Summary: This paper engages with the theoretical perspective of policy entrepreneurship to examine the pattern and process of policy change in the context of China's urban redevelopment. Drawing upon a strategic‐relational reinterpretation of policy entrepreneurship, this paper identifies a distinctive form of reluctant policy innovation in the "three old renewals" scheme initiated in Guangzhou where profit concession and informality tolerance were practiced to create a small window of opportunity for the project of urban redevelopment to break ground. The motivation of policy entrepreneurship in the successful urban renewal projects in Guangzhou was heavily contingent upon the geographically important location of the project site and the historically incidence of hosting the 2010 Asian Games, which forced municipal government to become entrepreneurial and innovative in decision making and income redistribution in order to get things done as quickly as possible. The distinct fashion of policy innovation identified in the case of Guangzhou points to the polymorphous and dynamic nature of policy entrepreneurship and advocates a relational treatment of the strategies and motives of policy entrepreneurs embedded in concrete geographical and historical context. Tactical Urbanism is a growing movement across the world in which individuals, communities, and municipalities are improving their cities by using short-term, lowcost, and small-scale interventions and policies to catalyze long term change. The aim of this paper is to test the principles and the approach of tactical urbanism to solve Guangzhou’s local public spaces problems by showcasing two tactical urbanism projects which have been completed in the Guangzhou urban context. These two cases reveal the opportunities that bottom-up approaches like tactical urbanism can build a bridge to conjunct with long term planning efforts and complete the top-down mechanisms. In the Zhusigang community case, we examine the spontaneously unplanned practices in the local community, which resemble “Tactical urbanism” principles, and their spatial appropriation and utilization of marginalised community spaces. We assess how and where daily activities are happening and what other amenities could be provide by temporarily introducing these activities into a local gallery space. In the former textile factory case, we present examples that make the case for temporary, flexible and experimental responses to urban vacant land, then conclude by outlining the potential benefits and drawbacks of this temporary use model. This paper explores the existing practices of appropriation and the potential of temporary occupation in the city and concludes with thoughts on how tactical urbanism, an international movement, might gain a foothold in the context of local Chinese communities. Emission reduction in the construction sector is essential for China to achieve its carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. Construction waste recycling represents an important step in reducing the construction industry's carbon emissions; however, construction waste recycling potential has received little attention from the industry to date. This paper adopts the Life Cycle Assessment method, constructs a carbon potential quantification formula for different construction waste treatment modes, and evaluates the economic benefit of these methods. The study's main results are as follows. (1) For each unit (t) of construction waste disposal, the carbon potential of close-range off-site recycling is the lowest, that of public landfill is the highest, and that of recycling is intermediate. (2) The economic benefit evaluation shows that under the same conditions, the lowest total disposal cost for construction waste per unit (t) is via recycling and resourcing, indicating that this approach combines economic benefits, environmental friendliness, and sustainability. (3) Eco-friendly bricks produced by construction waste recycling have reduced carbon potential requirements compared to traditional bricks; thus, the construction waste treatment process plays a successful role in reducing carbon potential. This study's conclusions enrich and improve the theory of construction waste resource management and can be used as a reference basis for the government to formulate emission reduction strategies for the construction industry and provide guidance for enterprises related to construction waste recycling. Summary: This research deals with a frame‐supported shear wall for urban over‐track building of vehicle depot in Chisha, Guangzhou, China, which is characterized by its remarkable height of 160.8 m. Technical issues are commonly encountered in these kinds of buildings due to discontinuous vertical structural rigidity, large podium, and structural transition. These challenges significantly impact the engineering process, especially when the rigidity difference between transfer story exceeding the threefold, as well as the building height exceeds limit as in code. In this paper, a shaking table test was developed based on a 1:10 scaled model of the structure. Using similarity theory, the dynamic similarity relationship was established for the design of the model. Subsequently, the experimental model was constructed with the configuration of critical parameters such as mass design, sensor placement, and seismic test conditions. This was followed by in‐depth analysis, recording component failures and investigating key aspects such as dynamic characteristics, that is, acceleration and displacement responses and shear force distribution under different earthquake intensities. A theoretical seismic response of the prototype structure was derived from the test results. The shaking table tests confirmed that the structure met the stringent seismic design requirements as prescribed in