With a growing population of about 7.8 billion, humans are generating tons of waste in the form of non-biodegradable plastics on a daily basis that ends up in landfills and oceans. The introduction of packaging has been a blessing to mankind by facilitating the ease of convenience in transportation, delivery and general usage. The downside, however, is that majority of the packaging currently available is harmful to the environment and takes thousands of years to decay. This paper discusses the use of chitosan from shrimp shells and other marine animals' exoskeleton waste in food packaging industries. Chitosan extracted from marine organisms is modulated in the form of packaging material. Compared to conventional packaging, chitosan films are 73.4% biodegradable in soil under laboratory conditions whereas 100% degraded in an open field. Chitosan with metal oxides, essential oils, natural extracts, proteins and other polymers show enhanced tensile strength, water vapor permeability, oxygen and ultraviolet barrier. Chitosan and composite film show antimicrobial activity against gram positive and negative bacteria. Comparative approaches on environmental impacts between conventional plastics and chitosan films are enlightened, thereby highlighting the importance of natural polymers as packaging films that are considered economic based on the addition of additives. Approximately 50% of global plastic wastes are produced from plastic packaging, a substantial amount of which is disposed of within a few minutes of its use. Although many plastic types are designed for single use, they are not always disposable. It is now widely acknowledged that the production and disposal of plastics have led to a plethora of negative consequences, including the contamination of both groundwater and soil resources and the deterioration of human health. The undeniable impact of excessive plastic manufacturing and waste generation on the global plastic pollution crisis has been well documented. Therefore, degradable polymers are a crucial solution to the problem of the non-degradation of plastic wastes. The disadvantage of degradable polymers is their high cost, so blending them with natural polymers will reduce the cost of final products and maximize their degradation rate, making degradable polymers competitive with industrial polymers that are currently in use daily. In this work, we will delineate various degradable polymers, including polycaprolactone, starch, and cellulose. Furthermore, we will elucidate several aspects of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and its blends with natural polymers to show the effects of adding natural polymers on PVA properties. This paper will study cost-effective and ecologically acceptable polymers by combining inexpensive natural polymers with readily accessible biodegradable polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The synthesis of conventional plastics has increased tremendously in the last decades due to rapid industrialization, population growth, and advancement in the use of modern technologies. However, overuse of these fossil fuel-based plastics has resulted in serious environmental and health hazards by causing pollution, global warming, etc. Therefore, the use of microalgae as a feedstock is a promising, green, and sustainable approach for the production of biobased plastics. Various biopolymers, such as polyhydroxybutyrate, polyurethane, polylactic acid, cellulose-based polymers, starch-based polymers, and protein-based polymers, can be produced from different strains of microalgae under varying culture conditions. Different techniques, including genetic engineering, metabolic engineering, the use of photobioreactors, response surface methodology, and artificial intelligence, are used to alter and improve microalgae stocks for the commercial synthesis of bioplastics at lower costs. In comparison to conventional plastics, these biobased plastics are biodegradable, biocompatible, recyclable, non-toxic, eco-friendly, and sustainable, with robust mechanical and thermoplastic properties. In addition, the bioplastics are suitable for a plethora of applications in the agriculture, construction, healthcare, electrical and electronics, and packaging industries. Thus, this review focuses on techniques for the production of biopolymers and bioplastics from microalgae. In addition, it discusses innovative and efficient strategies for large-scale bioplastic production while also providing insights into the life cycle assessment, end-of-life, and applications of bioplastics. This comprehensive review addresses the vital environmental concerns posed by conventional petroleum-based plastics, particularly in the context of the packaging industry's extensive reliance on these materials. As nearly 99% of plastics originate from non-renewable petrochemical sources and their non-biodegradable nature leads to widespread waste accumulation and harmful emissions upon disposal, the need for sustainable alternatives has become paramount. This paper explores the escalating environmental and health repercussions linked to traditional plastics, underscored by global initiatives, including restrictions on single-use plastics, aimed at mitigating these challenges. In response, the paper highlights the growing interest in environmental friendly biopolymers, which can be sourced from renewable biological materials or synthesized from biopolymers such as starch, casein etc. The classification of biopolymers into three primary categories; natural biopolymers, microbial fermentation-derived biopolymers, and polymerized monomers from biomass is comprehensively examined. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the pivotal role of biopolymer properties, such as barrier characteristics, mechanical strength, heat resistance, biodegradability, flexibility, food contact safety, and cost-effectiveness, in determining their suitability for packaging applications. It also stresses the importance of conducting life cycle assessment (LCA) to holistically evaluate the environmental sustainability of biopolymers. This review highlights the potential of integrating biopolymers into packaging materials as a promising avenue to reduce the adverse environmental impact of traditional plastic production. These biodegradable materials, with their diverse properties and renewability, offer a sustainable approach to mitigating plastic waste and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Polymeric materials undergo degradation when exposed to outdoor conditions due to the synergistic effects of sunlight, air, heat, and moisture. The degradation can lead to a decline in mechanical properties, fading, surface cracking, and haziness, attributed to the cleavage of the polymer chains and oxidation reactions. Accelerated weathering testing is a useful technique to evaluate the comparative photodegradation of materials within a reasonable timeframe. This review gives an overview of the different degradation mechanisms occurring in conventional plastics and bio-based materials. Case studies on accelerated weathering and its effect on the mechanical properties of conventional plastics and biocomposites are discussed. Different techniques for analysing volatile organic emissions (VOCs) have been summarized and studies highlighting the characterization of VOCs from aged plastics and biocomposites after aging have been cited. Non-degradable plastics of petrochemical origin are a contemporary problem of society. Due to the large amount of plastic waste, there are problems with their disposal or storage, where the most common types of plastic waste are disposable tableware, bags, packaging, bottles, and containers, and not all of them can be recycled. Due to growing ecological awareness, interest in the topics of biodegradable materials suitable for disposable items has begun to reduce the consumption of non-degradable plastics. An example of such materials are biodegradable