RuNPs stabilised by amino‐decorated imidazolium‐based polymer immobilized ionic liquids catalyse the dimethylamine borane mediated reduction of quinolines to 1,2‐dihydroquinoline (DHQ) and 1,2,3,4‐tetrahydroquinoline (THQ). Partial reduction of 3‐substituted quinolines to the corresponding 1,2‐dihydroquinoline was achieved with 100 % selectivity in toluene under mild conditions. This is the first report of the selective partial reduction of 3‐substituted quinolines to the corresponding 1,2‐dihydroquinolines with a heterogeneous nanoparticle‐based catalyst. A wide range of substituted quinolines have also been reduced to the corresponding 1,2,3,4‐tetrahydroquinoline with high selectivity and good yields by adjusting the reaction time. The 1,2‐dihydroquinolines readily release dihydrogen in toluene at 60 °C in the absence of catalyst with no evidence for disproportionation and as such are potential organo‐hydride reagents. The initial TOF of 610 mol quinoline converted mol Ru−1 h−1 for the reduction of quinoline is among the highest to be reported for a metal nanoparticle‐based catalyst and the conversion of 96 % obtained after 4 h at 65 °C is significantly higher than its platinum nanoparticle counterpart PtNP@NH2‐PEGPIILS as well as 5 wt/% Ru/C, which only reached 9 % and 11 % conversion, respectively, at the same time. Platinum nanoparticles stabilized by imidazolium‐based phosphine‐decorated Polymer Immobilized Ionic Liquids (PPh2‐PIIL) catalyze the hydrolytic evolution of hydrogen from sodium borohydride with remarkable efficiency, under mild conditions. The composition of the polymer influences efficiency with the catalyst based on a polyethylene glycol modified imidazolium monomer (PtNP@PPh2‐PEGPIILS) more active than its N‐alkylated counterpart (PtNP@PPh2‐N‐decylPIILS). The maximum initial TOF of 169 moleH2.molcat−1.min−1 obtained at 30 °C with a catalyst loading of 0.08 mol% is among the highest to be reported for the aqueous phase hydrolysis of sodium borohydride catalyzed by a PtNP‐based system. Kinetic studies revealed that the apparent activation energy (Ea) of 23.9 kJ mol−1 for the hydrolysis of NaBH4 catalyzed by PtNP@PPh2‐PEGPIILS is significantly lower than that of 35.6 kJ mol−1 for PtNP@PPh2‐N‐decylPIILS. Primary kinetic isotope effects kH/kD of 1.8 and 2.1 obtained with PtNP@PPh2‐PEGPIILS and PtNP@PPh2‐N‐decylPIILS, respectively, for the hydrolysis with D2O support a mechanism involving rate determining oxidative addition or σ‐bond metathesis of the O−H bond. Catalyst stability and reuse studies showed that PtNP@PPh2‐PEGPIILS retained 70 % of its activity across five runs; the gradual drop in conversion appears to be due to poisoning of the catalyst by the accumulated metaborate product as well as the increased viscosity of the reaction mixture. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) has led to an unprecedented global health crisis, resulting in a critical need for effective vaccines that generate protective antibodies. Protein subunit vaccines represent a promising approach but often lack the immunogenicity required for strong immune stimulation. To overcome this challenge, it is first demonstrated that advanced biomaterials can be leveraged to boost the effectiveness of SARS‐CoV‐2 protein subunit vaccines. Additionally, it is reported that oxygen is a powerful immunological co‐adjuvant and has an ability to further potentiate vaccine potency. In preclinical studies, mice immunized with an oxygen‐generating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) cryogel‐based vaccine (O2‐CryogelVAX) exhibit a robust Th1 and Th2 immune response, leading to a sustained production of highly effective neutralizing antibodies against the virus. Even with a single immunization, O2‐CryogelVAX achieves high antibody titers within 21 days, and both binding and neutralizing antibody levels are further increased after a second dose. Engineering a potent vaccine system that generates sufficient neutralizing antibodies after one dose is a preferred strategy amid vaccine shortage. While the ongoing COVID‐19 pandemic affirms an urgent global need for effective vaccines as second and third infection waves are spreading worldwide and generating new mutant virus strains, it has also revealed the importance of mitigating the transmission of SARS‐CoV‐2 through the introduction of restrictive social practices. Here, it is demonstrated that an architecturally‐ and chemically‐diverse family of nanostructured anionic polymers yield a rapid and continuous disinfecting alternative to inactivate coronaviruses and prevent their transmission from contact with contaminated surfaces. Operating on a dramatic pH‐drop mechanism along the polymer/pathogen interface, polymers of this archetype inactivate the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus, as well as a human coronavirus surrogate (HCoV‐229E), to the minimum detection limit within minutes. Application of these anionic polymers to frequently touched surfaces in medical, educational, and public‐transportation facilities, or personal protection equipment, can provide rapid and repetitive protection without detrimental health or environmental complications. Purpose: Ultrasound is the imaging method of choice in gynecology. The quality and diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound depends on the skills of the individual performing the scan. Evaluation of ultrasound practice has received limited attention.Methods: A video recording device was connected to an ultrasound machine in gynecology clinics in a teaching hospital. To minimize the observer effect, all staff were notified through email in advance. Data were collected over a 3-week period. Anonymous recordings of both patients and user were compared with current guidelines, and practice was categorized as: compliant, partially compliant, or non-compliant.Results: Observations (n = 43) were categorized and the results described as percentage frequencies (%). Image optimization was compliant in 23.3% of recorded observations, 11.6% was partially compliant, and 65.1% was noncompliant. The study also found that global examination on gynecology was 20.9% compliant, 18.6% partially compliant, and 60.47% noncompliant. Images were annotated in appropriately 41.9% of instances, and 25.6% of end-users examined bladder, vagina, and cervix when indicated.Conclusion: The pilot evaluation showed that ultrasound practice among end-users did not reflect current guidelines, suggesting a need for improvement. Purpose: A recent pilot audit found that the quality of transvaginal ultrasound practice in a teaching hospital did not reflect current guidelines. This was a concern given the frequency and importance of ultrasound examinations in approaching a diagnosis. Interventional measures involved ad hoc training sessions coincident with installation of updated equipment. A reaudit was performed to assess any changes in the standard of ultrasound practice.Methods: Data were collected by random direct observation. To minimize the Hawthorne effect, staffs were not made aware of when active data collection took place. Observations of both patients and end user were compared with current guidelines. Data collected maintained the anonymity of users throughout. Practice was graded as: compliant, partially-compliant, or noncompliant. Descriptive statistics were used to demonstrate any change post-intervention.Results: Observations (n = 48) of completed gynecology ultrasound practice were recorded, and results described as percentage frequencies (%). Image optimization noncompliant rates declined in the reaudit from 65.1% to 41.67% (P = .07) and noncompliant rates of global examination of gynecology decreased from 60.47% to 14.58% (P < .05). Substantial improvements were seen in terms of image annotations (initial audit, 41.9% vs reaudit, 66.67%), and end user examination of bladder, vagina and cervix when indicated (initial audit, 25.6% vs reaudit, 77.08%).Conclusion: Regular audit, ad hoc ultrasound training sessions and updated ultrasound equipment resulted in considerably improved compliance of transvaginal ultrasound practice in gynecology. This article provides a context to, attempts an explanation for, and proposes a response to the recent demonstration of rapid and severe decline of the native mammal fauna of Kakadu National Park. This decline is consistent with, but might be more accentuated than, declines reported elsewhere in northern Australia; however, such a comparison is constrained by the sparse information base across this region. Disconcertingly, the decline has similarities with the earlier phase of mammal extinctions that occurred elsewhere in Australia. We considered four proximate factors (individually or interactively) that might be driving the observed decline: habitat change, predation (by feral cats), poisoning (by invading cane toads), and novel disease. No single factor readily explains the current decline. The current rapid decline of mammals in Kakadu National Park and northern Australia suggests that the fate of biodiversity globally might be even bleaker than evident in recent reviews, and that the establishment of conservation reserves alone is insufficient to maintain biodiversity. This latter conclusion is not new; but the results reported here further stress the need to manage reserves far more intensively, purposefully, and effectively, and to audit regularly their biodiversity conservation performance. The population dynamics of varanids (large monitor lizards) is poorly understood. We report on the most detailed study to date of a population of one of Australia’s largest semi-aquatic varanids, Varanus mertensi. Survival of V. mertensi was derived from known-fate modelling of radio-tracked individuals over two and a half years. We demonstrate empirically what intuition suggests; that apparent survival probability in long-lived lizards is high over short sampling periods, with body size and gender influencing these estimates. Background: Anecdotally, it is suggested that patients with preeclampsia have a shorter induction to delivery interval than patients without preeclampsia, despite there being no good objective evidence.Methods: A retrospective analysis of 136 primiparous, singleton, cephalic, nonassisted vaginal deliveries between January 1997 and January 2000. Sixty-eight women had induction of labor for preeclampsia and 68 women without preeclampsia had induction of labor for other reasons. The two groups were already case-matched for maternal and gestational age. The following details were recorded from the