The aim of this study was aimed to estimate the economic value of timber products from the forest stands that are potentially saved from wildfires after improving road standards. The study was implemented in the Alanya Forest Enterprise Directorate (FED) in the Mediterranean city of Antalya, Turkey. In the solution process, the possible increase in the accessible forest areas with improved forest road standards was investigated by using GIS-based network analysis methods. In the next step, the timber production in the forest areas potentially saved from the wildfire was calculated based on parameters such as site index, rotation period, and stand structure. Then, the economic value of timber product types was calculated using market prices. The results indicated that increasing the design speed on improved forest roads reduced the arrival time of firefighting teams to the forests, which consequently increased the accessible forest areas within the critical response time. It was found that the accessible forest areas within the critical response time increased from 47,231 hectares to 59,354 hectares when standards of the forest roads were improved. This saved 12,123 hectares of additional forest area from the wildfire in the Alanya FED. The cost of road improvement activities was estimated at US$ 2,286,998. It was calculated that the total timber products obtained from the forest area potentially saved was about 94,721 m3, and worth US$7,545,579 at market prices. Timber sales from the US National Forest System (NFS) can provide ecological and economic benefits. Unsold ("no-bid") offerings can result in delays, additional costs, and missed targets. We used mixed methods, including analysis of administrative data, synthesis of research, and semi-structured interviews to understand situations considered "no-bid" offerings by different stakeholders. We measured prevalence, identified causes, and generated a framework for communicating interlinkages. From 2007 to 2020, the volume not sold at first offering was 11.9% nationally. However, a substantial amount is sold subsequently, leaving 2.7% never sold. Regions with the highest percentage never sold include Alaska, Southwestern, and Pacific Southwest. A new conceptual framework developed from a literature review and interviews with NFS and industry employees identified proximate causes and underlying factors. Proximate causes include road construction, equipment requirements, and timber condition; whereas underlying factors include staffing, communication, and appraisal methods. The long‐term effects of intensive forest harvest on sensitive demographic stages of the American black bear (Ursus americanus) have been often overlooked. Much of Maine, USA, is covered in forests that are hospitable to bears and commercial timber harvest. To investigate the potential effects of differing intensities of disturbance on black bears, and on females with cubs particularly, we designed a large‐scale natural experiment with 197 motion‐sensitive camera sites dispersed over representative forest stands in northern and central Maine. Using multi‐state occupancy models, we distinguished the overall trends in space use by females with young versus adult bears without young. Forest disturbance at large spatial scales was positively associated with the probability of use for both demographic groups and the availability of hardwood trees was an additional important factor for habitat use by females with young. Our study illustrates the use of motion‐sensitive cameras to monitor and understand habitat use by distinct life‐history stages of animals living in human‐modified landscapes, and results indicate that managers can maintain black bear habitat in areas of active forest harvest by ensuring the availability of hardwood species. There has been considerable research on sustainable forest management due to its importance in ensuring the long-term health of the forests and its industries. Traceability is an important tool to ensure that the wood and wood-based products are produced in a legal, sustainable, and ethical manner. Therefore, various technologies were implemented within the supply chain to monitor and trace the wood with the aim of fulfilling the traceability objectives. Using a systematic literature review, this paper provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art on the technologies and procedures used in timber traceability and transportation management. It debates traceability tradition and advanced methods such as smart marking, QR (Quick Response) codes, DNA fingerprinting, smartphone apps, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), machine learning, and computer vision since these technologies enable the integrity of the supply chain by documenting the source of wood and following up on the wood in all the stages, beginning from the standing tree until the final customer. The paper also reviews the advancements in wood transportation management systems, including spatial databases, GPS (Global Positioning System), and fleet management systems, which ultimately lead to real-time monitoring and optimisation of transportation routes, leading to improved efficiency and minimal environmental impact. The review results acknowledge that financial constraints, infrastructure limitations, data management uncertainties, acceptance and compliance issues, and stakeholder commitment are still challenges to implementing traceability technology in the forestry sector. Moreover, this review not only highlights how traceability systems promote responsible forestry practices, ensure sustainable timber sourcing, and develop supply chain management, but also the advantages of utilising these technological advances at economic, social, and environmental levels. White oak is a major commercial tree species and an important timber resource in Kentucky. However, current forest inventory trends from the Central Hardwood Forest Region (CHFR) reveal a sustainability threat from declining white oak regeneration and recruitment leading to a disproportionate inventory structure. Using Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data together with the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), we performed a base run analysis of projected inventory levels of white oak sawlogs to better understand whether the inventory level is sustainable to support the current harvest level of white oak in the future. The projections were further examined by tree grades to provide a general outlook on the quality of white oak timber growing in Kentucky's forests in posterity. By doing so, we generated results that indicate that projected inventory levels of white oak sawlogs cannot be considered sustainable to support current harvest levels from 2058 onwards. In addition, the long-term trends in inventory levels of high-quality white oak sawlogs would be continuously declining whereas that of low-quality sawlogs would be steadily increasing. On the brink of these significant inventory shifts, our study calls for proactive forest management approaches to stabilize the white oak timber resource supply in Kentucky and beyond. Demand for high-quality white oak sawlogs in Kentucky has been increasing for decades. Concurrently, Kentucky is witnessing ecological shifts in the historically white oak-dominated forests, mirroring the structural changes in oak forests in the eastern US. This demand–supply dissonance presents a growing concern among stakeholders on the sustainability of white oak and its associated economic implications. In this context, the objective of this study was to assess the potential economic impacts of the projected white oak timber supply following an overall increased supply of white oak sawlogs but reduced supply of high-quality white oak sawlogs in Kentucky. Results generated from a dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model indicate a cumulative present-value GDP reduction of USD 3.66 billion, a USD 0.71 billion decline in consumer welfare, and other sectoral contractions over 40 years (2018–2058). These results can be used to advocate for more proactive forest management practices to stabilize a sustained supply of high-quality white oak timber in Kentucky and beyond. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Given that CLT is a relatively recent innovation, there is a notable scarcity of market research in Finland. Presently, there is a limited body of literature that provides a thorough comprehension of the present state, varied applications, and anticipated future developments concerning the use of CLT within the Finnish construction sector. The limited availability of research data underscores the need for more extensive studies to fill this knowledge gap and provide a more nuanced insight into the evolving landscape of CLT adoption within the Finnish construction industry. This article aims to fill this gap through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 15 Finnish experts. Key findings highlighted that (1) the hierarchical order of familiarity with CLT among construction professionals in Finland, ranging from highest to lowest, was identified as follows: architects, engineers, developers, builders, and contractors; (2) a pronounced necessity exists for heightened expertise and training within the realm of CLT; (3) CLT was considered a promising option in endeavors aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate crises; (4) CLT showcased adaptability to environments marked by highly fluctuating climatic conditions, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive approach, including proactive maintenance strategies; (5) Finland adopted commendable and forward-looking sustainable practices in forest management; (6) the adaptability of CLT across a wide range of building categories; (7) the perceived vulnerabilities in CLT construction primarily included a lack of cost-competitiveness, insufficient sound insulation, and inadequate production volume; and (8) key future market prospects encompassed the versatility of CLT, increasing demand propelled by environmental considerations, and collaborative advancements in hybrid construction techniques. A recent study titled "MADERA: A standardized Pan‐Amazonian dataset for tropical timber species" has compiled a comprehensive dataset of timber species found in the Amazon region. The dataset includes information on 1,112 unique species from 337 genera and 72 families, with details on population, conservation status, and trade status. The researchers hope that this information will contribute to sustainable forest management and scientific research in the Amazonian region. As organisations and economic markets continually evolve, it becomes essential to improve risk management skills on an ongoing basis. In this respect, it is particularly important to make practical use of all the tools available to identify and quantify risks. As with most entities, the most important tool for forest management is the timber selling price risk (TSPR). Economic practice shows that global markets experience very high volatility in this respect. The awareness of some popular techniques to understand the nature of individual risks by properly identifying their impact on the functioning of the organisation is currently increasing in importance. One of these techniques is the Value at Risk (VaR) method, which was used in this study to measure TSPR in 38 timber-selling economic entities. The aim of this article is to examine the concept of TSPR estimation using the VaR method adopted in the methodology by implementing the main VaR assumptions in the Polish forest economy in order to improve the methods of quantification of market risk in forestry, taking into account the impact of the sales volume and trade pattern of wood species on TSPR. The article demonstrates that the application of the VaR method can be an auxiliary tool in the TSPR management process. It is noted that this method can be a basic tool to ascertain the degree of exposure to risk and that the structure of commercial classes of timber is important. Using VaR, the relationship between the level of generated revenue and TSPR as well as between the assortment structure and TSPR was identified and discussed. We modelled the potential impact of intensification of plantation management and thinning, on timber supply of an ∼500 000 ha forest in Alberta, Canada over a 200-year planning horizon. Pre-commercial and commercial thinning were applied to a portion of the better sites, which allowed shortening of the time to merchantability and earlier harvest than unthinned stands; less than 25% of the forest was thinned over the course of the plan. The sustainable harvest rate, represented here as the annual allowable cut (AAC), increased by ∼14% above baseline, when thinning was applied. Similarly, there was a 20.7% increase in AAC projected with the relaxation of even flow rules if thinning was also applied. Finally, thinning offset the expected decline in AAC after a 20-year surge in cutting of mature pine, designed to slow an epidemic of mountain pine beetle. In terms of wood supply, the volume extracted at thinning was <2% of annual supply but volume from final harvest from thinned stands, at times, surpassed that of unthinned stands of the forest. Individual tree size from thinned stands was ∼twice that from unthinned areas in the second part of the planning period, offsetting the expected decline in piece size after the era of harvest of natural forests. As demand for wood products increases in step with global population growth, balancing the potentially competing values of biodiversity conservation, carbon storage and timber production is a major challenge. Land sparing involves conserving forest while growing timber in intensively managed areas. On the other hand, land sharing utilizes ecological forestry approaches, but with a larger management footprint due to lower yields. While the sparing‐sharing framework has been widely tested and debated in agricultural settings to balance competing values, such land‐allocation strategies have been rarely studied in forestry.We examined whether a sparing, sharing or Triad strategy best achieves multiple forest objectives simultaneously. In Triad, management units (stands) in forest landscapes are allocated to one of three treatments: reserve (where conservation is the sole objective), intensive (timber production is the sole objective) and ecological (both objectives are combined). To our knowledge, ours is the first Triad study from the temperate zone to quantify direct measures of biodiversity (e.g. species' abundance).Using a commonly utilized forest planning tool parameterized with empirical data, we modelled the capacity of a temperate rainforest to provide multiple ecosystem services (biodiversity, carbon storage, timber production and old‐growth forest structure) over 125 years based on 43 different allocation scenarios. We then quantified trade‐offs between scenarios, taking into account the landscape structure, and