the Chinese standards, with no damage under minor earthquakes, repairability under moderate earthquakes, and collapse prevention under rare earthquakes. The results of the study provide valuable insights along with improvement measures for the design and development of similar urban over‐track buildings, potentially contributing to more efficient land use in urban China. This study explores the influence on urban sustainable development performance of residents' resettlement as a result of urban renewal activities, aiming to develop a system dynamics model to simulate the performance of urban sustainable development performance at the perspective of urban renewal. The system dynamics model consists of four subsystems, which are urban economic sector, social service sector, demolition and resettlement sector, and industrial development sector. It was used to simulate the sustainable development performance of Guangzhou city. In the seven scenarios simulated, it is found that increasing the ratio of in-site rehousing and off-site rehousing at the same time can help to promote the sustainable development of the city. The results show that the system dynamics model can effectively simulate the impacts of urban renewal on sustainable development performance, and provides a reference for decision makers to formulate urban sustainable development strategies. The implementation of rainwater harvesting (RWH) has emerged as a key strategy to cope with the water crisis in urban areas. However, the required design parameters of the RWH system in different buildings vary widely because of the differences in architectural characteristics. In this paper, the relationships between the building characteristics parameters and the optimal tank (Tc) capacity are investigated by simulating the RWH system for more than 120 buildings at different locations in Guangzhou. Explicit expressions relating the optimal storage volume of RWH systems to building characteristics are derived based on nonlinear regression analysis. A set of bivariate exponential equations for estimating the optimal tank size under different building conditions was obtained. The model has a MER of less than 10% for buildings with a C/D ratio between 17.5 and 85. In Guangzhou, the unit cost of an RWH system can be reduced to CNY 2.62/m2 with optimally designed tanks. Highlight: A generalization equation is proposed to assist in the design of cisterns for RWH systems.The validity range of the equation is verified.The derived analytical equation is adequate to determine the cistern volume for medium‐sized buildings. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, as the major metropolitan areas in China, offer good opportunities for economic and social mobility for in‐migrants. As such, these four locations have become the primary employment destinations for recent college graduates. Meanwhile, these cities have the most stringent hukou policies nationwide, which play a key role in the urban labour market segmentation between local residents and in‐migrants. Using three waves of data from a nationally representative survey, the China College Student Survey (2010, 2013, and 2015), this paper, for the first time, examined whether Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen have emerged as an 'upward social class escalator region' for young adults in China. After accounting for observed demographic and human capital characteristics and migrant selectivity, migrating into Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen has been found to be positively associated with earnings attainment, and the economic benefit from relocation is greater than that experienced by migrants elsewhere in the system. However, in‐migrants to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen have fewer opportunities to enter government organisations and public enterprises. These results cast doubt on the potential for Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen to act as escalators for individuals wishing to achieve all‐around upwards social mobility in China's urban labour market. The local hukou barrier may still be a salient factor in shaping migrants' labour market outcomes in China. This study contributes to existing knowledge on escalator theory by providing empirical evidence from an emerging market country, China. In order to meet the traffic and commercial needs, it is sometimes necessary to open the side wall of the metro station, while the current research on the mechanical properties and safety of the arch caused by the opening of the side wall of the station by pile-beam-arch (PBA) method is rarely involved. In this paper, based on the Tianhe East Station project of Guangzhou Metro Line 11 located in soft-hard uneven stratum using PBA method, the settlement law and mechanical characteristics of the arch under different side wall opening conditions are analyzed, and the influence of opening construction and opening span on the safety of arch is also further studied. The results show that the settlement caused by the opening of the side wall is mainly concentrated in the upper part of the opening area, and gradually expands around the opening area with the increase of opening span, and the maximum settlement occurs in the middle part of the arch. Opening leads to the differential settlement at both ends of the arch. With the increase in opening span, the settlement growth trend of the right side of the arch is greater than that of the left side. The opening of the side wall leads to the increase of the safety factor of the arch body and the decrease of the safety factor of the right arch foot, while the change of the safety factor of the left arch foot is not obvious, and the safety factor meets the specification requirements. The background of "emotional turn" calls for the study of affective geography to move away