Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) is a network evolved from mobile networks. Differing from the traditional network, which has a stable end‐to‐end transmission path, DTNs are sparse and intermittently connected mobile ad hoc network, which are widely used in harsh environments, such as battlefields, seabed, space communication networks, and so on. In DTNs, intermittent connectivity, partitioned network, long delays and node mobility characteristics make the network fail to communicate frequently, therefore, how to successfully forward the message is of extreme importance. Up to now, almost all the traditional models in DTNs use the store‐carry‐forward method. This paper proposes a novel clustered DTN routing model based on sensing node relationship strength. The routing mechanism takes advantage of the number of other nodes encountered by the nodes in the process of movement and the changes in the number of nodes to calculate the strength of the relationship between nodes, and clusters DTN routing according to the strength of the relationship between nodes. Moreover, the relationship between nodes in a cluster and other clusters is used to transmit messages between clusters, and messages are transmitted within clusters according to the strength of the relationship between nodes. Simulation results show that the routing mechanism not only increases the success rate of message transmission, but also reduces the transmission delay of messages and improves network performance. The intersection of cybersecurity and opportunistic networks has ushered in a new era of innovation in the realm of wireless communications. In an increasingly interconnected world, where seamless data exchange is pivotal for both individual users and organizations, the need for efficient, reliable, and sustainable networking solutions has never been more pressing. Opportunistic networks, characterized by intermittent connectivity and dynamic network conditions, present unique challenges that necessitate innovative approaches for optimal performance and sustainability. This paper introduces a groundbreaking paradigm that integrates the principles of cybersecurity with opportunistic networks. Path hopping serves as an active defense mechanism in network security, yet it encounters challenges like a restricted path switching space, the recurrent use of similar paths and vital nodes, a singular triggering mechanism for path switching, and fixed hopping intervals. This paper introduces an active defense method employing multiple constraints and strategies for path hopping. A depth-first search (DFS) traversal is utilized to compute all possible paths between nodes, thereby broadening the path switching space while simplifying path generation complexity. Subsequently, constraints are imposed on residual bandwidth, selection periods, path similitude, and critical nodes to reduce the likelihood of reusing similar paths and crucial nodes. Moreover, two path switching strategies are formulated based on the weights of residual bandwidth and critical nodes, along with the calculation of path switching periods. This facilitates adaptive switching of path hopping paths and intervals, contingent on the network's residual bandwidth threshold, in response to diverse attack scenarios. Simulation outcomes illustrate that this method, while maintaining normal communication performance, expands the path switching space effectively, safeguards against eavesdropping and link-flooding attacks, enhances path switching diversity and unpredictability, and fortifies the network's resilience against malicious attacks. The Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO) was launched on 5 August 2022, equipped on the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle. At present, the KPLO is effectively carrying out its scientific mission in lunar orbit. The KPLO serves as a cornerstone for the development and validation of Korean space science and deep space technology. Among its payloads is the DTNPL, enabling the first-ever test of delay-tolerant network (DTN) technology for satellites in lunar orbit. DTN technology represents a significant advancement in space communication, offering stable communication capabilities characterized by high delay tolerance, reliability, and asymmetric communication speeds—a necessity for existing satellite and space communication systems to evolve. In this paper, we briefly give an overview of the Korea Lunar Exploration Program (KLEP) and present scientific data gathered through the KPLO mission. Specifically, we focus on the operational tests for DTN-ION conducted for message and file transfer, as well as real-time video streaming, during the initial operations of the KPLO. In socially aware networking, nodes typically behave selfishly due to resource constraints and social correlations, resulting in low network performance. To incentivize selfish nodes to actively participate in message forwarding, this paper proposes a resource-based dynamic pricing and forced forwarding incentive algorithm (DFIA). Firstly, the algorithm introduces virtual currency as a transaction medium and then designs a pricing function based on factors such as the node's resource status, participation contribution, location relevance, and social connectivity. It ensures that the forwarding service is transacted at a reasonable price through bargaining rules. Secondly, a forced forwarding strategy is implemented to compel selfish nodes, which are unwilling to participate in other nodes' message forwarding, to forward a certain number of non-local messages. Meanwhile, in order to prevent nodes from discarding messages and to ensure successful forwarding to the destination, specific rules are used to allocate contribution values to nodes that successfully participate in message forwarding. Lastly, to avoid false quotation behavior, blockchain technology is employed. Transaction information is packaged into blocks and added to the blockchain after consensus validation by other nodes in the network, ensuring the transparency and immutability of transaction data. Simulation results indicate that compared with the existing incentive algorithms, this algorithm not only enhances message delivery probability but also effectively reduces average latency. Ensuring source location privacy is crucial for the security of underwater acoustic sensor networks amid the growing use of marine environmental monitoring. However, the traditional source location privacy scheme overlooks multi-attacker cooperation strategies and also has the problem of high communication overhead. This paper addresses the aforementioned limitations by proposing an underwater source location privacy protection scheme based on game theory under the scenario of multiple cooperating attackers (SLP-MACGT). First, a transformation method of a virtual coordinate system is proposed to conceal the real position of nodes to a certain extent. Second, through using the relay node selection strategy, the diversity of transmission paths is increased, passive attacks by adversaries are resisted, and the privacy of source nodes is protected. Additionally, a secure data transmission technique utilizing fountain codes is employed to resist active attacks by adversaries, ensuring data integrity and enhancing data transmission stability. Finally, Nash equilibrium could be achieved after the multi-round evolutionary game theory of source node and multiple