Positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) potentially offers several advantages over positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), for example, no CT radiation dose and soft tissue images from MR acquired at the same time as the PET. However, obtaining accurate linear attenuation correction (LAC) factors for the lung remains difficult in PET/MRI. LACs depend on electron density and in the lung, these vary significantly both within an individual and from person to person. Current commercial practice is to use a single‐valued population‐based lung LAC, and better estimation is needed to improve quantification. Given the under‐appreciation of lung attenuation estimation as an issue, the inaccuracy of PET quantification due to the use of single‐valued lung LACs, the unique challenges of lung estimation, and the emerging status of PET/MRI scanners in lung disease, a review is timely. This paper highlights past and present methods, categorizing them into segmentation, atlas/mapping, and emission‐based schemes. Potential strategies for future developments are also presented. Jet pull is an observable designed to probe colour flow between jets. Thus far, a particular projection of the pull vector, the pull angle, has been employed to distinguish colour flow between jets produced by a colour singlet or an octet decay. This is of particular importance in order to separate the decay of a Higgs boson to a pair of bottom quarks from the QCD background. However, the pull angle is not infra-red and collinear (IRC) safe. In this paper we introduce IRC safe projections of the pull vector that exhibit good sensitivity to colour flow, while maintaining calculability. We calculate these distributions to next-to- leading logarithmic accuracy, in the context of the hadronic decay of a Higgs boson, and compare these results to Monte Carlo simulations. This study allows us to define an IRC safe version of the pull angle in terms of asymmetry distributions. Furthermore, because of their sensitivity to wide-angle soft radiation, we anticipate that these asymmetries can play an important role in assessing subleading colour correlations and their modelling in general-purpose Monte Carlo parton showers. In this paper, we report an integrated soft and transparent visuo-haptic interface, which is compatible with flexible devices and wearable gadgets. The visuo-haptic interface is composed of a touch-sensitive visual display based on polymer waveguides and a dielectric elastomer microactuators (DEMA) array. The touch-sensitive visual display, formed via continuative multistep photolithography, is a multilayered structure with a tactile-sensing layer stacked onto a visual-imaging layer. The dual-functional layer is thin (total thickness: <200 μm) and transparent (transmittance: as high as 90%). The DEMA forming a unit cell of the array is designed as multiple three-dimensional structures with silver nanowires (AgNWs) compliant electrode. When an electric voltage is applied across compliant electrodes formed on the sides, individual microactuators expand directly in an upward direction. Thanks to the vertically deformable design, the DEMA produces programmable large normal forces up to about 30 times of thresholds at a localized area. An output force response of the DEMA is reversible, fast (<1 ms delay), durable (output force degradation: <8% during a million cycles), and large enough to be used in human tactile interfaces. Due to the synergetic benefits from the functional layers, the visuo-haptic interface allows demonstration of programmable tactile response with visual information while being intimately attached on human skin. Elliptical polarized undulators (EPUs) are broadly used in the soft X‐ray energy range. They have the advantage of providing photons with both varied energy and polarization through adjustments to the value of the gap and/or shift magnet arrays in an undulator. Yet these adjustments may create a disturbance on the stability of the electron beam in a storage ring. To correct such a disturbance, it is necessary to establish a feed‐forward table of key nodes in the gap‐shift‐defined two‐dimensional parameter space. Such a table can only be scanned during machine‐study time. For a free‐walking mode, whereby an undulator is allowed to manoeuvre in the whole gap‐shift space, all the key nodes need to be scanned at the expense of a large amount of machine‐study time. This will greatly delay the employment of a full‐polarization capable undulator (especially circularly polarized). By analyzing data‐collecting patterns of user experiments, this paper defines a reduced set of key nodes in gap‐shift parameter space, with the number of key nodes to be scanned for feed‐forwarding scaled down to one‐third of the original; and introduces a new walking mode for EPUs: confined‐walking mode, whereby the undulator is manoeuvred only within the reduced set of key nodes. Such a mode is firstly realized on the EPUs at the DREAMLINE beamline at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF). Under confined‐walking mode, the undulator movements are stable and there is no obvious disturbance to the electron beam with the feed‐forward system in operation. Successful experiments have been carried out using the circularly polarized light obtained via the new walking mode. Stress concentrations and large ground deformations are sources of major concern during the construction of tunnel intersections. Such problems are even more critical in urban areas with buildings affected by the induced progressive ground movements. Therefore, particular considerations have to be taken into account for such projects. This paper deals with the effects of the underground openings on primary tunnels (tunnel intersection) using detailed three-dimensional finite-element models on a case study – Hakim tunnel project, Tehran, Iran. The effects of different stages of construction of intersections on stress distribution and ground deformation are evaluated. Moreover, the effective trailing distance of different faces of the tunnel from the centre of the intersection and the effect of tunnel drilling on internal forces of the shotcrete lining are discussed. The results showed that the values of the surface settlement remain almost unchanged at a distance approximately twice the equivalent diameter of the child tunnel from the intersection centreline. Also, the increase in the circumferential bending moments near the intersection is non-significant compared with the changes in the longitudinal bending moment. It was found that the circumferential and longitudinal bending moments next to the intersection can increase by up to 250 and 350%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) system has been installed on experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) which is used for collecting the line integral of the soft X-ray radiation (SXR) through a pinhole-collimated Beryllium window. The sightline of the 2-D GEM system is tangential to the toroidal field. To obtain the local SXR emission, the Tikhonov algorithm is applied for the imaging of the poloidal cross section emission in the vacuum vessel. In the meanwhile, the L-curve method is used to find an optimized solution of the regularization parameters. The tomography reliability has been tested with a known emission function where the error is also discussed. The tomography method has been coded as a graphic user interface for the fast analysis of GEM experimental data. A picosecond pump-probe resonant soft X-ray scattering measurement system has been developed at the Photon Factory storage