The paper presents geochemical and geochronological data on gneisses and granitoids from three deep boreholes (Yalykskaya-4, Danilovskaya-532, Srednenepskaya-1) in the basement of the southwestern part of the Nepa-Botuoba anteclise. Based on U-Pb zircon dating, three stages of granitoid magmatism were identified: ∼2.8, 2.0 and 1.87 Ga. At ca. 2.8 Ga magmatic TTG protoliths of biotite–amphibole gneisses (Yalykskaya-4 borehole) were formed, these rocks represent the Mesoarchean crust and experienced thermal effects typical of the Tungus superterrane of the Siberian craton at the terminal Neoarchean (∼2.53 Ga). Biotite gneissic granites (∼2.0 Ga) (Danilovskaya-532 borehole), which correlate in age with the granitoids of the basement of the Magan terrane and the Akitkan orogenic belt, were derived from a metasedimentary source formed by the erosion of predominantly Paleoproterozoic juvenile crust rocks. The 1.88 Ga A-type granite (Srednenepskaya-1 borehole) corresponds to the main stage of post-collision granite magmatism within the South Siberian magmatic belt. The ca. 2.8 Ga biotite–amphibole gneisses mark the eastern boundary of the Archean crust with Paleoproterozoic juvenile crust in the south of the Tungus superterrane, which are separated by a transitional zone intruded by granites having intermediate isotopic characteristics. The isotopic composition of Paleoproterozoic gneisses and granitoids indicates that marginal southern Magan terrane in contact with the Tungus superterrane includes blocks of both Archean and Paleoproterozoic crust, thus showing similarity with the Akitkan orogenic belt and accretionary orogens. The final amalgamation of the Tungus superterrane with blocks of the eastern part of the Siberian platform basement corresponds to a milestone of 1.88 Ga. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The closure of Tethys Ocean has led to shaping the Central Pontides together with different types of rocks. In the east of Kargı (Gökçedoğan), which is located in the Central Pontides, allochthonous rocks of Late Palaeozoic- Early Cenozoic age and autochthonous units exist together, and allochthonous rocks present various tectono-stratigraphical sequences. Distinctive tectonic slices developed in the area as a consequence of the thrusting of the Permian carbonates from the north towards the south over the Middle Jurassic accretionary Complex (Kunduz Metamorphites) that form the basement of the area, and also because of the thrusting of the units of the Kirazbaşı Complex (ophiolitic melange) and Mesozoic carbonate rocks over this basement from the south towards the north because of the closure of Tethys Ocean. This paper presents whole-rock geochemical data, which suggest that the metabasites and the ophiolitic basalts are tholeiitic. The Jurassic metabasites from the Kunduz Unit and basalts from ophiolitic melange are characterized by the mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) and within plate tholeiites. This paper reports two types of basalt that have different ages (Carboniferous and Permian) but occur next to each other in the northern part of the Changning–Menglian accretionary wedge, southwestern China. We use the geochronology and geochemical data to evaluate the tectonic evolution of the Palaeo‐Tethys during this period. Zircon grains from the mafic‐ultramafic rocks associated with the Permian basalts in the Xiaomengtai area yield a U–Pb age of 281 Ma and εHf(t) values from +9.2 to +12.8. The Permian mafic‐ultramafic rocks and the associated basalts are all characterized by normal mid‐ocean ridge basalt (N‐MORB)‐like chondrite‐normalized rare earth elements patterns, moderately negative Nb‐Ta anomalies in the mantle‐normalized immobile incompatible trace element patterns, and positive εNd(t) values from +4.2 to +6.5, which are consistent with the geochemical characteristics of mafic‐ultramafic rocks in supra‐subduction zone (SSZ)‐type ophiolite. On the contrary, the Carboniferous basalts, which are associated with marine carbonates, are characterized by light REE enrichments, slightly positive Nb‐Ta anomalies, and εNd(t) values from +2.8 to +4.0. These features are similar to those of typical oceanic island basalts (OIBs) worldwide. Modelling results using REEs show that the parental magmas for the Carboniferous OIBs and the Permian basalts were likely derived from mantle peridotites at the depths of garnet and spinel stability, respectively, consistent with the formation depth of these two different types of basalt globally. The occurrence of these two different types of mafic‐ultramafic rocks with significantly different ages in the same area supports the view that they are the remnants of the accreted Palaeo‐Tethys oceanic crust. The Carboniferous OIBs are considered to be parts of an OIB‐carbonate seamount chain that originally formed in the southern part of the Palaeo‐Tethys. The Permian mafic‐ultramafic rocks are regarded as fragments of SSZ‐type ophiolites that were present in the northern part of the Palaeo‐Tethys. GNSS measurement-based geodetic studies have led to researchers explaining the regional deformation in the Himalaya in terms of arc-parallel shearing and arc-normal compression. Arc-parallel extension is caused by an increase in the shearing rate, which is reflected in the increasing arc-parallel velocities as one moves along-arc away from the arc-center. This has prompted many to recognize the significance of arc-parallel shearing and extension in the Himalayan orogeny. Several researchers have proposed that the arc-parallel deformation is taken up almost entirely by the Karakoram fault system through slip transfer from the Himalayan foothills, though recent studies have provided some evidence of dextral faulting within the Northwest (NW) Himalayan accretionary wedge. In this paper we address this issue by providing topography-derived evidence such as the deviation of the maximum gradient azimuth from the arc-normal along the Himalayan arc to show that obliquity in convergence is a significant controlling factor in shaping the morphology of the Himalayan slopes. Approximately 4 ± 3 mm/year of arc-parallel dextral shear is being accommodated within the accretionary wedge spanning the NW Himalaya (particularly the part in Himachal and Garhwal), which is approximately 55% of the total arc-parallel dextral shear resulting from the ongoing convergence between southern Tibet and the Indian Plate in this portion of the Himalaya. The study further suggests consistency of the observed Himalayan deformation with the oblique convergence model and the significant role that the underthrusting ridges inherited from the Indian Plate are playing in the strain accommodation pattern in the overlying Himalaya. Accreted basaltic rocks are expected to provide information on intraplate volcanism in the oceans. Basaltic rocks, originating from mid‐ocean ridges, plateaus, and seamounts, have been reported from exhumed accretionary complexes. However, basaltic rocks related to petit‐spot volcanism remain poorly documented. We examined basaltic intrusive rocks in an exhumed accretionary complex on Amami‐Oshima Island, Ryukyu Arc. Basaltic sills intruded mélange composed of seamount‐derived micritic limestone and basaltic rocks, which deformed together with the mudstone‐dominated mélange in the subduction zone. A separate basaltic sill intruded pelagic chert before being incorporated as a mélange block in the mudstone matrix during deformation in the subduction zone. Geochemical discrimination diagrams and trace element patterns indicate that the accreted dolerites and nonintrusive basalts likely originate from mid‐ocean ridges and hotspots, respectively. On the other hand, the geochemical characteristics of basaltic sills are compatible with alkaline basalt with enriched in incompatible trace elements relative to other basaltic rocks of hotspot origin and may represent a low degree of partial melting from a deeper mantle source (>90 km). A higher ratio of gadolinium to ytterbium in the basaltic sills relative to hotspot or mid‐ocean ridge‐related basalt indicates both a deeper melting depth, and a magma source which upwelled through thick oceanic lithosphere far from the mid‐ocean ridge. Based on the timing of basaltic intrusion and geochemical features, we suggest that the basaltic intrusive rocks could record past petit‐spot volcanism in the oceanic plate. Plain Language Summary: Basaltic rocks in exhumed accretionary complexes are crucial for understanding volcanism in oceanic plates. Petit‐spot volcanoes on modern seafloor have been found in the region seaward of the trench, derived from rising basaltic magma from the deep mantle along fractures from the bending of oceanic plates. However, past petit‐spot volcanism on already subducted oceanic plates remains poorly understood. This paper reports on the geological features and geochemical element analyses used to determine that basaltic rocks found in the Chichibu accretionary complex on Amami‐Oshima Island, Ryukyu Arc, originated from the deep mantle and intruded oceanic sedimentary rocks and seamount‐related rocks. We suggest that the basaltic intrusion resulted from petit‐spot volcanism. Our results highlight that basaltic rocks found in outcrops exhumed from subduction zones could contribute to understanding past petit‐spot volcanism in the oceanic plate that has completely subducted to the mantle. The Paleoproterozoic Belcher Group (ca. 2.0 to 1.83 Ga) occurs on the remote Belcher Islands of Hudson Bay in Nunavut, Canada. It includes nearly nine kilometres of wellpreserved siliciclastic and carbonate sedimentary rocks, deposited initially in a marginal to shallow marine setting representing one of the first true continental shelf environments on the proto-Canadian Shield. A wide variety of depositional facies exists within the Belcher Group, and it is particularly well known for its spectacular stromatolites in dolostone. In addition to these macroscopic features, two of its formations (Kasegalik and McLeary) contain intact microfossils of Eoentophysalis belcherensis, the oldest known occurrence of cyanobacteria in the geological record. The uppermost part of the Belcher Group contains sedimentary rocks of very different character that represent a younger foreland basin that developed in response to accretionary and collisional processes of the Trans-Hudson orogen. These younger formations (Omarolluk and Loaf) consist of a thick sequence of turbidites, overlain by arkose and other immature clastic sedimentary rocks. A defining characteristic of the Omarolluk Formation is the presence of calcareous concretions. The Omarolluk Formation shares attributes with "omars", which are glacially transported clasts that occur both locally and further afield throughout parts of Canada and the northern United States and have helped characterize Pleistocene ice-flow trends across the continent. The Belcher Group also includes two formations dominated by spectacular mafic volcanic rocks. The earlier episode, represented by the Eskimo Formation, reflects eruption of largely subaerial volcanic flows interpreted to represent flood basalt associated with the rifting of Archean basement during the establishment of the continental shelf. A later volcanic episode (the Flaherty Formation) is dominated by submarine pillowed basalt flows and has been assigned