As an important complement and enhancement technique for cellular communication systems, the device-to-device (D2D) technique has exhibited a number of benefits in terms of, for instance, offering an improved spectral efficiency, enabling a reduced transmit power and providing an enhanced channel capacity, etc. However, a severe interference may be imposed on the conventional cellular users by the activated D2D links, thus, substantially eroding the performance of the former. In this paper, we propose an interference limited area (ILA) based D2D-management scheme along with an appropriately designed power control algorithm for mitigating the above-mentioned interference. We first derive the closed-form expressions of the average coverage probability for both the cellular and D2D links under the proposed ILA scheme, followed by proposing a resource-allocation algorithm subject to a power control mechanism. Numerical results show that the proposed ILA scheme is capable of outperforming the conventional scheme in terms of both the coverage probability (i.e., for both cellular and D2D links) and the sum data rate, particularly in the scenarios with a high D2D density and a high signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. The increasing densification of telecommunications mobile networks raises the compelling problem of exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF). In this paper, we address the particular concept of heterogeneous networks, where small cells (SCs) are deployed to build up a second layer to the existing macrocell network. SC deployment is shown to be particularly effective in reducing EMF exposure, in addition to capacity enhancement. Previous studies on EMF have focused on the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) components separately, although they are strongly correlated. Relying on the definition of the exposure index (EI) from the European FP7 Lexnet project, we evaluate the impact on EMF exposure due to SC deployment. Guidelines for EMF-efficient deployment of SCs are first presented and evaluated. Then, a new enhanced intercell interference coordination (eICIC) algorithm using UL and DL metrics to optimize capacity and exposure to EMF is proposed. Static and self-optimizing dynamic implementations of the solution are considered, using a utility function related to the sojourn time of the users. Time-domain and frequency-domain self-optimized eICIC are compared in terms of EMF exposure reduction and capacity enhancement. The eICIC algorithms are combined with a self-optimized coverage range expansion function leading to further reduction of the EI. The proposed solution for optimizing both capacity and exposure to EMF is compared with a capacity-driven solution based on the DL metrics only. In wireless network resource allocation, the radio power control problems are often solved by fixed point algorithms. Although these algorithms give feasible problem solutions, such solutions often lack notion of problem optimality. This paper reconsiders well-known fixed-point algorithms, such as those with standard and type-II standard interference functions, and investigates the conditions under which they give optimal solutions. The optimality is established by the recently proposed fast-Lipschitz optimization framework. To apply such a framework, the analysis is performed by a logarithmic transformation of variables that gives tractable fast-Lipschitz problems. It is shown how the logarithmic problem constraints are contractive by the standard or type-II standard assumptions on the power control problem, and how sets of cost functions fulfill the fast-Lipschitz qualifying conditions. The analysis on nonmonotonic interference function allows establishing a new qualifying condition for fast-Lipschitz optimization. The results are illustrated by considering power control problems with standard interference function, problems with type-II standard interference functions, and a case of subhomogeneous power control problems. Given the generality of fast-Lipschitz optimization compared to traditional methods for resource allocation, it is concluded that such an optimization may help to determine the optimality of many resource allocation problems in wireless networks. In an interference limited network, joint power and admission control (JPAC) aims at supporting a maximum number of links at their specified signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) targets while using minimum total transmission power. Various convex approximation deflation approaches have been developed for the JPAC problem. In this paper, we propose an effective polynomial time non-convex approximation deflation approach for solving the problem. The approach is based on the non-convex \ell q~(0< q< 1) approximation of an equivalent sparse \ell 0 reformulation of the JPAC problem. We show that, for any instance of the JPAC problem, there exists a \bar q\in (0,1) such that it can be exactly solved by solving its \ell q approximation problem with any q\in (0, \bar q]. We also show that finding the global solution of the \ell q approximation problem is NP-hard. Then, we propose a potential reduction interior-point algorithm, which can return an \epsilon -KKT solution of the NP-hard \ell q approximation problem in polynomial time. The returned solution can be used to check the simultaneous supportability of all links in the network and to guide an iterative link removal procedure, resulting in the polynomial time non-convex approximation deflation approach for the JPAC problem. Numerical simulations show that the proposed approach outperforms the existing convex approximation approaches in terms of the number of supported links and the total transmission power, particularly