biopolymers and their derivatives, which can be used to create the so-called bioplastics and biopolymer blends. In this article, gelatine blends modified with polysaccharides (e.g., agarose or carrageenan) were created and tested in order to obtain a stable biopolymer coating. Various techniques were used to characterize the resulting bioplastics, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)/differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), contact angle measurements, and surface energy characterization. The influence of thermal and microbiological degradation on the properties of the blends was also investigated. From the analysis, it can be observed that the addition of agarose increased the hardness of the mixture by 27% compared to the control sample without the addition of polysaccharides. In addition, there was an increase in the surface energy (24%), softening point (15%), and glass transition temperature (14%) compared to the control sample. The addition of starch to the gelatine matrix increased the softening point by 15% and the glass transition temperature by 6%. After aging, both compounds showed an increase in hardness of 26% and a decrease in tensile strength of 60%. This offers an opportunity as application materials in the form of biopolymer coatings, dietary supplements, skin care products, short-term and single-contact decorative elements, food, medical, floriculture, and decorative industries. Due to the extensive application of petroleum-based plastics as packaging materials and problems related to their degradation/recycling, developing new solutions in the field of novel biopolymer-based materials has become imperative. Natural substitutes for synthetic polymers (starch, cellulose, chitosan) require modifications that enable their processing and provide them with additional properties (i.e., mechanical strength, controlled biodeterioration, antimicrobial and antioxidative activity). The antioxidant activity of natural packaging materials still requires further investigation. In this research paper, novel materials used for packaging perishable food susceptible to oxidizing agents were designed from potato starch (NS) reinforced with antioxidants such as dialdehyde starch (DS) and caffeic acid (CA)/quinic acid (QA). The use of spectroscopic techniques (ATR-FTIR, Raman) and X-ray diffraction allowed the examination of the chemical structure and arrangement of the blend and confirmed the component interactions. The film surface was examined by AFM. DS, functioning as a cross-linker, enhanced the film barrier as well as the mechanical and thermal properties, and it promoted starch amorphization when blended with other antioxidants. The antioxidant activity of caffeic acid was greater than that of quinic acid. Dialdehyde starch improves elasticity, whereas acids (particularly caffeic acid) influence film stiffness. Cellulose is the most attractive renewable natural polymer, carrying off a 211 billion USD market size that entered the plastic world for industrial application. However, the extraction of cellulose forms (micro/nano) in an economical manner is still challenging for researchers who have been trying different cellulose-based sources and methods. Henceforth, the present study focused on extracting cellulose microfibers (CMFs) from agro biomass to mitigate the cost of satisfying industrial demands. The waste fallen dried leaves were used to extract micro cellulose through alkaline peroxide treatment and studied the essential characteristics like morphology, spectral and crystallinity, and CMFs having 45.8 µm size with rough morphology and the spectral peak of 3339 cm−1, and 2890 cm−1 corresponding to hydrogen bond O–H, and C–H of cellulose respectively. Further, the various % (5–15) of CMFs were reinforced to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to prepare CMFs/PVA composites through the solution casting method. The experimental results showed that the composites having chemical interaction bond at 3260 cm−1 and 2θ = 19.6◦ diffraction peak. The optimized % of CMFs showing tensile strength 80.37 MPa and 2.51 GPa and decreased 9.37% elongation at break. CMFs loading significantly enhanced biodegradation by about 21.44%. This improvement in biodegradation highlights the potential environmental benefits of utilizing CMFs in plastic film production. There are several physical and chemical methods for synthesizing nanomaterials, while the most appropriate techniques involve using green chemistry and eco-friendly material. Recently, green synthesized materials for different applications have gained attention as a result of their environmental friendliness and cost-effectiveness. Applying green synthesized nanoparticles (NPS) in food packaging has been extensively investigated. Biopolymers require filler to enhance the optical, barrier, thermal, antimicrobial, and mechanical properties of packaging. Biopolymer packaging incorporated with green synthesized NPs is expected to simultaneously enhance performance while reducing environmental damage. The current review article focuses on biopolymer films with bio (green)-synthesized nanomaterials and their effectiveness in reducing the negative environmental implications of synthetic packaging. It also covers the general concepts of green synthesis of NPs, their production methods, their performance, and characterization, and discusses the potential, performance and recent developments of bio-nanocomposite films/coatings in biodegradable food packaging. This study assessed bioplastics made from different mass proportions of commercial chitosan and banana plant pseudostem-derived hemicelluloses. The bioplastics were prepared by the casting method and characterized for moisture content, water solubility, opacity, water absorption, tensile strength, and thermogravimetric properties. The formulations with hemicelluloses addition showed higher moisture content and water solubility than the chitosan-only bioplastic, the maximum values of these properties (22.3 and 22.4%) were achieved when hemicelluloses were added at the proportion of 10 and 5%, respectively. A positive linear correlation (r = 0.86) was found between added hemicelluloses and opacity, with the highest opacity (1.95 mm−1) achieved in the formulation with the maximum hemicellulose incorporation. The bioplastics containing hemicelluloses exhibited lower swelling (water absorption) than that made only of chitosan, with the formulation featuring the highest hemicelluloses content showed the lowest swelling (229.2%). A negative linear correlation (r = 0.95) was observed between added hemicelluloses and swelling values. The formulation with the highest hemicelluloses content demonstrated statistically significant differences and exhibited the highest tensile strength (18.7 MPa) and Young's modulus (66.1 MPa). Thermogravimetric analysis revealed four stages of mass loss in the bioplastics. Hemicelluloses addition decreased the temperature at maximum mass loss, and the formulation with the lowest hemicelluloses content showed a higher degradation rate than the others. Cellulose is an abundant natural polymer and is thus promising for enforcing biobased plastics. A broader application of cellulose fibers as a filler in polymer composites is limited because of their hydrophilicity and hygroscopicity. The recent scientific literature on plasma methods for the hydrophobization of cellulose materials is reviewed and critically evaluated. All authors focused on the application of plasmas sustained in fluorine or silicon-containing gases, particularly tetrafluoromethane, and hexamethyldisiloxane. The cellulose materials should be pre-treated with another plasma (typically oxygen) for better adhesion of the silicon-containing hydrophobic coating. In contrast, deposition of fluorine-containing coatings does not require pre-treatment, which is explained by mild etching of the cellulose upon treatment with F atoms and ions. The