attackers adopting their respective strategies. Simulation experiments and performance evaluation verify the effectiveness and reliability of SLP-MACGT regarding aspects of the packet forwarding success rate, security time, delay and energy consumption: the packet delivery rate average increases by 30%, security time is extended by at least 85%, and the delay is reduced by at least 90% compared with SSLP, PP-LSPP, and MRGSLP. The rapid development of mobile communication devices has brought challenges to wireless networks, where data packets are able to organize and maintain local area networks more freely without the constraints of wired devices. Scholars have developed diverse network protocols on how to ensure data transmission while maintaining its self-organizational nature. However, it is difficult for traditional network protocols to meet the needs of increasingly complex networks. In order to solve the problem that the better node set may not be selected when selecting the node set responsible for forwarding in the traditional OLSR protocol, a multi-objective optimized OLSR algorithm is proposed in this paper, which incorporating a new MPR mechanism and an improved NSGA-II algorithm. In the process of route discovery, the intermediate nodes responsible for forwarding packets are determined by the new MPR mechanism, and then the main parameters in the OLSR protocol are provided by the multi-objective optimization algorithm. Matlab was used to build a self-organizing network in this study. In addition, the conventional OLSR protocol, NSGA-II algorithm and multi-objective simulated annealing algorithm are selected to compare with the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce packet loss and end-to-end delay while obtaining better results in HV and Spacing, two multi-objective optimization result evaluation metrics. Although several years have passed since its first introduction, the significance of Delay-Tolerant Networking (DTN) remains evident, particularly in challenging environments where traditional networks face operational limitations such as disrupted communication or high latency. This survey paper aims to explore the diverse array of applications where DTN technologies have proven successful, with a focus on emerging and novel application paradigms. In particular, we focus on the contributions of DTN in the Future Internet, including its contribution to space applications, smart cities and the Internet of Things, but also to underwater communications. Opportunistic mobile social networks (OMSNs) have become increasingly popular in recent years due to the rise of social media and smartphones. However, message forwarding and sharing social information through intermediary nodes on OMSNs raises privacy concerns as personal data and activities become more exposed. Therefore, maintaining privacy without limiting efficient social interaction is a challenging task. This paper addresses this specific problem of safeguarding user privacy during message forwarding by integrating a privacy layer on the state-of-the-art OMSN routing decision models that empowers users to control their message dissemination. Mainly, we present three user-centric privacy-aware forwarding modes guiding the selection of the next hop in the forwarding path based on social metrics such as common friends and exchanged messages between OMSN nodes. More specifically, we define different social relationship strengths approximating real-world scenarios (familiar, weak tie, stranger) and trust thresholds to give users choices on trust levels for different social contexts and guide the routing decisions. We evaluate the privacy enhancement and network performance through extensive simulations using ONE simulator for several routing schemes (Epidemic, Prophet, and Spray and Wait) and different movement models (random way, bus, and working day). We demonstrate that our modes can enhance privacy by up to 45% in various network scenarios, as measured by the reduction in the likelihood of unintended message propagation, while keeping the message-delivery process effective and efficient. This paper proposes a Software-Defined Delay Tolerant Networking (SDDTN) architecture as a solution to managing large Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) networks in a scalable manner. This work is motivated by the planned deployments of large DTN networks on the Moon and beyond in deep space. Current space communication involves relatively few nodes and is heavily deterministic and scheduled, which will not be true in the future. It is unclear how these large space DTN networks, consisting of inherently intermittent links, will be able to adapt to dynamically changing network conditions. In addition to the proposed SDDTN architecture, this paper explores data plane programming and the Programming Protocol-Independent Packet Processors (P4) language as a possible method of implementing this SDDTN architecture, enumerates the challenges of this approach, and presents intermediate results. In predictable delay tolerant networks (PDTNs), the network topology is known a priori or can be predicted over time, such as space planet networks and vehicular networks based on public buses or trains. Due to the intermittent connectivity, network partitioning, and long delays in PDTNs, most of the researchers mainly focuses on routing and data access research. However, topology control can improve energy effectiveness and increase the communication capacity, thus how to maintain the dynamic topology of PDTNs becomes crucial. In this paper, a contact ability based topology control method for PDTNs is proposed. First, the contact ability is calculated using our contact ability calculation model, and then the PDTNs is modeled as an undirected weighted contact graph which includes spatial and contact ability information. The topology control problem is defined as constructing a minimum spanning tree (MST) that the contact ability of the MST is maximized. We propose two algorithms based on undirected weighted contact graph to solve the defined problem, and compare them with the latest method in terms of energy cost and contact ability. As multi/many-core processors are widely deployed in high-performance computing systems, efficient intra-node communication becomes more important. Intra-node communication involves data copy operations to move messages from source to destination buffer. Researchers have tried to reduce the overhead of this copy operation, but the copy operation performed by CPU still wastes the CPU resources and even hinders overlapping between computation and communication. The copy engine is a hardware component that can move data between intra-node buffers without intervention of CPU. Thus, we can offload the copy operation performed by CPU onto the copy engine. In this paper, we aim at exploiting copy engines for MPI blocking collective communication, such as broadcast and gather operations. MPI is a messaging-based parallel programming model and provides point-to-point, collective, and one-sided communications. Research has been conducted to utilize the copy engine for MPI, but the support for collective communication has not yet been studied. We propose the asynchronism in blocking collective communication and the CE-CPU hybrid approach to utilize both copy engine and CPU for intra-node collective communication. The measurement results show that the proposed approach can reduce the overall