Background: Following the World Health Organization (WHO) endorsement of dual active ingredient (AI) nets, an increased uptake of pyrethroid-chlorfenapyr and pyrethroid-pyriproxyfen nets is expected. Studies evaluating their physical and insecticidal durability are essential for making programmatic and procurement decisions. This paper describes the methodology for a prospective study to evaluate the attrition, fabric integrity, insecticidal durability of Interceptor® G2 (alpha-cypermethrin-chlorfenapyr) and Royal Guard® (alpha-cypermethrin-pyriproxyfen), compared to Interceptor® (alpha-cypermethrin), embedded in a 3-arm cluster randomized controlled trial (cRCT) in the Zou Department of Benin. Methods: Ten clusters randomly selected from each arm of the cRCT will be used for the study. A total of 750 ITNs per type will be followed in 5 study clusters per arm to assess ITN attrition and fabric integrity at 6-, 12-, 24- and 36-months post distribution, using standard WHO procedures. A second cohort of 1800 nets per type will be withdrawn every 6 months from all 10 clusters per arm and assessed for chemical content and biological activity in laboratory bioassays at each time point. Alpha-cypermethrin bioefficacy in Interceptor® and Royal Guard® will be monitored in WHO cone bioassays and tunnel tests using the susceptible Anopheles gambiae Kisumu strain. The bioefficacy of the non-pyrethroid insecticides (chlorfenapyr in Interceptor® G2 and pyriproxyfen in Royal Guard®) will be monitored using the pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles coluzzii Akron strain. Chlorfenapyr activity will be assessed in tunnel tests while pyriproxyfen activity will be assessed in cone bioassays in terms of the reduction in fertility of blood-fed survivors observed by dissecting mosquito ovaries. Nets withdrawn at 12, 24 and 36 months will be tested in experimental hut trials within the cRCT study area against wild free-flying pyrethroid resistant An. gambiae sensu lato to investigate their superiority to Interceptor® and to compare them to ITNs washed 20 times for experimental hut evaluation studies. Mechanistic models will also be used to investigate whether entomological outcomes with each dual ITN type in experimental hut trials can predict their epidemiological performance in the cRCT. Conclusion: This study will provide information on the durability of two dual AI nets (Interceptor® G2 and Royal Guard®) in Benin and will help identify suitable methods for monitoring the durability of their insecticidal activity under operational conditions. ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to explore the impacts of extra-local economic and political forces on the business community participants of the governing regime coalition in Akron, Ohio, and in turn, how other regime partners responded to and engaged with the changing constitution of Akron's business community. Unlike the UK where municipalities receive substantial fiscal support from regional and national governments, American cities are more readily forced into regime partnerships with other public and private actors for fiscal solvency, including, primarily, the local business community. In the case of Akron, the local business community experienced a prolonged and ongoing period of comprehensive deindustrialization and economic restructuring, forcing the city into partnerships with less traditional non-private sector actors as Akron's business community structure continues to transform. A secondary objective is to forward the utility of social network analysis in regime theory applications. Social network analysis offers a way to situate arguably the most influential actors in a regime coalition. Utilizing the directories of Standard and Poor's Index of Corporations and Directors from 1975 through 2006, social network analysis is performed on the interlocking network of corporations and civic organizations based in Akron for each decade, allowing a longitudinal view of the changing business community partners of Akron's governing coalition. "Labor in Akron, 1825–1945" by John A. Tully is a comprehensive history of the labor movement in Akron, Ohio. The book explores the city's worker activism beyond its famous rubber industry and highlights the peak of socialist labor activism in the early 20th century. Tully traces the efforts of Akron's working class to organize, strike, and find support from various labor organizations. The author argues that Akron's radical tendencies ultimately failed due to factors such as economic recession, state intervention, and racial divisions among workers. Background: Broflanilide is a new insecticide being developed for malaria vector control. As new insecticide chemistries become available, strategies to preserve the susceptibility of local malaria vectors and extend their useful life need to be considered before large scale deployment. This requires the development of appropriate testing procedures and identification of suitable discriminating concentrations for monitoring susceptibility in wild vector populations to