Timely and rapid detection of antibiotic residues in the environment is conducive to safeguarding human health and promoting an ecological virtuous cycle. A foldable paper-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was successfully developed for the detection of ampicillin (AMP) based on glutathione/zirconium dioxide hollow nanorods/aptamer (GSH@ZrO 2 HS@apt) modified cellulose paper as a reactive zone with laser direct-writing lead sulfide/cadmium sulfide/graphene (PbS/CdS/LIG) as photoelectrode and cobalt hydroxide (CoOOH) as a photoresist material. Initially, AMP was introduced into the paper-based reaction zone as a biogate aptamer, which specifically recognized the target and then left the ZrO 2 HS surface, releasing glutathione (GSH) encapsulated inside. Subsequently, the introduction of GSH into the reaction region and etching of CoOOH nanosheets to expose the PbS/CdS/LIG photosensitive material increased photocurrent. Under optimal conditions, the paper-based PEC biosensor showed a linear response to AMP in the range of 5.0 - 2 × 10 4 pM with a detection limit of 1.36 pM (S/N = 3). Counterfeiting has caused great concern all over the world. What's more, the fluorescent materials play an important role in technological research and development for high-security. In this work, lead-metal-organic framework (Pb-MOF) and perovskite (MAPbBr 3 ) were used in papers to achieving fluorescence counterfeiting. Pb-MOF, as the template or precursor of MAPbBr 3 , were in-situ generated on the surface of cellulose fibers (CFs) to preparing into hand sheets (Pb-MOF@CFs). Through the analysis of experimental results, it was found that ligands, reaction systems, addition sequences of drugs, time, etc. would affect the deposition of Pb-MOF on the surface of CFs. Using CH 3 NH 3 Br (MABr) as the anti-counterfeiting ink to write on Pb-MOF@CFs, the orange writing leaped across the paper, which caused by Pb in Pb-MOF chemically reacting with MABr forming MAPbBr 3 . The orange writing displayed green fluorescence under 365 nm ultraviolet lamp excitation. The orange writing with green fluorescence could be extinguished and reconstructed, which had promise for reuse. In addition, fluorescent security papers (MAPbBr 3 @Pb-MOFs@CFs) were prepared by immersing Pb-MOF@CFs in MABr solution. The fluorescence of MAPbBr 3 @Pb-MOFs@CFs opened when the surface of it was scraped under 365 nm ultraviolet lamp. This unique fluorescence property was very important in improving the security of products. A simple and rapid distance paper-based analytical device (dPAD) for the detection of lead (Pb) in foods is proposed herein. The assay principle is based on competitive binding between carminic acid (CA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) to Pb in a food sample. The paper channels were pre-immobilized with PEI, before reacting with a mixture of the sample and CA. Pb can strongly bind to the CA; hence, the length of the red color deposition on the flow channel decreased as a lower amount of free CA bound to PEI. The dPAD exhibited good linear correlation, with ranges of 5-100 µg·mL -1 ( R 2 = 0.974) of Pb. Although, the limit of detection (LOD) of this platform was rather high, at 12.3 µg·mL -1 , a series of standard additions (8.0, 9.0, and 10.0 µg·mL -1 ) can be used to interpret the cutoff of Pb concentrations at higher or lower than 2 µg·mL -1 . The presence of common metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, nickel, and zinc did not interfere with the color distance readout. The validity of the developed dPAD was demonstrated by its applicability to screen the contamination of Pb in century egg samples. The results obtained from the dPAD are in accordance with the concentration measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) ( n = 9). In conclusion, this proposed dPAD, combined with the standard addition method, could be applied for screening Pb contamination in food matrices. This platform is, therefore, potentially applicable for field measurements of Pb in developing countries, because it is cheap and rapid, and it requires no significant laborious instruments.

The condensation product (L) of 4,4'-methylenedianiline and p-anisaldehyde acts as colorimetric sensor for Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ ions. On interaction with Cu 2+ , ethanolic solution of L changes its color to brown while it becomes light pink on interaction with Pb 2+ . Interaction of Al 3+ with L coated paper strip emits bright blue fluorescence. Metal ions like Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , Li + , K + , Na + , Mn 2+ , Al 3+ , Hg 2+ , Co 2+ , Pb 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ , Fe 3+ do not interfere the paper strip sensor. The fluorescent intensity of L in ethanol is quenched 25 times by Pb 2+ ion. The interaction between L and Pb 2+ is reversible and the detection limit of Pb 2+ is 10 -6  M. The binding constant and stoichiometry of binding between L and Pb 2+ was calculated to be 10 4.8 and 1:2. Theoretical calculations show that the binding of the metal ions to L are favorable and the fluorescence of L is due to π → π* transition.

