The quantitative analysis of sediment sources in a sink is an important scientific topic and challenge in provenance research. The characteristics of heavy minerals, combined with the geochemical constituents of detrital grains, provide a reliable provenance-tracing approach. We developed a mineral identification method to analyze the multiple grain-size fraction of sediments, from which the elemental geochemistry of hornblende was used to compare the characteristics of sediments from the Huaihe River and Huanghe (Yellow) River in eastern China. Elements that were statistically identified as being able to discriminate sediment provenance were employed to perform a quantitative analysis of the sources of sediments of the abandoned Huanghe River. Results reveal that the Huaihe River is characterized by a high amphibole content of >60% and that the Huanghe and abandoned Huanghe rivers have greater abundances of limonite and carbonate minerals compared with those of the Huaihe River. The contents of trace elements and rare earth elements in hornblende show that the sediments of the abandoned Huanghe River are similar to those of the Huanghe River but different from those of the Huaihe River. Furthermore, chemical mass balance was used to calculate the relative contributions of different provenances of sediment from the abandoned Huanghe River, and nine trace elements of hornblende were identified as discriminators of provenance. Approximately 2% of the hornblende in the abandoned Huanghe River is derived from the Huaihe River and 98% from the Huanghe River. Considering the proportion of hornblende in the total sediment, it is inferred that the contribution of Huaihe River sediment to the abandoned Huanghe River is approximately 0.5%. This study shows that mineral analysis using multiple grain-size fractions (within the wide range of 1Φ to 6Φ) with assessment in elemental geochemistry of hornblende can characterize the provenance of fluvial material in coastal zones. Delta evolution in the context of no sediment discharge has become a global concern, and an accretion-to-erosion conversion is occurring in the Yangtze estuary. This conversion could threaten Changjiang subaqueous delta development. Sediment erodibility is an important indicator of subaqueous delta vulnerability. However, the present and future erodibility of the Changjiang subaqueous delta remains unclear. In this study, 37 short cores were collected from the Changjiang subaqueous delta, and the critical shear stress of the sediment was measured using a cohesive strength meter (CSM) and compared with estimates based on an empirical Shields diagram. The sediment erodibility was analyzed by comparing the sediment critical shear stress with the bed shear stress simulated using a numerical model (i.e., FVCOM), and sediment activity was introduced to discuss the geomorphological change in the subaqueous delta. The CSM-derived critical shear stress is significantly higher than that derived from the empirical Shields formula, but it better shows the erodibility of the sediment. The annual surface sediment activity ranges from 5% to 30% based on the CSM, indicating low surface erodibility. Moreover, the critical shear stress in this region increases as water depth increases, but the bed shear stress shows the opposite trend. Therefore, the erodibility of the Changjiang subaqueous delta is lower than that of the shallow area, indicating no accretion-erosion conversion or continued vertical erosion under sediment starvation in the coming decades. Coastal deltaic deposits are the primary locations for sediment storage on Earth, and quantifying their source contributions is a critical prerequisite for delineating S2S patterns in marginal seas. In most cases, quantification for the contribution by fine‐grained sediments (i.e. particle size < 63 μm) is considered to be representative to constrain the overall sediment supply. However, this approach may be inappropriate because large differences exist between the two quantities. Here we propose an approach to solve the problem, which is based on the maximum number of tracers from multiple sediment size fractions incorporating the content of all size fractions of sediment. Using this approach, absolute source contributions during the Holocene are reconstructed that provide a first‐order model for the S2S pattern of the central Jiangsu coast, China. The Huanghe River is the strongest driver for the Holocene sedimentation, with a mean contribution of ~72 ± 6% (1417 × 108 t). The absolute contributions from the Changjiang and offshore areas were of secondary importance, (i.e. ~17 ± 1% (330 × 108 t) and ~11 ± 5% (217 × 108 t), respectively). The results show that a large difference between the relative and absolute