The 2019 International Conference on Modeling and Analysis of Semiconductor Manufacturing (MASM 2019) was part of the 2019 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC) that was held December 8–11 in National Harbor, MD, USA. The MASM conferences provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and industrial innovations between researchers and practitioners from around the world involved in modeling and analysis of complex high-tech manufacturing systems. While the papers from MASM conferences are of high quality and are often cited in journal papers, they are limited in size. As a premier journal for topics covered in the MASM conferences, IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing, agreed to consider extended article submissions based on the 21 papers accepted and presented at the MASM 2019 conference for a Special Section of an upcoming issue of the journal. were sessions on Scheduling and Dispatching, Fab Scheduling, Maintenance and Engineering, Capacity and Production Planning, Qualification and Wafer-to-Order Allocation, Semiconductor Manufacturing Models, and Semiconductor Modeling Representations. Space charge is a threat to insulation materials and oil-paper insulation gradually degrades in service. The degradation of cellulose affects space charge formation, accumulation and dissipation, and the presence of space charge affects the performance of dielectric. In this paper, the effect of thermal aging on space charge behaviors and other properties including permittivity, conductivity, and tensile strength was investigated. Oil-paper samples were aged at a hot spot temperature (180?). During thermal aging, space charge distribution was measured at a regular interval at room temperature. And the pulse electro-acoustic (PEA) method was used for space charge measurement. The results showed that the thermal aging at hot spot temperature caused increase of conductivity and tensile strength degradation. The permittivity increased at the beginning but then it decreased, while dissipation factor showed an upward trend. Besides these, trap distribution and carriers characteristics were also affected. The formations of space charge of unaged and aged oil paper were consequently different under low electric field. Due to the generation of traps by the degradation of cellulose, more charge, especially positive charge was trapped, but the increased traps mostly were shallow traps. Based on the Schottky model, a correlation between space charge injection and the permittivity was drawn. This, together with the appearance of positive bulk charge could be used for oil paper aging status diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper exploits smart inverters of distributed energy resources (DERs) for the mitigation of fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR). According to the IEEE Standard 1547-2018, smart inverters with voltage ride-through and var injection capabilities are promising technologies for mitigating FIDVR. This paper quantitatively investigates the effectiveness of smart inverters for FIDVR from a system-wide perspective. It shows that the penetration of smart inverters and induction motors are important factors affecting mitigation success. In addition, the over-voltages at the end of FIDVR due to load disconnections can be prevented with coordinated control of DERs and automated switching capacitors. The control scheme of smart inverters used for FIDVR is extended from the distributed volt/var droop control to include low- and high-voltage ride-through capabilities. The IEEE 13-bus feeder, the 8500-node test feeder, and the IEEE 390-node low-voltage network test system are used to illustrate the impact of DER penetration. For example, one can determine the residential air conditioner penetration level (for a given system at certain DER penetration level) that makes a system susceptible to FIDVR. With this Special Issue, we are publishing 81 peer-reviewed manuscripts, a selection from the best work presented in June 2019 at the 28th IEEE Symposium on Fusion Engineering (SOFE), Jacksonville, FL, USA. This is the sixth SOFE Special Issue that IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON PLASMA SCIENCE (TPS) has published, a tradition that started with the 2009 SOFE in order to afford attendees the opportunity to publish an expanded version of their oral or poster presentations in a refereed journal. It has become a popular option. With each successive SOFE, more authors take advantage of the possibility offered by TPS to have their conference papers gain wider exposure and be cited by others working in fusion engineering and its related disciplines. Readers benefit as well. For example, this issue features a total of 22 papers on ITER and Wendelstein 7-X, a unique collection of papers on two projects that sit at the forefront of fusion engineering. In this paper, a novel repetitive control scheme is presented and discussed, based on the so-called B-spline filters. These dynamic filters are able to generate a B-spline trajectory if they are fed with the sequence of control points defining the curve. Therefore, they are ideal tools for generating online reference signals with the prescribed level of smoothness for driving dynamic systems, possibly together with a feedforward compensator. In particular, a continuous zero phase error tracking controller (ZPETC) can be used for tracking control of nonminimum phase systems but because of its open-loop nature it cannot guarantee the robustness with respect to modeling errors and exogenous disturbances. For this reason, ZPETC and trajectory generator have been embedded in a repetitive control scheme that allows to nullify interpolation errors even in nonideal conditions, provided that the desired reference trajectory and the disturbances are periodic. This paper is based on the results presented in the conference paper [L. Biagiotti, F. Califano, and C. Melchiorri, “Repetitive control of non-minimum phase systems along b-spline trajectories,” in Proc. IEEE 55th Conf. Decis. Control, 2016, pp. 5496–5501.], where asymptotic stability of the overall control scheme has been proved mathematically, but extends such results with an experimental validation based on a nonminimum phase system. Different models of the same physical system have been identified and used in the implementation of this model-based control scheme, allowing a real evaluation of the relationship between control system performance and model accuracy. A wideband Rayleigh fading channel is considered with causal channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter and no receiver CSI. A simple orthogonal code with energy detection rule at the receiver (similar to pulse position modulation in IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 46, no. 4, Apr. 2000 and IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 52 no. 5, May 