discrepancy between the results reported by different authors is explained by details in the gas phase and surface kinetics, including the heating of samples due to exothermic surface reactions, desorption of water vapor, competition between etching and deposition, the influence of plasma radiation, and formation of dusty plasma. [Display omitted] Nanoparticle addition can expand bioplastic use, as the resultant nanocomposite features e.g., improved mechanical properties. It is generally hypothesised that the nanoparticle-polymer interaction strength is pivotal to reduce polymer dynamics within the interphasial region and beyond. Translating nanoscale phenomena to bulk properties is challenging, as traditional techniques that probe interphasial dynamics are limited to well-dispersed systems. Laser speckle imaging (LSI) enabled us to probe interphasial nanoscale dynamics of samples containing aggregated nanoparticles. We relate these LSI-derived relaxation times to bulk rheological properties at a micro scale. Nanocomposites with well-dispersed PDMS-coated titanium dioxide nanoparticles of ∼100 nm showed higher viscosities than nanocomposites containing aggregated PVP- and PAA-coated nanoparticles of 200–2000 nm. Within the interphasial region, nanoparticle addition increased relaxation times by a factor 101–102, reaching ultraslow relaxations of ∼103 s. While the viscosity increased upon nanoparticle loading, interphasial relaxation times plateaued at 5 wt% for nanocomposites containing well-dispersed nanoparticles and 10 wt% for nanocomposites containing aggregated nanoparticles. Likely, interphasial regions between nanoparticles interact, which is more prominent in systems with well-dispersed nanoparticles and at higher loadings. Our results highlight that, contrary to general belief, nanoparticle dispersion seems of greater importance for mechanical reinforcement than the interaction between polymer and particle. Fossil fuels are a major source of energy worldwide and serve as raw materials for the production of plastics. However, they have disadvantages such as uneven distribution, price instability, limited availability, and environmental impact. Consequently, there is a need to find alternatives to fossil fuels for both energy and polymer production in the short term. This review focuses on the synthesis of poly(hydroxyalkanoate)s (PHAs), a type of biopolymer, using different bioethanol stream wastes. PHAs exhibit properties comparable to petroleum-based plastics, making them promising replacements. There has been a significant increase in research studies exploring alternatives to fossil fuels and synthetic polymers, as evidenced by the growing number of publications. While biopolymers currently account for only 1% of global polymer production derived from petroleum, the PHA industry is experiencing rapid growth. The market value of PHAs was estimated at $ 168.9 million in 2020, and it is projected to reach $ 440 million by 2031, indicating a compound annual growth rate of 9.2%. The production of this biopolymer is already contributing to an expanding industrial value chain, which is expected to further growth with increased availability of commercial PHAs. Textile production is a major component of the global industry, with sales of over USD 450 billion and estimations of an 84% increase in their demand in the next 20 years. In recent decades, protective and smart textiles have played important roles in the social economy and attracted widespread popularity thanks to their wide spectrum of applications with properties, such as antimicrobial, water-repellent, UV, chemical, and thermal protection. Towards the sustainable manufacturing of smart textiles, biodegradable, recycled, and bio-based plastics are used as alternative raw materials for fabric and yarn production using a wide variety of techniques. While conventional techniques present several drawbacks, nanofibers produced through electrospinning have superior structural properties. Electrospinning is an innovative method for fiber production based on the use of electrostatic force to create charged threads of polymer solutions. Electrospinning shows great potential since it provides control of the size, porosity, and mechanical resistance of the fibers. This review summarizes the advances in the rapidly evolving field of the production of nanofibers for application in smart and protective textiles using electrospinning and environmentally friendly polymers as raw materials, and provides research directions for optimized smart fibers in the future. Recent advances in the fabrication of neuromorphic electronic devices using biomaterials have received increasing attention for their prospect in biologically compatible and "green" electronic devices. Here, we proposed a novel electric-double-layer (EDL) synaptic transistor gated with Li-doped natural gelatin membranes, demonstrating larger capacitance at low frequency and extremely strong electrostatic modulation behavior. Experimental results have shown that a concentration of 2 wt. % Li-doping can obtain better electrical performance of EDL synaptic transistor. Ion/Ioff of 4.86 × 105 and threshold voltage of 0.68 V were obtained. Meanwhile, some important synaptic functions such as excitatory postsynaptic current, paired-pulse facilitation, and high-pass filtering characteristic have been successfully implemented. As a result, it can be inferred that the proposed gelatin-based natural polymer EDL electrolyte has demonstrated potential applications in "green" neuromorphic platforms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to develop a bioplastic based on hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) and polyvinilpyrrolidone (PVP) which is applied as packaging materials. The effect of incorporation of PVP into HEC on the physicochemical properties of its blend films are investigated. The FTIR and DSC analysis denote that incorporation of PVP induce the intermolecular hydrogen bonds to occur more intensely. The XRD diffractograms indicate that the incorporation of PVP reduces the crystallinity of the film. The mechanical properties of the films become greater as the PVP content increases, and the optimum composition of HEC/PVP is at 5:3 mass ratio with a tensile strength of 34.8±3.4 MPa; elongation at break 104.3±4.9 %; and an elastic modulus of 0.10±0.02 GPa. The SEM and DSC analysis signify an excellent compatibility and miscibility between HEC and PVP. The incorporation of PVP increase the transparency and hydrophilicity of the film. The water vapor transmission rate of the films is relatively unchanged due to the incorporation of PVP. The TGA and DSC analysis reveal that the incorporation of PVP increases the thermal stability and the glass transition temperature of the film. Measures to endorse the adoption of eco-friendly biodegradable plastics as a response to the scale of plastic pollution has created a demand for innovative products from materials from Nature. Ionic liquids (ILs) have the ability to disrupt the hydrogen bonding network of biopolymers, increase the mobility of biopolymer chains, reduce friction, and produce materials with various morphologies and mechanical properties. Due to these qualities, ILs are considered ideal for plasticizing biopolymers, enabling them to meet a wide range of specifications for biopolymeric materials. This mini-review discusses the effect of different IL-plasticizers on the processing, tensile strength, and elasticity of materials made from various biopolymers (e.g., starch, chitosan, alginate, cellulose), and specifically covers IL-plasticized packaging materials and materials for biomedical and electrochemical applications. The consumption of synthetic, non-biodegradable polymer plastics has drawn attention to growing environmental concerns, prompting the development of other materials, particularly bio-based materials. Biopolymer-based biocomposite materials are plasticized to improve their ductility. In this study, five distinct weight ratios of biopolymers (PA/EOO), 90 wt.