This paper will communicate the outcomes of a systematic quantitative literature review that investigated how extreme freshwater events (EFWE) such as floods, droughts, and heavy rainfall are framed in peer-reviewed academic literature focusing on Queensland, Australia, and Saskatchewan, Canada. From this exercise, patterns emerge revealing a predominately science-based hydrological cycle perspective of EFWE with little recognition of societal influences. We advocate for a reframing of EFWE research in these areas to acknowledge how human practices are interconnected with the intensity and frequency of EFWE. With the aim of developing a new easy-to-use method for rescuing flood-damaged paper, the effect of saltwater on the inhibition of fungal growth on paper was investigated. This procedure could be used instead of, or assisted by freeze drying. Cellulose-digesting Trichoderma reesei, three types of fungi representative of fungi growing on paper (T. reesei, Aspergillus terreus, and Aureobasidium pullulans) and various naturally airborne fungi were cultured on cellulosic materials in liquid media containing artificial seawater with different salt concentrations. The addition of salts successfully inhibited the growth of T reesei on microcrystalline cellulose at the concentration of 3.2% (m/m) or higher. The critical salt concentration, 3.2%, is within the general range of salt content in seawater. Other solutions of salts similar to sodium chloride also inhibited fungal growth. Although the observed growth-inhibiting effect was attributed to the high osmotic pressure of the salt solution, physiological effects depending on ion species used were also considered to be possible. The growth of all three types of fungi on copy paper was inhibited effectively when the salt concentration was increased. The growth of various fungi on pure cellulose, with enough oxygen supplied to pores, was completely inhibited (as assessed by visual examination) for 24 days at salt concentrations of 3.5% (m/m) or greater. The fact that the effect of saltwater on cellulosic materials was observed even under optimum medium conditions implies that fungi would be considerably inhibited on flood-damaged paper immersed in saltwater. This Conference Paper uses descriptive-qualitative research to describe and analyze factors forming community resilience affected by floods. The determination of informants is determined deliberately on flood-affected communities using criteria according to the purpose of the study. Primary data were obtained from in-depth observations and interviews, while secondary data were obtained from library sources and relevant data. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and documentation, while the data were analyzed using descriptive-qualitative analysis through several stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results of this study show that factors forming the resilience of the community to flood disasters are: (1) Value factors that have existed in the community for many years in the flooded land, namely mutual assistance; (2) Economic factors, finding alternative jobs or coping strategies by flood-affected communities; (3) Social factors, namely knowledge and skills to adapt to flood disasters through non-formal training and counselling on disaster and disaster mitigation from their experience or obtained through social media and mass media, such as television and radio; (4) Institutional factors, namely socialization of early flood warning, socialization of flood disaster mitigation, appeals for the prohibition of throwing garbage in rivers and essential food assistance before and during the occurrence of flood by the relevant government; and (5) Infrastructure factors that include the construction of facilities and infrastructure such as river dredging, drainage construction, and river cliff protection walls. Background: Iran is a disaster-prone country, which in recent years has been affected by heavy rainfall and consequent flooding. In March 26, 2019, heavy rainfall in northern parts of Iran resulted in flooding. The situation became more critical when central and western provinces were affected, finally causing significant damages in 25 provinces. The most affected areas were Golestan, and Khuzestan provinces with significant damages to their infrastructure, killing 76 people. Materials and Methods: This qualitative study aims to describe the findings and results of field visits in flood-hit provinces of Lorestan, Khuzestan and Golestan. All interviews were held with experts in late April 2019. Results: Golestan province was in recovery phase and Lorestan and Khuzestan provinces were in response phase. Due to the acute conditions of these two mentioned areas, it was not possible to visit all areas. In Lorestan Province Treatment and Emergency Situations; In Golestan Province Health Status and in Khuzestan Province Pre-hospital Care and Rescue Support were visited and evaluated. The field visited results indicate the presence of government forces and people in the field and provide comprehensive assistance to the flood-affected areas. Conclusion: There are numerous hazards each year, but few documented lessons are available for researchers. Due to the importance of applying lessons for community development it is imperative that special attention be paid to the discussion of emergency and disaster research and the presence of specialized researchers to record lessons learned. Although organizations make significant efforts during disasters, the specialized research force for recording these achievements in disasters remains neglected. The time of concentration (Tc) is the main hydrological parameter used to characterize the response of a given Hydrological Response Unit (HRU) to a precipitation event. Because of its importance, the determining Tc is an integral