determined which strategies most consistently balanced ecosystem services.Sparing strategies were best when the services provided by both old‐growth and early seral (young) forests were prioritized, but at a cost to species associated with mid‐seral stages, which benefitted most from Triad and sharing strategies. Therefore, sparing provides the greatest net benefit, particularly given that old‐growth‐associated species and ecosystem services are currently of the greatest conservation concern.Synthesis and applications. We found that maximizing multiple elements of biodiversity and ecosystem services simultaneously with a single management strategy was elusive. The strategy that maximized each service and species varied greatly by both the service and the level of timber production. Contemporary forest management often requires meeting diverse ecological objectives including maintaining ecosystem function and promoting biodiversity through timber harvesting. Wildlife are essential in this process by providing ecological services that can facilitate forest resiliency in response to timber harvesting. However, the mechanisms driving species' responses remain ambiguous. The goal of this study was to assess mechanisms influencing eastern red-backed salamander (RBS; Plethodon cinereus) response to overstory cover removal. We evaluated two mitigation strategies for the RBS in response to overstory removal. We used a before-after-control-impact design to study how (1) retaining residual trees or (2) eliminating soil compaction affected RBS surface counts and body condition index (BCI) up to two-years post-treatment. Additionally, we assessed how surface counts of RBS were influenced by overstory tree cover. Surface counts of RBS were not strongly influenced by overstory removal when tree residuals were retained. Body condition index increased in treatments where harvest residuals were retained. In treatments where soil compaction was eliminated, surface counts and BCI were inversely related. Finally, surface counts from both mitigation strategies were not strongly influenced by overstory cover. Overall, both mitigation techniques appeared to ameliorate impacts of overstory removal on RBS. These results highlight the importance of understanding mechanisms driving species' responses to forest management. To reduce the perceived negative effects of overstory removal on RBS, incorporating these mitigation measures may contribute to the viability and stability of RBS populations. Forest policies aiming for a greener future and decarbonization require scientific support to help in decision making on resource economy and sustainability of forest operations. Timber skidding is one of the most prevalent options in wood extraction around the world. While its operational and environmental performance is affected by several factors, of which the extraction distance, removal intensity, and machine capabilities are of first importance, there are few studies on the subject in low-access and low-intensity removals. Based on a time study which accounted for production and fuel consumption, this work modeled and quantified productivity and fuel consumption for such operational conditions. Dependence of fuel and time consumption on relevant operational factors was modeled by least square stepwise ordinary regression techniques. Then, the developed models and summary statistics were used to simulate productivity and fuel consumption for a wide range of extraction distances. The main results indicate that, for removal intensities in the range of 7 to 15 m3/ha, productivity of skidding operations in mature broadleaved forests depended heavily on the extraction distance. Taking as a reference an extraction distance of 200 m, productivity halved at 800 m, and decreased to one fourth at 2000 m. For the same conditions, fuel consumption increased linearly, being doubled at 800 m and four times higher at 2000 m. Although the unit fuel consumption increased linearly as a function of extraction distance, its magnitude of increment was much lower. The results of this study indicate that shortening the extraction distances may be the best option in increasing the operational and environmental performance of skidding operations. This may be achieved by developing further the forest road network, which, in addition to the benefits for harvesting operations, could support a more sustainable forest management. Height-diameter models are fundamental for the inventory of timber, biomass and carbon. Located in the central region of Mexico, Abies religiosa is a conifer with high timber value that lacks models to estimate its height as a function of diameter. The objective of this study was to determine a local height-diameter model for A. religiosa trees under a mixed-effects model approach in the region of Tlaxco, Tlaxcala, Mexico. The first step consisted in evaluating the quality of fit of three growth models and one power model. We used height-diameter data of 1,539 trees measured in 197 circular plots of 1,000 m². The selected model was the Weibull, which was adjusted in a second step under the mixed-effects modelling approach. Our results showed that the most accurate predictive capacity was obtained when using the sub-basin covariate as a clustering factor and the random effect in the parameter corresponding to the asymptote. Under this approach, the goodness of fit of the model was superior to the traditional one adjusted by nonlinear least square. Comparatively the gains in fit statistics R², RSME and AIC were of 12.19 %, 47.99 % and 8.46 %, respectively. Austria and Japan are considered to be forest-rich nations with a long forestry tradition. Currently, mutual consultations of forestry experts or visits of Japanese forestry experts to trade fairs such as Austrofoma are very popular. However, the starting point of this international exchange of forest knowledge has hardly been analysed in the discourse on forest history. Using the methodology of knowledge circulation and historical biographical research, this gap can be closed by attempting to identify and examine early milestones of the exchange. The exchange on forestry topics between Austria and Japan began as early as the 1860s and -70s. Important historical events such as the Imperial East Asia Expedition of 1868 and the World's Fair in Vienna in 1873 represent central milestones. These enabled the emergence of personal knowledge networks, starting with Wilhelm Exner and Gustav Marchet as well as Tsunetami Sano and Dohei Ôgata as key persons. Knowledge about forestry and forest science as well as the timber industry was mutually shared e.g. by visiting the forestry section of the world fair or attending forestry lectures. In Japan, this initially had an influence on the reform of the forest administration and the emergence of the first forestry associations until the beginning of the 1880s. After this, Austrian influence waned and the focus of Japan increasingly shifted to German forestry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Socio-economic status, technologies, and policies are key factors affecting forest management planning and forest ecosystem functions. This study applied shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) to a forest-management model framework. The potential timber yields and carbon sinks of spatially allocate alternatives were examined by quantifying their consequent changes at the regional tree species level in Chinese commercial forests (CFs) under the harvest and