To verify the psychometric properties of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the Falls Behavioral (FaB-Brazil) Scale in Parkinson's disease (PD). Participants (n = 96) were assessed by disease-specific, self-report and functional mobility measures. Internal consistency of the FaB-Brazil scale was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha and inter-rater and test–retest reliability using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). The standard error of measurement (SEM), minimal detectable change (MDC), ceiling and floor effects, and convergent and discriminative validity were evaluated. Internal consistency was moderate (α = 0.77). Excellent inter-rater (ICC = 0.90; p < 0.001) and test–retest (ICC = 0.91; p < 0.001) reliability were found. The SEM was 0.20 and MDC was 0.38. Ceiling and floor effects were not found. Convergent validity was established by the positive correlations between the FaB-Brazil scale and age, modified Hoehn and Yahr, PD duration, Movement Disorders Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, Motor Aspects of Experiences of Daily Living, Timed Up & Go and 8-item Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire, and negative correlations between the FaB-Brazil scale and community mobility, Schwab & England, and Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale. Females showed greater protective behaviors than males; recurrent fallers showed greater protective behaviors than non-recurrent fallers (p < 0.05). The FaB-Brazil scale is reliable and valid for assessing people with PD. Fall-related behaviors should be part of the fall risk assessment of community-dwelling people with Parkinson's disease. Learning to descend stairs requires motor and cognitive capacities on the part of infants and opportunities for practice and assurance of safety offered by caregivers. The American Academy of Pediatrics prescribes the age strategy to teach toddlers to safely descend stairs but without much consideration for individual differences in infants' skills or caregivers' techniques. The purpose of this study was to observe the natural ways in which caregivers teach infants to descend stairs at home and the extent to which infants abide. Of particular interest was to examine the dynamic nature of caregivers' teaching and infants' learning over the session with attention to individual differences. Dyads (N = 59) were videorecorded on Zoom for 10 min interacting on stairs at home in the United States, Brazil, Canada, Italy, and Spain. Infants (n = 30 girls, 29 boys; 13-month-olds ± 1 week) were novice walkers (M = 2.04 months walking experience). Caregivers used a variety of teaching strategies and focused on "backing" and "scooting." Infants were more likely to heed caregivers' guidance when caregivers provided hands-on support and verbal encouragement suggesting infants were engaged and responsive to caregivers' overtures. Infants' walking experience predicted change in descent strategy over the session. Although infants did not show evidence of learning over the session, consistent caregiver instruction suggested caregivers were persistent, if not effective, teachers. Teaching and learning motor skills in a potentially risky task creates a unique opportunity for interaction, allowing infants and caregivers to learn from one another. Public Significance Statement: This work contributes to the general body of knowledge regarding infant motor development and problem solving in specific contexts. This study is one of the first to explore the nature of caregiver-infant interaction on stairs and identifies caregiver teaching strategies and infant motor characteristics that are associated with safe infant stair descent. The aim of this article was to identify educational interventions on sexuality for parents of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities. This is an integrative literature review. In May, 2023, searches were carried out in 12 databases using the keywords: intellectual disability, sexuality, sexual communication, intervention, program, and parents and Boolean operators AND and OR. The thematic analysis of the nine articles found resulted in the theme: Sex education programs and their interventions, and three sub-themes: (a) conceptualization and design of the programs; (b) from taboo to confidence: increasing self-perception of competence to approach sex education; and (c) speaking the same language: how sex education can contribute to improving communication between parents and children with intellectual disabilities. The results showed that the interventions were effective in promoting positive changes in self-efficacy, contributed to increasing knowledge about sexuality, improved the quality and frequency of communication about sexuality in the family context, and addressed parents' beliefs and attitudes, considering their cultural and personal context with a view to promoting positive changes in these areas. The development of sex education strategies prepares parents and families for handling and safely guiding children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities. The interventions showed a positive impact on parents and their children. Future investigations combining quantitative and qualitative approaches to the evaluation of these sex education programs are necessary, in order to provide a broader and deeper view of the results achieved. This study comprehensively analyzed the temporal and spatial dynamics of COVID-19 cases and deaths within the obstetric population in Brazil, comparing the periods before and during mass COVID-19 vaccination. We explored the trends and geographical patterns of COVID-19 cases and maternal deaths over time. We also examined their correlation with the SARS-CoV-2 variant circulating and the social determinants of health. This is a nationwide population-based ecological study. We obtained data on COVID-19 cases, deaths, socioeconomic status, and vulnerability information for Brazil's 5570 municipalities for both the pre-COVID-19 vaccination and COVID-19 vaccination periods. A Bayesian model was used to mitigate indicator fluctuations. The spatial correlation of maternal cases and fatalities with socioeconomic and vulnerability indicators was assessed using bivariate Moran. From March 2020 to June 2023, a total of 23,823 cases and 1991 maternal fatalities were recorded among pregnant and postpartum women. The temporal trends in maternal incidence and mortality rates fluctuated over the study period, largely influenced by widespread COVID-19 vaccination and the dominant SARS-CoV-2 variant. There was a significant reduction in maternal mortality due to COVID-19 following the introduction of vaccination. The geographical distribution of COVID-19 cases and maternal deaths exhibited marked heterogeneity in both periods, with distinct spatial clusters predominantly observed in the North, Northeast, and Central West regions. Municipalities with the highest Human Development Index reported the highest incidence rates, while those with the highest levels of social vulnerability exhibited elevated mortality and fatality rates. Despite the circulation of highly transmissible variants of concern, maternal mortality due to COVID-19 was significantly reduced following the mass vaccination. There was a heterogeneous distribution of cases and fatalities in both periods (before and during mass vaccination). The importance of religiousness in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) has been the subject of conflicting research. The impact of religiousness on quality of life and depressive symptoms has also been poorly studied in this population. This study investigated the correlation between religiousness and quality of life in patients with IPD. We evaluated 37 patients with IPD (according to the criteria of the Movement Disorders Society) who were from an outpatient clinic specializing in movement disorders in Brazil. We assessed the patients using the Duke University Religion Index and scales for motor impairment, cognition, quality of life, and depression. Spearman's test was used to check for possible correlations between the different dimensions of religiousness and the clinical variables analyzed. Background: Mortality rate estimation in small areas can be difficult due the low number of events/exposure (i.e. stochastic error). If the death records are not completed, it adds a systematic uncertainty on the mortality estimates. Previous studies in Brazil have combined demographic and statistical methods to partially overcome these issues. We estimated age- and sex-specific mortality rates for all 5,565 Brazilian municipalities in 2010 and forecasted probabilistic mortality rates and life expectancy between 2010 and 2030. Methods: We used a combination of the Tool for Projecting Age-Specific Rates Using Linear Splines (TOPALS), Bayesian Model, Spatial Smoothing Model and an ad-hoc procedure to estimate age- and sex-specific mortality rates for all Brazilian municipalities for 2010. Then we adapted the Lee-Carter model to forecast mortality rates by age and sex in all municipalities between 2010 and 2030. Results: The adjusted sex- and age-specific mortality rates for all Brazilian municipalities in 2010 reveal a distinct regional pattern, showcasing a decrease in life expectancy in less socioeconomically developed municipalities when compared to estimates without adjustments. The forecasted mortality rates indicate varying regional improvements, leading to a convergence in life expectancy at birth among small areas in Brazil. Consequently, a reduction in the variability of age at death across Brazil's municipalities was observed, with a persistent sex differential. Conclusion: Mortality rates at a small-area level were successfully estimated and forecasted, with associated uncertainty estimates also generated for future life tables. Introduction: Low educational attainment is a potential risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) development. Alpha-secretase ADAM10 plays a central role in AD pathology, attenuating the formation of beta-amyloid peptides and, therefore, their aggregation into senile plaques. This study seeks to investigate