to varied tectonic settings, including volcanic arcs related to subduction and oceanic plateaus related to mantle plume activity and renewed rifting along the continental margin. This later volcanism marks the transition from shelf to foreland basin. Mafic sills and related intrusions (Haig intrusions) occur in the middle and lower part of the Belcher Group. Thermal and chemical interactions between mafic magma and calcareous shale generated unusual rocks that are well known in Nunavut as highquality artisanal carving stone. The Belcher Group also contains Superior-type iron formations that have attracted past exploration interest. The Belcher Group is a unique geological entity defined by its wide variety of rock types, its superb exposures, and its potential to illustrate many important geological processes in a formative time in Earth's history. It is also a unique microfossil paleontological resource, and its deposition brackets a crucial and much-debated interval of Precambrian atmospheric and oceanic evolution. It represents an important scientific resource in the context of understanding such changes. This general review paper highlights its most important features, discusses its potential for future research and contributes to wider discussions about its possible future role as a protected area within Nunavut. This paper reports new geochronological data on metagranitoids (U–Pb SIMS) and ophiolites (Sm–Nd) from the Khanka massif. New and published data define the Early Neoproterozoic Matveevka–Nakhimovka terrane with 935- and 915-Ma early suprasubduction magmatism, 850–880-Ma and 757-Ma withinplate and Pacific-type transform margin magmatism, as well as the Late Neoproterozoic–Early Cambrian Dvoryan and Tafuin terranes with 543, 520, 517, and 513-Ma suprasubduction magmatism. These two terranes are separated by a suture (Voznesenka and Spassk terranes) formed by Ediacaran–Cambrian shelf deposits and a Cambrian accretionary wedge with ophiolites older than 514 Ma. The greater part of the Khanka massif formed in the late Cambrian, with the Kordonka island-arc terrane accreted at the end of the Silurian. The Sergeevka terrane of the Ordovician island arc joined it through the Early Cretaceous strike-slip movements. Heterogeneous structures of the main part of the Khanka massif can be traced to the north based on the analogous stages of magmatism and metamorphism, where the Jiamusi massif (including the East Bureya terrane) is an Early Neoproterozoic block and the eastern Songnen massif (including the West Bureya terrane) is a Late Neoproterozoic–Cambrian block. These blocks are separated by the Spassk–Wuxingzhen–Melgin suture formed by their collision in the Late Cambrian. The Bureya–Songnen–Jiamusi–Khanka superterrane formed as a part of the Gondwana supercontinent approximately 500 Ma ago through orogeny and accretion of the Rodinia supercontinent fragments. The Late Albian–Campanian Okhotsk–Chukotka Volcanic Belt (OCVB) extends along the northeastern Asian margin for more than 3000 km. Toward the Pacific, this belt adjoins the microcontinent of the Sea of Okhotsk in the west and the Jurassic–Early Cretaceous terranes of the Northern Koryak region in the east. Various rock assemblages of these terranes are overlain by shallow-water and continental sediments coeval with the OCVB volcanic rocks. These sediments significantly differ from deposits of deep-water trenches and accretionary wedges suggesting location of the Late Cretaceous OCVP subduction zone southeast of the Koryak terranes. The Jurassic–Early Cretaceous Uda‒Murgal island arc (which was accreted in the Barremian) and the Late Albian–Campanian Okhotsk–Chukotka Volcanic Belt, which are two major subduction-related structures of the northeastern active margin of Asia, were originated with the interval of 20 Ma (Late Barremian–Aptian–Early Albian). During this time interval the Jurassic–Late Cretaceous North Koryak complexes of various geodynamic affinities were juxtaposed, transported and accreted to the Asian continent in a local area restricted by the Siberian continent and the Chukotka continental block (Hauterivian–Early Barremian). The data presented in this paper contradict the hypothesis of the North Koryak terranes having been formed within the Pacific oceanic plates. It is proposed that these terranes composed of rock complexes of various geodynamic settings were originated in the Late Mesozoic eastern part of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean. The chaotic transformation and movement of the Northern Koryak terranes were probably related to escape tectonics during the closure of the Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean, which resulted from collision of the Amur block of the Sino-Korean craton with the Siberian continent. This paper presents a reappraisal of datasets from Titihaoa-1, an offshore petroleum exploration drillhole that intersects a ∼2740 m-thick Holocene to early-middle Miocene sedimentary succession in the Titihaoa Sub-basin, part of the Hikurangi accretionary wedge. The well provides an important datapoint in the offshore southern Hikurangi subduction margin. We present new and revised foraminiferal biostratigraphic and paleoenvironmental interpretations that help to constrain age, depositional paleo-water depths, sedimentation rates, and oceanicity. Analysis of open-hole wireline and image-log datasets, combined with analogues from nearby outcrops, provide an improved understanding of the sedimentary architecture, depositional systems, and present-day in-situ stress at the drillhole site. The succession within Titihaoa-1 comprises a shallowing-upward succession of thin-bedded lower- to middle-bathyal turbidites, overlain by mudstone-dominated lithofacies deposited in the middle- to upper-bathyal and mid-shelf environments. The geological history and stratigraphic trends within the Titihaoa Sub-basin are analogous to other Neogene accretionary wedge basins within the Hikurangi Margin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is the largest accretionary orogenic belt in the world and its formation involved a complicated process of arc–continent collision. Large‐scale Mesozoic volcanic activity in the Great Xing'an Range (GXAR) in northeastern China, which constitutes part of the eastern CAOB, has received much recent research attention. However, the petrogenesis and formation mechanism of the late Mesozoic igneous rocks remain enigmatic. This paper investigates the geochronology, petrogenesis, and formation mechanism of late Mesozoic magmatic rocks in the Kelihe area of the GXAR based on zircon U–Pb dating, petrology, and geochemistry. Late Mesozoic magmatism in the Kelihe area occurred during the Late Jurassic (165–155 Ma) and Early Cretaceous (130–120 Ma). These igneous rocks generated by this magmatism are characterized by high SiO2 (69.97–75.49 wt%) and low MgO (0.11–0.68 wt%), Cr (10–30 ppm), Co (0.2–2.6 ppm), and Ni (0.5–1.6 ppm) contents. Trace elements show enrichment in Rb, Th, U, Zr, and K, and depletion in Ba, P, Nb, and Ti. These features indicate that the rocks were derived from partial melting of the crust. Furthermore, the rhyolites have high Na2O (5.02–5.44 wt%) and K2O (3.94–4.88 wt%) contents, similar to those of melts formed by the partial melting of basaltic crust. Combining the present results with the findings of previous studies, it is inferred that the Mesozoic igneous rocks formed in a post‐collisional extensional setting related to lithospheric thinning and asthenospheric upwelling after the closure of the Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean. The Kelameili Ocean was one branch of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean, the initiation and closure history of which remains elusive. Consequently, they hamper our understanding of the accretionary evolution of the southern Altaids. In this paper, we carried out field mapping and also geochronological and geochemical analyses on the Huangcaopo Group in the northern Harlik Mountains, NW China. Field investigation revealed that "block‐in‐matrix" structure develops with blocks of andesite, limestone, sandstone, and gabbro in matrices of turbidites. Combined with our recent work, our field investigation indicates that the Huangcaopo Group is the southern extension of the Kelameili accretionary complex. A gabbro block (19HAM057) was dated at 500 ± 4 Ma, its geochemical affinity was defined to be similar to arc magmatic rocks. Magmatisms represented by two gabbroic intrusions (19HAM057‐2 and 19HAM048) were dated at the latest Devonian (360 ± 5 Ma) and the latest Carboniferous (299 ± 4 Ma), respectively. Their geochemistry displays enrichments in light rare earth elements (LREE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILE), but depletions in high field strength elements (HFSE, especially Nb and Ta). And a younger gabbroic intrusion (19HAM052) yielded crystallization age of the latest Permian (254 ± 3 Ma), and its geochemistry also shows affinity to arc magmatism. The magmatism represented by the gabbro block (19HAM057) was coeval with the Zhaheba‐Aermantai ophiolite, indicating that it was the product of incipient arc magmatism following subduction initiation in the Kelameili branch of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean. However, two episodes of gabbroic magmas (19HAM057‐2 and 19HAM048) that intruded the Kelameili accretionary complex from the latest Devonian to latest Carboniferous indicate southward rollback of the subducting Kelameili oceanic lithosphere and resulted in the development of a growing arc. Meanwhile, the youngest gabbroic intrusion (19HAM052) suggests that northward subduction of the Kelameili oceanic lithosphere may have at least lasted to the latest Permian, indicating that the closure of the Kelameili Ocean might have been later than the latest Permian, most likely in the early Triassic. Our new data provide further constraints on the initiation and closure history of the Kelameili Ocean, which shed light on the accretionary evolution of the Altaids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents a review of processes of subduction or tectonic erosion at Pacific-type convergent margins (PTCM) including definition of "tectonic erosion", its triggers, driving forces and consequences. We review examples of tectonic erosion at the Circum-Pacific PTCMs and at the fossil PTCMs of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO) currently hosted by the Central-Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Recent geological and stratigraphic studies have shown two types of PTCMs: accreting and eroding. Accreting PTCMs consist of older deposits of accretionary and frontal prisms and grow oceanward, i.e. the trench retreats. Eroding PTCMs are characterized by the destruction of the prism, approaching arc and trench and typically form during shallow-angle and fast subduction of an oceanic slab with oceanic floor relief highs. The mechanism of tectonic erosion includes destruction of oceanic slab, island arcs, accretionary prism, fore-arc and related prism. Tectonic erosion is a common phenomenon at many Circum-Pacific PTCMs, e.g., in South America, Tonga and Nankai troughs, Alaska. Accretion and subduction of oceanic rises contributes greatly to the processes of formation, transformation and destruction of continental crust at PTCM. The