afforestation restrictions. The results indicate that the annual carbon sequestration rate of China's CFs over the next 50 years is estimated to be 152.0–162.5 Tg/a, which can offset approximately 5% of the anthropogenic CO2 emissions identified in 2019. Newly planted and regenerated forests can contribute more than 80% of this offset. The annual timber supply capacity is estimated to be 119.2–142.4 million m3/a with current policy interventions, which is not enough to meet the demand for China's timber market. Although most existing forests are managed as the primary source for forest goods and carbon service, the total commercial forest area changes are not as large as expected, resulting in only 2.0–10.6% differences. Our results also demonstrate that socioeconomic factors (e.g., social preference, carbon price, and forest logging and silvicultural practices) have a strong impact on carbon sinks but a minor impact on timber yields timber, except for improving harvesting and processing technologies. Establishing local long-term effective forest management systems and making afforestation and regeneration as a priority at the national level are suggested to comprehensively enhance the carbon sequestration and timber-supplying abilities of regional CFs. South Korea's successful reforestation efforts over the past 50 years have led to abundant forest resources. However, intensive reforestation during the 1970s and 1980s skewed the forests' age distribution towards forest stands aged 30 years or older, which results in an unbalanced distribution of age-class, requiring redistribution with harvest and effective regeneration plans to produce a sustained yield of timber as well as long term ecological benefits. During this conversion process, variations in timber production can occur, causing economic and ecological risks if excessive. To prevent these likely risks, permissible levels of increase and decrease in timber production can be restricted in the planning phase. In determining the appropriate variation rate in timber production, it is necessary to understand the impacts of variation in timber production on forest management. This study performed a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the economic and ecological impacts of constraining the period-to-period variation in timber production. A multi-objective linear programming (MOLP) forest management planning model was utilized to study forests in Mt. Gari, South Korea. Nine management alternatives were set with different levels of variation rate in timber production and further constraints. The total volume and net present value (NPV) of timber production, carbon storage, and water storage were analyzed for each alternative. As timber production variation rates decreased, the amount of timber production increased and forest carbon storage decreased; furthermore, NPV diminished as variation constraints strengthened. These differences were mainly caused by selection of regeneration species according to the constraint on variation in timber production. If the variation rate was strictly restricted, the area of timber species with short rotation age increased during conversion period, in order to reduce the gap of timber production between periods. At the latter part of planning horizon, the area of broad-leaved trees was enlarged as the burden of adjusting age-class structure reduced. The appropriate variation rate in timber production was determined to be 30%, based on considerations regarding the economic and ecological impact of the variation on the forest. Informed forest management requires reliable information. As the demand for finer scale estimates has increased, so has the cost for obtaining them from design-based ground sampling. Small area estimation (SAE) is an estimation technique that leverages ancillary information to augment design-based samples with the goal of increasing estimate precision without increasing ground-based sample intensities. This work presents three case studies spanning an industrial timberland ownership in the United States making use of SAE techniques in operational forest inventories. Case studies include an inventory of pre-thin plantation loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stands that had achieved crown closure in Alabama and Mississippi, a mixed pine–hardwood inventory in Alabama, and pre-thinning plantation Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) in Washington State. Using area-level SAE techniques, vegetation indices derived from 10 m Sentinel imagery were shown to reduce estimate uncertainty for common stand parameters. Additionally, when available, lidar and age were shown to offer additional improvements in estimate precision. The results of this study indicate the operational potential for using commonly available auxiliary data for producing forest parameter estimates with enhanced precision. The implications of these findings span multiple inventory objectives including, for example, commercial forest management, carbon accounting, and wildfire fuel assessments. Study Implications: Forest management requires reliable quantitative information for informed decisions. Data from ground-based forest inventories are commonly used to construct design-unbiased direct estimates. Due to logistical and cost constraints, samples often do not provide estimates with sufficient precision for making confident decisions. The statistical estimation procedure, small area estimation, is able to leverage linearly related ancillary data across areas of interest to form composite estimates that have less uncertainty than direct estimates alone. This study shows how combining ground-based data with auxiliary data from remote sensing and stand records produced more precise estimates of forest stand parameters in three distinct timber types spanning a large ownership in the United States. Results indicate that significant inventory efficiency and confidence can be realized by incorporating commonly available auxiliary data into the estimation of forest characteristics. Background Tree to tree interactions are important structuring mechanisms for forest community dynamics. Forest management takes advantage of competition effects on tree growth by removing or retaining trees to achieve management goals. Both competition and silviculture have, thus, a strong effect on density and distribution of tree related microhabitats which are key features for forest taxa at the stand scale. In particular, spatially-explicit data to understand patterns and mechanisms of tree-related microhabitats formation in forest stands are rare. To train and eventually improve decision-making capacities related to the integration of biodiversity aspects into forest management plot of one hectare, so called marteloscopes were established in the frame of the 'European Integrate Network'. In each plot, a set of data is collected at the individual tree level and stored in a database, the 'I+ repository'. The 'I+ repository' is a centralised online database which serves for maintaining the data of all marteloscope plots. A subset of this repository was made publicly available via the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, based on a data-sharing policy. Data included are tree location in plot, tree species, forest mensuration data (diameter at breast height [cm], tree height [m]), tree status (living or standing dead) and tree-related microhabitats. Further, a visual assessment of timber quality classes is performed in order to provide