step in several studies involving runoff. Thus, this work presents an unprecedented review of the application of Tc in different lines of research involving water resources around the world. In this article, 1252 publications were listed, obtained from seven different databases, published by 2020, that presented the expressions "time of concentration," "runoff," and "watershed." The articles and conference papers obtained in this research were classified into 12 topics. The number of publications per topic and per country was measured and a cluster analysis was developed to verify the similarity of the distribution of topics per country. A case study describes the impact on a collection of the extreme floods in eastern Australia in February 2022, and the salvaging of the Lismore Regional Art Gallery art collection. Despite predetermined protocols and preparedness efforts, the gallery suffered unprecedented flooding, requiring coordinated solutions to support emergency recovery. The project included relocating and stabilising around 1400 artworks, divided between the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Coordinated collaboration with stakeholders was needed to determine which artworks were salvageable; initial assessments indicated 60%. However, after further assessment this was reduced to 40% of all artworks able to be returned to a condition suitable for storage and display. The paper focuses on the assessment criteria used to prioritise artworks for salvage and conservation: insurance value, condition post-flooding, the views of living artists on display of treated works, and sentimental and community importance. Accurate and timely risk assessment of short-term rainstorm-type flood disasters is very important for ecological environment protection and sustainable socio-economic development. Given the complexity and variability of different geographical environments and climate conditions, a single machine learning model may lead to overfitting issues in flood disaster assessment, limiting the generalization ability of such models. In order to overcome this challenge, this study proposed a short-term rainstorm flood disaster risk assessment framework under the integrated learning model, which is divided into two stages: The first stage uses microwave remote sensing images to extract flood coverage and establish disaster samples, and integrates multi-source heterogeneous data to build a flood disaster risk assessment index system. The second stage, under the constraints of Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), optimizes the integration of random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and logistic regression (LR) base models, and then the WRSL-Short-Term Flood Risk Assessment Model is established. The experimental results show that the Area Under Curve (AUC) accuracy of the WRSL-Short-Term Flood Risk Assessment Model is 89.27%, which is 0.95%, 1.77%, 2.07%, 1.86%, and 0.47% higher than RF, SVM, LR, XGBoost, and average weight RF-SVM-LR, respectively. The accuracy evaluation metrics for accuracy, Recall, and F1 Score have improved by 5.84%, 21.50%, and 11.06%, respectively. In this paper, WRSL-Short-Term Flood Risk Assessment Model is used to carry out the risk assessment of flood and waterlogging disasters in Henan Province, and ArcGIS is used to complete the short-term rainstorm city flood and waterlogging risk map. The research results will provide a scientific assessment basis for short-term rainstorm city flood disaster risk assessment and provide technical support for regional flood control and risk management. Increasingly severe flooding disasters have caused heavy casualties and property losses worldwide. Traditional Chinese villages that rarely experienced flooding disasters in the past have begun to frequently suffer from floods due to unreasonable reconstruction activities such as ground hardening and pond filling caused by urbanization. However, previous studies on hydrological changes and flood disasters caused by reconstruction activities in rural areas are scarce, especially lacking in quantitative analysis and research. In this study, the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is used to construct two hydrological models before and after the reconstruction of Hezhai Village, a traditional Chinese village. By simulating and comparing the changes in hydrological indicators of the two models, this study quantitatively analyzes how reconstruction activities caused changes in surface runoff and flooding disasters in Hezhai Village. The results show that the increase in the impervious ratio in the village has obvious effects on the total runoff, peak runoff, and runoff coefficient. And the reconstruction of ponds and canals has a notable impact on flooding. This study further delves into the logic of flooding at ponds and ordinary nodes and analyzes the specific reasons for flooding in Hezhai Village. In 2008, a flash flood of unprecedented occurrence happened in the state of Santa Catarina, in the southern region of Brazil. Over 600 thousand individuals were directly impacted by this event, and 97 deaths were registered on the most impacted region. This paper estimates the impact of this natural disaster on the poverty level. For this purpose, we use a difference-in-differences methodology that exploits the exogenous variation in geographic location and timing. The dataset used came from the Brazilian National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), and the timeline started at 2001 and ended in 2015. Our results indicate that the flood increased the likelihood of an individual falling below the extreme poverty line by 2 p.p. in 2009. This effect increases over the years, reaching approximately 6 p.p. in 2014. The effects are considered greater for non-whites and residents in rural areas. Moreover, the effects are