ring for highly efficient data collection. A high-repetition-rate high-power compact laser system has been installed to improve efficiency via flexible data acquisition to a sub-MHz frequency in time-resolved experiments. Data are acquired by gating the signal of a channel electron multiplier with a pulse-counting mode capable of discriminating single-bunch soft X-ray pulses in the dark gap of the hybrid operation mode in the storage ring. The photoinduced dynamics of magnetic order for multiferroic manganite SmMn2O5 are clearly demonstrated by the detection of transient changes in the resonant soft X-ray scattering intensity around the Mn LIII- and O K-edges. Soft X-ray monochromators for synchrotron radiation sources have been continuously developed over the years, improving energy resolution and stability. Great effort has been made in improving the surface quality of the optics involved, reaching values permitting diffraction-limited images. Still, one problem has not been solved, nor fully understood, yet: groove placing errors. Nowadays, these are one of the major factors responsible for resolving the power reduction of diffraction-gratings-based X-ray monochromators. Despite decades of use of gratings, there is not yet a universally established method for predicting and simulating the effect of groove placing errors on monochromator performance. This is especially important in the new scenario of high-coherent X-ray sources, i.e. diffraction-limited storage rings and free-electron lasers. To address this problem, in this article an approach based on WISER (Wavefront propagatIon Simulation codE libRary) is presented. WISER is a physical optics simulation package, also available in the user-friendly Orange Synchrotron Radiation Suite - OASYS. Even though it was originally conceived to assess the focusing performance of X-ray mirrors in the presence of height defects, it perfectly simulates the performance of a periodic (or quasi-periodic) structure like a diffraction grating. In this article, the way to use WISER and its application to a specific case, e.g. the design of a monochromator for the upgrade of a beamline at the Advanced Light Source, are shown. One of the most prominent problems of optical/ultraviolet (UV) tidal disruption events (TDEs) is the origin of their optical/UV emission. It has been proposed that the soft X-rays produced by the stellar debris accretion disc can be reprocessed into optical/UV photons by a surrounding optically thick envelope or outflow. However, there is still no detailed models for this mechanism. In this paper, by performing hydrodynamic simulations with radiative transfer, we calculate the optical/UV emission of the circularized stellar debris accretion flow/outflow system. We find that the optical/UV photons can be generated by reprocessing the emission of the accretion flow in the optically thick outflows. The model can well interpret the observed emission properties of optical/UV TDEs, including the emission radius, the radiation temperature, and the blackbody luminosity, as well as the evolution of these quantities with time, providing a strong theoretical basis for understanding the origin of optical/UV TDEs. Research into OJ 287 has been ongoing for many years. In 2020 April–June, this source underwent the second highest X-ray outburst (second only to the 2016–2017 outburst) and the mechanism of this outburst is still under debate. In this paper, we discuss two scenarios to explore the origin of the outburst: an after-effect of a black hole–disc impact and a tidal disruption event (TDE). We present the weak correlations of the spectral index versus X-ray flux and the hardness ratio (HR) versus the soft X-ray flux during the outburst, and these features are different from the case in the quiescent state. The correlations are compared with those of the 2016–2017 outburst with the highest X-ray flux in monitoring history. Analysis of the outbursts in 2016–2017 and 2020 shows that the expected time of the X-ray outburst, based on the theory of the after-effect of the black hole–disc impact and the estimation of available data, is inconsistent with historical observations. The soft X-ray spectra, the barely temporal evolution of colour, and the evolution of the HR mean that the 2020 outburst shares similar features with the 2016–2017 outburst, which was considered as a possible candidate for a TDE. Additionally, we find that the predictions of full TDEs (t −5/3) and partial TDEs (t −9/4) for the soft X-ray decay light curve are well fitted. Monochromators for synchrotron radiation beamlines typically use perfect crystals for the hard X-ray regime and gratings for soft X-rays. There is an intermediate range, typically 1-3 keV (tender X-rays), which common perfect crystals have difficulties covering and gratings have low efficiency, although some less common crystals with high d-spacing could be suitable. To evaluate the suitability of these crystals for a particular beamline, it is useful to evaluate the crystals' performance using tools such as ray-tracing. However, simulations for double-crystal monochromators are only available for the most used crystals such as Si, Ge or diamond. Here, an upgrade of the SHADOW ray-tracing code and complementary tools in the OASYS suite are presented to simulate high dspacing crystals with arbitrary, and sometimes complex, structures such as beryl, YB66, muscovite, etc. Isotropic and anisotropic temperature factors are also considered. The YB66 crystal with 1936 atomic sites in the unit cell is simulated, and its applicability for tender X-ray monochromators is discussed in the context of new low-emittance storage rings. Free electron LASer in Hamburg is the first free electron laser user facility operating in the vacuum ultraviolet and soft X-ray wavelength range. Many user experiments require knowledge of the spatial and temporal coherence properties of the radiation. In this paper, we present a theoretical analysis of the coherence properties of the radiation for the fundamental and for the higher odd frequency harmonics. We show that temporal and spatial coherence reach their maxima close to the free electron laser (FEL) saturation but may degrade significantly in the post-saturation regime. We also find that the pointing stability of short FEL pulses is limited due to the fact that nonazimuthal FEL eigenmodes are not sufficiently suppressed. The Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X‐ray Free‐Electron Laser (PAL‐XFEL) operates hard X‐ray and soft X‐ray beamlines for conducting scientific experiments providing intense ultrashort X‐ray pulses based on the self‐amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) process. The X‐ray free‐electron laser is characterized by strong pulse‐to‐pulse fluctuations resulting from the SASE process. Therefore, online photon diagnostics are very important for rigorous measurements. The concept of photo‐absorption and emission using solid materials is seldom considered in soft X‐ray beamline diagnostics. Instead, gas monitoring detectors, which utilize the photo‐ionization of noble gas, are employed for monitoring the beam intensity. To track the beam position at the soft X‐ray beamline in addition to those intensity monitors, an X‐ray ionization beam position monitor (XIBPM) has been developed and characterized at the soft X‐ray beamline of PAL‐XFEL. The XIBPM utilizes ionization of either the residual gas in an ultra‐high‐vacuum environment or injected krypton gas, along with a microchannel plate with phosphor. The XIBPM was tested separately for monitoring horizontal and vertical beam positions, confirming