from the paradigm of subjective experience to a broader study of social space. As a complex social and cultural integration, the learning space for the elderly is no longer only a pure facility for the aged. The daily life, stage performance and social interaction of the elderly in the space are endowed with more special emotional significance. Taking Guangdong Old Cadres University as the main case study, this paper deconstructs the spatial perception of elderly students into three emotional stages, namely Cognition, Identity and Spillover, from the perspective of emotional geography, through long-term observation, participation and integration into the learning and social life of the elderly in and out of class. This paper holds that the learning place is not only a substantial spatial scale, but also a space with special social connection and sense of belonging around "community" and "emotion". Back to the old place by learning a positive space projection self definition, "to participate in learning" dynamic atmosphere triggers the elderly, the young positive emotions, space of social network also intimacy, a sense of belonging for the old emotional support, a positive local identity and sense of community ACTS on the spatial construction become stable, ageing resistant negative positive spillover benefits. This paper provides real case support for deconstructing learning space from the perspective of emotional geography, focuses on active actors in urban daily life, and provides empirical suggestions for the development of geriaterriendly communities. Canton (present-day Guangzhou) has long flourished as a port city. As the city expanded in the nineteenth century, the risks of conflagrations increased; streets became more crowded, buildings were more often made of wood, and there was more use of open fires. The reconstruction of Canton after conflagrations provides an excellent way to observe the resilience of urban space, understood here as the result of interactions among different stakeholders. This paper explores how authorities, local communities, foreigners, and Hong merchants addressed fires and rebuilt through laws, regulations, technologies and cooperation, and how responses to fire destruction shaped urban space. Divers stakeholders affected the reconstruction of buildings and streets. The government made laws to widen streets, communities built watchtowers, and foreigners made new plans for Thirteen Factories, a neigbhorhood along the Pearl River. At the same time, conflicts between communities and foreigners obstructed plans for urban transformation and maintained the stability of urban structures. The communities kept the traditional local community organizations the 'Kaifong' (local organization in street) who opposed the widening streets and fought against proposed fire zones around Thirteen Factories, thus pitching local interests against those of the foreigners in a complex social, political, and cultural context. Rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems are one of the most promising technologies for water supply, but the economic viability often barricades their implementation. To assess the economic viability of decentralized RWH systems at a regional level, this paper develops a generic method to investigate the effect of variations in building characteristics on the economic performance of rainwater harvesting systems in regions with fixed water tariffs and rainfall distribution characteristics. We simulated the financial efficiency (expressed as a benefit-cost ratio) of a large number of decentralized RWH systems in Guangzhou, China. We found that the financial efficiency of the RWH systems is closely related to the catchment fraction (i.e., the ratio of rainfall catchment surface to total floor area). Based on this dimensionless parameter, we derived explicit equations expressing the financial efficiency of RWH systems using a nonlinear regression method. In addition, we validated the analytical equations by the root mean square error test, normality test, and error distribution test. This analytical solution provides a simple and generic method for forecasting the investment potential of rainwater harvesting systems. High-rise building areas (HRBs) provide significant social and environmental services and play a crucial role in modern urbanization. The large-scale and long-term spatial distribution of HRBs is of great interest to many fields, such as urban planning and local climate analysis. While previous studies have confirmed the value of Sentinel-2 images in extracting HRBs and their changes, current work is limited to relatively local areas and short-term analysis. One reason is due to the fact that the earliest Sentinel-2 image can only date back to 2015. To address this research gap, this paper proposes an efficient procedure to intelligently extract HRBs and their changes from multitemporal Landsat-7 and Sentinel-2 images, using a specifically designed fully convolutional network. To validate the proposed method, we selected four typical cities in China, namely, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Zhengzhou, as study areas. We utilized Landsat-7 images acquired in 2000 and 2010, along with Sentinel-2 images acquired in 2020, as experimental data. We extracted and analyzed three periods of HRBs and their changes in the four cities, along with urban rail terminal data and gross domestic product (GDP) data in the same period. The results show that the proposed method can efficiently extract HRBs and their changes in the four cities over the past 20 years, with an overall accuracy of more than 90%. HRBs changes are primarily driven by urban planning policies and geographical factors. There is a strong positive correlation between the increase in HRBs and the increase in rail terminals, both in terms of quantity and