With the increasing popularity of IoT (Internet-of-Things) devices, their security becomes an increasingly important issue. Buffer overflow vulnerabilities have been known for decades, but are still relevant, especially for embedded devices where certain security measures cannot be implemented due to hardware restrictions or simply due to their impact on performance. Therefore, many buffer overflow detection mechanisms check for overflows only before critical data are used. All data that an attacker could use for his own purposes can be considered critical. It is, therefore, essential that all critical data are checked between writing a buffer and its usage. This paper presents a vulnerability of the ESP32 microcontroller, used in millions of IoT devices, that is based on a pointer that is not protected by classic buffer overflow detection mechanisms such as Stack Canaries or Shadow Stacks. This paper discusses the implications of vulnerability and presents mitigation techniques, including a patch, that fixes the vulnerability. The overhead of the patch is evaluated using simulation as well as an ESP32-WROVER-E development board. We showed that, in the simulation with 32 general-purpose registers, the overhead for the CoreMark benchmark ranges between 0.1% and 0.4%. On the ESP32, which uses an Xtensa LX6 core with 64 general-purpose registers, the overhead went down to below 0.01%. Throughout the first decades of the 21st century, the maritime borders of the European Union have witnessed a growing and increasingly complex mobility of an irregular nature. Moreover, the effects of the COVID-19 crisis on many African countries revealed the weakness of the maritime border and its permeability, as well as its increased danger. This research aims to study these irregular migration flows by sea during 2020 and 2021, through the Atlantic border between the Canary Islands and Africa. The so-called "Canary route" is one of the most dangerous maritime routes in the world due to the ocean conditions, the distances that must be covered and the way in which migrants move. Our analysis will therefore focus on one of the central aspects of this crossing, its danger and associated accident rate, which can be measured in terms of the number of shipwrecks, deaths, and missing persons. The objectives of this paper are: i) to show the spatial location of those wrecks; ii) to give an estimate of data on missing persons and deaths; iii) to focus on the study of those persons affected; iv) to delve into the underlying causes; and v) to analyse the border control actions developed during the pandemic. With this aim, information has been compiled from different national and international sources: official records, contrasted data provided by some NGOs and the IOM, and testimonies of the agents involved. This material is used to reflect on the normalization of border control as a factor that inevitably leads to deaths and disappearances. It suggests that this event should be a central element in European migration policy, contributing to designing border control actions that go beyond containment, thereby preventing the loss of human lives. The Canary Island Long-Baseline Observatory (CILBO) is a double-station meteor camera setup located on the Canary Islands operated by ESA's Meteor Research Group since 2010. Observations of meteors are obtained in the visual wavelength band by intensified video cameras from both stations, supplemented by an intensified video camera mounted with a spectral grating at one of the locations. The cameras observe during cloudless and precipitation-free nights, and data are transferred to a main computer located at ESA/ESTEC once a day. The image frames that contain spectral information are calibrated, corrected, and finally processed into line intensity profiles. An ablation simulation, based on Bayesian statistics using a Markov chain Monte Carlo method, allows determining a parameter space, including the ablation temperatures, chemical elements, and their corresponding line intensities, to fit against the line intensity profiles of the observed meteor spectra. The algorithm is presented in this paper and one example is discussed. Several hundred spectra have been processed and made available through the Guest Archive Facility of the Planetary Science Archive of ESA. The data format and metadata are explained. In the eastern Atlantic Ocean, several volcanic archipelagos are located close to the margin of the African continent. This configuration has inspired previous studies to suggest an important role of edge-driven convection (EDC) in the generation of intraplate magmatism. In a companion paper (Manjón-Cabeza Córdoba and Ballmer, 2021), we showed that EDC alone is insufficient to sustain magmatism of the magnitude required to match the volume of these islands. However, we also found that EDC readily develops near a step of lithospheric thickness, such as the oceanic–continental transition ("edge") along the western African cratonic margin. In this work, we carry out 3D numerical models of mantle flow and melting to explore the possible interactions between EDC and mantle plumes. We find that the stem of a plume that rises close to a lithospheric edge is significantly deflected ocean-ward (i.e., away from the edge). The pancake of ponding hot material at the base of the lithosphere is also deflected by the EDC convection cell (either away or towards the edge). The amount of magmatism and plume deflection depends on the initial geometric configuration, i.e., the distance of the plume from the edge. Plume buoyancy flux and temperature also control the amount of magmatism, and influence the style and extent of plume–EDC interaction. Finally, comparison of model predictions with observations reveals that the Canary plume may be significantly affected and deflected by EDC, accounting for widespread and coeval volcanic activity. Our work shows that many of the peculiar characteristics of eastern Atlantic volcanism are compatible with mantle plume theory once the effects of EDC on plume flow are considered. The existence of aviation subsidies can exacerbate congestion in airports that operate near their maximum threshold. One of the main operational issues in airports, that is, aircraft taxiing operations, could become more difficult and, therefore, produce negative effects on airport capacity management. Air carrier economies, touristic mobility (leisure travel), and the environment could also be negatively affected. Greenhouse gas emissions, passenger travel time, and air carriers' fuel costs, for example, might rise due to aircrafts' increased taxiing time. This paper seeks to analyse the impact of regional aviation subsidies for regional hub airports in the Canary Island air traffic network; specifically, the effect it has on airports' capacity in terms of LTO (landing and taking off) cycle delays and its repercussions for passenger travel time, air carrier economics, and the environment. Therefore, to quantify the extent that the increased traffic from subsidies cause airport ground operations to delay flights, the disturbance between aircraft categories in landing and taking off operations must be considered. The disturbance between aircrafts will be evaluated by employing a simple model of landing intervals considering two aircraft categories (i.e., ATRs-72, ATRs-42, and B737/A320 aircraft families). The above-mentioned methodology provides