Spain is an eminently tourist country, which allows the creation of countless jobs and contributes greatly to GDP growth. Millions of people visit this country every year, and more than 80% do so through air transport. This paper studies whether the 13 Spanish airlines with the highest revenues in 2018 were efficient in that year, thus filling a gap in the tourism literature. For this purpose, the non-parametric DEA technique has been used, using as inputs the total number of workers in the company and the total number of seats available (airline capacity). Total revenue and number of passengers have been used as outputs. The results obtained show that all the airlines studied within the IAG group (Iberia, Vueling, Air Nostrum, Iberia Express) are efficient, in addition to the Canary Islands airlines (Binter Canarias, Canarias Airlines and Canary Fly) and Air Europa. Likewise, the reference airlines for the inefficient ones have been determined, which will have to reduce the number of workers or make changes in capacity in order to achieve greater income and be efficient. This special issue on The Nordic Tourists in the Atlantic Islands of Azores, Madeira and Canaries was prepared in 2012, when the economic crisis had started in 2008, with the aim to focus if Nordic tourists' flux in Atlantic Islands was common and persistent along the years, representing an important proportion of the tourists in these islands. Despite its importance, no research has yet analyzed this tourism flux in the Atlantic islands. This special issue focuses on Atlantic islands, aimed at understanding the role of Scandinavian Tourists in Atlantic Islands. The call for papers received 15 papers from which 6 were selected based on their quality. The selected papers were presented in a conference held in Azores by the Regional Observatory of Tourism from Azores to discuss the accepted papers on 29 April May 2012. This special issue contains papers that went through a revision process in the conference, and each paper was revised by two blind reviewers. Some papers had to be revised twice and the final result is presented here. In this introduction, I present a description of Nordic tourism since 2002 in these islands that serve as the subject of the papers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Small islands in peripheral regions are currently perceived as attractive tourist destinations. Governance plays an important role as a strategy for the revival of such destinations to achieve a more productive, environmental, social and sustainable management structure. ‘Good’ governance of a destination depends on all the actors involved in the tourism network. Such governance requires a redefinition of relations between government and society and minimal boundaries between public and private sectors. This paper has analysed the level of implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in a tourist destination that is a biosphere reserve (BR), the island of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands, Spain), from a comprehensive approach involving a tourism supply chain (TSC) with private and public agents. The focal firms analysed within the TSC have been tourist accommodation establishments in Fuerteventura. The paper shows that the level of involvement of tourist accommodation in CSR is positive. However, this involvement is not sufficiently high to meet the requirements of a destination designated as a BR. Therefore, coordination policies should be developed that promote governance systems and further enhance sustainability in the destination. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper deals with the analysis of the number of tourists travelling to the Canary Islands by means of using different seasonal statistical models. Deterministic and stochastic seasonality is considered. For the latter case, we employ seasonal unit roots and seasonally fractionally integrated models. As a final approach, we also employ a model with possibly different orders of integration at zero and the seasonal frequencies. All these models are compared in terms of their forecasting ability in an out-of-sample experiment. The results in the paper show that a simple deterministic model with seasonal dummy variables and AR(1) disturbances produce better results than other approaches based on seasonal fractional and integer differentiation over short horizons. However, increasing the time horizon, the results cannot distinguish between the model based on seasonal dummies and another using fractional integration at zero and the seasonal frequencies. There has been considerable discussion of sustainable tourism development, in both theory and practice. Less attention has been paid to the discourses, ideologies and power relations which help to shape 'sustainable' tourism policies and planning instruments. This paper analyses recent initiatives introduced by the regional government of the Canary Islands, designed to bring about a more sustainable model of regional tourism, including a temporary moratorium on tourism development and the drafting of a strategic and normative set of guidelines for sustainable tourism. The paper considers the contested nature of the public debate that accompanied these initiatives within the wider context of the regionally distinct pattern of tourism and capitalist development. It is argued that the legacy of uneven development, and the entrenched power of regional economic and political elites, is likely to undermine the prospects for a just model of sustainable tourism, and to consolidate the continuing privatisation of space and socio-spatial inequalities across the region. Municipalities and regions are often used as an object of tourism analysis at the subnational level. This occurs because administrative borders are used to implement tourism policies and collect statistical information. However, administrative boundaries may not always be suitable for studying tourism destinations at a local level. Sometimes, particularly in high-density tourism destinations, several differentiated tourism areas occupy a single municipality; tourism areas may, and often do, extend beyond municipal boundaries and tourism destinations may not occupy