Traditional packaging materials feed the growing global food protection. However, these packaging materials are not conducive to environment and have not the ability to kill bacteria. Herein, a green and simple strategy is reported for food packaging protection and long-term antibacterial using carboxymethylcellulose-based photothermal film (CMC@CuS NPs/PVA) that consists of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) immobilized copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). With satisfied oxygen transmittance (0.03 cc/m 2 /day) and water vapor transmittance (163.3 g/m 2 /day), the tensile strength, tear strength and burst strength reached to 3401.2 N/m, 845.7 mN and 363.6 kPa, respectively, which could lift 4.5 L of water. The composite film had excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and photothermal stability. Under the irradiation of near infrared (NIR), it can rapidly heated up to 197 °C within 25 s. The antibacterial analysis showed that the inhibition rate of composite film against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) could all reach >99 %. Furthermore, the synthesized CuS NPs was well immobilized and the residual rate of copper kept 98.7 % after 10 days. Noticeably, the composite film can preserve freshness of strawberries for up to 6 days. Hydrogels are highly sought-after absorbent materials for absorbent pads; however, it is still challenging to achieve a satisfactory balance between mechanical performance, water absorption capacity, and active functionalities. In this work, we presented double-network hydrogels synthesized through acrylic acid (AA) polymerization in the presence of quaternized cellulose nanofibrils (QCNF) and Fe 3+ . Spectroscopic and microscopic analyses revealed that the combined QCNF and Fe 3+ facilitated the formation of double-network hydrogels with combined chemical and physical crosslinking. The synergistic effect of QCNF and Fe 3+ resulted in impressive mechanical properties, including tensile strength of 1.98 MPa, fracture elongation of 838.8 %, toughness of 7.47 MJ m -3 , and elastic modulus of 0.35 MPa. In comparison to the single-network PAA hydrogel, the PAA/QCNF/Fe 3+ (PQFe) hydrogels showed higher and relatively stable swelling ratios under varying pH levels and saline conditions. The PQFe hydrogels exhibited notable antioxidant activity, as evidenced by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, and demonstrated effective antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In this work, shellac plasticized with oleic acid was solvent cast to prepare the flexible and water-resistant film for packaging applications. The films were prepared with varying amounts of oleic acid and studied in detail for appearance, surface morphology, thermal, chemical, barrier, mechanical, and robustness. The surface morphology confirmed the smooth surface of films up to SH-OA20 (100:20 w/w; shellac: oleic acid). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that oleic acid reduced the hydrogen bonding of the shellac matrix to provide a plasticization effect. Also, the thermal analysis showed a reduction in the melting enthalpy. Moreover, the plasticized films had a better barrier to water vapor due to increased smoothness and reduction in brittleness. Adding oleic acid also increased the elongation at break up to 40 % without any changes in tensile strength. The flexibility of the films increased with the oleic acid content, making them resistant to burst, crumbling, bending, rolling, and stretching. Oleic acid also showed the retardation of aging and thermal aging of shellac. The characteristics of multi-hydroxyl structure and strong hydrogen bonding in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) make its melting point close to its decomposition temperature, causing melt-processing difficulty. In this work, following the plasticization of small-molecule primary plasticizer acetamide, lignin was demonstrated as a green secondary plasticizer in realizing the melt processing and simultaneous reinforcement of PVA. During the plasticization process, lignin was able to combine with the hydroxyl groups of PVA, so as to destroy the hydrogen bonds and regularity of the PVA chains. The synergistic plasticization effect of lignin dramatically reduced the melting point of PVA from 185 °C to 151 °C. The thermal processing window of PVA composites was expanded from 50 °C to roughly 80 °C after introducing lignin. In contrast to acetamide, the addition of lignin significantly increased the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composites to 71 MPa and 1.34 GPa, respectively. Meanwhile, lignin helped to hinder the migration of acetamide via hydrogen bonds. With the addition of lignin, the composites also displayed enhanced hydrophobicity and excellent UV shielding performance. A simplified and green strategy was provided for the synthesis of cellulose acetate. Cellulose acetate (CA) was isolated from the directly acetylated eucalyptus powder after hydrothermal treatment to selectively remove hemicellulose without delignification. The conversion rate of cellulose (90.75%) and the yield of the acetylated product (61.34%) were greatly improved by hydrothermal treatment, while the re-condensation of lignin during hydrothermal treatment made no adverse difference. The characterization results verified that the acetylated product was cellulose acetate with uniform molecular weight, good thermal stability and