case notes: maternal age, gestation at delivery, initial Bishop score, total dose of prostaglandin administered, induction to delivery interval, duration of second-stage labor, birthweight, and the percentage of Apgar scores < 7 at 5 min. Statistical analysis was carried out with a Mann-Whitney U-test, with the aid of SPSS version 9, Microsoft WindowsResults: The women with preeclampsia had a statistically significant longer induction to delivery interval than those without preeclampsia. The mean induction to delivery interval of women with and without preeclampsia was 1049.5 min and 762.5 min, respectively (p < 0.001)Conclusion: Women with preeclampsia had a longer induction to delivery interval than patients without preeclampsia. A high diversity of rock-dwelling macropod species inhabit the tropics of the Northern Territory, Australia. Within this region, individual species have varied distributions, with ranges variously being widespread, restricted, or geographically disjunct with variable levels of sympatry between them. The cause of these patterns is unknown and little is known of the ecology of these rock-dwelling macropods. We hypothesized that differences in the habitat requirements is the key to understanding the biogeography and sympatry of the species. We examined this hypothesis at both regional and local scales. We analysed records of occurence of Petrogale brachyotis, P. concinna, Macropus bernardus and M. robustus and environmental correlates (such as geology type, vegetation type, distance to drainage and distance to ‘rugged’ terrain) throughout the monsoon tropics using geographic information systems and generalized linear modelling. We surveyed 80 sites across the tropics of the Northern Territory and collected presence-absence data using scats and environmental correlates to examine fine-scale habitat requirements. From the regional scale analysis, it was clear that distance to rugged terrain strongly influences presence of all four species. Responses to this variable suggest M. bernardus and P. concinna have greater requirements for rugged terrain, whereas M. robustus and P. brachyotis are found across a broader range of habitats. The local scale analysis suggested presence of M. robustus is primarily driven by vegetation type, M. bernardus by the cover of outcrops, boulders and large rocks, and P. brachyotis by the density of caves. Although these species overlap in their use of habitats, there are also differences in their habitat requirements that are likely to play a role in their niche separation and in some cases their biogeography. However, it is apparent that the distributions of the species have also been influenced by historical factors given the absence of these species from some apparently suitable sites. Background: Rectovaginal endometriosis is a severe form of pelvic endometriosis in which pharmacological treatment is relatively ineffective (Vercellini et al., Fertil Steril. 2005;84:1375-87). Laparoscopic surgical treatment is effective, but has the potential risks of bowel perforation and colostomy formation (Darai et al., Am J Obstet Gynecol. 2005;192:394-400). Transrectal ultrasound scanning can be applied as a preoperative tool to predict the presence of rectovaginal endometriosis and bowel wall involvement (Abrao et al., J Am Assoc Gynecol Laparosc. 2004;11:50-4). Methods: Thirty-two women underwent transrectal ultrasound followed by therapeutic laparoscopy. Likelihood ratios and post-test prevalences were calculated with Fagan's normogram. This was then extrapolated with the aid of a mathematical model to a low-risk population. Results: A positive likelihood ratio was found to be 10.89 (95% confidence ratio (CI): 1.62-73.15) and a negative likelihood ratio was found to be 0.24 (95% CI: 0.1-0.57). The pre-test prevalence of rectovaginal endometriosis was 56%. The positive post-test prevalence probability was 93%, and the negative post-test prevalence probability was 23%. Conclusion: Preoperative transrectal ultrasound scanning for rectovaginal endometriosis is an extremely accurate predictive test, and strongly predicts the need for extensive laparoscopic dissection and potential bowel resection. Summary 1. More than half of all Australian bandicoot species (family Peramelidae) are listed by the IUCN as extinct or threatened and changed fire regimes in arid and semi-arid Australia have been identified as an important agent in their decline. The northern brown bandicoot is currently one of Australia's most common bandicoots, but their continued persistence in the tropical savannas cannot be taken for granted. Previous studies in Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory have shown this species to be prone to sudden declines in abundance, possibly linked to the occurrence of intense fires. 2. Here we examine the impact of four experimental fire management regimes (fire prevention, early dry season burning, late dry season burning and progressive burning several times through the dry season) on survival of the northern brown bandicoot. The analysis is based on capture–mark–recapture data obtained during a landscape-scale fire experiment conducted at Kapalga, in Kakadu National Park from 1989 to 1995. 