2006) is shown to achieve the capacity of this channel in the wideband limit. This strategy transmits energy only when the channel gain exceeds a threshold, hence only needs causal transmitter CSI. In the wideband limit, this capacity without any receiver CSI is the same as the capacity with full receiver CSI, which is proportional to the logarithm of the bandwidth. Similar threshold-based pulse position modulation is shown to achieve the capacity per unit cost of the dirty-tape channel (dirty paper channel with causal transmitter CSI and no receiver CSI), which equals its capacity per unit cost with full receiver CSI. Then, a general discrete channel with i.i.d. states is considered. Each input has an associated cost and a zero cost input “0” exists. The channel state is assumed to be known at the transmitter in a causal manner. Capacity per unit cost is found for this channel and a simple orthogonal code is shown to achieve this capacity. Later, a novel orthogonal coding scheme is proposed for the case of causal transmitter CSI and a condition for equivalence of capacity per unit cost for causal and noncausal transmitter CSI is derived. This paper presents a novel cooperative control technique concerning fully-distributed AC/DC microgrids. Distributed generation based on inverters has two types, i.e., Current Source Inverter (CSI), also referred to as PQ inverter, and Voltage Source Inverter (VSI). Both inverter forms have a two-layer coordination mechanism. This paper proposes a design method for the digital Proportional-Resonant (PR) controller that regulates the current inside an inverter. The inverters will improve the voltage quality of the microgrid while maintaining the average voltage of buses at the same desired level. There is comprehensive detail on the computations specific to resonant and proportional gains and digital resonance path coefficients. The paper includes a digital PR controller design and its analysis in the frequency domain. The analysis is based on the w-domain. The main contribution of this paper is the proposed method, which not only focuses on the transient response but also improves the steady-state response which smoothens the voltage; furthermore, all inverters are effectively involved to increase the capacity of the microgrid for better power management. The suggested cooperative control technique is used on an IEEE 14-bus system having fully distributed communication. The convincing outcomes indicate that the suggested control technique is an effectual means of regulating the microgrid's voltage to obtain an evener and steady voltage profile. The microgrid comprises distributed resources and is used as the primary element to analyse power flow and quality indicators associated with a smart grid. 5G (5th Generation) and the related technologies implementation are expected in 2020. The 5G is considered to be a breakthrough of IoT devices in terms of enhanced bandwidth, efficiency, reliability and energy consumption. This study focuses on quantitative and qualitative progression of research in the field of 5G. It also provides the publishing trend, most productive and cited countries, organizations, and authors on 5G. In addition, it identifies the most frequently used keywords, authorship pattern and preferred journals. The research is based on 5G related research from Scopus database, which includes all relevant keywords of the field limiting it to conference papers, articles, book chapters, editorial and books. The outcome of the study revealed that 5G related research is on the rise worldwide. The number of yearly published articles has increased from one to 2222 during the period between 2003 and 2020. China, United States and United-Kingdom are most productive countries. Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications have taken lead in publishing 5G research. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that 19 out of these 20 most productive organizations in the world, seven belong to China. Majority of top 10 preferred journals are Q1 and published by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). The most popular authorship pattern is three-authors. This year the IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation (TDEI) is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. TDEI actually began in 1994 when 'Dielectrics' was added to the previous title of the same publication of IEEE Transactions on Electrical Insulation (TEI). The first issue of TEI was published in March 1965, fifty years ago, with a very modest beginning. That first issue, which can be accessed on IEEE Xplore, had only four papers constituting a total of 19 printed pages. TEI was international in outlook right from its beginning. The four papers in the first issue were submitted from Japan (one paper) and the USA (three papers). The second issue of TEI was published in November 1965 and had papers from the United Kingdom (two) and the USA (one). In its first year TEI had a total of seven papers totaling 48 pages. These papers covered a wide range of topics such as electrical failure of organic insulators, thermal behavior of enamel wires and other solid insulation, electrical breakdown of solids and gaseous insulation. Energy management for energy harvesting-based embedded systems (EHES) is an emerging field, which aims to collect renewable energy from the environment to power an embedded system. In this work, we use the systematic mapping method to study the relevant literature, with the objective of exploring and analysing the state of the art in energy management for EHES, as well as to provide assistance for subsequent literature reviews. To this end, we conducted extensive searches to find articles related to energy harvesting, embedded systems, energy consumption, and energy management. We searched for papers from January 2005 to July 2019 from three mainstream databases, ACM, IEEE Xplore, and Web of Science, and found more than 3000 papers about EHES. Finally, we selected 142 eligible papers. We have completed the system mapping research from five aspects, namely, (1) research type (validation research, evaluation research, solution proposal, philosophical paper, opinion, and experience), (2) research goals (application or theory), (3) application scenarios, (4) tools or methods, and (5) paper distribution, such as publication year and authors' nationality. The results showed that the major research type of the EHES papers is validation research, accounting for 65%, which indicated research is still in the theoretical stage and many researchers focus on how to improve the efficiency of harvesting energy, develop a reasonable energy supply plan, and adapt EHES for real-world requirements. Furthermore, this work reviews the tools used for EHES. As the future development direction, it is indispensable to provide tools to EHES for research, testing, development, and so on.