an approximation of the average processing rate for take-off using the ultimate capacity concept for a variety of aircrafts landing on a single runway of the airport. As a result, it must be noted that there is a potential economic and environmental impact associated with the implementation of the subsidy increase for residents' interisland travel and from the Canary Islands to the mainland. There is also a negative effect on runways for both airports due to the capacity constraints. These impacts, however, have to be balanced with the social and economic benefits that each regional inhabitant derives from the subsidy in terms of improvement of their mobility for any purpose. This special issue on The Nordic Tourists in the Atlantic Islands of Azores, Madeira and Canaries was prepared in 2012, when the economic crisis had started in 2008, with the aim to focus if Nordic tourists' flux in Atlantic Islands was common and persistent along the years, representing an important proportion of the tourists in these islands. Despite its importance, no research has yet analyzed this tourism flux in the Atlantic islands. This special issue focuses on Atlantic islands, aimed at understanding the role of Scandinavian Tourists in Atlantic Islands. The call for papers received 15 papers from which 6 were selected based on their quality. The selected papers were presented in a conference held in Azores by the Regional Observatory of Tourism from Azores to discuss the accepted papers on 29 April May 2012. This special issue contains papers that went through a revision process in the conference, and each paper was revised by two blind reviewers. Some papers had to be revised twice and the final result is presented here. The present paper can be located at the interface of translation studies, imagology and philological analysis of the sources of a literary text. We analyse a travel book by the German author Käthe Burchard entitled Unter kanarischem Himmel [Under the Canary Sky] (1909), with the aim of recovering and giving visibility to a text that has been ignored by the specialised bibliography on the history of the conquest of the Canary Islands. Furthermore, we aim to investigate the relationships that can be established between Burchard's work and oral and written sources that were not mentioned by the German author. Through a contrastive study of these sources, we show how this relationship is not merely a case of intertextuality, but a more than probable covert translation. Finally, by analysing the work of a woman, Burchard, who writes about a female figure, the Canarian indigenous Iballa, often compared to the controversial figure of Hernán Cortés's interpreter, La Malinche, we reflect on the role of translation as a discursive practice in the creation, consolidation and dissemination of certain images, identities (of women, of oppressed groups and hegemonic cultures) and gender discourses in given cultures. This paper's primary objective is to segment the online marketplace of the Canary Islands' museums by using different conversion funnel metrics. Little systematic research exists on digital user behaviour, and much less is known about how to segment cultural users with structured data from manually extracted and SEO software sources. With this aim in mind, we built a database with data related to the different phases of the conversion funnel of the museums to segment this online museum marketplace. In the findings, not only do we acknowledge the existence of different segments, but we also provide insight into the user's digital behaviour by considering different metrics from the different phases of the conversion model process (awareness, consideration, conversion and loyalty). The originality of this paper is multifold. Firstly, it estimates the potential optimisation of these websites to improve the digital marketing implemented by the museum sector of the Canary Islands. Secondly, it sheds light on what benchmarking tactics and statistics procedures can be followed to carry out a non-hierarchical segmentation with standardised and comparable data. Thirdly, it contributes to the literature of digital marketing by eclectically combining the conversion funnel model, benchmarking techniques and non-hierarchical segmentation procedures. Rockfalls are frequent and harmful phenomena occurring in mountain ranges, coastal cliffs, and slope cuts. Although several natural processes occur in their formation and triggering, rainfall is one of the most common causes. The prediction of rock failures is of social significance for civil protection purposes and can rely on the statistical analysis of past rainfall conditions that caused the failures. The paper describes the analysis of information on rainfall-induced rockfalls in Gran Canaria and Tenerife, Canary Islands (Spain). An analysis of the monthly rainfall versus the monthly distribution of rockfalls reveals that they are correlated for most of the year, except in summer, when other triggers act to induce collapses. National and regional catalogs with hourly and daily rainfall measurements are used to reconstruct the cumulated amount (E) and the duration (D) of the rainfall responsible for the rock failures. Adopting a consolidated statistical approach, new ED rainfall thresholds for possible rockfall occurrence and the associated uncertainties are calculated for the two test sites. As far as is known, this is the first attempt to predict this type of failure using the threshold approach. Using the rainfall information, a map of the mean annual rainfall is obtained for Gran Canaria and Tenerife, and it is used to assess the differences between the thresholds. The results of this study are expected to improve the ability to forecast rockfalls in the Canary Islands in view of implementing an early-warning system to mitigate the rockfall hazard and reduce the associated risk. Leadership provides a strategy to deal with intense competition and high customer expectations in the hotel industry. This paper analyses the ability of managers' transformational and authentic leadership to predict customer satisfaction. A sample of 18,944 customers and managers of eight hotels in the Canary Islands was used for the analysis. The data were collected using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire-6s, the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire and ReviewPro management software. The data were analysed to confirm the ability of transformational and authentic leadership to predict overall customer satisfaction. The results indicate that the transformational subscales of idealised influence and intellectual stimulation and the authentic subscales of relational transparency and balanced processing predict overall customer satisfaction. However, there are discrepancies between the results for self-managed service departments and outsourced service departments. This study provides a novel approach to scientific research, building upon previous studies of the effectiveness of both types of leadership, especially in relation to their impact on guest satisfaction and differences between departments. In the early 2000s, the Parliament of the Canary Islands passed a series of tourism moratoria to restrict the growth in tourism supply. Even though the effects of moratoria have been covered in the literature, there is little quantitative evidence about their economic impact on the destinations, particularly