Previous studies have demonstrated that skin vibration is an important factor affecting the roughness perception of fine textures. For coarse textures, the determining physical factor is much less clear and there are indications that this might be participant-dependent. In this paper, we focused on roughness perception of both coarse and fine textures of different materials (glass particle surfaces and sandpapers). We investigated the relationship between subjective roughness ratings and three physical parameters (skin vibration, friction coefficient, and particle size) within a group of 30 participants. Results of the glass particle surfaces showed both spatial information (particle size) and temporal information (skin vibration) had a high correlation with subjective roughness ratings. The former correlation was slightly but significantly higher than the latter. The results also indicated different weights of temporal information and spatial information for roughness ratings among participants. Roughness ratings of a different material (sandpaper versus glass particles) could be either larger, similar or smaller, indicating differences among individuals. The best way to describe our results is that in their perceptual evaluation of roughness, different individuals weight temporal information, spatial information, and other mechanical properties differently., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Glass microfibers are commonly used as biomolecule adsorption media, as structural or disposable components of the optical biosensors. While any improvement in these components are appreciated, utilizing basic tools of traditional approaches may lead to original sensor opportunities as simple, functional designs that can be easily disseminated. Following this pursuit, surface modification of glass microfiber paper surface was performed by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and resulting improvement in the cell entrapment capacity could be observed visually, only after Gram staining. Gram staining offered rapid validation of enhanced binding on the glass surface. The same APTES-modified samples were also tested for binding of complementary DNA sequences and the results were less straightforward due to the necessity of DNA visualization by using a fluorescent stain, YOYO-1. Accordingly, when there were no surface modification, DNA and YOYO-1 adsorbed readily on the glass microfiber filter paper, and prolonged the interaction between DNA and YOYO-1. YOYO-1 adsorption on glass could be recognized from the color profile of YOYO-1 emission. This phenomenon can be used to examine suitability of APTES coverage on glass surfaces since YOYO-1 emission can be distinguished by its glass adsorbed versus DNA-bound forms. Aptness of surface coverage is vital to biosensor studies in the sense that it is preceding the forthcoming surface modifications and its precision is imperative for attaining the anticipated interaction kinetics of the surface-immobilized species. The effect of three different lining materials on the investment expansion during the casting procedure, was compared. The accuracy of the castings was assessed by measuring slits at the gingival shoulder of a cast veneer crown. The liners were made of asbestosos, paper and a glassfiber material. They were used with a gypsum bonded and a phosphate bonded investment material using a regular type III and a high-fusing alloy. The glass-fiber material seemed to give a good and reproducible accuracy with both investments. The effect of this liner seemed to be comparable or better than that of the conventional asbest material. The paper liner sometimes allowed a sufficient expansion, but with varying results. Additional problems were connected to this material as it was burnt to ash during the mould heating procedure.

Biologically active (14)C-labeled purified protein derivative ((14)C-PPD) has been prepared from the culture filtrates of seven species of mycobacteria, namely Mycobacterium tuberculosis Johnston strain (PPD), M. bovis BCG (PPD-BCG), M. avium (PPD-A), M. kansasii (PPD-Y), M. intracellulare (PPD-B), M. scrofulaceum (PPD-G), and M. fortuitum (PPD-F). These mycobacteria were grown in a culture medium containing a mixture of (14)C-labeled amino acids. The yield and specific radioactivity of the PPD, of the nucleic acid, of the bacterial cells, and of the CO(2) developed during growth have been determined for each of the seven species of mycobacteria. Although the yields of (14)C-PPD antigens differed greatly for the different species of mycobacteria tested, their specific radioactivities were similar. The (14)C-PPD antigens have been used as a means to measure their adsorption to glass. When glass ampoules containing dilute solutions (0.001 mg of PPD per ml) of these PPD antigens (PPD, PPD-BCG, PPD-A, PPD-Y, PPD-G, PPD-B, and PPD-F) were stored for 12 months at 5 C, it was found that they all adsorbed equally well to glass surfaces. In fact, regardless of the origin of the PPD, a loss due to adsorption of about 90% occurred during the first month of storage, and thereafter the PPD content remained practically constant for the rest of the duration of the storage period. The addition of 0.0005% Tween 80 to the PPD solutions effectively reduced the adsorption to glass of most PPD antigens. However, adsorption of PPD-BCG was not quite so effectively prevented, even when the Tween 80 concentration was increased from 0.0005 to 0.0005%.