an estimate of the economic value (market price) for each tree. New information Currently 42,078 individual tree observations from 111 plots are made available via the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). As the network of plots continues to expand, so does the database of tree-related microhabitats. Therefore, the database will undergo a regular update. The current version has a temporal coverage from March 2014 to December 2020. The innovation of this unique dataset is that it is based on a commonly agreed catalogue of tree microhabitats as a field reference list when assessing assessment protocol. The establishment and sustainable management of forests, as well as timber production, become an increasingly important economic, environmental and social factors at a global and national scale. This is reflected in a series of documents both at international and European level and at national level, prepared and entered into force in recent years. More significant and defining for the Republic of Bulgaria are the following: European Green Pact, EU Forest Strategy for 2030 adopted on 16 July this year by the Council of the EU and the European Commission, the EU Biodiversity Strategy adopted in 2020 with a horizon of 2030, the National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change for 2030 and the Action Plan to it adopted in 2019, the Strategy for Biological Diversity in the Republic of Bulgaria, which is currently at the stage of coordination in the state authorities of the Republic of Bulgaria and others. These documents give priority to the so-called 'green economy'. The new EU Forest Strategy is in line with the European Green Deal and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and recognizes the central role of forests, forest managers and the entire forest-based value chain in achieving a sustainable and climate-friendly economy and in ensuring that all ecosystems are restored, sustainable and adequately protected. The present study analyses the round timber harvest in the country and the export / shipment of unprocessed timber and the respective trends of change for the period 2016 to 2020 are established, and the relevant conclusions are sought and made. Sustainable forest management in South-East Asia is challenged by smallholder livestock husbandry as farmers supplement insufficient on-farm forage with resources extracted from forests. This study assesses which determinants affect forest resource extraction by investigating teak forest usage by Indonesian cattle farmers. Based on a survey of 600 smallholders, we provide an overview of which resources are extracted, assess the factors influencing the likelihood of becoming a forest user group member and analyse characteristics that differ between members and non-members as well as the effect of membership on extraction frequency. Almost half of the farmers collect animal forage and heating material from teak forests or farm forestland. Two thirds of farmers who extract resources are not institutionally organized. Increasing distance to forests as well as diversity of extraction are found to be related with increased odds for highest extraction frequency. Group members differ from non-members mainly in the number of resources extracted as well as the usage of forest grass as a main forage source. Farmers are more likely to be group members with increasing farm size and poverty levels. Socio-economic benefits obtained from group membership should be redesigned so that more smallholders are motivated to join this governance scheme. Using timber from multifunctional forests for energy production can be economically viable and environmentally friendly when it is consistent with the principles of sustainable management; otherwise, it could be harmful from both an ecological and commercial point of view. The objective of this paper was to present the overall balance of timber biomass from felled trees in multifunctional forests and assess what kind and how much of this biomass can be used for energy purposes. The research material consisted of data on forest resources and the volume of timber removal in Polish State Forests in 2016–2020. The biomass of branches and stumps of felled trees was determined using biomass expansion factors (BEFs). The results obtained in this study indicated that industrial timber, energy wood, and biomass left in the forest as a source of deadwood are 67%, 20%, and 13% of the total woody biomass, respectively. The Polish State Forest's potential for energy wood is estimated at 6.18 million tonnes of biomass annually. Total available energy produced from woody biomass amounted to 104.8 PJ y−1. Indigenous people, who are often economically, socially, and culturally dependent on forests, represent important stakeholders in forest management. Due to high costs, indigenous communities partner with external institutions to harvest timber, often resulting in forest degradation within their territories, internal and external conflicts, and disinterest in starting new timber management projects. Using a standardized methodology to investigate the outcomes of previous community forestry projects presents an opportunity to better understand and potentially resolve these issues. Hence, we conducted research in the Sinchi Roca I native community in Peru. Our objectives were (1) to describe the process of timber harvest, (2) to analyze gender differences in local perceptions of timber management, and (3) to evaluate the outcomes of the timber activity, applying socioeconomic criteria and indicators. Data collection included in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and intra-household surveys. We found that locals partnered with a company for timber harvesting, which led to a sanction from the Peruvian government. Timber harvesting was therefore negatively perceived in the community, with 83.75% of survey respondents dissatisfied with the activity and 88.75% reporting internal and external conflicts due to the presence of the company. Moreover, women did not have a major role in timber harvesting, nor did they actively participate in planning meetings. Results suggest that improving future timber management projects in indigenous communities requires that projects be adapted to local realities and encourage local participation, including training for locals in governance, administration of documents, and negotiations with external stakeholders. The value of non‐commodity ecosystem services provided by forests is widely recognized, but intensive forest management practices are increasing, with uncertain consequences for a multitude of these services. Quantitative relationships among biodiversity conservation, timber production and other ecosystem services remain poorly understood, especially during the early‐successional period of intensively managed forestlands.We manipulated management intensity in regenerating forest plantations to test the prediction that treatments aimed at maximizing timber production decrease biodiversity conservation and non‐timber services. We measured species richness of 3 taxonomic groups and 13 proxies for provisioning, cultural and regulating services within stands randomly assigned to one of the three herbicide application intensities or an untreated control.Herbicides increased allocation of net primary production to crop trees, increasing projected timber volume and revenues at 40‐ and 60‐year harvest ages. Commonly used herbicide prescriptions reduced culturally valued plants by 