%, 80 wt.%, 70 wt.%, 60 wt.%, and 50 wt.% were employed as plasticizers for poly-lactic acid (PA) in a fluid molding process. The mechanical, thermal stability, and morphological characteristics of the blends were each examined using a viscometer measurement (R.V.), tensile properties (TP), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). All composite materials (PA/EOO) mixtures show notable improvements in mechanical properties and excellent thermal stability when compared to pure PA. The maximum PA/EOO elongation at break was around 213 % when the PA/EOO mix was 80 wt %. Attractive morphological results from composite materials (PA/EOO) blends showed that EOO was compatible with PA and that the resulting composite material (PA/EOO) was thought to be an ecologically beneficial mixture because it contained vegetable oil. Fucoidans are promising sulfated polysaccharides isolated from marine sources that have piqued the interest of scientists in recent years due to their widespread use as a bioactive substance. Bioactive coatings and films, unsurprisingly, have seized these substances to create novel, culinary, therapeutic, and diagnostic bioactive nanomaterials. The applications of fucoidan and its composite nanomaterials have a wide variety of food as well as pharmacological properties, including anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-thrombic, anti-coagulant, immunoregulatory, and anti-viral properties. Blends of fucoidan with other biopolymers such as chitosan, alginate, curdlan, starch, etc., have shown promising coating and film-forming capabilities. A blending of biopolymers is a recommended approach to improve their anticipated properties. This review focuses on the fundamental knowledge and current development of fucoidan, fucoidan-based composite material for bioactive coatings and films, and their biological properties. In this article, fucoidan-based edible bioactive coatings and films expressed excellent mechanical strength that can prolong the shelf-life of food products and maintain their biodegradability. Additionally, these coatings and films showed numerous applications in the biomedical field and contribute to the economy. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), due to their remarkable biodegradability, biocompatibility, and favorable physical and chemical properties, are tested for applications in the agricultural, industrial, and medical fields in place of conventional plastic. Sustainable microbial PHA production is a challenge because of the economic aspects accrued due to the cost-effective substrates and downstream processing. Different approaches are adopted to circumvent the high economic price of PHA production by co-production, employing recombinant strain, mixed cultures, and low-cost feedstock. The review focuses on the co-production of intracellular microbial PHA with an extracellular value-added product. The present review highlights the feasibility of other bio-based products from the feedstock to offset the cost of PHA production with emphasis on another viable option. The paper discusses the recent progress in the simultaneous production of PHA with exopolysaccharides, pigments, enzymes, bio-surfactants, biofuels which primarily fulfill the criteria of higher yield of PHA, and another high-value product that can be achieved. This approach not only maximizes resource utilization but also provides opportunities for the development of a wide range of sustainable bio-based products to improve the overall feasibility of the process. Furthermore, the introduction of biocomposites, resulting from the amalgamation of biopolymers with active biomolecules, fortifies barrier properties, thus shielding bread from moisture, oxygen, and external influences. The review also addresses the associated challenges and opportunities in utilizing biobased materials for bread packaging, accentuating the ongoing requirement for research and innovation to create advanced materials that ensure product integrity while diminishing the environmental footprint. This review presents a comprehensive update of the biopolymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), emphasizing its production, properties, and applications. The overall biosynthesis pathway of PHBV is explored in detail, highlighting recent advances in production techniques. The inherent physicochemical properties of PHBV, along with its degradation behavior, are discussed in detail. This review also explores various blends and composites of PHBV, demonstrating their potential for a range of applications. Energy can be extracted from waste by chemical and biological means. There are many pathways involved in the conversion of complex carbon sources to industrially valuable products. Exploring valorization with the concept of green chemistry, focusing on transforming waste with a more environmentally compassionate product has become the new ideology. Especially efficient utilization of industrial discard as renewable feedstocks in the production of eco-friendly products are upcoming technology. The production of one such eco-friendly material, bioplastics polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) is discussed in this review. PHAs are naturally occurring polymers amongst various organisms and are produced intracellularly by bacterial fermentation. PHAs belong to a polyester family and, hence potentially replace hydrocarbon-based conventional polymers. Bacteria for PHA production can be grown on various renewable waste feedstocks. This process not only eliminates the waste it adds value to it. This review provides insight into the production of PHA from the feedstocks. The use of natural polymers has increased due to concern about environmental pollution caused by plastics and emerging pollutants from fossil fuels. In this context, polysaccharides from macroalgae and microalgae arise as natural and abundant resources for various biological, biomedical, and food applications. Different nanomaterials are produced from these polysaccharides to act as effective carriers in the food and pharmaceutical industry: drug and nutrient carriers, active compound encapsulation, and delivery of therapeutic agents to tumor tissues. Polysaccharides-based nanomaterials applied as functional ingredients incorporated into foods can improve texture properties and decrease the caloric density of food products. These nanostructures also present the potential for developing food packaging with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. In addition, polysaccharides-based nanomaterials are biocompatible, biodegradable, and safe for medical practices to prevent and manage various chronic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. In this sense, this review article addresses the use of algal polysaccharides for manufacturing nanomaterials and their potential applications in food and biomedical areas. In addition, the paper discusses the general aspects of algae as a source of polysaccharides, the nanomaterials produced from these polymers, as well as recent studies and the potential use of algal polysaccharides for industries. Plastics have been produced for over a century, but definitive evidence of complete plastic biodegradation in different habitats, particularly freshwater ecosystems, is still missing. Using 13C‐labelled polyethylene microplastics (PE‐MP) and stable isotope analysis of produced gas and microbial membrane lipids, we determined the biodegradation rate and fate of carbon in PE‐MP in different freshwater types. The biodegradation rate in the humic‐lake waters was much higher (0.45% ± 0.21% per year) than in the clear‐lake waters (0.07% ± 0.06% per year) or the artificial freshwater medium (0.02% ± 0.02% per year). Complete biodegradation of PE‐MP was calculated to last 100–200 years in humic‐lake waters, 300–4000 years in clear‐lake waters, and 2000–20,000 