facilitate decision making by control programmes. Methods: Dose-response WHO bottle bioassays were conducted using the insecticide-susceptible Anopheles gambiae s.s. Kisumu strain to determine a discriminating concentration of broflanilide. Bioassays were performed without the adjuvant Mero® and with two concentrations of Mero® (500 ppm and 800 ppm) to investigate its impact on the discriminating concentration of the insecticide. Probit analysis was used to determine the lethal doses at 50% (LC50) and 99% (LC99) at 24-, 48- and 72-hours post-exposure. Cross-resistance to broflanilide and pyrethroids, DDT, dieldrin and carbamates, was investigated using An. gambiae s.l. Covè and An. coluzzii Akron strains. The susceptibility of wild pyrethroid-resistant mosquitoes from communities in Southern Benin to broflanilide was assessed using the estimated discriminating concentrations. Results: Broflanilide induced a dose-dependent and delayed mortality effect. Mortality rates in bottles treated without Mero® were <80% using the range of broflanilide doses tested (0–100 μg/bottle) leading to high and unreliable estimates of LC99 values. The discriminating concentrations defined as 2XLC99 at 72h post exposure were estimated to be 2.2 μg/bottle with 800 ppm of Mero® and 6.0 μg/bottle with 500 ppm of Mero®. Very low resistance ratios (0.6–1.2) were determined with the insecticide resistant An. gambiae s.l. Covè and An. coluzzii Akron strains suggesting the absence of cross-resistance via the mechanisms of resistance to pyrethroids, DDT, dieldrin and carbamates they possess. Bottle bioassays performed with broflanilide at both discriminating concentrations of 6 μg/bottle with 500 ppm of Mero® and 2.2 μg/bottle with 800 ppm of Mero®, showed susceptibility of wild highly pyrethroid-resistant An. gambiae s.l. from villages in Southern Benin. Conclusion: We determined discriminating concentrations for monitoring susceptibility to broflanilide in bottle bioassays, using susceptible An. gambiae vectors. Using the estimated discriminating concentrations, we showed that wild pyrethroid-resistant populations of An. gambiae s.l. from southern Benin were fully susceptible to the insecticide. Broflanilide also shows potential to be highly effective against An. gambiae s.l. vector populations that have developed resistance to other public health insecticides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This technical paper presents a comparative study of the fatigue strength of high-pressure composite pipes and high-pressure composite pipes containing joints. The test specimens used in this experimental investigation were exposed to cyclic bending stresses and to cyclic bending stresses in combination with constant or cyclic internal pressures generated by water brine, and crude oil. The extrinsic influence of elevated temperature on fatigue performance was also examined. A new four-point bending fatigue machine was developed at the University of Akron to accomplish the testing. For each test specimen, two types of failure were distinctly observed. After a number of repeated cycles, the fluid under internal pressure began to gradually leak through the fine microscopic cracks in the matrix. The fine microscopic cracks were oriented in the circumferential direction of the pipe. However despite the occurrence of "weeping failure" of the pipe, internal pressure could be easily maintained. After about 10-100 times the number of cycles required for "weeping," the fiber reinforcements of the pipe gradually fractured and the internal pressure could no longer be maintained. The loss of pressure is referred to as "pipe failure." in these tests, the primary parameter controlling failure was orientation of the fiber reinforcements in the body of the pipe. Those fibers aligned along the pipe axis revealed a substantial improvement in cyclic fatigue resistance. The existence of a joint in the test specimen showed secondary importance while contributing to degradation of the fatigue resistance of the specimen. Both types of failure were found to be dependent on temperature, over the range tested (22-66°C, and also dependent on the type of internal liquid used. The specimens tested using crude oil at 66°C as the internal fluid revealed the lowest fatigue resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper summarizes the findings of a ten year study on a Pre-Engineering program aimed at dramatically improving both the recruitment and retention of under-represented students pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at The University of Akron. The primary goal of this study was to evaluate The University of Akron's operation of the special High School Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math Science, Educational Talent Search and Pre-Engineering Academic Achievement Programs with the primary objective of increasing the number of under-represented students in STEM. The programs are offered in collaboration with the College of Engineering Minority Engineering program, Increasing Diversity in Engineering Academics (IDEAs). The net