semi-crystalline structure. Moreover, CA was used to reinforce polylactic acid (PLA) films prepared by solvent casting. The PLA-CA composite with 5 wt% CA showed an increase of 80.63% in tensile strength and 59.51% in Young's modulus, and their density decreased from 1.2427 g/cm 3 to 1.0028 g/cm 3 . To avoid complex and toxic chemical cross-linking reaction, cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) was used to enhance the performance of hexagonal boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/lignin nanoparticle (LNP) composite film. The results showed that CNF and LNP had synergistic actions on enhancing the tensile strength, thermal conductivity and stability of the film. The 4 wt% CNF-reinforced composites exhibited the higher through-plane thermal conductivity (up to 1.76 W/mK) than that without CNF (1.44 W/mK), revealing an increase of 22.2% at the same BNNS loading. Meanwhile, the maximum decomposition rate (R max ) was roughly 0.6%/ o C, a decrease of 14.3% compared with the composite film without LNP. Furthermore, the rigidity of composite film was strengthened by incorporating CNF and LNP, the tensile strength of the composite film showed the highest value of 35.0 MPa with 4 wt% CNF and 0.01 g LNP, while this of BNNS/PVA/LNP film and BNNS/PVA/CNF film was only 30.66 MPa and 30.62 MPa, respectively. Results from large-scale randomized clinical trials support the application of prophylactic dressings to provide protection from body-weight force-induced deformations known to damage skin and underlying tissues, which often result in pressure injuries (pressure ulcers). This laboratory study using a new method for aging dressings in simulated use followed by tensile testing was conducted to further understand the protective effect of sacral prophylactic dressings (SPDs) in alleviating tissue deformations in the sacral region through the course of typical application. Specifically, four SPDs were exposed to a simulation of the clinical environment incorporating saline solution absorption, mechanical loading, and repetitive sliding-induced shear. After aging, the protective endurance of the SPDs was measured through tensile testing to determine their effectiveness against tissue-damaging forces over time.This study uses the concepts of axial stiffness, protective endurance, and elastic limit to describe more accurately the protective aspects of SPDs under dry and moist conditions and how they interact with the skin and underlying tissues over the life of the dressing. The authors propose two primary features in SPD effectiveness in preventing pressure injuries: high conformability (ie, low flexural stiffness) and protective endurance (the dressing's capacity to maintain biomechanical performance when moist).

Stretchable and compressible hydrogels based on natural polymers have received immense considerations for electronics. The feasibility of using pure natural polymer-based hydrogels could be improved if their mechanical behaviors satisfy the requirements of practical applications. Herein, we report highly stretchable (tensile strain ∼126%) and compressible (compression strain ∼80%) cellulose ionic hydrogels (CIHs) among pure natural polymer-based hydrogels including cellulose, chitin, and chitosan via chemical cross-linking based on free radical polymerization of allyl cellulose in NaOH/urea aqueous solution. In addition, the hydrogels have good transparency (transmittance of ∼89% at 550 nm) and ionic conductivity (∼0.16 mS cm -1 ) and can be worked at -20 °C without freezing and visual loss of transparency. Moreover, the CIHs can serve as reliable and stable strain sensors and have been successfully used to monitor human activities. Significantly, the various properties of hydrogel can be controlled through rationally adjusting the chemically cross-linked density. Our methodology will prove useful in developing the satisfied mechanical and transparent CIHs for a myriad of applications in flexible electronics.

Improvement of mechanical and water barrier properties is critical for gelatin films when applied to edible food packaging. A liquid smoke (LS) obtained from hawthorn nucleus was used to improve the performance of gelatin film based on its abundant compounds. Through SPME-GC-MS analysis, 86 volatile and semi-volatile chemical compounds was detected in LS, in which the total carbonyl compounds were 27.60%, with the main aldehyde as 2-furaldehyde (9.83%). For gelatin films, an observable influence of LS on film transparency was observed in gelatin films, but not for its thickness and microstructure. Desirably, adding LS into gelatin solution increased the tensile strength of the films, with a better value of 16.38 MPa as 3 wt% LS added, compared with the control (10.30 MPa). Accordingly, film elongation decreased with a LS dependent manner. Furthermore, the water resistance properties of gelatin film were improved by the LS addition, which was supported by the results of water contact angle, water vapor permeability. Moreover, the addition of LS also led to a higher insolubility for gelatin films. Also, thermal stability of the LS treated gelatin films was slightly enhanced with the DSC analysis. According to the FTIR spectra and crosslinking degree detection results, all the above enhancing of gelatin film should be attributed to the crosslinking between carbonyl groups in LS and amide functionalities in gelatin based on nucleophilic reaction., (© 2016 Institute of Food Technologists®)