3. All experimental fire treatments (including total fire exclusion) were associated with decline in survival rates over time, indicating that none of the tested approaches were appropriate for this species. Burning in the late dry season or progressively throughout the dry season produced substantially more severe declines in survival than did early dry season fires or fire exclusion. 4. Fire regime was found to be the most important determinant of bandicoot survival, far exceeding other factors such as gender, age, vegetation type, rainfall and season, all of which had comparatively little influence. The results demonstrate the importance of the frequency and seasonal timing of fires in determining the survival of bandicoots and suggest that spatially uniform and temporally invariant fire regimes are inappropriate for bandicoot conservation in the north Australian savannas. Abstract The impact of SO2 dry deposition from mining emissions on cricket abundance, diversity and composition was investigated at Mount Isa in the semiarid tropics of northern Australia. Seventy-one sites were sampled, stratified at two levels: sulphur deposition zones (high, medium, low, and background zones) and habitat (rocky ridge, rocky plain and alluvial plain). The three habitats did not support distinctly different cricket assemblages. Crickets responded to SO2 emissions, but impacts were largely restricted to the high-sulphur zone. Generalised linear modelling showed significant reductions in the probability of presence in the high-sulphur zone for the three genera Eurepella, Salmanites and Endacusta , and the subfamily Eneopterinae. In ordination space, the three high-sulphur zone by habitat combinations were clearly separated from all other combinations, and vector fitting of environmental variables showed soil SO4 to be a primary correlative factor of this separation. Summary 1.The indicator qualities of terrestrial invertebrates are widely recognized in the context of detecting ecological change associated with human land-use. However, the use of terrestrial invertebrates as bioindicators remains more a topic of scientific discourse than a part of land-management practice, largely because their inordinate numbers, taxonomic challenges and general unfamiliarity make invertebrates too intimidating for most land-management agencies. Terrestrial invertebrates will not be widely adopted as bioindicators in land management until simple and efficient protocols have been developed that meet the needs of land managers. 2.In Australia, ants are one group of terrestrial insects that has been commonly adopted as bioindicators in land management, and this study examined the reliability of a simplified ant assessment protocol designed to be within the capacity of a wide range of land managers. 3.Ants had previously been surveyed intensively as part of a comprehensive assessment of biodiversity responses to SO2 emissions from a large copper and lead smelter at Mt Isa in the Australian semi-arid tropics. This intensive ant survey yielded 174 species from 24 genera, and revealed seven key patterns of ant community structure and composition in relation to habitat and SO2 levels. 4.We tested the extent to which a greatly simplified ant assessment was able to reproduce these results. Our simplified assessment was based on ant ‘bycatch’ from bucket-sized (20-litre) pitfall traps used to sample vertebrates as part of the broader biodiversity survey. We also greatly simplified the sorting of ant morphospecies by considering only large (using a threshold of 4 mm) species, and we reduced sorting time by considering only the presence or absence of species at each site. Abstract The impact of dry deposition of SO2 emissions on ant abundance, diversity and composition was investigated at Mount Isa in the semiarid tropics of northern Australia. Forty plots were sampled, stratified at two levels: sulfur deposition zones (high, medium, low, and two control zones) and habitat (Ridge and Plain). The two habitats supported distinctly different ant communities. Ants had clear responses to SO2 emissions. Ant abundance was lowest in the high and medium sulfur zones in both habitats. Species richness in high SO2 plots (up to 5 km from the source) was approximately half that of control plots in Ridge habitat, and was substantially less than controls in the Plain habitat. Ant community composition in the high sulfur zone was clearly separated from those of other zones in ordinations. Vector fitting showed soil SO4 concentration as a primary correlative factor in this separation. Ant abundance and richness were both negatively correlated with soil SO4 concentration, and positively correlated with plant species richness and distance away from the smelters. The abundance of 10 of the 21 most common species showed significant responses to emissions. Five species showed positive responses, and all belong to species-groups known to be abundant at disturbed sites throughout northern Australia. Relative abundance and richness of Eyrean (arid adapted) taxa collectively responded positively to sulfur, and Torresian (tropical) and Widespread species responded negatively. Despite large changes in species composition and abundances, there was relatively little change in the abundance of functional groups that have been widely used in studies of Australian ant communities.
