The intensive winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–summer maize (Zea mays L.) cropping systems in the North China Plain (NCP) rely on the heavy use of mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizers. As the fertigated area of wheat and maize in the NCP has grown rapidly during recent years, developing N management strategies is required for sustainable wheat and maize production. Field experiments were conducted in Hebei Province during three consecutive growth seasons in 2012–2015 to assess the influence of different N fertigation rates on N uptake, yield, and nitrogen use efficiency [NUE: recovery efficiency (REN) and agronomic efficiency (AEN)]. Five levels of N application, 0 (FN0), 40 (FN40%), 70 (FN70%), 100 (FN100%), and 130% (FN130%) of the farmer practice rate (FP: 250 kg N ha−1 and 205.5 kg N ha−1 for wheat and maize, respectively), corresponding to 0, 182.2, 318.9, 455.5, and 592.2 kg N ha−1 y−1, respectively, were tested. Nitrogen in the form of urea was dissolved in irrigation water and split into six and four applications for wheat and maize, respectively. In addition, the treatment "drip irrigation + 100% N conventional broadcasting" (DN100%) was also conducted. All treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results revealed the significant influence of both N fertigation rate and N application method on grain yield and NUE. Compared to DN100%, FN100% significantly increased the 3‐year averaged N recovery efficiency (REN) by 0.09 kg kg−1 and 0.04 kg kg−1, and the 3‐year averaged N agronomic efficiency (AEN) by 2.43 kg kg−1 and 1.62 kg kg−1 for wheat and maize, respectively. Among N fertigation rates, there was no significant increase in grain yield in response to N applied at a greater rate than 70% of FP due to excess N accumulation in vegetative tissues. Compared to FN70%, FN100%, and FN130%, FN40% increased the REN by 0.17–0.57 kg kg−1 and 0.03–0.34 kg kg−1and the AEN by 4.60–27.56 kg kg−1 and 2.40–10.62 kg kg−1 for wheat and maize, respectively. Based on a linear‐response relationship between the N fertigation rate and grain yield over three rotational periods it can be concluded that recommended N rates under drip fertigation with optimum split applications can be reduced to 46% (114.6 kg N ha−1) and 58% (116.6 kg N ha−1) of FP for wheat and maize, respectively, without negatively affecting grain yield, thereby increasing NUE. Various cropping patterns are extensively used on the North China Plain, which greatly alter various soil properties. Although these soil properties respond differently to the different cropping patterns, little is known about the possible effects of cropping patterns on desalinized soils. To assess the effects of the different cropping patterns on soil properties and enzyme activities, a long-term field experiment was conducted at the Nanpi Agro-Ecological Station in Hebei Province, China. The cropping patterns under study were the single-cropping patterns of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), spring maize (Zea mays), and spring cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), and the double-cropping pattern of winter wheat–summer maize (WW–SM), which is the predominant cropping pattern on the North China Plain. Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0–100 cm, depending on the soil properties. Our results indicated that soil available phosphorous (P) and available potassium (K) concentrations at 0–20 cm were greater than those of the subsurfaces. Soil organic matter declined with depth, and WW–SM had the highest amount in the deep levels. The WW–SM cropping pattern also generally showed greater levels of enzyme activities than did the single-cropping patterns, proving that diverse crops can enhance enzyme activities. Soil pH generally increased with depth despite there being no significant differences between the cropping patterns. No significant effects were observed on soil electrical conductivity (EC). However, EC generally increased with depth in spring cotton and winter wheat and declined in spring maize and WW–SM. Winter wheat had a significant aggregate size (<0.053 mm) at 20–40 cm depth and generally showed the lowest amount of nutrients. This study suggests that a fallow period allows the soil to regenerate its structure, whereas WW–SM enhances high soil organic matter in the deep soil layers and promotes increased soil enzyme activities. This indicates that crop rotation could sustainably exploit soil resources without reducing fertility over a long period. There is a need to incorporate different soil management practices for single-cropping patterns to increase their productivity, especially in spring maize, whose organic matter declined the most. Abstract: Wheat–maize double cropping is the most important cropping system on the Hebei Plain and is one of the most important cropping systems in China. In a scenario of greater food demand, and increasing water and rural labour scarcity, it is critical that the annual productivity of the system is improved in water-energy-cost efficient and low carbon ways. Based on farm surveys, this paper benchmarked the performance of wheat–maize double crops on the Hebei Plain during the 2004–2005 season. These farm yields were assessed both against experimental yields collected from on-farm maximum yield trials conducted during the same 2004–2005 season and relative to simulated estimates of the climate-driven potential productivity of the region. The survey of 362 farms in six counties of the Hebei Plain during the 2004–2005 season found wheat yields ranging from 3375kgha−1 to 9000kgha−1 with an overall average yield of 6556kgha−1. Maize yields averaged 7549kgha−1 and ranged from 3375kgha−1 to 11,250kgha−1. The aggregate production for the wheat–maize double crops grown in the 2004–2005 season averaged 14,105kgha−1 across the six counties. This was 72% of the average production (19,586kgha−1) recorded from on-farm trials conducted in each of the six counties and 60% of the simulated average production potential (24,147kgha−1) for the Hebei Plain in the 2004–2005 season. Thus, the annual productivity of the current cropping system could be increased with currently available technologies by 28%, while a yield increase of 42% is possible if farm yields approach the simulated yield potential. Based on farmer interviews and field observations, a number of real and perceived reasons for the current yield gaps in farmers’ fields were recognised. For instance, irrigation at stem-elongation of wheat is a current recommendation, yet only a proportion of the surveyed farmers were able to follow this strategy due to lack of access to shared irrigation facilities. Improving the region''s infrastructure to enable more timely irrigation of crops will be a necessary prerequisite to improved productivity. The results from the farm surveys and on-farm trials indicate that, with current recommended practices, farmers can improve their annual farm productivity and close the current yield gaps. However, the survey identified that increasing system performance and efficiency will require a focus on both agronomic and socio-economic issues. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