the feasibility of tracking relative changes in beam position both on average and down to single‐shot measurements. In this paper, we propose a novel soft origami tripod structure and mechanism capable of multimodal motions based on electrohydraulic actuators. The tripod structure consists of top and bottom plates connected by three origami legs in parallel. The three electrohydraulic actuators are located at the connecting points between the bottom plate and legs. The actuators are independently swelled by the applied voltage and utilized for extending the soft legs from unfolding. A high degree of freedom (DOF) of the tripod is realized by applying the classic origami pattern waterbomb to the legs, which serve as a spherical joint. The soft tripod has linear and tilting motions while the legs are stretched by independently operated actuators. Basically, the three extended legs achieve linear movement of the top plate. When only one leg is straightened, the other legs become asymmetrical and cause the tripod to tilt. The structure exhibits a linear strain of 122.15% and a tilting angle of 22.25°. In addition, we predict the trajectory of the tripod structure via kinematic modeling and analyze the results based on validation. As a result, the soft origami tripod using electrohydraulic actuators is scalable and controllable with the advantages of multimodal motion and light structure. We report for the first time the detection of thermal free–free emission from post-flare loops at 34 GHz in images from the Nobeyama Radioheliograph. We studied eight loops, seven of which were from regions with an extremely strong coronal magnetic field reported by Fedenev et al. Loop emission was observed in a wide range of wavelength bands, up to soft X-rays, confirming their multitemperature structure and was associated with noise storm emission in metric λ. The comparison of the 17 GHz emission with that at 34 GHz, after a calibration correction of the latter, showed that the emission was optically thin at both frequencies. We describe the structure and evolution of the loops and we computed their density, obtaining values for the top of the loops between 1 and 6 × 1010 cm−3, noticeably varying from one loop to another and in the course of the evolution of the same loop system; these values have only a weak dependence on the assumed temperature, 2 × 106 K in our case, as we are in the optically thin regime. Our density values are above those reported from EUV observations, which go up to about 1010 cm−3. This difference could be due to the fact that different emitting regions are sampled in the two domains and/or due to the more accurate diagnostics in the radio range, which do not suffer from inherent uncertainties arising from abundances and non-LTE excitation/ionization equilibria. Although sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) offer promising low‐cost alternatives to lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), several challenges need to be overcome for their widespread adoption. A primary concern is the optimization of carbon anodes. Graphite, vital to the commercial viability of LIBs, has a limited capacity for sodium ions. Numerous alternatives to graphite are explored, particularly focusing on disordered carbons, including hard carbon. However, compared with graphite, most of these materials underperform in LIBs. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism between carbon and sodium ions remains ambiguous owing to the structural diversity of disordered carbon. A straightforward mechanical approach is introduced to enhance the sodium ion storage capacity of graphite, supported by comprehensive analytical techniques. Mechanically activated graphite delivers a notable reversible capacity of 290.5 mAh·g−1 at a current density of 10 mA·g−1. Moreover, it maintains a capacity of 157.7 mAh·g−1 even at a current density of 1 A·g−1, benefiting from the defect‐rich structure achieved by mechanical activation. Soft X‐ray analysis revealed that this defect‐rich carbon employs a sodium‐ion storage mechanism distinct from that of hard carbon. This leads to an unexpected reversible reaction on the solid electrolyte surface. These insights pave the way for innovative design approaches for carbon electrodes in SIB anodes. In nature, coenzyme-independent oxidases have evolved in selective catalysis using isolated substrate-binding pockets. Single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes), an emerging type of non-protein artificial enzymes, are promising to simulate enzyme active centers, but owing to the lack of recognition sites, realizing substrate specificity is a formidable task. Here we report a metal-ligand dual-site SAzyme (Ni-DAB) that exhibited selectivity in uric acid (UA) oxidation. Ni-DAB mimics the dual-site catalytic mechanism of urate oxidase, in which the Ni metal center and the C atom in the ligand serve as the specific UA and O2 binding sites, respectively, characterized by synchrotron soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and isotope labeling. The theoretical calculations reveal the high catalytic specificity is derived from not only the delicate interaction between UA and the Ni center but also the complementary oxygen reduction at the beta C site in the ligand. As a potential application, a Ni-DAB-based biofuel cell using human urine is constructed. This work unlocks an approach of enzyme-like isolated dual sites in boosting the selectivity of non-protein artificial enzymes. Single-atom nanozymes are a type of non-protein artificial enzymes and promising for mimicking enzyme active centers, but lack recognition sites to confer substrate specificity. Here, the authors report on a metal-ligand dual-site single-atom nanozyme (Ni-DAB) that mimics the dual-site catalytic mechanism of urate oxidase and has high selectivity in uric acid (UA) oxidation. We explore the impact of initial state soft gluon radiations on the azimuthal angle asymmetries in photo-production of hard di-jet via coherent diffraction in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions, as well as in electron-proton (ep) and electron-nucleus (eA) collisions. The primary production mechanism is identified as the diffractive production of two hard jets, accompanied by a collinear gluon emission along the beam direction. In contrast, the diffractive exclusive di-jet production, where the initial state radiation is absent, is suppressed due to color transparency. Our analysis shows that azimuthal asymmetries, traditionally attributed to final state gluon emissions, are reduced by the presence of initial state radiations. The sensitivity of azimuthal asymmetries to both initial and final state radiations suggests that they could provide novel insights into the mechanisms of di-jet production in diffractive processes. Pulsar halos (also termed "TeV halos") are a new class of γ -ray sources in the Galaxy, which manifest as extended γ -ray emission around middle-aged pulsars, as discovered around the Geminga pulsar, the Monogem pulsar, and PSR J0622+3749 by the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory and the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory. A consensus has been reached that the teraelectronvolt emission comes from the inverse Compton scattering of escaping electrons/positrons from the pulsar wind nebula of the soft background radiation field, while the particle transport mechanism in the halo is still in dispute. Currently, there are mainly three interpretations: the isotropic, suppressed diffusion model; the isotropic, unsuppressed diffusion model that considers