In this study, a simple paper-based aptasensor has been developed for the ultrasensitive detection of lead (Pb 2+ ) ion within about 10 min. The aptasensor has been successfully designed by taking advantages of the Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) process and the super fluorescence quenching property of graphene oxide (GO) sheet. The sensing mechanism of the aptasensor is based on the conformational switch of the Pb 2+ -specific aptamer from a random coil to a G-quadruplex structure. An injection of Pb 2+ on the paper-based platform induces the release of the specific aptamer from the GO surface that recovers the fluorescence emission. Under the optimal experimental conditions, there is a good linear relationship between the fluorescence recovery and the Pb 2+ concentration in the ranges of 5-70 pM and 0.07-20 nM. Moreover, the aptasensing array exhibits a high sensitivity to Pb 2+ with an ultra-low detection limit of 0.5 pM. The developed aptasensor has been successfully applied to determine Pb 2+ in tap water, lake water, milk, and human blood serum. Paper is one of the most commonly used food packaging materials. During the production of packaging paper, it is possible for trace amounts of heavy metals to be incorporated as contaminants. These could migrate into food when packaging paper (food contact paper) is used for cooking, storing and eating. The aim of this study was to determine the migration of lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) from food contact paper into a food simulant and then to assess human safety through the estimated daily intake (EDI) with consumption factor. Migration tests were conducted for 310 samples using 4% acetic acid as a food simulant at 25°C for 10 min and at 95°C for 30 min. Concentrations of Pb and As in a food simulant were quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. LODs for Pb and As were 0.002 and 0.005 µg L -1 , respectively. The migration of Pb from food contact paper ranged from not detected (ND) to 17.5 μg L -1 at 25°C for 10 min and from 0.10 to 25.6 μg L -1 at 95°C for 30 min while As ranged from ND to 0.44 μg L -1 at 25°C for 10 min and from ND to 0.87 μg L -1 at 95°C for 30 min. The migration of Pb and As determined in this study confirm that the human exposure was within safe levels based on the EDI of food contact paper compared with the provisional tolerable weekly intake for Pb of 25 μg kg -1 bw and for As of 15 μg kg -1 bw.

Herein, an easy and effective ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe for the selective detection of Pb2+ and pyrophosphate (PPi) was developed based on label-free carbon dots (CDs). The CDs showed dual emission bands at 477 and 651 nm under a single-wavelength excitation (391 nm). Pb2+ and PPi were sequentially detected by the sensor with high reliability and accuracy via the exploitation of the fluorescence intensity ratio (F477/F651). The dual emission sensor exhibited high selectivity and excellent sensitivity for Pb2+ and PPi than for other analytes with detection limits as low as 0.055 μM and 0.089 μM, respectively. Moreover, the fluorescent CDs changed from pink to cyan and from cyan to pink and could be used as a fluorescent paper sensor for the visual detection of Pb2+ and PPi. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the ratiometric fluorescence detection of Pb2+ and PPi by CDs; therefore, the as-synthesized CDs show great potential for application in the determination of Pb2+ and PPi in real samples.

This work reports the fabrication of integrated electrochemical fluidic paper-based analytical devices (ePADs) using a marker pen drawing and screen-printing. Electrodes were deposited on paper using screen-printing with conductive carbon ink. Then, the desired fluidic patterns were formed on the paper substrate by drawing with a commercial hydrophobic marker pen using an inexpensive computer-controlled x-y plotter. The working electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy. The analytical utility of the electrochemical PADs is demonstrated through electrochemical determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by anodic stripping voltammetry. For this purpose, the sample was mixed with a buffer solution and a Bi(III) solution, applied to the test zone of the PAD, the metals were preconcentrated as a bismuth alloy on the electrode surface and oxidized by applying an anodic potential scan. The proposed manufacturing approach enables the large-scale fabrication of fit-for-purpose disposable PADs at low cost which can be used for rapid on-site environmental monitoring.

A paper-based microfluidic device based on unconventional principle was developed and used to detect lead ions through a two-step process including heated incubation and subsequent mixing. The device was made by generating a superhydrophobic pattern, which defines channel and reservoir barriers, on a water-impermeable paper substrate, followed by loading and drying the reagents in the defined reservoirs. Different from the conventional paper-based devices that are made of water-permeable paper, the as-prepared device holds water drops in discrete reservoirs, and the water drops will not move unless the device is titled along the direction of the predefined channels. In this way, the liquid samples applied onto the device are handled as individual drops and could be stored, transported, and mixed on demand. Different from the conventional paper-based devices that use capillary force to drive liquid, our new device uses wetting and gravity as driving force. We name this operation principle suspending-droplet mode paper-based device (SD-μPAD). The use of a Teflon contact-printing stamp makes the production of such devices rapid, cost efficient, and mass productive. Utilizing a G-quadruplex-based luminescence switch-on assay, we demonstrated rapid, convenient, highly sensitive, and low cost detection of lead(II) ions in water samples, using a custom made battery-powered portable device, and a smart phone as the detector., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. A disposable electrochemical lateral flow paper-based sensing device for heavy metal detection is proposed. The quantification of lead and cadmium in aqueous samples is demonstrated in a range from 10 to 100 ppb with a limit of detection of 7 and 11 ppb respectively. Moreover, the platform itself, which is made of paper, served as a sample pretreatment material due to its filtering properties. Real samples, especially in which the matrix is usually turbid and would in principle need a previous filtration, are successfully analyzed. This lab-on-paper device is simple, low cost, easy to fabricate, and portable, being a promising tool for new point-of-care applications in environmental monitoring, public health, and food safety.