execution time of a microbenchmark and a synthetic application that perform collective communication and computation up to 72% and 57%, respectively. Delay-tolerant networks face challenges in efficiently utilizing network resources and real-time sensing of node and message statuses due to the dynamic changes in their topology. In this paper, we propose a Multi-Decision Dynamic Intelligent (MDDI) routing protocol based on double Q-learning, node relationships, and message attributes to achieve efficient message transmission. In the proposed protocol, the entire network is considered a reinforcement learning environment, with all mobile nodes treated as intelligent agents. Each node maintains two Q-tables, which store the Q-values corresponding to when a node forwards a message to a neighboring node. These Q-values are also related to the network's average latency and average hop count. Additionally, we introduce node relationships to further optimize route selection. Nodes are categorized into three types of relationships: friends, colleagues, and strangers, based on historical interaction information, and message forwarding counts and remaining time are incorporated into the decision-making process. This protocol comprehensively takes into account the attributes of various resources in the network, enabling the dynamic adjustment of message-forwarding decisions as the network evolves. Simulation results show that the proposed multi-decision dynamic intelligent routing protocol achieves the highest message delivery rate as well as the lowest latency and overhead in all states of the network compared with other related routing protocols for DTNs. This paper considers a network where a node wishes to transmit a source message to a legitimate receiver in the presence of an eavesdropper. The transmitter secures its transmissions employing a sparse implementation of random linear network coding (RLNC). A tight approximation to the probability of the eavesdropper recovering the source message is provided. The proposed approximation applies to both the cases where transmissions occur without feedback, or where the reliability of the feedback channel is impaired by an eavesdropper jamming the feedback channel. An optimization framework for minimizing the intercept probability by optimizing the sparsity of the RLNC is also presented. Disasters could cause communication systems to partially or completely down. In such a case, relief operations need a rapidly deployed communication system to save lives. Exchanging information among the rescue team is a vital factor to make important decisions. Communication system required to be robust to failures, rapidly deployable, easily maintainable to provide better services. Wireless ad-hoc networks could be the choice of establishing communication with the aid of existing infrastructure in a post-disaster case. To optimize mobile ad-hoc network performance, address the challenges that could lead to unreliable performance is required. One and the most crucial key challenge is routing information from a sender to a receiver. In this paper, network energy assesses the capacity of a node to convey messages to others. In most cases, network energy is created when two nodes interact with one another. If a node is part of the same network as the node it is connecting with, then it will be able to make an inter-network energy connection with the node it is meeting. In the case that this does not take place, there will be an accumulation of energy within the part of the network that is facing the node. A node with higher inter-network energy is considered suitable for forwarding. The energy optimisation is achieved using efficient identification of source and destination pairs. This work has considered two scenarios, i.e. lossless transmission and lossy transmission, for our experiments and evaluated the detection probability. The performance of the proposed PPM is evaluated in terms of delivery ratio, overhead and hops count performance measures. When the buffer size is set to 100 MB, PPM delivers 59% of messages with message overhead of 750 and it has a hop count of 2, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art methods. With lengthy lifetimes of IOT networks, PPM is capable of giving higher performance while maintaining the privacy of network. Opportunistic networks are self-organizing dynamic networks that use the communication opportunities presented by node movement to enable data delivery. Due to the indirect nature of inter-node connections and dynamic topology, opportunistic networks are vulnerable to malicious attacks, which poses a great challenge to their security. In this paper, we first propose a trust-based model for the secure routing of opportunistic networks (TBMOR), which incorporates forwarding positive degree (FP) and node activity degree (NA) into the calculation of trust value, evaluates nodes in the network by a dynamic combination of direct trust and indirect trust, and then optimizes the next node list using trust values and pruning strategies. Secondly, this paper extends the network life cycle by dynamically setting up energy thresholds to reduce network redundancy by dynamically partitioning the number of replicas using trust values.Simulation results show that compared to other routers, TBMOR can effectively resist malicious attacks, has a higher message delivery rate and lower transmission latency than other routers. Delay tolerant networks (DTNs), are characterized by their difficulty in establishing end-to-end paths and and large message propagation delays. To control network overhead costs, reduce message delays, and improve delivery rates in DTNs, it is essential to not only delete messages that have reached their destination but also to more precisely determine appropriate relay nodes. Based on the above goals, this paper constructs a multi-copy relay node selection router algorithm based on Q-lambda reinforcement learning with reference to the idea of community division (QLCR). In community division, if a node has the highestdegree, it is considered the core node, and nodes with similar interests and structural properties are divided into a community. Node degree refers to the number of nodes associated with the node, indicating its importance in the network. Structural similarity determines the distance between nodes. The selection of relay nodes considers node degree, interests, and structural similarity. The Q-lambda reinforcement learning algorithm enables each node to learn from the entire network, setting corresponding reward values based on encountered nodes meeting the specified conditions. Through iterative processes, the node with the most cumulative reward value is chosen as the final relay node. Delay-tolerant networks (DTNs) are a promising network architecture which can provide reliable multi-hop message transmission between participating mobile nodes in an unfavorable environment that is prone to link disruption and disconnection by replicating and relaying messages without any need of physical infrastructure. Additionally, DTNs can also operate as cooperative DTNs to extend the coverage of other type of networks by carrying the messages that originate from farther away base station in a multi-hop fashion to the base station. In this paper, we focus on these cooperative DTNs and propose a novel routing scheme, ring distribution routing (RDR), that controls the replication and forwarding based on