the whole of the municipal area. As such, a new level of analysis is often required: the micro-destination. There are few tourism concepts as imprecise as that of the destination. Therefore, the process of identifying and establishing the boundaries of a micro-destination is by no means a straightforward one. This paper presents six criteria for establishing the boundaries of this type of tourism area. Of these six, the two primary criteria used are: the concentration of tourism establishments; and tourism typologies and supply characteristics. These criteria have been applied as part of a pilot study in the Canary Islands. Statistical information for nine micro-destinations is generated using the geolocation of tourism establishments together with information obtained from both supply-side and demand-side surveys. Tourist activity constitutes one of the signs of Economic and socio-cultural development in the Canaries; it is considered the fundamental and strategic point of regional economic growth and the driving force behind the growth of other section. This paper attempts to define and provide a more in-depth study and awareness of these questions. For this reason, the prompt identification and appropriate response to these structural changes and new demands will aid the hospitality sector in achieving suitable competitive advantages. The aim of the paper is to analyse various organisational factors affecting hotel units located in different tourism destinations in the Canary Islands and to study distinctive organisational populations, with their own contextual and structural answers. This paper considers the World Heritage Site of Garajonay National Park on the island of La Gomera (Canary Islands). It is based on a research project carried out during 1999-2000 that explored the circumstances surrounding its declaration as a National Park and inclusion into the World Heritage List, in conjunction with the consequences for local communities which ensued. The proximity of Garajonay National Park to a large concentration of mass coastal tourism constitutes a further source of potential conflict which may have a wider relevance to other sites of a similar and indeed diverse nature. This paper, therefore, examines the configurations of space and social relations occasioned by the processes of social change, conservation and tourism development in and adjacent to this protected forest. In doing so it elucidates the manner in which these processes are locally mediated in and through contested values over the meaning and purpose of nature conservation in this 'world heritage space'. Tourism is one of the economic sectors that contributes the most to the gross domestic product in many countries, moving, in turn, other economic sectors such as transport. In particular, the automotive industry constitutes an economic subsector that moves vast amounts of money. Concerning tourism and transport sectors, car rental is a crucial element contributing considerably to gross domestic product and job creation. Due to the effects that vehicle rental seems to have on various economic sectors, it seems interesting to know why a tourist chooses to rent a car during their vacation in a specific destination. This work aims to study those factors that can be considered relevant and affect the probability of renting a vehicle. The document addressed the following research topics: (a) identifying significant variables; and (b) can information on these factors help car rental firms? Empirically, it is shown that more tourists do not rent a car and this fact has to be considered. Thus, the classical logistic and Bayesian regression models do not seem adequate in this case, so that the authors will consider an asymmetric logistic regression model. This work analyzes 28,235 tourists who visited the Canary Islands during 2017. From a Bayesian point of view, asymmetric logistics regression is chosen as the best model because it detects relevant development factors not seen by standard logistic regressions. In light of the document's findings, various practice recommendations improve decision-making in this field. Considerable attention has been given in the economic literature to Dutch disease, with symptoms of the disease being extensively described inmany different contexts. Dutch disease is a condition which describes the reaction of an economy, subject to rapid change, on finding new export uses for natural resources. None of the studies, however, has focused on the tourist industry as a source of increased wealth through the exploitation of natural resources, such as beaches or natural areas, using typical mass models of tourism development. By examining two different Spanish regions, this paper provides evidence that the Balearics and the Canary Islands, whose economies are heavily orientated towards tourism, both show signs of Dutch disease and that, as a result, their economic growth might be compromised in coming years. While sustainable development is recognized as an essential requirement for achieving economic goals without degrading the environment, major problems arise in defining methods for formulating and implementing sustainable strategic actions at the macro-level, including islands. Bearing in mind this limitation, this research paper will attempt to present a strategic planning methodology for drawing up strategic issues for tourism development from the point of view of sustainability, which is particularly appropriate to islands. The authors first review existing literature on sustainable development with a view to defining a conceptual approach to sustainability and identifying particular areas for sustainable tourism development in the island context. A methodology for formulating strategic issues for sustainable tourism development in Gran Canaria is then drawn up. Sociocultural aspects, the environment and the economy, with particular emphasis on tourism, are examined in order to identify major strategic issues for sustainable development in Gran Canaria. The literature on water use in hotels has identified numerous determinants of water consumption, but a consensus has yet to be reached on the influence of some of these factors. This article aims to enhance