71%, wild‐ungulate forage by 41%, avian richness by 20% and pollinator floral resources by 42%, the latter being associated with 38% fewer pollinator species. However, agriculturally valued bumblebees, pollination of blueberries, avian‐mediated arthropod control, wild ungulate observations and regulation services tied to forest productivity appeared unaffected by increasing management intensity and timber production.Species richness and flora‐provided services in young forest plantations exhibited strong trade‐offs with projected timber production, whereas post‐treatment vegetation regeneration and site‐level variation likely maintained a range of other services. Although vegetation recovery is important for supporting wildlife and some ecosystem services on industrial forestlands, it is unlikely that any single prescription can optimize both timber and non‐timber benefits to society across managed forest landscapes. Instead, producing different services in discrete portions of the landscape may be necessary.Synthesis and applications. We tested the effects of intensive forest management via herbicides on ecosystem services and found that biodiversity responses and services from early‐successional vegetation trade‐off against timber production. A number of services appeared to be compatible with timber production, although no single prescription optimized the full range of services. Stand‐level biodiversity conservation and a variety of services could potentially be provided by treatment skips and less‐intensive management on productive sites, although it is unlikely that all services can be optimized without landscape‐level planning. Although A. angustifolia is currently economically unimportant, the worldwide trend of conservation through the sustainable use of natural resources together with recent results of genetic breeding are delivering promising perspectives for a new wave of plantations. This study aimed to determine optimal pruning intensity by evaluating the diameter and height growth of A. angustifolia trees. Pruning quality in terms of occlusion and defect-core size were also investigated. At the age of 6 years, the pruning experiment was started by conducting six different pruning intensities, named after the number of whorls left after pruning (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8), as well as unpruned (U) trees as a control. From the results obtained in the present study, it was concluded that pruning intensity had a significant effect on the growth of young A. angustifolia trees. Diameter was more affected than height growth. Pruning A. angustifolia trees for knotty-free timber production must be conducted keeping 8 whorls after the intervention if no negative effect in current annual increment in diameter is to be observed. A defect core of 15 cm seems to be a feasible target for the species regarding optimal pruning intensity to avoid losses in diameter growth. This study provides a regional model framework to evaluate timber supply and carbon impacts of environmental and socioeconomic change in Maine, USA. We construct alternative future narratives that vary economic growth, forest management, and environmental policies and then conduct econometric analysis to project forest area and timber supply over the next 80 years under five shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs). Forest area changes from 2020-2100 ranged from a 11% decline in SSP3 (regional rivalry) to 0.2% for SSP1 (sustainability). Maine's forest carbon stocks and timber supply can still mutually increase before 2070 for all pathways, largely due to improvements in forest management, growth, and yield. Overall timber supply is projected to increase by 0.21-0.51% per annum, with supply expanding faster for pathways with higher timber price growth. Total forest carbon stocks (ecosystem and products) are projected to increase 0.40-0.64%/yr for similar reasons. Sensitivity analysis indicated the key drivers most likely to affect Maine's forest sector are timber prices, population change, personal income, land value, and conservation land area. We consider the problem of tactical forest management over a 5-year horizon with yearly periods. The main decisions made consider which harvest areas to cut in each period, the flow of timber from an area to each wood-processing mill to satisfy its annual demand, and which roads to build to access a harvest area not connected to the existing road network. The goal is to minimize the total transportation and road-building costs subject to budget limitations. To explore the benefits of economies of scale (EOS) in road construction, we incorporated this notion in the proposed model. Then, the efficiency of the obtained solution is compared with the model without EOS. The proposed model is a mixed-integer linear program, including several timber assortments and multiple periods. We validated the model for a realistic case in the context of the province of Quebec. The results demonstrate that consideration of EOS significantly reduces the total cost by about 5.3%. In the EOS solution, the road segments that are built every year are very concentrated in specific parts of the region, allowing a road-building company to take advantage of EOS. Moreover, this solution provides a much more efficient timber transportation plan. Key words: tactical forest management, integrated model, harvest planning, road building, economies of scale. Nous examinons le probleme de l'amenagement forestier tactique avec des periodes annuelles sur un horizon de 5 ans. Les principales decisions a prendre concernent les zones qui doivent etre coupees a chaque periode, la circulation du bois d'une zone vers chacune des usines de transformation pour satisfaire leur demande annuelle et les chemins a construire pour acceder a une zone de recolte non reliee au reseau existant de chemins. L'objectif consiste a minimiser le cout total du transport et de la construction des chemins qui est soumis a des restrictions budgetaires. Pour explorer les benefices des economies d'echelle (EE) dans la construction des chemins, nous avons incorpore cette notion dans le modele qui est propose. Ensuite, l'efficacite de la solution obtenue est comparee avec le modele sans EE. Le modele qui est propose est un modele de programmation lineaire partiellement en nombres entiers, qui inclut plusieurs assortiments de bois et de multiples periodes. Nous avons valide le modele avec un cas reel dans le contexte de la province de Quebec. Les resultats demontrent que le fait de tenir compte des EE reduit de facon significative le cout total d'environ 5,3%. Dans la solution avec les EE, les segments de chemin qui sont construits a chaque annee sont tres concentres dans des parties specifiques de la region, ce qui permet a l'entreprise qui construit les chemins de tirer profit des EE. Understanding how land‐management intensification shapes the relationships between biodiversity, yield, and economic benefit is critical for managing natural resources. Yet, manipulative experiments that test how herbicides affect these relationships are scarce, particularly in forest ecosystems where considerable time lags exist between harvest revenue and initial investments. We assessed these relationships by combining 7 yr of biodiversity surveys (>800 taxa) and forecasts of timber yield and economic return from a replicated, large‐scale experiment that manipulated herbicide application intensity in operational timber plantations. Herbicides reduced species richness across