episodes of tectonic erosion can be also reconstructed for an ancient ocean, for example, for the PAO, which evolution and suturing formed the CAOB. Many CAOB foldbelts (Altai, Tienshan, eastern Kazakhstan, Transbaikalia, Mongolia) carry signs of disappearance of big volumes of continental crust (arcs). Studying processes responsible not only for the formation of continental crust, but also for the disappearance of big volumes of crustal material is important for correct evaluation of the nature of intra-continental orogenic belts, e.g., CAOB, and development of reliable tectonic models. Through an integrated approach, this paper investigates the role of coupled surf-swash dynamics on outgoing waves using data collected at a low-tide terraced beach, Grand Popo, Benin (Gulf of Guinea, West Africa). Observed reflection is 8 %. Analyses are conducted from deep water directional wave spectra measurements, daily beach surveys and remote video measurements. Our results show that the swash can be a non-negligible component of the nearshore energy balance (14% of total dissipation) and is closely tied to reflection. Reflection thus depends on waves at swash inception (offshore waves and surf zone saturation), and shoreface slope varying with tide and morphological evolution. An outgoing cut-off frequency (shortest reflected waves) can be linked to swash saturation with a strong dependence on shoreface slope. A phase-resolving Boussinesq model was validated and used to investigate the influence of terrace width, upper shoreface slope and tidal elevation over the terrace. This papers puts forward the role of the coupled system surf-swash and underlines potential key interactions between a rapid shoreface evolution and surf zone hydro-morphodynamics. The Circum-Pacific Late Albian–Cenomanian orogenic belts (including the Sikhote-Alin–Western Sakhalin belt) were formed as a result of the deformation of mainly epioceanic terranes as fragments of Jurassic–Early Cretaceous accretionary wedges with ophiolites and other fragments of oceanic crust, turbidite basins, and island-arc systems. To the west of the Sikhote-Alin–Northern Sakhalin belt and orthogonally, the previously consolidation structures include the Bureya–Jiamusi–Khanka fragment of the orogenic belt of the Late Cambrian–Early Ordovician consolidation of the Late Proterozoic–Cambrian complexes. Within this belt, four isolated outcrops of the Heilongjiang complex are mapped. This complex combines metamorphic rocks of the epidote–amphibolite and glaucophane–schist facies and represents a fragment of a Jurassic accretionary wedge. It was assumed that these outcrops marked a suture; in particular, they represent the remains of the closed Mudanjiang paleoocean, separating the original Jiamusi terrane (and the Bureya–Jiamusi–Khanka belt) located to the west of Central Asia structures. This paper provides data that indicate that the Heilongjiang complex does not mark a suture, but is an underground near-horizontal continuation of the marginal continental accretionary wedge of the Nadanhada–Bikin terrane (flat subduction model) brought to the surface at the antiform bending site. The unity of the compared parts of the accretionary wedge is emphasized by the close matrix ages, the similarity of detritus zircon populations, and similar composition and age of allochthonous inclusions (limestone, chert, Late Paleozoic, and Early Mesozoic basalt). One important common feature is that Late Paleozoic and Early Mesozoic basalts from allochthonous inclusions occur as the N-MORB and OIB types in both cases, without any suprasubduction volcanism traces in the matrix. The Heilongjiang complex forms, according to this interpretation, a tectonic window among the more ancient structures of the Jiamusi terrane. There is no need to assume the existence of a Mudanjiang Ocean to explain the formation of the Heilongjiang complex. The structural features of this complex and its bedding conditions can be explained by the flat subduction processes of the Pacific slab in the Jurassic and its deformation in the Early Cretaceous. In the Balkans, the Serbo-Macedonian Unit (SMU), Serbia, is thrust bounded by the composite Tethyan Vardar Zone and the Carpatho-Balkanides. The SMU actually emerges from beneath the Neoalpine Miocene-Pliocene deposits. Both provenance and geodynamic position of the SMU are poorly known and still debated. This paper reviews the data hitherto published and includes some new field data interpretations. The SMU is composed of a Neoproterozoic-Cambrian high-grade (para- and ortho-) gneiss with peraluminous magmatic arc components (560-470 Ma). The SMU is in the contact with Neoproterozoic upper Ordovician-Carboniferous low-grade metasedimentary succession of an accretionary wedge assembly represented by the Supragetic basement. The SMU basement became folded, sheared and metamorphosed around 490-450 Ma. Paleomagnetic data point to high southern latitudes and a peri-Gondwanan position of the SMU at that time, which concurs with glaciomarine evidence recorded from the upper Ordovician sediments at the base of an accretionary wedge succession. Based on the published data and field survey in the Stalać region, we correlate the SMU with the pre-Mesozoic gneiss terrane exposed in the Strona-Ceneri zone of the Alps. This terrane, identified as the Cenerian orogen of the Alaskan subduction type, developed at an active margin of Gondwana during middle Ordovician times. The SMU basement, with augen and migmatitic gneisses and arc-related peraluminous magmatic bodies, developed at this margin as part of the Cenerian belt or its equivalent. Such an orogenic edifice proved transient and in the earliest Silurian the SMU fragments drifted away being bound for Baltica (amalgamated Moesian microplate and Danubian terrane) to which they became accreted in the Carboniferous and included in the southern European branch of the Variscan orogen (Marginal Dacides/Carpatho-Balkanides). Despite considerable Variscan and Alpine reworking, the pre-Variscan, Cenerian-type crustal assembly along with an inferred boundary between the magmatic arc and the accretionary wedge, accompanied by back-arc/forearc deposits, are still decipherable in the Western Balkan countries. It is generally accepted that oceanic plate subduction has occurred along the eastern margin of Asia since about 500 Ma ago. Therefore, the Japanese Islands have a >500 Ma history of oceanic plate subduction in their geological records. In this paper, the accretionary history of the Japanese Islands is divided into six main stages based on the mode and nature of tectonic events and the temporal gaps in the development of accretionary processes. In the first stage, oceanic plate subduction and accretion started along the margin of Gondwana. After detachment of the North and South China blocks in Devonian time, accretionary complexes developed along island arcs offshore of the South and North China blocks. After the formation of back arc basins such as the Japan Sea, accretionary processes occurred only along the limited convergent margin, e.g. Nankai Trough. Detrital zircons of sandstones revealed the accretionary history of Japan. An evaluation of a comprehensive dataset on detrital zircon populations shows that the observed temporal gaps in the development of the Japanese accretionary complexes were closely related to the intensity of igneous activity in their provenance regions. Age distributions of detrital zircons in the accretionary complexes of Japan change before and after the Middle Triassic period, when the collision of the South and North China blocks occurred. The southern West Junggar terrane in the south‐western Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is mainly composed of accretionary complexes and characterized by widespread outcrops of ophiolitic mélanges in the Barleik, Mayile, and Tangbale (BMT) areas, representing the site of consumption of the Junggar–Balkhash Ocean. However, due to a lack of comprehensive synthesis of the ophiolitic mélanges, the early evolution of the Junggar–Balkhash Ocean remains poorly understood. This paper first focuses on the little‐known Barleik ophiolitic blocks and associated pillow basalts and then integrates the Barleik, Mayile, and Tangbale ophiolitic mélanges into one model. Mineral and whole‐rock chemistry suggests that the Barleik ophiolitic blocks, including serpentinized dunite, clinopyroxenite, and gabbro, show supra‐subduction zone (SSZ) affinities, as indicated by high Cr# values (76–78) in spinels and strong depletion in Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf, whereas the Barleik pillow basalts are alkaline and have high TiO2 contents (2.82–3.42 wt.%) and Nb–Ta enrichment, similar to ocean‐island basalt (OIB) lavas. Combined with published chronological and chemical data from ophiolites, metamorphic rocks, and arc plutons, we propose that the BMT Ediacaran to middle Cambrian ophiolitic gabbros were formed in a SSZ environment, implying a single Mariana‐type arc system within the Junggar–Balkhash Ocean, which was coeval with an Andean‐type arc system in the Kyrgyz North Tianshan, supporting an archipelagic model for the south‐western CAOB. By contrast, the BMT OIB‐type basalts are early Silurian in age, much younger than the SSZ‐type ophiolites, and can be interpreted as relicts of seamounts. Thus, a model involving the Ediacaran to Ordovician intra‐oceanic subduction and late Silurian to Early Devonian seamount accretion is helpful for clarifying the different components of the accretionary complexes in the southern West Junggar terrane. The Altai‐Junggar‐Tianshan collage in southern Altaids is an important metallogenic domain in Central Asia that contain world‐class copper‐iron‐nickel deposits. As an accretionary‐type metallogenic system, the metallogenic processes of the Altai‐Junggar‐Tianshan collage is essential in understanding the genetic mechanism of ore deposits in general. Here in this paper we present a brief introduction to the project on the western part of the Southern Altaids, entitled "The deep structure and metallegenic processes of the North China accretionary metallogenic systems". This project mainly focuses on the deep structure and metallogenic background of the Altai‐Junggar‐Tianshan collage by integrated studies from field geology, structural mapping, geochemistry and geophysical exploration. Multiple new geological and geophysical methods will be applied to make transparency of the Kalatongke and Kalatage ore clusters. This will update our understanding of the geodynamic processes of metallogenesis and lead to the development and foundation of new metallogenic theories in accretionary orogens. In the various stages from life chemistry to biological evolution, major geological events are usually accompanied by the extinction of species and the gestation of new life, which are important factors that determine the direction of ecological evolution. The study of the terrane accretive orogeny during the Jinning–Chengjiang period has had a great impact on the crustal rock composition, the atmospheric environment and the water circulation system, etc. The living environment of the primitive biological community has undergone tremendous changes; for example, the crust produced a superimposed contraction and extensional rift effect, resulting in collisional magmatic