exhibiting a quite good performance in selecting which subset of links to support. In this paper, we consider the problem of power control for sum-rate maximization on multiple interfering links [transmitter–receiver pairs (Tx–RX)] under a sum power constraint. We consider a single-frequency network, where all pairs are operating in the same frequency band, thereby creating interference with each other. We study the power-allocation problem for sum-rate maximization with and without quality-of-service (QoS) requirements on individual links. When the objective is only sum-rate maximization without QoS guarantees, we develop an analytic solution to decide optimal power allocation for a two-TX–RX-pair problem. We also develop a low-complexity iterative algorithm for a three-TX–RX-pair problem. For a generic N>\3 TX–RX pair problem, we develop two low-complexity suboptimal power-allocation algorithms. The first algorithm is based on the idea of making clusters of two or three TX–RX pairs and then leveraging the power-allocation results obtained for the two- and three-TX–RX-pair problems. The second algorithm is developed by using a high signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) approximation, and this algorithm can be also implemented in a distributed manner by individual TXs. We then consider the same problem but with additional QoS guarantees for individual links. Cognitive radio has received great attention recently for its ability to improve spectrum efficiency by letting secondary users to access spectrum resource that is unoccupied by primary users. However, cognitive radio also brings new challenges in the design of future wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate the problem of resource allocation in cognitive radio networks. Specifically, we consider the problem of proportional fair scheduling in cognitive radio relay networks. Our problem formulation takes into account the fluctuations of usable spectrum resource, channel quality variations caused by frequency selectivity, and interference caused by different transmit power levels. We prove that the problem is NP-hard and is computationally infeasible to be solved in a timely manner by using brute force algorithms. An easy-to-compute upper bound for the formulated problem is also derived. We then propose two heuristic algorithms that are easy-to-implement, yet achieve performance close to the upper bound. The proposed algorithms can be executed and finished within 1 millisecond. Thus, they can meet the requirement of real-time scheduling. Distributed power control over interference limited network has received an increasing intensity of interest over the past few years. Distributed solutions (like the iterative water-filling, gradient projection, etc.) have been intensively investigated under quasi-static channels. However, as such distributed solutions involve iterative updating and explicit message passing, it is unrealistic to assume that the wireless channel remains unchanged during the iterations. Unfortunately, the behavior of those distributed solutions under time-varying channels is in general unknown. In this paper, we shall investigate the distributed scaled gradient projection algorithm (DSGPA) in a K pairs multicarrier interference network under a finite-state Markov channel (FSMC) model. We shall analyze the convergence property as well as tracking performance of the proposed DSGPA. Our analysis shows that the proposed DSGPA converges to a limit region rather than a single point under the FSMC model. We also show that the order of growth of the tracking errors is given by \cal O(1 / \barN), where \barN is the average sojourn time of the FSMC. Based on the analysis, we shall derive the tracking error optimal scaling matrices via Markov decision process modeling. We shall show that the tracking error optimal scaling matrices can be implemented distributively at each transmitter. We propose a marginal-power-efficiency-based adaptation (MPEA) scheme for distributed power control in wireless communication systems. Nodes autonomously adapt their transmit power by keeping a differential measure of power efficiency, which is defined as the additional capacity obtained per unit of transmit power, at a desirable threshold. We combine the MPEA with the Foschini–Miljanic (FM) algorithm into a power control algorithm for a multihop cellular network where nodes can dynamically adapt to both local and global conditions. Dynamic variations in channel behavior is considered in transmission power control design for cellular radio systems. It is well known that power control increases system capacity, improves Quality of Service (QoS), and reduces multiuser interference. In this paper, an adaptive power control design based on the identification of the underlying pathloss dynamics of the fading channel is presented. Formulating power control decisions based on the measured received power levels allows modeling the fading channel pathloss dynamics in terms of a Hidden Markov Model (HMM). This paper proposes an automatic control framework to address the problem of distributed and opportunistic transmission power control in wireless communication networks. The proposed framework allows high flexibility on the quality of service (QoS) provision by exploiting the link quality variation. It associates a standard target tracking algorithm with a dynamic target QoS determined by a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller that induces an opportunistic behavior. Strict QoS requirements can also be fulfilled by choosing appropriately the weighting parameters of the LQR synthesis. To prevent performance degradation due to measurement uncertainties, robust solutions are developed. The proposed mixed \cal