ADAM10 as a blood-based biomarker in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD in a diverse group of community-dwelling older adults, focusing on those with limited educational attainment. Methods: Participants were recruited from public health services. Cognition was evaluated using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination – Revised (ACE-R) batteries. Blood samples were collected to analyze plasma ADAM10 levels. A logistic regression was conducted to verify the influence of plasma ADAM10 on the AD diagnosis. Results: Significant differences in age, years of education, prescribed medications, and cognitive test scores were found between the MCI and AD groups. Regarding cognitive performance, both ACE-R and MMSE scores displayed significant differences between groups, with post hoc analyses highlighting these distinctions, particularly between AD and cognitively unimpaired individuals. Elevated plasma ADAM10 levels were associated with a 4.5-fold increase in the likelihood of a diagnosis of MCI and a 5.9-fold increase in the likelihood of a diagnosis of AD. These findings suggest ADAM10 levels in plasma as a valuable biomarker for assessing cognitive status in older individuals with low education attainment. Saliva measurements serve as a noninvasive tool for clinically monitoring newborns (NB) and children, a vulnerable population with promising potential for both research and clinical practice. Saliva acts as a repository for various inflammatory biomarkers involved in diverse biological functions. Particularly for children, it offers numerous advantages when compared to plasma and urine sampling. Nevertheless, there is a significant knowledge gap regarding detectable levels of cytokines in the saliva of newborns and children, as well as studies aiming to assess the relationship of this content with physiological and pathological processes. Objectives: To characterize the levels of 11 inflammatory mediators (IFNg, IL1b, IL2, IL4, IL6, IL8, IL10, IL12, IL17, TNF, and VEGF) in saliva samples from NB on the first and second day of hospitalization in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Method: Exploratory study, descriptive, nested within a primary clinical, observational, and prospective study, conducted in the NICU of a public hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. Demographic data and vital signs were recorded in the clinical records of 90 NB, and five saliva samples from 5 NB were collected between the first and second day of life (D1–D2) at approximately 8-hr intervals (8–9 am, 4–5 pm, and 11–12 pm). Saliva samples were used for the measurement of 11 cytokines (IFNg, IL1b, IL2, IL4, IL6, IL8, IL10, IL12, IL17, TNF, and VEGF). Results: Five NBs participated in this exploratory study, and the vital signs showed variability from the first (D1) to the second day (D2) of hospitalization, variability similar to that of the total population of the primary study. The presence and levels of the 11 cytokines were detected in the saliva samples, as well as a statistical correlation between 10 cytokines (IFNg, IL1b, IL2, IL4, IL6, IL10, IL12, IL17, TNF, and VEGF) and vital signs. Conclusions: The novelty of measuring inflammatory mediators in saliva samples from hospitalized NBs in the NICU is highlighted, providing support and new perspectives for the development of clinical and experimental research and an opportunity for developing and implementing new salivary biomarkers in different population segments. Objective: The aim of the study is to verify the effects of a 3-mo dual-task training on motor and cognitive functions in community-dwelling older adults. Design: In this prospective, single-blinded, controlled clinical trial, a total of 40 participants were allocated to either the experimental or the control (no-exercise) group. The intervention program consisted of a combination of motor and cognitive exercises conducted twice a week on nonconsecutive days. The main outcome measures were postural stability, mobility, fear of falling, and cognitive functions. Multiple analyses of variancewere used to assess the impact of the dual-task training. Effect sizes (η²p) were reported. Significance was set at 5%. Results: Compared with the control group, participants who underwent the dual-task training showed positive outcomes in terms of postural stability (η²p = 0.298, P = 0.020), mobility (η²p = 0.285, P = 0.003), and cognitive functions (η²p = 0.536, P = 0.001). No significant differences were observed between the groups in terms of the fear of falling (P = 0.566). Conclusions: Three-month dual-task training was beneficial for postural control, mobility, and cognitive functions in community-dwelling older adults. Objective: To understand the factors associated with the practice of chemsex among MSM in Brazil, especially during the Mpox health crisis, and to design effective prevention and intervention strategies specifically for this population. Design: A cross‐sectional and analytical study using an electronic survey, conducted from September to December 2022, during the peak of the Mpox outbreak in Brazil. Sample: A total of 1452 MSM aged 18 and older. Measurements: Data were collected via the REDCap platform through a survey with 46 questions. These addressed demographic data, sexual affiliations, practices, experiences with Mpox, healthcare service usage, and stigma or fear related to Mpox. Results: The prevalence of chemsex was 19.42% (n = 282). Multivariate Poisson modeling indicated a high incidence of chemsex among those diagnosed with Mpox and those involved in high‐risk behaviors. The practice of chemsex was six times higher among those diagnosed with Mpox (95% CI: 4.73–9.10). MSM who engage in bugchasing had a prevalence twice that of the main outcome (95% CI: 1.31–3.16). Conclusion: There is a significant need for targeted interventions for MSM in Brazil, especially given the Mpox outbreak. This study highlights the strong relationships between chemsex, experiences with Mpox, and various sexual behaviors, underscoring the importance of effective public health initiatives. Introduction: Burnout Syndrome (BS) emerges in the context of precarious working conditions, and manifests itself through a set of signs and symptoms that affect the worker's psychology due to exposure to stressors in the work environment. Objective: to analyze the prevalence and factors associated with Burnout Syndrome (BS) in intensive care nurses. Method: cross-sectional and analytical study, carried out with 94 nurses in intensive care units of a public hospital in the state of Bahia. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and a questionnaire containing sociodemographic, cultural and occupational issues were used. Results: 62.8% showed high emotional exhaustion; 64.9% high depersonalization and 77.7% high reduction in professional achievement. The factors associated with BS were: age up to 38 years (PR: 2.38; 95% CI: 1.44-3.94), not having a partner (PR: 1.97; 95% CI: 1.17-3.32), job dissatisfaction (PR: 1.78; 95% CI: 1.15-2.75), having back pain (PR: 3.33; 95% CI: 1.72-6.42), anxiety (PR: 2.33; 95% CI: 1.22-4.46) and sleep pattern up to 5 hours (PR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.08-2.59). It was found that having children is a protective index (PR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.33-0.90). Conclusion: there is a considered high percentage of nurses with a diagnosis suggestive of the syndrome (43.6%), as well as the existence of associated factors. It is essential that the institution offers a healthy work environment, in which prevention is the best way for these professionals not to become targets of the syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the high prevalence of sleep disturbances in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), the relationship between physical activity in daily life (PADL) and sleep in this population remains unclear Investigate the impact of sleep on different domains of PADL in IPF and characterize their PADL profile Sixty-seven participants (thirty-three with IPF and thirty-four healthy subjects [control group]) were included. The subjects underwent assessments of pulmonary function, exercise capacity, respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, PADL, sleep, dyspnea, and health-related quality of life. PADL and sleep measures were assessed using an activity monitor (Actigraph®, wGT3x-BT). Associations between sleep and PADL were done using correlation and regression models. In the IPF, sleep duration at night associated significantly with step counts, sedentary, light, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) (−0.82 ≤ R ≤ 0.43; p <.05 for all). Lung function and sleep partially explained PADL variables (0.19 ≤ R2 ≤ 0.65, p <.05 for all). Compared to controls, the IPF subjects presented lower step counts, less time spent in MVPA, standing position, and more time spent in lying position (p <.05, for all) Sleep duration is associated with PADL in IPF. In Cardiovascular Rehabilitation (CR), patient adherence to the maintenance phase is a major challenge. Virtual reality-based therapy (VRBT) promotes acute hemodynamic and autonomic repercussions similar to traditional rehabilitation and can increase patient adherence to the program. However, it is unknown whether the combination of VRBT to a traditional CR manages to maintain or even improve clinical and autonomic variables in long term. To analyze whether VRBT combination in a traditional CR can maintain or improve clinical and autonomic variables in cardiac patients in the maintenance phase of these programs. Twenty-six volunteers (62.04 ± 12.22 years) were evaluated, who underwent an initial assessment and two other assessments (in the sixth and 12th week) of the following outcomes: systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respiratory rate, pulse saturation of oxygen, heart rate, perceived exertion, and cardiac autonomic modulation, using linear and non-linear heart rate variability methods. Except for the apparent lack of clinical significance observed in Shannon Entropy, LF (nu), and HF (nu), the combination of VRBT as routine in a traditional program did not