A facile and simple paper-based scanometric assay was developed to detect Pb(2+) using GR5-DNAzyme. Magnetic beads (MBs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were used as a signal collector and a signal indicator, respectively. They were linked together by GR5-DNAzyme, comprising an enzyme and a substrate strand pairing up with each other. In the presence of Pb(2+), the substrate strand is cut into two pieces, resulting in the disassembly of AuNPs from the MBs. These AuNPs were spotted on predefined areas on a chromatography paper, where signal is amplified through silver reduction. This sensing platform exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity toward Pb(2+), giving a detection limit of 0.3 nM and a linear fitting range from 0.1 to 1000 nM. Testing of this biosensor in river water and synthetic urine samples also showed satisfying results. Besides offering simultaneous and multi-sample analysis, this paper-based sensing platform presented here could be potentially applied and served as a general platform for on-site, naked eyes, and low-cost monitoring of other heavy metal ions in environmental and body fluid samples., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. A versatile point-of-care assay platform was developed for simultaneous detection of multiple targets based on a microfluidic paper-based analytic device (μPAD) using a target-responsive hydrogel to mediate fluidic flow and signal readout. An aptamer-cross-linked hydrogel was used as a target-responsive flow regulator in the μPAD. In the absence of a target, the hydrogel is formed in the flow channel, stopping the flow in the μPAD and preventing the colored indicator from traveling to the final observation spot, thus yielding a "signal off" readout. In contrast, in the presence of a target, no hydrogel is formed because of the preferential interaction of target and aptamer. This allows free fluidic flow in the μPAD, carrying the indicator to the observation spot and producing a "signal on" readout. The device is inexpensive to fabricate, easy to use, and disposable after detection. Testing results can be obtained within 6 min by the naked eye via a simple loading operation without the need for any auxiliary equipment. Multiple targets, including cocaine, adenosine, and Pb(2+), can be detected simultaneously, even in complex biological matrices such as urine. The reported method offers simple, low cost, rapid, user-friendly, point-of-care testing, which will be useful in many applications.

The scaling up of the intensity of beams of atomic clusters (nanoparticle beams) creates a new route to the fabrication of functional nanostructured materials. A challenge is to present, to the directed beam, high surface areas of the desired support material, for decoration by the clusters at local sub-monolayer densities. Then, the clusters and their properties can be preserved. Here we employ the Matrix Assembly Cluster Source (MACS) to demonstrate and characterise the deposition of lead clusters, with size of order 2 nm, into planar sheets of porous carbon paper, a material employed in electrode fabrication. We find that clusters are deposited to a depth comparable with the pore size of the carbon, ~ 50 μm, giving rise to a metal loading of ~ 0.05 mg cm−2 of carbon paper. The functionality of the nanocomposite film so created is demonstrated by its use as an electrode for the electrochemical generation of oxidising species suitable for water purification. Lead (Pb) pollution from local mines and industrial use increases risks for human, animal, and plant health. Pectin is an effective chelator of Pb, and it has been shown that a unicellular green alga, Penium margaritaceum, synthesizes pectin in the cell wall. In this study, the ability of P. margaritaceum to remove Pb from an aqueous solution was investigated. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that two strains of P. margaritaceum accumulated Pb on the cell surface. Hence, P. margaritaceum cells were immobilized on cellulose filter paper. The immobilized algal cells were soaked in 1.0 mg/L Pb solution with gentle shaking for 8 h, and Pb in the solution and on the filter paper was measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The immobilized algal cells continuously decreased the Pb concentration to less than 0.5 mg/L and recovered 31.8–32.7% of added Pb. The specific decrease in Pb and increase in Ca were observed in the presence of 1.0 mg/L each of Ca, Mg, Na, and K. Fourier transform infrared spectra suggested that the carboxylic acid group would be responsible for the adsorption of Pb. This study is the first to demonstrate the effectiveness of the immobilized P. margaritaceum cell in removing Pb from aqueous solutions with simple solid–liquid separation.