the ballistic propagation of newly injected particles; and the anisotropic diffusion model. While the predicted γ -ray surface brightness profiles of all three models can be more or less consistent with the observations, the implications of the three models for cosmic-ray transport mechanisms and the properties of the interstellar magnetic field are quite different. In this study, we calculate the anticipated X-ray emission of pulsar halos under the three models. We show that the synchrotron radiation of these escaping electrons/positrons can produce a corresponding X-ray halo around the pulsar and that the expected surface brightness profiles are distinct in the three models. We suggest that sensitive X-ray detectors of a large field of view (such as eROSITA and the Einstein Probe) with a reasonably long exposure time are crucial to understanding the formation mechanism of pulsar halos and can serve as a probe of the properties of interstellar turbulence. A fundamental goal of modern-day astrophysics is to understand the connection between supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth and galaxy evolution. Merging galaxies offer one of the most dramatic channels for galaxy evolution known, capable of driving inflows of gas into galactic nuclei, potentially fueling both star formation and central SMBH activity. Dual active galactic nuclei (dual AGNs) in late-stage mergers with nuclear pair separations <10 kpc are thus ideal candidates to study SMBH growth along the merger sequence since they coincide with the most transformative period for galaxies. However, dual AGNs can be extremely difficult to confirm and study. Hard X-ray (>10 keV) studies offer a relatively contamination-free tool for probing the dense obscuring environments predicted to surround the majority of dual AGN in late-stage mergers. To date, only a handful of the brightest and closest systems have been studied at these energies due to the demanding instrumental requirements involved. We demonstrate the unique capabilities of HEX-P to spatially resolve the soft and -- for the first time -- hard X-ray counterparts of closely-separated (~2" -- 5") dual AGNs in the local Universe. By incorporating physically-motivated obscuration models, we reproduce realistic broadband X-ray spectra expected for deeply embedded accreting SMBHs. Hard X-ray spatially resolved observations of dual AGNs -- accessible only to HEX-P -- wiU hence transform our understanding of dual AGN in the nearby Universe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Post-radiation fractures are a significant complication of cancer treatment, often being challenging to manage and impacting patients' quality of life. This study systematically reviews the literature on fractures in irradiated bones, focusing on risk factors, treatment modalities, and prevention strategies. Factors increasing fracture risk include exposure to high doses of radiation of at least 50 Gy, female gender, menopausal age, and periosteal stripping. Additionally further risk factors are the size of the original tumor and osteoporosis. Methods: A search of PubMed yielded 541 articles, with 4 were ultimately included in the review. These retrospective studies focused on patients undergoing Combined Limb-Sparing Surgery and Radiation Therapy for soft tissue sarcoma. Results: Results show post-radiation fractures affect approximately 4% of patients, with the femur being the most frequently affected site. Intramedullary nailing emerges as the gold standard treatment, with prosthetic replacement or megaprostheses used in the metaepiphyseal region and as salvage procedures. Non-union and infection remain formidable complications. Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of prophylactic nailing in fracture prevention and the efficacy of free vascularized fibular flaps to achieve bone union during revision surgeries. Star formation accretion on to the super massive black holes (SMBHs) and feedback processes link the evolution of galaxies with their SMBHs. X-ray observations in the imaging and spectral regime have revealed to be an important tool to study the connection between nuclear activity and circumnuclear star formation in nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN). X-ray spectral diagnostics can lead to disentangle, which is the ionization mechanism in the central kiloparsecs of nearby AGN. In this paper, we investigate, by means of XMM-Newton observations, the nuclear X-ray emission of the changing-look AGN NGC 1566 during its quiescent state. European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) soft X-ray images show an extended arm-like morphology. A detailed analysis of the high-resolution Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) and medium resolution EPIC spectra shows that the material concentrated in the central kiloparsecs region is not in the photoionization-dominated regime while the presence of collisionally ionized plasma is needed to explain the observed spectral features. In the inner region (∼1.5 kpc), the brightness of the collisionally ionized gas is comparable to the brightness of the photoionized gas: the inner region hosts a luminous starburst whose ionized gas shows up bright in the X-rays when the AGN is in quiescence. This paper provides a new analysis of ROSAT observations of the Coma cluster, to determine the amount of soft X-ray radiation in excess of the contribution from the hot intracluster medium (ICM). The re-analysis is made possible by a high-resolution study of the hot ICM with the XMM–Newton and Planck telescopes out to the cluster's virial radius. The analysis confirms the original findings of a strong excess of soft X-ray radiation, which is likely to be of thermal origin. We find quantitative agreement between the detected soft excess and the physical characteristics of warm–hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) filaments seen in hydrodynamical simulations. We conclude that the most plausible explanation for the soft excess is the presence of ∼10 Mpc long filaments at log  T (K) ≃ 6, with a baryon overdensity of ∼300, converging towards the Coma cluster. This interpretation therefore provides support for the identification of the missing low-redshift baryons with WHIM filaments, as predicted by numerical simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present results from radio and X-ray observations of the X-ray transient MAXI J1810−222. The nature of the accretor in this source has not been identified. In this paper, we show results from a quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray monitoring campaign taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory X-ray Telescope (XRT) , and the Swift Burst Alert Telescope. We also analyse the X-ray temporal behaviour using observations from the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer. Results show a seemingly peculiar X-ray spectral evolution of MAXI J1810−222 during this outburst, where the source was initially only detected in the soft X-ray band for the early part of the outburst. Then, ∼200 d after MAXI J1810−222 was first detected the hard X-ray emission increased and the source transitioned to a long-lived (∼1.5 yr) bright, harder X-ray state. After this hard state, MAXI J1810−222 returned back to a softer state, before fading and transitioning again to a harder state and then appearing to follow a more typical outburst decay. From the X-ray spectral and timing properties, and the source's radio behaviour, we argue that the results from this study are most consistent with MAXI J1810−222 being a relatively distant (≳6 kpc) black hole