cause significant changes in the analyzed variables. combination of VRBT was able to maintain the chronic hemodynamic and autonomic repercussions caused by traditional CR. Background: The use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) by the elderly is commonly studied, but studies evaluating the use of PIM by frail elderly covered by prepaid health plans are still lacking. Objective: To identify the prevalence of use and the factors associated with the use of PIM by the elderly patients with high and moderate risk of clinical-functional vulnerability, according to the Beers criteria 2019. Methods: A cross-sectional study was developed with elderly people from a private health plan in Vitória-ES, Brazil. Socioeconomic, demographic and clinical data were collected through a digital platform and a structured questionnaire through an interview, from October 2018 to June 2019. The association between the use of PIM and independent variables was verified by univariate logistic regression with their respective confidence intervals (CI) 95%. The Multiple Model included the variables with P ≤.20. Results: 332 elderly patients were interviewed (mean age 81.5 years, gender 237 female, 95 male). A 65% prevalence of PIM use was identified. In the multiple logistic regression model, the variables associated with the use of PIM were self-medication (P =.004), high risk of clinical-functional vulnerability (P =.022), use of psychotropic medications (P =.000001), musculoskeletal medications (P =.04) and alimentary tract medications (P =.03). Physical exercises were considered a protection factor (P =.02). Background and Objectives: Cardiopulmonary and skeletal muscle impairment and poor physical activity are potential contributors to reduced functional capacity in cystic fibrosis (CF). The Glittre‐ADL test (TGlittre) has great potential for clinical use in adult CF adults, as it meets the need for a comprehensive assessment of physical function using tasks similar to activities of daily living. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of TGlittre in CF adults compared to the 6‐min walk test (6MWT) and, secondarily, to quantify the associations of their results with pulmonary function, muscle strength, and health‐related quality of life (HRQoL). Methods: This cross‐sectional study evaluated 34 CF adults and compared them with 34 subjects from a control group. The participants underwent the following assessments: functional capacity using TGlittre and 6MWT; spirometry; respiratory muscle strength; handgrip strength (HGS); and HRQoL using the Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire‐Revised (CFQ‐R). Results: While CF patients showed a longer time to perform TGlittre compared to controls (134 (119–150) versus 107 (95–126) % of the predicted time p = 0.0002), no difference between these groups was observed in the 6MWT. When the second TGlittre was compared to the first TGlittre, there was a significant decrease in total time for both CF patients (p < 0.0001) and controls (p = 0.0001). TGlittre time correlated with 6MWT distance (6MWD) (rs = −0.641, p < 0.0001), HGS (rs = −0.364, p = 0.034), peripheral oxygen saturation at the end of the test (rs = −0.463, p = 0.006) and the "digestive symptoms" domain of CFQ‐R (rs = 0.376, p = 0.028). TGlittre time was shorter in patients who engaged in regular physical activity (3.10 (2.49–3.39) min versus 3.28 (2.95–3.53) min, p = 0.016). Conclusions: TGlittre is more effective than the 6MWT in detecting limitations during exercise. There is an important learning effect of TGlittre in adult CF patients. Background and Purpose: Fibromyalgia (FM) is associated with altered descending pain modulatory pathways, which can be assessed through Conditioned Pain Modulation (CPM). In this study, we aimed to explore the relationship between CPM and self‐reported baseline characteristics in patients with fibromyalgia. We also performed a longitudinal analysis exploring CPM as a potential predictor of clinical improvement over time in individuals with FM. Methods: We performed cross‐sectional univariable and multivariable analyses of the relationship between CPM and other variables in 41 FM patients. We then performed longitudinal analyses, building linear mixed‐effects models with pain in the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) as the dependent variable, and testing for the interaction between time and CPM. We also tested the interaction between CPM and time in models using other outcomes, such as the revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire and Quality of Life Scale (QOLs). Results: We found no association between CPM and other demographic and clinical variables in the univariable analysis. We found a statistically significant association in the multivariable linear regression model between CPM and the QOLs at the baseline after controlling for age, sex, and duration of symptoms. In the longitudinal analyses, we found that CPM is an effect modifier for clinical improvement over time for the pain VAS, QOLs, and FIQR: individuals with low‐efficient CPM at the baseline have a different (improved) pattern of response over time when compared to those with high‐efficient CPM. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that CPM is not a reliable biomarker of clinical manifestations in chronic pain patients during cross‐sectional assessments. However, our results are consistent with previous findings that CPM can be used to predict the evolution of clinical pain over time. We expect that our findings will help in the selection of patients with the best profile to respond to specific interventions and assist clinicians in tailoring pain treatments. Background: Although dysarthria and respiratory failure are widely described in literature as part of the natural history of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the specific interaction between them has been little explored. Aim: To investigate the relationship between chronic respiratory failure and the speech of ALS patients. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional retrospective study we reviewed the medical records of all patients diagnosed with ALS that were accompanied by a tertiary referral center. In order to determine the presence and degree of speech impairment, the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-revised (ALSFRS-R) speech sub-scale was used. Respiratory function was assessed through spirometry and through venous blood gasometry obtained from a morning peripheral venous sample. To determine whether differences among groups classified by speech function were significant, maximum and mean spirometry values of participants were compared using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with Tukey's post hoc test. Results: Seventy-five cases were selected, of which 73.3% presented speech impairment and 70.7% respiratory impairment. Respiratory and speech functions were moderately correlated (seated FVC r = 0.64; supine FVC r = 0.60; seated FEV1 r = 0.59 and supine FEV1 r = 0.54, p <.001). Multivariable logistic regression revealed that the following variables were significantly associated with the presence of speech impairment after adjusting for other risk factors: seated FVC (odds ratio [OR] = 0.862) and seated FEV1 (OR = 1.106). The final model was 81.1% predictive of speech impairment. The presence of daytime hypercapnia was not correlated to increasing speech impairment. Conclusion: The restrictive pattern developed by ALS patients negatively influences speech function. Speech is a complex and multifactorial process, and lung volume presents a pivotal role in its function. Thus, we were able to find that lung volumes presented a significant correlation to speech function, especially in those with bulbar onset and respiratory impairment. Background: The pediatric palliative care (PPC) sets up an interdisciplinary approach of chronic complex diseases throughout birth to adolescence. It encompasses countless contrasts in development and diagnosis scopes, which make this area a challenge to nonpediatric practitioners. Objective: We sought to assess the most prevalent diseases in follow-up of the PPC team. Methods: We analyzed the medical records of PPC clinic during the years 2001 and 2021 and the diagnosis of outpatients. We established a parallel with the world scientific literature concerning the epidemiology of PPC. Results: The most prevalent diseases were epidermolysis bullosa (36.9%), followed by neurological Inherited Errors of Metabolism (IEM) diseases (19.0%), IEM diseases (14.3%), dysmorphological and chromosomal disorders (8.5%), skeletal disorders mainly osteogenesis imperfecta (6.9%), and liver transplantation conditions (5.5%) (p < 0.001). The less frequent conditions were external causes, such as neonatal insults or traffic accidents (2.8%), cancer (1.7%), congenital cardiopathies (1.4%), congenital infectious diseases (1.1%), gastrointestinal and hepatic conditions (0.8%), and rheumatological conditions (0.3%). The patients were older at diagnosis (6.9 years) and at PPC referral (13.2 years) than patients with epidermolysis bullosa and skeletal disorders and dysmorphological and chromosomal disorders were younger on referral. Conclusion: There are a lot of complex chronic conditions which could benefit from palliative care in pediatric setting. Insulin resistance (IR) is a key risk factor for chronic metabolic diseases, but its laboratory diagnosis is still costly; thus, the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been proposed as a surrogate method. Our aim was to provide a detailed analysis of cutoffs and test the hypothesis that the TyG index would present reasonable performance parameters for IR screening. This is a cross-sectional study with baseline data from 12,367 eligible participants of both sexes (aged 35–74 years) from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health. TyG correlation and agreement with the Homeostasis Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance were analyzed. Positive and negative predictive values (PV+, PV–) and likelihood ratio (LR+, LR–) were calculated. A moderate positive correlation between TyG and Homeostasis Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance was observed (Pearson r = 0.419). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of TyG for IR diagnosis was 0.742 and the optimal cutoff was 4.665, reaching a kappa agreement value of 0.354. For this cutoff, a PV+ of 59.3% and PV– of 76.0%, as well as an LR+ of 2.07 and LR– of 0.45 were obtained. Alternatively, because high sensitivity is desired for screening tests, selecting a lower cutoff, such as 4.505, increases the PV– to 82.1%, despite decreasing the PV+ to 50.8%. We conclude that TyG has important performance limitations for detecting IR, but that it may still be reasonably useful to help screening for IR in adults because it can be calculated from low-cost routine blood tests. Research on the TyG index's effectiveness in assessing insulin resistance yields varying outcomes. Our extensive study reveals notable limitations in TyG's diagnostic performance, especially in predictive values and likelihood ratios for IR diagnosis. Despite this, TyG remains reasonably useful for IR screening in adults, given its cost-effective calculation from routine blood tests. Combining TyG with other data can enhance insulin resistance screening for clinicians. Some studies have suggested an inflammatory role of the choroid plexus (CP) in the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis (MS), but mainly in adult patients. We aimed to evaluate clinical and MRI parameters in patients with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS). We included 10 patients with POMS and 16 healthy controls (HC), evaluating clinical and neuroimaging variables (cerebral cortex, CP, deep gray matter structures, and demyelinating lesions). Most patients were girls (80%), with a mean age of 15.3 years. POMS individuals had a higher CP volume (p = 0.012) and lower thalamic volume (p = 0.038) compared to HC. Team climate and attributes of primary healthcare (PHC) are key elements for collaborative practice. Few researchers have explored the relationship between team climate and patients' perceptions of PHC. This study aimed to assess the association between team climate and patients' perceptions of primary healthcare attributes. A quantitative approach was adopted. In Stage 1, Team climate was assessed using Team Climate Inventory in 118 Family Health Strategy (FHS) teams at a PHC setting. In Stage 2, Patients' perceptions of PHC attributes were assessed using the Primary Care Assessment Tool (PCATool) in a sample of 844 patients enrolled in teams studied in Stage 1. Cluster analysis was used to identify team climate groups. The analysis used multilevel linear regression models. Patients assigned to teams with the highest team climate scores had the highest PHC attributes scores. Patients who reported affiliation at the team level had the highest PCATool scores overall. They also scored higher on the attributes of comprehensiveness and coordinated care compared to patients with affiliation to the health unit. Objective: Verify the effect of non-periodized and linear periodized combined training on body image perception and body dissatisfaction in adults with obesity. Design: A randomized clinical trial on the effect of two types of combined training periodization was carried out on people with grade I and II obesity. Setting: Participants were allocated into three groups: non-periodized periodization group, linear periodization group, and control group, with 23 participants in each. Subjects: Adults with obesity, with a body mass index between 30 kg/m² and 40 kg/m². Interventions: The intervention lasted 16 weeks (separated into three mesocycles of 4 weeks and 1 week of familiarization), in 3 weekly sessions of 1 hour each, composed of aerobic (30 min) and muscle strength exercises (six exercises) in the same session. The group with non-periodized model maintained uniform intensity, volume, and workload throughout the mesocycles. The group with the linear periodization model started with low initial intensity, subsequently introducing a gradual increase of intensity in the mesocycles. Main measures: Body image perception (current and ideal silhouette) and body dissatisfaction were assessed using the Stunkard silhouette scale. Results: The perception of the current silhouette increased only in the control group (Δ = 1.16; p = 0.04). There was a significant reduction in the ideal silhouette over time (p = 0.001), especially in non-periodized group (Δ = −1.26). Body dissatisfaction increased significantly only over time (p = 0.001), especially for control group (Δ = 1.47). Conclusions: Regardless of periodization, combined training effectively maintained the perception of the current silhouette and reduced the ideal silhouette in adults with obesity. Objective: To investigate the effect of diadynamic currents administered prior to exercises on pain and disability in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Design: A randomized-controlled trial. Setting: Special Rehabilitation Services in Taboão da Serra. Participants: Patients with bilateral knee osteoarthritis. Intervention: Participants were randomly allocated to Group I (diadynamic currents and exercises; n = 30, 60 knees) or Group II (exercises alone; n = 30, 60 knees) and were treated three times a week for 8 weeks. Main outcome measures: The primary outcome measures were change in knee pain evaluated by visual analog scale and disability Index Score (Lequesne). Secondary outcomes included change in mobility (Timed Up and Go test), range of motion (goniometer), muscle strength (dynamometer), a composite score for pain and disability (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis questionnaire), and a drug diary to measure consumption of rescue pain medication (paracetamol). All measurements were collected at baseline, 8 weeks, and 6 months from baseline (follow-up). Results: There were 60 participants with a mean (SD) age of 63.40 (8.20) years. Between-group differences in the follow-up (8 weeks and 6 months) were observed for pain at rest, pain during activities of daily living and disability. There was improvement in Group I that was maintained for the three variables 6 months after treatment. Mean difference for pain at rest was −3.08 points (95% confidence interval −4.13; −2.02), p < 0.01 with an effect size of 1.4; mean difference for pain during activities of daily living was −2.40 points (95% confidence interval −3.34; −1.45), p < 0.01 with an effect size of 1.24; and mean difference for disability was −4.08 points (95% confidence interval −5.89; −2.26), p < 0.01 with an effect size of 1.04. Conclusion: Patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis receiving 8 weeks of treatment with diadynamic currents as an adjunct to a program of exercises had significantly greater improvements in pain and disability than those receiving exercises alone. This study aims to investigate the fear or failure (FoF) in Brazilian runners of both sex, performance levels and age categories, as well as to verify the relationship between FoF and socioeconomic status (SES). Sample size as composed by 916. Age, sex, body height, body weight, SES, and running pace were self-reported. The Multidimensional Questionnaire of FoF was applied in an online platform. Running pace, and SES were categorized and processed through multivariate analysis and Spearman correlations, with the p-value set at 0.05. Female runners with better performance (2.13 ± 0.74) and younger (2.16 ± 0.80), as a well as male runners with worse performance (2.04 ± 0.69) and older (2.04 ± 0.89) presented the highest values of FoF. Among women, SES was negatively associated with FoF (r = −0.144; p = 0.006), while a positive association between running pace and SES was observed among men (r = 0.290; p < 0.001). The aim of this study was to investigate the quality of life (QOL) and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in people living with HIV (PLWH) in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. A cross-sectional study with a sample of 385 patients followed-up on an outpatient basis. Interviews were conducted using the Sociodemographic, Epidemiological and Clinical Form, the World Health Organization's Quality of Life in PLWH Instrument, the Assessment of Adherence to Antiretroviral Treatment Questionnaire and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Descriptive statistics and univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed. The odds ratio and confidence interval were calculated, considering P < 0.05 as statistically significant. Of the 385 PLWH, 134 (34.8%) had unsatisfactory QOL which was associated with unemployment (P = 0.0037), monthly income less than the minimum wage (P < 0.0001), sleep disorders (P = 0.0039) and not doing regular exercise (P = 0.0032). Inadequate adherence to ART occurred in 24 patients (6.23%) and was associated with detectable viral load (P = 0.0001) and unsatisfactory QOL (P = 0.0033). QOL was more unsatisfactory for those unemployed and with low income, sleep disorders and sedentary lifestyle. Individual satisfaction is associated with increased retention in HIV/AIDS care services and adherence to treatment. This study assessed factors associated with individual satisfaction at the initiation of antiretroviral therapy and compared the proportions of satisfaction at the initiation of antiretroviral therapy and after three months of follow-up. Face-to-face interviews were carried out among 398 individuals of three HIV/ AIDS healthcare services in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Variables included sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, perception about healthcare services, and domains of quality of life. Individuals that rated the quality of healthcare services as good or very good were classified as satisfied. A logistic regression analysis of the association between independent variables and individual satisfaction was performed. The proportion of individual satisfaction with healthcare services was 95.5% at the initiation of antiretroviral therapy and 96.7% after three months and these changes were not statistically significant (p = 0.472). The physical domain of quality of life was found to be associated with satisfaction