source contributions and the assumption that the relative contribution represents the absolute contribution is invalid in a coastal setting. The impact of the Huanghe is mainly based on episodic events, such as the event of 1128–1855 AD. The model also reveals that the offshore sediments are as important as the Changjiang sediments for the central Jiangsu coast during the Holocene. Thus, the model provides both the time series and overall quantities of sediment supply during the formation and evolution of the Holocene tidal flats on the Jiangsu coast. An MIDAS-400 Customised Data Acquisition System was deployed to obtain current velocity and suspended sediment concentration profiles over the intertidal flat at Wanggang, on the Jiangsu coast (China). At the same time, seawater temperature, conductivity and pressure were measured. Using a data sampling rate of 4 Hz, the high-frequency pressure signals in response to water surface fluctuations were recorded and subsequently transformed into wave parameters. The analytical results show that the apparent bed roughness length has a magnitude close to the height of sand ripples, which is much larger than the grain size diameter. The bottom shear stress associated with current-wave interaction is higher than the tidally-induced stress and intensified turbulent mixing and resuspension. Furthermore, several suspended sediment concentration peaks occurred during a tidal cycle, which can be related to strong turbulence near the bed caused by frontal tidal currents and the enhanced resuspension; advection and extreme weather conditions (e. g. storms and strong winds) also played an important role. Finally, large net suspended sediment fluxes were observed to present when the flood or ebb currents prolonged, i.e. the flow became quasi-unidirectional during a tidal cycle. In general, the MIDAS-400 is a suitable tool for high-resolution data collection for the situations of combined current-wave action over intertidal flats; the data obtained can be used to analyze the processes and mechanisms of material transport. A MIDAS-400 customized data acquisition system has been used for the high-resolution sediment dynamic measurements over the Dafeng intertidal flats of northern Jiangsu during 6 tidal cycles from July 3 to July 10, 2003. The bed shear stress and bedload transport rates, in response to wave-current interactions, are calculated, which indicate that wind waves enhance the bottom shear stress and bedload transport rates. At the station for measurements, bedload transport was directed to seaward, with a sediment discharge of 30-150 kg·m-1 per tidal cycle. The surficial sediment samples were collected from a grid with 10 m spatial intervals over a rectangle 2 × 104 m² experimental area, near the MIDAS-400 during the spring tide of July 4, 2003, and the neap tide of July 9, 2003. In addition, leveling survey was undertaken to obtain the detailed topography of the sampling area. Grain-size trend analysis of the sediment samples shows that the bedload transport patterns are complex, mainly controlled by the hydrodynamics and local geomorphology (e.g. tidal creeks) over the intertidal flats. Furthermore, the grain-size trends pattern during the neap tide rather than during the spring tide is consistent with the calculated bedload transport, and the grain-size trend vectors for the spring tide are larger than those for [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pattern of sediment exchange between the Yangtze River Estuary and the southern Yellow Sea constitutes a crucial yet contentious line of scientific inquiry. This conundrum hampers our comprehensive understanding to predict the future morphological evolution of the radial sand ridges and Jiangsu tidal flats. This study investigates various processes, including tides, wind and waves, to identify the dominant factor controlling sediment exchange between the southern Yellow Sea and the Yangtze River Estuary under storm conditions, using a validated numerical model. Our results show that tide is the dominant force controlling hydrodynamics and sediment transport between the two systems. Tidally induced residual currents and sediment fluxes exhibit a consistent northwesterly trajectory, from the Yangtze River Estuary to the southern Yellow Sea. Conversely, the contributions of wind and wave-induced currents under normal wind conditions (Beaufort Scale 3, 3.4 m s−1) adjust net sediment flux by less than 10 and 46–68%, respectively. In particular, the influence of wind and waves on sediment transport varies significantly with wind direction. While southerly or southeasterly winds amplify the tide-induced northwestward sediment transport, northerly or northeasterly winds curtail it. Under strong winter