considered greater the lower the level of education and the higher the home density. The robustness of estimates is checked to the existence of dynamic changes that might coincide with the occurrence of the flood. The significant rainfall in October 2018 in northern Iran caused devastating flooding that caused considerable economic losses and claimed at least nine lives. Following the flooding, several bridges have suffered different levels of damage. Immediately after the event, the authors conducted a field investigation to study the performance of RC bridges during the flood. This paper presents the failure modes of flood-affected bridges and provides reasons for every failure case. The results revealed that scour around foundations, pier tilting, flexural failure of piers, and superstructure unseating were the most significant failure modes observed. Pile-supported bridges performed notably better than those with shallow foundations. In addition, observations have revealed that structural integrity plays a crucial role in the general stability of bridges during flooding. Pier ductility is another significant parameter that affects the performance of bridges during flood events. Finally, fragility curves were developed based on the empirical data set provided from the post-flood status of the bridges in the affected region. The river flow velocity (Vs), maximum flow discharge (Qp), and Qp normalized to the 10-year average river discharge (Qm) were considered intensity measures of the fragility analysis. The correlation analyses revealed that despite Vs and Qp/Qm , the flow discharge was not an appropriate intensity measure for generating fragility curves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Frequent flooding seriously affects people's safety and economic construction, and assessing the inundation probability can help to strengthen the capacity of emergency management of floods. There are currently two general means of flood sensing: physical and social. Remote sensing data feature high reliability but are often unavailable in disasters caused by persistent heavy rainfall. Social media is characterized by high timeliness and a large data volume but has high redundancy and low reliability. The existing studies have primarily relied on physical sensing data and have not fully exploited the potential of social media data. This paper combines traditional physical sensing data with social media and proposes an integrated physical and social sensing (IPS) method to estimate the probability distribution of flood inundation. Taking the "7·20" Henan rainstorm in 2021 and the study area of Xinxiang, China, as a case study, more than 60,000 messages and 1900 images about this occurrence were acquired from the Weibo platform. Taking filtered water depth points with their geographic location and water depth information as the main input, the inverse distance attenuation function was used to calculate the inundation potential layer of the whole image. Then, the Gaussian kernel was used to weight the physical sensing data based on each water depth point, and finally, the submergence probability layer of the whole image was enhanced. In the validation of the results using radar and social media points, accuracies of 88.77% and 75% were obtained by setting up a threshold classification, demonstrating the effectiveness and usefulness of the method. The significance of this study lies in obtaining discrete social media flood points and achieving space-continuous flood inundation probability mapping, providing decision-making support for urban flood diagnosis and mitigation. Volunteered geographic information (VGI) plays an increasingly crucial role in flash floods. However, topic classification and spatiotemporal analysis are complicated by the various expressions and lengths of social media textual data. This paper conducted applicability analysis on bidirectional encoder representation from transformers (BERT) and four traditional methods, TextRank, term frequency–inverse document frequency (TF-IDF), maximal marginal relevance (MMR), and linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and the results show that for user type, BERT performs best on the Government Affairs Microblog, whereas LDA-BERT performs best on the We Media Microblog. As for text length, TF-IDF-BERT works better for texts with a length of <70 and length >140 words, and LDA-BERT performs best with a text length of 70–140 words. For the spatiotemporal evolution pattern, the study suggests that in a Henan rainstorm, the textual topics follow the general pattern of "situation-tips-rescue". Moreover, this paper detected the hotspot of "Metro Line 5" related to a Henan rainstorm and discovered that the topical focus of the Henan rainstorm spatially shifts from Zhengzhou, first to Xinxiang, and then to Hebi, showing a remarkable tendency from south to north, which was the same as the report issued by the authorities. We integrated multi-methods to improve the overall topic classification accuracy of Sina microblogs, facilitating the spatiotemporal analysis of flooding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores Hull's histories of living with water and flood in the period between the foundation of the town in the 1260s and c. 1700, examining how the inhabitants, Corporation and Commissioners of Sewers managed and governed water in order to survive and thrive in a risky yet resilient estuarine environment. It does that as part of a bigger project utilising 'learning histories' drawing on Hull's 800-year experience of living with water and flood to drive climate awareness and flood resilience in a city which has experienced major flooding in recent years and is increasingly vulnerable in the face of future climate change. Here, we use civic and other records to reconstruct a flood timeline for medieval and