spatial distribution. Additionally, there is a positive correlation between HRBs increase and GDP increase in terms of quantity, but the trend varies in different cities due to their diverse developing modes. We use several research tools, such as observations, interviews and textual analysis, to assess the experience of 'doing the month' in Yuezi Clubs with the aim of deepening understanding of the Chinese 'home'. Analysis of data from three Yuezi Clubs in Guangzhou reveals that the traditional 'doing the month' exacerbates intergenerational and regional customary conflicts in modern Chinese families. However, the emergence of the Yuezi Club was a timely invention that has averted such conflicts. We find that Yuezi Clubs strengthen nuclear family bonds. This paper extends the role of capital in shaping the Chinese home, including the social construction. Our findings uncover specific cultural practices in Chinese homes and expand Marxist theory in furthering understanding of Chinese homes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Passenger travel flows of urban rail transit during holidays usually show distinct characteristics different from normal days. To ensure efficient operation management, it is essential to accurately predict the distribution of holiday passenger flow. Based on Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) data, this paper explores the passengers' destination choice differences between normal days and holidays, as well as one-way tickets and public transportation cards, which provides support for variable selection in modeling. Then, a forecasting model of holiday travel distribution is proposed, in which the destination choice model is established for representing local and nonlocal passengers. Meanwhile, explanatory variables such as land matching degree, scenic spot dummy, and level of service variables are introduced to deal with the particularity of holiday passengers' travel behavior. The parameters calibrated by the improved weighted exogenous sampling maximum likelihood (WESML) method are applied to predict passenger flow distribution in different holiday cases with annual changes in the metro network, using the data collected from Guangzhou Metro, China. The results show that the proposed model is valid and performs better than the other comparable models in terms of forecasting accuracy. The proposed model has the capability to provide a more universal and accurate passenger flow distribution prediction method for urban rail transit in different holiday scenarios with network changes. Over-track buildings in metro depots become more and more prevalent in metropolis with the increase in population and the decrease of construction land. However, the train-induced vibration greatly reduces the comfort of occupants living in the over-track buildings. Owing to complex vibration sources and numerous transfer paths, it is a challenging task to analyze and predict the vibration characteristics accurately in the building. In this paper, a field measurement campaign of vibration was conducted in the Guanhu metro depot in Guangzhou, China. A novel formulation based on the operational transfer path analysis (OTPA) and singular value decomposition (SVD) is proposed to analyze the measured data and predict the train-induced vibration in the building. In this study, the vibration contributions from each transfer path to the target points in the building were obtained and the predominant transfer paths were identified further. Besides, the vibration at target points in the building was predicted using the vibration at path points and transmissibility functions from transfer paths. This study provides insights into the prediction and evaluation of vibration transmissions from vibration source to upper floors of over-track building. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The quality of urban environment has a profound impact on the health of women – one of the core subjects of urban life. Based on neuroscientific methods, such as the Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) and the E4 wristband and taking a road section in Guangzhou as an example, this paper explores the impact of urban environment on women’s emotional health from both objective physiological indicators and subjective psychological reports. The study finds that both environment type and travel sequence have a different impact on women’s emotions. The level of spatial openness, the sudden change of environment type, and the mixed traffic flow are the main factors contributing to fluctuations in female participants’ emotional arousal. Combined with the neuroscience experiment results and an in-depth interview, it proposes women-friendly planning and design strategies, such as improving vision permeability and creating reasonable transitional space, in order to provide a reference for the construction of healthy cities focusing on key populations. Simple Summary: Adhesive tapes are as effective as baits and pitfall traps in monitoring Solenopsis invicta and Tapinoma melanocephalum in urban areas in southern China. However, adhesive tapes detected less ants and fewer species of non-target ants than baits and pitfall traps. Our study demonstrated that tape-paving behavior can potentially be used in developing more specific monitoring methods for S. invicta and T. melanocephalum in urban areas in southern China. Our previous study discovered that two urban pest ants, red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), and ghost ants, Tapinoma melanocephalum (Fabricius) (Formicidae: Dolichoderinae), can pave viscose surfaces with particles to facilitate food search and transport. We hypothesize that this paving behavior can be applied to monitor S. invicta and T. melanocephalum. In the present study, 3998 adhesive tapes, each with a food source (sausage), were