This paper presents an experimental campaign conducted next to the Condoroma dam, in Perú, at 4075 m a.s.l. The tests carried out in this paper were conducted in a 21 m long channel located at the toe of Condoroma dam. The setup consisted of a series of standard profile spillways with a vertical upstream face of up to five different dimensionless heights (P/Hd) ranging from 0.5 to 2. The experimental results indicated that, the P/Hd ratio influences the discharge coefficients in Condoroma, and P/Hd ≥ 1 values are recommended for the design of the spillway profile. In addition, for all the P/Hd ratios studied, the discharge coefficients adjusted to the Condoroma altitude were lower than those reported by classical formulations used in conventional spillway designs. Finally, a generalized equation is proposed to estimate the discharge coefficient for standard spillways located in dams at similar elevations above sea level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nowadays, high voltage circuit breaker (CB) simulations are mostly based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models. Such simulations require significant computer resources. An alternative approach is to use enthalpy flow models, which do not use space discretization of the interrupter unit chambers and valves. Gas flow is calculated based on state of gas in adjacent chambers and valve settings. However, the valve shape has significant influence on the effective flow cross section between chambers. Therefore, in order to ensure correct simulation results, it is necessary to determine the correct values of discharge coefficients for all valves in the interrupter unit of a circuit breaker. In this paper, the discharge coefficients were determined by combining a series of CFD and enthalpy flow simulations for each valve in the interrupter unit. After that, discharge coefficients are used as input for further simulations based on the enthalpy flow model. This way, benefits from both models are combined: more precise gas flow calculation and faster simulations. The proposed novel approach is validated in a high-power laboratory by pressure measurements on a 420 kV 63 kA self-blast circuit breaker. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A method is presented for the hydraulic design and analysis of labyrinth weirs based upon the experimental results of physical modeling. Discharge coefficient data for labyrinth weirs with quarter-round and half-round crest shapes are presented for sidewall angles ranging from 6 to 35°. Cycle efficiency is also introduced as a design aid, which compares the hydraulic performance of different cycle geometries. Geometric parameters that affect flow performance are discussed. The predictive accuracy of the design method is evaluated through comparisons to previously published labyrinth weir head-discharge data. The sharp-crested weir is the most commonly used device in channels for flow measurement and flow regulation due to its simplicity. Attempts have been made to study in detail the flow over different shapes of normal conventional weirs, side weirs, and oblique weirs. Most of the investigators have expressed the discharge coefficient as a function of various parameters. The concern of this paper is to study flow over an inclined inverted triangular notch weir. Based on experimental work on 0° (normal) and 15, 30, 45, and 60° weirs, the writers have established an equation for discharge in terms of the inclination angle of the weir plane with the plane normal to the flow axis. A new general algebraic optimization procedure has been developed for evolving a linear head-discharge relationship for an inclined inverted V-notch (IIVN), which is relatively superior to similar procedures developed earlier. It has been shown that the IIVN does not lose its near-linear discharging characteristics even when it is inclined to the channel bed. The discharge estimated by the linear discharge-head relationship has been found to be in good agreement with the actual discharges well within a ±5% error. This paper reports the results of a laboratory study of the effects of (i) manhole proximity to installation site, (ii) pipe slope (i.e., approach velocity), (iii) upstream head measurement location, and (iv) submergence on the "hydraulics" of two types of sewer weirs used by the City of Ottawa. The City's streamlined form of broad-crested weir and its compound-shaped sharp-crested weir were initially calibrated for a "pipe straight"-arrangement (no upstream manhole is present) for a wide range of flow conditions at 0.2%, 0.4%, and 1.0% pipe slopes. The calibration tests were then repeated with the weirs positioned immediately downstream of a model manhole structure ("manhole"-arrangement). Even though the behavior of aerostatic bearings has for long been the topic of extensive research, there are still many aspects that require further investigation. Among these, the identification of the discharge coefficients is one the most crucial. This paper presents a hybrid method to identify the discharge coefficients of aerostatic bearing orifices. The method is termed