A multi-amplified paper-based electrochemical strategy using Pb(2+) dependent DNAzyme as the recognition unit for Pb(2+) detection was developed. In this work, flower-like reduced graphene (FrGO) was prepared utilizing flower-like ZnO as template, which was first one step grown on the gold nanoparticles modified paper working electrode (Au-PWE). After being treated with acid and then modified with Au, a novel sensor platform named Au/FrGO/Au-PWE with large specific surface area and good electrical conductivity was fabricated. The Mn2O3 nanoparticle-assembled hierarchical hollow spheres (H-Mn2O3) was served as nanocarrier to immobilize GOx, HRP and signal strand (S3), resulting to the formation of S3/H-Mn2O3/HRP/GOx bioconjugations. In the presence of Pb(2+), the DNAzyme (S1) was activated and the substrate strand (S2) was cleaved. After the incubation with S3/H-Mn2O3/HRP/GOx in 0.1M HAc-NaAc solution (pH 4.3) containing 30 mM aniline and 15 mM glucose, a readily measurable "turn-on" electrochemical signal could be measured. On the basis of the signal amplification strategy of Au/FrGO/Au-PWE sensing platform and S3/H-Mn2O3/HRP/GOx bioconjugations, the developed biosensor exhibited a good linear response toward over a wide range of concentration from 0.005 to 2000 nM., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Novel miniaturized Pb(II) paper-based potentiometric sensors are described using coumarin derivatives I and II as electroactive ionophores and nano vanadium pentoxide as a solid contact material for the sensitive and selective monitoring of trace lead ions. Density functional theory (DFT) confirms optimum geometries, electronic properties, and charge transfer behaviors of 1:2 Pb(II): coumarin complexes. The sensors are prepared by using two strips of 20 × 5 mm filter paper with two circular orifices. One orifice is coated with vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanoparticles in colloidal conductive carbon as a solid-contact, covered by a PVC membrane containing coumarin ionophore to act as a sensing probe. The other orifice is treated with Ag/AgCl in a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film, to act as a reference electrode. Sensors with ionophores (I) and (II) exhibit Nernstian slopes of 27.7 ± 0.2 and 30.2 ± 0.2 mV/decade over the linear concentration range 4.5 × 10−7 to 6.2 × 10−3 M and 8.5 × 10−8 to 6.2 × 10−3 M, with detection limits of 1.3 × 10−7 M (26.9 ppb) and 2.1 × 10−8 M (4.4 ppb), respectively. The sensors are satisfactorily used for accurate determination of lead ions in drinking water, lead-acid battery wastewater, and electronic waste leachates. Synthetic 11 Å tobermorite (Ca5Si6O16(OH)2.4H2O) and its Al-substituted analogue are layer-lattice ion-exchangers with potential applications in nuclear and hazardous wastewater treatment. The present study reports the facile one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of an Al-tobermorite-rich cation-exchanger from a combination of paper recycling ash, post-consumer container glass, and lime, with compositional ratios of [Ca]/[Si + Al] = 0.81 and [Al]/[Si + Al] = 0.18. The reaction products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction analysis, 29Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Hydrothermal processing in 4 M NaOH(aq) at 100 °C for 7 days yielded an Al-tobermorite-rich product that also contained katoite (Ca3Al2SiO12H8), portlandite (Ca(OH)2), calcite (CaCO3), and amorphous silicate gel. The hydrothermal product was found to have a Cs+ cation exchange capacity of 59 ± 4 meq 100 g−1 and selective Cs+ distribution coefficients (Kd) of 574 ± 13 and 658 ± 34 cm3 g−1 from solutions with molar ratios [Cs+]:[Na+] and [Cs+]:[Ca2+] of 1:100. In a batch sorption study at 20 °C, the uptakes of Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cs+ were determined to be 1.78 ± 0.04, 0.65 ± 0.06, and 0.36 ± 0.03 mmol g−1, respectively. The kinetics of Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cs+ removal were described by the pseudo-second-order rate model, which gave respective rate constants (k2) of 0.010, 0.027, and 1.635 g mmol−1 min−1, and corresponding correlation coefficients (R2) of 0.997, 0.996, and 0.999. The metal ion sorption properties of the tobermorite-rich product compared favorably with those of other waste-derived tobermorites reported in the literature. Potential strategies to improve the yield, crystallinity, and sorption characteristics of the product are discussed.

Material conversion from paper sludge ash (PSA) in NaOH solution was attempted to synthesize the adsorbent for removal of inorganic pollutants, such as Pb2+, NH4+ and PO4(3-) from aqueous solution. PSA of 0.5 g was added into 10 mL of 3 mol/L NaOH solution, and then heated at 80, 120, and 160 degrees C for 6-48 hr to obtain the product. PSA mainly composed of two crystalline phases, gehlenite (Ca2Al2SiO7) and anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8), and amorphous phase. Hydroxysodalite (Na6Al6Si6O24 8H2O) was formed at 80 degrees C, and anorthite dissolved, whereas gehlenite remained unaffected. Katoite (Ca3Al2SiO4(OH)8) was formed over 120 degrees C, and hydroxycancrinite (Na8(OH)2Al6Si6O24 2H2O) was formed at 160 degrees C, due to the dissolution of both gehlenite and anorthite. Specific surface areas of the products were almost same and were higher than that of raw ash. Cation exchange capacities (CECs) of the products were also higher than that of raw ash, and CEC obtained at lower temperature was higher. Removal abilities of products for Pb2+, NH4+, and PO4(3-) were higher than that of raw ash. With increasing reaction temperature, the removal efficiencies of Pb2+ and NH4+ decreased due to the decrease of CEC of the product, while removal efficiency for PO4(3-) was almost same. The concentrations of Si and Al in the solution and the crystalline phases in the solid during the reaction explain the formation of the product phases at each temperature.

The potential for adverse effects of lead (Pb) exposure on development in children remains a health concern in the U.S., and programmatic screening of children for elevated blood lead levels ([Pb] >10 microg/dL) is widespread. With sufficiently sensitive technology for the measurement of lead such as ICP-MS, it is possible to utilize filter paper bloodspots as a specimen suitable for lead screening. Filter paper bloodspot specimens are relatively inexpensive, easy to collect, and stable during transport. For these reasons they are preferred by many program clinics for child subjects. We describe measurement of Pb from filter paper bloodspots using ICP-MS and bloodspot standards.