years in the artificial freshwater medium. The concentration of 18:1ω7, characteristic phospholipid fatty acid in Alpha‐ and Gammaproteobacteria, was a predictor of faster biodegradation of PE. Uncultured Acetobacteraceae and Comamonadaceae among Alpha‐ and Gammaproteobacteria, respectively, were major bacteria related to the biodegradation of PE‐MP. Biodegradable polymers are an important part of the solution toolbox to achieve circularity in the plastic economy and overcome negative impacts of a linear plastic economy. Biodegradable polymers need to excel not only on a mechanical performance level in the application to fulfill their function during the use phase but also on a biodegradation performance level after use. The biodegradation performance is tailored to the application and the receiving environment of the polymer product after use, which can be both engineered systems (e.g., compost, anaerobic digestors, wastewater treatment plants) and natural systems (e.g., soils, freshwater, or marine environments). This chapter addresses key aspects of polymer biodegradability and biodegradation in both natural and engineered systems with the goal to advance a more holistic view on the topic and, thereby, provide guidance for all stakeholders working on developing, testing, and regulating biodegradable polymers. These aspects include definitions of biodegradability and biodegradation, elucidating polymer- and environmental factors that control the biodegradation process, a discussion of the analytical chemistry of polymer biodegradation, polymer biodegradability testing and certification, as well as a brief overview of research needs. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biodegradable polymers with immense potential in addressing the global plastic pollution crisis and advancing sustainable bioplastics production. Among the various microbes known for PHA production, extremophilic bacteria possess unique capabilities to thrive under extreme conditions, making them attractive candidates for PHA synthesis. Furthermore, the utilization of renewable feedstocks for PHA production aligns with the growing demand for sustainable bioplastic alternatives. A diverse range of extremophilic bacteria, especially halophiles and thermophiles, has provided cost-competitive platforms for producing customized PHA polymers. Extremophilic bacteria offer unique advantages over mesophiles due to their contamination resistance, high cell density growth, and unique culture conditions. The current status of Halomonas spp. as a chassis further allows exploration of metabolic engineering approaches to overcome the challenges associated with current industrial biotechnology. This article especially focuses on extremophilic bacteria and explores recent advances in utilizing renewable feedstocks such as lignocellulosic biomass, agro-industrial residues, and waste streams for PHA production. The integration of biorefinery concepts and circular economy principles in PHA manufacturing is also examined. This review is an attempt to provide an understanding of renewable substrates as feedstocks and emerging trends in PHA production by extremophilic bacteria. It underscores the pivotal role of extremophiles and sustainable feedstock sources in advancing the feasibility and eco-friendliness of PHAs as a promising biopolymer alternative. Quantification and characterization of microplastics, synthetic polymers less than 5 mm in diameter, requires extraction methods that can reduce non-plastic debris without loss or alteration of the polymers. Nitric acid has been used to extract plastic particles from zooplankton and other biota because it completely digests tissue and exoskeletons, thus reducing interferences. While the impact of acid digestion protocols on several polymers has been demonstrated, advice for quantifying microplastic and interpreting their spectra following nitric acid digestion is lacking. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and/or Raman spectroscopy was performed on plastics from > 50 common consumer products (including a variety of textiles) pre- and post-nitric acid treatment. The percent match and assigned polymer were tabulated to compare the accuracy of spectral identification before and after nitric acid digestion via two open spectral analysis software. Nylon-66, polyoxymethylene, polyurethane, polyisoprene, nitrile rubber, and polymethyl methacrylate had ≥ 90% mass loss in nitric acid. Other less-impacted polymers changed color, morphology, and/or size following digestion. Thus, using nitric acid digestion for microplastic extraction can impact our understanding of the particle sizes and morphologies ingested in situ. Spectral analysis results were compiled to understand how often (1) the best-hit matches were correct (30–60% of spectra), (2) the best-hit matches exceeding the (arbitrary) threshold of 65% match were correct (53–78% of spectra), and (3) the best-hit matches for anthropogenic polymers were incorrectly identified as natural polymers (12–15% of spectra). It is undeniable that suitable packaging will extend the shelf life of the food. The packaging industry has had to renew and innovate in a world where consumers are increasingly environmentally conscious in order to deal with the impact of the production of petroleum-derived plastics and the management of the waste generated by them. In this way, the use of biopolymers has been proposed, mainly those produced from renewable sources and with biodegradability and/or compostability properties. However, these types of materials are more expensive and do not have the same performance as petroleum-derived materials. Besides, the technologies for film preparation are not adapted for these materials. Therefore, new technologies must be studied and implemented to make the packaging industry a sustainable industry. Recently, non-solvent phase inversion (NIPS) and electrospinning techniques, which are widely used for membrane fabrication, have been proposed for the fabrication of films for food packaging applications from biopolymers and green solvents. Microbial communities perform essential ecosystem functions such as the remineralization of organic carbon that exists as biopolymers. The first step in mineralization is performed by biopolymer degraders, which harbor enzymes that can break down polymers into constituent oligo- or monomeric forms. The released nutrients not only allow degraders to grow, but also promote growth of cells that either consume the degradation products, i.e., exploiters, or consume metabolites released by the degraders or exploiters, i.e., scavengers. It is currently not clear how such remineralizing communities assemble at the microscale--how interactions between the different guilds influence their growth and spatial distribution, and hence the development and dynamics of the community. Here, we address this knowledge gap by studying marine microbial communities that grow on the abundant marine biopolymer alginate. We used batch growth assays and microfluidics coupled to time-lapse microscopy to quantitatively investigate growth and spatial distribution of single cells. We found that the presence of exploiters or scavengers alters the spatial distribution of degrader cells. In general, exploiters and scavengers--which we collectively refer to as cross-feeder cells--slowed down the growth of degrader cells. In addition, coexistence with cross-feeders altered the production of the extracellular enzymes that break down polymers by degrader cells. Our findings reveal that ecological interactions by nondegrading community members have a profound impact on the functions of microbial communities that remineralize carbon biopolymers in nature. The widespread use of synthetic plastics, as well as the waste produced at the end of their life cycle, poses serious environmental issues. In this context, bio-based plastics, i.e., natural polymers produced from renewable resources, represent