the source node surroundings. This paper also analyzes the reliability and buffer efficiency in RDR. High-speed and low-latency communications are one of the major requirements for connected vehicle environments. Safety messages in vehicular networks must arrive on time for each vehicle, and the optimization of driving paths also strongly depends on low-latency traffic information. To comply with the demands, a base station take important roles to provide a short service delay for the vehicles, even at the expense of performance. The relationship between delay time and decoding performance at receiver sides in physical layers can be explained by the performance/complexity tradeoff as follows. To achieve better performance in terms of the minimization of word error rates in decoding, the receiver usually requires higher complexity, which results in larger delays. We analyze this tradeoff based on the receiver queue model. This paper proposes a novel algorithm to adaptively select one of receiver candidates under the constraint of queue stability so as not to degrade low-latency communications. In the last decade, user demand has been increasing exponentially based on modern communication systems. One of these new technologies is known as mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET). One part of MANET is called a vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET). It has different types such as vehicle-tovehicle (V2V), vehicular delay-tolerant networks, and vehicle-toinfrastructure (V2I). To provide sufficient quality of communication service in the Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Network (VDTN), it is important to present a comprehensive survey that shows the challenges and limitations of VANET. In this paper, we focus on one type of VANET, which is known as VDTNs. To investigate realistic communication systems based on VANET, we considered intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) and the possibility of replacing the roadside unit with VDTN. Many factors can affect the message propagation delay. When road-side units (RSUs) are present, which leads to an increase in the message delivery efficiency since RSUs can collaborate with vehicles on the road to increase the throughput of the network, we propose new methods based on environment and vehicle traffic and present a comprehensive evaluation of the newly suggested VDTN routing method. As an important area for mobile wireless networks, Intermittently Connected Networks (ICNs) have received increasing attention in practice and research in recent years. The main goals of the ICN routing protocol are to maximize the delivery probability and to minimize the delivery delay. These challenges have been investigated in previously proposed protocols with an assumption of fully cooperating nodes. Node cooperation directly impacts ICN performance in terms of delivery probability and delay. However, node cooperation is not guaranteed because a cooperating node consumes its buffer size and energy, thereby highlighting the challenges of memory, computation, and energy efficiencies. This paper addresses the challenge of ensuring node cooperation by proposing a novel routing protocol called Mail Man Ferry (MMF). The new protocol includes a node credit mechanism that ensures the cooperation of the network nodes. Extensive simulations were executed to evaluate the proposed protocol. Varying values of node cooperation in ICNs were employed in the simulation tests. The evaluation shows exciting results in which Mail Man Ferry outperforms previously proposed ICN protocols. The vehicle-mounted self-organizing network is a part of the MANET network. It is placed between the roadside vehicle and the fixed communication equipment. It can serve as a hub for road vehicles and can enable multihorsepower wireless mechanisms to exchange data between vehicles. This article is aimed at studying the DTN routing protocol based on machine learning in the vehicle self-organizing network. When data is forwarded, the node will determine the forwarding route selection according to its own coordinate information, the coordinate information of neighboring nodes, and the coordinate information of the destination node. Usually, the purpose is for the geographic coordinates of the node to be stored in the data packet. And data packets are periodically transmitted between nodes on each network. So that when you publish your own coordinate nodes, you can update the location information of nearby nodes at any time. This paper proposes that routing technology has become one of the most important challenges in vehicle self-organization, and there are many reasons for this. These reasons include frequent changes in the network topology and fast-moving mobile nodes. The experimental results in this paper show that more than 67% of the network data is obtained through the Gawk data extraction tool to quantify GPSR performance indicators and obtain the average driving speed of the current vehicle node. In delay-tolerant networks (DTNs), stable end-to-end connections do not always exist. Messages are forwarded, assisted by the mobility of nodes, in a store–carry–forward paradigm. The mobility of nodes in most DTNs has a certain statistical regularity; thus, using historical information in DTNs to compute the delivery quality of nodes can help to select good forwarding nodes. This paper aims to establish a routing scheme based on multihop delivery quality, which is designed to reduce the energy consumption of message forwarding while maintaining a high delivery rate. We characterized the multihop delivery quality of each node with an expected delay and an expected probability, parameterized by the remaining hop count. Based on these two quality metrics, we developed two algorithms, namely, the delay-inferred forwarding (DIF) algorithm and the probability-inferred forwarding (PIF) algorithm. The basic idea of DIF and PIF is to find the optimal forwarding path by minimizing the expected delay and by maximizing the expected probability, respectively, in the hop graph that is defined in this paper. We performed extensive trace-driven simulations to compare our algorithm to other representative routing algorithms using several real traces. We observed the following: 1) Compared with the delegation algorithm, which uses one-hop delivery quality, both DIF and PIF significantly improve the message delivery rate, and they yield more improvements as the mobility of nodes becomes more regular; and 2) compared with the state-of-the-art optimal opportunistic forwarding (OOF) algorithm, which also uses a multihop delivery quality, DIF and PIF have significantly smaller forwarding overhead (with the maximum reduction in the number of forwarding being over 40%), whereas they are quite close to OOF in terms of both delivery rate and average delay. Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are increasingly playing a fundamental role in improving driving safety. However, VANETs in a sparse environment may add risk to driving safety. The probability of a low density of vehicles in a rural area at midnight is very high. Consequently, the packet will be lost due to the lack of other vehicles, and the arrival of the following vehicles in the accident area is unavoidable. To overcome this problem, VANET is integrated with Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The most challenging features of VANETs are their high mobility. This high mobility causes sensor nodes to consume most of their energy during communication with other nodes, leading to frequent network disconnectivity. With the evolution of VANET and WSN, the Store/Carry-Forward (SCF) paradigm has emerged as an exciting research area in the Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) to solve network disconnectivity. This paper proposes the Energy-Mobility-Connectivity aware routing protocol (EMCR) for a hybrid network of VANET-WSN. Because the operation of space networks is carefully planned, it is possible to predict future contact opportunities from link budget analysis using the anticipated positions of the nodes over time. In the standard approach to space delay-tolerant networking (DTN), such knowledge is used by contact graph routing (CGR) to decide the paths for data bundles. However, the computation assumes nearly ideal channel conditions, disregarding the impact of the convergence layer retransmissions (e.g., as implemented by the Licklider transmission protocol (LTP)). In this paper, the effect of the bundle forwarding time estimation (i.e., the link service time) to routing optimality is analyzed, and an accurate expression for lossy channels is discussed. The analysis is performed first from a general and protocol-agnostic perspective, assuming knowledge of the statistical properties and general features of the contact opportunities. Then, a practical case is studied using the standard space DTN protocol, evaluating the performance improvement of CGR under the proposed forwarding time estimation. Delay-tolerant networks (DTNs) are networks where there is no immediate connection between the source and the destination. Instead, nodes in these networks use a store–carry–forward method to route traffic. However, approaches that rely on flooding the network with unlimited copies of messages may not be effective if network resources are limited. On the other hand, quota-based approaches are more resource-efficient but can have low delivery rates and high delivery delays. This paper introduces the Enhanced Message Replication Technique (EMRT), which dynamically adjusts the number of message replicas based on a node's ability to quickly disseminate the message. This decision is based on factors such as current connections, encounter history, buffer size history, time-to-live values, and energy. The EMRT is applied to three different quota-based protocols: Spray and Wait, Encounter-Based Routing (EBR), and the Destination-Based Routing Protocol (DBRP). The simulation results show that applying the EMRT to these protocols improves the delivery ratio, overhead ratio, and latency average. For example, when combined with Spray and Wait, EBR, and DBRP, the delivery probability is improved by 13%, 8%, and 10%, respectively, while the latency average is reduced by 51%, 14%, and 13%, respectively. In Opportunistic Networks, portable devices such as smartphones, tablets, and wearables carried by individuals, can communicate and save-carry-forward their messages. The message transmission is often in the short range supported by communication protocols, such as Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy, and Zigbee. These devices carried by individuals along with a city's taxis and buses represent network nodes. The mobility, buffer size, message interval, number of nodes, and number of messages copied in such a network influence the network's performance. Extending these factors can improve the delivery of the messages and, consequently, network performance; however, due to the limited network resources, it increases the cost and appends the network overhead. The network delivers the maximized performance when supported by the optimal factors. In this paper, we measured, predicted, and analyzed the impact of these factors on network performance using the Opportunistic Network Environment simulator and machine learning techniques. We calculated the optimal factors depending on the network features. We have used three datasets, each with features and characteristics reflecting different network structures. We collected the real-time GPS coordinates of 500 taxis in San Francisco, 320 taxis in Rome, and 196 public transportation buses in Münster, Germany, within 48 h. We also compared the network performance without selfish nodes and with 5 % , 10 % , 20 % , and 50 % selfish nodes. We suggested the optimized configuration under real-world conditions when resources are limited. In addition, we compared the performance of Epidemic, Prophet, and PPHB++ routing algorithms fed with the optimized factors. Information-centric networking (ICN) is a new network architecture that routes content based on names to improve transmission performance. Therefore, the efficiency of name resolution and routing becomes a critical issue in ICN. The bloom filter-based routing scheme has gained significant attention for its ability to improve the memory efficiency of routing nodes in the network, but it cannot handle the movement or deletion of content and has a high false positive rate, which increases bandwidth consumption. In this paper, we propose a cuckoo filter-based name resolution and routing method where resolution requests are forwarded through a hierarchical network structure to the node closest to the content copy as much as possible to minimize latency. This method achieves reliable content removal and allows summaries of content to be exchanged between nodes for resolution error correction and information synchronization based on a modified cuckoo filter. The simulation results show that our method can effectively reduce the number of false positives, and it can reduce the additional overhead caused by processing false positives for a large-scale network by 50% compared with the bloom filter-based scheme. Geocast, which consists of delivering messages to a specific location, has become an important technique with the accelerated development of the location-based services in mobile networks. Geocast in the automotive domain is of particular interest, enabling many promising applications, such as geographic advertising, location-based traffic alerts, etc. Different from the conventional geocast algorithms focusing on the distance-based approaches, in this paper, we propose a node mobility-aware and node contact-aware geocast algorithm (GeoMobCon) for urban vehicular ad hoc networks from the delay-tolerant network perspective to better deal with the high mobility and transient connectivity issues. Different levels and aspects of vehicle mobility information and self-maintained contact information are employed, making GeoMobCon simple, scalable, and communication and computation effective. Delay-tolerant networks (DTNs) consist of nodes moving around and occasionally coming into each other's proximity. During the limited proximity time, nodes can exchange data; this can result in a very slow data dissemination process that is usually governed by a replication-based mechanism. However, due to the long propagation delay and the large overhead associated with the replication approach, DTN delivery performance is neither efficient nor effective. To reduce the overhead, which becomes a critical aspect particularly when addressing a multicast scenario, infection recovery mechanisms have been proposed to control and reduce the number of packet copies circulating through the network. This, however, has the cost of decreasing the chances of delivering