in relation to the goal of increasing the quality of the accommodation supply. In order to fill this gap, this paper employs both regression and computable general equilibrium (CGE) methods to estimate the economic impact of the increased 5-star capacity acquired by the Canary Islands during the three moratoria periods between 2003 and 2017. The regression results show that the successive moratoria had a significant impact on the 5-star hotel supply in the Islands, while the CGE model translates the extra capacity into a positive impact on social welfare, with output increases in the sectors that complement tourism activity. The paper presents the first record of a Chara connivens (Characeae) stand from Fuerteventura (Canary Islands, Spain). The species was previously recorded only on Tenerife and Lanzarote, mostly in marine and artificial habitats. Physicochemical parameters of water and morphological features of the thalli and plant community were analyzed. General habitat requirements of C. connivens populations located in Europe, North Africa, and South-West Asia were reviewed. The newly described stand was located in a natural rock crevice that was part of a riverbed in El Barranco de las Peñitas (Penitas Canyon). This habitat was unshaded and filled with brackish water. C. connivens co-occurred with Cladophora glomerata and Ruppia maritima. Our report on the presence of C. connivens in the Spanish territory of the Atlantic Ocean is the first in almost 40 years. The distribution of C. connivens and its plant associations on the Canary Archipelago are poorly explored, which is why this topic requires further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The second legacy catalog of Planck Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ) sources, hereafter PSZ2, provides the largest galaxy cluster sample selected by means of the SZ signature of the clusters in a full sky survey. In order to fully characterize this PSZ2 sample for cosmological studies, all the members should be validated and the physical properties of the clusters, including mass and redshift, should be derived. However, at the time of its publication, roughly 21% of the 1653 PSZ2 members had no known counterpart at other wavelengths. Aims. Here, we present the second and last year of observations of our optical follow-up program 128-MULTIPLE-16/15B (hereafter LP15), which has been developed with the aim of validating all the unidentified PSZ2 sources in the northern sky with declinations higher than −15° that have no correspondence in the first Planck catalog PSZ1. The description of the program and the first year of observations have been presented previously. Methods. The LP15 program was awarded 44 observing nights that were spread over two years with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), and the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), all at Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (La Palma). Following the same method as described previously, we performed deep optical imaging for more than 200 sources with the INT and spectroscopy for almost 100 sources with the TNG and GTC at the end of the LP15 program. We adopted robust confirmation criteria based on velocity dispersion and richness estimates for the final classification of the new galaxy clusters as the optical counterparts of the PSZ2 detections. Results. Here, we present the observations of the second year of LP15, as well as the final results of the program. The full LP15 sample comprises 190 previously unidentified PSZ2 sources. Of these, 106 objects were studied before, while the remaining sample (except for 6 candidates) has been completed in the second year and is discussed here. In addition to the LP15 sample, we here study 42 additional PSZ2 objects that were originally validated as real clusters because they matched a WISE or PSZ1 counterpart, but they had no measured spectroscopic redshift. In total, we confirm the optical counterparts for 81 PSZ2 sources after the full LP15 program, 55 of them with new spectroscopic information. Forty of these 81 clusters are presented in this paper. After the LP15 observational program the purity of the PSZ2 catalog has increased from 76.7% originally to 86.2%. In addition, we study the possible reasons for false detection, and we report a clear correlation between the number of unconfirmed sources and galactic thermal dust emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kudoid myxozoans have been reported causing serious chronic problems in marine fisheries, by reducing the market value of infected fish through pathological damage to the host musculature. We report here the overall prevalence of a Kudoa species in 84/277 (30.3%) fishes from 20 different species of high commercial value captured between October 2011 and December 2013 from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 34 commercial fishing area, near the coast of the Canary Islands (Spain). Macroscopic examination showed myxozoan-like cysts in skeletal muscle from 5 of the 20 fish species examined, with the following prevalences: Pagellus acarne (86.7%), Pagellus erythrinus (46.5%), Serranus cabrilla (27.8%), Spondyliosoma cantharus (19.4%), and Sarpa salpa (28.6%). Infection intensity was determined based on spore counts following muscle tissue digestion. Morphometric studies to characterize the species and DNA sequence analysis results suggest that these infections are attributable to a Kudoa species closely related to Kudoa trachuri. This paper reports the first study on a multivalvulidan species to be identified from the Canary Islands. Furthermore, this is the first report of Kudoa parasites in all of the hosts mentioned above, with the exception of P. acarne. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Improving the estimation of the power output of a wind farm enables greater integration of this type of energy source in electrical systems. The development of accurate models that represent the real operation of a wind farm is one way to attain this objective. A wind farm power curve model is proposed in this paper which is developed using artificial neural networks, and a study is undertaken of the influence on model performance when parameters such as the meteorological conditions (wind speed and direction) of areas other than the wind farm location are added as signals of the input layer of the neural network. Using such information could be of interest, either to study possible improvements that could be obtained in the performance of the original model, which uses exclusively the meteorological conditions of the area where the wind farm is located, or simply because no reliable meteorological data for the area of the wind farm are available. In the study developed it is deduced that the incorporation of meteorological data from an additional weather station other than that of the wind farm site can improve by up to 17.6% the performance of the original model. This paper explores the colonialities of trans/gender and the Canary Islands to interrogate the in/adequacy of critical theory as a tool applied to Global South issues. In both cases, critical theory is found to be lacking due to its compulsion to predetermine and essentialise relations, which undermines its capacity to engage with the multiplicitous im/possibilities of trans/gender and post/coloniality. In lieu of a critical approach, the authors each engage with relational