H2/\cal H\infty distributed power control combines the optimal \cal H2 control and the robust \cal H\infty control to obtain trade-off solutions. All developed algorithms present low computational complexity, and the mixed \cal H2/\cal H\infty distributed power control can operate as the pure \cal H2 control if the robust constraint is relaxed according to the choice of a single parameter. In wireless communication systems with multiple users, the near–far effect and the cochannel interferences decrease the spectral efficiency and system performance. An efficient known method to combat these destructive effects is to properly adjust the transmit powers. A practical and efficient way for power control (PC) in cellular communication systems is the autonomous distributed PC (DPC). In this method, the transmit power of each link is independently modified based on the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) reported from the other side of that link. It is known that in a perfect scenario where the reported SINRs are exact, this algorithm converges to the optimum transmit powers. However, in the case of erroneous SINR reports, the transmit powers deviate from their optimum values. This paper addresses the destructive effect of inaccurate SINR reports on the performance of a DPC algorithm. Then, independent variable step-sizes that update the transmit powers are proposed, and convergence of the proposed DPC algorithm to the optimum solution of the original problem is analytically shown. Additionally, a protocol to adaptively tune the step-sizes in our algorithm, which improves the performance of PC in the presence of inaccurate SINR reports, is proposed. Dense, unmanaged IEEE 802.11 deployments tempt saboteurs into launching jamming attacks by injecting malicious interference. Nowadays, jammers can be portable devices that transmit intermittently at low power in order to conserve energy. In this paper, we first conduct extensive experiments on an indoor 802.11 network to assess the ability of two physical-layer functions, rate adaptation and power control, in mitigating jamming. In the presence of a jammer, we find that: 1) the use of popular rate adaptation algorithms can significantly degrade network performance; and 2) appropriate tuning of the carrier sensing threshold allows a transmitter to send packets even when being jammed and enables a receiver to capture the desired signal. Based on our findings, we build ARES, an Anti-jamming REinforcement System, which tunes the parameters of rate adaptation and power control to improve the performance in the presence of jammers. ARES ensures that operations under benign conditions are unaffected. To demonstrate the effectiveness and generality of ARES, we evaluate it in three wireless test-beds: 1) an 802.11n WLAN with MIMO nodes; 2) an 802.11a/g mesh network with mobile jammers; and 3) an 802.11a WLAN with TCP traffic. We address the problem of distributed power control in a two-tier cellular network, where full-duplex small cells underlay a macro cell in a co-channel deployment scenario. We first formulate the distributed power control problem as a non-cooperative game and then extend it to a repeated game with imperfect public monitoring. The repeated game formulation prevents deceitful small cells from deviating from the social optimal solution for their own benefit. We establish the existence and uniqueness of the Nash equilibrium in the formulated non-cooperative game. We also characterize the set of public perfect equilibrium for the repeated game. A two-phase distributed algorithm is proposed to achieve and enforce a Pareto optimal transmit power profile. The solution obtained by this algorithm is also social optimal. Phase 1 of the algorithm is a fully distributed learning phase based on perturbed Markov chains, where each base station individually learns a Pareto optimal operating point. Phase 2 is composed of two rules: 1) a detection rule based on Page-Hinckley test to detect cheating and 2) a punishment rule to motivate cheating base stations to cooperate. Through theoretical analysis, we prove that the proposed distributed power control mechanism achieves a public perfect equilibrium point of the formulated repeated game. The power control algorithm is also cheat-proof and needs only a small amount of information exchange among network nodes. The effectiveness of the algorithm is shown through numerical analysis. Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) have the potential to utilize spectrum efficiently and are positioned to be the core technology for the next-generation multihop wireless networks. An important problem for such networks is its capacity. We study this problem for CRNs in the SINR (signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio) model, which is considered to be a better characterization of interference (but also more difficult to analyze) than disk graph model. The main difficulties of this problem are two-fold. First, SINR is a nonconvex function of transmission powers; an optimization problem in the SINR model is usually a nonconvex program and NP-hard in general. Second, in the SINR model, scheduling feasibility and the maximum allowed flow rate on each link are determined by SINR at the physical layer. To maximize capacity, it is essential to follow a cross-layer approach, but joint optimization at physical (power control), link (scheduling), and network (flow routing) layers with the SINR function is inherently difficult. In this paper, we give a mathematical characterization of the joint relationship among these layers. We devise a solution procedure that provides a (1- \varepsilon ) optimal solution to this complex problem, where \varepsilon is the required accuracy. Our