Using an innovative representation of the weight bound constrained Markowitz's (Portfolio selection. J. Finance, 1952, 7, 77–91) mean-variance model, developed using the support vector data description, a machine learning algorithm introduced by Tax and Duin (Support vector data description. Mach. Learn., 2004, 54, 45–66), we provide an innovative interpretation of the robustness of these bound constraints in terms of robust control theory in the sense of Hansen and Sargent (Robust control and model uncertainty. Am. Econ. Rev., 2001, 91, 60–66). Building on these insights, firstly, we detail the method for quantifying the degree of misspecification in Markowitz's (1952) mean-variance model using its counterpart with weight upper bounds. Additionally, we show that this degree of misspecification is a decreasing piecewise linear function of the bound. Secondly, we empirically investigate two simulation-based methods, inspired by Michaud's (The Markowitz optimization enigma: Is 'optimized' optimal? Financ. Anal. J., 1989, 45, 31–42) resampling technique, for choosing the bound. Thirdly, we compare the robustness of the weight upper bound constrained mean-variance model with that of Goldfarb and Iyengar's (Robust portfolio selection problems. Math. Oper. Based on the semi-active suspension controller of an automobile, the control law can be adjusted based on the control law reorganization idea, and the active fault-tolerant controller of the semi-active suspension is designed to make the fault closed loop system and the fault-free suspension semi-active suspension. Active suspension closed-loop systems have the same closed-loop pole or proximity system performance. Bench test and simulation results show that: the fault suspension under the control of the active fault-tolerant controller lags behind its performance level after some time and can quickly recover to the same performance as the fault-free automotive semi-active suspension level. And the simulation test and bench test results are basically consistent. Based on the concept of control law reorganization to design the active fault-tolerant control strategy of semi-active suspension, it can effectively realize the active fault-tolerant control of the semi-active suspension of the vehicle to improve the suspension control quality and reliability, and optimize the suspension design.

This paper proposes a second-order terminal sliding mode (2TSM) approach to the trajectory tracking of the differential drive mobile robot (DDMR). Within this cascaded control scheme, the 2TSM dynamic controller, at the innermost loop, tracks the robot’s velocity quantities while a kinematic controller, at the outermost loop, regulates the robot’s positions. In this manner, chattering is greatly attenuated, and finite-time convergence is guaranteed by the second-order TSM manifold, which involves higher-order derivatives of the state variables, resulting in an inherently robust as well as fast and better tracking precision. The simulation results demonstrate the merit of the proposed control methods.

We present a proportional–integral–derivative-based controller plus an adaptive slide surface to solve the trajectory tracking control problem for a fully actuated vessel with unknown parameters perturbed by slowly varying external unknown dynamics. The controller design assumes that the vessel moves at low speed and frequency, its physical parameters are unknown, and its state is measurable. The control approach ensures error tracking convergence toward a small vicinity at the origin. We conduct the corresponding stability analysis using the Lyapunov theory and saturation functions. We tested the controller through two numerical experiments—a turning ellipse maneuver and a rest-to-rest maneuver—where the vessel parameters were unknown, and we obtained satisfactory results.

This paper deals with a discrete-time observer-based state feedback control design by taking into consideration bounded parameter uncertainty, actuator faults, and stochastic noise in an inner control loop which is extended in a cascaded manner by outer PI- and P-control loops for velocity and position regulation. The aim of the corresponding subdivision of the quadrotor model is the treatment of the control design in a systematic manner. In the inner loop, linear matrix inequality techniques are employed for the placement of poles into a desired area within the complex z-plane. A robustification of the design towards noise is achieved by optimizing both control and observer gains simultaneously guaranteeing stability in a predefined bounded state domain. This procedure helps to reduce the sensitivity of the inner control loop towards changes induced by the outer one. Finally, a model-based optimization process is employed to tune the parameters of the outer P/PI controllers. To allow for the validation of accurate trajectory tracking, a comparison of the novel approach with the use of a standard extended Kalman filter-based linear-quadratic regulator synthesis is presented to demonstrate the superiority of the new design.

This paper presents a nonlinear robust H-infinity control strategy for improving trajectory following performance of autonomous ground electric vehicles (AGEV) with active front steering system. Since vehicle trajectory dynamics inherently influenced by various driving maneuvers and road conditions, the main objective is to deal with the trajectory following control challenges of parametric uncertainties, system nonlinearities, and external disturbance. The AGEV system dynamics and its uncertain vehicle trajectory following system are first modeled and constructed, in which parameter uncertainties related to the physical limits of tire are considered and handled, then the control-oriented vehicle trajectory following augmented system with dynamic error is developed. The resulting nonlinear robust H-infinity state-feedback controller (NHC) of vehicle trajectory-following system is finally designed by H-infinity performance index and nonlinear compensation under AGEV system requirements, and solved utilizing a set of linear matrix inequalities derived from quadratic H-infinity performance and Lyapunov stability. Simulations for double lane change and serpentine scenes are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller with a high-fidelity, CarSim®, full-vehicle model. It is found from the results that the proposed NHC provides improved vehicle trajectory following performance compared with the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller and robust H-infinity state-feedback controller (RHC).