X-ray binary. A sufficiently large distance to source can simply explain the seemingly odd outburst evolution that was observed, where only the brightest portion of the outburst was detectable by the all-sky XRTs. Boron carbide is a prominent material for high-brilliance synchrotron optics as it remains stable up to very high temperatures. The present study shows a significant change taking place at 550 °C in the buried interface region formed between the Cr adhesive layer and the native oxide layer present on the silicon substrate. An in situ annealing study is carried out at the Indus-1 Reflectivity beamline from room temperature to 550°C (100°C steps). The studied sample is a mirror-like boron carbide thin film of 400 A ° thickness deposited with an adhesive layer of 20 A ° Cr on a silicon substrate. The corresponding changes in the film structure are recorded using angle-dependent soft X-ray reflectivity measurements carried out in the region of the boron K-edge after each annealing temperature. Analyses performed using the Parratt recursive formalism reveal that the top boron carbide layer remains intact but interface reactions take place in the buried Cr-SiO2 region. After 300°C the Cr layer diffuses towards the substrate. At higher temperatures of 500°C and 550 °C the Cr reacts with the native oxide layer and tends to form a low-density compound of chromium oxysilicide (CrSiOx). Depth profiling of Si and Cr distributions obtained from secondary ion mass spectroscopy measurements corroborate the layer model obtained from the soft X-ray reflectivity analyses. The newly constructed time-resolved atomic, molecular and optical science instrument (TMO) is configured to take full advantage of both linear accelerators at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the copper accelerator operating at a repetition rate of 120 Hz providing high per-pulse energy as well as the superconducting accelerator operating at a repetition rate of about 1 MHz providing high average intensity. Both accelerators power a soft X-ray freeelectron laser with the new variable-gap undulator section. With this flexible light source, TMO supports many experimental techniques not previously available at LCLS and will have two X-ray beam focus spots in line. Thereby, TMO supports atomic, molecular and optical, strong-field and nonlinear science and will also host a designated new dynamic reaction microscope with a submicrometer X-ray focus spot. The flexible instrument design is optimized for studying ultrafast electronic and molecular phenomena and can take full advantage of the sub-femtosecond soft X-ray pulse generation program. Symbiotic X-ray binaries are systems hosting a neutron star accreting form the wind of a late-type companion. These are rare objects and so far only a handful of them are known. One of the most puzzling aspects of the symbiotic X-ray binaries is the possibility that they contain strongly magnetized neutron stars. These are expected to be evolutionary much younger compared to their evolved companions and could thus be formed through the (yet poorly known) accretion induced collapse of a white dwarf. In this paper, we perform a broad-band X-ray and soft γ-ray spectroscopy of two known symbiotic binaries, Sct X−1 and 4U 1700+24, looking for the presence of cyclotron scattering features that could confirm the presence of strongly magnetized NSs. We exploited available Chandra ,  Swift , and NuSTAR data. We find no evidence of cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSFs) in the case of Sct X−1 but in the case of 4U 1700+24 we suggest the presence of a possible CRSF at ∼16 keV and its first harmonic at ∼31 keV, although we could not exclude alternative spectral models for the broad-band fit. If confirmed by future observations, 4U 1700+24 could be the second symbiotic X-ray binary with a highly magnetized accretor. We also report about our long-term monitoring of the last discovered symbiotic X-ray binary IGR J17329−2731 performed with Swift /XRT. The monitoring revealed that, as predicted, in 2017 this object became a persistent and variable source, showing X-ray flares lasting for a few days and intriguing obscuration events that are interpreted in the context of clumpy wind accretion. Abstract The interlayer plays a crucial role in improving the properties of many extremely important magnetic materials and devices by regulating the magnetic exchange coupling, while it is still not fully understood in a quantitative way. The main obstacle is that there is still no effective way to characterize quantitatively the ferromagnetic exchange coupling (FEC) strength after inserting the interlayer. In this paper, a rationally designed hard/interlayer/soft layered film is used to study the interlayer effects. It is demonstrated that the magnetic properties of nanocomposite magnets can be effectively enhanced through the modification of interface. Here a new concept, using the nucleation field H ns of soft phase as a "detector" to directly and quantitatively characterize/measure the FEC strength across interface and interlayer, is put forward. It is applied to address the dependence of FEC strength on thickness of nonmagnetic Cr and rare earth-rich phase interlayers. The detailed, distinguishing and typical decay behavior and length of FEC strength for these interlayers are successfully resolved for the first time. The new conception and experimental results get also strongly supported by the theoretical calculation. The nature or mechanism of exchange coupling between ferromagnetic grains or layers after adding the nonmagnetic interlayer is identified by using the hard/interlayer/soft layered film as a model system. Our results demonstrate the validity for characterizing/measuring quantitatively the FEC strength across different interlayer materials via strategy established in this work. In this paper, the possibility of using neural networks for fast tomographic reconstructions of tokamak plasma soft X-ray (SXR) emissivity is investigated. Indeed, the radiative cooling of heavy impurities like tungsten could be detrimental for the plasma core performances of ITER, thus developing robust and fast SXR diagnostic tools is a crucial issue to monitor the impurities and to mitigate in real-time their central accumulation. As preliminary work, a database of emissivity phantoms with associated synthetic measurements is used to train the neural network to solve the inversion problem. Numerical experiments are carried out on a low-energy (2.2 kJ) Mather-type Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority-Plasma Focus (EAEA-PF1) to investigate the optimum combination of all electrode system dimensions and gas pressure for maximum argon soft X-ray (SXR) yield, $Y_{\mathrm {SXR}}$ , using Lee Model RADPF5.15. This paper aims to finalize the first step prior to building an automated method of optimization that could be applied when a low-energy dense plasma focus is designed or need to be reconfigured, for this purpose, and to assist further research efforts in this field. The second part of the study deals with the investigation of the role of changing outer electrode radius “b” and the outer to inner radii ratio “c” on plasma focus (PF) parameters such as ion density, pinch duration, and column length and how are these, consequently, related to the maximum SXR yield. It is shown that lower radius ratio values (typically less than 2) are favored over higher ones, for argon SXR yield, and unlike most of the low-energy PF devices that are designed for this purpose. It is also shown that inductance and pinch current are only affected by