placed in 20 locations around Guangzhou, China (181–224 tapes per location), and their efficiency to detect S. invicta and T. melanocephalum was compared with two traditional ant-monitoring methods, baiting and pitfall trapping. Overall, S. invicta was detected by 45.6% and 46.4% of baits and adhesive tapes, respectively. In each location, the percentage of adhesive tapes detecting S. invicta and T. melanocephalum was similar when compared to baits and pitfall traps. However, significantly more non-target ant species showed up on bait and pitfall traps. Seven non-target ant species—Pheidole parva Mayr (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), Pheidole nodus Smith (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), Pheidole sinica Wu & Wang (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), Pheidole yeensis Forel (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), Carebara affinis (Jerdon) (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), Camponotus nicobarensis Mayr (Formicidae: Formicinae), and Odontoponera transversa (Smith) (Formicidae: Ponerinae)—also showed tape paving behavior, but they can be easily distinguished morphologically from S. invicta and T. melanocephalum. Our study showed that the paving behavior occurs in different subfamilies of ants (i.e., myrmicinae, dolichoderinae, formicinae, and ponerinae). This paper examines the influence of major events on urban development and change across two city contexts (i.e. Guangzhou and Birmingham). Considering cities as new international actors, a theoretical modal was proposed, and qualitative evidence was gathered to examine the cities' decision to bid for the hosting of the 2010 Asian Games and the 2022 Commonwealth Games respectively, the urban development–related pressures faced, and the ways in which urban development occurred as a result of event production. In response to intercity competition and globalisation, both cities fought for development opportunities and actively sought international and national attention through major events. However, urban governance becomes complicated, in terms of managing city–market–society relations; as such, particularly for Guangzhou, it led the city government to adopt an entrepreneurial approach to urban governance. Background: In the context of the "silver wave" and "technology wave", smart home care for older adults in the community provide new ways for China and other countries to support ageing in place. Yet, only very few studies have focused on developing a quality index system of smart care. This study attempted to draw on the SERVQUAL model to establish a quality evaluation index system for smart senior care for older adults in the community. Methods: On the basis of the service quality model, this paper has integrated qualitative and quantitative analyses using the Delphi and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods to construct the index system of smart home care in the community and obtain the weights. These were based on literature research and field interviews in Guangzhou and Shenzhen pilot districts. Results: A quality evaluation indexes system of smart home care for older adults in the community was developed, with 5 primary indices and 33 secondary indices. The weights of the 5 stair indices from high to low were smart emergency assistance 0.332, smart meal assistance 0.272, smart medical assistance 0.229, smart cleaning assistance 0.110 and smart amusement assistance 0.057. Conclusion: The results from the weight allocation revealed smart emergency assistance, smart meal assistance, and smart medical care assistance were the most important and crucial aspects of community-based smart home care. The study also suggested that "timeliness", "reliability", and "ease of use" should be given more attention. It is recommended to use this index system as a regulatory benchmark to guide the government bodies, senior care enterprises and communities to take measures to enhance the quality. Urban land change plays an essential role in the development of country's economy. Rapid and unplanned urban growth increases land surface temperature (LST) and reduces carbon storage (CS) by replacing the natural land use/land cover (LULC). This paper aims to monitor and predict the changes in urban growth patterns on LST and CS for the winter season in Guangzhou from 1989 to 2021. The integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model is used to assess the existing (1989-2021) scenario of CS. The Cellular Automata-Artificial Neural Network (CA-ANN) and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) based Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) are used to predict the future LULC, CS and LST scenarios. The results indicate that an increase in urban areas by 63% causes an upsurge of high LST (≥34 °C) areas by 652 km2 and a decrease in carbon storage by 56,943.607 t from 1989 to 2021. In addition, the results demonstrate that 93% of lower temperature areas have higher CS capacity (65%), whereas 80% of higher temperature areas demonstrate a low CS capacity (89%). This paper presents a case study of deep excavation adjacent to an existing bridge in karst region of Guangzhou city, China. The movements of retaining structures, settlements of surrounding ground and pipelines, and the responses of bridge piles were measured and evaluated. A sudden surge of groundwater was recorded at the north pit when excavated halfway. Soil-cement columns using the Metro Jet System (MJS) method was employed along the outer perimeters of the diaphragm wall where water inflow occurred, for the sake of blocking the flow channels. The measured maximum wall deflection dhm in this case ranged from 0.13 %H to 0.3 %H, with a mean value of 0.2 %H (H is the excavation depth), which agreed well with the empirical prediction in mixed