theoretical result offers a performance benchmark for any other algorithms developed for practical implementation. Using numerical results, we demonstrate the efficacy of the solution procedure and offer quantitative understanding on the interaction of power control, scheduling, and flow routing in a CRN. Efficient optimization techniques are important to manage interference in emerging dense wireless networks. Here, we address interference management through power control as a general utility maximization problem. For the class of utility functions that are concave in the logarithm of the optimization variables, we propose a power control algorithm based on fixed-point iterations. The iterations converge to the globally optimal power vector. One key benefit is that, for a network with N transmitters and a centralized implementation of the power control algorithm, the computational complexity per iteration of the algorithm is \cal O(N^2). When implemented in a distributed fashion and allowing for a signaling complexity of N messages per iteration, the computation complexity is reduced to \cal O(N). We show that the proposed centralized and distributed versions of the algorithm converge to the optimal power vector at a linear rate. Our numerical results suggest that in most instances, the algorithm takes fewer than ten iterations to converge, even fewer if the initialization is close to the optimal power vector. The proposed algorithm is, therefore, very efficient for power control in slowly fading channels. Furthermore, unlike previous works in the literature, the proposed algorithm does not require the objective function to be separable into a sum of individual utilities. We formally define the gradual removal problem in wireless networks, where the smallest number of users should be removed due to infeasibility of the target-SIR requirements for all users, and present a distributed power-control algorithm with temporary removal and feasibility check (DFC) to address it. The basic idea is that any transmitting user whose required transmit power for reaching its target-SIR exceeds its maximum power is temporarily removed, but resumes its transmission if its required transmit power goes below a given threshold obtained in a distributed manner. This enables users to check the feasibility of system in a distributed manner. The existence of at least one fixed-point in DFC is guaranteed, and at each equilibrium, all transmitting users reach their target-SIRs consuming the minimum aggregate transmit power. Furthermore, in contrast to the existing algorithms, no user is unnecessarily removed by DFC, i.e., DFC is Pareto and energy-efficient. We also show that when target-SIRs are the same for all users, DFC minimizes the outage probability. Simulation results confirm our analytical developments and show that DFC significantly outperforms the existing schemes in addressing the gradual removal problem in terms of convergence, outage probability, and power consumption. The maximum differential backlog (MDB), or “backpressure” control policy of Tassiulas and Ephremides has been shown to adaptively maximize the stable throughput of multihop wireless networks with random traffic arrivals and queueing. The practical implementation of the MDB policy in wireless networks with mutually interfering links, however, requires the development of distributed optimization algorithms. Within the context of code-division multiple-access (CDMA)-based multihop wireless networks, we develop a set of node-based scaled gradient projection power control algorithms which solves the MDB optimization problem based on the high-signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) approximation of link capacities using low communication overhead. We investigate the impact of the high-SINR approximation and the nonnegligible convergence time required by the power control algorithms on the throughput region achievable by the iterative MDB policy. We develop a distributed throughput-optimal power allocation algorithm in wireless networks. The study of this problem has been limited due to the nonconvexity of the underlying optimization problems that prohibits an efficient solution even in a centralized setting. By generalizing the randomization framework originally proposed for input queued switches to SINR rate-based interference model, we characterize the throughput-optimality conditions that enable efficient and distributed implementation. Using gossiping algorithm, we develop a distributed power allocation algorithm that satisfies the optimality conditions, thereby achieving (nearly) 100 percent throughput. In the well-known distributed target-SIR-tracking power control algorithm (TPC), when the system is infeasible (a constrained power vector does not exist to attain target-SIRs), all non-supported users (those who cannot obtain their target-SIRs) transmit at their maximum power. Such users inefficiently consume their energy, and cause interference to others, which increases the number of non-supported users. To deal with this, some non-supported users should decrease their transmit power (the gradual removal problem). We present a distributed power control scheme with gradual soft removal, by which either TPC or OPC (opportunistic power control) is used, depending on whether the ratio of interference-to-path-gain is below or above a threshold that is chosen by each user in a distributed manner. We show that our algorithm converges to a unique fixed-point in both feasible and infeasible systems, and that when the system is infeasible, it results in less outage with significantly less consumed power, as compared to TPC. We also provide a game theoretic analysis of our algorithm by introducing a new pricing when users are selfish.