a promising alternative to petroleum-based materials. One potential source of biopolymers is waste from the food industry, the use of which also provides a sustainable and eco-friendly solution to waste management. Thus, the aim of this work concerns the extraction of polysaccharide fractions from lemon, tomato and fennel waste. Characterizing the chemical–physical and thermodynamic properties of these polysaccharides is an essential step in evaluating their potential applications. Hence, the solubility of the extracted polysaccharides in different solvents, including water and organic solvents, was determined since it is an important parameter that determines their properties and applications. Also, acid-base titration was carried out, along with thermoanalytical tests through differential scanning calorimetry. Finally, the electrospinning of waste polysaccharides was investigated to explore the feasibility of obtaining polysaccharide-based membranes. Indeed, electrospun fibers are a promising structure/system via which it is possible to apply waste polysaccharides in packaging or well-being applications. Thanks to processing feasibility, it is possible to electrospin waste polysaccharides by combining them with different materials to obtain porous 3D membranes made of nanosized fibers. Ulvan is a sulfated polysaccharide extracted from green macroalgae with unique structural and compositional properties. Due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and film-forming properties, as well as high stability, ulvan has shown promising potential as an ingredient of biopolymer films such as sustainable and readily biodegradable biomaterials that could replace petroleum-based plastics in diverse applications such as packaging. This work investigates the potential of Ulva fenestrata as a source of ulvan. Enzyme-assisted extraction with commercial cellulases (Viscozyme L and Cellulysin) and proteases (Neutrase 0.8L and Flavourzyme) was used for cell wall disruption, and the effect of the extraction time (3, 6, 17, and 20 h) on the ulvan yield and its main characteristics (molecular weight, functional groups, purity, and antioxidant capacity) were investigated. Furthermore, a combined process based on enzymatic and ultrasound extraction was performed. Results showed that higher extraction times led to higher ulvan yields, reaching a maximum of 14.1% dw with Cellulysin after 20 h. The combination of enzymatic and ultrasound-assisted extraction resulted in the highest ulvan extraction (17.9% dw). The relatively high protein content in U. fenestrata (19.8% dw) makes the residual biomass, after ulvan extraction, a potential protein source in food and feed applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several solutions have been presented to minimize the environmental impact generated by polymers produced from petroleum resources. This work produced a biopolymer using glycerol, starch (<5) and macaúba epicarp fiber (10–15–20–25–30%) as reinforcement. The interaction of glycerol with starch was favored by the addition of acetic acid (CH3COOH). The pH was adjusted with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at a concentration of 0.1 mol·L−1. The characterization was carried out through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared reflectance—FTIR, water solubility, biodegradability and technological properties. Through the results obtained in this work, it is observed that the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity are influenced by the addition of the fiber concentration; the sample that received a 30% addition presented 19.17 MPa and 348.12 MPa, respectively. All samples showed low solubility in water and low density, in addition to a high rate of degradability in soil with mass loss corresponding to 59% over a period of three months. In recent years, plastics recycling has become one of the leading environmental and waste management issues. Along with the main advantage of plastics, which is undoubtedly their long life, the problem of managing their waste has arisen. Recycling is recognised as the preferred option for waste management, with the aim of reusing them to create new products using 3D printing. Additive manufacturing (AM) is an emerging and evolving rapid tooling technology. With 3D printing, it is possible to achieve lightweight structures with high dimensional accuracy and reduce manufacturing costs for non-standard geometries. Currently, 3D printing research is moving towards the production of materials not only of pure polymers but also their composites. Bioplastics, especially those that are biodegradable and compostable, have emerged as an alternative for human development. This article provides a brief overview of the possibilities of using thermoplastic waste materials through the application of 3D printing, creating innovative materials from recycled and naturally derived materials, i.e., biomass (natural reinforcing fibres) in 3D printing. The materials produced from them are ecological, widely available and cost-effective. Research activities related to the production of bio-based materials have gradually increased over the last two decades, with the aim of reducing environmental problems. The problems arising from the accumulation of plastic have led to comprehensive research for bio-based packaging materials. Proteins are a promising alternative to traditional plastic because of their great barrier properties and multifunctional properties. However, the hydrophilic nature of proteins limits their wide application for the packaging of low and medium-moisture content foods. Distinct functional groups of proteins allow various modifications to obtain hydrophobic films that meet the requirements of suitable packaging. Besides, the valorization of agro-industrial by-products is considered a promising solution for obtaining packaging materials. Herein, protein-rich agro-industrial by-products and various hydrophobisation techniques including blending, emulsification, grafting, nanocomposite, cross-linking, plasticizer alternatives, and physical treatments for the fabrication of protein films are comprehensively investigated. The challenges and prospects are also evaluated. Hydrophobisation is generally based on reducing the hydrophilic groups, compacting the protein network, or incorporating hydrophobic groups. It mostly resulted in a protein matrix with low water sensitivity, high tensile strength, and low elongation. However, lipids incorporation into the protein matrix may overcome the brittleness of hydrophobised protein films. Physical treatments by unfolding protein chains make functional groups accessible for further treatment. Nevertheless, commercialization of protein-based packaging is still in its early stages, although there have been some recent advancements including water-soluble pouches and coating materials. Further research is still needed on optimizing the current techniques or utilizing emerging technologies such as 3D printing, plasma deposition, corona discharge, and pulsed light to accelerate the commercialization of hydrophobic protein films. Background: Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is currently the most common polymer produced by natural bacteria and alternative to conventional petrochemical-based plastics due to its similar material properties and biodegradability. Massilia sp. UMI-21, a newly found bacterium, could produce PHB from starch, maltotriose, or maltose, etc. and could serve as a candidate for seaweed-degrading bioplastic producers. However, the genes involved in PHB metabolism in Massilia sp. UMI-21 are still unclear. Results: In the present study, we assembled and annotated the genome of Massilia sp. UMI-21, identified genes related to the metabolism of PHB, and successfully constructed recombinant Escherichia coli harboring PHB-related genes (phaA2, phaB1 and phaC1) of Massilia sp. UMI-21, which showed up to 139.41% more product. Also, the