effectiveness of the programs was measured using the following parameters: (a) average high school grade point average both before and after participating in Pre-Engineering programs, (b) high school math and science achievements, (c) retention rate for students returning from previous year, (d) students enrolling in colleges and (e) percentage of students committed to STEM upon graduation. The most noteworthy result stemming from the use of these strategies is that the targeted students, who have expressed an enthusiastic interest in pursuing mathematics and science, are highly motivated, ambitious and excited about exploring STEM. Silica was dual layer surface‐capped by hexamethyldisilamide (HMDS) and epoxy‐terminated ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) via an in situ synthesis route to acquire greatly improved compatibility and interfacial interactions with solution polymerized styrene‐butadiene rubber/butadiene rubber (SSBR/BR). The as‐prepared HMDS/EVA‐SiO2 was used to reinforce SSBR/BR matrix so as to improve the wet skid resistance and wear resistance, and reduce the rolling resistance of the rubber–matrix composite. Besides, the as‐fabricated HMDS/EVA‐SiO2 was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy; and the tensile strength and tear resistance of the HMDS/EVA–SiO2/SSBR/BR composites were measured with a universal testing machine. Moreover, an Akron abrasion test was performed to determine the abrasion volume of SiO2–SSBR/BR composites; and a rotary rheometer was run to evaluate the dynamic mechanical properties of the vulcanized rubber‐matrix composites. Findings indicate that the EVA resin latex synthesized by emulsion polymerization can effectively improve the compatibility and forms a permeability layer between the rubber and nano‐silica of the composites. The as‐fabricated HMDS/EVA‐SiO2‐SSBR/BR composite exhibits greatly improved wear resistance and wet skid resistance as well as significantly reduced rolling resistance, showing potential as green tire tread material with increased security and service life as well as reduced energy consumption. A way to make short fiber get radial orientation in rubber matrix during extrusion has been studied. Firstly, a type of dam-expanding die has been designed according to theory analysis. Secondly, the physical model and mathematical model of short fiber radial orientation have been built, which indicates that half expansion angle and expansion ratio are important factors that affect radial orientation of short fiber. Therefore, the type of dam-expanding dies with different half expansion angles and expansion ratios has been manufactured to carry out radial orientation of short fiber. Finally, experiments have been done with the manufactured dies. The experiments' results indicate that the mathematical model could be used to forecast radial orientation of short fiber, and the type of dam-expanding die with half expansion angle 75° and expansion ratio 5 can carry out the radial orientation of short fiber in rubber matrix with short fiber-rubber composite materials. Furthermore, with these conditions, short fibers could get orientation angle about 84°. Some physical–mechanical properties of composite materials can reach a new level, such as tensile strength 28.95 MPa, tear strength 87.82 kN/m and Akron wear 0.172 cm3/1.6 km. Moreover, physical–mechanical properties of composite materials got from S-test are much better than those got from V-test, which indicates that if short fibers are well radial orientated, the composites will be in obvious anisotropy. Shortly after 0600 UTC (midnight MDT) 9 June 2020, a rapidly intensifying and elongating convective system produced a macroburst and extensive damage in the town of Akron on Colorado's eastern plains. Instantaneous winds were measured as high as 51.12 m s−1 at 2.3 m AGL from an eddy covariance (EC) tower, and a 50.45 m s−1 wind gust from an adjacent 10-m tower became the highest official thunderstorm wind gust ever measured in Colorado. Synoptic-scale storm motion was southerly, but surface winds were northerly in a postfrontal air mass, creating strong vertical wind shear. Extremely high-resolution temporal and spatial observations allow for a unique look at pressure and temperature tendencies accompanying the macroburst and reveal intriguing wave structures in the outflow. At 10-Hz frequency, the EC tower recorded a 5-hPa pressure surge in 19 s immediately following the strongest winds, and a 15-hPa pressure drop in the following 3 min. Surface temperature also rose 1.5°C in less than 1 min, concurrent with the maximum wind gusts, and then fell sharply by 3.5°C in the following minute. Shifting wind direction observations and an NWS damage survey are suggestive of both radial outflow and a gust front passage, and model proximity soundings reveal a well-mixed surface layer topped by a strong inversion and large low-level vertical wind shear. Despite the greatest risk of severe winds forecast to be northeast of Colorado, convection-allowing model forecasts from 6 to 18 h in advance did