from three depths of 0-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm and on a surface of 30 cm × 30 cm). Soil samples were randomly collected from a polluted forest used as waste storage and a nearby unpolluted protected forest. In addition to the general soil physical, chemical and biological parameters, the amounts of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in the soil were also measured. Simultaneously with soil sampling, earthworms (from a depth of 0-30 cm) were collected and identified. Also, the concentration of Cd and Pb in the earthworm's biomass were measured in the laboratory. We found that unpolluted sites had maximum values of N, K, P, and Ca than the polluted sites. In addition, a decrease of soil aggregates stability, nutrient contents, microbial and enzyme activities, and also fauna and microflora abundance were found in the polluted sites in the period 2012-2022. Soil Cd and Pb contents were more in the polluted site in 2022 compared to the unpolluted site. Lumbricus rubellus and Lumbricus terrestris earthworms had significantly higher population in the polluted sites and higher accumulation of Cd and Pb in biomass. According to our results, soil health decreased in the order unpolluted site 2022 > unpolluted site 2012 > polluted site 2012 > polluted site 2022, which corresponds with the reduction of soil health during the release of landfill leachate. This investigation contributes to understand landfill pollution derived from leachate and its effects on soil physical, chemical and biological parameters to help managing landfill leachate. Therefore, the main issue is choosing a landfill system that minimizes the risk of pollution, installing a leachate collection system and constructing a landfill with engineering principles that can reduce the effects of urban waste pollution on soil health. Nowadays, academics have paid special attention to global warming, because it has several issues such as urban heat island (UHI) related to the quality of life. For this purpose, a spatial decision support system (SDSS) has been developed to investigate the effect of parcels' roof covering type on surface heat island (SHI) values and its variation at the neighborhood scale in Tehran, Iran. This SDSS, as the innovation of the present research, consists of two main steps including estimating the UHI value in the study area and adopting the optimum set of parcels to change their roofs' cover with three types of vegetation, high-albedo material, and flagstone. The first step is accomplished by aggregating various indices related to land cover obtained from Landsat 8 images. The aggregation is done by linear regression method (LRM) with an RMSE and R 2 equal to 0.942 and 0.897, respectively. Then, the genetic algorithm was used to select the optimal subset, including 10% of the parcels in the area, to change their roof covering type based on minimizing the UHI's variation. The standard deviation obtained after the changes improved from 13.222 to 10.781 °C. The results indicate that to control UHI in the center of the region, it is necessary to inhibit UHI effects at the boundary of the study area with vegetation roof covering since flagstone and high-albedo materials have local effects on controlling the UHI effects.

Poplar chips were pre-treated by Trametes versicolor for 1, 2 and 3 weeks. Pre-treated chips, after washing, have been air dried for kraft pulping to achieve pulp kappa number of about 20. Pulp samples have been analyzed by Bauer Mc Nett, Kajaani analyzer and SEM. The results indicated that fungi pre-treatment of chips can degrade lignin and carbohydrates and affect kraft pulping and fiber characteristics. Higher chemical charge in pulping, lower fine and higher long fiber fraction were observed in pre-treated pulp samples in comparison with others. Fiber length, cross sectional area, width, cell wall thickness and volume index were increased by increasing pre-treatment time while fine length, fiber coarseness and curl have been reduced. Based on the study findings, with respect to higher fiber length, lower fine, and lower fiber curl and coarseness, 2-weeks pre-treatment of chips was recommended to produce acceptable overall fiber properties in kraft pulping., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Biologic agar-block method was developed that allowed wood samples to be evaluated and monitored in terms of colonization and development of the decay by Basidiomycetes fungi (Coriolus versicolor) and to be directly classified based on mean mass loss. In this research, the in vitro decay of five commercial woods by Coriolus versicolor was studied by the agar-block method. The selected wood samples were Abies alba, Populus alba, Fagus orientalis, Platanus orientalis and Ulmus glabra. The results demonstrated the strong resistance of Ulmus glabra and the lowest resistance in Fagus orientalis. The mass losses (%) were 16.8 and 42.4%, respectively. There were also a high correlation between the mass loss and apparent damage. Therefore biological evaluation of wood regarding biodegradation and the selection of wood types for various application respects will be of high priority.

Organosolv pulping of bagasse was conducted following a central composite design using a two-level factorial plan involving three pulping variables (temperature: 190-210 degrees C, time: 120-180 min, organic solvent ratio: 40-60% dimethyl formamide). Responses of pulp and handsheets properties to the process variables were analyzed using statistical software (MINITAB 14). Using values of the independent variables the variation ranges considered provided the following optimum values of the dependent variables: 82.7% (yield), 92.9 (kappa number), 1.403% (ash), 370 ml (freeness), 6290 m (breaking length), 9.4 (folding endurance), 5.955 mN m2 g(-1) (Tear index) and 2.811 kN g(-1) (Burst index) for pulps and handsheets. Results showed that acceptable physical and mechanical properties of pulps and papers similar the pulp used for bleaching could be achieved at 210 degrees C for 150 min and 50% DMF. These are the most suitable conditions for obtaining paper sheets with a high breaking length, tear and burst indices. Also bagasse could be pulped with ease to about 55.72% yield with kappa number approximately 35. The cooking temperature was a significant factor while the DMF ratio and cooking time were not as important in term of the properties of the resultant pulps and papers.