This work presents a finite-time robust path-following control scheme for perturbed autonomous ground vehicles. Specifically, a novel self-tuning nonsingular fast-terminal sliding manifold that further enhances the convergence rate and tracking accuracy is proposed. Then, uncertain dynamics and external disturbances are estimated by a high-gain disturbance observer to compensate for the designed control input. Successively, a super-twisting algorithm is incorporated into the final control law, significantly mitigating the chattering phenomenon of both the input control signal and the output trajectory. Furthermore, the global finite-time convergence and stability of the whole proposed control algorithm are proven by the Lyapunov theory. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed method is validated with comparisons in a numerical example. It obtains high control performance, reduced chattering, fast convergence rate, singularity avoidance, and robustness against uncertainties.

We address the problems of computing operator norms of matrices induced by given norms on the argument and the image space. It is known that aside of a fistful of “solvable cases”, most notably, the case when both given norms are Euclidean, computing operator norm of a matrix is NP-hard. We specify rather general families of norms on the argument and the images space (“ellitopic” and “co-ellitopic”, respectively) allowing for reasonably tight computationally efficient upper-bounding of the associated operator norms. We extend these results to bounding “robust operator norm of uncertain matrix with box uncertainty”, that is, the maximum of operator norms of matrices representable as a linear combination, with coefficients of magnitude $\le 1$, of a collection of given matrices. Finally, we consider some applications of norm bounding, in particular, (1) computationally efficient synthesis of affine non-anticipative finite-horizon control of discrete time linear dynamical systems under bounds on the peak-to-peak gains, (2) signal recovery with uncertainties in sensing matrix, and (3) identification of parameters of time invariant discrete time linear dynamical systems via noisy observations of states and inputs on a given time horizon, in the case of “uncertain-but-bounded” noise varying in a box.

One of the most critical problems in all practical systems is the presence of uncertainties, internal and external disturbances, as well as disturbing noise, which makes the control of the system a challenging task. Another challenge with the physical systems is the possibility of cyber-attacks that the system’s cyber security against them is a critical issue. The systems related to oil and gas industries may also be subjected to cyber-attacks. The subsets of these industries can be mentioned to the oil and gas transmission industry, where ships have a critical role. This paper uses the Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) method to design a robust controller for the ship course system, aiming towards desired trajectory tracking. The proposed controller is robust against all uncertainties, internal and external disturbances, noise, and various possible Deception, Stealth, and Denial-of-Service (DOS) attacks. The robust controller for the ship system is designed using the QFT method and the QFTCT toolbox in MATLAB software. Numerical simulations are performed in MATLAB/Simulink for two case studies with disturbances and attacks involving intermittent sinusoidal and random behavior to demonstrate the proposed controller.

Although sliding mode control (SMC) provides powerful control performance, it exhibits chattering phenomena that can lead to operational issues in quadrotor systems when certain thresholds are reached. To address this limitation, this study introduces second-order sliding mode control (SOSMC), which significantly reduces chattering. Furthermore, a modified version of the SOSMC, called advanced second-order sliding mode control (ASOSMC), is proposed by incorporating an additional term to enhance its control capabilities. The ASOSMC exhibits a stability higher than that of traditional SOSMC during quadrotor flight. We established the stability of the ASOSMC system using a more powerful strict Lyapunov stability analysis instead of the conventional Lyapunov stability employed in SMC. This paper presents the design and performance evaluation of the ASOSMC via simulation and compares it with those of conventional SMC (CSMC) and SOSMC. The simulation results confirm that the ASOSMC offers superior control performance in quadrotor systems.

This paper focuses on fractional-order modeling and the design of a robust speed controller for a nonlinear system. An induction motor (IM), widely used in Electrical Vehicles (EVs), is preferred in this study as a well-known nonlinear system. The major challenge in designing a robust speed controller for IM is the insufficiency of the machine model due to inherent machine dynamics. Fractional calculus is employed to model the IM using the small-signal method, accounting for model uncertainties. In this context, experimental data is approximated using a fractional-order small-signal transfer function. Consequently, a mixed sensitivity problem is formulated with fractional-order weighting functions. The primary advantage of these weighting functions is their greater flexibility in solving the mixed sensitivity problem by involving more coefficients. Hereby, three robust speed controllers are designed using the PID toolkit of the Matlab program and solving the H∞ mixed sensitivity problem, respectively. The novelty and contribution of the proposed method lie in maintaining the closed-loop response within a secure margin determined by fractional weighting functions while addressing the controller design. After evaluating the robust speed controllers with Bode diagrams, it is proven that all the designed controllers meet the desired nominal performance and robustness criteria. Subsequently, real-time implementations of the designed controllers are performed using the dsPIC microcontroller unit. Experimental results confirm that the designed H∞-based fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) controller performs well in terms of tracking dynamics, exhibits robustness against load disturbances, and effectively suppresses sensor noise compared to the robust PID and fixed-structured H∞ controller.

A mechanical ventilator is an important medical equipment that assists patients who have breathing difficulties. In recent times a huge percentage of COVID-19 infected patients suffered from respiratory system failure. In order to ensure the abundant availability of mechanical ventilators during COVID-19 pandemic, most of the manufacturers around the globe utilized open source designs. Patients safety is of utmost importance while using mechanical ventilators for assisting them in breathing. Closed loop feedback control system plays vital role in ensuring the stability and reliability of dynamical systems such as mechanical ventilators. Ideal characteristics of mechanical ventilators include safety of patients, reliability, quick and smooth air pressure buildup and release.Unfortunately most of the open source designs and mechanical ventilator units with classical control loops cannot achieve the above mentioned ideal characteristics under system uncertainties. This article proposes a cascaded approach to formulate robust control system for regulating the states of ventilator unit using blower model reduction techniques. Model reduction allows to cascade the blower dynamics in the main controller design for airway pressure. The proposed controller is derived based on both integer and non integer calculus and the stability of the closed loop is ensured using Lyapunov theorems. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is demonstrated using extensive numerical simulations.