vgb gene (encoding Vitreoscilla hemoglobin) was introduced into the genetically engineered E. coli and gained up to 117.42% more cell dry weight, 213.30% more PHB-like production and 44.09% more product content. Fermentation products extracted from recombinant E. coli harboring pETDuet1-phaA2phaB1-phaC1 and pETDuet1-phaA2phaB1-phaC1-vgb were identified as PHB by Fourier Transform Infrared and Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis. Furthermore, the decomposition temperature at 10% weight loss of PHB extracted from Massilia sp. UMI-21, recombinant E. coli DH5α-pETDuet1-phaA2phaB1-phaC1 and DH5α-pETDuet1-phaA2phaB1-phaC1-vgb was 276.5, 278.7 and 286.3 °C, respectively, showing good thermal stability. Conclusions: Herein, we presented the whole genome information of PHB-producing Massilia sp. UMI-21 and constructed novel recombinant strains using key genes in PHB synthesis of strain UMI-21 and the vgb gene. Global pollution from fossil plastics is one of the top environmental threats of our time. At their end-of-life phase, fossil plastics, through recycling, incineration, and disposal result in microplastic formation, elevated atmospheric CO2 levels, and the pollution of terrestrial and aquatic environments. Current regional, national, and global regulations are centered around banning plastic production and use and/or increasing recycling while ignoring efforts to rapidly replace fossil plastics through the use of alternatives, including those that occur in nature. In particular, this review demonstrates how microbial polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a class of intrinsically natural polymers, can successfully remedy the fossil and persistent plastic dilemma. PHAs are bio-based, biosynthesized, biocompatible, and biodegradable, and thus, domestically and industrially compostable. Therefore, they are an ideal replacement for the fossil plastics pollution dilemma, providing us with the benefits of fossil plastics and meeting all the requirements of a truly circular economy. PHA biopolyesters are natural and green materials in all stages of their life cycle. This review elaborates how the production, consumption, and end-of-life profile of PHAs are embedded in the current and topical, 12 Principles of Green Chemistry, which constitute the basis for sustainable product manufacturing. The time is right for a paradigm shift in plastic manufacturing, use, and disposal. Wide applications of conventional plastics across the world have made its production inevitable. To avoid the ecocide occurring due to conventional plastics, studies on the production and extraction of renowned biopolymers like polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are explored. PHA is a family of polyesters naturally produced by bacterial fermentation with the potential to replace conventional hydrocarbon-based polymers. The efficient utilization of industrial discard as renewable feedstocks in the production of eco-friendly products such as bioplastics has been studied. This study focuses on the production of PHA using cashew industry wastewater (CIW). Since cashew industry wastewater (CIW) is rich in phenolic compounds and other sources, this study explores the possibility of eliminating the toxic phenol compounds from the waste by the production of PHA using cashew industry wastewater as a secondary source of carbon by paving the way to eco-friendly process. In this context, PHA-producing bacterium was isolated from wastewater samples collected from cashew industries. The morphological, microscopic, and biochemical characterization revealed that the isolated strain CFM1 is Bacillus sp. The strain CFM1 that gave maximum (30%) PHA in control medium was taken up for further studies with wastewater. The concentration of sucrose in the control production media was replaced with cashew industry wastewater. Wastewater was introduced to the medium at different concentrations (10–100%). As CIW concentration was increased, the sucrose concentration was decreased in the medium accordingly. CFM1 isolates produced 34% PHA with 20% wastewater. Isolation and detection of microplastics (MP) in marine samples is extremely cost- and labor-intensive, limiting the speed and amount of data that can be collected. In the current work, we describe rapid measurement of net-collected MPs (net mesh size 300 µm) using a benchtop near-infrared hyperspectral imaging system during a research expedition to the subtropical North Atlantic gyre. Suspected plastic particles were identified microscopically and mounted on a black adhesive background. Particles were imaged with a Specim FX17 near-infrared linescan camera and a motorized stage. A particle mapping procedure was built on existing edge-finding algorithms and a polymer identification method developed using spectra from virgin polymer reference materials. This preliminary work focused on polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene as they are less dense than seawater and therefore likely to be found floating in the open ocean. A total of 27 net tows sampled 2534 suspected MP particles that were imaged and analyzed at sea. Approximately 77.1% of particles were identified as polyethylene, followed by polypropylene (9.2%). A small fraction of polystyrene was detected only at one station. Approximately 13.6% of particles were either other plastic polymers or were natural materials visually misidentified as plastics. Particle size distributions for PE and PP particles with a length greater than 1 mm followed an approximate power law relationship with abundance. This method allowed at-sea, near real-time identification of MP polymer types and particle dimensions, and shows great promise for rapid field measurements of microplastics in net-collected samples. Global pollution by plastics derived from petroleum has fostered the development of carbon–neutral, biodegradable bioplastics synthesized from renewable resources such as modern biomass, yet knowledge on the impact of bioplastics on ecosystems is limited. Here we review the polylactic acid plastic with focus on synthesis, biodegradability tuning, environmental conversion to microplastics, and impact on microbes, algae, phytoplankton, zooplankton, annelids, mollusk and fish. Polylactic acid is a low weight semi-crystalline bioplastic used in agriculture, medicine, packaging and textile. Polylactic acid is one of the most widely used biopolymers, accounting for 33% of all bioplastics produced in 2021. Although biodegradable in vivo, polylactic acid is not completely degradable under natural environmental conditions, notably under aquatic conditions. Many industries are coming under increasing pressure to replace their petrochemical plastics in products and packaging with biopolymers. Retailers have a key role here because they determine the products to be marketed, but there is little research on how change processes differ between sectors. To guide wholesalers with broad product portfolio on how to effectively plan a plastics transition, this study interviewed 48 experts from the food, pharmaceutical, automotive and technics retailing. From the answers, sector-independent context factors were derived and finally their individual transition strategy for bioplastics was compared. Packaging is the main object for transition and the food and automotive sectors prefer the greatest possible standardisation of the plastics change. Largest group differences are in the recovery method of bioplastics products and in the assessment of the innovation potential. Plastics as a packaging material in the food industry is highly preferable, but due to environmental concerns and government legislation, there is a need to develop biobased biodegradable packaging materials. This review includes the sources of biopolymers, methods of productions, future and applications of biobased packaging materials in food packaging. As bioplastic materials have some limitations in terms of mechanical and