The possibility of amending Pb2+ contaminated soil (S) with paper sludge (P) was investigated through adsorption and desorption experiments. The adsorption process of Pb2+ in soil containing paper sludge (SP) could be well described by pseudo second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. After P addition, the equilibrium time decreased greatly (from 28 to 8 hr) and the Pb2+ maximum adsorbed amount (Qmax) increased by a factor of more than three to 102.04 mg/g. Qmax reached its maximum as S:P was 9:1 (m/m) after 10 days contact between S and P. Moreover, Pb2+ adsorbed amount increased with the rise of pH during the adsorption process. Desorption experiments indicated that Pb2+ adsorption in SP was irreversible. The metal ion fraction was analyzed with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer and Environmental Scan Electron Microscope. As a result, the addition of P to soil was found to induce a decrease in the mobile forms. The Pb2+ complexes formation in the presence of carbonates was the main adsorption mechanism. Overall, the paper sludge could be one of the promising soil amendments for the remediation of soil with Pb2+ contamination.

Lead (Pb) contamination in the black paper that recovers intraoral films (BKP) has been investigated. BKP samples were collected from the Radiology Clinics of the Dental School of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, Brazil. For sake of comparison, four different methods were used. The results revealed the presence of high lead levels, well above the maximum limit allowed by the legislation. Pb contamination levels achieved after the following treatments: paper digestion in nitric acid, microwave treatment, DIN38414-54 method and TCLP method were 997 microg g(-1), 189 microg g(-1), 20.8 microg g(-1), and 54.0 microg g(-1), respectively. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were employed for lead determination according to the protocols of the applied methods. Lead contamination in used BKP was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDS). All the SEM imaging was carried out in the secondary electron mode (SE) and backscattered-electron mode (QBSD) following punctual X-ray fluorescence spectra. Soil contamination derived from this product revealed the urgent need of addressing this problem. These elevated Pb levels, show that a preliminary treatment of BKP is mandatory before it is disposed into the common trash. The high lead content of this material makes its direct dumping into the environment unwise.

Background: Sample collection instructions for the bloodspot lead screening program conducted by the Nebraska Medical Center recommend continuous application of a single finger-stick blood drop per printed filter paper circle (a volume of approximately 50 microl). In this study, we assessed whether apparent blood volumes and geometries of finger-stick bloodspot samples submitted for lead testing were consistent with collection recommendations., Methods: Samples were 422 extra bloodspots from 138 patients that were submitted for lead analysis. Using image analysis, apparent blood volumes were computed by comparison of bloodspot areas to bloodspot areas for standards of known volume. Circularity of samples was also assessed by image analysis., Results: Mean blood volume (25+/-13 microl) was approximately 50% of that needed to fill a printed circle. The distribution of volumes had three local maxima, consistent with bloodspot formation by multiple discrete applications of blood drops of small volumes (17+/-6 microl) rather than by continuous application of blood. Multi-drop samples were also apparent from non-circular geometries., Conclusions: Bloodspots submitted for lead analysis showed an apparently inherent drop volume of less than 20 microl per drop and the application of multiple drops. Non-ideality of such specimens indicates the need for continuing education of bloodspot collectors.

In the last few years solidification/stabilisation of acidic soils polluted by heavy metals with low-cost sorbents has been investigated. Paper mill sludges are produced in large amounts and their disposal is a serious environmental problem. The possibility was therefore studied of using paper mill sludge as a stabilizer to reduce the bioavailable metal forms in polluted soils and thus the transferability of metals to plants (barley). We first investigated the sorbing properties of paper mill sludge for Zn(II) and Pb(II) and then their fractionation both in a polluted soil and in the same soil amended with paper mill sludge in order to check the decrease in mobile forms. Finally in both soils we tested the uptake of two metals by common barley in order to assess the performance of soil remediation from an ecological point of view. The addition of paper mill sludge to a soil contaminated by lead and zinc induces a decrease in the mobile forms of both metals, probably due to the presence in sludge of organic matter and kaolinite, which are able to bind the metals very strongly. The decrease in the mobile forms, which are the most readily available for uptake by plants, corresponds to a decrease in plant uptake.

Background: Lack of a second sample often precludes the ability to perform repeat lead measurements on filter paper bloodspot samples. We investigated whether annular specimens remaining from once-punched filter paper bloodspot specimens could provide accurate Pb measurements when measurements were scaled for the remainder area relative to the original punch area., Methods: 50 microl bloodspot specimens were prepared using Pb-spiked EDTA whole blood. After removal of 6 mm punches, bitmap images of the remainder specimens were obtained using a scanner. Image analysis was used to determine the bloodspot area of the remainder sample relative to the area of the original punch. Measurement of Pb for punches and for remainder specimens was performed by ICP-MS., Results: Area-corrected Pb measurements for remainder samples were significantly higher than for the punches, by an average factor of 1.52+/-0.12 (p<0.05, n=28). The difference was due to a discontinuity (an increase) in the per-area Pb at the bloodspot perimeter. Area-corrected results for annular specimens that excluded the perimeter were identical to those of the punch., Conclusion: Area-corrected Pb measurement using annular once-punched bloodspot remainder specimens can accurately reproduce lead measurements obtained from the original punch when the bloodspot perimeter area is excluded.

A "turn-on" fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensor (RBS) for Pd(2+) has been designed and synthesized through introduction of sulfur as a ligand atom to Rhodamine B. RBS exhibits high selectivity (freedom from the interference of Hg(2+ )in particular) and sensitivity toward Pd(2+) with a detection limit as low as 2.4 nM. RBS is also a reversible sensor, and it can be made into test paper to detect Pd(2+) in pure water. Compared to the chemosensors that introduced phosphorus to Rhodamine to detect Pd(2+), RBS can be synthesized more simply and economically.