activity and strong earthquakes, and a large number of species became extinct. In turn, biological activity and organic matter also contributed significantly to migration. Given the periodic cycle of geological processes, and being fully utilized by nature, the origin and evolution of life grow in a spiral. Based on the analysis of the petrochemical composition characteristics of metamorphic volcanic–sedimentary rock series and intermediate-acid intrusive rocks in Pengguan terrane, this paper proposes that the subduction mechanism of oceanic crust in the study area is formed by the NW subduction of the Longmenshan–Anning oceanic crust on the SE side. The relationship between the average change of chemical composition of the diabase in the Masongling and Xinkaidong areas and around the world, ion radius and compressibility, shows that when the element ion compressibility is less than 4.46 compared with the average world value, the oxide content of Si, Ti, Al and P is markedly lower, while when it is equal to or greater than 4.46, the oxide content of Fe, Mn, Mg and K increases, as opposed to that of Ca and Na. In the eastern part of the Karoo Basin of South Africa, the sedimentary record of the Late Palaeozoic Ice Age, the Dwyka Group, consists of an up to 200 m thick accumulation of massive to crudely stratified diamictite occasionally interstratified with siltstone, sandstone and conglomerate horizons. Three distinct sedimentary units, separated by intervening glacial erosion surfaces, are viewed as ice‐margin fluctuation sequences. The lowermost one, resting on highly uneven, glacially abraded Archaean basement, has been interpreted as a grounding zone wedge deposited after the retreat and stabilization of the ice margin after the inundation of the Karoo Basin. The grounding zone wedge interpretation is based on its thickness (up to 100 m), the dominance of diamictite, and its facies assemblage and inferred depositional processes (rain‐out of debris, dropstone dumping, mass and debris flow, till). Overlying the grounding zone wedge, deposits are sedimentary units interpreted as glaciofluvial or ice‐contact delta and grounding zone wedges, respectively. By analogy with Quaternary sedimentary sequences, deposition of the Dwyka Group in the study area might have been very rapid (tens to hundreds of thousand years) and may hence correlate with the ultimate deglacial sequence of the Western Karoo Basin, as both successions are covered by the postglacial Ecca Group. Although commonly observed and imaged on modern, high‐latitude continental shelves, grounding zone wedges have never been interpreted in the ancient geological record. The Kaiyuan tectonic mélange makes up the western part of the Kaiyuan–Yanji Accretionary Complex Belt, NE China, and there has been a long‐standing controversy about its age and tectonic setting. In this paper, we present new zircon U–Pb ages and geochemical data for the mafic rocks of the Lujiapuzi Formation in the Kaiyuan tectonic mélange, and these data provide insights into the tectonic setting during the late Paleozoic and the evolutionary history of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean in the eastern segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). SHRIMP U–Pb dating of zircons from samples of albite–actinolite schist and amphibolite yielded a crystallization age of 258 ± 5.5 Ma for the protoliths, suggesting that the protoliths formed during the late Permian. The albite–actinolite schists and amphibolites have similar geochemical characteristics, and they represent metamorphosed basaltic volcanic rocks. Major, rare earth and trace element data show that the mafic rocks have a close affinity with mid‐ocean ridge basalt. REE petrogenetic modelling indicates that the primary magma was generated through the partial melting of a mixed garnet‐ and spinel‐bearing mantle source, and assimilated crustal material and underwent crystal fractionation during ascent. The geochemical features and inherited/xenocrystic zircons in the mafic samples indicate that they formed in a tectonic setting similar to the back‐arc basin. These new findings, together with other previously published data, indicate that the Paleo‐Asian Ocean still existed in the eastern segment of the CAOB during the late Permian to Early Triassic. The quality of geological mapping lies in reasonable determination of mapping units of different levels. The compositions of subduction accretionary complex zone are mainly derived from the structure-formation of oceanic lithosphere in ocean basin under various tectonic environments, including oceanic ridge formation (ophiolite), abyssal plain formation, oceanic island-seamount formation, intra-oceanic arc formation, trench formation and high-ultrahigh pressure rock formation. Besides, there are also rifted block formation, high-ultrahigh pressure rock formation, continental margin magmatic arc formation and wedge-top basin formation derived from continental lithosphere which are mixed into the subduction accretionary complex zone. Therefore, it is basic to identify and determine the geological formations of different sources for mapping unit division and compilation. Based on the scientific objective of distinguishing different material sources in subduction accretionary complex zone, the mapping units are divided into three levels: subduction accretionary complex zone (first-level unit), slice (second-level unit) and rock block and matrix (third-level unit) which are divided and named with the requirements for code, coloring and lithologic pattern. The paper briefly describes the requirements of graphic expression of structural deformation in subduction accretionary complex zone, and emphasizes that the structural deformations during subduction and collision are the two major deformation periods, thus the mapping must be reasonable and accurate. • The steepest sidewall (with slopes of 25.75° and 40.47°) of E Canyon in the eastern Makran accretionary prism was found. • The segmentation features of sedimentation and erosion of E Canyon was revealed. • The evolution model of gas hydrate accumulation in the development area of E Canyon was established. Seven shelf-incising submarine canyon systems are developed in the Makran accretionary prism, offshore Pakistan. This paper uses multibeam bathymetric data and multichannel seismic profiles to study the geomorphologic and infilling characteristics of E Canyon in the east of accretionary prism. The E Canyon extends nearly north–south from the upper slope to lower slope, the bottom of the canyon is located in 1000 to 3000 m water depth, the main axis extends about 55 km, and the width varies from 5 to 9 km. The E Canyon shows U-shaped concave features in the northern cross-section view and V-shaped concave features in the southern cross-section view. Two continuous erosion pools are developed at the fifth and third ridges of the southern segment, respectively. The steepest sidewall (with slopes of 25.75° and 40.47°) of E Canyon was found near the third ridge. The filling sequence of coarse channel lags, slump debris flows, stacked channel sands and mass transported deposits and turbidite deposits from bottom to top is developed in the northern segment of the canyon. Strong erosion is developed in the southern part of the canyon and there is no sedimentation inside. On the abyssal plain, the continuation of the E Canyon is clearly erosive. Our preliminary analysis shows that the factors controlling the evolution of E Canyon may include sediment gravity flow, tectonic activity, sea-level change, climate and onshore rivers activity. The correlation between evolution of E Canyon and gas hydrates was explored, and it is believed that the erosion of E Canyon plays a destructive role in hydrate accumulation. At the same time, the destruction of hydrate-bearing layer induces the escape and leakage of hydrocarbon-bearing fluid, leading to the development of pockmark on the sidewalls of E Canyon. The East Kunlun Orogenic Belt (EKOB), northwestern China, recording long-term and multiple accretionary and collisional events of the Tethyan Ocean, belongs to a high-pressure to ultra-high-pressure (HP-UHP) metamorphic belt that underwent complex metamorphic overprinting in the early Paleozoic. In this contribution, we carry out an integrated study, including field investigations, petrographic observations, whole-rock analyses, zircon U-Pb dating, and P-T condition modeling using THERMOCALC in the NCKFMASHTO system for the eclogites, especially for the newly discovered UHP eclogite in the eastern part of EKOB. The eclogites exhibit geochemistry ranging from normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB) to enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt (E-MORB). Zircons from the eclogites yield metamorphic ages of 416–413 Ma, indicating the eclogite facies metamorphism. Coesite inclusions in garnet and omphacite and quartz exsolution in omphacite and pseudosection calculation suggest that some eclogites experienced UHP eclogite facies metamorphism. The eclogites from the eastern part of EKOB record peak conditions of 29–33 kbar/705–760 °C, first retrograde conditions of 10 kbar at 9.5–12.5 kbar/610–680 °C, and second retrograde conditions at ~6 kbar/<600 °C. New evidence of the early Paleozoic UHP metamorphism in East Kunlun is identified in our study. Thus, we suggest that these eclogites were produced by the oceanic crust subducting to the depth of 100 km and exhumation. The presence of East Gouli and Gazhima eclogites in this study and other eclogites (430–414 Ma) in East Kunlun record the final closure of the local branch ocean of the Proto-Tethys and the evolution from subduction to collision. The geologic history of the Western Tianshan region is important for understanding the evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt and accretionary orogenesis. Paleozoic and Mesozoic igneous rocks are present along the northern margin of the Yili Block; however, studies of Paleozoic subduction and collisional events have been relatively limited. Published geochronologies of Middle Devonian magmatic rocks in this region are also lacking. Therefore, this study analyzed the zircon U–Pb ages and major and trace elemental compositions of three granite types collected from Biezhentao Mountain (Wenquan County, Western Tianshan). The medium-grained diorite (384.1 ± 3.6 Ma) and diorite–porphyrite (382 ± 3.2 Ma) are silica-rich, weakly peraluminous, alkali-rich, enriched in large-ion lithophile elements, depleted in high field strength elements, and belong to the calc–alkaline series, with A-type granite characteristics. The monzogranite (423.3 ± 9.4 Ma) exhibits A-type granite characteristics and belongs to the peraluminous calc–alkaline series. The findings suggest that the granitoids recorded two stages of tectonomagmatism during the Middle Devonian–Late Silurian. The Middle Devonian medium-grained diorite and diorite–porphyrite formed in a back-arc extensional setting, whereas the Late Silurian monzogranite formed in an active continental margin setting during the subduction of the North Tianshan Ocean. These results provide insights into the tectonic and magmatic processes that occurred during the evolution of the Western Tianshan region and the formation and evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. The