packets to all destinations. In this paper, adaptivity in infection recovery is addressed. This represents a viable solution to make transmission more reliable, hence delaying the activation of the infection recovery procedure, depending on the number of nodes, destinations, and the time. Moreover, we also propose to exploit an additional feature in data multicasting, i.e., socially aided data dissemination, where the packet dissemination procedure is not trivially epidemic, but rather exploits the intrinsic sociality of users and their interests to reduce the delivery overhead and speed up the multicast process. More specifically, we consider a procedure where users are not regarded as individual members of the network but can be aggregated into groups sharing interests, and their sociality helps the data dissemination procedure. In this paper, we propose a heterogeneous framework to deliver smart grid (SG) data cost effectively. The data generated by distributed SG loads, and generation units should be delivered to the utility control center (UCC) within the tolerated delay, which is crucial for SG applications. To this end, a heterogeneous communication framework is proposed, where the cellular network (CN) provides ubiquitous yet expensive data transmission, and vehicle-assisted device-to-device (D2D) communications are leveraged to offload the CN by delivering the delay-tolerant SG data in a store–carry–forward fashion with low cost. To improve the offloading and cost performance of the proposed framework, we put effort in the following aspects: 1) optimal forwarding schemes to optimally select vehicles to carry and forward the data; and 2) mode selection and dynamic resource allocation to maximize the amount of data delivered by D2D communications, reduce the cost of SG data delivery, and guarantee the fairness among SG users. With device-to-device (D2D) communication, user equipment can share data with each other without the involvement of network infrastructures. In order to maintain the Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) for user applications in D2D communications, most existing schemes use proactive content caching that needs to predict content popularity before making caching decisions which may result in privacy leakage, since the information of users is collected to train a deep learning-based model to predict content popularity. Therefore, it is crucial to guarantee secure data collection in machine learning-based framework. In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving D2D caching scheme with a passive content caching strategy based on node importance, which can deliver more efficient caching and prevent the potential leakage of user privacy. The scheme is based on softwaredefined networking (SDN), in which the controller is responsible for calculating node importance of devices according to the information of requests and encounters collected by SDN switches. Base station will decide which device can establish reliable and secure communication with content requester based on historical information. The next generation of cellular networks (5G) will provide dense millimeter-wave backhaul architectures to wirelessly forward heterogeneous data traffic in a multihop fashion. In this paper, we present a general optimization framework for the design of delay-aware (DA) policies in multihop wireless networks, providing proportional prioritization of traffic. We develop three throughput-optimal DA algorithms (BP-DA, BPE-DA, and HD-DA) for joint dynamic routing and dynamic link-scheduling problems with good to optimal average network delay performance. Our DA framework considers both the classical back-pressure (BP) and the recent heat-diffusion (HD) algorithms, since queue back-pressure algorithms are being considered for mmWave backhauling management. We provide analytical results for the throughput-optimality of the proposed policies and average delay minimization of HD-DA within the class of DA policies. These are policies that make decisions at each timeslot based only on current channel state, current network queue sizes, and flow priorities. We discuss the applications of our proposals to backhaul management of mmWave cellular networks in light of recent works in the literature. Finally, we present extensive simulations of our proposed algorithms, which confirm the theoretical results and show how the algorithms effectively differentiate data traffic in terms of delay while satisfying flow rate requirements. Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) are featured by unpredictable mobility patterns and easily interrupted connections. Forwarding strategy has always been the research focus in DTNs, in order to improve a delivery ratio. An enormous amount of research works pay attention to solving the following two problems: whether to forward and how to forward. Therefore, forwarding metrics and forwarding strategies both play important roles in DTNs. In this paper, we consider a generalized random-waypoint model with heterogeneous nodes; the node's speed is regarded as the forwarding metric, which includes both short-term and long-term speed. Subsequently, we propose a theoretical, multicopy delegation forwarding based on short-term and long-term speed in DTNs (DFSL-T), which first determines a comprehensive mapping from short-term speed and long-term speed to the actual forwarding metric. Then, according to the forwarding metric and delegation forwarding strategy, DFSL-T utilizes some efficient nodes with higher forwarding metrics to assist in delivering messages, in order to improve the delivery ratio while reducing the forwarding cost. However, DFSL-T assumes that each node could achieve the average speeds of the others, which is impractical. In order to overcome this problem, we further propose a practical strategy (DFSL-P) through exchanging and evaluating the average speeds of each other. Finally, we conduct simulations based on the synthetic mobility pattern and real trace. The results show that compared with other multicopy forwarding strategies, DFSL-T and DFSL-P achieve higher forwarding efficiency, which is the result of delivery ratio divided by forwarding cost. Efficient mobility management solutions are essential to provide users with seamless connectivity and session continuity during movement. However, user mobility was not envisaged as one of the early Internet's use cases due to the early adoption of destination based routing and the assumption that end-nodes are static. This has become a critical hinder for providing efficient mobility support. This paper presents the challenges, drivers, and solutions that aim to overcome the drawbacks of current mobility management approaches. Furthermore, it introduces a promising solution that builds on emerging path-based forwarding architectures that identify network links rather than end nodes. Delivery path information is stored inside the packet while forwarding is achieved by performing a simple set membership test rather than the current destination-based routing approach. Mobility management in these architectures simply requires partial recomputation of the delivery path allowing for efficient mobility support over an optimal path. In this paper, we study the potential of using the metric of Age of Information (AoI) for enhancing delay-tolerant routing protocols. The latter have been proposed for alleviating the impact of long roundtrip time in networks