early modern Kingston-Upon-Hull, revealing a history of repeated flood events impacting the town and surrounding area in the centuries after its foundation in c. 1260. We explore who managed and governed water and flood risk, and how this was achieved, arguing that water management was a pervasive concern as well as a collective and shared responsibility which ultimately generated a 'living with water mentality'. Street view imagery databases such as Google Street View, Mapillary, and Karta View provide great spatial and temporal coverage for many cities globally. Those data, when coupled with appropriate computer vision algorithms, can provide an effective means to analyse aspects of the urban environment at scale. As an effort to enhance current practices in urban flood risk assessment, this project investigates a potential use of street view imagery data to identify building features that indicate buildings' vulnerability to flooding (e.g., basements and semi-basements). In particular, this paper discusses (1) building features indicating the presence of basement structures, (2) available imagery data sources capturing those features, and (3) computer vision algorithms capable of automatically detecting the features of interest. The paper also reviews existing methods for reconstructing geometry representations of the extracted features from images and potential approaches to account for data quality issues. Preliminary experiments were conducted, which confirmed the usability of the freely available Mapillary images for detecting basement railings as an example type of basement features, as well as geolocating the features. The UC Berkeley Random Walk Algorithm WaterMask from CYGNSS (Berkeley‐RWAWC) is a new data product designed to address the challenges of monitoring inundation in regions hindered by dense vegetation and cloud cover as is the case in most of the Tropics. The Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) constellation provides data with a higher temporal repeat frequency compared to single‐satellite systems, offering the potential for generating moderate spatial resolution inundation maps with improved temporal resolution while having the capability to penetrate clouds and vegetation. This paper details the development of a computer vision algorithm for inundation mapping over the entire CYGNSS domain (37.4°N–37.4°S). The sole reliance on CYGNSS data sets our method apart in the field, highlighting CYGNSS's indication of water existence. Berkeley‐RWAWC provides monthly, low‐latency inundation maps starting in August 2018 and across the CYGNSS latitude range, with a spatial resolution of 0.01° × 0.01°. Here we present our workflow and parameterization strategy, alongside a comparative analysis with established surface water data sets (SWAMPS, WAD2M) in four regions: the Amazon Basin, the Pantanal, the Sudd, and the Indo‐Gangetic Plain. The comparisons reveal Berkeley‐RWAWC's enhanced capability to detect seasonal variations, demonstrating its usefulness in studying tropical wetland hydrology. We also discuss potential sources of uncertainty and reasons for variations in inundation retrievals. Berkeley‐RWAWC represents a valuable addition to environmental science, offering new insights into tropical wetland dynamics. Our comparisons show that Berkeley‐RWAWC is better at showing how water changes with the seasons, which is useful for understanding tropical wetland water cycles. The nonlinear interactions between river discharge, astronomical tidal wave, and local geomorphology during storm passage or water release from upstream dams can produce severe floods in the Río Negro lower basin (Argentina). For this reason, this paper aims to detect and study nonlinear processes in this area. The watercourse hydrodynamics was described using hourly water level data from three limnigraphs during 2003 – 2021 and flow time series. The tide gauge dataset was employed to describe the influence of tidal cycles on the hydrological regimen. Nonlinear processes' impact on the astronomical tidal cycle and river discharge was analyzed using Harmonic Analysis, and Fourier higher-order spectra, also it was complemented with the selection of two study cases. Harmonic Analysis results showed that the tidal wave entry upstream of the Río Negro modulates its hydrological regime, presenting the water column semidiurnal variations. Also, high-order spectral analysis detected nonlinear interactions in the signal in storm conditions with an energetic redistribution among the linear tidal constituents toward shallow water harmonics. Additionally, nonlinear interactions provoked a delay in the tidal ebb phase with a consequential extension of flooding duration time. This paper analyzes flood impact on the historical objects and cultural heritage in Southern and Eastern Serbia. The basic research problem is the lack of systematized databases regarding the flood impact on the cultural heritage, in addition to the lack of official manuals or other types of educational material dealing with the management of the assets with monumental properties in flood situations. The goal of the paper is to indicate this problem to the professional and wider public through systematization and classification of the observed damages on the buildings. The paper first provides a brief overview of the development of flood protection throughout history with particular reference to the research area. In addition, the history of floods in Serbia is also analyzed in order to point to the frequency and scale of this problem in the researched area. Through the research of archival materials in the appropriate institutions as well as direct recording of assets in the field, the degree of flood impact on historical objects in the territories of Southern and Eastern Serbia is determined. It refers to both declared cultural monuments