A class of controlled objects is considered, the dynamics of which are determined by a vector system of ordinary differential equations with a partially known right-hand side. It is presumed that the state variables and their velocities can be measured. Designing a robust tracking controller under some constraints to admissible state variables is the research goal. This construction, which extends the results for the average subgradient technique (ASG), and is an update of the subgradient descent technique (SDM) and integral sliding mode (ISM) approach, is realized by using the Legendre–Fenchel transform. A two-link robot manipulator with three revolute joints, powered by individual PMDC motors, is presented as an illustrative example of the suggested approach implementation.

Type I diabetes mellitus is a serious autoimmune condition impacting a large population around the world that need a daily infusion of insulin substitutes to regulate blood glucose levels within healthy limits. The purpose of the study was to design a robust μ-controller based on an uncertain linear-time invariant (LTI) representation of the Hovorka model for glucose–insulin metabolism. The model set was obtained using linearization around an equilibrium point and adding parametric uncertainty to account for the time delay variation between plasma glucose concentration and its subcutaneous measurement. As a result, the robust stability and performance of the closed loop were proved using the structured singular value μ. The performance of the designed controller was also checked with a numerical simulation in connection with the nonlinear model.

Robotic systems have experienced exponential growth in their utilization for manufacturing applications over recent decades. Control systems responsible for executing desired robot motion planning face increasingly stringent performance requirements. These demands encompass high precision, efficiency, stability, robustness, ease of use, and simplicity of the user interface. Furthermore, diverse modern manufacturing applications primarily employ robotic systems within disturbed operating scenarios. This paper presents a novel neural motion-tracking control scheme for mobile manipulation robotic systems. Dynamic position output error feedback and B–Spline artificial neural networks are integrated in the design process of the introduced adaptive robust control strategy to perform efficient and robust tracking of motion-planning trajectories in robotic systems. Integration of artificial neural networks demonstrates performance improvements in the control scheme while effectively addressing common issues encountered in manufacturing environments. Parametric uncertainty, unmodeled dynamics, and unknown disturbance torque terms represent some adverse influences to be compensated for by the robust control scheme. Several case studies prove the robustness of the adaptive neural control scheme in highly coupled nonlinear six-degree-of-freedom mobile manipulation robotic systems. Case studies provide valuable insights and validate the efficacy of the proposed adaptive multivariable control scheme in manufacturing applications.

This paper addresses the fixed-time stability problem of chaotic systems with internal uncertainties and external disturbances. To this end, new sliding-mode surfaces are introduced to design fixed-time controllers for the stabilization of perturbed chaotic systems. First, the required conditions for deriving fixed-time stability are determined. Then, using the obtained stability theorems and sliding mode techniques, the controllers are synthesized. The proposed controller enables the convergence of the trajectories of the chaotic system to the origin in finite time, independently of the initial conditions. The performance of the proposed approach is assessed using a simulation study of a PMSM system and the Matouk system. Among the advantages of the proposed controller are its robustness to external disturbances and the boundedness of the settling time to a constant value for any initial condition.

A rigorous study on optimized robust control is presented for non-preview (nulling-type) high-speed tilting rail vehicles. The scheme utilizes sensors on the vehicle’s body, contrary to that of preview tilt (which uses prior rail track information). Tilt with preview is the industrial norm nowadays but is a complex scheme (both in terms of inter-vehicle signal connections and when it comes to straightforward fault detection). Non-preview tilt is simple (as it essentially involves an SISO control structure) and more effective in terms of (the localization of) failure detection. However, the non-preview tilt scheme suffers from performance limitations due to non-minimum-phase zeros in the design model (due to the compound effect of the suspension dynamic interaction and sensor combination used for feedback control) and presents a challenging control design problem. We proposed an optimized robust control design offering a highly improved non-preview tilt performance via a twofold model representation, i.e., (i) using the non-minimum phase design model and (ii) proposing a factorized design model version with the non-minimum phase characteristics treated as uncertainty. The impact of the designed controllers on tilt performance deterministic (curving acceleration response) and stochastic (ride quality) trade-off was methodically investigated. Nonlinear optimization was employed to facilitate fine weight selection given the importance of the ride quality as a bounded constraint in the design process.

In this work, several innovative robust neuroadaptive control algorithms are integrated via the command filtered backstepping approach for a class of mismatched uncertain nonlinear systems. They utilize neural network adaptive control to achieve an enhanced model compensation effect. In addition, different robust terms with a positive time-varying integral expression are synthesized for each of the algorithms to address external disturbances. Each of the synthesized control algorithms has a continuous control input and cannot only remove the adverse effects of the “explosion of complexity” inherent in the traditional backstepping technology but also produce an asymptotic tracking result for the closed-loop system via strict theoretical analysis. Comparative simulation verifications are implemented to check the feasibility and practicability of the presented controllers.

