Elliptical polarized undulators (EPUs) are broadly used in the soft X‐ray energy range. They have the advantage of providing photons with both varied energy and polarization through adjustments to the value of the gap and/or shift magnet arrays in an undulator. Yet these adjustments may create a disturbance on the stability of the electron beam in a storage ring. To correct such a disturbance, it is necessary to establish a feed‐forward table of key nodes in the gap‐shift‐defined two‐dimensional parameter space. Such a table can only be scanned during machine‐study time. For a free‐walking mode, whereby an undulator is allowed to manoeuvre in the whole gap‐shift space, all the key nodes need to be scanned at the expense of a large amount of machine‐study time. This will greatly delay the employment of a full‐polarization capable undulator (especially circularly polarized). By analyzing data‐collecting patterns of user experiments, this paper defines a reduced set of key nodes in gap‐shift parameter space, with the number of key nodes to be scanned for feed‐forwarding scaled down to one‐third of the original; and introduces a new walking mode for EPUs: confined‐walking mode, whereby the undulator is manoeuvred only within the reduced set of key nodes. Such a mode is firstly realized on the EPUs at the DREAMLINE beamline at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF). Under confined‐walking mode, the undulator movements are stable and there is no obvious disturbance to the electron beam with the feed‐forward system in operation. Successful experiments have been carried out using the circularly polarized light obtained via the new walking mode. A microbunching instability (MBI) driven by beam collective effects can deteriorate electron beam quality in advanced x-ray free electron lasers. In this paper, we demonstrate a scheme to suppress microbunching instability by adjusting the compression ratio of two-stage bunch compressor in linear accelerator of the Shanghai soft X-ray Free-Electron Laser User Facility (SXFEL-UF). The calculation of the microbunching instability gain and the mechanism of MBI suppression scheme can be revealed by the theoretical model in this paper. Numerical simulations are presented to verify the analytical results. Furthermore, benefit by the high temporal resolution of transverse deflecting structure (TDS), beam experiments for direct analysis of MBI were carried out at SXFEL-UF. Theoretical calculations as well as simulation and consistent experimental results illustrate that the suppression of microbunching instability can be achieved by increasing the first stage compression ratio of the linac in the SXFEL-UF. The mutual optical intensity (MOI) model is extended to the simulation of the interference pattern produced by extreme ultraviolet lithography with partially coherent light. The partially coherent X‐ray propagation through the BL08U1B beamline at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility is analysed using the MOI model and SRW (Synchrotron Radiation Workshop) method. The fringe intensity at the exposure area is not uniform but has similar envelope lines to Fresnel diffraction, which is explained by the diffraction from the finite grating modelled as a single aperture. By balancing the slit size and photon stop size, the fringe visibility, photon flux and intensity slope can be optimized. Further analysis shows that the effect of pink light on the aerial images is negligible, whereas the third‐harmonic light should be considered to obtain a balance between high fringe visibility and high flux. Two grating interference exposure experiments were performed in the BL08U1B beamline. The aerial image depth showed that the polymethyl methacrylate photoresist depth was determined by the X‐ray coherence properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An online automatic feedback system has been successfully installed and commissioned at the BL08U1A Soft X-ray Spectromicroscopy Beamline of Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, which can monitor the incident X-ray beam in real time by measuring the blade-edge signals of the exit slit and automatically adjust the elliptical cylindrical mirror parameters to achieve beam calibration and maintain the optimal X-ray flux of the sample. This work provides a comprehensive description of the hardware composition, system implementation, feedback logic, function and software design, system optimization and commission, as well as the online experimental results supported by the system. The experimental results demonstrated that the online automatic feedback system is capable of effectively maintaining the optimal X-ray beam flux for X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments. Its success can provide valuable technique assistance for the design, construction and optimization of similar systems at various beamlines in synchrotron sources in the future. A high-resolution cavity-based beam arrival/flight time measurement system has been established at SXFEL (Shanghai soft X-ray free-electron laser facility). During the development of the system, a correlation between the energy jitter and the beam flight time jitter was found which inspires and motivates us to further explore the possibility of using the beam arrival/flight time measurement system to measure the beam energy. On the one hand, beam energy is one of the most fundamental and critical parameters for accelerator facilities. Only precise handling of the beam energy enables precise control of the FEL (free-electron laser) radiation wavelength. On the other hand, there are only a few methods for beam energy measurement. The profile-based beam energy measurement method is commonly used but is interceptive. The BPM-based beam energy measurement scheme is non-interceptive but has a limited dynamic range and requires initial beam position calibration. This paper reports a promising application of a cavity-based high-resolution beam arrival/flight time measurement system: non-intercepting wide-range beam energy measurement. A brief introduction of the method principle and system implementation has been covered in this article. Moreover, a beam-based preliminary test has been performed and the test results show a linear correlation between the beam energy and the beam flight time under the current system configuration. Gd 2 O 2 S:Tb (P43) powder was widely used in soft X-ray detection due to its high light yield. Compared with P43, GAGG:Ce scintillator has high light transmittance, fast decay time and strong radiation resistance. Photonic crystals (PhCs) can be used to enhance the light output of scintillator. In this paper, two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals that consist of square arrays of air holes etched into TiO 2 layer were fabricated on the exit surface of GAGG:Ce scintillator to enhance its light output. The luminescence spectra and the light output of GAGG:Ce scintillator with/without PhCs were measured at the BL08U1A beamline of Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The results showed that the light output of GAGG:Ce scintillator with PhCs can be enhanced by a factor of 1.43 times compared with the reference GAGG:Ce scintillator, 2.35 times compared with YAG:Ce scintillator, 1.24 times compared with Gd 2 O 2 S:Tb scintillation ceramic and 0.76 times compared with P43 powder layer with the mass thickness of about 1.3mg/cm 2 with optical grease coupling. No significant change was observed in luminescence decay time between GAGG:Ce scintillator with and without PhCs. It makes GAGG:Ce scintillator with PhCs a promising material instead of P43 powder and YAG:Ce scintillator in soft X-ray detector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