ontologies that offer a more capacious relationship with their respective colonialities. In the case of trans/gender, agential realism offers Pasley a means to trace the entanglements, potentiating more response-able becomings. For Ramirez, te Ao Māori allows her to imagine a future reconfigured to account for the multiple tensions that co-constitute Canary Island relationships with colonisation. While trans/gender and the Canary Islands are perhaps not an obvious pairing, the im/possibilities offered by each are deeply entangled in colonisation and the ongoing reconfiguration of colonialities in the pursuit of more just worlds. This study addresses the imperative transition towards renewable energy for the powering of desalination technologies, focusing particularly on island contexts. The Canary Archipelago serves as a unique wind energy-desalination laboratory, with numerous experimental projects conducted since the late 1980s. The lessons learnt that are identified in this paper highlight the critical factors influencing project success or failure, including the modernization of desalination plants, the optimal selection of wind farm sites and turbine technology, adequate resources for operating and maintenance tasks, and optimal battery sizing to minimize system shutdowns. In this context, reverse osmosis emerges as the most advantageous technology for variable operating conditions. System interfaces between wind turbines and desalination units are also discussed and it is identified that further research is needed for mechanical or hydrostatic interface systems, while electrical interface systems suit low-medium water demand areas. Recommendations are given for system design and maintenance with the aim of providing valuable information for other island communities grappling with the water-energy nexus and climate change mitigation. Active hotspot volcanism is the surface expression of ongoing dynamic subsurface changes, such as the generation, transport, and stalling of magmas within the upper mantle and crust. Magmatic influx and migration affects local stress patterns in the crust and lithospheric mantle, which influences seismic anisotropy. A better understanding of those patterns helps improve robustness of models forecasting the likelihood of an eruption and prolonged seismicity, with detailed studies being required to observe the significant variations that can occur on small spatial and temporal scales. Here, we investigate seismic anisotropy before, during and after volcanic eruptions. We use local seismicity around El Hierro and La Palma, the two westernmost islands in the Canaries and sites of the most recent volcanic eruptions in the archipelago. We obtained 215 results in El Hierro during and after the 2011/2012 eruption with five three-component broadband seismic stations and 908 results around the 2021 eruption in La Palma with two three-component broadband stations. On La Palma, the majority of seismicity and splitting results are recorded during the eruption and simultaneous deflation of the island. Seismicity locations do not change significantly and fast shear wave polarisation direction is mostly constant, but some variation can be attributed to changes in the magmatic plumbing system. On El Hierro, the general radial pattern reflects stresses induced by the overall uplift of the island during multiple magma intrusion events. Temporal subsets reveal significant variations in location and depth of the events, as well as significant variations in fast polarisation direction caused by ongoing dynamic changes of under- and overpressurisation. An increase of results starting in 2018 hints towards renewed subsurface activity within deeper parts of the plumbing system, affecting the rate of overall seismicity but not any vertical movement of the island. Tourism represents a significant portion of the total economic activity of many islands throughout the world. This high level of tourist activity has a substantial impact on the energy and water demand. Previous research into smart energy systems on islands has demonstrated that there is significant potential for hotels to partake in energy demand shifting. However, the total potential of such shifting is influenced by variables such as air temperature and the level of occupancy of the hotels. The objective of this work is to quantify the sensitivity of these parameters and their impact on the overall effectiveness of demand shifting within hotels. The assessment contained within this paper utilises Mixed Integer Linear Programming to determine the dispatch of supply and demand on a case study hotel in the Canary Islands. The results show that highest reduction of fossil fuels is reached in a fully electrified hotel energy system. The potential is assumed as independent from weather and guests' behaviour. If only PV is used, demand shifting in only one hotel leads to a relative change of the degree of self-sufficiency of 1.6–1.8% but the results visualise a saturation effect for an already high share of renewable energies. • Demand response potential of touristic facilities through coupling electricity and thermal energy systems is shown. • Probabilistic time-series are used to quantify expected mean and deviation. • Both, integration of a trigeneration systems and a fully electrified energy system show highest potentials. • Saturation effect of demand response potential for high shares of renewable energy is observed. The vegetation of the Canary Islands is characterized by a large number of endemic species confined to different altitudinal levels. It can be assumed that these circumstances determine the characteristic features of the chemical composition of local beekeeping products, including propolis. We report, for the first time, the chemical composition of propolis from Tenerife (Canary Islands). The volatile emissions of three propolis samples collected from different apiaries are represented by 162 C1–C20 compounds, of which 144 were identified using the HS-SPME/GC-MS technique. The main group of volatiles, consisting of 72 compounds, is formed by terpenoids, which account for 42–68% of the total ion current (TIC) of the chromatograms. The next most numerous groups are formed by C6–C17 alkanes and alkenes (6–32% TIC) and aliphatic C3–C11 carbonyl compounds (7–20% TIC). The volatile emissions also contain C1–C6 aliphatic acids and C2–C8 alcohols, as well as their esters. Peaks of 138 organic C3–C34 compounds were recorded in the chromatograms of the ether extracts of the studied propolis. Terpene compounds form the most numerous group, but their number and content in different samples is within very wide limits (9–63% TIC), which is probably due to the origin of the samples from apiaries located at different altitudes. A peculiarity of the chemical composition of the extractive substances is the almost complete absence of phenylcarboxylic acids and flavonoids, characteristic of Apis mellifera propolis from different regions of Eurasia and North America. Aromatic compounds of propolis from Tenerife are represented by a group of nine isomeric furofuranoid lignans, as well as alkyl- and alkenyl-substituted derivatives of salicylic acid and resorcinol. This article estimates the inequality of opportunity (IO) for the Canary Islands archipelago, a European outermost region of seven islands, including two capital islands and five peripheral islands. To achieve this goal, a