2. Prevalence and type of ocular disease in a population of aged captive nondomestic felids.

Objectives: Report of prevalence and type of ocular disease in a captive population of nondomestic felids. Methods: Medical records of 202 cats from 1993 to 2018 were reviewed. Species, age at diagnosis, sex, ocular examination abnormalities, systemic/physical examination abnormalities, type of examination (visual, sedated, or anesthetized), ocular structures affected, other diagnostics, therapy, and resolution of ocular disease were recorded. Results: A total of 202 nondomestic felids including 18 different species (bobcat, caracal, cougar, Fishing cat, Geoffroy's cat, jaguar, jungle cat, leopard, leopard cat, liger, lion, lynx, ocelot, Sand cat, Savannah cat, serval, snow leopard, and tiger) from a rescue facility were evaluated. Forty‐six ocular lesions were diagnosed in 33 (16.3%) cats from 8 different species (bobcat, caracal, cougar, leopard, lion, ocelot, serval, and tiger) with a mean age of 16 ± 5.9 years at time of diagnosis. Ocular lesions included corneal disease (37%) (ulcerations, perforations, keratitis, corneal scars), cataracts (23.9%), hyphema (8.7%), lens luxation (6.5%), retinal detachment (6.5%), uveitis (4.3%), conjunctival disease (4.3%), retinal degeneration (2.1%), glaucoma (2.1%), and optic neuritis (2.1%). Therapies included medical (topical antibiotics, anti‐inflammatories, serum, etc.) and/or surgical management (enucleation, intracapsular lens extraction, corneoconjunctival transposition, and corneal burr debridement). Conclusions: To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of the prevalence of ocular disease in a population of captive nondomestic felids. It is difficult to diagnose and treat ocular disease in nondomestic cats due to challenges related to handling, diagnostics, and therapeutics in nondomestic species. 3. Excision of a feline limbal melanoma and use of nictitans cartilage to repair the resulting corneoscleral defect.

A limbal melanoma was surgically removed from a 12-year-old castrated male black domestic shorthair (DSH) cat. The resulting full-thickness eye wall defect was repaired using the autologous third eyelid cartilage. The patient was followed for 85 days postoperatively, during which time there was no recurrence. Other than a small amount of fibrin and blood at the anterior lens capsule, no significant complications were seen. Use of the third eyelid cartilage as graft material following resection of a feline limbal melanoma can be effective for repairing large eye wall defects and preserving ocular function. The third eyelid proved to be a convenient source of graft material. In addition, autologous grafting can reduce the potential for iatrogenic spread of infectious agents such as feline herpes virus. 4. Feline corneal sequestrum: laboratory analysis of ocular samples from 12 cats.

Feline corneal sequestrum is a common ocular condition typified by brown to black discoloration of the cornea. The nature of the discoloration has not been identified. The purpose of this study was to perform a laboratory investigation of ocular samples from 12 clinical cases of feline corneal sequestrum in an attempt to characterize the nature of the discoloration. The 12 cases were referred to the Ophthalmology Unit at the Animal Health Trust between April and September 2000, and were also part of a clinical review of 64 cases of feline corneal sequestrum described separately. Five laboratory techniques that are routinely performed at the Biomaterials Unit, Aston University were employed for analysis of the ocular samples. Ocular material included corneal sequestrum, tear samples, meibomian gland secretions, and bandage contact lenses from the 12 clinical cases. High-performance liquid chromatography data showed that total tear lipid in affected eyes was significantly lower than in control eyes ( P = 0.016); total tear lipid in affected eyes was lower than in the unaffected, contralateral eyes of the same cat but the difference was not significant ( P = 0.29). The presence of an unknown lipid class was observed in tears and meibomian secretions of affected, contralateral and control eyes. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the discoloration in affected corneas was not due to the presence of iron. Fluorescence spectroscopic analysis of sequestra, unaffected corneas and contact lenses (from affected and contralateral/unaffected eyes) showed that lipid and protein were present but did not play an important role in sequestra. Ultraviolet–visible light absorbance spectroscopy revealed a peak at 385 nm in unaffected corneas that was absent in sequestra and the difference was significant ( P < 0.0001); this peak may be a characteristic feature of the normal feline cornea. The absorbance spectra displayed a peak at 280 nm in two sequestra suggesting that chromophore groups (e.g. melanin) were present. Optical microscopy performed on 10 sequestra revealed the presence of particles, which were consistent with the appearance of melanin particles, providing laboratory evidence that characterized the nature of the discoloration as melanin for the first time. Feline corneal sequestrum is a common condition of the feline cornea. The purpose of this study was to provide a detailed description of the clinical features of the condition including the response to different management options and to assess the rate of recurrence. The medical records of 64 cases (80 eyes) of feline corneal sequestra that presented to the Animal Health Trust from 1993 to 2000 were reviewed. Fifty-two cases were reviewed retrospectively; 12 cases were assessed prospectively between April and September 2000 as part of a separate study. The Persian was the most frequently encountered breed and the mean age of affected cats was 5.6 years. At initial presentation, sequestra were unilateral in 58 cats and bilateral in 6 cats, 5 of which were Persians. Ocular discomfort and ocular discharge were common presenting signs, occurring in 42 and 36 eyes, respectively. Seventy-four eyes were managed surgically with keratectomy only ( n = 44) or keratectomy followed by a graft procedure ( n = 30). Sequestra recurred in 16 eyes in the study. There was no significant difference in the rate of recurrence between eyes that received a graft procedure ( n = 5) and eyes that did not ( n = 11) ( P = 0.56). Complications following transection of conjunctival pedicle grafts were observed. Brown to black discoloration of noncorneal tissue and therapeutic biomaterials was observed, including discoloration of both viable and apparently nonviable grafted conjunctival tissue, small intestinal submucosa graft material and bandage contact lenses. 6. Corneoconjunctival transposition for the treatment of feline corneal sequestra: a retrospective study of 17 cases (1990–1998).

Abstract Objective To describe and evaluate the use of corneoconjunctival transposition as a surgical treatment for corneal sequestra in cats. Animals studied Fifteen cats (17 eyes) of various breeds and ages with corneal sequestra treated surgically with corneoconjunctival transposition. Procedure Retrospective medical records study. Results Median age was 39 months. Eight patients were castrated males, five were spayed females, and two were intact females. The left eye was affected in eight cats, the right eye was affected in five cats, and both eyes were affected in two cats. Mean (± SD) sequestrum diameter was 4.4 ± 2.4 mm (range 1–10 mm) and the sequestrum was located centrally in all cases. Sequestra occurred in the superficial stroma in 8/17 corneas, in the anterior one third of the stroma in 3/17 corneas, and in the middle one third of the stroma in 6/17 corneas. Median duration of clinical signs prior to presentation was 39 days (range 14–1095 days). Median time to healing, defined as the number of days from surgery to cessation of medical treatment, was 34 days (range 25–86 days). There were no recurrences and minimal scar formation. Conclusions Corneoconjunctival transposition is a valid procedure for surgical treatment of corneal sequestra in cats. The procedure results in excellent cosmesis and functional vision with no recurrences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
