Cyprus Government Railway (CGR), which operated between 1905-1951 was constructed during the British Colonial period. Railway heritage is important, since it is part of the common cultural heritage of both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities living on the island. However, division of the island is a challenge to the conservation of the railway heritage. Unfortunately, little effort has been made by the two communities to document, preserve and reuse railway heritage buildings and related structures. The main goal of the paper is to raise the awareness of the railway heritage in Cyprus and to propose strategies to use this common heritage as a tool for reconciliation in a divided island. The method of the study included archive survey conducted to identify original railway buildings and structures. Secondly, field studies were completed in order to record the present day condition of the railway heritage. Lastly, a vision for the future of the shared heritage has been put forward for inter-communal benefit. CGR is a shared heritage of the both the communities. Due to its potential to contribute to the reconciliation of the society, conservation of the railway heritage is crucial in terms of transferring the culture to the next generations. As forensic humanitarian and forensic human rights anthropology has continued to evolve, an ongoing concern in the field is meaningful engagement with survivors and the imperative to do no harm. For forensic anthropologists attempting to engage in grassroots forensic intervention, unaffiliated with an international investigation, means for effectively accessing and engaging communities has not been widely discussed. Here, forensic anthropologists draw on multiple, cross-cultural contexts to discuss methods and techniques for introducing forensic partnerships to communities. To do this, the scientist must consider their positionality as well as that of the stakeholders, develop effective local relationships, and consider a community-grounded approach. This paper argues that drawing on broader cultural anthropological training, ultimately informs one's ability to gain entry into at-risk and vulnerable communities while minimizing harm. The article discusses the role of the Greek community in determining the attitude of Australia to the Cyprus problem. This paper focuses on the influence of the Greek community in Australia for determining the foreign policy of Cyprus. It gives attention to the issues of both government in parliamentarians. The associations during the Hawke Labor Governments in the year 1983 to 1990 are investigated in reference to the Australian foreign policy. The issues on Cyprus foreign policies are different from the rest for the significant role of Greek communities.

This article explores the rationale and modus operandi of Turkey's soft power projection in north Cyprus ['TRNC'] with the aim to better understand its effects on the Turkish Cypriot political and social spheres. The study explores the recorded activities carried out by Turkey's most prominent soft power agencies in north Cyprus and cross-checks findings with field-notes collected from 2018 to 2021. While acknowledging that under AKP's rule, religion, history, and humanitarian ideals have constituted the backbone of Turkey's soft power agenda in areas important to its foreign policy interests, the analysis demonstrates that Turkish soft power does not simply rest on the attractiveness and persuasiveness of its 'message value' alone. Turkey exercises a centrally coordinated and multi-dimensional soft power that capitalizes heavily on dependencies and local vulnerabilities. With the use of subtle and direct forms of coercion and interference, understood as part of a legitimate exchange of 'influence for security', Turkey's soft power content and methodologies have become particularly problematic, as they do not presume the purely voluntary, independent, and co-opting nature of relations between the powerholder and the receptor community. This study is the first to explore monthly and seasonal succession of the zooplankton community in coastal waters of Cyprus using a 12-month period time series. A total of 192 taxa of mesozooplankton (MZ), 145 of which were copepods, were identified at three sites at the southern and one site at the northern coasts of the island. Zooplankton distribution and community structure were influenced mostly by stratification, temperature and Chl-a. The combination of upwelling and advection from the Rhodes Gyre during summer, causing cooler waters in the southern coast of Cyprus, seems to control the food supply and offered favorable feeding conditions to zooplankton, enhancing their numbers. The proximity to a fish farm also positively affected MZ abundance and biomass. This study also revealed the importance of smaller species (e.g. Clausocalanus paululus) and juvenile stages (e.g. Clausocalanus , Oithona and Corycaeus spp.) in composition, structure and functionality of the copepod community. These species seems to be more important in low Chl-a environments, where the relative size of primary consumers is expected to be smaller and the microbial components dominant. This baseline study paves the way for further investigation of the elements of marine food webs in the ultra-oligotrophic environment of the Eastern Mediterranean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This Special Issue explores coastal living, foregrounding the experiences of childhood across time and place. The contributions come from the international, interdisciplinary project titled 'Valuing the past, sustaining the future: Education, knowledge and identity across three generations in coastal communities' which was carried out in coastal communities in Norway, the Faroe Islands, Ireland, Cyprus and Australia. Coastal childhoods in communities undergoing rapid economic and social change are explored, providing rich empirical insight into questions of identity, belonging and attachment to place. Most contributors adopt an intergenerational lens to examine change through time, placing children's lives and childhoods within the social context of their families and communities as well as the globalised world of the twenty-first century. A number of studies to date examine dimensions of social phobia and anxiety in adolescents. A variety of tools has been developed, along with their abbreviated versions, that are used to assess Social Anxiety (SA) but little research has been devoted to the types of fears they each assess. Due to differences in the content of the multitude of instruments, different aspects of SA are addressed and this leads to confusion when the relationship between SA and other constructs is being investigated. The aim of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of the abbreviated Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory SPAI-23 in Greek-Cypriot community adolescents and describe dimensions of social fears at that age. Seven hundred twentyone adolescent students from Cyprus, (Mean Age: 15.5, Range: 13-19, SD: 1.12, 64% female) participated in the study. Participants completed, among others, an abbreviated version of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (SPAI-23). Exploratory Factor Analysis on the SPAI-23 revealed a quite similar structure to the original questionnaire (SPAI). Three Social Phobia factors, describing distinct socially fearful situations, were identified (Performance, Interaction, and Presence in a