the current research framework on water use in the hotel sector by presenting a case study of one hotel in Tenerife, Canary Islands. The conceptual framework of water consumption in hotels is presented based on the previous literature. Starting from that, basic statistical analysis and bivariate correlations were performed on water consumption data from 2007 to 2019 to determine the significant factors affecting both total water consumption and consumption per guest night. Special attention was paid to water usage in gardens and the impact of weather conditions, as there is a lack of research focused on them. Additionally, the water management actions of the hotel were classified according to the business' themes proposed for the Sustainable Development Goals, using an internationally recognized guide, thus addressing one of the gaps identified in the literature. The results generally support previous research findings, but some discrepancies were noted regarding the number of guest nights and the effectiveness of implementing water-saving measures. This raises new questions about the characteristics of various water-saving measures, such as room renovation, and their influence on customer behavior, which may alter the intended impact on water consumption. Therefore, the findings of this study can provide an insight into unclear aspects in this area. Subsidizing residents on airlines is a common policy in a number of countries. However, the question arises as to how changes in this policy affect the travel behavior of residents in specific regions? To address this, we analyze the effect of an "exogenous shock" (i.e., an increase in the resident subsidy) on two Spanish archipelagos when they travel away from the islands. Our Difference-in-Difference and matching estimations find that the causal impact of the policy change is different for resident passengers across the two regions affected. Although the length of stay was reduced for resident passengers in both archipelagos by 10%–15% after the shock, their expenditure at destination per day increased by 13% on the Balearic Islands, while showing no significant change on the Canary Islands. Tourist destinations are constantly required to renew their products, services and projected image. This is possible, among other processes, through business innovation and co-management between tour operators and administrations in order to reach markets. This paper focusses on case studies of two specialised agrotourism businesses located in Fuerteventura (Canary Islands), and shows how innovation in products is limited when tour operators also come to control the supply of small and medium-sized companies, at least in destinations where mass tourism predominate. Here remotivation is presented as a means of providing the tourist with local supply in the destination in a way that allows it to stand out, aid the creation of local businesses and products, enrich the tourist experience and redistribute the profits of tourism across the area. In the 1960s and 1970s, it was hoped that tourism in the Spanish Sahara (today Western Sahara) would become "a source of wealth" both for Sahrawis and Spaniards. Indeed, travel agencies from northern Europe increasingly included the Spanish Sahara in their holiday packages for the nearby Canary Islands. This article explores the experiences, expectations and gendered rhetoric of modernity and tradition in relation to tourism in the Spanish Sahara. By incorporating Spanish soldiers in the analytical framework of travel, the article scrutinises the close links between late colonialism, repressive modernisation and the tourist industry, opening up avenues for future research. The complex and international nature of tourism contributes to make it one of the industries most exposed to diverse critical situations. With tourism being an activity with relevant impact on the development of economy, identifying the types of crises that affect the sector emerges as a key issue for hotel management. In this paper, the analysis of the information provided by a panel of experts reveal that not only are economic crises, but the tourism industry is facing multiple types of risks and adverse situations. Local authorities should manage a substantial share of the infrastructure and services required by tourism. In these areas are combined services to the tourist population and local population, representing its resizing and diversification. As a result, the municipalities affected by this duality must adapt the management of its resources, producing significant imbalances. This distinction has opened an important debate about the concept of «tourist municipalities» and «positive discrimination» compared to other municipalities. A formula that tries to compensate for the imbalance generated by tourism in local management. Currently the Canary Islands have no official criteria for the definition of a «tourist municipalities» and have not been agreed on an official list that identifies them. This paper models daily air passenger arrivals and their volatility for the Balearic and Canary Islands, Spain. Due to climatic conditions, tourism seasonality is clear in the Balearics, with an increasing number of arrivals during the winter months. In the Canary Islands, the seasonal pattern is different, with decreasing numbers in recent years. Three univariate conditional volatility models are estimated for both the Balearics and the Canaries, concentrating on empirical issues relating to short- and long-run persistence, as well as the symmetric and asymmetric effects of positive and negative shocks of equal magnitude on volatility. This paper examines whether there is an 'insular rent' for Spanish hotels. The authors look at whether the hotels located in the Balearic and Canary Islands establish higher prices once quality has been controlled. They use quantile regression because it has informational advantages, given that independent variable effects are not constant along the hotel price distribution. The main result is that, once quality is taken into account, it seems there is a positive rent for island hotels. However, this rent is highly related to a hotel brand name effect. It seems that the hotel brand