survey has been designed to cover a wide range of circumstances, including type of household, socioeconomic background, health status, type of school, family environment, and instilled values during childhood. This new database is one of the main contributions of the paper. For all of the Canary Islands, IO represents approximately 12.4% of total inequality, which is in line with the values found for the South European countries in related studies. However, when we distinguish by type of island, the IO in the peripheral islands accounts for almost 20% of total inequality, which is more in line with Latin American economies. Wikidata-IATEXT is a project in which was developed the curation and structuring of the bibliographic data of the scientific production by the researchers of the Research Institute of Text Analysis and Applications (IATEXT), part of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It was divided in two phases: the first was dedicated to the researchers and the second one to the publications. This project has two main goals. The first one is to show the Wikidata's possibilities as a database of bibliographic linked data, mainly from projects as WikiCite and visualization tools as Scholia, as well as the use of SPARQL and the Wikidata Query Service. The second is improve the presence of the scientific production in the field of the Humanities in the Canary Islands, using the IATEXT as the main subject. The first part of this paper address the importance of Wikidata as a corpus of linked and structured bibliographic data. Later it will focus on the Wikidata-IATEXT project: the motivation and the previous state, the methodology, the progress of both phases, as well as its results and, finally, the conclusions reached and possible use cases of this data. This paper integrates sedimentary, tectonic and volcanic geological processes inside a model of volcano-tectonic activity in oceanic intraplate domains related to rifted continental margins. The study case, the eastern Canary Basin (NE Atlantic), is one of the few places in the world where giant MDTs and Quaternary volcanic and hydrothermal edifices take place in intraplate domains. In this paper, we analyse how two structural systems (WNW-ESE and NNE-SSW) matching with the oceanic fabric control the location of volcanic systems, seafloor tectonic reliefs and subsequently the distribution of main sedimentary systems. Linear turbidite channels, debris flow lobes and the lateral continuity of structural and volcanic reliefs follow a WNW-ESE trend matching the tracks of the oceanic fracture zones. Furthermore, escarpments, anticline axes and volcanic ridges follow a NNE-SSW trend matching normal faults delimiting blocks of oceanic basement. The morpho-structural analysis of all the above geomorphological features shows evidence of a volcanic and tectonic activity from the middle–upper Miocene to the Lower–Middle Pleistocene spread over the whole of the eastern Canary Basin that reached the western Canary Islands. This reactivation changes the paradigm in the seamount province of Canary Islands reported inactive since Cretaceous. A tecto-sedimentary model is proposed for this period of time that can be applied in other intraplate domains of the world. A tectonic uplift in the study area with a thermal anomaly triggered volcanic and hydrothermal activity and the subsequent flank collapse and emplacement of mass transport deposits on the Western Canary Slope. Furthermore, this uplift reactivated the normal basement faults, both trending WNW-ESE and NNE-SSW, generating folds and faults that control the location of turbidite channels, escarpments, mass transport deposits and volcanic edifices. • Tecto-sedimentary model for intraplate oceanic settings: eastern Canary Basin. • Quaternary tectonics controls the sedimentary dynamic in the eastern Canary Basin. • Volcanic and tectonic reactivation since the Miocene until Quaternary. • Turbidite channels, MTD and volcanic cones are controlled by oceanic fracture zones. • Structural reliefs are controlled by deep faults delimiting oceanic basement blocks. A molecular survey of native and adventive psyllids in the central Macaronesian islands provides the first comprehensive phylogenetic assessment of the origins of the psyllid fauna of the Canary and Madeira archipelagos. We employ a maximum likelihood backbone constraint analysis to place the central Macaronesian taxa within the Psylloidea mitogenome phylogeny. The native psyllid fauna in these central Macaronesian islands results from an estimated 26 independent colonization events. Island host plants are predicted by host plants of continental relatives in nearly all cases and six plant genera have been colonized multiple times (Chamaecytisus, Convolvulus, Olea, Pistacia, Rhamnus, and Spartocytisus) from the continent. Post-colonization diversification varies from no further cladogenesis (18 events, represented by a single native taxon) to modest in situ diversification resulting in two to four native taxa and, surprisingly, given the diverse range of islands and habitats, only one substantial species radiation with more than four native species. Specificity to ancestral host plant genera or family is typically maintained during in situ diversification both within and among islands. Characterization of a recently discovered island radiation consisting of four species on Convolvulus floridus in the Canary Islands shows patterns and rates of diversification that reflect island topographic complexity and geological dynamism. Although modest in species diversity, this radiation is atypical in diversification on a single host plant species, but typical in the primary role of allopatry in the diversification process. The subtropical free troposphere plays a critical role in the radiative balance of the Earth. However, the complex interactions controlling moisture in this sensitive region and, in particular, the relative importance of long‐range transport compared to lower‐tropospheric mixing, remain unclear. This study uses the regional COSMO model equipped with stable water isotopes and passive water tracers to quantify the contributions of different evaporative sources to the moisture and its stable isotope signals in the eastern subtropical North Atlantic free troposphere. In summer, this region is characterized by two alternating large‐scale circulation regimes: (i) dry, isotopically depleted air from the upper‐level extratropics, and (ii) humid, enriched air advected from Northern Africa within the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) consisting of a mixture of moisture of diverse origin (tropical and extratropical North Atlantic, Africa, Europe, the Mediterranean). This diversity of moisture sources in regime (ii) arises from the convergent inflow at low levels of air from different neighbouring regions into the Saharan heat low (SHL), where it is mixed and injected by convective plumes into the large‐scale flow aloft, and thereafter expelled to the North Atlantic within the SAL. Remarkably, this regime is associated with a large contribution of moisture that evaporated from the North Atlantic, which makes a detour through the SHL and eventually reaches the 850–550 hPa layer above the Canaries. Moisture transport from Europe via the SHL to the same layer leads to the strongest enrichment in heavy isotopes (δ2H correlates most strongly with this tracer). The vertical profiles over