operating in harsh environments, e.g., in distributed applications deployed in a desert/sparsely populated area without infrastructure, a space network, etc. Delay-tolerant routing protocols can prevent excessive packet timer expiration, but do not provide any packet delivery time guarantee. Thus, they are unsuitable for time-sensitive applications that are more intensely desired nowadays in the next generation networking applications. By incorporating AoI into the operation of delay-tolerant routing protocols, we aim at devising routing protocols that can cope with both long propagation times and challenges related to time-sensitivity in packet delivery. More specifically, in this work, we modify the operation of a well-known delay-tolerant routing protocol, namely FRESH, to make AoI-based packet forwarding decisions, aiming at achieving specific delay guarantees regarding the end-to-end delivery time. We investigate the advantages and disadvantages of such an approach compared to the traditional FRESH protocol. Opportunistic ad hoc networks are characterized by intermittent and infrastructure-less connectivity among mobile nodes. Because of the lack of up-to-date network topology information and frequent link failures, geographic routing utilizes location information and adopts the store–carry–forward data delivery model to relay messages in a delay-tolerant manner. This paper proposes a message-forwarding policy based on movement patterns (MPMF). First, one- and two-hop location information in a geographic neighborhood is exploited to select relay nodes moving closer to a destination node. Message-forwarding decisions are made by referring to selected relay nodes' weight values obtained by calculating the contact frequency of each node with the destination node. Second, when relays in the vicinity of a message-carrying node are not qualified due to the sparse node density and nodal motion status, the destination's movement and the location information of a one-hop relay are jointly utilized to improve the message-forwarding decision. If the one-hop relay is not closer to the destination node or moving away from it, its centrality value in the network is used instead. Based on both synthetic and real mobility scenarios, the simulation results show that the proposed policy performs incomparable efforts to some typical routing policies, such as Epidemic, PRoPHETv2, temporal closeness and centrality-based (TCCB), transient community-based (TC), and geographic-based spray-and-relay (GSaR) routing policies. In many wireless networks, such as ad hoc, sensor, and delay-tolerant networks, the destination node is determined from the source node by the flooding process. Flooding efficiency is important for nodes, because they are driven by limited batteries. In this paper, we propose a simple flooding scheme to transmit a route request (RREQ) message based on the remaining power of its own node without using control packets and complex calculations. We applied the proposed scheme to ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol as an example and carried out computer simulations (ns3). The results showed that the proposed scheme was superior to conventional schemes in static and mobile scenarios. First, we showed the limit of node density that causes the decrease of throughput in the proposed scheme and that the proposed scheme was superior in terms of energy efficiency (bits/J), including throughput and energy consumption. Next, as the number of flooding times is made uniform in the proposed scheme, all nodes will have almost the same battery replacement time. Caching-enabled device-to-device (D2D) networks have the potential to make mobile users directly fetch requested files from nearby users, resulting in low network delay. In addition, user mobility can increase the communication chances among different users, and therefore, the network delay can be further effectively reduced by proper designing the caching strategy. In this paper, mobility-aware caching strategies in D2D networks are studied to minimize the network delay. Specifically, based on the inter-contact user mobility model, the expression of the average file delivery delay is analytically obtained. Considering the limited cache capacity, a delay minimization cache placement problem considering the user mobility is investigated. To optimally solve this nonlinear integer programming problem, we reformulate it as a multistage decision problem. According to the recursive relationship between adjacent stages, dynamic programming is adopted to obtain the optimal mobility-aware caching strategy stage-by-stage. Furthermore, to lower the complexity, we also demonstrate that the original problem can be recasted as a monotone submodular function maximization problem over a matroid constraint. Then, a low-complexity greedy mobility-aware caching strategy with $(1-1/e)$ -optimality performance guarantee is put forward. Numerical results show that, in the scenario with high user mobility, the file delivery delay can be reduced by 47% with our proposed mobility-aware caching strategy, as compared with the most popular caching. Two of the most dominant challenges in post disaster emergency resource allocation are: 1) understanding the exact utility, i.e., exigency, of emergency resources and 2) collecting and transmitting the need for these resources to the control station from where resources are allocated. Measuring the utility of resources with precision becomes tricky in a dynamic post disaster scenario, where demands are constantly evolving and supplies trickle in at an uncertain rate. Moreover, collection and transmission of resource needs of far-flung areas are easier said than done owing to the post disaster disruption of communication infrastructure. These result in the ad-hoc allocation of emergency resources to the shelters. In this paper, we first derive a utility function for dynamically enumerating the shelter specific utility of each emergency resource. Subsequently, we propose an opportunistic knowledge sharing scheme for gathering and disseminating resource needs to the control station using a smartphone-based delay tolerant network. Finally, based on these opportunistically transmitted needs, we formulate a utility driven optimal resource allocation model which minimizes overall resource deficit and total resource deployment time. The proposed system optimally assigns constrained emergency resources to different shelters, so that high-utility resources are deployed fast. The effectiveness of the proposed system is evaluated using ONE simulator and LINGO optimization modeling tool. Exhaustive simulation is done to evaluate the comparative performance of our system with a number of competing schemes. Results show that our system outperforms all these schemes in a fully connected scenario. In this paper, we consider $K$ –user interference channels with $M$ antennas per node and with backhaul collaboration in one side (among the transmitters or among the receivers), for $M,K\in \mathbb {N}$ , and investigate the tradeoff between the rate in the channel versus the communication load in the backhaul. In this investigation, each node is equipped with $M$ antennas and we focus on a first order approximation result, where the rate of the wireless channel is measured by the degrees of freedom (DoF) per user, and the load of the backhaul is measured by the entropy of backhaul messages per user normalized by $\log $ of