ground. During the MJS treatment, the wall and surrounding soils experienced notable lateral deflection and settlement. The bridge piles experienced significant settlement since the excavation commenced, which might be attributed to the inherent deficiency in geological condition and pile length. The soil disturbance induced by the adjacent deep excavation accelerated bridge settlement. The finite element analysis revealed that the excessive settlement of the bridge piles and ground surface resulted from confined-water withdrawal in sand layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As China's economy has entered the development stage of a "new normal," the traditional path relying on investment scale expansion for economic growth can no longer sustain. Thus the key of the supply-side structural reform lies in breaking through the long-term path dependence and facilitating the transformation and innovation of socio-economic and urban development. This paper takes Shenzhen as the benchmark of the comparative study, and Guangzhou and Tianjin as the comparative object to analyze the contributions of the demand-side "troika" - investment, consumption, and export, to economic growth from 1986 to 2015. Then, it introduces multiple growth elements on the supply-side to analyze the significant contribution elements in urban economic growth and their contribution degrees. Meanwhile, in combination with the economic development background and the policy guidance since the reform and opening up, the paper analyzes the characteristics of the development paths and their trends of the three cities. In the end, based on the comparative study, it carries out a discussion on the development path for mega-cities and their urban planning strategies at the new era from three perspectives. Recent theoretical advancements in geographies of religion have reconceptualised secularisation as a multi‐scaled, grounded process of place‐making that reconciles the "agent‐in‐place" with large, institutional differentiation and fragmentation. This paper contributes to this re‐theorisation by examining the context of urban regeneration in which macro‐ and meso‐scaled secularisation is performed, negotiated and contested at the scale of the local community. The empirical research focuses on state‐enforced secularisation imposed on the ancestral temple of a lineage village during the urban regeneration project in Guangzhou, China. This paper considers the resistance conducted by local villagers to defend the sacredness and authority of their ancestral temple and to reclaim their own space from the totalising party‐state. We suggest that the effect of secularisation at the micro‐scale implies the formation of new religiosities as new legitimising religious thoughts and discourses of the sacred arose within villagers' embodied practices of resistance. This paper therefore highlights both secularisation and re‐sacralisation as scalar constructs that mutually interact at different scales. This paper examines how secularisation and re‐sacralisation manifest at different scales through a case study of China's ancestral temple in Guangzhou. Land improvement syndicates (LIS) are a land-policy instrument that has been implemented in Switzerland to incorporate land readjustments, zoning changes and infrastructure provisions within a single instrument. These instruments address contentious situations, such as disagreements among landowners, inappropriate property subdivisions, problematic allocations of development rights, and the distribution of infrastructure provision costs. LIS redistribute added land values and costs of land development between landowners in a more equitable manner. While LIS have been in place for several decades, there have been limited studies on institutional aspects of these policy instruments, and particularly their associated transaction costs. In line with the transaction-cost economics theory, this paper considers the activities involved in the formation and execution of LIS as a series of transactions and discusses when and why transaction costs arise throughout the life cycle of the policy instrument. To this end, this paper uses an LIS case study in the commune of Cheseaux, Canton Vaud. The results of this paper show the variance of transaction costs across time, actor and activity. Activities such as preparation of the feasibility study and infrastructure provision are among those that appear to generate particularly considerable transaction costs. Public signs, as the name card demonstrating the cultural quality and spiritual outlook of a city, play a crucial role in the external publicity of Guangzhou, an International metropolis in South China. With more and more tourists travelling to Guangzhou, the translation quality of public signs in scenic spots has become increasingly important. This paper, focusing on the public signs in scenic spots in Guangzhou, first analyzes the Chinese to English translation of public signs and finds out the translation problems and corresponding causes, then gives some suggestions on the translation methods and strategies of the Chinese to English translation of public signs in scenic spots accordingly. • ON particles increased as NO x enhancement at night. • ON particles were mainly produced via heterogeneous reactions between NO x and organics. • The decrease of ON particles was associated with photo-bleaching effect. Organic nitrogen (ON) compounds play a significant role in the light absorption of brown carbon and the formation of organic aerosols, however, the mixing state, secondary formation processes, and influencing factors of ON compounds are still unclear. This paper reports on the mixing state of ON-containing particles based on measurements obtained using a high-performance single particle aerosol mass spectrometer in January 2020 in