the North Atlantic show increased humidity and δ2H and reduced static stability in the 850–550 hPa layer, and smaller cloud fraction in the boundary layer in regime (ii) compared to regime (i), highlighting the key role of moisture transport through the SHL in modulating the radiative balance in this region. Simple Summary: The rat lungworm, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, is the world's leading cause of eosinophilic meningitis in humans. It is an emerging zoonotic parasite endemic to Asia and the Pacific Islands that has spread to all continents except Antarctica. In the Canary Islands, its presence was first detected in 2010 on the island of Tenerife. Numerous studies demonstrated the high capacity of A. cantonensis to colonize new areas, especially its ability to parasitize a wide range of animals. Due to the similarity of the ecosystems that we can find between the islands that make up the Canary Archipelago and the great diversity of species of both vertebrates and terrestrial gastropods, the objective of this study was to analyze several species as possible hosts of A. cantonensis on other islands in the Canary Islands, with the use of molecular tools. The present study confirmed the presence of A. cantonensis in two mammalian species, Mus musculus and Felis catus, and in four terrestrial gastropod species, Limacus flavus, Milax gagates, Insulivitrina emmersoni, and Insulivitrina oromii. The presence of A. cantonensis implies a possible risk to humans and other animals, which justifies the need for control measures to control the possible risk of infection and, thus, prevent public health and veterinary problems. Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a metastrongyloid nematode and the etiologic agent of angiostrongyliasis, a disease characterized by eosinophilic meningitis. This emerging zoonotic parasite has undergone great expansion, including in some regions of Europe and America. In the Canary Islands, the parasite was first discovered parasitizing Rattus rattus on the island of Tenerife in 2010. To date, the distribution of this parasite in the Canary Islands has been restricted to the northern zone and the main cities of Tenerife. Using molecular tools for the sentinel species present in the Canary Islands, this study confirmed the presence of the nematode on two other islands in the Canary Archipelago: La Gomera and Gran Canaria. Furthermore, this emerging parasite was detected, besides in the common definitive host R. rattus, in wild Mus musculus and Felis catus and in four terrestrial gastropod species, Limacus flavus, Milax gagates, Insulivitrina emmersoni, and Insulivitrina oromii, two of them endemic to La Gomera, for the first time, increasing the number of non-definitive host species. This study reinforces the expansion character of A. cantonensis and highlights the importance of knowledge about sentinel species for identifying new transmission locations that help prevent and control the transmission of the parasite and, thus, prevent public health problems. Volcanic areas create spectacular landscapes that contain a great diversity of geoheritage. The study of this geoheritage enables us to inventory, characterise, protect and manage its geodiversity. The Canary Islands are a group of subtropical active volcanic oceanic islands with a great variety of magma types and eruption dynamics that give rise to a wide diversity of volcanic features and processes. The aim of this paper is to identify, for the first time, the diversity of volcanic geoheritage of the Canary Islands and to appraise the protection thereof. To this end, a geomorphological classification is proposed, taking into account the features and processes directly related to volcanism, such as those resulting from erosion and sedimentary processes. The main findings demonstrate that the volcanic geoheritage of the Canary Islands is extremely varied and that this geodiversity is safeguarded by regional, national and, international protection and management frameworks. Even so, and given the enormous pressure of coastal tourism on the coastlines of the islands, we believe that continuing efforts should be made to conserve and manage their volcanic and non-volcanic geoheritage, so that these places can continue to be enjoyed in the form of geotourism. Mid-plate upward mantle flow is a key component of global mantle convection, but its patterns are poorly constrained. Seismic anisotropy is the most direct way to infer mantle flow as well as melt distribution, yet the convection patterns associated with plume-like mantle upwelling are understudied due to limited seismic data coverage. Here, we investigate seismic anisotropy beneath the Madeira and Canary hotspots using a dense set of shear wave splitting observations and combining teleseismic and local events recorded by three-component broad-band and short-period seismic stations. Using a total of 26 stations in the Madeira archipelago and 43 stations around the Canary Islands, we obtain 655 high-quality measurements that reveal heterogeneous flow patterns. Although local event results are sparse around most islands, we can observe a small average of S -wave splitting times of 0.16 ± 0.01 s, which significantly increase with source depth beneath El Hierro (>20 km) and Tenerife (>38 km) up to 0.58 ± 0.01 and 0.47 ± 0.05 s. This suggests an influence of melt pocket orientation in magma reservoirs developed at uppermost-mantle depths. Likewise, anisotropy increases significantly beneath the islands with shield stage volcanism (up to 9.81 ± 1.78 per cent at El Hierro, western Canaries, against values up to 1.76 ± 0.73 per cent at Lanzarote, eastern Canaries). On average, teleseismic SKS -wave splitting delay times are large (2.19 ± 0.05 s), indicating sublithospheric mantle flow as the primary source for anisotropy in the region. In the Canaries, the western islands show significantly smaller average SKS delay times (1.93 ± 0.07 s) than the eastern ones (2.25 ± 0.11 s), which could be explained by destructive interference above the mantle upwelling. Despite complex patterns of fast polarization directions throughout both regions, some azimuthal pattern across close stations can be observed and related to present-day mantle flow and anisotropy frozen in the lithosphere since before 60 Ma. Additionally, we infer that the current presence of a mantle plume beneath the archipelagos leads to the associated complex, small-scale heterogeneous anisotropy observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims The Canary Islands have strong floristic affinities with the Mediterranean Basin. One of the most characteristic and diverse vegetation belts of the archipelago is the thermophilous woodland (between 200 and 900 m.a.s.l.). This thermophilous plant community consists of many non-endemic species shared with the Mediterranean Floristic Region together with Canarian endemic species. Consequently, phytogeographic studies have historically proposed the hypothesis of an origin of the Canarian thermophilous species following the establishment of the summer-dry mediterranean climate in the Mediterranean Basin around 2.8 million years ago. Methods Time-calibrated phylogenies for 39 plant groups including Canarian thermophilous species were primarily analysed to infer colonization times. In particular, we used 26 previously published phylogenies together with 13 new time-calibrated phylogenies (including newly generated plastid and nuclear DNA sequence data) to assess whether the time interval between stem and crown ages of Canarian thermophilous lineages postdates 2.8 Ma. For lineages postdating this time threshold, we additionally conducted ancestral area reconstructions to infer the potential source area for colonization. Key Results A total of 43 Canarian thermophilous lineages were identified from 39 plant groups. Both mediterranean (16) and pre-mediterranean (9) plant lineages were found. However, we failed to determine the temporal origin for 18 lineages because a stem–crown time interval overlaps with the 2.8-Ma threshold. The spatial origin of thermophilous lineages was also heterogeneous, including ancestral areas from the Mediterranean Basin (nine) and other regions (six). Conclusions Our findings reveal an unexpectedly heterogeneous origin of the Canarian thermophilous species in terms of colonization times and mainland source areas. A substantial proportion of the lineages arrived in the Canaries before the summer-dry climate was established in the Mediterranean Basin. The complex temporal and geographic origin of Canarian thermophilous species challenges the view of the Canary Islands (and Madeira) as a subregion within the Mediterranean Floristic Region. Summary: Bethencourtia Choisy (Compositae, Senecioneae) has three species and is dedicated to Jean IV de Béthencourt (1362—ca.1425/1426), who led the first successful military European expedition to conquer the Canary Islands. The botanical history of this Canary Island genus is reviewed, and its nomenclature is revisited. The generitype, Senecio palmensis C.Sm. = B. palmensis (C.Sm.) Choisy, is illustrated (t. 1058). The names S. palmensis and S. hermosae Pit. are lectotypified. Phylogenetic relationships, conservation status, systematics, phytochemistry, and ecogeographical patterns are discussed. In this work, a regional-scale strategy to characterize the radon activity levels in the Canary Islands (Spain) is described. The main objectives of this strategy consisted of (1) studying the likely relationship between radon concentration and lithology of the rock matrix through the lithological data of 247 samples from volcanic rocks of the Canary Islands and (2) implementing a series of monitoring sites in the form of boreholes and wells to study the evolution of radon-in-air activity on a daily to yearly timescale. We report significant changes in the 3He/4He ratio measured at the Dos Aguas CO2‐rich cold mineral spring (La Palma, Canary Islands) that represent early precursory signals of the 2021 Tajogaite eruption at Cumbre Vieja volcano. Air‐corrected 3He/4He ratio has an average value of 9.80 RA in the last 30 years (1991–2021). Helium isotope ratios higher than the average value were observed during the period 2008–2013 suggesting an input of 3He‐rich less‐degassed magma beneath La Palma lithosphere. Magma ascended in 2017–2018 toward another reservoir located beneath Cumbre Vieja at 10–15 km depth, causing detectable seismic swarms located between 15 and 25 km, followed in 2020 by additional inputs of 3He‐rich less‐degassed magma that intruded at depth. Finally, in 2021 the buoyancy of magma and the pressure of the exsolved gases overcame the lithospheric resistance and a volcanic eruption took place between 19 September and 13 December 2021. Aim: We explore the idea that most pre‐glacial non‐endemic Canarian flora became endemic to the archipelago by the extinction of its mainland populations during the late Pleistocene glaciations, implying that the extant non‐endemic flora is mostly post‐glacial: the 'late Pleistocene endemicity increase hypothesis'. Taxon: The native flora of the Canarian archipelago. Methods: We statistically compare the distributions of 2087 Canarian endemic and native non‐endemic plants across islands. We also carry out connectivity analyses using their dispersal paths, obtained by connecting all the islands of occurrence for each taxon. Results: While the distribution of the endemic flora is strongly L‐shaped (with a much higher proportion of Single‐Island Endemics than Multiple‐Island Endemics), that of the native non‐endemics is U‐shaped (i.e. similar prevalence of single‐island taxa and taxa distributed on all islands). The native non‐endemics have a significantly lower proportion of single‐island taxa and a higher proportion of widespread taxa than the endemics. Most dispersal paths in the endemics connect the central and western islands, whereas they are extended across all islands in the native non‐endemics. Main conclusions The contrasting distributional patterns of the endemics and the native non‐endemics support an outstanding role of species diversification in the endemic flora, but a still negligible influence of the insular selective and stochastic pressures (including extinction) in the native non‐endemic flora, arguably due to its recent origin. Our results suggest that the high endemicity levels of the extant Canarian flora can be explained by two complementary processes: (i) high diversification rates throughout the ontogeny of the archipelago, often from colonisers that attained a widespread distribution prior to speciation, and (ii) an 'endemicity increase' during the late Pleistocene glaciations, whereby most of the pre‐glacial non‐endemic Canarian flora became endemic due to the extinction of its mainland conspecific populations, thus emphasising the role of the Canaries as climatic refugia. In this research we make use of historical wind direction observations to assemble an instrumental upwelling intensity index (the so‐called Directional Upwelling Index [DUI]) for the coast of Northwest Africa between 26° and 33°N and from 1825 to 2014. The DUI is defined as the persistence of the alongshore winds at the coast and unlike other upwelling indices, it relies on observed wind direction solely, avoiding the suspected bias toward increasing wind speed of historical wind observations documented in previous research. We have found that between June and October, when the upwelling intensity in the area is at its seasonal maximum, the persistence of the north‐easterlies measured by the DUI is significantly related to the alongshore wind stress and subsequently with Sea Surface Temperature anomalies at the coast of NW Africa. The analysis of the DUI record does not display a consistent long‐term trend but an oscillatory behavior. At interannual time scales this variability can be linked to the changes in the strength and location of the subtropical north Atlantic high‐pressure center and at multidecadal scales, the upwelling seems mainly driven by the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability through the modulation exerted by this climatic pattern on the intensity of the Saharan low. Upwelled water is rich in nutrients, creating areas of paramount importance for fisheries. A long‐standing hypothesis contends that upwelling might be intensified because of global warming, but due to the impediments to quantify the upwelling intensity for long periods, the scientific community still debates whether the upwelling is changing. We have used historical wind observations taken aboard ships sailing along the coast of Northwest Africa to show that there, during the last two centuries, upwelling has not increased but it has oscillated synchronically with the temperature of the North Atlantic. Specimens of webspinners found on