the dimension of inner electrode radius, while the ion density, pinch duration, and focus volume are also affected by the change of outer electrode radius. The ability to produce ultrashort, high-brightness X-ray pulses is revolutionizing the field of ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy. Free-electron laser (FEL) facilities are driving this revolution, but unique aspects of the FEL process make the required characterization and use of the pulses challenging. In this paper, we describe a number of developments in the generation of ultrashort X-ray FEL pulses, and the concomitant progress in the experimental capabilities necessary for their characterization and use at the Linac Coherent Light Source. This includes the development of sub-femtosecond hard and soft X-ray pulses, along with ultrafast characterization techniques for these pulses. We also describe improved techniques for optical cross-correlation as needed to address the persistent challenge of external optical laser synchronization with these ultrashort X-ray pulses. We present a novel X-ray assembly of functionally related instrument blocks intended to measure solar flare and active region (AR) spectra from within the Russian instrument complex KORTES, to be mounted aboard the International Space Station (ISS). SolpeX consists of three blocks: fast-rotating multiple flat crystal Bragg spectrometer, pin-hole X-ray spectral imager and Bragg polarimeter. This combination of measuring blocks will offer an opportunity to detect/measure possible X-ray polarization in soft X-ray emission lines/continuum and record spectra of solar flares, in particular during their impulsive phases. Polarized Bremsstrahlung and line emission may arise from presence of directed particle beams colliding with denser regions of flares. As a result of evaporation, the X-ray spectral-components are expected to be Doppler shifted, which will also be measured. We present a possibility of reaching higher energy absorption edges of organic materials, beyond the carbon K-edge, in the near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy technique using a compact laser-produced plasma soft X-ray (SXR) source based on a double-stream gas puff target. The source was optimized for emission in the SXR spectral range from 1.5 to 5 nm wavelength using the krypton/helium target. The emission spectrum of the source and the absorption spectrum of the investigated sample were measured simultaneously by means of a grazing incidence spectrometer, equipped with a single, large aperture diffractive element. Based on both spectra, the optical density was computed for the silicon nitride membranes in a transmission mode, to reveal the NEXAFS features near the nitrogen K-edge. Moreover, due to spectral narrowing of the SXR emission by the use of titanium filter, reaching the titanium L-edge was also possible. Multiple SXR pulse data were compared to single SXR pulse (single-shot) data as well as to the numerical simulations. Strongly magnetized isolated neutron stars (NSs) are categorized into two families according, mainly, to their magnetic field strength. The one with a higher magnetic field of 1014–1015 Gauss is called "magnetar," and the other is the X‐ray isolated neutron star (XINS) with 1013 Gauss. Both magnetars and XINSs show thermal emission in X‐rays, whose spectra are different. The soft X‐ray spectrum (below 10 keV) of a magnetar is reproduced with a two‐temperature blackbody (2BB), whereas that of an XINS shows only a single‐temperature blackbody (1BB), and its temperature is even lower than that of magnetars. On the basis of the magnetic field and temperature, it is often speculated that XINSs may be old and cooled magnetars. However, no other strong observational evidence has yet been reported to support the speculation. Here, we report that all the seven known XINSs show high‐temperature emission, which should have a similar origin to that of magnetars. Analyzing all the XMM‐Newton data of the XINSs with the highest statistics ever achieved, we find that their X‐ray spectra are all reproduced with a 2BB model, similar to magnetars, as opposed to the traditional 1BB model. Their emission radii and temperature ratios are also similar to those of magnetars except for two XINSs, which show significantly smaller radii than the others. The remarkable similarity in the X‐ray spectra between XINSs and magnetars suggests that the origins of their emitting regions are also the same. The lower temperature in XINSs can be explained if XINSs are older than magnetars. Therefore, this result is another observational indication that supports the standard hypothesis of classification of highly magnetized NSs. This article is based on our paper Yoneyama et al. The use of soft X-rays near the carbon edge of absorption (270-300 eV) greatly enhances studies in various branches of science. However, the choice of reflecting coatings for mirrors operating in free-electron and X-ray free-electron laser (FEL and XFEL) beamlines in this spectral range is not so evident and experimental justifications of the mirror efficiency are rather limited. In the present paper it is demonstrated experimentally that the reflectivity of B4C- and Ni-coated grazing-incidence mirrors is high enough for their operation in FEL or XFEL beamlines near the carbon K-edge of absorption. The minimal reflectivity of both mirrors proves to exceed 80% near the carbon absorption edge at a grazing angle of 0.6°. An in-depth profile of the chemical elements composing the reflecting coatings is reconstructed based on analysis of a set of reflectivity curves measured versus the grazing angle at different photon energies in the soft X-ray spectral region. In the present study, soft x-ray optical properties of off-stoichiometric boron carbide thin films are investigated, and the structure and chemical composition of the film is analyzed using angle dependent x-ray reflectivity and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. Energy dependent soft x-ray reflectivity measured at a fixed grazing angle of 1.5° is used to determine the optical constants in the boron K edge region by applying the Kramers–Kronig technique. The measured optical constants show near edge fine features corresponding to σ* and π* resonances. The electronic transitions corresponding to σ* resonance cause a 40%–75% increase in the delta value in the above boron K edge region. The π* transitions corresponding to off-stoichiometric nature of the boron carbide are observed in the absorption spectra near ∼192.7 eV. Operando time-resolved soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (TR-SXAS) is an effective method to reveal the photochemical processes of metal complexes in solutions. In this study, we have developed the TR-SXAS measurement system for observing various photochemical reactions in solutions by the combination of laser pump pulses with soft x-ray probe pulses from the synchrotron radiation. For the evaluation of the developed TR-SXAS system, we have measured nitrogen K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) spectra of aqueous iron phenanthroline solutions during a photoinduced spin transition process. The decay process of the high spin state to the low spin state in the iron complex has been obtained from the ligand side by N K-edge XAS, and the time constant is close to that obtained from the central metal side by time-resolved Fe K-edge XAS in the previous studies. We present an initial assessment of using tomography on single‐spacecraft images to reconstruct 3D X‐ray emissions from the Earth's magnetosheath. 