detrital zircon records significant information in the 'source‐sink' system. With the application of in situ laser ablation technology, a large number of high‐quality detrital zircon data have been published since 2000. In this study, a total of 41,342 detrital zircon U–Pb ages and 6,129 Hf isotopes were compiled from the published literatures of the Middle East (Iranian and Arabian plates). Through data filtering and recalculation, valid data were employed for further analysis. The detrital zircons from the Middle East show a Cambrian–Precambrian age population of 500–1,000 Ma, with a major age peak of ~620 Ma and dispersed εHf(t) values of −35 to +20. The Alborz Mountains and central Iran terrane show a Permo–Triassic age range of 200–300 Ma. The Mesozoic–Cenozoic detrital zircons are mostly occurred in the Zagros orogenic belt and Makran accretionary complex, with three obvious age ranges of 145–180 Ma, 80–110 Ma and 15–65 Ma. The Mesozoic zircons yield positive εHf(t) values, while Cenozoic zircons have varied εHf(t) values. This database allows for the further exploration of the provenance analysis and application in constraining the timing of the major tectonic events in the Middle East, and may also help to explore the affinities of plates, thus guiding future palaeogeographic research efforts. In the recent decades, the Mekong River Delta has suffered quite significant impacts of climate change. Fluctuations of weather elements and sea level rises have caused adverse changes, namely: the appearance of unusual high and low levels of annual floods, more and more intense storms, more severe droughts, forest fires, river erosion, cyclones, and tidal surges appear increasingly more dangerous. Traditional adaptation measures to the environmental conditions may be unsuitable in the context of climate change in the Mekong River Delta. Geotechnical design is evolving to adopt the limit state design (LSD) philosophy, also known as reliability-based design (RBD). This is evident by its inclusion in geotechnical design codes (e.g. Eurocode 7). Partial factors are often used in design codes to overcome the difficulty in performing probabilistic analysis suggested by the RBD. The increasing use of RBD suggests a need to investigate the applicability of design with partial factors for various rock engineering structures; this paper will investigate their application in the design of support for a rock wedge in an underground opening. The paper provides a critical overview of the design philosophy of RBD, the components necessary for its application, and the methods by which the probability of failure may be computed. In addition, it discusses how partial factors are calibrated from RBD and how code development can be subsequently performed. The Kiselyovka-Manoma accretionary complex formed at the end of the Early Cretaceous during subduction of the Pacific oceanic plate underneath the Khingan-Okhotsk active continental margin along the east of Eurasia. It is composed of Jurassic-Early Cretaceous oceanic chert, siliceous mudstone, and limestone that include a significant amount of basic volcanic rocks. The known and newly obtained data on the petrogeochemistry of the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous basalt from various parts of the accretionary complex are systemized in the paper. Based on the comprehensive analysis of these data, the possible geodynamic settings of the basalt are considered. The petrogeochemical characteristics provide evidence for the formation of basalt in different parts of the oceanic floor within the spreading ridge, as well as on oceanic islands far from the ridge. The basalts of oceanic islands are mostly preserved in the accretionary complex. The compositional variations of the basalts may be controlled by the different thickness of the oceanic lithosphere on which they formed. This paper summarizes the geochronological, geochemical and zircon Hf isotopic data for Mesozoic granitoids within the Erguna Massif, NE China, and discusses the spatial-temporal variation of zircon Hf isotopic compositions, with the aim of constraining the accretion and reworking processes of continental crust within the Erguna Massif, and shedding light on the crustal evolution of the eastern segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Based on the zircon U-Pb dating results, the Mesozoic granitic magmatisms within the Erguna Massif can be subdivided into five stages: Early-Middle Triassic (249-237 Ma), Late Triassic (229-201 Ma), Early-Middle Jurassic (199-171 Ma), Late Jurassic (155-149 Ma), and Early Cretaceous (145-125 Ma). The Triassic to Early-Middle Jurassic granitoids are mainly I-type granites and minor adakitic rocks, whereas the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous granitoids are mainly A-type granites. This change in magmatism is consistent with the southward subduction of the Mongol-Okhotsk oceanic plate and subsequent collision and crustal thickening, followed by post-collision extension. Zircon Hf isotopic data indicate that crustal accretion of the Erguna Massif occurred in the Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic. Zircon ε( t) values increase gradually over time, whereas two-stage model ( T ) ages decrease throughout the Mesozoic. The latter result indicates a change in the source of granitic magmas from the melting of ancient crust to more juvenile crust. Zircon ε( t) values also exhibit spatial variations, with values decreasing northwards, whereas T ages increase. This pattern suggests that, moving from south to north, there is an increasing component of ancient crustal material within the lower continental crust of the Erguna Massif. Even if at the same latitude, the zircon Hf isotopic compositions are also inconsistent. These results reveal lateral and vertical heterogeneities in the lower continental crust of the Erguna Massif during the Mesozoic, which we use as the basis of a structural and tectonic model for this region. Reconstruction of proportions between juvenile and recycled crust remains challengeable because a big part of juvenile source magmatic rocks formed at intra-oceanic arcs, can be destroyed by surface and tectonic erosion leaving, at best, greywacke sandstones. Such sandstones are typically hosted by accretionary complexes, which study, therefore, is of crucial importance. In this paper we review available geological and micropaleontological data and present first U Pb detrital zircon ages, geochemical data and isotope (Sm Nd, Lu Hf) data from sandstones of the late Cambrian-early Ordovician Zasur'ya accretionary complex (AС) of NW Altai. No island-arc units have ever been reported there. The Zasur'ya AC includes ocean plate stratigraphy (OPS) magmatic and sedimentary rocks of three formations, Listvenny (l. Cambrian), Talitsa (Tremadocian) and Marcheta (Floian), which age was constrained by microfossils. The OPS assemblage includes basalt, pelagic chert and hemipelagic siliceous mudstone and siltstone, and sandstone. We analyzed zircons in five samples. The distributions of U Pb ages of detrital zircons from five samples of sandstones are all unimodal with main peaks at ca. 488 Ma (Listvenny Fm.), 491 Ma (Talitsa Fm.) and 485 Ma (Marcheta Fm.). The Precambrian ages are very few. The maximum deposition ages inferred from the youngest populations of zircon ages are ca. 464 Ma. Compositionally, the sandstones are greywackes or feldspar litharenites. The Listvenny and Talitsa sandstones are higher silicic (SiO 2av. = 68.5 wt%) compared to Marcheta samples (SiO 2av. = 60.5 wt%). The major and trace element features of all sandstones are similar to supra-subduction intermediate-felsic (Listvenny, Talitsa) and mafic-intermediate (Marcheta) magmatic rocks. All samples yielded positive values of zircon ɛHf(t) (+4.3 to +20.1) and bulk-rock ɛNd(t) (+0.6 to +4.8) indicating juvenile magmatic rocks in the provenance. However, the Listvenny and Talitsa samples show lower ɛNd(t) (1.3 and 0.8, respectively) than those of the Marcheta Fm. (4.7). Probably the Zasur'ya sandstones were deposited in a back-arc basin (Listvenny, Talitsa), and fore-arc basin (Marcheta). All Zasur'ya greywacke sandstones were derived by destruction of a single late Cambrian - Early Ordovician intra-oceanic arc. The Zasur'ya intra-oceanic arc was identified in NW Altai for the first time and it represents a new site of juvenile crustal growth in the CAOB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lead isotope values for volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits provide important insights into metal sources and the nature of pre-accretionary tectonostratigraphic terranes and underlying basements. Deposits of this type in New England formed in diverse tectonic settings including volcanic arcs and backarcs, a supra–subduction zone arc, a rifted forearc foreland basin, and a rifted continental margin. Following VMS mineralization on or near the seafloor, components of the tectonostratigraphic assemblages—volcanic ± sedimentary rocks, coeval intrusions, sulfide deposits, and underlying basements—were diachronously accreted to the Laurentian margin during the Paleozoic. Lead isotope data for galena show relatively large ranges for 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb. Evaluation of potential lead sources, using for comparison Pb-isotope data from modern and ancient settings, suggests that principal sources include the mantle, volcanic ± sedimentary rocks, and deeper basement rocks. Integration of the Pb-isotope values with published data such as Nd isotopes for the volcanic rocks and from deep seismic reflection profiles points to the involvement of several basements, including those of Grenvillian, Ganderian, Avalonian, and West African (and (or) Amazonian) affinity. Clustering of Pb-isotope data for VMS deposits within individual Cambrian and Ordovician volcanic and volcanosedimentary settings, delineated by differences in 206Pb/204Pb and µ (238U/204Pb) values, are consistent with lead derivation from at least four and possibly five different tectonostratigraphic assemblages with isotopically distinct basements. Collectively, our Pb-isotope data for New England VMS deposits provide a novel window into the nature of subarc basement rocks during pre-accretionary sulfide mineralization outboard of Laurentia during early Paleozoic time. Subduction accretionary complexes are composed of major and minor structural, stratigraphic, and tectonostratigraphic units. The major architectural units, Accretionary Units (AUs), are bounded by major faults, but differ from terranes in that they may contain units stratigraphically correlative with units in other AUs and they are smaller than the largest terranes. AUs occur in three basic formats – (1) singular sheets or blocks of stratigraphic layers, dismembered formation, or mélange, (2) folded units composed of one or more stratigraphic or block-in-matrix units, and (3) faulted stratigraphic masses (i.e., broken formations). Composite AUs with multiple units and multiple attributes are common. Multiple suites of structures may arise in AUs from progressive early deformation or later superimposed deformational events. AUs may be subdivided through detailed mapping into sub-units such as fault blocks, mélanges, dismembered formations, broken formations, intact formations, and members. Each AU should