Fuerteventura Island (one of the Canary Islands) were provisionally identified as Embia cf. savignyi Westwood, 1837 (Embioptera: Embiidae). Embia savignyi is native to northeastern Africa and the population reported from the Canary Islands is introduced. The report provides location data, photographs of specimens, a description of cytogenetic characteristics, a DNA barcode, and a description of the morphological intrapopulation variability. The Canary Islands, an archipelago east of Morocco's Atlantic coast, present steep altitudinal gradients covering various climatic zones from hot deserts to subalpine Mediterranean, passing through fog-influenced cloud forests. Unlike the majority of the Canarian flora, Pinus canariensis C. Sm. ex DC. in Buch grow along most of these gradients, allowing the study of plant functioning in contrasting ecosystems. Here we assess the water sources (precipitation, fog) of P. canariensis and its physiological behavior in its different natural environments. We analyzed carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of water and organics from atmosphere, soil and different plant organs and tissues (including 10-year annual time series of tree-ring cellulose) of six sites from 480 to 1990 m above sea level on the Canary Island La Palma. We found a decreasing δ18O trend in source water that was overridden by an increasing δ18O trend in needle water, leaf assimilates and tree-ring cellulose with increasing altitude, suggesting site-specific tree physiological responses to relative humidity. Fog-influenced and fog-free sites showed similar δ13C values, suggesting photosynthetic activity to be limited by stomatal closure and irradiance at certain periods. In addition, we observed an 18O-depletion (fog-free and timberline sites) and 13C-depletion (fog-influenced and fog-free sites) in latewood compared with earlywood caused by seasonal differences in: (i) water uptake (i.e. deeper ground water during summer drought, fog water frequency and interception) and (ii) meteorological conditions (stem radial growth and latewood δ18O correlated with winter precipitation). In addition, we found evidence for foliar water uptake and strong isotopic gradients along the pine needle axis in water and assimilates. These gradients are likely the reason for an unexpected underestimation of pine needle water δ18O when applying standard leaf water δ18O models. Our results indicate that soil water availability and air humidity conditions are the main drivers of the physiological behavior of pine along the Canary Island's altitudinal gradients. Insular woodiness (IW), referring to the evolutionary transition from herbaceousness toward woodiness on islands, has arisen more than 30 times on the Canary Islands (Atlantic Ocean). One of the IW hypotheses suggests that drought has been a major driver of wood formation, but we do not know in which palaeoclimatic conditions the insular woody lineages originated. Therefore, we provided an updated review on the presence of IW on the Canaries, reviewed the palaeoclimate, and estimated the timing of origin of woodiness of 24 insular woody lineages that represent a large majority of the insular woody species diversity on the Canaries. Our single, broad‐scale dating analysis shows that woodiness in 60%–65% of the insular woody lineages studied originated within the last 3.2 Myr, during which Mediterranean seasonality (yearly summer droughts) became established on the Canaries. Consequently, our results are consistent with palaeoclimatic aridification as a potential driver of woodiness in a considerable proportion of the insular woody Canary Island lineages. The sub-alpine zones of oceanic islands are unique and dynamic ecosystems with high levels of endemism, making them particularly suitable model systems in which to investigate evolutionary and biogeographic processes. The sub-alpine flora of the Canary Islands is restricted to the islands of Tenerife and La Palma. Its origins are poorly understood. Echium wildpretii Hook.f. is an iconic species of the subalpine zones of these two islands, with distinct subspecies recognized on each island. This study examines patterns of genetic and morphological diversity in E. wildpretii to investigate the diversity and evolution of the lineage. Nine microsatellite markers were designed and used to investigate population genetic structure and patterns of gene flow within and between islands and populations. Morphological characters were assessed to test the distinctiveness of the two subspecies recognized. Strong genetic differentiation was observed between islands with higher genetic diversity on the younger island of La Palma than on Tenerife. Very low levels of inter-island gene flow were observed indicating that these taxa are reproductively isolated and evolving independently. Morphological analysis confirmed the distinctiveness of plants from the two islands. Given their genetic and morphological distinctiveness the taxa on Tenerife and La Palma merit recognition as distinct species. Higher genetic diversity in the La Palma species is consistent with an origin of the lineage on this island via upslope colonization, followed by dispersal to Tenerife where the plants show lower genetic diversity. Swells that reach the coast of the Canary Islands from northern latitudes are well studied and documented, but scientific literature on the arrival of swells from the southern hemisphere is very scarce. The effects of this type of wave can be appreciated in the south coast of the Canary Islands at certain times of the year. These waves have low significant height, but long periods. The Spanish public system for forecasting of the marine environment (SIMAR database) may not be replicating this type of swell accurately. For this reason, its effect may have been underestimated in the design and management of coastal infrastructures. The aim of this research is to study the frequency and features of swells arriving from the extratropical region of the southern hemisphere to the Canary Islands, an archipelago located in the subtropical North Atlantic. For this purpose, a systematic visual observation of the waves reaching the coast of the Canary Island of Tenerife from the south, and comparisons with wave models and registers of buoys were carried out. New IRSL ages of eolianites close to Muñique (Lanzarote) demonstrate the influence of millennial scale climatic variability on the sedimentary dynamics on the Canary Islands during the last glacial cycle. The repetitive succession of interstadial and stadial climatic conditions formed multiple sequences of eolian deposits, each in general comprising three depositional types. DepoType 1 and DepoType 2 consist mainly of marine biogenic carbonate detritus with small amounts of dust from the Sahara representing interstadial conditions. DepoType 2 compared to DepoType 1 is characterized by larger amounts of land snails and calcified brood cells. A DepoType 3 rich in dust from African subtropical/tropical Latisols terminates a sequence. IRSL dating on DepoType 3 type deposits clearly shows that these were deposited during Heinrich Events under stadial conditions. The stadial cooling of the North Atlantic Ocean caused a southern shift of climate zones that culminated during Heinrich Events when the arctic climate reaches its most southerly extent. As a consequence, atmospheric changes led to massive dust supply from the then-dry Sahel.
