Abstract

The article discusses research which was conducted to investigate the effect carbohydrate ingestion had on acute leukocyte, cortisol and interleukin-6 response in high intensity long distance running. Researchers evaluated seven recreational runners, some of whom drank high carbohydrate drinks and some who drank drinks with lower levels of carbohydrates. They found high carbohydrate drinks blunted the cortisol response and decreased the leukocyte resonse in runners.
