Autonomous Vehicles (AV) technology is emerging. Field tests on public roads have been on going in several states in the US as well as in Europe and Asia. During the US public road tests, crashes with AV involved happened, which becomes a concern to the public. Most previous studies on AV safety relied heavily on assessing drivers’ performance and behaviors in a simulation environment and developing automated driving system performance in a closed field environment. However, contributing factors and the mechanism of AV-related crashes have not been comprehensively and quantitatively investigated due to the lack of field AV crash data. By harnessing California’s Report of Traffic Collision Involving an Autonomous Vehicle Database, which includes the AV crash data from 2014 to 2018, this paper investigates by far the most current and complete AV crash database in the US using statistical modeling approaches that involve both ordinal logistic regression and CART classification tree. The quantitative analysis based on ordinal logistic regression and CART models has successfully explored the mechanism of AV-related crash, via both perspectives of crash severity and collision types. Particularly, the CART model reveals and visualize the hierarchical structure of the AV crash mechanism with knowledge of how these traffic, roadway, and environmental contributing factors can lead to crashes of various serveries and collision types. Statistical analysis results indicate that crash severity significantly increases if the AV is responsible for the crash. The highway is identified as the location where severe injuries are likely to happen. AV collision types are affected by whether the vehicle is on automated driving mode, whether the crashes involve pedestrians/cyclists, as well as the roadway environment. The method used in this research provides a proven approach to statistically analyze and understand AV safety issues. And this benefit is potential be even enhanced with an increasing sample size of AV-related crashes records in the future. This Article will critically examine various legal and market initiatives to increase diversity in corporations, with the aim of assessing their effectiveness. The initiatives explored in this Article include quota laws in Europe (including recent amendments in France and Germany which introduce quotas for executive director positions) and California; disclosure laws in the U.S., Nasdaq, and U.K.; and initiatives by institutional investors. The main argument this Article makes is that both quotas and quantitative disclosures do not provide the right incentives for corporations to make genuine efforts to improve diversity. The alternative this Article proposes is not to simply leave matters as is, but rather for all those involved in the diversity project--legislators, investors, and the general public--to steer the discourse towards long-term and sustained change. One way to push corporations in this direction is to encourage qualitative disclosures which will incentivise innovative and firm-specific solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the places of origin of international students and their distribution in the United States higher education. The data concerning the population of international students were obtained from the official website of International Institution of Education (IIE), and transferred into three maps using geographic information systems (GIS) software so that a more direct view of the data was available. The results of the study showed that (1) A larger proportion of international students come from Asian countries; (2) California, New York, and Texas are the top three states hosting international students; (3) most of the universities enrolling international students are located in the eastern part of the country; and (4) the states with already large international student populations experienced a faster growth in the population of international students over the past five years. Some implications for policy planning are discussed at the end of this paper.

Summary: Over the last 20 years, global production of Persian walnut (Juglans regia L.) has grown enormously, likely reflecting increased consumption due to its numerous benefits to human health. However, advances in genome‐wide association (GWA) studies and genomic selection (GS) for agronomically important traits in walnut remain limited due to the lack of powerful genomic tools. Here, we present the development and validation of a high‐density 700K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array in Persian walnut. Over 609K high‐quality SNPs have been thoroughly selected from a set of 9.6 m genome‐wide variants, previously identified from the high‐depth re‐sequencing of 27 founders of the Walnut Improvement Program (WIP) of University of California, Davis. To validate the effectiveness of the array, we genotyped a collection of 1284 walnut trees, including 1167 progeny of 48 WIP families and 26 walnut cultivars. More than half of the SNPs (55.7%) fell in the highest quality class of 'Poly High Resolution' (PHR) polymorphisms, which were used to assess the WIP pedigree integrity. We identified 151 new parent‐offspring relationships, all confirmed with the Mendelian inheritance test. In addition, we explored the genetic variability among cultivars of different origin, revealing how the varieties from Europe and California were differentiated from Asian accessions. Both the reconstruction of the WIP pedigree and population structure analysis confirmed the effectiveness of the Applied Biosystems™ Axiom™ J. regia 700K SNP array, which initiates a novel genomic and advanced phase in walnut genetics and breeding. This study is the first on the genetics of invasive populations of one of the most widely spread land mollusc species known in the world, the "Brown Snail" Cornu aspersum aspersum. Deliberately or accidentally imported, the species has become recently a notorious pest outside its native Mediterranean range. We compared the spatial structure and genetic variability of invasive (America, Oceania, South Africa) versus native populations using five microsatellite loci and mitochondrial (Cyt b and 16S rRNA) genes as a first step towards (i) the detection of potential source populations, and (ii) a better understanding of mechanisms governing evolutionary changes involved in the invasion process. Results based on multivariate analysis (Discriminant Analysis of Principal Components), Bayesian statistical inference (Clustering, Approximate Bayesian Computation) and demographic tests allowed a construction of the introduction pathways of the species over recent centuries. While emigrants originated from only one of the two native lineages, the West one, the most likely scenario involved several introduction events and "source switching" comprising (i) an early stage (around 1660) of simultaneous introductions from Europe (France, Spain) towards Oceania (New Zealand) and California, (ii) from the early 18th century, a second colonization wave from bridgehead populations successfully established in California, (iii) genetic admixture in invasive areas where highly divergent populations came into contact as in New Zealand. Although these manmade pathways are consistent with historical data, introduction time estimates suggest that the two putative waves of invasion would have occurred long before the first field observations recorded, both in America and in Oceania. A prolonged lag period as the use of an incorrect generation time could explain such 100-150 years discrepancy. Lastly, the contrasting patterns of neutral genetic signal left in invasive populations are discussed in light of possible ways of facing novel environments (standing genetic variation versus new mutation). This study addresses a paradox in the literature involving the parenting style of Asians: Chinese parenting has often been described as "controlling" or "authoritarian". These styles of parenting have been found to be predictive of poor school achievement among European-Americans, and yet the Chinese are performing quite well in school. This study suggests that the concepts of authoritative and authoritarian are somewhat ethnocentric and do not capture the important features of Chinese child rearing, especially for explaining their school success. Immigrant Chinese and European-American mothers of preschool-aged children were administered standard measures of parental control and authoritative-authoritarian parenting style as well as Chinese child-rearing items involving the concept of "training." After controlling for their education, and their scores on the standard measures, the Chinese mothers were found to score significantly higher on the "training" ideologies. This "training" concept has important features, beyond the authoritarian concept, that may explain Chinese school success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