show similar structures to what occurred, warranting further simulations to investigate the unique mesoscale and misoscale features associated with the macroburst. Significance Statement: A macroburst occurred in the early morning hours of 9 June in Akron, Colorado, causing extensive damage and widespread power outages. The macroburst and related wavelike features were captured at high resolution by several weather observation stations in the surrounding area and reveal unprecedented oscillations in both temperature and pressure on scales of seconds. The strongest convective wind gusts in Colorado history were also recorded at a 10-m tower outside of Akron, in excess of 50 m s−1. Atmospheric soundings show low-level moisture and dry air aloft, but a sharp low-level temperature inversion that is not typical of a downburst profile. Observational and modeling analyses reveal the potential for gravity wave interactions in addition to strong radial outflow from the macroburst and motivate further work to investigate the complex small-scale processes of this event. The wear behavior of tire tread rubber composites has attracted widespread attention of researcher duo to its serious environmental pollution and high frequency of occurrence for a long time. Herein, a new test method is developed, an improved Akron friction testing machine on a laboratory scale was utilized to estimate the wear loss and mechanism of the rubber composites under rolling and sliding coupling condition. The results indicated that the wear loss quickly increases with the increase of the relative sliding velocity. The main wear mechanism, including adhesive, thermofatigue, tear and curl wear, was governed by the thermal deposition of the worn surface. Scanning electron microscope analysis showed thermal decomposition tear region gradually expanded on the worn surface by increasing relative sliding velocity. The heat distribution numerical analysis supported the experimental results, which confirmed that the heat distribution of the worn surface is entirely consistent with the distribution of the thermal decomposition tear region. In recent years, many anthropologists in the United States have become involved with organizations that serve newly resettled refugees, especially as budgets for the agencies have been severely cut since 2017. Here, we reflect on some of our experiences working with Refugees from the Congo Wars (RFCWs) and address some of the challenges we have faced as applied/practicing anthropologists and resettlement support personnel. Juxtaposing a larger southern city—Tampa—with a smaller rustbelt city—Akron—we see many commonalities but also a few differences that likely relate to host city size and existing diversity profiles. Drawing on almost 3 years of research, we offer some shared observations and comparative divergences among populations of RFCWs that shed light on issues of: timing of arrival in the United States, community and class, schooling, gender and family, and food and diet, for people working with this population. Access to certain types of facilities can promote health and well‐being. When population and facilities are not uniformly distributed across the landscape, inequities in accessibility may occur. Current research into GIS‐based accessibility measures has focused primarily on spatial inequities between different geographic locations but not directly on differences in accessibility between subgroups of the population. The research presented here develops a new method for measuring differential accessibility to facilities between various segments of the population. The method extends concepts and techniques in spatial point pattern analysis that account for the spatial structure of demand and its relationship to supply. In this approach, the traditional Lorenz curve and its associated indices, the Gini coefficient and the dissimilarity index, which are used to measure inequality, are recast in spatial terms for measuring differences in accessibility between population subgroups. An analysis of spatial accessibility to grocery stores in Akron, OH illustrates the value of the spatial Lorenz curve and its associated indices compared to other methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The crosslinked structure formed by the metal coordination bonding provides excellent and new properties for rubber materials. Herein, the crosslinking of acrylonitrile‐butadiene rubber (NBR) is induced by introducing aluminum ammonium sulfate (NH4Al(SO4)2·12H2O) particles. The crosslinking behavior, morphology, mechanical properties, and the Akron abrasion resistance of NBR/NH4Al(SO4)2·12H2O composites were fully explored. The results show that the three‐dimensional crosslinking structure is held together by metal–ligand coordination bonds between the nitrile group and AI(III). The coordination crosslink density exhibits a considerable increase with the addition of NH4Al(SO4)2·12H2O. Thus, the mechanical properties and abrasion resistance of the obtained composites are better than that of NBR/sulfur system. Interestingly, the elongation at break for NBR/NH4Al(SO4)2·12H2O composites is over 2000% due to the nature of coordination bonds. The abrasion volume loss decreases to 0.4 cm3 for NBR/NH4Al(SO4)2·12H2O composites with 20 phr NH4Al(SO4)2·12H2O particles as compared to 0.75 cm3 for NBR/sulfur system. The article recounts what second-year graduate students taking up the industrial-organizational program at the University of Akron (UA) in Ohio found to be the major issues and changes they encountered as first-year students. It offers suggestions on how to facilitate a smooth and fluid transition process for new students within the graduate setting. It also describes how certain aspects of the UA model can be applied to other academic situations.