social context) and one Agoraphobia factor after the evaluation of alternative solutions. Findings were verified by means of Confirmatory Factor Analysis, testing alternative models. Overall, findings were in line with recent evidence on youth samples, and contribute to significant insights towards more sophisticated and personalized assessments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of lockdown on pain and stiffness, associated with changes in daily habits, work routine and activities, in the academic community in Greece and Cyprus. METHOD A cross-sectional study was conducted with 308 university faculty members and students. Pain was measured with the short form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), and pain intensity, stiffness, daily activities and work routine changes were assessed. RESULTS Daily habits and work routine changed during lockdown, with an increase in sedentary mode, and the changes were significantly related to pain (p<0.05). Most participants reported stiffness, especially after prolonged sitting, which was reduced when they exercised, especially with walking or running (p=0.013). Pain was significantly greater during lockdown (p<0.001), primarily in the back and neck, but also in the form of headache/migraines. The respondents perceived their pain mainly as “tiring-exhausting”. Sitting for long hours significantly increased pain intensity (mean score=4.35, on a scale from 1 to 6). CONCLUSIONS Working from home indirectly forces university faculty members and students into a sedentary lifestyle. Online teaching and learning entail prolonged sitting in front of the computer, which is associated with bad sitting postures, disturbed sleep habits and long periods of physical inactivity. These are related to stiffness and pain, especially in the back, neck and head. As the pandemic continues and distance learning is expected to remain as an alternative mode in universities, even after the pandemic, emphasis should be given to the occupational health of people in the academic community. Intervention strategies are needed to prevent chronic musculoskeletal problems, with promotion of awareness of ergonomic training and ergonomic working arrangements at home, and encouragement of physical exercise of any type, especially walking or running. Current views of Cyprus during the Middle Bronze Age (or Middle Cypriot period) depict an island largely isolated from the wider eastern Mediterranean world and comprised largely if not exclusively of "egalitarian," agropastoral communities. In this respect, its economy stands at odds with those of polities in other, nearby regions such as the Levant, or Crete in the Aegean. The publication of new excavations and new readings of legacy data necessitate modification of earlier views about Cyprus's political economy during the Middle Bronze Age, prompting this review. We discuss at some length the island's settlement and mortuary records, materials related to internal production, external exchange and connectivities, and the earliest of the much discussed but still enigmatic fortifications. We suggest that Middle Bronze Age communities are likely to have been significantly more complex, mobile, and interconnected than once envisaged and that the changes that mark the closing years of this period and the transition to the internationalism of Late Bronze Age Cyprus represent the culmination of an evolving series of internal developments and external interactions. An essay on the Cyprus problem is presented. It disputes expectations of conflict that would arise from relaxation of population movement across the Green line that separates Greek and Turkish Cypriots and explores the resulting economic interdependence it brought about that changed behaviors of communities on both sides even for those people who had rejected the 2004 Annan plan. The authors reflect on the economic benefits of the Green Line movement due to people going on either side for recreation, religious visits, or shopping as well as the consequent employment and services.

This two-year study explores the community structure and temporal dynamics of carabid and tenebrionid beetles in five eastern Mediterranean juniper maquis formations in relation to successional stage. Based on vegetation cover, density and soil pH, the successional stage in two of the sites (Crete, Cyprus) was an earlier state compared with the other three (Attiki, Naxos, Samos), as a result of intense goat grazing. Diversity indices and abundance distributions were compared using morphoecological surrogates of the taxa. Temporal dynamics were regulated more by cumulative species richness than by sharp phenological patterns. The higher values of niche pre-emption parameter and species turnover imply better adaptation of endemic tenebrionids to the rapid change of environmental conditions, compared with carabids. Significantly lower abundance and biomass, and higher evenness and temporal turnover for both families in Crete and Cyprus are ascribed to the reversed course of succession caused by overgrazing. History, especially contemporary history, teaches us that, just like every society, the international one is also double-faced. One of them is the face of conflict, change, the dialectic of power . The other one stands for balance, social rules and structures that describe the society at one point. Therefore, reaching a consensus and a balance, more than conflict, are defining traits of any given society. Within International Conflict Transformation, starting from the late 90's, the focus has been set on conflicts based on identity, inter-group dialogue, bi-communal programs and intervention strategies through the citizens themselves. In the case of Cyprus, both Turkish-Cypriots and Greek-Cypriots perceive themselves as victims of one another , which makes it so that both of them have historical and territorial claims that reflect both sides of the same coin. The Turkish invasion of 1974 didn't really serve anybody's interests, quite the contrary. The Annan Plan, which was advocating for a federal bi-zonal and bi-communal solution, was supported by the Turkish-Cypriot community, but it failed because of the rejection from the Greek-Cypriot community. The latter joined the European Union in 2004, while the Turkish-Cypriots continue being institutionally excluded, and have not been able to fully benefit the EU's initiatives aimed at helping them out of isolation. This brief article takes as a starting point a carved shell pendant characteristic of the Philia facies of the Early Bronze Age in Cyprus. A discussion of this class of object leads on to a consideration of broader issues surrounding the nature and extent of Philia settlement. These pendants appear to have played a significant role in proclaiming and maintaining Philia identity and demonstrate an aspect of bidirectional interaction between Philia and Late Chalcolithic communities. A detailed, personalized report is provided concerning the data gathered to determine whether a workship planned for Greek and Turkish Cypriotes was feasible and desirable, to formulate the goals of the enterprise, actually to recruit participants, and to ascertain some of the opinions and attitudes likely to be expressed during that workshop. The data could not be utilized, however, because a few days before the participants were to gather in Northern Italy the government of the Greek community on the island was overthrown and five days later an invasion by the Turks began.