name reduces consumer information asymmetry problems by signalling higher quality standards or reducing the variance in the quality of a hotel given its ex ante known characteristics. Abstract: This paper presents a dynamic model of international tourism demand to Canary Islands. The empirical analysis exploits the panel structure of the dataset (for the 15 most important countries of origin of tourists over the period 1992–2002) by a Generalized Method of Moments estimation of a dynamic model taking into account unobserved country-specific effects. The preferred model is the GMM-DIFF proposed by Arellano and Bond, however other models are also shown for comparison. A dynamic model where the lagged dependent variable is included as regressor is used to obtain short-run and long-run elasticities. Problems arising from the non-stationarity of data are dealt with by using a model in first differences. The estimated coefficient for the lagged depended variable is always significant and may reflect a high degree of consumer loyalty or an important effect of word of mouth in determining demand of international tourism. In brief, the results suggests that tourism demand to Canary Islands must be considered as a luxury good and is highly dependent on the evolution of relative prices and cost of travel between origin and destination country. The Canary Islands represent a set of mass market tourist destinations evolving in the last decades towards a predominant sun and beach tourism product. In this process environmental resources have played a role in attracting tourism demand, but have also been subject to pressure and transformation. This paper presents results on the valuation of some environmental assets utilized in the tourism industry of the Canary Islands. It is shown that these assets are valuable for the tourism industry in economic terms, and therefore policy measures undertaken to protect and enhance these values might have contributed to a more sustainable tourist product in the long run. This paper is set in the context of tourism marketing, more specifically in the process of tourist destination image formation. By means of empirical research applied to a representative sample of tourists visiting the island of Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain), the influence of tourists' internal characteristics or personal factors on the different components of perceived image have been analyzed. More precisely the relationships between the perceived image and the tourists' motivations, their accumulated experience of vacation travel and the socio-demographic characteristics referring to their gender, age, level of education, social class and country of residence are assessed. The results indicate that: (1) motivations influence the affective component of image; (2) the experience of vacation travel has a significant relationship with cognitive and affective images, and (3) the socio-demo graphic characteristics influence the cognitive and affective assessment of image. British migration to Tenerife has increased dramatically over recent years, with a visible rise in young British settlers who seek jobs in tourism-related sectors. Yet despite significant numbers of young British migrants to Mediterranean and Canarian destinations, the existence of young British people as a newly emergent migrant group has to date received little sociological attention. However, recent theoretical developments in the migration literature have begun to draw attention to new migration typologies, and the fact that the old political and sociological concerns and dichotomies within migration analyses (forced versus voluntary, skilled versus unskilled, legal versus illegal and poor versus rich) have become increasingly blurred and so not entirely useful in addressing questions about the new, diverse motivations and modalities within more recent migration (King, 2002; Cohen, 1995 ). Russell King has recommended that analyses of new European migrant phenomena should recognise that migrant narratives of self-improvement and self-realisation can be pivotal. Drawing on interviews and survey data, this paper discusses young British migrant discourses in Tenerife, in terms of how they might fit with King's theoretical concerns with identity reproduction. Central themes include the desire to escape a crest-fallen and 'overrun' Britain, the self-reflexive significance of 'sun-seeking' and travel, and Tenerife as an idealised geographical and cultural destination. It will look at how specifically classed, raced, gendered and nationalised identities are lived out within this particular location and how these processes can inform the discursive reproduction of a white, British working-class utopia. The importance of fishing tourism for destinations is often analysed through the expenditure levels of tourists, with image, satisfaction and loyalty being under-researched areas. This article empirically tests a structural equation model to assess the relationship between the satisfaction, expenditure and loyalty of fishing tourists. Two dimensions were considered in each case: 1) overall and catch-related satisfaction, 2) expenditure on tourist and fishery products and services, and 3) behavioural and attitudinal loyalty. The study also examines destination attributes that are relevant in explaining the overall satisfaction of fishing tourists. By using data collected from 482 anglers visiting the Canary Islands (Spain) and Cape Verde, the study finds that overall satisfaction increases with the perception of a healthier and less polluted environment at destinations. This was found to be a dominant factor in the context of other attributes that also impact anglers' satisfaction. Besides, satisfaction was found to be an antecedent of spending, but only on the components of the destination's nautical offer. Finally, satisfaction with the catch was the only factor with a direct and positive relationship to loyalty. In this study, we estimate the emissions in terms of category of hotel, with the data of a sample of 12 hotels of 5, 4 and 3 stars in the Canary Islands (Spain), located in the most arid eastern islands of the archipelago, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, where