The 1909 Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act resulted in significant duties and taxes on imports of Canadian newsprint and wood pulp, a finished product and a commodity in constant demand in the United States. In response, American newspapers took up the cause of duty-free pulp and paper and positioned themselves in opposition to the "Paper Trust," a cabal of papermakers of which International Paper was chief. While there have been important studies of the history of American newsprint, no historian has yet analyzed the discourse and rhetoric employed by the papers themselves in opposition to the tariff. The current context and changes in the communicational paradigm in the last ten years lead to think we are experiencing a moment of transition that entails the end of mass media, like different studies have concluded. Among them, the most vulnerable product is the printed newspaper, which disappearance generates few doubts. However, immersed in this moment of change, we cannot yet evaluate what means to lose a journalistic model that has prevailed for over two centuries and a half as informational reference. From this perspective, the province of Cuenca, in Castile-La Mancha, one of the two in Spain which today no longer has a printed newspaper, offers us a unique scenario to approach what kind of medium positions as leader in its place. Using a mixed methodology, based on the review of documentary sources and contents analysis, we analyse a case study that aims to collect tendencies regarding proximity media. In this case, the switching from one platform to another has devaluated very relevant journalistic genres, such as the photo news or the editorial, but also some core practices in the journalism, like the editing task on the material that arriving to the editorial offices. In the early twentieth century, American newspapers enjoyed high circulations while presenting readers with diverse and plentiful content. After 1920, radio broadcasting made even more information available for public consumption, giving audience members an abundant range of media choices. During a time of plenty for readers and listeners, companies in the business of media struggled with the opposite problem: scarcity. As the amount of media content proliferated, the practical ability to disseminate it was determined by the access to scarce resources, and this was true for both radio broadcasting and newspaper publishing. In many respects, the history of the American mass media in the early twentieth century might best be told as a tale of two scarcities, one—the electromagnetic spectrum—defined by absolute limits and the other—the newsprint—defined by access to markets for a particular material, the supply of which often fluctuated in availability and price. This paper examines the main physical and mechanical properties of aged and non-aged polymer composites made of a matrix filled with 10 % fiberized or chopped old newspaper oxo-degradable into polypropylene. The impact of the modification of the filler with a polyvinyl acetate water dispersion and with carboxymethyl cellulose on the properties of the extruded flat foil made of composites was studied. Adding a lignocellulose filler worsens the properties of the products obtained, but significantly accelerates the degradation of the composite material. The used filler modifiers improve the examined physical and mechanical properties, but increase the weather resistance of the foil products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article examines the effect of press and paper variables on linting during the offset printing of newsprint. The results of printing take-off angle, ink tack, print coverage, and paper two sidedness on linting in offset printing were investigated with printing trials conducted on a small commercial Heidelberg GTO-52 and a large commercial Man-Roland Uniset press. It reveals that the take-off angle at which the web exits the printing nip have the largest influence on lint, with the lint weight increasing fivefold when the take-off angle was increased from 27° to 153°.