In this paper, model reference output feedback tracking control of an aircraft subject to additive, uncertain, nonlinear disturbances is considered. In order to present the design steps in a clear fashion: first, the aircraft dynamics is temporarily assumed as known with all the states of the system available. Then a feedback linearizing controller minimizing a performance index while only requiring the output measurements of the system is proposed. As the aircraft dynamics is uncertain and only the output is available, the proposed controller makes use of a novel uncertainty estimator. The stability of the closed loop system and global asymptotic tracking of the proposed method are ensured via Lyapunov based arguments, asymptotic convergence of the controller to an optimal controller is also established. Numerical simulations are presented in order to demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the proposed control strategy.

Whenever additional states of a plant can be measured, closing nested feedback loops can be exploited in a variety of ways. The goal here is to reduce the bandwidth of feedback controllers and thus reduce the amplification of sensor noise that can otherwise spoil the expected performance when the actuator saturates. This can be particularly relevant for demanding tracking specifications and large plant uncertainties. In this context, the current work proposes a novel model-matching control architecture with a feedforward controller and two feedback controllers, which is accompanied by a new robust design method in the frequency domain of Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT). The use of a feedforward controller reduces the amount of feedback to the minimum necessary to constrain the spread of the tracking error responses as specified. Furthermore, this amount of feedback is quantitatively distributed along the frequency between the inner and outer loops to reduce the total sensor noise at the control input as much as possible. A theoretical example illustrates the method and highlights the advantages of the new architecture over two other previously feasible QFT solutions: one with double feedback and another with single feedback plus feedforward. The importance of choosing the correct switching frequency between loops is also demonstrated. Finally, the angle of rotation of a commercial servo motor is successfully controlled using the motor speed as an internal measure.

Abstract This paper deals with the finite time stability and control for a class of uncertain variable fractional order nonlinear systems. The variable fractional Lyapunov direct method is developed to provide the basis for the stability proof of the system considered. The sliding mode control method is applied for robust control of uncertain variable fractional order systems; furthermore, the chattering phenomenon is avoided. And the finite time stability of the systems under control law is proved based on the proposed stability criterion. Finally, numerical simulations are proposed and the efficiency of the controller is verified.

A Wearable Robotic Knee (WRK) is a mobile device designed to assist disabled individuals in moving freely in undefined environments without external support. An advanced controller is required to track the output trajectory of a WRK device in order to resolve uncertainties that are caused by modeling errors and external disturbances. During the performance of a task, disturbances are caused by changes in the external load and dynamic work conditions, such as by holding weights while performing the task. The aim of this study is to address these issues and enhance the performance of the output trajectory tracking goal using an adaptive robust controller based on the Radial Basis Function (RBF) Neural Network (NN) system and Hamilton–Jacobi Inequality (HJI) approach. WRK dynamics are established using the Lagrange approach at the outset of the analysis. Afterwards, the L2 gain technique is applied to enhance the control motion solutions and provide the main features of the designed WRK control systems. To prove the stability of the controlled system, the HJI approach is investigated next using optimization techniques. The synthesized RBF NN algorithm supports the easy implementation of the adaptive controller, as well as ensuring the stability of the WRK system. An analysis of the numerical simulation results is performed in order to demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed tracking control algorithm. The results showed the ability of the suggested controller of this study to find a solution to uncertainties.

The problem of robust stabilisation for a class of uncertain dynamical systems with multiple delayed state perturbations is considered. In this paper, the upper bound of the nonlinearity and uncertainty, including delayed states, is assumed to be a linear function of some parameters which are still assumed to be unknown and an improved adaptation law with σ − modification is proposed to estimate these unknown gains. Moreover, by making use of the updated values of these unknown bounds, we propose a memoryless state feedback controller for such a class of uncertain time-delay systems. Based on Lyapunov stability theory and Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, it is shown that the closed-loop dynamical system resulting from the proposed adaptive robust control schemes in the presence of multiple delayed state perturbations is globally uniformly practically exponentially stable. This paper proposes a method for robust tracking control synthesis of dual-active-bridge (DAB) DC–DC converters with parameter uncertainties and input saturation. In the proposed method, the nonlinear function of the phase shift ratio is expressed as a control input, and the phase shift ratio is determined by the one-to-one relationship with the control input. Especially, the proposed method is developed with consideration of the input saturation phenomenon that occurs physically in the phase shift ratio of DAB DC–DC converters. Furthermore, based on the proposed method, a set of exponential constrained stabilization conditions for DAB DC–DC converter systems with parameter uncertainties is provided to ensure a fast convergence rate. Finally, to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method, various simulation results are provided and compared with the well-known improved model phase shift control (IMPSC) and load current feedforward (LCFF) control methods.

The main contribution of this paper is the verification of a new train control system applied to the drive with a.c. motors that is energy near optimal with respect to electrical and mechanical energy minimization. All simulations are related to the one traction motor yielding its best exploitation. Load torque treated as a state variable consists of constant, linear, and quadratic components as a function of rotor speed. The required performance of the energy-saving control is rendered straightforward using precomputed energy optimal state variables or a prediction of losses for a symmetrical trapezoidal speed profile as the second alternative. An energy-saving reference position generator provides the state variables, which are faithfully followed by a feedback control based on field orientation, which is completed with a matched zero dynamic lag pre-compensator yielding prescribed closed-loop dynamics. Simulation results mutually compared confirm the capability of an overall drive control system to follow generated state variables for two different service conditions and the possibility of energy savings.