Focusing on a course titled "History, Communities and Memory," this article examines the course content, undergraduate and graduate student learning outcomes, and the pedagogical approaches employed throughout the semester. Using Akron's engaging history and the portrayal of the city in public sites as a case study, the class serves as both an introduction to public history and to the interplay between history and memory. Arthur Chickering and Zelda Gamson's seven principles for best practice inform the teaching methodologies discussed here, combined with a focus on critical thinking and civic engagement. The course content emphasizes how communities and historic sites present their history (or histories) and (following the work of Maurice Halbwachs) how memory operates simultaneously on both the individual level and the social one. College instructors and students participated in a pilot project at the University of Akron to enhance student learning through the use of a common teaching pedagogy, peer instruction. The teaching pedagogy was supported by the use of technology, an electronic personal response system, which recorded student responses. The authors report their experiences in using this technology-enhanced teaching pedagogy and provide another example of an active and collaborative learning tool that instructors can use to move beyond “chalk and talk.” Preliminary survey results from students participating in this pilot project are also reported. We use new data on the location and background of entrants into the US tyre industry to analyse why the industry became so regionally concentrated around Akron, Ohio, a small city with no compelling advantages for tyre production. We analyse where the Ohio entrants originated and conduct various analyses of how proximity to other tyre firms affected the longevity of tyre producers. We also examine how the heritage of the Ohio entrants influenced their origin and longevity. Our findings suggest that the Akron tyre cluster grew primarily through a process of organisational reproduction and heredity rather than through agglomeration economies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Joint Master of Social Work Program of Cleveland State University and The University of Akron was the first MSW program taught entirely via distance education that was fully accredited by the Council of Social Work Education. Over the past nine years, the Joint MSW Program has grown from one cohort of 24 full-time students to a program with an enrollment of 186 full-time, part-time and Advanced Standing students. This innovative Joint MSW Program has required an ongoing process of collaboration, refinement, and flexibility. The purpose of this article is to provide a narrative of the experiences of delivering an entire MSW program via distance education, including obstacles that have been overcome as well as recommendations for other programs considering distance education. In January 2001, The University of Akron began a campus- wide wireless laptop initiative. The first phase of the initiative included a pilot project in which 350 IBM ThinkPad laptops were distributed to several university departments and organizations. Bierce Library received 60 of the laptops to lend to students for use in the library and currently circulates 150 of these computers. Teaching geriatric principles to medical students is important because of the increasing geriatric population. Family physicians are in a strategic position to provide this teaching because they provide much of the care for the elderly. The challenge in developing a geriatric curriculum is to determine the content, implement it efficiently, and evaluate its impact. We developed a geriatric assessment experience for third-year medical students. The students were introduced to a geriatric assessment tool and asked to identify a patient, complete the assessment, and record key elements of functional assessment. Student attitudes were measured before and after completing the assessment. The students rated their knowledge, comfort, and experience with a comprehensive geriatric assessment. Students listed approximately seven problems and four recommendations per patient. On average, students identified one functional problem for each patient. There were significant increases in knowledge, comfort, and experience