storm conditions, however, the perturbation caused by northerly winds and waves supersedes the influence of tides in controlling sediment transport, leading to a net residual current and sediment flux oriented southeastwards. • Tide is the dominant force controlling residual currents and sediment transport. • Normally, sediment transport from the Yangtze River Estuary to the southern Yellow Sea. • Northern strong winds and waves revert sediment transport southeastward. • Sediment transports in winter storms are more active nearshore than offshore. Marginal seas are major sinks of fluvial sediments. Identifying the sources and quantifying the contributions of different sources are essential to studying the transport and distribution of terrestrial sediments on the shelves of marginal seas. The South Yellow Sea (SYS) to the east of the Asian continent receives sediment discharged by the Huanghe (Yellow) and Changjiang (Yangtze) rivers, and it is a favorable location for studying the provenance of marginal sea deposits. In this study, we tested the geochemistry of amphibole in different grain-size fractions (very fine sand and coarse silt) of the SYS sediments, and compared this geochemistry with those of fractions in the Huanghe River (HH) and the Changjiang River (CJ) to quantify the terrestrial provenance of the sea. The results show that for the very fine sand fraction, Zr, Be, Ga, Ge, Nb, Cd, and Hf in amphibole can be used as indicators to discriminate between the HH and CJ sediments. For the coarse silt fraction, the trace elements of Ba, Zr, Li, Rb, and Hf in amphibole can be used to distinguish the sediment of the two rivers. The mean contribution of the HH sediment to the very fine sand and coarse silt fractions of SYS is 45.0% ± 6.7% and 57.6% ± 5.9%, respectively, compared with 54.8% ± 6.7% and 42.4% ± 5.9% for the CJ, respectively. Provenance analysis of amphibole reveals spatial variation in the supply of terrigenous sediment to different parts of the SYS: the nearshore area of the Shandong Peninsula and the sea areas adjacent to the abandoned Huanghe River (FHH) estuary are supplied mainly by the HH, whereas the South and eastern parts of the SYS are supplied predominantly by the CJ. In the SYS sediment of very fine sand, a line extending from 34°N, 121°E to 35°N, 123°E demarcates the boundary between areas supplied by the HH (north) and the CJ (south), while coarse silt has a longer transport distance and higher mixing degree compared with very fine sand. The definition of the threshold of sediment motion is critical for continental shelf sediment dynamics. The work by A. Shields laid the foundation for this research direction, leading to the well-known Shields curve. Here we review the most widely used threshold curves that have followed from the original Shields curve over the last 80 years, and propose that in terms of physical processes the threshold (critical Shields parameter) is a function of at least six variables, i.e. grain Reynolds number, grain size distribution, sphericity, roundness, particle cohesiveness and the scale effects of turbulence. Identifying these key factors, we paid a special attention to the role of the scale effects of turbulence. Turbulence was thought to be a random process, but the improvement of measurement techniques revealed that it has both temporal and spatial structures: the magnitude of instantaneous velocity fluctuations varies in time and in location, which can cause the deviation between in situ measurements and flume experiments. In coastal and shelf waters, in situ measurements of tidal currents and suspended sediment concentrations have revealed that resuspension takes place even though the bed shear stress is well below the Shields curve. Further process and mechanism studies are required to improve the theoretical framework regarding the turbulence structures and their interplay with sediment threshold. The scientific problems for future studies include the establishment of laboratory experiments, in situ measurements and process-based modelling under different water depths and hydrodynamic conditions to quantify the scale effects of turbulence; the development of new observation techniques for higher resolution and for extreme environments; development of new data processing methods, including big data methods to analyse turbulence structures; and the quantification of the effects of biological contributions and non-particle components on the family of Shields curves. • Measured threshold for initial sediment motion is well below the Shields curve. • The scale effects of turbulence cause the deviation between in situ measurements and flume experiments. • The threshold (critical Shields parameter) is now a function of at least six variables.