3D structures in the Earth's magnetosphere have been studied using superposed epoch techniques with single‐point single‐spacecraft observations. They have yielded great insights, but some studies are observation starved, particularly for infrequent solar wind conditions. Global imaging data have provided more insight about these structures, but are 2D projections of 3D structures. We explore the use of tomographic reconstruction techniques to understand what can be extracted from global images from a single spacecraft. The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer mission, due to launch in 2024 on a 3‐year mission, will carry a soft X‐ray imager which will capture emissions from portions of the magnetosheath and upstream solar wind. We already demonstrated that the 3D shape of the magnetopause and the bow shock can be extracted from such images with suitable assumptions. The next step is to examine whether full 3D reconstructions of the emissions are possible. We explore the limited range of viewing angles, which affect the accuracy of the reconstructions and introduce artifacts in some cases, and the low count‐rates in the images which introduce noise in the reconstructions which must be filtered out. Despite these limitations we show that it is possible to reconstruct some aspects of the magnetosheath global morphology using single‐spacecraft soft X‐ray imaging. EUV light optics are either reflective or diffractive due to the substantial absorption characteristics by almost all materials. Despite great successes in manufacturing integrated circuit chips, reflective EUV optics are still unfriendly to small-to-medium enterprise (SME) because of the enormous costs. Recently, diffractive EUV optics has come to the light in hopes to be able to establish manufacturing nanoscale products and inspecting nanoscale structures. Diffractive zone plates with high resolution in EUV wavelengths are urgently needed. This paper reports our latest success in developing 20 nm resolution zone plates for focusing and imaging in the EUV and soft X-ray regions. It firstly discusses the diffraction efficiency of FZPs tailored for 13.5 nm wavelength to decide the essential height of the zone plate. Then, Monte Carlo simulation method was used to figure out the achievable zone plate parameters by high-resolution electron beam lithography (EBL). Finally, this work systematically explored the viability of nanofabricating top-tier 20 nm resolution hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) zone plates with the duty cycle ratio nearing 1:1 and the aspect ratio approaching 13:1 on 50 nm thick Si 3 N 4 membranes. Short-period multilayer mirrors are used in wavelength-dispersive x-ray fluorescence to extend the wavelength range available with naturally occurring Bragg-crystals. W/Si multilayer mirrors with a period of 2.5 nm are used to reflect and disperse elements in the O-Kα–Al-Kα range. However, the reflectance is far from theoretical due to nanoscale W-Si intermixing and formation of WSix. In this work, B4C diffusion barriers were applied in sputter deposited 2.5 nm W/Si multilayers to inhibit W–Si interaction. A peak reflectance of 45% at 9.7° grazing was measured at a wavelength of 0.834 nm—the highest reported in the literature so far. Diffuse scattering measurements revealed no change in interfacial roughness when applying B4C barriers compared to W/Si. A hybrid grazing incidence x-ray reflectivity and x-ray standing wave fluorescence analysis revealed an increase in W concentration of the absorber layer after the application of B4C barriers. Chemical analysis suggests a partial replacement of W silicide bonds with W carbide/boride bonds from the B4C barrier. The formed WxBy and WxCy instead of WxSiy is hypothesized to increase reflectance at 0.834 nm due to its higher W atomic density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gaussian process tomography (GPT) is a recently developed tomography method based on the Bayesian probability theory [J. Svensson, JET Internal Report EFDA-JET-PR(11)24, 2011 and Li et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 84, 083506 (2013)]. By modeling the soft X-ray (SXR) emissivity field in a poloidal cross section as a Gaussian process, the Bayesian SXR tomography can be carried out in a robust and extremely fast way. Owing to the short execution time of the algorithm, GPT is an important candidate for providing real-time reconstructions with a view to impurity transport and fast magnetohydrodynamic control. In addition, the Bayesian formalism allows quantifying uncertainty on the inferred parameters. In this paper, the GPT technique is validated using a synthetic data set expected from the WEST tokamak, and the results are shown of its application to the reconstruction of SXR emissivity profiles measured on Tore Supra. This paper introduces a novel active snubber cell for soft switching pulse width modulation DC-DC converters. In the proposed converter, the main switch is turned on under zero voltage transition and turned off under zero voltage switching (ZVS). The auxiliary switch is turned on under zero current switching (ZCS) and turned off under zero current transition. The main diode is turned on under ZVS and turned off under ZCS. All of the other semiconductors in the converter are turned on and off with soft switching. There is no extra voltage stress on the semiconductor devices. Besides, the proposed converter has simple structure and ease of control due to common ground. The detailed theoretical analysis of the proposed converter is presented and also verified with both simulation and experimental study at 100 kHz switching frequency and 600 W output power. The linear depolarization ratio (LDR) is a key parameter used in remote sensing to distinguish particle types. The LDR of the soot fractal model is uneasy to match the measured values. In this paper we used three-dimensional (3D) synchrotron soft X-ray tomography (SXT) for the 3D reconstruction of the toluene-burning soot particles and used discrete dipole approximation to calculate optical properties. The obtained results showed the 3D reconstructed soot particles can efficiently reproduce the measured LDR. The results of this study will encourage us to develop a new morphology model, completely different from the traditional fractal model, for bare soot based on 3D reconstruction. Laser–plasma accelerators (LPAs) have great potential to realize a compact X-ray free-electron laser (FEL), which is limited by the beam properties currently. Two-color high-intensity X-ray FEL provides a powerful tool for probing ultrafast dynamic systems. In this paper, we present a simple and feasible method to generate a two-color X-ray FEL pulse based on an LPA beam. In this scheme, time-dependent mismatch along the bunch is generated and manipulated by the designed lattice system, enabling FEL lasing at different wavelength within two undulator sections. The time separation between the two pulses can be precisely adjusted by varying the time-delay chicane. Numerical simulations show that two-color soft X-ray FELs with gigawatt-level peak power and femtosecond duration can be generated, which confirm the validity and feasibility of the scheme. Young solar-type stars are known to be strong X-ray emitters and their X-ray spectra have been widely studied. X-rays from the central star may play a crucial role in the thermodynamics and chemistry of the circumstellar material as well as in the atmospheric evolution of young planets. In this paper, we present model spectra based on spectral parameters derived from the observations of young stars in the Orion nebula cluster