trophic groups (−18%), but responses by higher‐level trophic groups were more variable (0–38% reduction) than plant responses (−40%). Financial discounting, a conventional economic method to standardize past and future cash flows, strongly modified biodiversity–revenue relationships caused by management intensity. Despite a projected 28% timber yield gain with herbicides, biodiversity–revenue trade‐offs were muted when opportunity costs were high (i.e., economic discount rates ≥7%). Although herbicides can drive biodiversity–yield trade‐offs, under certain conditions, financial discounting provides opportunities to reconcile biodiversity conservation with revenue. Variations in both the behavior of wildlife and the scale at which the environment most influences the space use of wild animals (i.e., scale of effect) are critical, but often overlooked in habitat selection modeling. Ecologists have proposed that biological responses happening over longer time frames are influenced by environmental variables at larger spatial scales, but this has rarely been empirically tested. Here, we hypothesized that long‐term patterns of behavior (i.e., lasting multiple weeks to months) would be associated with larger scales of effect than more sporadic behaviors. We predicted site use by 43 radio‐telemetered timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) exhibiting four distinct, time‐varying behaviors (foraging, digestion, ecdysis, and gestation) using remotely sensed environmental variables related to forest structure and landscape topography. Among sites used by snakes, warmer temperatures and higher levels of forest disturbance were predictive of behaviors dependent on thermoregulation including gestation and ecdysis while more moderate temperatures and drier, more oak‐dominated sites were predictive of foraging. Long‐term behaviors were associated with larger spatial scales across most variables, supporting our hypothesis that the scale at which habitat selection occurs is linked to the temporal scale of relevant behaviors. Management recommendations based on single‐scale models of habitat use that do not account for fine‐scale variations in behavior may obscure the importance of potentially limiting habitat features needed for infrequent behaviors that are important for growth and reproduction of this and related species. Plantation forestry in southern Brazil demands additional timber species to a higher market differentiation by providing high quality timber and exploitation of market niches. Cupressus lusitanica has long been recognized for this purpose but, until now, it was not properly region-wide quantified in terms of growth and yield. The present study delivers the lacking quantitative approach, which may encourage the commercial use of the species. With this study it was aimed at collecting and processing quantitative data from all known C. lusitanica stands in southern Brazil. Inventories were carried out (60 ha, 6-39 years of age) in order to model the development of dominant height (h100), basal area, volume and dominant diameter (d100). Dominant height was the basis for site quality evaluation, delivering site index curves, which, together with the commercial volume of the stands, allowed yield modelling. A wide amplitude of dominant height growth was detected (10-30 m at 20 years), indicating a great site quality variation. At age of 20 years, commercial volumes of 110 and 620 m³ ha-1 were observed for site indexes of 14 and 26, respectively, equivalent to a maximum of 6-31 m³ ha-1 year-1 at ages between 16-18 years. Results demonstrated in a robust manner that C. lusitanica has a high potential for cultivation in southern Brazil. There has been limited study of songbird communities in different habitats of the lowland boreal forests of southern Yukon, including the mature forest valued for timber harvest. Our goal was to describe the songbird community during the breeding season in a mature (>80 years since wildfire) forest dominated by white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) adjacent to streams (n = 23) and wetlands (n = 15) compared with a nearby upland forest. Based on point count surveys, songbird communities were unique in the mature forest in the riparian forest edge position, including greater species richness and four significant riparian indicator species. Songbird communities were also unique in the forest adjacent to streams versus wetlands. We mapped species observations along 300 m transects from riparian to upland forests and identified nine species with greater abundance closer to the riparian forest edge. Many of these species are typically associated with riparian and wetland habitats for breeding. Most of the variability in the songbird community was explained by study site, likely related to high variability in forest type and amount of wetland and open water but also to unmeasured habitat characteristics. Our results increase the knowledge of songbird communities in this unique boreal region and suggest that riparian reserve zones in forest management may be useful for protecting songbird habitat. Les communautes d'oiseaux chanteurs ont ete peu etudiees dans les differents habitats de la foret boreale en milieux humides du sud du Yukon, incluant la foret mature appreciee pour la recolte de bois. Notre objectif consistait a decrire la communaute d'oiseaux chanteurs durant la periode de reproduction dans la foret mature (>80 ans apres feu) dominee par l'epinette blanche (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) adjacente a des cours d'eau (n = 23) et des milieux humides (n = 15) comparativement a la foret en milieu sec avoisinante. Sur la base de releves par denombrement ponctuel, les communautes d'oiseaux chanteurs etaient uniques en bordure riveraine des forets matures, incluant une plus grande richesse en especes et quatre especes indicatrices riveraines importantes. Les communautes d'oiseaux chanteurs etaient egalement uniques dans les forets adjacentes a un cours d'eau comparativement a un milieu humide. Nous avons cartographie les especes observees le long de transects de 300 m allant de la foret riveraine a la foret en milieu sec, et nous avons identifie neuf especes dont l'abondance etait plus elevee pres de la bordure riveraine de la foret. Plusieurs de ces especes sont typiquement associees aux habitats riverains et humides pour la reproduction. Le site a l'etude explique la majeure partie de la variabilite dans les communautes d'oiseaux chanteurs, vraisemblablement reliee a la grande variabilite du type de foret ainsi qu'a la quantite de milieux humides et de plans d'eau, mais aussi a des caracteristiques non mesurees de l'habitat. Nos resultats ameliorent notre connaissance des communautes d'oiseaux chanteurs dans cette region boreale unique et indiquent que l'inclusion de zones de reserve riveraines en amenagement forestier pourrait etre utile pour proteger l'habitat des oiseaux chanteurs. Forests are major sources of energy, timber and non-timber forest products, medicinal and aromatic plants, hydrological functions, biodiversity conservation, and also fundamental sources of revenue collection to the nation. Studies indicate that forests could significantly enhance economic growth and create employment opportunities for local communities under intensive management. This paper aims to predict the contribution of the forest sector to the national economy. The economic facets of forestry considered in this paper are revenue generated from