as hybrid since it exploits experimental data and the equations of the analytical model of a circular and centrally fed aerostatic pad. The suspensions used in heavy vehicles often consist of several oil and two gas chambers. In order to perform an analytical study of the mass flow transferred between two gas chambers separated by a nozzle, and when considering the gas as compressible and real, it is usually needed to determine the discharge coefficient of the nozzle. The nozzle configuration analyzed in the present study consists of a T shape, and it is used to separate two nitrogen chambers employed in heavy vehicle suspensions. In the present study, under compressible dynamic real flow conditions and at operating pressures, discharge coefficients were determined based on experimental data. A test rig was constructed for this purpose, and air was used as working fluid. The study clarifies that discharge coefficients for the T shape nozzle studied not only depend on the pressure gradient between chambers but also on the flow direction. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations, using air as working fluid and when flowing in both nozzle directions, were undertaken, as well, and the fluid was considered as compressible and ideal. The CFD results deeply helped in understanding why the dynamic discharge coefficients were dependent on both the pressure ratio and flow direction, clarifying at which nozzle location, and for how long, chocked flow was to be expected. Experimentally-based results were compared with the CFD ones, validating both the experimental procedure and numerical methodologies presented. Effect of film hole diameter to discharge coefficients and film cooling effectiveness of the lamilloy were experimentally investigated at the blowing ratios ranging from 0.6 to 2.5. Generally, the cooling effectiveness on the test surface is increased with the film hole diameters and blowing ratios increasing, and the variation tendency along the streamwise through the centerline of film holes also keeps consistent. In the upstream, all configurations have a relatively lower cooling effectiveness, however, with the flows to the downstream, cooling effectiveness grows gradually, and the peak values of effectiveness appeared periodically, the position matches the film hole positions. Besides, between the film holes, fluctuation exists simultaneously. By comparison, the cooling effectiveness and discharge coefficients are both increased with the blowing ratio with same film hole diameters, Moreover, under the same blowing ratios, the cooling effectiveness and discharge coefficients are getting higher when hole diameters increase. This study aims to obtain sharp crested triangular side-weirs discharge coefficients both in the straight channel and along the bend by using a total of 1,735 experiments. It was found that triangular side-weirs discharging coefficients along the bend depend on the upstream Froude number in the main channel (F), the apex angle of side-weir (θ), and the bend angle (α). Because there is much greater intensity of secondary flow created by lateral flow with an increase of the overflow length, sharp crested triangular side-weirs discharge coefficients of the apex angle θ=120° were achieved more frequently than the others even at the straight channel in subcritical flow conditions. In a curved channel, the path of maximum velocity and the secondary current created by the bend both cause a much greater deviation angle towards the side-weir which is involved within F and L/b. Therefore, triangular side-weirs discharging coefficients along the bend are greater than the values obtained in the straight channel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Laboratory experiments and numerical simulations are performed to measure discharge coefficients in the case of a gate located on the upstream wall of a weir for flood storage. The effect of the gate slope and the side contraction have been taken into account. The study was first performed experimentally, when three series of tests were carried out with (and without) a broad crested weir located under the gate, at different values of the inclination angle of the weir upstream wall, and at different values of the shape ratio and the relative opening. In order to provide useful suggestions for those involved in sluice gate construction and management, three equations were obtained based on multiple regression, relating the discharge coefficient to different parameters that characterize the phenomenon at hand, separating the case when the broad-crested weir was present. Then numerical simulations were executed by means of the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with the k-ε turbulence closure model and in conjunction with the volume of fluid (VOF) method, to validate the numerical results against the experimental and to possibly investigate phenomena not caught by the experimental measurements. Simulated discharges were very close to the observed ones showing that the proposed three-dimensional numerical procedure is a favorable option to correctly reproduce the phenomenon.