from the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP). The spectra are then used to calculate new photoevaporation prescriptions that can be used in disc and planet population synthesis models. Our models clearly show that disc wind mass loss rates are controlled by the stellar luminosity in the soft (⁠|$100\, \mathrm{eV}$| to |$1\, \mathrm{keV}$|⁠) X-ray band. New analytical relations are provided for the mass loss rates and profiles of photoevaporative winds as a function of the luminosity in the soft X-ray band. The agreement between observed and predicted transition disc statistics moderately improved using the new spectra, but the observed population of strongly accreting large cavity discs can still not be reproduced by these models. Furthermore, our models predict a population of non-accreting transition discs that are not observed. This highlights the importance of considering the depletion of millimetre-sized dust grains from the outer disc, which is a likely reason why such discs have not been detected yet. Charge exchange has been recognized as a primary source of soft X-ray emission in many astrophysical outflow environments, including cometary and planetary exospheres impacted by the solar wind. Some models have been set up by using different data collections of charge-exchange cross-sections. However, multiple-electron transfer has not been included in these models. In this paper, we set up a charge-exchange model with the inclusion of double-electron capture (DEC), and make a detailed investigation of this process on X-ray emissions of highly charged carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and neon ions by using available experimental cross-sections. We also study the effect of different n- selective cross-sections on soft X-ray emission by using available experimental n -distributions. This work reveals that DEC enhancement on line intensity is linearly proportional to the ratio of ion abundance in the solar wind. It is more obvious for soft X-rays from carbon ions (C4+) in collision with CO2, and the enhancement on line intensity can be up to 53 per cent with typical ion abundances [ Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE)] in the solar wind. The synthetic spectra with parameters from the Ulysses mission for the solar wind reveal velocity dependence, target dependence, as well as the non-negligible contribution from the DEC. Imaging of actin filaments is crucial due to the integral role that they play in many cellular functions such as intracellular transport, membrane remodelling and cell motility. Visualizing actin filaments has so far relied on fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy/tomography. The former lacks the capacity to capture the overall local ultrastructure, while the latter requires rigorous sample preparation that can lead to potential artefacts, and only delivers relatively small volumes of imaging data at the thinnest areas of a cell. In this work, a correlative approach utilizing in situ super‐resolution fluorescence imaging and cryo X‐ray tomography was used to image bundles of actin filaments deep inside cells under near‐native conditions. In this case, fluorescence 3D imaging localized the actin bundles within the intracellular space, while X‐ray tomograms of the same areas provided detailed views of the local ultrastructure. Using this new approach, actin trails connecting vesicles in the perinuclear area and hotspots of actin presence within and around multivesicular bodies were observed. The flexible distribution network presents a promising architecture to accommodate highly integrated distributed generators and increasing loads in an efficient and cost-effective way. The distribution network is characterised by flexible interconnections and expansions based on soft open points, which enables it to dispatch power flow over the entire system with enhanced controllability and compatibility. Herein, we propose a multi-resource dynamic coordinated planning method of flexible distribution network that allows allocation strategies to be determined over a long-term planning period. Additionally, we establish a probabilistic framework to address source-load uncertainties, which mitigates the security risks of voltage violations and line overloads. A practical distribution network is adopted for flexible upgrading based on soft open points, and its cost benefits are evaluated and compared with that of traditional planning approaches. By adjusting the acceptable violation probability in chance constraints, a trade-off between investment efficiency and operational security can be realised. The interplay of electron-electron and electron-lattice interactions plays an important role in determining exotic properties in strongly correlated electron systems. Of particular interest is quasi-one-dimensional SrNbOx metals, which are perovskite-related layered Carpy-Galy phases. Quasi-one-dimensional metals often exhibit a charge density wave (CDW) accompanied by lattice distortion; however, to date, the presence of a CDW in a quasi-one-dimensional metallic Carpy-Galy phase has not been detected. Here, we report the discovery of two distinct and simultaneous commensurate CDWs in Sr0.95NbO3.37 using resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSXS), namely, an electronic-(001) superlattice below ~ 200 K and an electronic-(002) Bragg peak. We also observe a non-electronic-(002) Bragg peak showing lattice distortion below ~ 150 K. Through the temperature dependence and resonance profile of these CDWs and the lattice distortion, as well as the relationship between the wavelength and charge density, these CDWs are determined to be Wigner crystals and Peierls-like instabilities, respectively. The electron‒electron interaction is strong and dominant even up to 350 K, and upon cooling, it drives the electron–lattice interaction. The correlation length of the electronic-(001) superlattice is surprisingly larger than that of the electronic-(002) Bragg peak, and the superlattice is highly anisotropic. Supported by theoretical calculations, the CDWs are determined by the charge anisotropy and redistribution between the O-2p and Nb-4d orbitals, and the strength of the electronic-(001) superlattice is within the strong coupling limit. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a technique that relies on detecting forces at the nanonewton scale. It involves using a cantilever with a tiny tip at one end. This tip interacts with the short- and long-range forces of material surfaces. These cantilevers are typically manufactured with Si or Si3N4 and synthesized using a lithography technique, which implies a high cost. On the other hand, through simple chemical methods, it is possible to synthesize a magneto-dielectric composite made up of artificial SiO2 opals infiltrated with superparamagnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4. From these materials, it is possible to obtain tipless cantilevers that can be used in AFM analysis. Tipless cantilevers are an alternative tool in nanoscale exploration, offering a versatile approach to surface analysis. Unlike traditional AFM probes, tipless versions eliminate the challenges associated with tip wear, ensuring prolonged stability during measurements. This makes tipless AFM particularly valuable for imaging delicate or soft samples, as it prevents sample damage and provides precise measurements of topography and mechanical and electromechanical properties. This study presents the results of the characterization of known surfaces using magneto-dielectric cantilevers and commercial cantilevers based on Si.