transmit power, at high power regimes. This tradeoff is fully characterized for the case of even values of $K$ and approximately characterized for the case of odd values of $K$ , with vanishing approximation gap as $K$ grows. To achieve DoF of $M$ per user, this result establishes the asymptotic optimality of the most straightforward scheme, called central processing, in which the messages are collected at one of the nodes, centrally processed, and forwarded back to each node. In addition, this result shows that the gain of the schemes, relying on distributed processing, through pairwise communication among the nodes (e.g., cooperative alignment) does not scale with the size of the network. For the converse, we develop a new outer-bound on the tradeoff based on splitting the set of collaborative nodes (transmitters or receivers) into two subsets and assuming full cooperation within each group. We further present a sufficient condition on the wireless channel connectivity, which although more relaxed, guarantees the validity of the above tradeoff. As the typical delay tolerant networks, the satellite networks possess the intermittent connections, the large-scale time delays and the time-varying topologies. Obviously, such features seriously affect the delivery of mission data with certain requirements on the traffic or latency. To decrease the delivery time, existing relay-based contact graph routing (CGR) method selects the earliest reachable path to forward mission data. However, this method cannot guarantee the transmission of a large amount data and wastes the rare contact opportunities. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on the transmission QoS problem of multiple missions over the satellite networks, and design a QoS support routing strategy to achieve multiple flow-maximizing paths with acceptable delivery delays. Especially, with the storage time aggregated graph (STAG), we construct an on-demand mission model to depict both the network dynamic characteristics and the different mission requirements, and then reduce the QoS support problem as a graph-based maximum flow problem. To solve this problem, one STAG-based multiple flow-maximizing routing scheme is proposed to ensure the mission QoS and match the rare network resources, which has low computation complexity. Wireless sensor network (WSN) is an emerging technology used in emergency scenarios. There are a number of possible threats to WSNs because they use unsupervised IP addresses. Securing networks with unattended sensors is a real challenge nowadays. Sensor nodes lack power and storage, making them incompatible with normal security checks. How to select proper relay nodes to ensure the successful delivery of messages is still a hot topic in delay tolerant networks (DTN). In this paper, we propose a probabilistic Spray-and-Wait routing algorithm based on node interest preference (called NIP-PSW). Firstly, considering the influence of the social attributes of nodes, we define a metric called node interest preference (NIP) to measure the probability of nodes becoming friends. Secondly, in view of the influence of node quality and connection time between nodes on message forwarding, we define the delivery probability (DP). Finally, according to the historical information of nodes, the node interest similarity (NIS) is proposed. In spray phase, NIP and DP are used to select the relay node and allocate the number of message copies adaptively. In wait phase, it is judged whether to forward the message to the encountering nodes again according to the NIS and the DP. In addition, the concept of message storage value (MSV) and the acknowledgment (ACK) mechanism are introduced to manage the buffer of nodes. The simulation results show that the NIP-PSW not only can significantly improve the delivery rate and reduce the average delay but also shows good performance in network overhead and average number of hops. Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) are characterized by high end-to-end latency, frequent disconnection, and opportunistic communication over unreliable wireless links. In this paper, we design and validate a dynamic trust management protocol for secure routing optimization in DTN environments in the presence of well-behaved, selfish and malicious nodes. We develop a novel model-based methodology for the analysis of our trust protocol and validate it via extensive simulation. Moreover, we address dynamic trust management, i.e., determining and applying the best operational settings at runtime in response to dynamically changing network conditions to minimize trust bias and to maximize the routing application performance. We perform a comparative analysis of our proposed routing protocol against Bayesian trust-based and non-trust based (PROPHET and epidemic) routing protocols. The results demonstrate that our protocol is able to deal with selfish behaviors and is resilient against trust-related attacks. Furthermore, our trust-based routing protocol can effectively trade off message overhead and message delay for a significant gain in delivery ratio. Our trust-based routing protocol operating under identified best settings outperforms Bayesian trust-based routing and PROPHET, and approaches the ideal performance of epidemic routing in delivery ratio and message delay without incurring high message or protocol maintenance overhead. Performance of routing protocols for mobile ad hoc network is affected by mobility environments of mobile nodes. In this paper, we perform analysis of different Delay Tolerant Routing protocols in different mobility environments. Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) is a mobile ad hoc network in which every node does not have wireless connection with other nodes all the time i.e. there is no path from one node to other nodes and data delivery path cannot be calculated before sending data. Traditional ad hoc routing protocols cannot be used in DTN. Nodes in DTN are resource constrained, i.e. they have less energy (battery operated) and have less memory to buffer messages. It is important to utilize the resources efficiently in DTN. In this paper, we perform analysis of three important DTN routing protocols to investigate their resource utilization, especially energy consumption under three different mobility environments. Furthermore, we also compare their message delivery probability and message overhead ratio. We extensively simulate different protocols under different mobility environments by changing number of nodes, message size and message generation interval. Delay-tolerant networks often adopt the message replication methodology to increase the opportunity that destinations can receive messages from a source node in a network. Repeatedly replicating messages, however, consumes significant resources such as local buffer space on nodes and internode communication bandwidth. Previous buffer management and scheduling policies mainly contributed to a simple scenario of message unicasting from a source to a singular destination in a network. When message multicasting toward multiple destinations is considered, previous solutions perform inefficiently. This paper proposes a new buffer management and scheduling policy for message multicasting in delay-tolerant networks. The proposed policy is an optimal-based design with a new utility function, which can prioritize messages in a buffer for maximizing the successful delivery rate in a network.