be defined on the basis of unique characters that derive from a thorough description of the AU, including its distinct rock types and character; and where possible, lithofacies, metamorphic facies, structures, and unit history. Descriptions of partially described AUs from the Franciscan Complex of California and the Miura-Boso area of Japan provide examples of the character of AUs. Ideally, the architecture and history of a subduction complex can be reconstructed by assembling detailed map and text descriptions of the constituent AUs, their 3D-positions, their relationships, and their histories. A two-dimensional model of sediment column geophysics and geochemistry has been adapted to the problem of an accretionary wedge formation, patterned after the margin of the Juan de Fuca plate as it subducts under the North American plate. Much of the model description is given in a companion paper about the application of the model to an idealized passive margin setting; here we build on that formulation to simulate the impact of the sediment deformation, as it approaches the subduction zone, on the methane cycle. The active margin configuration of the model shares sensitivities with the passive margin configuration, in that sensitivities to organic carbon deposition and respiration kinetics, and to vertical bubble transport and redissolution in the sediment, are stronger than the sensitivity to ocean temperature. The active margin simulation shows a complex sensitivity of hydrate inventory to plate subduction velocity, with results depending strongly on the geothermal heat flux. In low heat-flux conditions, the model produces a larger inventory of hydrate per meter of coastline in the passive margin than active margin configurations. Abstract The southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) in South Mongolia consists of continental fragments sutured together by Paleozoic arc magmatism generated by the closing of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). Controversy persists regarding the timing and position of the final amalgamation of the Altai and Tianshan orogenic belts. This paper presents zircon U-Pb data of the Gurvan Sayhan accretionary complex, as well as the overlying sedimentary sequence, and a granite pluton intruding the complex to provide new insights into the Late Paleozoic evolution of South Mongolia. The detrital zircon grains from the Gurvan Sayhan accretionary complex yielded age spectra with predominant peaks at ca. 331 Ma, subdominant peaks at ca. 381, and 500 Ma, indistinct Precambrian peaks at ca. 848 Ma and the youngest group of 318 Ma. The Paleozoic zircon grains are interpreted to be derived from adjacent arc systems formed by the subduction of the PAO, whereas those with the Precambrian ages were possibly from the nearby Hangay and South Gobi microcontinent blocks. The proportion of Precambrian detrital zircon grains in the complex decreases with time, likely suggesting a change in the paleogeography during sedimentation of the complex. Detrital zircon grains from the overlying stratum produced an age spectrum characterized by containing the youngest peak at ca. 293 Ma, although older peaks at ca. 340 Ma and 466 Ma are also present. The granite pluton intruding the accretionary complex has an emplacement age of 292.9 ± 1.3 Ma, similar with the youngest detrital zircon age peak from the overlying stratum, which is interpreted from the post-collisional magmatic rocks. Therefore, our results demonstrate that the final closure of the PAO in southern Mongolia was Late Carboniferous–Early Permian (318–293 Ma), and the Gurvan Sayhan accretionary complex represents the suture zone of the Altai and Tianshan orogenic belts. Abstract The architecture and mechanics of an orogen can be understood in terms of a system of collages that are characterized by a complex assemblage of multiple components, but the fundamental paleogeographic framework and the tectonic relationships between the different components are often insufficiently defined, because of unavailable data. The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) provides an ideal opportunity to address the fundamental framework of paleogeography and tectonic relationships between the diverse and many components in this huge collage. In this paper we review several lines of available evidence, which enable us to propose a new tectonic model of huge roll-back in the formation of the accretionary tectonics of the Mongolian collage in Central Asia. In the early Paleozoic the Mongolia collage comprised the southern Siberian and the Tuva-Mongol Oroclines. The Siberia Craton and the Mongolia collage jointly formed a giant "tadpole-shape" within the Paleo-Asian and Panthanlassic oceans; its head (Siberia) was to the south, and the tail (Tuva-Mongol) to the northwest. The structures and tectonic zonation of the Mongolia collage are characteristic of multiple arcs, which have been separately described in detail in different segments southwards from the Southern Siberia-East Sayan, West Sayan-Gorny Altai-Chara, via the Lake Zone-Junggar-Tianshan, Gobi Altai-Beishan-Alxa, to the Manlay-Hegenshan-Baolidao-Solonker segments. Almost all segments underwent Early Paleozoic to Permian, or even Triassic, frontal subduction and accretion, while rifting in the Late Carboniferous to Permian or Triassic occurred in the outward/oceanward (westward) advancing Mongolian collage. Therefore, we suggest that a huge complex roll-back, active from the Carboniferous to Permian or even to late Triassic, facilitated the formation of the Mongolian collage. The outward multiple roll-back process was compatible and almost coeval with the start of the Tuva-Mongol Orocline and rotation of the Siberian Craton, as confirmed by paleomagnetic and structural data. During the roll-back processes an archipelago paleogeography was formed behind the frontal subduction and accretion, in which independent arcs or terranes were amalgamated or collided to form composite arcs or terranes either simultaneously or at slightly different times. The roll-back process was affected by the collision of the Kazakhstan collage along the Chara and Karamay zones in the Early Permian, the collision of the Tarim Craton along the South Tianshan zone in the Early Permian, the collision of the Dunhuang Block along the Liuyuan zone in the Early Permian-Triassic, the collision of the Alxa block along the Qugan Qulu zone in the Permian, and the collision of the North China Craton along the Solonker zone in the Middle-Late Triassic. The tectonic styles and architecture of accretionary orogenic belts like the CAOB are characterized both by the amalgamation of multiple terranes and by oroclinal bending. The systematic anatomy of the multiple roll-back processes and their interactions with the adjacent collages shed light on the evolving orogenic architecture and the crustal accretionary history of orogens. Abstract The paper presents new isotope geochronological data for several mineral deposits, ore occurrences, and related igneous bodies (plutons and dikes) in the Verkhoyansk-Kolyma folded area, eastern Yakutia. Twenty-one 40Ar/39Ar mica and four U-Pb zircon dates provide the first age constraints on key metallogenic units in the area. The dating results allow correlation between tectonic, magmatic, and metallogenic events. The sampled mineral deposits within the Adycha-Taryn fault zone in the southeastern Verkhoyansk-Chersky orogen apparently formed at the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary during the final phase of the collision between the Siberian (North Asian) craton and the Kolyma-Omolon microcontinent (Kupol'noe deposit and the early metallogenic pulse of the Malotarynskoe deposit, ~ 143-144 Ma) and in the latest Early Cretaceous, in the beginning of the orogen collapse (Tallalakh and Dora-Pil' deposits and the Malotarynskoe late metallogenic pulse, ~ 126 Ma). According to the suggested new classification of metallogenic units, these deposits belong to the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous Yana-Kolyma metallogenic belt. The Kyuchus deposit (~ 106 Ma), the Deputatsky ore cluster (~ 106-113 Ma), and the Khotoidokh deposit (~ 116 Ma) in the northern Verkhoyansk-Kolyma folded area belong to the North Verkhoyansk metallogenic belt. Their origin was associated with accretional and collisional processes that produced the Novosibirsk-Chukotka orogen in the middle Cretaceous. The Mangazeya ore cluster (~ 100 Ma, Early-Late Cretaceous boundary) in the southwestern end of the North Tirekhtyakh magmatic transverse belt belongs to the West Verkhoyansk metallogenic belt. The Nezhdaninskoe, Zaderzhnoe, Kurum, and Kuta deposits of the South Verkhoyansk area (~ 125-120 and ~ 100-95 Ma) can be joined into a single Verkhoyansk-Okhotsk metallogenic belt. The belt resulted from accretion and collision along the East Asian active continental margin and the related formation of the South Verkhoyansk orogen in the Early Cretaceous. [Display omitted] • Late Neoproterozoic ophiolite fragments were discovered in the Irshi area. • The early Paleozoic crust of the middle Great Xing'an Range is an orogenic belt. • Neoproterozoic–early Paleozoic lateral crustal growth occurred in the eastern CAOB. The tectonic affinity of the middle segment of the Great Xing'an Range (GXR) in NE China has become one of the focus issues about the Paleozoic crustal division and tectonic evolution of the eastern segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. In this paper, we identified some ophiolite fragments from the early Paleozoic strata in the Irshi area of the middle segment of the GXR, which was previously thought to be the interior of the Precambrian Xing'an block. These ophiolite fragments and the surrounding deformed clastic rocks together constitute the Irshi ophiolite mélange (IOM). Zircon U-Pb dating reveals that the ophiolites formed during 603–608 Ma, which indicates that there was an oceanic basin during the late Neoproterozoic. The geochemical composition suggests that the ophiolites were formed in a back-arc setting. The youngest group of detrital zircons in the matrix ranges from 435 Ma to 480 Ma. In addition, the IOM was covered unconformably by late Silurian and Devonian strata, and it was thus likely emplaced during the early–middle Silurian. The identification of the IOM eliminated the possibility that the middle segment of the GXR was an independent Precambrian continental block. The spatial–temporal distribution of Proterozoic–early Paleozoic ophiolite, metamorphic complexes, and magmatic and sedimentary rocks in the middle segments of the GXR indicates that the tectonic affinity of the late Neoproterozoic–early Paleozoic crust in this area is an accretionary orogenic belt. This study illustrates the field relationships of jadeitite-bearing block-in-matrix sequences on Syros and Tinos, Cycladic Blueschist Unit, and adds additional U–Pb zircon ages for jadeitites to the geochronological database. The results confirm the importance of Cretaceous (c. 80 Ma) and Eocene (c. 50 Ma) processes in their geological evolution. Interpretations suggesting that the jadeitites were formed by complete metasomatic replacement of a pre-existing rock are not fully supported by field observations. In at least some cases, the formation of jadeitite is likely due to precipitation from Na-Al-Si-rich