at the initiation of antiretroviral therapy (OR = 1.38; CI = 1.11–1.71; p = 0.003). Training and supervision of health professionals for addressing the needs of individuals with lower levels of physical domain of quality of life may improve satisfaction with HIV/ AIDS care. Objectives: This study aimed to compare three-dimensional kinematic of the trunk, pelvis, hip, and knee during the single-leg squat and hip torque in individuals with and without isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PFOA). Patients and methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated trunk, pelvis, hip, and knee kinematics at 30°, 45°, and 60° knee flexion during the single-leg squat using the Vicon motion capture and analysis system, the Nexus System 2.1.1, and 3D Motion Monitor software. Sixteen individuals (8 males, 8 females; mean age: 49.3±6.2 years; range 40 to 61 years) participated in the study, of which eight were PFOA patients and eight were healthy controls. Isometric hip abductor, extensor, and external rotator torques were evaluated using a handheld dynamometer. Results: The PFOA group exhibited greater hip adduction at 30° (p=0.008), 45° (p=0.005), and 60° (p=0.008) knee flexion in the descending phase of the single-leg squat, as well as at 60° (p=0.009) and 45° (p=0.03) knee flexion in the ascending phase. No significant differences were found between groups for other kinematic variables (p>0.05). The PFOA group exhibited lower isometric hip abductor (p=0.02), extensor (p<0.001), and external rotator (p=0.007) torques. Conclusion: Individuals with PFOA exhibited excessive hip adduction that could increase stress on the lateral patellofemoral joint at 30°, 45°, and 60° knee flexion during the single-leg squat and exhibited weakness of the hip abductors, extensors, and external rotators in comparison to healthy controls. The objective of this study was to identify Brazil's most critical garbage codes (GCs) reclassified to Chagas disease (ChD) in mortality data and their proportions. We also estimated the potential impact of misclassification on the number of deaths attributed to ChD. Population-based descriptive study. We used the Mortality Information System (SIM; in Portuguese) data before and after routine GC investigation in 2015–2019 to evaluate ChD deaths detected among them. We identified priority GCs, which contributed more than 0.1 % to the percentage of total ChD deaths registered. Spearman's correlation was used to evaluate the association between the reclassification of priority GCs and ChD prevalence. Then, we applied the GC correction factors to estimate the number of deaths attributed to ChD. 22,154 deaths were reported as ChD in the study period. Among them, 1004 deaths originally listed as priority GCs were deaths reclassified to ChD after an investigation in the SIM final database. Unspecific cardiomyopathy (10.2 %), unspecific heart diseases (4.7 %), and heart failure (2.8 %) were GCs with the highest proportions of reclassification to ChD in Brazil. Higher ChD prevalence at the state level was associated with a higher proportion of GC deaths reclassified as ChD. When applying correction factors identified after investigation, we estimated an increase of 26.4 % in registered ChD deaths, mostly in states with higher endemicity. GCs might conceal deaths due to ChD, particularly in Brazil's states with higher endemicity. Smartphone addiction and its excessive use could cause musculoskeletal symptoms such neck and upper limb pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between smartphone use and musculoskeletal pain in the upper limbs and neck, as well as to observe the relationship in between smartphone addiction and musculoskeletal pain and upper limb function in university students. It is a cross-sectional, analytical study. A total of 165 university students participated in the research. Each student had their own smartphone. The students answered a structured questionnaire about pain in the upper limbs and neck; the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI) and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire (DASH). Prevalence of neck and upper limb pain was 34.0%. Smartphone addiction and its use to play games and listen to music were risk factors to upper limb pain. Moreover, the smartphone addiction and age proved to be risk factors to neck pain. There was correlation between DASH and SPAI scores, and there was association between DASH score and neck and upper limb pain. Being of the female sex and smartphone addiction predicted the risk of incapacity development. We found association between neck and upper limb pain with smartphone addiction. Functional incapacity was associated to neck and upper limb pain. It was predicted by smartphone addiction and being of the female sex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the chronology of the eruption of primary mandibular central incisors in infants born preterm and with low weight (PLBW) and its association with weight/length ratio for gestational age (GA) at birth, individual characteristics and hospitalization at birth. Methods: A cohort of 46 infants was followed at a multidisciplinary reference center at a university hospital in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The inclusion criteria were infants born preterm with low/very low/extreme low birth weight and at least four months of age. Oral clinical examinations were carried out by a calibrated dentist for a total of eight months, with a one-month interval between each examination, to verify the chronology of eruption of the primary mandibular central incisors. Caregivers completed a sociodemographic and health questionnaire. Data on neonatal hospitalization were collected from medical records. Data were analyzed with the Kaplan-Meier method and log rank test, and bivariate analysis was done using the Mann-Whitney method and Kruskal-Wallis test (P<0.05). Results: The average age at eruption of primary lower central incisors was 11 months for both sexes. No association was found between tooth eruption and child hospitalization or individual characteristics (P>0.05). Infants large for gestational age had earlier tooth eruption (9.3±1.41 months) than infants small for gestational age (13.6±3.29 months; P<0.05). Conclusion: The most likely age for the eruption of the first primary teeth in infants born preterm and with low weight was 11 months, and there was no influence of individual characteristics and hospitalization at birth. Introduction: Transvenous temporary pacemaker (TvTP) implantation is a critical procedure often performed under time limitations, playing a crucial role in patient survival. However, the amount of training provided for resident cardiologists is variable, due to the availability of patients. Thus, the use of simulators for this cardiologic procedure could be used as training tools. Objective: The present study aimed to develop a simulator system for TvTP implantation based on electrograms, called ETTIS (Electrogram‐guided Transvenous Temporary‐pacemaker Implantation Simulator), and to evaluate its educational potential and cardiology residents' perceived learning efficacy as a training tool. Methodology: The development of the ETTIS involved three stages: (1) Adaptation of an anatomical mannequin; (2) Design and manufacture of electronic circuits and software capable of identifying the catheter contact site within the heart chambers and reproducing electrograms in both surfaces (mode‐on) and intracavitary (mode‐off); (3) To evaluate its educational potential, a modified Likert questionnaire was administered to nine cardiology experts. Additionally, to evaluate the perceived learning efficacy, another modified Likert questionnaire was given to six cardiology residents both before and after training with the ETTIS. Descriptive statistics with measures of position and dispersion were employed, and the weighted Kappa test was used for agreement analysis. Results: A high rate of acceptance (over 90%) was found among experts who evaluated the ETTIS. The cardiology residents showed significant self‐perceived learning gains, as evidenced by a lack of agreement between their responses to a questionnaire before and after training. Conclusion: The ETTIS is a promising tool for medical training, displaying both educational potential and efficacy. It has been shown to be effective in learning a variety of skills, including cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a heterogeneous metabolic disorder, characterized by hyperglycemia. It is a vast disease, involving different classifications, signs, symptoms, and treatment approaches, especially pharmacological. With digital technologies, social media, and the Internet have become disseminating agents of health information, which is often incomplete and incorrect. This study aimed to evaluate the information about pharmacological treatments for DM on Brazilian publications' Instagram social media platforms. Data from around 300 publications were collected for this study, which was conducted between 2021 and 2022. The characteristics, engagement, and quality of the information were analyzed using the Discern Questionnaire tool. Content evaluation was applied to categories not included in the quality tool. The type of information presented was classified as information disorder. Data were described using descriptive statistics, and inter-examiner agreement was calculated using the kappa coefficient. It was observed that the profiles publishing the information had an average of 6,263.3 followers. Type 2 DM was mentioned in 46.3% of the publications, and the most cited drugs were metformin (10.3%) and NPH insulin (7%). The quality of the information was classified as very poor in 68.8% of the publications. Regarding analysis of the content and type of information, indication, forms of administration, and non-pharmacological treatment presented misinformation and/or disinformation. It is, therefore, important to reinforce digital literacy, so that people can discern the content they are absorbing. Background. Inertial sensors within smartphones present a cost-effective and practical option for balance assessment. However, it is crucial to