The important practical problem of robust synchronization in distance and orientation for a class of differential-drive mobile robots is tackled in this work as an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) problem. To solve it, a kinematic model of the governed system is first developed based on the distance and formation angle between the agents. Then, a special high-order extended state observer is designed to collectively estimate the perturbations (formed by longitudinal and lateral slipping parameters) that affect the kinematic model. Finally, a custom error-based ADRC approach is designed and applied assuming that the distance and orientation between the agents are the only available measurements. The proposed control strategy does not need time-derivatives of the reference trajectory, which increases the practical appeal of the proposed solution. The experimental results, obtained in laboratory conditions with a set of differential-drive mobile robots operating in a leader–follower configuration, show the effectiveness of the proposed governing scheme in terms of trajectory tracking and disturbance rejection.

This paper presents an adaptive control scheme to face the challenge of rejecting input and output disturbances. The research is put on a layer of the design and start-up of chemical plants. The emphasis is on handling disturbances appearing in a narrow band of frequencies, which illustrates standard forms of disturbances in the alluded kind of systems. The controller is made up of a central RS structure that stabilizes the closed-loop plant. A second layer boosts the control law performance by adding the Youla–Kucera (YK) filter or Q parametrization and taking advantage of the internal model principle (IMP). This practice aids in modeling unknown disturbances with online control adjustment. We probe the resultant compensator for three non-isothermal continuous stirred tank reactors connected in series. The plant should conduct a first-order exothermic reaction consuming reactant A, while an isothermal operation stays and the outlet concentration is close to its nominal value. The primary concerns are open-loop instability and steady-state multiplicity in the plant’s first unit. The control objective is to reject input and output disturbances in a band of frequencies of 0.0002Hz to 0.007Hz, whether there are variants or not in time. We test the controller with input signals depicting both variations in the auxiliary services and abrupt changes. We then compare the executions of the resultant control law with a model-based predictive control (MPC). We find comparable responses to multiple disturbances. However, the adaptive control offers an effortless control input. We also conclude that the adaptive controller responds well to reference changes, while the MPC fails due to input constraints.

Fuzzy theory is widely studied and applied. This article introduces an adaptive control scheme for a class of non-linear systems with Markov jump switching. The introduced scheme supposes that the system is submitted to external disturbances under imperfect premise matching. By using discrete-time Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy models, a sliding mode observer-based control scheme is utilized to estimate unmeasured states of the system. We build two fuzzy switching manifolds for the disturbance and sliding mode observer systems. Then, a linear matrix inequality-based criterion is developed using slack matrices. This criterion proves that the sliding mode dynamics are robustly admissible under an H-infinity performance often used in control theory. Hence, new adaptive sliding mode controllers are synthesized for the disturbance and sliding mode observer systems. This allows the reachability of pre-designed sliding surfaces to be guaranteed. Finally, experimental numerical illustrations on a bio-economic system and a tunnel diode circuit are presented to show potential applications, as well as validating the effectiveness of the scheme proposed in the present investigation.

The linear parameter-varying (LPV) models have broad applications in advanced mathematics and modern control systems. This paper introduces a new method for controlling the LPV systems. This method includes the gain-scheduled state-feedback technique and a fuzzy system to calculate the state-feedback gain. The main goal of the control system is to stabilize the system and bring its states to equilibrium points. Linear matrix inequalities calculate feedback gains to stabilize the system. On the other hand, a fuzzy control system also produces a combined signal with the primary controller signal to speed up this operation. Lyapunov’s theory is used to guarantee the control system’s stability. Finally, to evaluate the performance of the proposed control system, the inverted pendulum has been investigated as a case study. The results show that the proposed method has good efficiency and performance.

In this paper, we propose a nonlinear state feedback controller based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) for a class of nonlinear systems with parametric uncertainties and external disturbances. The primary goals of the proposed controller are to guarantee system stability and performance in the presence of system uncertainties and time-dependent disturbances. To meet the specified objectives, the LMI form is calculated as a hierarchical control structure. Using the Lyapunov stability function, the asymptotic stability of the nominal system obtained from the nonlinear state feedback is proven, and the LMI condition is attained. After applying the nonlinear state feedback controller, asymptotic stability conditions for the nominal system are constructed using the Lyapunov function, and the nonlinear state-feedback control mechanism is determined accordingly. Considering the external disturbance as input, the terms of the state matrices are substituted in the obtained LMI, and the LMI condition for a nominal system is achieved in the presence of disturbances. The asymptotic stability condition of the uncertain system in the presence of external disturbances is determined by adding uncertainties to the system. The proposed approach yields a simple control mechanism representing an independent of system order. The performance of the proposed approach was assessed using a simulation study of a ball and beam system.

This investigation is concerned with robust analysis and control of uncertain nonlinear systems with parametric uncertainties. In contrast to the methodologies from the field of linear parameter varying systems, which employ convex structures of the state space representation in order to perform analysis and design, the proposed approach makes use of a polytopic form of a generalisation of the characteristic polynomial, which proves to outperform former results on the subject. Moreover, the derived conditions have the advantage of being cast as linear matrix inequalities under mild assumptions.