Guangzhou. The ON-containing particles accounted for 21% of the total detected single particles, and the particle count and number fraction of the ON-containing particles were two times higher at night than during the day. The prominent increase in the content of ON-containing particles with the enhancement of NO x mainly occurred at night, and accompanied by high relative humidity and nitrate, which were associated with heterogeneous reactions between organics and gaseous NO x and/or NO 3 radical. The synchronous decreases in ON-containing particles and the mass absorption coefficient of water-soluble extracts at 365 nm in the afternoon may be associated with photo-bleaching of the ON species in the particles. In addition, the positive matrix factorization analysis found five factors dominated the formation processes of ON particles, and the nitrate factor (33%) mainly contributed to the production of ON particles at night. The analysis of the multi-scale evaluation of port city's international trade goal is conducive to the sustainable development of port city's international trade. In order to make a more in-depth study on the realization ability of port city's international trade sustainable development goal, this paper proposes a new multi-scale evaluation method of port city's international trade goal. This method selects the evaluation indexes, uses the improved normalization method to process the indexes, uses the combination of AHP and factor analysis method to form the subjective and objective combination weighting method, brings the processed indexes into the least square optimization combination evaluation model, calculates the index weight, and uses the fuzzy evaluation method to carry out multi-scale index evaluation on the international trade of port cities to realize its multi-scale evaluation and analysis. The results show that the standardized index of Shanghai's foreign trade dependence is 0.0056, indicating its independence in international trade. In the comprehensive evaluation, the evaluation values of Shanghai, Tianjin, and Guangzhou are 92.56, 87.89, and 88.45, respectively, which are very close to the actual results, which shows that the accuracy of the evaluation method is high, and provides a theoretical basis for the sustainable development of international trade in port cities. The development of digital and mobile technology has led to the emergence of digital scholarship, which is a challenge but also an opportunity for higher education institutions to improve their space and relevant services to support students' success. The purpose of this study is to explore university students' needs and expectations on digital scholarship spaces and relevant services in an academic library, as well as the differences in this based on gender, academic identity, and subject being studied. We conducted a survey at Shipai campus of Jinan University in Guangzhou to collect and analyze users' needs and expectations. Among the digital scholarship service, the demand scores of the top three services are text recognition and full-text processing with 7.00, academic paper writing, submission, publication, and dissemination consulting services with 6.86, and digitization of printed documents with 6.72. Elsewhere, the demand score of the top three spaces are the online digital scholarship space with 6.57, the research project application and exchange space with 6.43, and the text analysis, data analysis, Big Data, and visualization service center with 6.27. With the improvement of academic identity, the demand for digital scholarship services is higher. Gender has led to differences in a small number of space needs, while the differences brought about by the subject being studied are more significant. This research contributes to the understanding of how the digital technology, the students' spaces needs, and relevant management practice merge in academic libraries for students' learning and research purposes. These have implications for universities to improve their libraries' space services oriented to the diverse users' digital scholarship needs in the current digital learning environment. Study on export paintings has gradually shifted from artistic form to cultural connotation, with an emphasis on cross-cultural communication. Although the economic and social dimensions of their artistic value have been explored, few studies delve into the connection between Qing-era Guangzhou's trade culture and its color characteristics. Utilizing the HSV color model and the k-means algorithm, this study analyzes the color traits of 35 export paintings depicting Guangzhou landscapes and works from the "Thirteen-houses commercial zone," revealing Qing-era Guangzhou's urban impressions and Sino-Western artistic interactions. Key findings include: (1) the hue pixel range in Guangzhou export paintings primarily spans 10°–60° and 120°–250° (dominated by red and yellow-green), saturation values range from 1–82% (primarily low saturation), and value values range from 11–94% (with a wide variance); (2) compared to traditional Chinese paintings, the transformation from pure color (正色) → inter-color (间色) → projection-perspective and light source illustrates both the blending of Eastern and Western artistic cultures and a diminishing influence of traditional ceremonial culture; (3) in contrast with Western artworks, some Guangzhou export paintings display a Westernization trend in color structures, evident in vibrant colors and stark chiaroscuro contrasts. As bespoke art commodities, export paintings microscopically reflect Guangzhou's unique trade culture and socio-political dynamics. The shifts in color schemes, integration of realistic styles, and human-centric characteristics unveil the intricate interplay between quasi-realism and transcendental aesthetics in Qing-era Guangzhou, as well as the