with a comprehensive geriatric assessment. This educational tool met all of our goals. The students identified elderly patients' functional problems, created care plans focused on function and prevention, and reported an increase in positive attitudes about their knowledge, comfort, and experience with geriatric assessment. Russell Vernon, a second-generation owner and manager of West Point Market In Akron, Ohio, must decide whether to settle, go to court, or reconcile (mutually agreeable solution) with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on an allegation of racial discrimination. He firmly believes that he is innocent. If he chooses to reconcile or settle the case out of court, he could be construed as a racist. Simple Summary: With resistance to the pyrethroid family of insecticides increasing, it is more important than ever that tools are available to measure the efficacy of alternatives. Pyriproxyfen (PPF) is an alternative insecticide whose mode of action sterilises adult mosquitoes. Consequently, the efficacy of PPF-based tools can be measured through visual examination of egg development by trained experts. This, however, can be a time-consuming process for which the required expertise can be difficult to train and is not available in many contexts. As such, we propose that an objective machine learning program, which can automatically classify the fertility status of adult mosquito ovaries via a colour image, be developed to improve the speed, accuracy, and consistency of assessment. This study shows that a convolutional neural network, built in Python's TensorFlow library, can quickly classify images of dissected ovaries into either 'fertile' or 'infertile' with a high accuracy rate. Such an application would be a practical and accessible tool available to all researchers studying the efficacy of PPF or other insecticides with a similar mode of action. Pyriproxyfen (PPF) may become an alternative insecticide for areas where pyrethroid-resistant vectors are prevalent. The efficacy of PPF can be assessed through the dissection and assessment of vector ovaries. However, this reliance on expertise is subject to limitations. We show here that these limitations can be overcome using a convolutional neural network (CNN) to automate the classification of egg development and thus fertility status. Using TensorFlow, a resnet-50 CNN was pretrained with the ImageNet dataset. This CNN architecture was then retrained using a novel dataset of 524 dissected ovary images from An. gambiae s.l. An. gambiae Akron, and An. funestus s.l., whose fertility status and PPF exposure were known. Data augmentation increased the training set to 6973 images. A test set of 157 images was used to measure accuracy. This CNN model achieved an accuracy score of 94%, and application took a mean time of 38.5 s. Such a CNN can achieve an acceptable level of precision in a quick, robust format and can be distributed in a practical, accessible, and free manner. Furthermore, this approach is useful for measuring the efficacy and durability of PPF treated bednets, and it is applicable to any PPF-treated tool or similarly acting insecticide. Many questions arise related to courses to be taken by accounting students if they plan to enter industrial accounting. At the University of Akron, Ohio, the Akron chapter of the National Association of Cost Accountants (NACA) formed an educational guidance committee to help students. The University of Akron sought the assistance of the Akron chapter for the purpose of improving its curriculum and aiding the students who would be working for employers represented by the wide membership of NACA. The University turned to the Akron chapter because it includes accountants engaged in a wide range of activities, from the one-man accounting office to the controllers of some of America's largest factories. All types of educational backgrounds, from those who studied their accounting by correspondence to graduates of colleges in every region of the country are represented in its membership. The studies involving measurement of marital success or of factors correlated with it have been criticized on various grounds. The present study involved a check on the validity of the prediction scale presented by Ernest Burgess and Leonard Cottrell, when applied to a sample differing in composition froth that used in its original development. The author, partly as a matter of convenience, chose Akron, Ohio, as the area from which to draw the sample. Akron is an industrial city of a little less than three hundred thousand population. A sample of three hundred couples was selected from this area. The sample was found to be biased toward Protestants of North European origin. It is not claimed that the sample is completely representative of all sub-groups of Akron. However, the sampling procedure was designed to obtain a random sample of a population. The questionnaire used contained items from the Burgess-Cottrell marital adjustment scale and background items from which Burgess and Cottrell had made their prediction scale.
