The French Defence Radiation Protection Service (SPRA) conducted a study to assess the radiation exposure of personnel assigned to the maintenance of the Palmier radar in an Air Force Base. The aim of the study was the assessment of the annual effective doses received by personnel assigned to these maintenance operations, and the measurement of equivalent dose rates in the area in order to realise radiological zoning. In two measurement campaigns, the annual individual effective doses, measured by passive whole-body OSL Inlight® dosimeters, consolidated the results obtained by radiometric measurements. Moreover, the equivalent dose rate shows wide variations in relation to the position of the operator in the emitter's area. From these results, the authors propose recommendations for categorisation of workers, radiological zoning and dose monitoring procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Royal Air Force was successful in the Battle of Britain because of the elaborate and sophisticated air defence system of Fighter Command. This system had its foundations in the early warnings which radar provided. The process of collecting a huge amount of often inaccurate and contradictory data from radar stations, and then turning it into useful information which could direct fighters to their targets was a remarkable accomplishment. Information was the key to this revolution in military organisation, command and control procedures, and tactics. The article reports on the observations related to the evolution of pulsars. After its discovery, the astronomical figure received enough attention especially when there was only a single appreciation from the Nobel prize body. Incidentally at an Alaskan outpost, U.S. Air Force staff sergeant Charles Schisler utilized a military radar to determine radio sources which some were pulsars. Apparently, the pulsars appeared numerous times and was recorded by Schisler. According to astronomer Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Schisler's findings indicated an early account of pulsar spotting.