aqueous fluids, which also caused variable metasomatic alteration of the host rock. Unambiguous age constraints for formation of the Syros and Tinos jadeitites are not available. A relationship to Eocene blueschist facies metamorphism recorded in the associated metamafic rocks seems plausible. However, since high-pressure overprinting of pre-Eocene jadeitite is also conceivable, there is a much larger time window for jadeitite formation, framed by Cretaceous (c. 80–76 Ma) protolith ages of various mélange blocks and the waning stages of blueschist facies metamorphism (c. 40 Ma). Field observations are consistent with the interpretation that the mélange-like occurrences on Syros and Tinos record, to varying extent, multi-stage processes that include detachment of mafic rocks from the subducting plate, local infiltration of Na-Al-Si-rich aqueous fluids, exhumation via a serpentinitic matrix in a subduction channel and reworking of the primary block-in-matrix fabric by sedimentary or tectonic processes during accretionary wedge formation. The Nemiscau subprovince is a metasedimentary rocks-dominated sequence of the Archean eastern Superior Province. It is bounded by the gneissic and tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) rocks-dominated La Grande and Opatica subprovinces. The Nemiscau consists of variably migmatized metasedimentary rocks and felsic to intermediate gneisses and plutonic suites. Mafic-to-ultramafic metavolcanic rocks occur along its northern and southern boundaries. Previous structural and metamorphic studies suggested that it was the result of subduction-related, accretionary and collisional tectonics with adjacent plutonic terranes during the Kenorean orogeny. This study integrates various sets of structural, metamorphic, and U-Pb geochronological data suggesting a long-lasting tectonometamorphic evolution between ca. 2843 and 2598 Ma. Four tectonometamorphic events have been recognized. The first event (D1) is only locally preserved and occurred shortly after the deposition of the oldest volcanic sequences of the Nemiscau (ca. 2756–2736 Ma) under amphibolite facies metamorphic conditions (M1). The kinematic analysis of shear zones bounding the supracrustal sequences of both the Nemiscau and La Grande subprovinces suggests their relative crustal sinking as compared to TTG of the La Grande and Opatica subprovinces, shortly after deposition (at ≤2724 and ≤2706 Ma, respectively). Sedimentation was followed by regional dip-slip-dominated (D2) deformation between ca. 2704 and 2671 Ma, coeval with extensive high-grade granulite facies metamorphism (M2) and anatexis in the Nemiscau subprovince from ca. 2697 to 2685 Ma, followed by exhumation between ca. 2677 and 2671 Ma. This D2 event was followed by regional-scale dextral strike-slip shearing (D3) from ca. 2658 until 2621 Ma at amphibolite facies metamorphism (M3). The youngest deformation event, D4, was accompanied by strain localization along brittle-to-ductile conjugated shear zones and waning crustal cooling from amphibolite to greenschist facies conditions at ca. 2598 Ma and younger. It is suggested that the Nemiscau, La Grande, and Opatica subprovinces represent a single composite terrane, and that their mutual boundaries do not correspond to "collisional sutures" between different crustal blocks or microcontinents. The Nemiscau subprovince is interpreted as a sedimentary sequence unconformably overlying a ca. 2760–2756 Ma (and older) basement made up of volcanic and crosscutting TTG. In terms of tectonic evolution, the overall structural architecture and isotopic ages of the Nemiscau, La Grande, and Opatica subprovinces support a tectonic model in which the vertical transfer of crustal material occurred during the early stages (D2) of regional deformation, which evolved into a predominant lateral crustal flow of the ductile crust during later stages (D3–D4). The recognition of unconformities is important for stratigraphic subdivision and correlation and for determining the timing of tectonic activity and the ocean‐continent transition process. Here, we have identified a Late Palaeozoic disconformity in the Moqinwula area of the northern Junggar Block, NW China. Integrated field relationship observations and sedimentological, biostratigraphical, geochemical and detrital zircon geochronological data, suggest that the underlying Hongliugou Formation is of Devonian age and was deposited in a passive continental margin setting. The overlying Tamugang Formation formed in the Early Carboniferous and was deposited in a foreland basin setting. Integrating the published data and our new work, we suggest a new tectonic evolution model related to the Karamaili ocean‐continent transition process. During the Early Devonian, northward subduction of the Karamaili Ocean plate beneath the East Junggar Belt formed the Yemaquan arc. At this time, a passive margin sequence was deposited on the northern Junggar Block. During the Early Carboniferous, the closure of the Karamaili Ocean resulted from the collision between the Junggar Block and the East Junggar Belt. Foreland basins subsequently developed, forming an extensive unconformity in the accretionary wedge to the north and a disconformity in the relatively rigid and stable Junggar Block to the south. This significant difference in stratigraphic contact relationships confirms that regional convergence‐induced shortening deformation had no significant influence on the northern margin of the Junggar Block, suggesting the existence of a relatively rigid basement, probably an oceanic plateau, under the cover sediments of the Junggar Block. The composite Albian–Eocene orogenic wedge of the northern part of the Inner Western Carpathians (IWC) comprises the European Variscan basement with the Upper Carboniferous–Triassic cover and the Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous sedimentary successions of a large oceanic–continental Atlantic (Alpine) Tethys basin system. This paper presents an updated evolutionary model for principal structural units of the orogenic wedge (i.e., Fatricum, Tatricum and Infratatricum) based on new and published white mica 40Ar/39Ar geochronology and P–T estimates by Perple_X modeling and geothermobarometry. The north-directed Cretaceous collision led to closure of the Jurassic–Early Cretaceous basins, and incorporation of their sedimentary infill and a thinned basement into the Albian–Cenomanian/Turonian accretionary wedge. During this compressional D1 stage, the subautochthonous Fatric structural units, including the present-day higher Infratatric nappes, achieved the metamorphic conditions of ca. 250–400 °C and 400–700 MPa. The collapse of the Albian–Cenomanian/Turonian wedge and contemporary southward Penninic oceanic subduction enhanced the extensional exhumation of the low-grade metamorphosed structural complexes (D2 stage) and the opening of a fore-arc basin. This basin hemipelagic Coniacian–Campanian Couches-Rouges type marls (C.R.) spread from the northern Tatric edge, throughout the Infratatric Belice Basin, up to the peri-Pieniny Klippen Belt Kysuca Basin, thus tracing the south-Penninic subduction. The ceasing subduction switched to the compressional regime recorded in the trench-like Belice "flysch" trough formation and the lower anchi-metamorphism of the C.R. at ca. 75–65 Ma (D3 stage). The Belice trough closure was followed by the thrusting of the exhumed low-grade metamorphosed higher Infratatric complexes and the anchi-metamorphosed C.R. over the frontal unmetamorphosed to lowest anchi-metamorphosed Upper Campanian–Maastrichtian "flysch" sediments at ca. 65–50 Ma (D4 stage). Phengite from the Infratatric marble sample SRB-1 and meta-marl sample HC-12 produced apparent 40Ar/39Ar step ages clustered around 90 Ma. A mixture interpretation of this age is consistent with the presence of an older metamorphic Ph1 related to the burial (D1) within the Albian–Cenomanian/Turonian accretionary wedge. On the contrary, a younger Ph2 is closely related to the late- to post-Campanian (D3) thrust fault formation over the C.R. Celadonite-enriched muscovite from the subautochthonous Fatric Zobor Nappe meta-quartzite sample ZI-3 yielded a mini-plateau age of 62.21 ± 0.31 Ma which coincides with the closing of the Infratatric foreland Belice "flysch" trough, the accretion of the Infratatricum to the Tatricum, and the formation of the rear subautochthonous Fatricum bivergent structure in the Eocene orogenic wedge. The Esenköy pluton which is situated in the East Anatolian Accretionary Complex (EACC) is represented by I-type, metalumino, calc-alkaline, VAG + syn-COLG, gabbro, diorite, quartz diorite, tonalite and granodiorite type rocks. This paper presents the characteristics of the above granitoids on their major, trace, rare earth elements (REE) and their zircon U–Pb dating. Zircon U-Pb crystallisation ages for gabbro, tonalite and granodiorite are 22.3 ± 0.2 Ma, 21.7 ± 0.2 Ma and 21.8 ± 0.2 Ma respectively. Esenköy granitoids show medium and high-K calc-alkaline character, with six exceptional K-poor sample plot in tholeiitic series field. The Rb/Y-Nb/Y diagram for Esenköy granitoids display subduction zone enrichment trend. The data which obtained from major, trace and REE geochemical characteristics and 206 Pb/ 238 U ages indicate that the collision which is take place between Arabian and Eurasian plates along the Bitlis-Zagros suture zone has begun in the Early Miocene (Aquitanian) or before from Early Miocene. Prediction of coastal erosion is a challenging field of research with immense application potential in coastal management plans. In the present study, we simulated coastal morphological changes that occurred under normal and extreme wave conditions during a four-month winter monsoon period along a pocket beach at Yarada near Visakhapatnam city. We used Xbeach, a process-based numerical model to simulate the morphological changes by forcing the model with buoy observed wave parameters. Initial beach topography was generated from DGPS profiles surveyed in November 2014 at regular spatial intervals. Model simulated changes in the beach elevation due to accretion and erosion are validated by DGPS profiles re-surveyed in March 2015. During the four-month period, the net sediment transport at Yarada is generally southerly and becomes strong during high wave activity inducing erosion at the northern sector and accretion at the southern sector. The model has simulated the changes in elevation with a high degree of accuracy for the eroded northern sector, and with some disparity along the accreted southern sector. The swash and nearshore processes responsible for the coastal erosion were found to exist throughout the simulation period and intensified during the high wave condition. The paper highlights the importance of modelling studies for conceptual understanding of the beach response to normal and extreme conditions, and for identifying vulnerable sectors of a beach so that appropriate measures can be taken to prevent coastal erosion and loss of land. The Tertiary‐Piedmont Basin (NW Italy) is an episutural basin that developed from the late Eocene on the Alps–Apennines tectonic junction. Several coeval geodynamic processes, including the loading and exhumation of the Western Alps, the outward migration of the Apennine accretionary wedge and the opening of the Liguro‐Provençal rift basin, controlled the basin evolution. We integrate fluid‐inclusion microthermometry, low‐temperature thermochronology and burial history with numerical modelling to constrain the palaeo‐geothermal gradients required and evaluate the mechanisms that governed the basin thermal history. Apatite fission‐track and (U‐Th‐Sm)/He analyses of the basal late Eocene turbidites show reset ages of ca. 25 and 20 Ma, respectively, which require temperatures to be >120°C. Homogenization temperatures up to ca. 130°C from fluid inclusion analyses from authigenic minerals confirm the thermochronometric data, supporting a significant post‐depositional heating in the lower sequence of the basin. Stratigraphic reconstructions and decompaction of the basin fill indicate that the maximum burial experienced by the basal strata at 25 Ma is 2.3 ± 0.1 km, which is not sufficient to reset the AFT thermochronometric system when applying a typical geothermal gradient (ca. 20–30°C/km). An elevated geothermal gradient of 45 ± 5°C/km is thus necessary to explain the thermochronometric dates and the elevated thermal signature at shallow depths. 