For thousands of years, hunter-gatherer societies from southern and central Patagonia inhabited a Subantarctic landscape. In this paper, we argue against the traditional assumption that these were simple societies. We examine population diversity from ecological, archaeological, and ethno-historical data sources, emphasizing the economic and social variability while considering social change through time. We end by analyzing processes of the development of social complexity and hierarchy in recent times, when the industrial world violently disarticulated those societies. All this evidence suggests levels of social variability and complexity archaeologists have not expected. Women's socio-cultural and gender studies have contributed to new knowledge on the social and cultural construction of the relations between men and women in specific spatial and time contexts. This paper analyzes how several museums of the Province of Buenos Aires created through popular initiatives have organized different spaces ("Rostros de La Pampa", in San Antonio de Areco). It also Iooks at the hierarchical order of the objects recovered, comparing the former with the order bestowed by official institutions in the framework of national policies and linked to the regulations for the preservation of a national culture (Complejo Museográfico Enrique Udaondo, in Luján, and Parque Criollo y Museo Gauchesco Ricardo Güiraldes, in San Antonio de Areco). Birds often compete and engage in interspecific agonistic interactions for access to resources such as food and breeding territories. Based on the observed outcomes from such interactions (i.e., patterns of displacements) dominance hierarchies can be established. Knowing which species can outcompete others for essential resources allows researchers to make predictions about the broader ecological impacts of interspecific interactions. We constructed an interspecific dominance hierarchy of twelve avian species which visited an artificial water source in an arid region of coastal Patagonia, Argentina. Displacements were categorized into four types, based on the behaviors involved in the interaction, and we tested if they could predict the difference in dominance between the interacting species (the difference between calculated dominance coefficients for the two focal species). Indirect displacements, involving only the arrival of the dominant species to the water source without direct aggression toward the subordinate bird, occurred more frequently between species with a large difference in dominance. The most dominant bird observed was the kelp gull (Larus dominicanus), which, due to an increasing population and expanding range, in part due to food supplementation from fisheries waste, is likely to outcompete terrestrial and marine avian species for other scarce resources. The Argentinian case offers many examples of fragmented urban reality, whose deprivation might be fruitfully analysed by deprivation indicators, according to a current trend in literature. Non‐aggregative quantitative method based on the POSET theory offers an alternative approach that may steer clear of the shortcomings of the aggregative approaches. Through our analysis we intend to propose a picture of the Argentinian material and social deprivation. Since our approach does not establish any indicator and avoids absolute hierarchy among areas, it makes a rigorous tool available to public authorities. This allows them the rational choice about where and how intervene, to focus the political action at its best. Our analysis shows that social deprivation is characterized by high variability, which makes it less comparable than material deprivation.