ensure that the extracted parameter is informative about postural control. In this study, we aimed to investigate the smartphone's ability to differentiate between various levels of difficulty in balance tasks and assess the reliability of these measurements. Methods. In two days, fifteen participants performed five static balance tasks. Acceleration data was collected from a smartphone during each balance task, and the root mean square value was computed from the magnitude of acceleration to obtain a representative measure of body oscillations. Results. ANOVA revealed a significant effect (p < 0.001), and subsequent pairwise comparisons indicated significant differences between tasks based on their difficulty levels. All measures exhibited good-to-excellent intraclass coefficient correlation (> 0.6), with only the semi-tandem task with eyes closed showing a coefficient of variation greater than 10%. Conclusions. These findings suggest that smartphones offer a sensitive and reliable means of assessing postural balance in static tasks of varying difficulty. We evaluated a school dental health education on the oral hygiene status in Quilombolas of the Brazilian Amazon. This is a prospective study. We included schoolchildren aged from 5 to 12 years and carried out an oral health education program for 4 months, totaling eight workshops held in the community school that provided physical structure and material resources for their development. We evaluated oral hygiene before and after the intervention period through clinical examination with the instrument Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S) is the combination of bacterial plaque indices. Before the intervention, all schoolchildren were instructed to use the plaque-revealing tablet after unsupervised toothbrushing and before any oral hygiene guidance given by the dentist who conducted the playful workshops on the premises of the school. Quantitative variables (OHI-S and age) with normal distribution (p > 0.05, Shapiro-Wilk test) are presented as means and standard deviations. Those with non-normal distribution (p < 0.05, Shapiro-Wilk test) are presented as medians and 25–75 percentiles. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used for within-group comparisons. We observed a significant difference in the mean scores of the oral hygiene index simplified (p < 0.001) before and after the intervention and 56.25% of the participants improved their oral hygiene condition. The results of this study provide evidence to support the importance of personalized educational initiatives to promote oral health in marginalized groups. However, it is important to recognize the limitations of the study, such as the relatively small sample size and the lack of a control group, which may require further investigation in future research. Background: Bushmeat is a resource exploited by thousands of people around the world, especially in tropical and neotropical regions, constituting an important source of protein and income. But what is known, so far, about the consumption and trade of wild vertebrate meat (hereinafter "bushmeat") in a megadiverse country like Brazil? This question was answered through a systematic survey of publications on the consumption and trade of wild vertebrate meat made in Brazil between 2011 and 2021. Methods: We selected 63 scientific articles available on "Google Scholar," "Science Direct," "Scopus," " Web of Science" and "Portal de Periódico da CAPES." The articles were categorized as: exclusive to (1) consumption or (2) bushmeat trade, totals of 54 and three articles, respectively; both (3) consumption and trade bushmeat, totaling six articles. We applied a nonparametric Spearman's correlation analysis to verify the association between the number of papers and the species richness of wild vertebrates cited for consumption by Brazilian state. Results: The results revealed that the publications were concentrated in the Northeast (36), North (26) and Southeast (1) regions, distributed across 16 states of the federation. These data reinforce the need for more researches in states and other regions of the country. Our research hypothesis was confirmed, since the richness of species cited for meat consumption was positively associated with the amount of work carried out by the states of the federation. We identified a total of 321 species of wild vertebrates mentioned in the categories involving the consumption of bushmeat. We had a greater bird species richness mentioned for consumption (170) to the detriment of mammals (107), reptiles (40) and amphibians (4). Furthermore, in the articles involving the bushmeat trade categories we had 57 species of vertebrates mentioned, with mammals being the most representative in terms of species richness (29), to the detriment of birds (20) and reptiles (8). These data reinforce that birds and mammals have been the groups most used both for consumption and trade in bushmeat in the country's regions, and it is necessary to mitigate the hunting exploitation of these groups. We recorded that socioeconomic, biological, environmental and sociocultural factors were the most cited predictors of the consumption and trade of bushmeat in the articles. We identified that the bushmeat trade chain is dynamic and ramified, made up of several actors, including specialized and diversified hunters, intermediaries, market sellers, market vendors, restaurant owners and final customers. Public markets and open-air fairs were the most cited places for buying and selling wild meat in commerce. Conclusions: In general, our results indicate that we have made significant advances in publications on the consumption and trade of bushmeat in Brazil over the last few years. However, we highlight the need to better understand the patterns of consumption and trade of bushmeat in different regions of the country, as well as the factors associated with the dynamics of the trade chain and uses of wildlife by local communities. We emphasized that a multidimensional understanding of hunting activities is important to face socio-ecological problems and improve the conservation of target species which have continually been explored for uses by populations in different regions of the world. Introduction: The collection of Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl. (castanha-da-Amazônia; Brazil nuts) seeds make up part of the everyday activities of the traditional populations that have inhabited all of the Amazon basin since remote times. Nonetheless, knowledge about these harvesting activities in native forest areas has not been well documented. The present study was designed to better understand the significance of this harvesting activity as well as the traditional ecological knowledge of the harvesters. Methods: Utilizamos entrevistas semiestruturadas para a coleta de dados com extrativistas de castanha, moradores de Caroebe, Roraima (n = 18) durante o período de março de 2021 a março de 2022. The data analysis was based on the frequency of responses to socio-economic questions and their knowledge about that plant species as well as why those interviewees chose that line of work. We also adopted the Spearman and Mann–Whitney non-parametric tests to correlate variables identified in the study, and selected sections of their depositions to highlight the traditional knowledge of the interviewees and their experiences as harvesters. Results: Constatamos que as razões para a escolha do trabalho com o extrativismo para todos os entrevistados é a necessidade de renda complementar, tradição familiar (55%), the sense of well-being provided by contact with the natural environment (25%), and a favorable disposition toward that type of work (11%). Harvesting involves collective work, and many of the interviewees had engaged in those efforts to help their families since their childhood or adolescence. The older harvesters cited more animal species that consumed the Brazil nuts (ρ = 0.60; p = 0.009) and perceived more and greater changes in the environment that were prejudicial to the Brazil nut trees (U = 9.50; p = 0.022). The interviewees who reported lower incomes cited more significant cultural changes and more suggestions concerning conservation activities. According to their statements, deforestation, and the burning and illegal cutting of native trees, including Brazil nut trees, have contributed to environmental change in the region and raised significant concerns about the future of harvesting activities. Conclusion: The activities of the "nut-crackers" represent to them more than just a simple source of income, as harvesting provides them with a connection to nature that promotes their well-being and cultural heritage. The nut harvesters have gained specific knowledge concerning both environmental and cultural changes. Those changes have mainly come about through the expansion of agricultural activities and the felling of native forests—which are the main threats to the future of Brazil nut extraction. Attributing value to the folk knowledge of those harvesters would strengthen the local economy, promote forest conservation, and help to better understand the impacts of anthropic activities on the forest and the harvesting of natural products. Background: The study aims to assess agreement between data obtained from interviews with postpartum women and their health records about labor and birth characteristics, newborn care, and reasons for cesarean birth. Methods: The present study analyzes the Birth in Brazil study dataset, a nationwide hospital‐based survey that included 23,894 postpartum women. Reliability was assessed using kappa coefficients and 95% confidence intervals. We also calculated the proportion of specific agreement: the observed proportion of positive agreement (Ppos) and the observed proportion of negative agreement (Pneg). Results: In terms of labor and birth characteristics, more significant discrepancies in prevalence were observed for fundal pressure (1.4%–42.6%), followed by amniotomy, and augmentation. All of these variables were reported more frequently by women. Reliability was nearly perfect only for mode of delivery (kappa 0.99–1.00, Ppos and Pneg >99.0%). Higher discrepancies in reasons for cesarean prevalence were observed for previous cesarean birth (CB) (3.9%–10.4%) and diabetes mellitus (0.5%–8.5%). Most kappa coefficients for CB reasons were moderate to substantial. Lower coefficients were seen for diabetes mellitus, induction failure, and prelabor rupture of membranes and Pneg was consistently higher than Ppos. Discussion: Our findings raise relevant questions about the quality of information shared with women during and after the process of care for labor and birth, as well as the information recorded in medical charts. Not having access to full information about their own health status at birth may impair women's health promotion behaviors or clear disclosure of risk factors in future interactions with the healthcare system. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs) and to determine whether differences regarding the employment status (standard and non-standard), according to gender, increased the probability of WRMDs. Cross-sectional study. Data from the 2019 National Health Survey (NHS) in Brazil were used. In total, 50,066 participants, both women and men, aged 18–65 years were included. Data were analysed for self-reported WRMDs. The binary logistic regression model, adjusting for possible covariables, was used to evaluate the association between working in the labour market and the occurrence of WRMDs. For covariates in the multivariate analysis, a P -value of <0.20 was considered in the univariate analysis. The variables with a P -value of <0.05 remained in the model. The odds ratio (OR), together with their confidence intervals at 95% (95% CI), were estimates both in the univariate and multivariate models. The prevalence of WRMDs was higher in women (4.2%) than men (1.9%). The likelihood of WRMDs was associated with the employment status only among men and proved to be lower for non-standard employment than standard employment (OR = 0.61; 95% CI = 0.43–0.87). Only among women, an increase in the likelihood of WRMDs associated with exposure to occupational noise was observed (OR = 1.77; 95% CI = 1.31–2.38) and a less favourable self-reported health (OR = 1.66; 95% CI = 1.08–2.54). Results showed higher change of WRMD for men and women associated with rheumatoid arthritis (men: OR = 3.94; 95% CI = 2.10–7.38; women: OR = 2.39; 95% CI = 1.68–3.39), depression (men: OR = 2.62; 95% CI = 1.54–4.45; women: OR = 2.39; 95% CI = 1.68–3.39) and occupational accidents (men: OR = 4.36; 95% CI = 2.34–8.14; women: OR = 2.20; 95% CI = 1.19–4.07). It is possible that the "double presence" that involves both the productive and reproductive spheres explains the higher prevalence of WRMDs among women Indicators that are sensitive to the effects of gender norms are necessary to understand the context of inequalities in the prevalence of WRMDs. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the cognitive performance of patients with favorable outcomes, determined by the Glasgow Outcome Scale, 1 yr after hospital discharge due to severe traumatic brain injury. Design: This was a prospective case-control study. From 163 consecutive adult patients with severe traumatic brain injury included in the study, 73 patients had a favorable outcome (Glasgow Outcome Scale score of 4 or 5) 1 yr after hospital discharge and were eligible for the cognitive evaluation, of which 28 completed the evaluations. The latter were compared with 44 healthy controls. Results: The average loss of cognitive performance among participants with traumatic brain injury varied between 13.35% and 43.49% compared with the control group. Between 21.4% and 32% of the patients performed below the 10th percentile on three language tests and two verbal memory tests, whereas 39% to 50% performed below this threshold on one language test and three memory tests. Longer hospital stay, older age, and lower education were the most important predictors of worse cognitive performance. Conclusion: One year after a severe traumatic brain injury, a significant proportion of Brazilian patients with the favorable outcome determined by Glasgow Outcome Scale still showed significant cognitive impairment in verbal memory and language domains. Aims: To identify changes in mental health status among nursing professionals in a Brazilian municipality during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Design: An observational and longitudinal study. Methods: Using the Patient Health Questionnaire‐9, the presence of depressive symptoms was evaluated among 690 nursing professionals in the city of Pelotas, Brazil, at two moments: June/July 2020 and June/July 2021. Results: 13.0% incidence of depressive symptoms was identified; as well as 12.2% remission; 24.1% persistence and 50.7% absence. Among the factors associated with the worst prognoses we can mention female gender, greater workload, feeling of overload, illness of family members or friends due to COVID‐19 and use of psychotropic drugs Conclusions: There was significant mobility in the diagnosis of depression among the professionals studied during the period analysed, with incidence of new cases of significant depression and greater than the number of remissions. In addition to sociodemographic aspects, traumatic experiences and exposure to continuous overload were associated with persistence and incidence of new cases. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: With the advent of the COVID‐19 pandemic, several studies have shown an increase in depressive symptoms among nursing professionals; however, understanding the long‐term effects of this scenario is still a challenge. This study investigates changes in the mental health status of nursing professionals working at different care levels, taking the prevalence of screening for depression as a proxy, during a period of a year during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Between both data collection moments, 2020 e 2021, there was a significant percentage of professionals with persistent depression, in addition to a significant proportion of incident cases that slightly exceeded the number of remissions and the factors associated with the worst prognoses were sociodemographic aspects such as gender and emotional stressors like illness of family members or close friends due to COVID‐19, in addition to those related to the organisation and support provided by the services, such as workload and feeling of overload. Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired weakness (ICUAW) on the functional independence of patients hospitalized for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) over 6 months after ICU discharge. Methods This was a prospective cohort study that included patients who were admitted to the ICU because of COVID-19 and who were monitored for 6 months after discharge from the ICU via telephone. Patients were evaluated at 3 times (30 days, 3 months, and 6 months after discharge from the ICU) for functional independence for personal care and mobility activities (Barthel Scale), independence for self-care (Katz Index), impact of COVID-19 on functional status (post–COVID-19 Functional Status Scale [PCFS]), and mobility level (ICU Mobility Scale). The existence of some degree of dependence was considered when the Barthel Scale score was <100 points, the Katz Index was ≥1, and the PCFS score was ≥1. A PCFS score of ≥3 indicated moderate or severe dependence. Patients with a Medical Research Council score of <48 at discharge from the ICU were diagnosed with ICUAW. Results Sixty-eight patients were included, with a mean age of 51 (SD = 13) years. The ICUAW rate at ICU discharge was 35%. In the evaluation with the PCFS, the values for the presence of any functional limitation at 30 days, 3 months, and 6 months after ICU discharge were 89.7%, 57.4%, and 38.2%, respectively. The rate of persistence of functional limitations after 6 months was higher in patients with ICUAW than in those without ICUAW (66.7% vs 22.8%; P  = .000); the same was true for moderate or severe limitations (20.8% vs 4.5%; P  = .035). Likewise, functional independence for personal care, mobility, and self-care activities was poorer in patients with ICUAW. Conclusions In patients surviving an ICU stay due to COVID-19, decreased functional independence persists even 6 months after discharge, and patients with ICUAW have worse outcomes. Propolis is a resinous substance collected by bees (Apis mellifera). It is used for its biological properties. This natural product is available as a safe therapeutic option. Herein, we report the antiviral effects of brown propolis extract from Mexico and green and red propolis extracts from Brazil, as well as their phenolic compounds (quercetin, caffeic acid, and rutin) in preventing infection of MRC-5 cells by HCoV-229E. Normal human fibroblast lung cells (MRC-5) were used to determine the cytotoxicity of the compounds. All samples studied showed antiviral activity. Green and brown propolis extracts, and quercetin exhibited the best EC50 values with values of 19.080, 11.240, and 77.208 µg/mL against HCoV-229E, respectively, and with TC50 of 62.19, 29.192, and 298 µg/mL on MRC-5 cells, respectively. These results are the first in vitro study of the effects of propolis on HCoV-229E and provide the basis for the development of natural formulations against other coronavirus strains. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the relationship between postpartum depression symptoms, anxiety, and stress during the postpartum period. A total of 101 women were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) within 14 days after delivery. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that paid work, tobacco use, and stress symptoms were significantly associated with a higher incidence of postpartum depression symptoms. These results underscore the importance of comprehensive prenatal care and effective postpartum follow-up to address maternal mental health and prevent adverse outcomes for both mothers and children. This article presents statistical analysis that verified the diversity of markets and marketing channels used by family farmers in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul/ Brazil, examining the occurrence of variables associated with the number of channels accessed. The non-probabilistic sample included 129 family farmers who produce fruits and vegetables in four municipalities in the Central Region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in the years 2019-2021. Nonparametric tests and bivariate statistical analysis were used, considering the significance level (≤) of 0.05. There was an average number of 2.4 channels in the Local and Conventional Markets, and 3.1 for the Local/Territorial and Public/Institutional Markets. However, a maximum of three channels is used in 75% of establishments. There was a low negative correlation between the mean age of the family farmers and the degree of diversification of the channels used to market the products and a positive correlation between infrastructure and diversificationof channels adopted and,family work and diversification. Objective: To investigate the perinatal outcomes in Brazilian, Peruvian, and Colombian women in a Brazilian reference maternity hospital based at Amazon triple border region. Method: A cross-sectional case study of data from 3242 live birth certificates issued at the Tabatinga public maternity hospital, in the countryside of Amazonas, in the period between January 2015 and December 2017. Maternal and perinatal independent variables were analysed based on central tendency and variability, and frequency distribution for categorical variables. The Pearson's Chi-Square test and univariate analyses were performed to estimate probability ratios (Odds Ratio-OR). Results: Significant differences were found in the education level in the three population groups, as well as in the number of previous pregnancies, antenatal consultations, month of initial prenatal care, and type of delivery. Brazilian pregnant women had more prenatal consultations, caesarean sections, and premature births. Peruvian and Colombian women started antenatal care later, and those with high-risk pregnancies tended to deliver in their home country. Conclusion for Practice: Our findings show some singularities in the care of women and infants in the Amazonian triple border region. The Brazilian Unified Health Care System performs an important role in the guarantee of free access to health services, and ensures comprehensive care for women and infants, promoting human rights in border regions regardless of nationality. Significance: The triple frontier between Brazil, Colombia, and Peru is a region that has specificities that defy assistance flows, normally based on predominantly urban and locally fixed populations. Analysis of the live birth certificate data completed after the births that took place in the only public maternity hospital in this region could help to quantify and understand the migratory phenomenon and its repercussions on the health of women and their infants. Studies show that maternal and child mortality indicators are sensitive to health conditions and can reveal various aspects of a territory, such as social inequalities, socioeconomic development, and quality of life. The syndemics theory seeks to understand the effect of multiple synergic problems in promoting poor health outcomes. To disentangle which and how syndemic conditions affect the quality of life (QoL) may be important to improve well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). This study evaluates the association between syndemic conditions and QoL among PLWHA. We performed a secondary analysis using data obtained between 2014 and 2017 among PLWHA under care in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The outcomes were the six QoL domains (physical, psychological, level of independence, social relationships, environmental, and spirituality) measured through the World Health Organization Quality of Life in HIV infection scale, abbreviated version (WHOQOL-HIV-BREF). The independent variables were demographic and clinical characteristics, syndemic conditions (binge drinking, compulsive sexual behavior, polysubstance use, intimate partner violence, and depression), and syndemics (two or more syndemic conditions simultaneously). Bivariate analysis (t-test and ANOVA) and linear regressions were performed for each quality-of-life domain. The analytical sample comprised 1530 participants, mostly male at birth (64%) and with median age of 43 years. The syndemic conditions most frequently observed were binge drinking (56%), IPV (13%), and depression (9%). Both individual syndemic conditions and syndemics were associated with worse QoL. In the multivariate analysis, positive screening for depression was associated with worse QoL in all domains. Polysubstance users presented worse QoL at social and environmental domains. Intimate partner violence was associated with worse QoL at environment domain while binge drinking was associated with worse scores in the physical domain. The presence of syndemics increased the likelihood of worse scores in the psychological, social, and environment domains. Our study expands the understanding of QoL in PLWHA, as it considers a holistic/integral, multifactorial, and synergistic approach to the determinants of QoL. Background and Purpose: The World Health Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) was developed to assess health and disability based on the biopsychosocial model. The WHODAS 2.0 has not been validated for Brazilians with chronic non‐specific low back pain (LBP). We aimed to evaluate the reliability, internal consistency, and construct validity of the Brazilian version of the WHODAS 2.0 in patients with chronic LBP. Methods: Methodological study. The Brazilian version of the WHODAS 2.0 was applied to 100 volunteers with chronic nonspecific LBP. Test‐retest reliability, internal consistency, and construct validity were assessed using the Spearman correlation test, Cronbach's alpha (α) coefficient, and Spearman's correlation test between WHODAS 2.0, the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Roland‐Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), and Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ), respectively. Results: WHODAS 2.0 showed satisfactory test‐retest reliability with a moderate correlation for total WHODAS 2.0 (r = 0.75, p < 0.05). Internal consistency was adequate for all domains and total score (α = 0.82–0.96). Regarding construct validity, WHODAS 2.0, ODI (r = 0.70, p < 0.05), and WHODAS 2.0 and RMDQ (r = 0.71, p < 0.05) had significant correlations. Total WHODAS 2.0 and FABQ‐Phys subscale scores correlated moderately (r = 0.66, p < 0.05). Discussion: The Brazilian WHODAS 2.0 was proved to be a valid and reliable tool for patients with chronic LBP. The item referring to sexual intercourse had 27% and 30% of the missing values during the test and retest stage, respectively and had a high percentage of missing data for work‐related questions (41% missing data) in the life activities domain; therefore, the data must be interpreted with caution. Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is a multifunctional and multisystem disorder. Several factors favor the development of PE, including obesity. Cytokines are also expressed in the placenta, predisposing to local alterations that favor the development of distinct pathological processes, including PE. This study aimed to evaluate the apelin and visfatin mRNA expression in the placental tissue of women with preeclampsia and overweight/obesity and correlates with maternal and fetal variables. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was performed with 60 pregnant women and their newborns. Clinical, anthropometric, and laboratory variables were collected. Placental tissue samples were obtained, and the apelin and visfatin mRNA expression levels were assessed by qRT-PCR. Results: The main findings evidenced lower levels of apelin expression in overweight/obese women, accompanied by a negative correlation with BMI and pre-pregnancy weight; a higher expression of apelin was also observed in women with late PE and no personal history of PE. For visfatin levels, higher expression levels were observed in women with late PE and term delivery. Furthermore, a positive correlation was observed between visfatin levels and fetal anthropometric parameters, such as weight, length, and head circumference. Conclusion: Apelin levels were less expressed in overweight/obese women. Apelin and visfatin levels were correlated/associated with maternal-fetal variables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to analyse hospitalisations for respiratory diseases in the Western Region of Bahia, Northeast Brazil, from 2010 to 2019, and to explore possible correlations with meteorological data. This descriptive, epidemiological, ecological study analysed data from 37 municipalities in the Western Bahia health macro-region, defined according to geographical, administrative, demographic, epidemiological, social and cultural criteria, and accounting for availability of health resources. Hospitalisation data for respiratory diseases, including total admissions and disease frequency, mean and prevalence, were obtained from DATASUS (Ministry of Health). The data were evaluated by sex, age group and city. Statistical tests, such as the Chi-squared test and analysis of variance, were used for data analysis. Meteorological data were compared using the t -test and Mann–Whitney test. Correlations between health indicators and weather data were assessed using the Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients. Over the investigated period, there were 536,195 hospitalisation records in the region, with respiratory diseases accounting for 17.1% of admissions. Notably, 40% of respiratory hospitalisations were among children aged 0–9 years. The most prevalent respiratory conditions were pneumonia and asthma, which together constituted 73% of all respiratory hospitalisations. A significant negative correlation was observed between respiratory diseases and rainfall (r = −0.70, P = 0.011). Pneumonia and asthma remain important causes of hospitalisation among children in the Western Bahia Region. The study findings suggest that respiratory diseases are influenced by rainfall, possibly due to increased atmospheric pollutants during time of low rainfall.