timber, non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs), and protected areas. The ARIMA model was used to forecast the economic contribution of the forestry sector. The study found that the total revenue generated from the selling of timber and fuelwood (USD 50.19 million) was higher than the total revenue collected from protected areas (USD 37.58 million) and NTFPs/MAPs (USD 6.9 million) in the past 15 years. The model projected that the mean revenue for the timber and fuelwood sale will USD 3.5 million for the next ten years. Similarly, the mean revenue will be generated about USD 0.5 million and USD 6.2 million from NTFPs/MAPs and protected areas, respectively, for the next ten years. The study limits to take account the in-kind use of forest products such as timber, fodder, fuelwood, etc., as used by community people within a forest users' groups. Thus, practicing sustainable forest management, enabling policy documents, establishing forest-based industries, establishing forestry nurseries, conducting agroforestry practices, and tenure security could enhance the forestry sector's economic aspects. The aim of the article is to describe the issue of determining the characteristics and parameters of raw timber natural losses due to shrinkage at long-term storage, defining the theoretical basis for creating standards, and verify its finding by means of a case study in raw timber storing. This issue is very topical in forestry practice in the Czech Republic as well as in other countries. The lower and upper limits of the standards were calculated, and the proposed mean value was grouped according to woody plants that reflected the most frequent commercial usage with respect to subsequent processing. Subsequently, experimental verification was carried out on a representative sample of 2 209.99 m3 of raw timber of Norway spruce (Picea abies/L./H. Karst.) at selected forest administrations. Furthermore, the article addresses the related accounting and tax issues of the standards of natural losses of raw timber. Currently, no legislation mandates an entity to establish standards. We focused on modeling the profitability of the Cross Timbers (CT) forests with regards to the provision of ecosystem services, including timber production, carbon sequestration, and water yield. The Cross Timbers region spans from southern Kansas to central Oklahoma into Texas, encompassing marginally productive timberlands. We utilized a translog stochastic profit frontier approach to analyze forest plot data collected from the Forest Inventory Analysis program between 2008 and 2019. Our results indicated that, on average, the CT forests yield around 85% of the maximum profit. Only 12% of the forest plots generated positive revenues, and the average profit across all forest plots was -$484.51 ha−1. This means that even with a 15% reduction in profit losses, the majority of the forest plots in the CT region would still not be economically viable. Forest age, ownership, forest species, and site productivity were statistically significant impacts on profit efficiency. At the margin, we found that profit inefficiency increased under private ownership and with higher levels of site productivity. Furthermore, as forests age, profit efficiency was also reduced. Cut-and-remove has been the recommended suppression technique for the suppression of infestations of the southern pine beetle (SPB), Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), with cut-and-leave applied when conditions prevent removal of the felled pines. Changes in forest management practices and the timber industry, plus the expansion of SPB northward have led to an increased reliance on cut-and-leave in recent years. This change has resulted in an exploration of methods to improve the efficacy of cut-and-leave and the development of new tactics for suppressing SPB infestations. We compiled and presented a dataset for all timber species reported in the Amazon region from all nine South American Amazonian countries. This was based on official information from every country, as well as from two substantial scientific references. We verified the standard taxonomic names from each individual source, using the Taxonomic Name Resolution Service (TNRS) and considered all Amazonian tree species with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥10 cm. We also obtained estimates of the current population size for most species from a published approach based on data from 1900 tree inventory plots (1‐ha each) distributed across the Amazon region and part from the Amazon Tree Diversity Network (ATDN). We then identified the hyperdominant timber species. In addition, we overlapped our timber species list with data for species that are used for commercial purposes, according to the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) taxa assessment and Red List categories. Finally, we also included IUCN Red List categories based on combined deforestation, and climate change scenarios for these species. Our final Amazonian timber species dataset contains 1112 unique species records, which belong to 337 genera and 72 families from the lowland Amazonian rainforest, with associated information related to population, conservation, and trade status of each species. The authors of this research expect that the information provided will be useful to strengthen the public forestry policies of the Amazon countries, inform ecological studies, as well for forest management purposes. Branch development is related to the formation of wood knots and affects timber quality and future market value of plantations and native forests alike. This study provides a theoretical basis and reference for knot-free timber production in a Mytilaria laosensis plantation. The branch diameter, length, angle, status (alive or dead), azimuth, and branch height under 12 m were measured for 60 dominant or co-dominant trees in response to five planting density treatments (625, 833, 1111, 1667, and 2500 stems ha-1). With increasing planting density from 625 to 2500 stems ha-1, the mean branch diameter and branch length decreased by 7.09% and 8.70% respectively. Dead and live branch angle decreased by 10.54% and 9.66% respectively, while number of living branches increased by 31.67% from 625 to 2500 stems ha-1. Analyzing the spatial distribution using branch azimuth, we discovered that branches pointing north were more abundant and had larger diameter, larger branch length, and higher branch angle than branches pointing south. Branch diameter, length, and number were positively related to the relative branch height. Our results underline that increasing the planting density from 625 to 2500 stems ha-1 considerably affect branch growth. Thus, optimizing planting density when establishing Mytilaria laosensis plantations according to the forest management targets and future pruning can improve the timber quality and future value. The site index is the main estimate for evaluating the productivity of a forest, as it makes it easy to classify stands according to their productive potential. The objective of the present work was to determine the productivity of Pinus pseudostrobus var. oaxacana through the guide curve method, by adjusting different forest growth models. The Michailoff model statistically presented the best fit. However, the Prodan model better represents the growth pattern of Pinus pseudostrobus var. oaxacana, although statistically the models are similar, showing high significance in the relationship between growth in height and age.