In this work, a controller is developed for a continuous bioreactor with an unknown reaction rate term, subject to input saturation. The substrate concentration and the dilution rate are chosen as output and input, respectively. The controller formulation and the stability analysis are performed by the theory of dead zone Lyapunov functions, Lyapunov stability, and model reference adaptive control. As the main results, the dynamics of the Lyapunov function is determined separately for saturation and non-saturation events, and then a unified expression is deduced. In addition, the asymptotic convergence of the tracking error and boundedness of updated parameters are determined for the whole closed loop regime encompassing saturation and non-saturation events, and also for input saturation events, as a function of the terms and parameters of the reference and system models. The main contributions over closely related control designs, are (i) the effect of input constraint limits and desired output on the convergence of the tracking error during input saturation events are determined, considering settling behavior of the desired output with a steep section; (ii) the upper limit of the input constraint that guarantees output convergence during input saturation events is determined as function of the model terms, but independently of the time derivative of the desired output and its limit; (iii) a new dead zone Lyapunov function is proposed which allows proving asymptotic convergence of the tracking error during input saturation events in the presence of a fast variation in the desired output. Finally, the effectiveness and advantages of the developed controller are illustrated by simulation.

In this work, a new robust controller is designed for a second-order plant model, considering asymmetric output constraints. The tracking error convergence and output constraint are achieved by using a control law whose output feedback term is user-defined and bounded: it takes on large but finite and user-defined values for tracking error values equal to or higher than the constraint boundary, and it comprises a previously known user-defined function for tracking error values far from the constraint boundary. This is a significant contribution that remedies two important limitations of common output constraint control designs: the infinite control effort for tracking error equal to or higher than the constraint boundary, and the impossibility of using previously known user-defined functions in the output feedback function for tracking error values far from the constraint boundary. As another contribution, the control design is based on the dead-zone Lyapunov function, which facilitates the achievement of convergence to a compact set with user-defined size, avoidance of discontinuous signals in the controller, and robustness to model uncertainty or disturbances. The proposed output feedback term consists of the product between two functions of the tracking error, an increasing function and a sigmoid function, whose exact expressions are user-defined. Finally, the effectiveness of the developed controller is illustrated by the simulation of substrate concentration tracking in a continuous flow stirred bioreactor.

In order to deal with strong nonlinearity and external interference in the braking process, this paper proposes a robust self-learning PID algorithm based on particle swarm optimization, which does not depend on a precise mathematical model of the controlled object. The self-learning function is used to adapt to the diversity of the runway road surface friction, the particle swarm algorithm is used to optimize the rate of self-learning, and robust control is used to deal with the modeling uncertainty and external disturbance of the system. The convergence of the control strategy is proved by theoretical analysis and simulation experiments. The superiority and accuracy of the method are verified by NASA ground test results. The simulation results shows that the adverse effect of the external disturbance is suppressed, and the ideal trajectory is tracked.

Abstract This paper studies the robust adaptive control of fractional-order chaotic systems with system uncertainties and bounded external disturbances. Based on a proposed lemma, quadratic Lyapunov functions are used in the stability analysis and fractional-order adaptation laws are designed to update the controller parameters. By employing the fractional-order expansion of classical Lyapunov stability method, a robust controller is designed for fractional-order chaotic systems. The system states asymptotically converge to the origin and all signals in the closed-loop system remain bounded. A counterexample is constructed to show that the fractional-order derivative of a function is less than zero does not mean that the function monotonically decreases (this property appears in many references). Finally, simulation results are presented to confirm our theoretical results.

In this study, an intelligent control scheme is developed for induction motors (IMs). The dynamics of IMs are unknown and are perturbed by the variation of rotor resistance and load changes. The control system has two stages. In the identification stage, the group method of data-handling (GMDH) neural network (NN) was designed for online modeling of the IM. In the control stage, the GMDH-NN was applied to compensate for the impacts of disturbances and uncertainties. The stability is shown by the Lyapunov approach. Simulations demonstrated the good accuracy of the suggested new control approach under disturbances and unknown dynamics.

In this brief, we mainly concentrate on the robust synchronization of boolean control networks (BCNs) under event-triggered control (ETC). Different from the previous designed event-triggered controller for BCNs, the proposed event-triggered scheme (ETS) ensures the control input is not updated over a certain period of time. The robust synchronization problem in this brief is firstly converted into the robust set stabilization problem. Then, an optimal algorithm which realizes the minimum of the event-triggered number is proposed to design state feedback controllers for robust synchronization of BCNs. In this paper, we propose a direct method for the synthesis of robust systems operating under parametric uncertainty of the control plant model. The developed robust control procedures are based on the assumption that the structural properties of the nominal system are conservated over the entire range of parameter changes. The invariant-to-parametric-uncertainties transformation of the initial model to a regular form makes it possible to use the concept of super-stable systems for the synthesis of a stabilizing feedback. It is essential that the synthesis of super-stable systems is carried out not on the basis of assigning eigenvalues to the matrix of the close-loop system, but in terms of its elements. The proposed approach is applicable to a wide class of linear systems with parametric uncertainties and provides a given degree of stability.

Robust finite-time control algorithms for satellite attitude maneuvers are proposed in this paper. The standard sliding mode is modified, hence the inherent robustness could be maintained, and this fixed sliding mode is modified to dynamic, therefore the finite-time stability could be achieved. First, the finite -time sliding mode based on attitude quaternion is proposed and the loose finite-time stability is achieved by enlarging the sliding mode parameter. In order to get the strict finite-time stability, a sliding mode based on the Euler axis is then given. The fixed norm property of the Euler axis is used, and a sliding mode parameter without singularity issue is achieved. System performance near the equilibrium point is largely improved by the proposed sliding modes. The singularity issue of finite-time control is solved by the property of rotation around a fixed axis. System finite-time stability and robustness are analyzed by the Lyapunov method. The superiority of proposed controllers and system robustness to some typical perturbations such as disturbance torque, model uncertainty and actuator error are demonstrated by simulation results.