nuanced dynamics between social capital and art within a global trade network. Taking the residential buildings in Guangzhou under the influence of modern western as an example, based on a large number of historical materials, this paper makes field investigation and investigation on the existing excellent modern buildings in Guangzhou, and deeply analyzes the interior decoration style of modern Guangzhou. By sorting out the modern interior decoration styles of Guangzhou under the influence of the west, this paper explores the causes and paths of the relevant characteristics, and traces the origin, which helps us to find the uniqueness of the development of interior design in Guangzhou, and re-examine the development process of modern interior design in Guangzhou from a historical perspective. Based on the panel data of 41 cities along and around the Guangzhou Zhuhai intercity railway (GZR) from 2005 to 2018 and taking the opening of the GZR as a natural experimental scenario, the difference-in-difference (DID) method was used to empirically test the impact of the opening of the GZR on the innovation of cities along the line. The research results show that the opening of GZR has had a statistically positive effect on the innovation of cities along the route—that is, the innovation dividend of high-speed railway (HSR)cities exists, which improves the level of urban innovation—and further, there is time dynamics and regional heterogeneity in the innovation dividend. This paper proposes a framework to identify geological characteristics (GC) based on borehole data and operational data during shield tunnelling using a fuzzy C-means algorithm. The proposed fuzzy C-means model was established by integrating the K-means ++ algorithm into the fuzzy set theory. The identified factors for GC include advance rate, cutterhead rotation speed, thrust, cutterhead torque, penetration rate, torque penetration index, field penetration index, and specific energy. Principal component analysis was employed to reduce the dimensions of these factors. The first six principal components were employed to analyse the GC and establish the input data set in the fuzzy C-means model. The types of GC were determined based on elbow method, silhouette coefficient, fuzzy partition coefficient and the geological profile from borehole data. The proposed approach was validated by a case of Guangzhou intercity tunnel construction. The results present that the proposed fuzzy C-means model can effectively determine GC and provide membership to reveal the proportion of hard rock. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a development form of the creative industry, the Artist Village is a high concern of the Chinese government, and it has achieved rapid developments in China in recent years. However, many Artist Villages come to an untimely end a short period after their birth and fail to realize sustainable development. In this study, an empirical analysis on 80 Artist Villages in China was carried out. A field investigation and research on eight Artist Villages was implemented. Attention was paid to thoroughly analyze three typical Artist Villages of Guangzhou Xiaozhou Artist Village, Chongqing Gujianshan Artist Village and Beijing Songzhuang Artist Village. It has been found from studies that the development of Artist Villages in China has experienced initiation, development and maturity stages. The development of Artist Villages in China generally has many problems, such as an insufficient endogenous impetus, the excessive intervention of government, market capital "squeezing out" the original artists, and so on. This paper proposed a sustainable development model for Artist Villages during urbanization in China based on the findings and conclusions of this study. Hydro-meteorological monitoring systems are essential sources of information for designing sustainable water management and developing equitable policies. In this paper we discuss the role of a regional monitoring network in Switzerland, Canton Ticino, and identify a list of challenges and actions to be considered to address future expected issues. The identification is based on a retrospective review of the monitoring network and analysis of the state of the art. Based on our experience, the most critical aspects relate to data density and quality, improvement of archiving and dissemination, modernization of the network for increased quality of service and better interoperability to foster the transition towards an innovative and interdisciplinary water resources management. How do African migrants become stuck-in-place and experience stuckedness in China? This article interrogates the concepts of stuckedness and social navigation to examine what it means to be 'stuck-in-place' using the stories of four Nigerians—a woman and three men—in Guangzhou City. Two modes of stuckedness were observed: 'truncational stuckedness' and 'identity stuckedness'. While the former resulted from being spatially stuck in Guangzhou on their way to South Korea and Hong Kong, the latter was a product of identity appropriation, where a migrant uses the passport of another country. Despite the constraint of stuckedness and the precarity that those without valid immigration papers faced, migrants managed to reinterpret their situations and stayed put while being opened to emplacement in Guangzhou—albeit a transitory kind. In calibrating their practice of 'moving on' in Guangzhou, however, economic integration, the local and transnational networks of migrants, hope, prolonging one's stay and management of micro-mobilities of the everyday were deployed singly or in combination with one another. The article advances debates in China-African relations and Afro-mobilities in East Asia while also contributing to discourses on migrant trajectories, stuckedness, and mobilities studies.