Contents of pollutant elements lead and cadmium in toilet paper were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Both lead and cadmium has good linear relationship that lead is over the range of 0.00-10.00 micrograms.mL-1 (r = 0.9989) and cadmium is over the range of 0.00-4.00 micrograms.mL-1 (r = 0.9997). In this method, RSD is bellow 3.08% and recovery is over the range of 94.8%-104.5%. The method is simple and accurate. It can be used as monitor method of lead and cadmium in toilet paper.

Low cost disposable working electrodes are specifically desired for practical applications of electrochemical detection considering maturity of electrochemical stations and data collection protocols. In this paper double-sided conductive adhesive carbon tape with nanostructure was applied to fabricate disposable working electrodes. Being supported by indium tin oxide glass, the prepared carbon tape electrodes were coated with bismuth film for stripping analysis of heavy metal ions. By integrating the bismuth modified electrodes with paper-based analytical devices, we were able to differentiate Zn, Cd and Pb ions with the sample volume of around 15 μL. After the optimization of parameters, including modification of bismuth film and the area of the electrodes, etc., Pb ions could be measured in the linear range from 10 to 500 μg/L with the detection limit of 2 μg/L. Our experimental results revealed that the disposable modified electrodes could be used to quantify migrated lead from toys with the results agreed well with that using atomic absorption spectrometry. Although bismuth modification and stripping analysis could be influenced by the low conductivity of the carbon tape, the low cost disposable carbon tape electrodes take the advantages of large-scaled produced double-sided carbon tape, including its reproducible nanostructure and scaled-up fabrication process. In addition, the preparation of disposable electrodes avoids time-consuming pretreatment and experienced operation. A revised procedure for processing a capillary blood sample collected on filter paper (FP) for analysis by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) is described. A 1/4-in. diameter disk of the dried FP sample was used, and a correlation of 0.975 with a false-positive rate of 0.8% and a false-negative rate of 1.7% was found when the results from the FP sample and its corresponding venous sample were compared. Several analytical variables were investigated, and the following was found: blood samples with hematocrit values of 30-39% did not show any significant differences between the paired FP and venous lead results; filter paper blank values were < 2 micrograms/dl with the use of aqueous standards without correction and 0.1 microgram/dl with paper blank correction; and during the collection of 163 samples from 6 different urban sites over a period of 1 year, no environmental lead contamination was encountered based upon the good agreement between all of the paired FP and venous lead results. The method described is easier to perform than an earlier version. All indications suggest that a fingerstick capillary blood sample collected on filter paper is suitable for lead screening. Proper precautions must always be taken to guard against contamination.

Objective: To develop and evaluate a new filter paper method to determine capillary blood lead levels accurately in children., Design: Paired comparison of lead levels determined in capillary whole blood dried on filter paper with lead levels in venous whole blood samples determined by a reference method., Setting: Children's Hospital of Michigan clinics, Detroit., Patients: One hundred children aged 9 months to 6 years., Interventions: Lead concentrations determined in capillary whole blood samples dried on filter paper were compared with concentrations measured in paired venous whole blood samples by a reference method., Main Outcome Measures: Comparability of the two lead assay methods was assessed with the concordance coefficient. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictivity of the capillary filter paper method relative to the reference method were determined at three intervention decision concentrations of blood lead defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention., Results: There was high agreement between the two assay methods, with a concordance coefficient of O.96. The capillary filter paper assay had a sensitivity of 90% and specificity of 90% for differentiating blood lead levels of 0.48 mumol/L (10 micrograms/dL) or more. Blood lead levels of 0.72 mumol/L (15 micrograms/dL) or more and 0.96 mumol/L (20 micrograms/dL) or more were identified with 98% and 94% sensitivity and 98% and 99% specificity, respectively. Positive predictivity was 93%, 98%, and 97%, respectively, at the three blood lead concentration decision points., Conclusion: The capillary filter paper method for blood lead analysis described herein provides a convenient, sensitive, accurate, and inexpensive method to examine children for elevated blood lead levels.