New sufficient conditions for delay-independent and delay-dependent robust stability of uncertain fuzzy time-delay systems based on uncertain fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) models are presented by using the properties of matrix and norm measurements. Further sufficient conditions are formulated, in terms of the linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) of robust stabilization, and are developed via the technique of parallel distributed compensation (PDC), and then the simplification of the conditions for the controller design of uncertain fuzzy time-delay systems. The proposed methods are simple and effective. Some examples below are presented to illustrate our results.

μ-synthesis is a NP-hard optimization problem based on the generalized Robust Control framework which manages to find a controller which fulfills both robust stability and robust performance. In order to solve such problems, nonsmooth optimization techniques are employed to find nearly-optimal parameters values. However, the free parameters available for tuning must be involved only in classical arithmetic operations, which leads to a problem for the fractional-order operator or for its integer-order approximation, exponential operations being involved. The main goal of the current article consists of presenting a possibility to integrate a fixed-structure multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FO-PID) controller in the μ-synthesis optimization problem. The solution consists in a possibility to find a set of tunable parameters isomorphic with the fractional-order such that the coefficients involved in the approximation of the fractional element, along with the formulation of a fixed-structure mixed-sensitivity loop shaping μ-synthesis control problem. The proposed design procedure is applied to a twin rotor aerodynamic system (TRAS) using both MATLAB numerical simulation and practical experiments on laboratory scale equipment. Moreover, a comparison with the unstructured μ-synthesis is performed, highlighting the advantages of the proposed solution: simpler form and guaranteed robust stability and performance.

DC circuit breaker (DCCB) systems with a DC reactor in series are normally equipped in the voltage-sourced-converter-based multi-terminal DC (VSC–MTDC) systems for DC fault clearance. However, it is revealed that the use of DC reactors could undermine the system damping and deteriorate the system stability. In this paper, a controller based on hybrid sensitivity is proposed to improve the stability of power system and realize the power symmetry of multi-terminal systems. Firstly, based on a generalized MTDC small-signal model, an eigenvalue analysis is performed to provide deep insight into the stability issue imposed by DC reactors. Furthermore, a local controller based on hybrid sensitivity was proposed, and on this basis, a global controller was designed to solve asymmetrical power flow. Finally, a four-terminal VSC–MTDC model was built in Simulink to evaluate the performance of DC-PSS. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller in stabilizing MTDC systems and symmetrizing of power flow.

The availability of multiple inputs (plants) can improve output performance by conveniently allocating the control bandwidth among them. Beyond that, the intervention of only the useful plants at each frequency implies the minimum control action at each input. Secondly, in single input control, the addition of feedforward loops from measurable external inputs has been demonstrated to reduce the amount of feedback and, subsequently, palliate its sideband effects of noise amplification. Thus, one part of the action calculated by feedback is now provided by feedforward. This paper takes advantage of both facts for the problem of robust rejection of measurable disturbances by employing a set of control inputs; a previous work did the same for the case of robust reference tracking. Then, a control architecture is provided that includes feedforward elements from the measurable disturbance to each control input and feedback control elements that link the output error to each control input. A methodology is developed for the robust design of the named control elements that distribute the control bandwidth among the cheapest inputs and simultaneously assures the prescribed output performance to correct the disturbed output for a set of possible plant cases (model uncertainty). The minimum necessary feedback gains are used to fight plant uncertainties at the control bandwidth, while feedforward gains achieve the nominal output response. Quantitative feedback theory (QFT) principles are employed. An example illustrates the method and its benefits versus a control architecture with only feedback control elements, which have much more gain beyond the control bandwidth than when feedforward is employed.

Most of the mechanical dynamic systems are subjected to parametric uncertainty, unmodeled dynamics, and undesired external vibrating disturbances while are motion controlled. In this regard, new adaptive and robust, advanced control theories have been developed to efficiently regulate the motion trajectories of these dynamic systems while dealing with several kinds of variable disturbances. In this work, a novel adaptive robust neural control design approach for efficient motion trajectory tracking control tasks for a considerably disturbed non-linear under-actuated quadrotor system is introduced. Self-adaptive disturbance signal modeling based on Taylor-series expansions to handle dynamic uncertainty is adopted. Dynamic compensators of planned motion tracking errors are then used for designing a baseline controller with adaptive capabilities provided by three layers B-spline artificial neural networks (Bs-ANN). In the presented adaptive robust control scheme, measurements of position signals are only required. Moreover, real-time accurate estimation of time-varying disturbances and time derivatives of error signals are unnecessary. Integral reconstructors of velocity error signals are properly integrated in the output error signal feedback control scheme. In addition, the appropriate combination of several mathematical tools, such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), Bézier polynomials, artificial neural networks, and Taylor-series expansions, are advantageously exploited in the proposed control design perspective. In this fashion, the present contribution introduces a new adaptive desired motion tracking control solution based on B-spline neural networks, along with dynamic tracking error compensators for quadrotor non-linear systems. Several numeric experiments were performed to assess and highlight the effectiveness of the adaptive robust motion tracking control for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle while subjected to undesired vibrating disturbances. Experiments include important scenarios that commonly face the quadrotors as path and trajectory tracking, take-off and landing, variations of the quadrotor nominal mass and basic navigation. Obtained results evidence a satisfactory quadrotor motion control while acceptable attenuation levels of vibrating disturbances are exhibited.