barrier properties in comparison with synthetic plastics. These limitations can be overcome by using suitable fillers, nanocomposites and certain additives in bioplastics production. The development of bioplastic has a high potential to replace non-biodegradable plastic packaging. Biopolymer with synthetic polymers blends is also an emerging area of research. Bench casting and continuous casting are the popular methods for bioplastic production in the scientific community. According to the global production capacities of the bioplastics report, the present bioplastics production is only 2% of the production volume of the synthetic polymers, it will increase 4% until 2023. However, their non-biodegradability poses a significant threat to the environment. Paper, on the other hand, is considered as a safer alternative due to its natural composition and biodegradability. The porous structure of paper limits its application in packaging, and its poor water resistance further restricts its use in humid environments. Therefore, lamination is a method useful tool to improve the barrier properties of paper. Additionally, the researchers are focusing on developing biodegradable and water-based coatings with anti-fat properties as a green alternative to plastic packaging. The impact of a new grease-resistant coating composed of starch, gelatin and sodium alginate on the mechanical properties of paper was investigated through tensile, tearing, and bursting strength tests. The results showed significant improvements in the mechanical properties of the coated paper sheets. Furthermore, the biodegradability test indicated that the paper samples coated with the new composition showed a 50% weight loss after one week of incubation in the soil, and after three weeks, they exhibited 100% weight loss, demonstrating their outstanding biodegradability. For a sustainable economy, biodegradable biopolymers polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are desirable substitutes to petroleum-based plastics that contaminate our environment. Medium-chain-length (MCL) PHA bioplastics are particularly interesting due to their thermoplastic properties. To hamper the high cost associated to PHA production, the use of bacterial mixed cultures cultivated in open systems and using cheap resources is a promising strategy. Here, we studied the operating conditions favouring direct MCL accumulation by activated sludge, using oleic acid as a model substrate and phosphorus limitation in fed-batch bioreactors. Our results confirm the presence of PHA-accumulating organisms (PHAAO) in activated sludge able to accumulate MCL from oleic acid. A positive correlation between phosphorus (P) limitation and PHA accumulation was demonstrated, allowing up to 26% PHA/total biomass accumulation, and highlighted its negative impact on the MCL/PHA fraction in the polymer. Diversity analysis through 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing revealed a differential selection of PHAAO according to the P-limitation level. A differential behaviour for the orders Pseudomonadales and Burkholderiales at increasing P-limitation levels was revealed, with a higher abundance of the latter at high levels of P-limitation. The PHA accumulation observed in activated sludge open new perspectives for MCL-PHA production system based on P-limitation strategy applied to mixed microbial communities. The current era of industrialization includes a constantly increasing demand for plastic products, but because plastics are rarely recycled and are not biodegradable plastic pollution or "white pollution" has been the result. The consumption of petroleum-based plastics will be 20% of global annual oil by 2050, and thus there is an inevitable need to find an innovative solution to reduce plastic pollution. The biodegradable and environmentally benign bioplastics are suitable alternative to fossil-based plastics in the market due to sustainability, less carbon footprint, lower toxicity and high degradability rate. Microalgal species is an innovative approach to be explored and improved for bioplastic production. Microalgae are generally present in abundant quantity in our ecosystem, and polysaccharide in the algae can be processed and utilized to make biopolymers. Also, these species have a high growth rate and can be easily cultivated in wastewater streams. The review aims to determine the recent status of bioplastic production techniques from microalgal species and also reveal optimization opportunities involved in the process. Several strategies for bioplastic production from algal biomass are being discussed nowadays, and the most prominent are "with blending" (blending of algal biomass with bioplastics and starch) and "without blending" (microalgae as a feedstock for polyhydroxyalkanoates production). The advanced research on modern bioengineering techniques and well-established genetic tools like CRISPR–Cas9 should be encouraged to develop recombinant microalgae strains with elevated levels of PHA/PHB inside the cell. Cellulose is the most abundant plant based biopolymer on earth which provides excellent properties to polymer nanocomposites such as high mechanical properties, high strength, low thermal expansion properties, low density, and biodegradability. The recent demand in materials research is to develop smart materials which comprise excellent features such as enhanced mechanical properties and thermal stability, biodegradability, being eco‐friendly, and low‐cost. Therefore, the objective of this research is to extract cellulose fibers from agricultural waste, i.e., peanut shell as an abundant source of agricultural byproducts and explore the potentiality of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)/cellulose blends as an alternative of conventional plastics. The blend which has higher concentration of cellulose shows the higher acid absorption. FT‐IR of PVA/PVP/cellulose confirms the good interaction between the constituents of the blend. Antimicrobial activities of cellulose and their blend with polymer are evaluated and found maximum against Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) than the Gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis). Degradation behavior of blend is found directly proportional to cellulose content, i.e., highest shown by 20% cellulose film. Hence, PVP/PVA/cellulose blends show desired degradable properties and hence can be an alternative for use of conventional plastics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review reports some strategies mentioned in the literature aimed at production and recovery, paving the way for the bio-based economy. For this, some aspects of PHAs are addressed, such as synthesis, production systems, process control using by-products from industries, and advances and challenges in the downstream. The bioplastics properties made them a prime candidate for food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industrial applications. The development of biodegradable packaging materials has been drawing attention worldwide to minimize the environmental impact of traditional petroleum-based plastics. Nevertheless, it is challenging to obtain bio-based materials with suitable properties for packaging applications. Films produced from a single biopolymer often lack some important properties. An alternative to overcome this limitation is the multilayer assembly. Under this technology, two or more materials with specific and complementary properties are combined into a single-layered structure, thus improving the performance of bio-polymer plastics. This review presents the main aspects of bio-based multilayer film production technologies, discussing their advantages and disadvantages, which have to be considered to produce the most suitable film for each specific application. Most of the studies reported that such films resulted in increased mechanical performance and decreased water, oxygen, and dioxide carbon permeability.