and those that are still undeclared but possess certain monumental properties. Only the material damages on the immovable cultural assets have been analyzed. The protection of the movable cultural assets has not been taken into consideration, although it represents a very important aspect of every flood damage. A classification of the damages observed on these types of buildings, which occur as a direct or indirect consequence of floods, has been carried out. Examples of structural damage are presented in the paper (such as fissures, cracks, bucklings and collapse of parts or overall objects). Examples of the damages that do not threaten the stability of buildings are also presented. Here, they are divided into two groups—moisture-induced damages and biodegradation. The paper also gives examples of the damages induced by direct or indirect impacts of floods. It is from these examples that general lessons can be drawn, namely those that would be applicable to the endangered categories of cultural heritage. The classification is conducted for the purpose of better planning of preventive or rehabilitation strategies and measures for the preservation of architectural cultural heritage. Timely and accurate information about the extent of floodwater is critical for emergency planning and disaster management efforts. Despite the advances in computational resources and in the field of remote sensing, there is a clear gap that restricts the disaster community from leveraging the technological resources in real time, which impedes on-ground response efforts. To bridge this gap, this paper makes two contributions. First, the paper presents a new web application, the Global Flood Mapper (GFM) that allows the user to generate flood maps quickly and without getting into technical intricacies. To derive the flood extent from Sentinel-1 satellite data, the pre-flood collection is considered as base and anomaly cells in the during-flood image(s) are identified using Z-Score values. Second, it advances an existing flood mapping method to (a) Map the peak of the floods by combining ascending and descending scenes when necessary, and (b) Check for false positives in hilly terrains by adding slope and elevation mask parameters. By comparing our results with Sentinel-2 MSI derived flood maps and field photographs, we show that the GFM can generate flood maps with precision. The GFM can be used to map and download the extent of multiple flood events of an area as vector data (.kml format), which can be a critical input for flood modeling and risk and impact assessments. The GFM shall enable first responders and practitioners across the globe to overcome technical barriers and lack of computational resources to map the extent of inundation during and after floods. Floods are serious threats to the safety of people's lives and property. This paper systematically introduces the basic theories and methods of flood risk assessment, takes Sichuan Province as the study area, and establishes a flood risk assessment index system with 14 indicators in four aspects—disaster-causing factors, disaster-forming environment, disaster-bearing body, and regional disaster resilience capacity—from the causes of disaster losses and flood formation mechanisms. Furthermore, this paper constructs a flood disaster risk assessment model for Sichuan Province based on a cloud model, entropy value, and GIS technology. The model is validated by taking the July–August 2023 flood disaster as an example, and the results show that the distribution of the disaster was consistent with the flood risk assessment results of this paper, which verifies that the selected indicators are appropriate and the model is accurate and valid. This paper explores collaborative spatial data as an alternative data source for hydrodynamic model calibration, specifically concerning flood risk mapping. This study is motivated by the multiple uncertainties in the modeling process, especially in the relevant calibration and validation stages. Furthermore, information shared collaboratively can play a fundamental role when data are scarce, which is a usual modeling limitation. This paper tackled aspects like developing a collaborative platform (a mobile app) to collect flood marks; identifying strategies to motivate and engage potential collaborators; developing tools to analyze data consistency; and assessing the capability and restrictions in collaborative information use. Results validate the hypothesis that collaborative spatial data can be an alternative in hydrodynamic model calibration. Developing mechanisms to assess data consistency was crucial for achieving a good performance in the results, as simulations using collaborative data presented errors (RMSE) below 10 cm. Finally, regarding public motivation and engagement, elementary school students performed the best in data collection, highlighting the importance of direct actions, such as face-to-face workshops. This paper investigates changes in political participation following a disaster. Drawing on the electoral results and flood declarations after the 2010 flood in Slovakia, a dataset was constructed that illustrates when and how often each municipality was affected by disastrous conditions before the elections. The analysis revealed that experiencing a flood significantly increased the level of political participation in a municipality. However, the effect of flooding on elections is conditional. First, significantly higher turnout occurs only when a flood affects the municipality on election day. Second, repeated flooding before the elections does not change the overall participation rate. In contrast, it is the one‐time, continuous extreme weather event that most mobilises voters. Third, only severely affected municipalities demonstrated a significant turnout effect. Lastly, the timing variable is