Parallel to the rapid growth of the population, the rate of consumption is increasing all over the world; this causes significant increases in the amount of waste. Thanks to the recycling of waste, not only environmental pollution is prevented but also a great contribution to the economy is made. One of the basic conditions for ensuring maximum performance in recycling processes is the classification of wastes according to their contents. At this stage, minimizing the human factor is an important issue in terms of time, labor, and performance of recycling facilities. In this research, paper, glass, plastic, and organic waste pictures obtained from the external environment were classified with the help of machine learning techniques. In classification, four- and five-layer deep convolutional neural networks algorithms were used. According to the results of the research, five-layer architecture was able to distinguish the wastes with a 70% accuracy rate. In the research, as the number of layers decreased, the performance values of the networks decreased. In the four-layer architecture, wastes could be separated by a rate of 61.67%. In both network architectures, the accuracy rate in differentiating plastic wastes from other wastes was found to be lower. The accuracy rate in the classification of plastic wastes was determined as 37% and 56.7% in four-layer and five-layer DCNN architectures, respectively. In the research, organic wastes were distinguished with higher accuracy compared to other wastes. While undertaking a study of the effects of strontium-90 on Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) near Chalk River, Ontario, we noticed the presence of anthropogenic litter (pieces of metal, glass, and plastic, and paper, plastic, and foil wrappers, >1 mm in size) in the nestlings. Although combustible litter (pieces of plastic and wrappers) were not quantified before the nestlings were incinerated in 2014 and 2015, gizzards were dissected in 2016. Litter (>1 mm diameter) was found in 30% of the 74 nestlings examined. This material is most likely provided to nestlings, along with food (insects) and natural grit (sand, stones, and mollusc shells), which we also found, by parent birds; however, it could lead to internal injuries and/or harmful substances being absorbed by the young birds. In the era of big data and artificial intelligence, public datasets are becoming increasingly important for researchers to build and evaluate their models. This paper presents the FIKWaste dataset, which contains time series data for the volume of waste produced in three restaurant kitchens in Portugal. Organic (undifferentiated) and inorganic (glass, paper, and plastic) waste bins were monitored for a consecutive period of four weeks. In addition to the time series measurements, the FIKWaste dataset contains labels for waste disposal events, i.e., when the waste bins are emptied, and technical and non-technical details of the monitored kitchens.

Starting from the concept of capacitive sensing, a brief comparison of printing techniques, the essential requirements of inkjet-printing and the attractive features of state-of-the art inkjet-printed tactile sensors developed on diverse substrates (paper, polymer, glass and textile) are presented in this comprehensive review. We have interfaced an array of polymer light emitting diodes (OLEDs) fabricated onto a glass substrate to a sheet of paper via a pressure sensitive conducting adhesive. By screen printing a series of capacitive touch pads and connecting tracks onto paper using a low-cost conductive graphite ink, we are able to drive individual pixels in the OLED array via CMOS-based electronics that are also attached to the paper. Three AA batteries are used to power the CMOS electronics, touch pads and the OLED array, with pixels in the array operating at a brightness of up to 210 cd/m2. In most municipalities in India, the collection, transportation and disposal of municipal solid waste deviates from the mass flow envisaged by the municipal agencies and planning authorities. While multiple studies have focused on the environmental problems arising due to uncontrolled waste dumping and combustion, we present a qualitative study of the efforts towards resource conservation and recycling by various actors involved, and a quantitative estimate of the amount of material recovered at various stages. Both the informal sectors (garbage collectors, waste pickers, waste dealers, small stores and itinerant merchants) and the households in India, play a vital role in recovering consumer waste. In order to have an in-depth understanding, a case study has been performed to better understand the contribution of households, garbage collectors and itinerant waste merchants towards recovering consumer waste. Our study shows that consumer waste is far more efficiently recovered in India than what has been reported in literature until now. The waste recovery takes place in multiple-stages and the final waste that reaches the municipal corporation mostly comprises of biodegradable waste, inerts and highly non-recyclable waste. Households, itinerant waste merchants and garbage collectors in India jointly recover 1.2–2.4 million tonnes of newspapers, 2.4–4.3 million tonnes of cardboard and mixed paper, 6.5–8.5 million tonnes of plastic, more than1.3 million tonnes of glass, more than 2.6 million tonnes of metal waste and 4–6.2 million tonnes of other recyclable material per year. Overall, 30–60% of all paper and cardboard, 50–80% of all plastic and close to 100% of all glass bottles produced in India are recycled. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper reports the results of a multilevel structure equation model predicting general and fraction specific self-reported recycling behaviour. The model was tested on a sample of 697 undergraduate students from four Norwegian universities who each reported their degree of participation in the local recycling schemes for paper/cardboard, glass, metal, and plastic. It was demonstrated that variance in recycling behaviour can be divided into a smaller general part that is relatively stable across waste fractions and a specific part that depends on the respective fraction. General recycling behaviour is well predicted by intentions to recycle and recycling habits, whereas perceived behavioural control is to a large extend fraction specific and influences the fraction specific recycling. Perceived behavioural control mediates the influence of the recycling scheme type, distance to recycling containers, and transport mode used to reach the recycling containers. This paper presents an anisotropic damage model to deal with the fragmentation induced by impact loadings on glass samples. As small-scale (i.e. sub-element) damage is described as well as cracks extending above the element scale, an approach referred to as “meso-damage” is developed. The latter, which is based on the knowledge of random distributions of initiation sites, predicts different regimes such as single or multiple fragmentation. Abstract: Concern about fatigue is one of the factors limiting use of glass/epoxy jointing systems for timber in construction. In this paper, a series of high-cycle fatigue tests are reported which indicate that the performance is as good, if not superior to, conventional jointing systems. The performance of the joints was found to produce a straight line on a logarithmic S–N plot and thus be readily predictable for design purposes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article presents a discussion about an analytical model for spreading and impact of one drop relative to inkjet printing. The model was developed to understand the differences in the maximal wetted area on glass and three different papers and to predict the radius of the wetted area shortly after the impact of the ink drops. It mentions that the model closely predicts literature data for plane smooth substrates, with an empirical dissipation factor, which is just the function of the Ohnesorge number.

This paper discusses the use of etalons fabricated from prepared glass slides to quantify the dimensional stability of two adhesive materials in damp environments. This technique facilitated the screening of adhesives for a kinematically demanding application. In addition to describing the etalon technique, additional data are provided on the performance of the device with the selected adhesives. One of the adhesives is simply identified as a cationic cured adhesive, while the other adhesive was Loctite 3615. A range of adhesive bond gaps from 50 to 500 μm was examined for the adhesive that showed the least displacement resulting from environmental aging. A group of five different types of reusable and disposable hot drink cups have been analyzed in detail with respect to their overall energy costs during fabrication and use. Electricity generating methods and efficiencies have been found to be key factors in the primary energy consumption for the washing of reusable cups and a less important factor in cup fabrication. In Canada or the United States, over 500 or more use cycles, reusable cups are found to have about the same or slightly more energy consumption, use for use, as moulded polystyrene foam cups used once and then discarded. For the same area paper cups used once and discarded are found to consume less fossil fuel energy per use than any of the other cup types examined. This note reports data about a heterogeneous assemblage of anthropogenic litter recorded in 307 nesting and roosting sites of Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis) from a small Mediterranean island. I obtained items of anthropogenic litter on > 30% on the total, with plastic, glass and paper the significantly more abundant litter categories. Litter items were found in the nests mainly as a dry remnant in the regurgitated pellets. Fragments of expanded polystyrene (EPS) with peck marks were also recorded, these last transported to the nests because of their resemblance to the cuttlebones of the Sepia cuttlefish. Ingestion of this litter and the pecking on EPS can negatively impact on seabirds. Moreover, the presence of this litter highlights a transport of polluting material even at considerable distance from anthropized areas. Finally, the presence of scavenger species (an endemic lizard and terrestrial molluscs) feeding on food remains could suggest an assimilation of litter into the trophic webs.