The current article presents a design procedure for obtaining robust multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) fractional-order controllers using a μ-synthesis design procedure with D–K iteration. μ-synthesis uses the generalized Robust Control framework in order to find a controller which meets the stability and performance criteria for a family of plants. Because this control problem is NP-hard, it is usually solved using an approximation, the most common being the D–K iteration algorithm, but, this approximation leads to high-order controllers, which are not practically feasible. If a desired structure is imposed to the controller, the corresponding K step is a non-convex problem. The novelty of the paper consists in an artificial bee colony swarm optimization approach to compute the nearly optimal controller parameters. Further, a mixed-sensitivity μ-synthesis control problem is solved with the proposed approach for a two-axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine benchmark problem. The resulting controller using the described algorithm manages to ensure, with mathematical guarantee, both robust stability and robust performance, while the high-order controller obtained with the classical μ-synthesis approach in MATLAB does not offer this.

In this paper, we address the data-driven modeling of a nonlinear dynamical system while incorporating a priori information. The nonlinear system is described using the Koopman operator, which is a linear operator defined on a lifted infinite-dimensional state-space. Assuming that the L2 gain of the system is known, the data-driven finite-dimensional approximation of the operator while preserving information about the gain, namely L2 gain-preserving data-driven modeling, is formulated. Then, its computationally efficient solution method is presented. An application of the modeling method to feedback controller design is also presented. Aiming for robust stabilization using data-driven control under a poor training dataset, we address the following two modeling problems: (1) Forward modeling: the data-driven modeling is applied to the operating data of a plant system to derive the plant model; (2) Backward modeling: L2 gain-preserving data-driven modeling is applied to the same data to derive an inverse model of the plant system. Then, a feedback controller composed of the plant and inverse models is created based on internal model control, and it robustly stabilizes the plant system. A design demonstration of the data-driven controller is provided using a numerical experiment.

Bidirectional Inductive power transfer (IPT) systems behave as high order resonant networks and hence are highly sensitive to changes in system parameters. Traditional PID controllers often fail to maintain satisfactory power regulation in the presence of parametric uncertainties. To overcome these problems, this paper proposes a robust controller which is designed using linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques. The output sensitivity to parametric uncertainty is explored and a linear fractional transformation of the nominal model and its uncertainty is discussed to generate a standard configuration for μ-synthesis and LMI analysis. An H∞ controller is designed based on the structured singular value and LMI feasibility analysis with regard to uncertainties in the primary tuning capacitance, the primary and pickup inductors and the mutual inductance. Robust stability and robust performance of the system is studied through μ-synthesis and LMI feasibility analysis. Simulations and experiments are conducted to verify the power regulation performance of the proposed controller.

In the frame structure of stacker cranes harmful mast vibrations may appear due to the inertial forces of acceleration or the braking movement phase. This effect may reduce the stability and positioning accuracy of these machines. Unfortunately, their dynamic properties also vary with the lifted load magnitude and position. The purpose of the paper is to present a controller design method which can handle the effect of a varying lifted load magnitude and position in a dynamic model and at the same time reveals good reference signal tracking and mast vibration reducing properties. A controller design case study is presented step by step from dynamic modeling through to the validation of the resulting controller. In the paper the dynamic modeling possibilities of single-mast stacker cranes are summarized. The handling of varying dynamical behavior is realized via the polytopic LPV modeling approach. Based on this modeling technique, a gain-scheduled controller design method is proposed, which is suitable for achieving the goals set. Finally, controller validation is presented by means of time domain simulations.

Tip control is a current open issue in soft robotics; therefore, it has received a good amount of attention in recent years. The desirable soft characteristics of these robots turn a well-solved problem in classic robotics, like the end-effector kinematics and dynamics, into a challenging problem. The high redundancy condition of these robots hinders classical solutions, resulting in controllers with very high computational costs. In this paper, a simplification is proposed in the actuation setup of the I-Support soft robot, allowing the use of simple strategies for tip inclination control. In order to verify the proposed approach, inclination step input and trajectory-tracking experiments were performed on a single module of the I-Support robot, resulting in zero output error in all cases, including those where the system was exposed to disturbances. The comparative results of the proposed controllers, a proportional integral derivative (PID) and a fractional order robust (FOPI) controller, validate the feasibility of the proposed approach, showing a clear advantage in the use of the fractional robust controller for the tip inclination control of the I-Support robot compared to the integer order controller.

The current article presents the design, implementation, validation, and use of a Computer-Aided Control System Design (CACSD) toolbox for nonlinear and hybrid system uncertainty modeling, simulation, and control using μ synthesis. Remarkable features include generalization of classical system interconnection operations to nonlinear and hybrid systems, automatic computation of equilibrium points for nonlinear systems, and optimization of least conservative uncertainty bounds, with direct applicability for μ synthesis. A unified approach is presented for the step-down (buck), step-up (boost), and single-ended primary-inductor (SEPIC) converters to showcase the use and flexibility of the toolbox. Robust controllers were computed by minimization of the H∞ norm of the augmented performance systems, encompassing a wide range of uncertainty types, and have been designed using the well-known mixed-sensitivity closed loop shaping μ synthesis method.