crucial in determining the impact of repetition and severity. This paper distinguishes between different kinds of flood events that can influence disaster behaviour. Average monthly air temperatures in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) exhibit a notable rise during summer, ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 °C per decade, while precipitation experiences a significant decrease of up to 8 mm per decade. Climate models, across various RCP scenarios, project an increase in air temperature, that is most pronounced in the summer season. Additionally, there is a projected frequency and intensity of heavy precipitation during autumn. In BiH, agricultural production faces substantial risks, including droughts, spring and autumn frosts, hail, and floods. Recent years have witnessed extreme hydrological events, notably the 2012 drought and the 2014 floods. Strategic documents highlight the critical importance of addressing floods and droughts for agriculture, as well as their implications for the environment, households, and industry. To assess the severity of extreme hydrological events and their impact on agriculture, with a specific emphasis on autumn and summer in Bosnia and Herzegovina, average and peak values of the Standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) were calculated separately for the periods 1961-1990 and 1991-2020, focusing on October and August. Compared to the reference climatic period the current climate is characterized by shifts between intense wet and dry periods, with very few years exhibiting stable and expected weather conditions. Identified as extremely wet and flood-prone years, SPEI2 October values for 1974 (2.42), 1996 (2.13), 2001 (2.24), and 2014 (2.05) stand out, with only one extremely dry year in 1985 (-2.21). This paper aims to investigate flood risk in the Mashhad urban area and the role of flood channels in controlling floods. To achieve this goal, the AHP method was used in the ArcGIS software. The parameters included distance from the river, slope, density of canals, distance from canals, precipitation, vegetation, road and pathways, elevation classes, drainage density, distance from roads and land use. Then, by developing the required layers of the urban limits, the weight of each layer was determined based on its importance at the time of flooding. After the final weighting, the layers were compared (AHP) using Expert Choice software, and the resulting matrix was transferred to Idrisi software to determine the final coefficient for each layer. Finally, by applying these coefficients through the Weighted Overlay tab in ArcGIS software, the flood risk zoning map in Mashhad urban area was drawn. According to the results, out of the total area of Mashhad, 6.32 sqm have a very low flood risk, 23.82 sqm have a low risk, 260.06 sqm have a medium risk, 41.88 sqm have a high risk and 2.04 sqm have a very high risk. About 1% of the entire urban area has a very low risk, 7% has a low risk, about 77% of has a medium risk, 12% has a high risk and 3% has a very high risk. The results suggest that 0 to 3-degree slopes, which chiefly have urban application, provide suitable grounds for exploitation. Therefore, the areas particularly relevant to exploitation are those with proper conditions in terms of slope and vegetation. This paper uses a 30 m record of valley alluviation in the Lockyer Creek, a major tributary of the mid-Brisbane River in Southeast Queensland, to document the timing and nature of Quaternary fluvial response. A combination of radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating reveals a sequence of major cut and fill episodes. The earliest aggradation phase is represented by a basal gravel unit, dating to ~220 ka (marine isotope sub-stage 7d), and although little evidence supports higher fluvial discharges during MIS 5, a MIS 3 fluvial episode characterised by incision and aggradation dates to ~60 ka. A penultimate phase of incision to a depth of 30 m prior to ~14 ka saw the lower Lockyer occupy its current position within the valley floor. The Lockyer Creek shows evidence of only minor fluvial activity during MIS 2, suggesting a drier LGM climate. The appearance of alternating fine- and coarse-grained units at about 2 ka is notable and may represent higher-energy flood conditions associated with a strengthening of El Niño Southern Oscillation activity as observed in the flood of 2011. Floods destroy crop production; nevertheless, the extent of their impact on farmers' livelihoods in developing countries has been poorly investigated. This paper contributes to the growing evidence-based assessment of the impacts of shocks on communities. It assessed the post-disaster livelihood of farmers affected by the 2012 flooding in the semi-arid zone of Benin. To this end, a survey was conducted on 228 farmers in two municipalities of the flood-prone part of the semi-arid zone of Benin (Malanville, Karimama). Information on the well-being of households was collected using semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using income and consumption approaches focusing on poverty and on subjective assessment using happiness approach. Additionally, a probit model was used for a poverty assessment. The survey revealed that flooded farmers were amongst the poorest in the study system. Seven variables determined poverty in this study: household size, location, the percentage of the farm size that was flooded, fishing, the farmer's gender, farm size, and "holding a secondary activity". Regarding happiness, 99% of the flooded farmers were unhappier after the flood in 2012. The results clearly show that being subjected to floods increases the incidence of poverty. The capacity of flood risk management and governance should be strengthened in the study system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