there are a total of 122 hotels and this sampling represents 10% of the hotels of these islands where water for consumption comes from desalination plants using seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO), which was chosen. Water consumption was measured not considering consumption due to irrigation and swimming pools and comparing the generation of water by means of desalination plants of the hotels or external plant centralized with public distribution. Considering the energy and water consumption of the hotels in the study, their carbon footprints, scope 1 and 2 and obtaining average values of emissions between 14.23 kg CO2/person night (CO2/p) for hotels with own SWRO and 15.16 CO2/p for hotels with external water distribution. These data were compared to hotels with the same characteristics and consumptions in mainland Spain, proving that average emissions from the islands for the energy are 1.27 higher and for water production are 3.89 higher for own SWRO and 7.87 superior for distribution by centralized external SWRO. The Canary Islands, as a sensitive and vulnerable tourist destination, with their external energy dependence, their great ecological value, and their need for water desalination, make for a good laboratory to test the application of measures and improvements in the systems of industrial water generation, and in the conservation of energy in buildings, to try to turn these establishments into nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB). The responsible management of cultural heritage requires the formation of a competitive tourism product, which in turn requires a high level of collaboration, the need for diversification and differentiation from other tourism sites. The application of governance mechanisms and their effect on the optimization of visitorship in the heritage tourism industry has been understudied. Although there are four models of management in museums, the needs of heritage sites invite an analysis of them, particularly in the consideration of the role of the stakeholders in shaping the product offered. Four case studies in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) examine how the application of local governance mechanisms affects museums and interpretation centers to optimize the goals of the tourism product. For this analysis, a qualitative analysis has been carried out through direct observation and interviews, analyzing the results with CAQDAS. The study found that strategic planning linked to the territory and public-private partnerships could increase effectiveness and efficiency in the allocation of public resources, and that the application of certain governance strategies could increase the impact of stakeholder involvement in the efficacy of the site management. Lanzarote is the most eastern island of the Canary archipelago (Spain). An important touristic resort, it was a pioneer territory in the fight against land speculation and was distinguished as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1993. Despite this, recent police and court investigations have shown the existence of illegalities and corruption in the granting of building licenses in two of the most touristic municipalities, Yaiza and Teguise. The article examines the opportunities for urban corruption and the deterrents in place at the local level in Lanzarote between 1998 and 2006. It shows that corruption derived not only from an inadequate formal incentive structure, but also from the prevalence of certain expectations contrary to the common good and from the absence of 'principled principals' willing to ensure that agents acting on their behalf did not engage in corruption. Morphological changes in dunes as an indicator of anthropogenic interferences in arid dune fields. In: Conley, D.C., Masselink, G., Russell, P.E. and O'Hare, T.J. (eds.) Coastal dunes systems have been widely modified by human activities, especially in recent decades. Some of the changes have modified the aeolian landforms which characterize these environments. The dune systems of the Canary Islands can be considered as arid systems due to its temperature and rainfall levels. For this reason, the speed at which the geomorphologic process (natural or induced by human activities) occur are more significant than in dune systems located at either temperate or tropical regions. In this sense, the Canary Islands beach-dune systems are ideal for testing the effects of human activity on these environments. This work identifies major alterations, from the 60's, on three dune systems where the tourism activity has developed to a considerable extent: Maspalomas (Gran Canaria), Corralejo (Fuerteventura) and Famara (Lanzarote). To analyse these changes, historical and current aerial photographs and orthophotographs were used, as well as field work. Changes have been classified by the causes that induced them: I) urban development; II) beach equipment; III) beach users; IV) maintenance activities; V) a combination of some of these former causes. Results indicate that urban development is the main cause of the alteration of these dune fields. In Maspalomas and Famara less than 35% of their surfaces are free of human actions capable of producing morphological changes, while in Corralejo this percentage reaches 63%. In the analyzed period, the surface of the dune fields have been reduced, some of the existing dunes have been modified, and new morphologies (natural and artificial) have appeared. The complex reality of a tourist destination requires it to be managed as an integrated system. This work presents a strategic evaluation model of tourist destinations that permits their reality at a given moment to be visualized from an overall perspective. To that end, the model, which focuses on tourism supply chain management, specifies the principal attributes determining destination competitiveness. On that basis, this work analyzes the internal and relational capabilities of each attribute represented in a matrix according to their strategic value. This theoretical framework is empirically tested by means of a study to evaluate the tourist destination of Gran Canaria, which reflects the competitive reality of a mature destination.