Good drainage of the pulp suspension is vitally important for stable papermaking. Although the addition of lignocellulosic nanofibers (LNFC) in pulp could highly reinforce the end paper sheets, the application of LNFC could diminished the pulp drainage. To solve this problem, the impact of the zeolite-chitosan and bentonite-chitosan microparticle drainage aid systems on the LNFC-reinforced recycled pulp was systematically investigated. Results indicated that the mentioned microparticle systems improved the drainage and retention especially in applying 1% chitosan with 0.3% zeolite. In mechanical properties, applying the microparticle systems, not only did not deteriorate these properties, but also improved most of them, especially in treatment containing zeolitechitosan. It seems that the improved pulp drainage and the mechanical properties of the end papers was due to successful mission of microparticle system and synergistic interactions of pulp fibres, LNFC, chitosan, and zeolite, which could also lead to denser and more uniform structure of handsheets. Background: Residual dried blood spots (DBSs) on filter paper from neonatal screening have been proposed as samples for population survey of lead contamination. We have investigated the EDTA effect on lead release in the eluting solution., Methods: Furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry has been used for lead measurements. Standard, blank and sample solutions contained 2% m/v NH(4)H(2)PO(4), 0.5% v/v Triton X-100 and 0.2% v/v HNO(3) as matrix modifier solution (MMS) with or without EDTA. A calibration curve was established from aqueous standard solutions. Paper discs from DBS and blank, punched near the DBS, were eluted in MM solution and, where required, EDTA at different concentrations. Specimens were leftover DBSs with different storage times, matched samples from 20 adult patients consisting of liquid whole blood (LWB) containing 5 mmol/L EDTA, DBSs eluted in MM solution with 5 mmol/L EDTA or without EDTA., Results: Optimal lead recovery from DBS required 5 mM EDTA in the eluting solution. Mean lead levels of LWB and DBSs eluted with EDTA were similar and higher than DBSs without EDTA (P<0.001). Without EDTA, the median value of lead optical density was lower for 6-month-old DBSs than for blanks (P<0.001)., Conclusions: Residual DBSs can be used for population survey, but 5 mmol/L EDTA in the extracting solution is required to fully recover lead.

A novel electrochemical carbon cloth (CC) analysis device (eCAD) is proposed for the determination of Pb 2+ in environmental water samples, which was assembled using a single-step functional CC as both the sensing and the substrate material. The modified CC was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectra, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The increase in electrochemical activity is due to the increased defective extent and excellent electrochemical activity of CC. Under optimum conditions (viz. a pH value of 4.5, deposition time of 160 s), the sensor is capable of determining Pb 2+ by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) at a typical working potential of - 1.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Response is linear from 5.0 × 10 -9 to 3.0 × 10 -6  M Pb 2+ , and the detection limit is 4.8 nM (at S/N = 3). The sensor was successfully applied to the determination of Pb 2+ in real samples, with apparent recoveries from 96.0 to 102.0% and a relative standard deviation of less than 3.4%. In addition, the integration of the sensor with signal collection components has enabled us to realize on-site analysis of Pb 2+ , which is highlighted as a new generation of electrode platform for the development of a portable analysis device.Graphical abstract.

Background: Lead testing on dried filter paper (FP) blood spots is used routinely by some laboratories for lead poisoning screening. Proficiency testing (PT) as required under CLIA '88 laboratory regulations has not been available for these methods., Methods: We describe a suitable PT scheme and evaluate FP laboratory performance based on program results. Monthly testing events consisting of five FP specimens were provided to six participating laboratories. Results were evaluated against target values determined by referee laboratories., Results: Preliminary FP laboratory results showed poor agreement with specimen target values, exhibiting a mean absolute bias of 0.29 micromol/L (5.9 microg/dL). Five of six participating laboratories demonstrated significant improvement in later testing events, with bias decreasing to 0.12 micromol/L (2.5 microg/dL). Performance varied widely between the participating laboratories and appeared to be method dependent. When evaluated using CLIA blood lead acceptability criteria, the proportion of acceptable individual specimen results (n = 35) ranged from 54% to 100%. On a testing event basis (n = 7), the proportion of acceptable events ranged from 29% to 100%., Conclusions: A suitable FP PT program now exists to capably assist and monitor FP laboratories. Based on overt PT results, properly utilized FP testing methods can accurately measure blood lead concentration.

• Adding kaolin reduces the volatility and leachability of heavy metals. • Xerogel with high porosity was successfully synthesized for heavy metal adsorption. • Silica-alumina xerogel can effectively adsorb heavy metals in pyrolysis gas. • Heavy metal species can form ionic or covalent bonds with kaolinite. It is of great significance to reduce the secondary risk of heavy metals during the pyrolysis of paper sludge. This study used kaolin and alumina-silica-based xerogels to control heavy metals released during sludge pyrolysis. Pyrolyzing a mixture of sludge and 7% kaolin at 400 °C achieved high retention rates for Cu (95.85%), Zn (95.97%), Pb (97.15%), Cd (84.23%), and Cr (84.05%) when the pyrolysis tail gas was treated with 9 g of xerogel. The addition of kaolin facilitated the transformation of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cr from the unstable fraction to the stable fraction in pyrolysis biochar, reducing their leachability. The xerogels also played a crucial role in adsorbing and stabilizing the heavy metals. The results of thermodynamic equilibrium calculations showed that Pb(g), PbS(g), PbCl 2 (g), PbCl(g), Zn(g), ZnCl 2 (g), and Cd(g) were the main gaseous products of Zn, Pb, and Cd during paper sludge pyrolysis. The Pb atoms in PbCl 2 and PbS, and the Zn atoms in ZnCl 2 bond with the oxygen atoms on the kaolin surface by covalent bonds, while the Cl atoms in PbCl and the Pb atoms of elemental lead form ionic bonds with H and O atoms on the kaolinite surface, respectively. This Communication describes a prototype quantitative paper-based assay that simultaneously measures the levels of Pb(2+) and Hg(2+) in water. The assay requires only measurements of time to yield a quantitative readout, and the results are independent of sample volume, humidity, and sample viscosity.