2D numerical simulations indicate that such an elevated palaeo‐geothermal gradient can be best explained by mantle upwelling, consistent with crustal thinning caused by the inception of the Liguro‐Provençal rift basin and related outward migration of the Alpine and Apennine fronts during the Oligocene. Deforming belts in the Arabian‐Nubian Shield (ANS) are classified into (1) suture‐related belts, including arc–arc and arc‐continental, and (2) post‐accretionary systems, including N‐trending compression zones and NW‐trending strike‐slip faults. Terrane accretion took place in the ANS between 800 and 700 Ma, along arc–arc sutures. Such sutures are directed from E to NE in the northern part of the ANS, and from N to NE in the south, and are aligned in the north and east with N‐ or S‐verging ophiolitic nappes, or in the south with W‐verging nappes. The Asir, Hijaz, and Midyan terranes formed the Western Arabian shield by 715 Ma. The Afif terrane collided with the Hijaz and Asir terranes between 680 and 640 Ma, terminating the subduction along the Nabitah suture. Subduction began west of the Al Amar arc near the margin of the Ar Rayn terrane at 670 Ma. Afif and Ar Rayn terranes collided along the Al Amar‐Idsas suture about 640 Ma, producing the Idsas orogeny that initiated the major faulting and folding. Strike‐slip faults and upright folds related to oblique convergence between terranes and/or post‐accretionary systems deform the southern sutures. The eastern and western boundaries of the ANS are marked by arc‐continental sutures and characterized by N‐trending deformation belts that formed at 750–650 Ma when the ANS collided with East and West Gondwana. Accretionary processes at mid‐ocean ridge segments with low magma input have seldom been investigated over the long term. The evolution of such magma‐starved segments over time is still largely unknown. We present a study on the structure and evolution of the southernmost intra‐transform ridge segment of the St. Paul Transform Fault System in the Equatorial Mid‐Atlantic Ridge, based on new bathymetry, gravity, and rock sampling data. We show that this area evolves differently from previously described tectonics along ridge segments of similar spreading rate. On the flanks of the axial ridge segment, we observe a succession of structures exhumed by detachment faulting, evolving from east‐facing, long‐lived, corrugated oceanic core complexes (∼6 Ma ago), to short‐lived detachment faults exposing lower crust and mantle rocks and facing alternatively east and west in the more recent part of the segment. The oldest detachment faults have been repeatedly split and partially transferred to the opposite flank through the formation of new detachments into the footwall. The terminations of three old, east‐facing detachments are observed on the east flank of the segment. The westward relocations of the plate boundary appear to compensate for the asymmetry of accretion through detachment faulting, overall creating the same amount of lithosphere on both flanks of the ridge. We interpret the observed changes in the time of the accretionary processes to reflect a decrease of the melt supply over the last ∼6 Myr. Plain Language Summary: The generation of new seafloor at mid‐ocean ridges where cold underlying mantle delivers low magma supply has not been investigated over the long term. Here we present the analysis of new bathymetry, gravity, and rock sampling data over such a ridge segment located within the St. Paul Transform Fault system in the Equatorial Mid‐Atlantic Ridge, which allowed us to bring constraints on its structure and evolution over the last ∼6 Myr. We show that this area evolves differently from previously described ridge segments of similar spreading rate. We observe the remnants of very large normal faults called detachment faults, which have been active for very long times, forming domes called oceanic core complexes. The fault surfaces have been dissected by further extensional deformation, until the plate motion became accommodated along a new detachment fault formed west of the previous plate boundary. The emergence lines of the detachment faults are observed on the eastern flank of the ridge segment. We also observe a change in time of the structures, from typical oceanic core complexes to shorter ridges formed by the exhumation of mantle rocks. We interpret these changes to possibly reflect a decrease in the melt supply in the last 6 Myr. The International Ocean Discovery Program cored five sites during Expeditions 372 and 375 to investigate the Hikurangi margin, offshore Poverty Bay, North Island, New Zealand. Trench‐wedge deposits were recovered at Site U1520, and the frontal accretionary prism was cored at Site U1518. Based on X‐ray diffraction analyses of the clay‐sized fraction, illite and smectite are the dominant clay minerals. Compositional scatter is unusually large, and a well‐defined mixing trend is evident between illite‐rich and smectite‐rich end members. The proportion of smectite ranges from 9 to 59 wt.% at Site U1518 and from 12 to 62 wt.% at Site U1520. Nearby slope deposits at Sites U1517 and U1519 are more homogeneous, with consistently higher proportions of smectite. The East Cape Current is probably responsible for transporting smectite‐rich suspensions towards the south‐west from sources that include the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Illite‐rich muds require different sources and different routing paths to the trench. Some suspended sediment probably originated in the Waipaoa watershed on the North Island, entering the trench via Māhia Canyon. Other gravity flows probably started in Kaikōura Canyon or Cook Strait and moved towards the north‐east, down the trench's axial channel. The influence of turbidity currents on clay composition changes with water depth, as do the effects of reworking by contour currents and the role of passive hemipelagic settling. The broad continuum of clay compositions in the trench is enhanced by variable amounts of mixing among multiple ocean currents and fluctuating durations of suspension within a bottom nepheloid layer. That complexity deviates from the paradigm of turbidite‐dominated trench wedges. The margin's compositional diversity also complicates the goal of predicting or modelling three‐dimensional variations in frictional, geotechnical and hydrogeological properties. SW Yunnan of China constituted part of the northern margin of Gondwana facing the proto-Tethys ocean in the early Paleozoic. However, the evolution of the region and its relationship with the accretionary orogenism have been poorly established. This paper reports a set of new zircon U-Pb age data and whole-rock major oxides, elemental and Sr-Nd isotopic data for early Paleozoic metavolcanic rocks from the previously defined Lancang Group and reveals the development of an Ordovician suprasubduction zone in SW Yunnan. Zircon U-Pb ages of 462 ± 6 and 454 ± 27 Ma for two representative samples indicate eruption of the volcanic rocks in the Late Ordovician. Geochemical data for the metavolcanic rocks together with other available data indicate a calc-alkaline affinity with high AlO (13.04-18.77 wt%) and low TiO (0.64-1.00 wt%). They have Mg-numbers ranging from 62 to 50 with SiO of 53.57-69.10 wt%, compositionally corresponding to the high-Mg andesitic rocks. They display enrichments in LREEs and LILEs with significant Eu negative anomalies ( δEu = 0.20-0.33), and depletions in HFSEs, similar to arc volcanic rocks. Their initial Sr/Sr ratios range from 0.721356 to 0.722521 and εNd( t) values from −7.63 to −7.62 with Nd model ages of 2.06-2.10 Ga. Integration of ages and geochemical data with available geological observations, we propose the presence of Ordovician magmatism related to proto-Tethyan evolution in SW Yunnan and the metaigneous rocks formed in an island-arc setting. The Mesozoic strata, within the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone in central Tibet, recorded critical information about the subduction-accretion processes of the Bangong-Nujiang Ocean prior to the Lhasa-Qiangtang collision. This paper reports detailed field observations, petrographic descriptions, sandstone detrital zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic analyses from an accretionary complex (preserved as Mugagangri Group) and the unconformably overlying Shamuluo Formation near Gaize. The youngest detrital zircon ages, together with other age constraints from literature, suggest that the Mugagangri Group was deposited during late Triassic-early Jurassic, while the Shamuluo Formation was deposited during late Jurassic-early Cretaceous. Based on the differences in lithology, age and provenance, the Mugagangri Group is subdivided into the upper, middle and lower subunits. These units are younging structurally downward/southward, consistent with models of progressive off-scrapping and accretion in a southward-facing subduction complex. The upper subunit, comprising mainly quartz-sandstone and siliceous mud/shale, was deposited in abyssal plain environment close to the Qiangtang passive margin during late Triassic, with sediments derived from the southern Qiangtang block. The middle and lower subunits comprise mainly lithic-quartz-sandstone and mud/shale, containing abundant ultramafic/ophiolitic fragments. The middle subunit, of late Triassic-early Jurassic age, records a transition in tectono-depositional setting from abyssal plain to trench-wedge basin, with sudden influx of sediments sourced from the central Qiangtang metamorphic belt and northern Qiangtang magmatic belt. The appearance of ultramafic/ophiolitic fragments in the middle subunit reflects the subduction initiation. The lower subunit was deposited in a trench-wedge basin during early Jurassic, with influx of Jurassic-aged zircons originating from the newly active southern Qiangtang magmatic arc. The lower subunit records the onset of arc magmatism related to the northward subduction of the Bangong-Nujiang Ocean. The Shamuluo Formation, comprising mainly lithic-feldspar-sandstone with limestone interlayers, was deposited in a post-collisional residual-sea or pre-collisional trench-slope basin, with sediments derived entirely from the Qiangtang block.