In this work, a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPADs) has been proposed for simultaneous electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection of lead ion (Pb(2+)) and mercury ion (Hg(2+)) based on oligonucleotide. The functionalized wax-patterned three-dimensional (3D) paper-based ECL device that can provide fast, cost-effective, simple, and sensitive detection for analysis was dependent on Pb(2+) and Hg(2+)-induced conformational change of DNA strands through the formation of G-quadruplex and T-Hg-T complex, respectively. The carbon nanocrystals (CNCs) capped silica nanoparticles (Si@CNCs) and Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)-gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) aggregates (Ru@AuNPs) were both used as ECL labels in our case. Structure characterization of Si@CNCs and Ru@AuNPs were obtained by the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Due to the different operational potentials of Si@CNCs and Ru@AuNPs, Pb(2+) and Hg(2+) coexisting in one paper working zone can be determined simultaneously with detection limits of 10 pM and 0.2 nM, respectively. Finally, this simple and cost-effective device was successfully applied for simultaneous detection of Pb(2+) and Hg(2+) in lake water and human serum samples, respectively., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Paper-ash is used for remediation of heavily contaminated soils with metals, but remediation efficiency after longer periods has not been reported. To gain insights into the mechanisms of immobilization of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and znic (Zn), a study was performed in the laboratory experiment in uncontaminated, artificially contaminated, and remediated soils, and these soils treated with sulfate, to mimic conditions in contaminated soil from zinc smelter site. Remediation was performed by mixing contaminated soil with paper-ash to immobilize Cd, Pb, and Zn in the geotechnical composite. Partitioning of Cd, Pb, and Zn was studied over one year in seven-time intervals applying the sequential extraction procedure and complementary X-ray diffraction analyses. This methodological approach enabled us to follow the redistribution of Cd, Pb, and Zn over time, thus, to studying immobilization mechanisms and assessing the remediation efficiency and stability of newly formed mineral phases. Cd, Pb, and Zn were effectively immobilized by precipitation of insoluble hydroxides after the addition of paper-ash and by the carbonization process in insoluble carbonate minerals. After remediation, Cd, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the water-soluble fraction were well below the limiting values for inertness: Cd by 100 times, Pb by 125 times, and Zn by 10 times. Sulfate treatment did not influence the remediation efficiency. Experimental data confirmed the high remediation efficiency and stability of insoluble Cd, Pb, and Zn mineral phases in geotechnical composites.

This paper estimates the impacts of cumulative lead exposure on the short-run discipline and academic achievement of elementary school students. An exogenous, heterogeneous shock of lead-in-water levels within classrooms at Flint Community Schools provides the treatment variation used to focus on the understudied, short-run effects of lead on older children. At the mean level of classroom lead exposure disciplinary actions increased by 8 actions per grade within each school, and the share of students proficient in both math and reading declined. Screening programs for pediatric lead (Pb) poisoning routinely collect blood by finger stick onto specially designed filter paper (FP) for subsequent laboratory testing. Here, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry is evaluated as a novel method for the determination of Pb in blood spotted onto FP cards. The method requires no sample pretreatment and may be particularly suitable for rapidly screening a large number of samples. Signal intensity from the ICP-MS strongly correlated (r (2) = 0.996) with Pb target values for five blood cards from a laboratory proficiency testing program. Better precision was obtained by replicate ablation line scans (<15% rsd) compared to a grid of 25 individual ablation spots (>30% rsd). Because <2% of the sample is consumed in the laser ablation analysis, selected samples can also be analyzed by traditional techniques or archived. Lead isotope ratios determined during the same total-Pb analysis appear to be effective for discerning contamination extraneous to the blood sample. Determining that an elevated result was due to contamination may negate the need for retesting with invasive pediatric venipuncture. Some elements monitored along with Pb exhibited signal profiles conducive to potential quantitation (Ca, V, Fe, Cu Zn), whereas others did not (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cd, Hg, Tl, U). Copper, Ca, and V were inversely correlated with Pb (r = -0.89, -0.90, and -0.92, respectively). Scanning electron microscope images revealed surface modality differences between FP spotted with fresh whole blood and reconstituted freeze-dried blood reference material.

The wasps of the genus Polistes (paper wasps), have a worldwide distribution and are widespread in human-built areas. Like other social wasps, they are at the top of food chains and are therefore exposed to the dangers of biomagnification, given that the larvae are fed predominantly with prey that consist of herbivorous insects. The larval faeces, larval fecal masses, in the form of a semi-solid ball, are made up of the residues of the diet of the larva, which are emitted and compressed on the floor of the cell during the larval metamorphosis. Larval fecal masses may accumulate lead (up to 36 times with respect to the adult body), therefore they were used as substrate for the analysis. From the analysis of sample nests of Polistes dominulus in various sites of the urban area of Florence, it emerges that the larval fecal masses are an analytical substrate with which it is possible to distinguish zones with differing degrees of lead pollution. The lead concentration measured in the larval fecal masses turns out to be directly correlated with vehicle traffic density, the main lead source in Florence when the survey was carried out. The notable increase in the lead concentration of larval fecal masses from the rural to the urban nest (11.15 times), in contrast with the much more limited level of pupae (4.39 times), seems to indicate the efficiency of the excretion and/or barrier mechanisms. These wasps seem to be a promising species for biomonitoring lead pollution in order to better understand its dynamics in anthropic ecosystems after the progressive diffusion of unleaded gasoline.
